GOA CRACKS DOWN ON UNAUTHORIZED TELECOM INSTALLATIONS WITH RUPEES 12.6 CRORE FINE
Goa's Electricity Department has taken strict action against five telecom firms, imposing a hefty fine of 12.6 crore plus 18% GST for unauthorized installation of fiber optic cables on electricity poles. This decisive move, under the Goa Telecom Infrastructure Policy, 2 0 2 0 , a n d t h e Telecommunications (Right of Way) Rules, 2024, highlights the government's commitment to e n f o
regulations and preventing misuse of public assets.
The penalized firms—Green Fibre, Edgecom Telecommunication Pvt Ltd, Fastjet Telecom Pvt Ltd, and D i g i t a l N e t w o r k s Associates have each been fined 3 crore, while City Net faces a 60 lakh penalty Additionally, five more internet service providers and cable
operators have been issued show cause notices and are expected to face similar penalties. The firms have been given 15 days to respond, failing which further legal action may be taken.
Authorities stated that these telecom companies had applied for permission to use power poles but proceeded with installations despite their applications being rejected. The government has made it clear that there will be no provision to regularize such violations, setting a firm precedent for a d h e r e n c e t o t e l e c o m infrastructure policies. Meanwhile, the Electricity Department has launched a large-scale removal drive to clear unauthorized cables, with engineers at various levels instructed to enforce compliance. Any failure to act will result in a fine of 300 per day per official. Executive Engineer Kashinath
Shetye also confirmed that 206 additional show cause notices are in the pipeline, signaling an intensified crackdown. This enforcement initiative underscores the government's efforts to regulate telecom infrastructure and prevent unauthorized use of state-owned facilities. By holding violators accountable, Goa is reinforcing its stance on maintaining transparency, safety, and legal compliance in infrastructure development.
GOA GOES CASHLESS FOR TRAFFIC FINES: A NEW DIGITAL ERA
In a bold move to enhance t r a n s p a r e n c y a n d c u r b corruption, the Goa Police have announced that cash payments for traffic fines will be eliminated starting from the 2025-26 financial year This significant policy shift comes on the heels of a scandal at Bicholim police station, where a police constable was found to have allegedly misappropriated 17 30 lakh collected in cash fines between
February and December 2024. Under the new digital-only system, motorists caught violating traffic rules will be required to pay fines using debit/credit cards or through QR code transactions. In addition, offenders will have the option to settle pending fines online via the official portal at echallan parivahan gov in, using net banking, UPI, or cards. The revamped process also includes automated SMS alerts that will

send fine details directly to violators' registered mobile numbers, ensuring accountability and ease of tracking. The digital overhaul is expected to minimize manual errors and eliminate the loopholes that allowed previous cash-handling discrepancies “This policy change will restore public trust in our system and create a more structured, fair process for collecting fines,” stated a senior Goa Police officer. Not only will this digital approach simplify payments for motorists, but it will also improve revenue tracking and reduce opportunities for corruption within the department. While many citizens welcome the move towards a cashless, transparent system, concerns remain for those who are not wellversed with digital transactions, particularly older residents Authorities have assured that assistance will be available at designated Traffic Cells and
The unregulated rise of illegal bore wells in Goa is posing a serious threat to the state's groundwater reserves and longterm water security With the rapid expansion of luxury hotels, resorts, high-end restaurants, and gated societies, the demand for private water sources has surged,
fueling the booming water tanker business. However, this has also led to rampant unauthorized bore well drilling, depleting aquifers at an alarming rate.

JERRY PINTO
The Visionary Who Transformed Goa’s Event Industry
Over the past decade, Goa’s events and entertainment industry has witnessed remarkable growth. Post-COVID, this sector has expanded exponentially, driven by an ever-growing demand for corporate events, lavish destination weddings, and high-profile celebrations. There’s more than enough business, yet the appetite for grand experiences continues to rise. However, long before Goa became the thriving hub of luxury events that it is today, the industry was still in its formative years—marked by challenges, uncertainty, and the relentless hustle of those determined to carve a niche. Among those early pioneers who laid the foundation for today’s flourishing event landscape is Jerry Pinto, the visionary behind Buzz Events. From humble beginnings to becoming one of Goa’s premier event management companies, Pinto’s journey is one of passion, resilience, and innovation. This is how he transformed his dream into reality, shaping the industry along the way.
