For ALS Laboratories (UK ), a major testing company which ser ves the food and drink industr y in the UK , the last few years have been rather testing for them as well.
{ ALS Laboratories (UK ) }
There have been more challenges since then Covid, Brexit and the current cost of living crisis that has seen spiralling energy, fuel and materials costs But ALS has responded by rising to meet every challenge and putting the focus on their staff their clients and on improving their range of services
It’s been a truly transformative time for the company that has weathered the various storms at the same time as looking firmly to the future
to escape that In terms of our food business in the UK we took a hit in 2020 when Covid struck, so the financial year 2020/21 was a tough year but the last financial year that finished in 2022 was good We had recovered most of what we had lost in the previous year and from our perspective and the client’s perspective it s good to see many of the food sectors and industries bouncing back Since the start of this financial year in April we ’ ve seen that momentum continue and growth continue throughout the first quarter which is very encouraging
On New Year ’ s Day that year, a fire broke out at one of the company ’ s laboratories No staff were injured but there was widespread fire and smoke damage Work began immediately on transferring the company s testing work out to four other sites and on the long process of bringing the facility back on line
Nigel Richards, Sales and Marketing Director for ALS, says: “ The past few years have clearly been dominated by what’s going on in the wider world and it is difficult
Even before the Covid pandemic hit in early 2020, the company which offers a wide range of food, drink water and pharmaceutical testing across the UK began the year in devastating fashion
ALS investing in people and technology after testing times
“ That said, we are under no illusion about the scale of the challenges that lie ahead because clearly the post Covid, post Brexit challenges have been exacerbated by the acceleration of inflation and the continuing national issue with staff recruitment and staff retention
“ We are a major player in the service industry and we have seen staffing costs rise transport costs rise and fuel has gone up by a third In addition, what’s unique to our (testing) industry is that we use a lot of consumables laboratory supplies used in high

volumes and the price of these has gone up dramatically Unfortunately we have had no choice but to pass on some of those costs to our clients We applied a price increase in April but have endeavoured to keep these to an absolute minimum
Nigel says: We have a constant focus on continuous improvement Even if there is negative feedback we like to use that to put things right and do things better in the future because no business can afford to rest on its laurels
{ ALS Laboratories (UK ) }
What is heartening for ALS though is that despite these difficult times they continue to receive a high level of support from their clients The company carries out regular client surveys and the results are very positive indeed

ALS is also very hot on Environmental Social Governance and Nigel says the company is committed to initiatives that are environmentally friendly and will
They have also expanded facilities at their Trowbridge site increasing bench space and again providing new meeting rooms and staff facilities
Over the last year they received more than 300 responses and of those, two thirds agreed that ALS offers good value for money with only 3% disagreeing What s more, 84% of responders said they would recommend ALS to a friend and the overall rating for ALS’s service came out at 8 out of 10
Over the last couple of years they have continued to invest in their labs, notably at Shrewsbury where the pathogen lab footprint has been increased by 130% and the main microbiology lab expanded by a third There are new meeting rooms, offices and improved facilities for staff, giving them a much improved lab capacity and the ability to take on new business and cover a region including the West Midlands and South Wales
Nigel adds: We still have refrigerated collection vehicles (80) that have to travel across the country and we can’t do anything about that but we are constantly reviewing collection routes so they work as efficiently as possible We are increasingly aware of our place in the world and our local community ”
As well as looking after their staff and clients ALS has been making great technological strides They ’ ve improved and expanded their testing capabilities to be able to offer an in house testing method for chlorates and perchlorate in fact now they carry out around 95% of their testing in house, removing the need to subcontract to outside laboratories
Another award winning piece of technology is their client portal with 96% of all samples they receive for testing now registered by clients, making for a quicker and more efficient service
The company can now offer reports which are automatically generated for clients and a new visual report which shows exactly where there might be issues at a client’s facilities with a ‘ heat map ’ of possible areas of concern on an actual factory floor plan ALS has also made available a Knowledge Base of information about food hygiene which all clients can access
www.alsglobal.com/en/
Added to all that there s recently been a rebranding exercise and website redesign to help convey the message to clients old and new that ALS is one of the UK’s leading testing laboratories and one that is committed to its customers and its staff and to forging ahead with a constantly evolving technology base that is in tune with the goal of being a socially and environmentally conscious company