Jerry Pinto, a Goan at heart, hails from the picturesque village of Salvador do Mundo but spent most of his life in Goa’s capital, Panaji. He completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School, followed by higher studies at Dhempe College, where he earned a degree in Arts. However, his academic journey took a different turn when he pursued Engineering at the Government Polytechnic, completing a four-year diploma course.
According to Jerry, stepping out of college led him to Mumbai for engineering training. “I had completed my engineering studies and was a qualified Fabrication Technologist and Erection Engineer in the steel segment,” he shares. His training at Godrej-Boyce opened doors to a job opportunity in the quality control department, but fate had other plans. “I was offered a position of Manager quality control, but destiny had something else in store for me.
I had to return to Goa to take care of my father’s wine b u s i n e s s , ” h e recalls. Though unexpected, this twist would prove to be a defining m o m e n t i n h i s career.
Back in Goa, Jerry began assisting his mother in running the family’s winemaking business
“We specialized in m a n u f a c t u r i n g Portuguese Port W i n e a n d w e r e among the few c o m p a n i e s engaged in this craft in Goa,” he e x p l a i n s . T h e product catered to the Indian palate, which naturally l e a n s t o w a r d sweeter flavors.
“Indians have an innate love for sweet things, and our Port Wine was in demand We also p r o d u c e d R e d Wine, but while we were in the right business, we were in the wrong time.
The economics of demand, supply, and pricing didn’t align, making the business less profitable. That’s when I decided to explore a different path—one driven by my passion for art and creativity.”
During this time, an opportunity came knocking at All India Radio (AIR). While actively involved in theatre, Jerry was offered a position as an English announcer. “I became the first English announcer at AIR and was honored to launch FM Rainbow, Goa’s very first FM station,” he shares with pride This moment marked a milestone in Goa’s radio and entertainment industry, with Jerry’s voice becoming one of the most recognized in the state.
Jerry soon found himself drawn to English theatre in Goa “I discovered that I truly enjoyed stage performance,” he says. What started as a small role quickly grew into more significant parts. His love for acting deepened, and at the peak of his theatre career, he performed an incredible seven roles in a single
play. He delved into compering and soon was the most sought after Master of Ceremonies be it for Weddings or the Corporate sector. The stage gave him a sense of fulfillment and confidence, further shaping his creative journey.
While Jerry was thriving in the entertainment sector, he decided to hand over the family wine-making business to his brother. “The wine business was not my cup of tea, so I asked my brother to take over, which he accepted willingly,” Jerry recalls With his brother managing sales and marketing, Jerry continued to oversee manufacturing for a few years until his brother mastered the craft. Once he was confident that the business was in good hands, Jerry made the pivotal decision to step away and fully pursue his passion for art and entertainment.
This marked another significant turning point in Jerry’s life. “While I was performing on stage, the then General Manager of Taj Fort Aguada, Mr. Florence Ferrao, approached me with an offer,” he shares. The hotel was in the process of launching a leisure activities department, and they wanted Jerry to head it. For someone deeply involved in compering and stage performances, this opportunity felt like a blessing in disguise. “It was closely aligned with what I loved doing,” he says.
However, at the same time, Jerry had received a lucrative job offer from Dubai, making the decision a tough one. “I was reluctant to let go of the Dubai opportunity, but Taj stepped in and offered me a competitive package, matching the overseas offer,” he explains. Unable to resist the chance to work in a dynamic environment while staying in Goa, Jerry accepted the role.
His job at Taj Fort Aguada Resort in Sinquerim, Goa, involved enhancing the leisure experiences for guests. “At the time, Goa had a high influx of foreign tourists who were eager to explore the state through excursions and activities,” Jerry recalls. Despite having no formal education in the hospitality industry, he found that it came to him naturally. Initially hired on a six-month probation, his exceptional performance led to his permanent appointment within just three months.
Recognizing the potential for revenue growth through leisure activities, Jerry decided to expand the department into a major operation “We transformed it into a fullfledged leisure division, managing sports activities, excursions, the swimming pool, and the spa, creating a holistic guest experience,” he explains. His vision and strategic approach significantly elevated the guest engagement at the property, further cementing his place in the hospitality and entertainment industry. Soon, Jerry ventured into the Food & Beverage (F&B) and Banquet Events sector within the
hotel industry, a move that opened his eyes to the immense potential of events in hospitality. “There was a massive demand from tourists looking for exciting activities in the evenings, and the concept of uniquely themed dinners quickly gained popularity,” he recalls Recognizing this trend, Jerry introduced poolside theme dinners at the property, which became a huge success. “We began attracting chartered tourists from outside the hotel, who would come specifically to experience these themed events,” he shares At the time, he was responsible for managing both Fort Aguada Beach Resort and Taj Holiday Village, a role that soon earned him a promotion to Area Activity Manager.
Impressed by his performance, Taj Hotels honored Jerry with the title of ‘Test Lab Champion’. “Goa became the testing ground for new pilot projects, which were later
had to make a difficult decision—to step away from my role at Taj,” he says. This choice, however, would lead him toward an even greater turning point in his career.
The Birth of Buzz Events
Jerry left Taj Hotels in 2007, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his career. “I had gained extensive experience in event management, and it was the right time to start something of my own in this field. The o p p o r t u n i t y , i n f a c t , c a m e t o m e unexpectedly,” he shares.
During his time at Taj, Jerry had interacted with countless guests, one of whom—a visitor from the UK would unknowingly set the foundation for his entrepreneurial journey. “She was in Goa on holiday and was looking for a destination wedding venue for her son. She asked if I would be willing to plan the wedding for her,” Jerry recalls. However, the event was scheduled for April or May, by
implemented across 26 Taj properties. As part of this initiative, I frequently traveled to these hotels to train their teams,” he explains. With increasing responsibilities, his workload intensified. “I would leave home at 8 AM and return only around 2 AM the next day, but I was thoroughly enjoying my work,” he says. For Jerry, Taj became a school of learning, equipping him with invaluable knowledge about the hospitality industry. “Since I didn’t have a formal background in hospitality, I made the most of the multiple training programs available at Taj,” he recalls However, as his responsibilities grew, so did the expectations. The company offered him a higher position at their corporate office in Mumbai, a role that came with greater influence but required relocation.
Despite the prestige and career growth this opportunity offered, Jerry was hesitant. “I didn’t want to leave Goa, and ultimately, I
which time he was set to leave his role at the hotel. “I suggested introducing her to the person who would be taking over my position at Taj,” he explains.
When he mentioned that he was leaving to start his own venture, the guest insisted that he take up the wedding himself, believing it would be the perfect opportunity for his new business. “She went back to the UK and later sent me an email confirming her plans. She requested that I coordinate with the hotel for the accommodation requirements while I handled the entire event execution. That became my first project a destination wedding in Goa,” Jerry shares.
This event would go on to define a new era for Goa’s wedding industry. “It was one of the first large-scale destination weddings held at Taj Fort Aguada, and from there, there was no looking back,” he says. The success of this wedding led to a wave of new opportunities,
solidifying Jerry’s place as a pioneer in the destination wedding industry in Goa. “After that, I began receiving numerous offers, in weddings and corporate offsites, and that’s how my journey in the event industry truly began.”
Jerry credits a significant part of his success to his wife Cheryl Pinto, who stood by him and shouldered the financial burden when he left his high-paying job at Taj to start his own business. “At the time, we had also invested in a piece of land in Dona Paula, and the construction of our new house had just begun,” he shares It was a period of uncertainty, but with the encouragement of his friend Joseph Barretto, Jerry took the leap into entrepreneurship. “When this opportunity came my way, I decided to bite the bullet, and I haven’t regretted it since. Everything worked out well, and my wife was there for me, through thick and thin—the rest is history.”
Reflecting on his move into event production, Jerry explains that Goa’s event industry is a small and competitive space. “There are many vendors providing event production services, and when I rented equipment from them, they would also supply to other event companies, making it difficult to sustain,” he explains. This vendor-driven market meant pricing was often beyond his control.
While Jerry focused on providing a seamless guest experience and leveraging his hospitality background to differentiate himself in the industry, he soon realized that cost efficiency and quality control were critical to staying ahead. “People came to me because I offered a combination of exceptional event execution and top-notch hospitality However, as I navigated the competitive pricing landscape, I saw the need to invest in my own production equipment—products that no other company in Goa had.”