A big issue facing the food and drink industry is attracting and retaining staff, which is also a major concern for ALS There have been two pay reviews in the last year and every member of staff has a clear career progression plan There are social events, long service awards and a Good News Friday feature which is designed to counter the generally bad news coming in from across the world
To that end, ALS staff are encouraged to do their bit as well, and staff have raised huge amounts for various charities including Cancer UK and Ukrainian charities through cake sales, fun runs and other events
reduce the firm s carbon footprint One obvious initiative carried over from Covid is the prevalence of meetings on Microsoft Teams rather than in person, cutting down on the need for unnecessary travel
And it’s paid dividends At the Chatteris lab in Cambridgeshire 92 employees recently received long service awards demonstrating that ALS is working hard to make the company a great place to work and to stay Nigel says: “Despite the challenges with staffing, the vast majority of staff are finding they can develop a long and meaningful career with ALS indeed some people have been with us for more than 20 years ”
The company is also building ties with local schools and colleges and post Covid has been welcoming clients back on to their sites for workshops in
microbiology and pesticides In fact microbiology expert Keith Watkins was recently named Best Trainer of the Year at the 2021 Society of Food Hygiene and Technology awards
Other sectors that couriers highlighted as needing increased collaboration with included construction (21%); agriculture, forestry & fishing (18%); health/medical (16%); and hospitality events & foodservice (15%)

In the survey, 72% of couriers cited spiralling operating costs as being a major challenge Demand however, is not a problem: half of courier companies now deliver up to 50% more parcels than they did pre Covid
But businesses who use couriers can also help Greater communication and support between different sectors can help to alleviate the economic issues and external pressures that couriers and so many other businesses are experiencing

Another encouraging sign is that over one in eight couriers believe embracing technology can relieve everyday pressures
The study finds that 21% of couriers say their delivery service has felt increased demand from the food and drinks product industry over the last two years They subsequently call for increased collaboration to continue thriving and meeting customer needs
The food deliver y market is booming despite rising inflation and high fuel costs, according to a new report — and innovation is happening to meet the demand.

“ When all parties are on the same page, supply chain issues can be better managed If that happens, everyone wins and can benefit from the strong demand we ’ re continuing to see ”
“Everyone is impacted by supply chain issues, because the logistics industry is so closely linked to everyday operations in all kinds of sectors It’s vital that couriers and their customers keep lines of communication open and support each other as much as possible especially when external factors like inflation are so far beyond anybody ’ s control
Depot Manager Jon Stansfield said: “Like all transport operators working in London we face the reality of emissions based restrictions These are only going to get stricter, with similar regimes becoming more widespread throughout the country
Battery technology is still in its infancy and obviously an electric vehicle cannot compete with a diesel engined truck in terms of range, especially when fitted with a heavy fridge body ”
The world s first fully electric light duty truck to
says: The problem with online shopping is that it s been an explosion in demand, rather than sustainable development This has left the courier industry with some catching up to do, in terms of capacity It’s great that couriers are looking to tech for answers but there needs to be more collaboration with retailers and other sectors particularly in the short term
One example of how food delivery is shifting to accommodate economic and environmental challenges comes from Bidfood
The high profile company is keen to pave the way for future changes to its delivery operation by gaining early experience of electric vehicle operation
enter series production the 7 5 tonne eCanter represents a major advance in the battle to improve air quality in towns and cities
The foodservice wholesaler is preparing for the advent of battery powered truck technology with the help of its first zero emission FUSO eCanter
Examples are in service in a variety of applications across the UK but Bidfood s is the first to be fitted with a temperature controlled body This was built by Gray & Adams and is cooled by a Frigoblock eutectic refrigeration system which chills the insulated twin compartment box as the eCanter s main drive batteries are being recharged, rather than draining them of energy while the vehicle is on the road
Bidfood took delivery of the eCanter in 2020 but plans to put it to work were curtailed by the onset of Covid 19, subsequent lockdowns and then ‘fallout’ from the pandemic It has now been assigned to the company s depot in Battersea, from where it delivers to customers throughout central London typically covering 60 70km each day