By carefully selecting unique props and event elements, Jerry carved out a niche for himself. His decision to enter the production side of event management wasn’t just about staying competitive; it was about unique concepts and ensuring quality without compromising on costs. “The goal was always to maintain high standards while giving clients a truly immersive experience. That’s what set us apart.”
Reflecting on the hurdles he faced, Jerry sheds light on the challenges that shaped his journey and how he overcame obstacles along the way. “When you enter into business, you face numerous challenges,” he shares. While his wife stood by him as a pillar of support, the stress was overwhelming. In the early days, Jerry operated as a one-man army, assisted by just two staff members, working tirelessly to establish his footing in
the industry.
One of the biggest challenges at the time was securing bank loans. “Unlike today, obtaining financing wasn’t easy Banks demanded substantial collateral and sureties, and interest rates were skyrocketing,” Jerry recalls. The financial burden was immense, but he remained determined to push forward. Despite the hurdles, Jerry ensured that every vendor was paid on time, even when resources were stretched thin. “We made it a priority to clear our vendor payments promptly, no matter how difficult it was,” he says. This commitment to financial integrity earned him a strong reputation in the industry—one that continues to define his company’s values to this day. Speaking about the story behind the name of his company, Buzz Events, Jerry recalls an interesting connection to his time at Taj Hotels. “While working at Taj, there was an internal newsletter for the employees. When they asked for name suggestions, I proposed ‘Taj Buzz’, and to my surprise, the management selected i t , ” h e s h a r e s A s a t o k e n o f appreciation, Jerry received a gift voucher from Taj, an acknowledgment he still cherishes.
Fast forward three years later, when Jerry was preparing to launch his own venture after seven years at Taj, he found himself searching for the perfect name. It was then that his first client suggested that he retain the word ‘Buzz’, inspired by the newsletter he had named at Taj. Wanting to ensure ethical use of the term, Jerry reached out to Taj Management and formally requested permission to use ‘Buzz’ for his company ’ s name. “They responded immediately and provided me with an NOC (No Objection Certificate), allowing me to use the name,” he says. And so, Buzz Events was born. Even the company’s logo carries the essence of the word ‘Buzz,’ symbolizing energy, movement, and excitement—the very foundation on which Jerry built his brand. The Next Generation
each year to embark on an adventure, traveling across the world with his close friend. Over the years, Jerry has explored more than 65 countries. One of his most remarkable journeys was a road trip across 16 countries in Western Europe, covering an astonishing 15,000 kilometers in just 57 days. “The following y e a r , w e e m b a r k e d o n a n o t h e r expedition—this time through Eastern Europe,” he recalls.
While his solo travels took him across the globe, Jerry also made sure to share these experiences with his family. “I couldn’t take them to all 65 countries, but I always planned a special trip to handpicked destinations that I had visited earlier,” he shares.
After years of relentless hard work and establishing Buzz Events as a leading name in the industry, Jerry decided it was time to pass the baton to his elder son, Jonathan, who now manages the company his father built Speaking about this transition, Jerry shares, “Now, I want to focus on pursuing my true passion—traveling the world.”
For Jerry, traveling has always been more than just a hobby; it is a lifelong goal and an integral part of his philosophy of "earn and burn." “I have followed this principle from the very beginning,” he says. Despite his demanding career, he always ensured he took a month off
Traveling, for him, is not just about exploration but about creating memories with loved ones. Speaking about his two sons, Jonathan and Craig, Jerry expresses immense pride, describing them as the two pillars of talent in his family. “I am truly blessed with two extremely talented children,” he shares.
His elder son, Jonathan, now oversees Buzz Events, carrying forward the legacy his father built. “Jonathan has an IMBA (International Master of Business Administration) and joined my business at the ground level. Through sheer hard work and determination, he climbed the ladder, proving his dedication to the company,” Jerry says.
His younger son, Craig, initially pursued a
career in the IT sector. A top-10 rank holder in his class, he moved to Mumbai and joined TCS (Tata Consultancy Services). Within just six months he made a major breakthrough. “He cracked the code for a client called Bloomberg, significantly reducing the time required for a complex task from several hours to just a couple of hours and received a citation for the same,” Jerry proudly shares. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to Goa, where Craig’s path took a surprising turn by entering the hospitality industry. He founded the restaurant ‘Carlito’s by the Sea’, in Verem Reis–Magos, which continues to thrive today. Not stopping there, he decided to expand his expertise and moved to France to pursue further studies in Business Management, specializing in AI and Logistics.
Now that his children are actively managing the business, Jerry finds himself with more free time to pursue his passions and give back to the community. “I have joined TTAG (Travel and Tourism Association of Goa) and am now part of their managing committee,” he shares. Through this role, he is actively contributing to the growth and support of the hospitality and tourism sector in Goa. While travel remains a major part of his life, he now often combines work with his journeys, making the most of both worlds.
Speaking about his future plans and his advice to new entrepreneurs, Jerry shares his vision for Buzz Events. “I have taken the company thus far, and now it’s Jonathan’s turn to take it to the next level,” he says. Looking ahead, Jerry has one more ambitious goal—to create a signature proprietary event for the state of Goa. “I can’t reveal much about it yet, as it’s still in its early stages,” he adds. For young entrepreneurs aspiring to enter the event management industry, Jerry has some important advice. “This industry demands immense dedication and sacrifice, both in personal and family life,” he warns The event industry is highly demanding, and success comes with its own set of challenges. However, his biggest concern is pricing integrity in the market. “I want to tell aspiring event managers—do not undercut prices just to compete. This drives down the industry standards and ultimately damages Goa’s and India’s reputation. Charge for the quality you provide, and don’t compromise on delivering a top-notch experience just to cut costs,” he emphasizes. Its important to celebrate Goa and India during our journey of growth and success.

Anshavi Badigar’s Journey to Miss Universe
By Rajesh Ghadge
Anshavi Badigar, fondly known as Anu Badigar, was born in Bangalore but found her true home in the serene landscapes of Goa, where her parents relocated in pursuit of better opportunities and an enhanced lifestyle. She completed her early education in Candolim and Verem, North Goa, before advancing to Dhempe College of Arts & Science in Panaji, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
From a young age, Anu displayed a passion for athletics, setting the foundation for what would become an extraordinary journey. Her dedication and perseverance ultimately led her to achieve the prestigious title of Miss Universe in bodybuilding—a testament to her relentless spirit and inspiring transformation.
Anu Badigar’s journey into athletics began unexpectedly in the 8th grade, a turning point she credits to her physical education teacher. “I wasn’t aware of my potential or capabilities in my early school days,” Anu recalls. “It was my PE teacher who noticed my talent and encouraged me to participate in sports.”
Her foray into competitive athletics started with remarkable success—winning a silver medal in the 5KM race and securing gold in the 10KM category at the Goa Marathon in 2012, a defining moment that solidified her passion for sports.
From then on, Anu was deeply involved in various athletic disciplines, excelling in javelin throw and high jump at the state
level throughout her schooling years. “I continued competing until my 12th grade,” she shares, adding that she also actively participated in sports like Tug of War, Throw Ball, and other track and field events. However, during her secondary school years, she chose to join the NCC, which shifted her focus away from athletics for a while.
It wasn’t until the lockdown that Anu rediscovered her competitive drive, a phase that became a turning point in her life. With ample time for self-reflection and personal g r o w t h , s h e e m b r a c e d a n e w challenge bodybuilding “That’s when I started working out in the gym and focusing on building my strength,” she says, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her journey. When asked what led her to transition from athletics to the gym, Anu Badigar explained that the COVID-19 lockdown played a pivotal role in reshaping her perspective on fitness. “During the pandemic, with limited access to sports activities, I realized the importance of staying fit. That’s when I turned to strength training in the gym,” she shares. What started as a way to maintain her fitness soon evolved into a passion for bodybuilding.
Having competed in high jump, throwball, and javelin throw, Anu understood the importance of building strength. “I needed to enhance my power and endurance, and I found that strength training in the gym was the best way
to achieve that,” she recalls Over time, she noticed s i g n i f i c a n t improvements in her physique, and as her body grew stronger, she began l i f t i n g h e a v i e r weights. Her progress didn’t g o unnoticed friends

It was during a National Beach Tug of War event that she crossed paths with Nikhil Chodankar, a seasoned powerlifting coach who recognized her raw potential after watching her training videos.
“He saw my lifts and was impressed by my strength,” Anu recalls. “He offered to coach me if I committed to powerlifting full-time, and I gladly accepted.” Under his mentorship, she began rigorous training, and within just a month, she participated in a state-level powerlifting competition In her very first attempt, she not only won the gold medal but also earned the prestigious title of Strongest Woman.
“That victory was a defining moment,” she says. “Since then, I have remained undefeated in the women's powerlifting category, defending my title and winning every competition I have participated in.”
While Anu’s journey in powerlifting was soaring, fate had yet another challenge in store for her—bodybuilding. Her transition into the sport was inspired by none other than Deepa Verma, a powerlifting champion and
mentor who would play a crucial role in shaping Anu’s next big leap.
“I met Deepa madam at a powerlifting event where she was officiating and guiding athletes,” Anu shares. “She was competing in the senior category, and we became friends. One day, she encouraged me to consider bodybuilding.”
At the time, Anu had no experience with the intricacies of bodybuilding—posing, diet, or stage presentation. But Deepa saw something in her. “She told me that if I was willing to take up the challenge, she would take care of the rest. She handled my posing practice, diet plans, and guided me every step of the way,” Anu recalls.
Under Deepa’s mentorship, Anu entered her first bodybuilding competitions in Goa, securing silver medals in three state-level events. Determined to push further, she then advanced to the national level, where she made her mark. But the ultimate achievement c a m e w h e n

“Before winning Miss Universe, I secured three s t a t e - l e v e l a n d o n e n a t i o n a l - l e v e l bodybuilding titles,” she shares, crediting her mentor for playing a pivotal role in her transformation.
Currently, Anu balances her passion for bodybuilding with her professional role as a gym trainer at ProFitness in Calangute. But even as she continues making strides in the fitness industry, she harbors a long-term aspiration—to serve in the Goa Police or the Indian Armed Forces.
“I am preparing to apply for police recruitment in Goa, and until that happens, my bodybuilding journey will continue,” she says. However, she remains open to alternative career paths. When asked what she would do if she didn’t make it into the force, Anu responds with unwavering determination: “If not the police, I will start my own gym to train aspiring fitness enthusiasts and bodybuilders, especially women.”
Her parents strongly support her dream of joining the police force, but Anu is keeping all doors open. “My parents want me to enter the police service, but I am exploring every opportunity that allows me to grow,” she says, embracing the possibilities that lie ahead.

Yet, he made the most of this period by working from home, creating portraits and paintings, and eventually setting up his own home studio—“The P2 Studio.” This creative space, named after his mother Prachi and sister Prabhavi, became a symbol of his dedication and perseverance.
His artistic exploration soon expanded beyond painting. In 2022, he ventured into craftwork, making Narkasur effigies and thermocol art cuttings. His understanding of proportions and scale, though not formally trained in architecture, set him apart. A defining moment came in 2023 when he participated in a miniature fort competition in Khorlim, submitting an exceptional model of the Reis Magos Fort. The judges were astonished that he wasn’t an architecture student, and his work secured second place in the competition. Inspired by this recognition, Prasanna went on
to create remarkable models, including a 7x4 ft replica of the Mangueshi Temple and a detailed model of the Bodgeshwar Temple, further showcasing his technical prowess and artistic versatility.
A Platform for Creative Expression
One of the most transformative experiences in Prasanna’s career was his participation in Artists Collective Goa, a prestigious initiative at Goa Brewing Co. in Sangolda. Here, he had the opportunity to work alongside other talented artists, culminating in an exhibition that provided invaluable exposure. He further cemented his presence in Goa’s art scene by setting up a stall at the Bodgeshwar Zatra in Mapusa, where his work was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. These experiences have fueled his ambition to continue exhibiting his art not just in Goa, but beyond.

In addition, he is preparing for upcoming art exhibitions and expanding his creative portfolio. His ultimate goal is to carve a niche for himself in the art world while staying rooted in his Goan heritage.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Artists
For those looking to pursue a career in art, Prasanna emphasizes hard work, dedication, and consistency. He believes that art is not just a profession but a lifelong passion that requires relentless effort. While financial stability might necessitate taking up different jobs, he urges young artists never to abandon their creative pursuits.
His own journey, from a young boy sketching in school competitions to becoming a Fine Arts teacher at two institutions, is a testament to the power of perseverance and belief in one’s abilities.
The Legacy of a True Goan Artist
Prasanna Dattaprasad Kakatkar’s story is a remarkable blend of talent, resilience, and artistic excellence. In a state known for its rich artistic traditions, he represents the new wave of Goan creatives who are shaping the future of art. Whether through his intricate models, breathtaking murals, or inspiring mentorship, he continues to leave an indelible mark on Goa’s art scene.

ANIMAL SUPERSTITIONS
Why Some Creatures Are Considered Good Luck (or Bad!)
By Gauri Ghadge
On a quiet evening in a Goan village, a woman sweeps the front porch of her ancestral home. As she finishes, a crow caws loudly from a nearby coconut tree. She p a u s e s , a s m a l l s m i l e forming guests are coming Elsewhere, an elderly fisherman eyes the sky nervously as his dog howls at the moon. He mutters a quick prayer and decides against setting out to sea that night. In Goa, animals aren’t just part of the landscape; they carry centuries-old meanings, symbols of fortune or foreboding, woven deeply into local beliefs. From crows and crocodiles to snakes and black ants, creatures that roam Goa’s villages, fields, and forests are often seen as messengers of luck—or omens of doom. But where do these beliefs come from? And do they still hold sway today?
Crows: The Messengers of Visitors
For many Goans, the cawing of a crow near their home is an unmistakable sign that someone is about to arrive. This belief is so deeply ingrained that even today, some people prepare for guests when they hear a crow’s call. The origins of this superstition likely be traced back to ancient Hindu and indigenous folklore Crows are associated with Pitru Paksha, a period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to honouring ancestors. Many believe crows carry the souls of the departed, acting as a bridge between the
living and the dead. Whether mystical or mere coincidence, one thing is certain—crows in Goa always seem to know when company is coming.
Black Ants: A Sign of Prosperity
Ever spotted a sudden trail of black ants invading your kitchen? Before reaching for insect spray, consider this many Goans believe their arrival signals incoming wealth, This belief is rooted in the idea that ants instinctively gather where there is abundance. Scientifically, it makes sense. Ants are drawn to food sources, often appearing just before monsoon season when humidity rises and food storage becomes crucial. But folklore adds a magical twist: the more ants, the greater the fortune on its way.
GOA’S
Dogs Howling: A Bad Omen?
Few sounds unsettle a Goan village at night more than the eerie howl of a dog Even today, many believe it’s a warning of impending death or bad luck. This superstition exists worldwide, but in Goa, it may have origins in Catholic and Hindu traditions In Hindu mythology, the god Yama the deity of d e a t h i s o f t e n accompanied by dogs. In Catholic traditions, b l a c
h a v e s o m e t i m e s b e e n associated with spirits or omens. Either way, an unexpected canine chorus at night is enough to make even the most sceptical Goan uneasy. Crocodiles: Sacred and Feared
While most people fear crocodiles, some Goan communities worship them. In the village of Veling, Ponda, an annual festival called Maange Thapnee celebrates the crocodile as a divine being. Locals offer prayers and seek blessings for a good harvest, believing that harming a crocodile brings misfortune.
This reverence stems from an ancient connection between Goa’s wetlands, agriculture, and crocodile habitats However, not all crocodile-related beliefs are positive. Fishermen in some parts of Goa view a crocodile sighting near their boats as a bad omen, often delaying their trips if they encounter one.
Horses: Keepers of Luck and Protection
While not commonly seen in Goa today, horses once played a vital role in the region’s history. Old Goan households and temples often kept horse figurines, believing they brought good luck and protected homes from evil spirits. Many also believed that horse tail hair had protective powers, leading to the tradition of crafting talismans or charms out of them. While this belief is fading, remnants of it can still be found in certain temples and rural homes.
Snakes: Divine or Dangerous?
The relationship between Goans and snakes is complex In Hindu tradition, snakes are considered sacred—worshipped during Nag Panchami, when people offer milk to cobras. Many believe harming a snake brings bad luck. However, in Christian and Catholic households, snakes are often feared, associated with the biblical symbol of the serpent from the story of Adam and Eve. It’s common to find crosses or religious symbols placed near gardens and wells to ward off these creatures.
Despite these fears, Goa’s forests and fields are home to many snake conservationists who work tirelessly to educate people about their importance in the ecosystem.
Do These Superstitions Still Matter Today?
As Goa modernizes, some of these beliefs are fading, while others remain deeply embedded in local culture. Urban families may dismiss these traditions, but in villages, they are still taken seriously. Even today, many elders won’t ignore the sound of a howling dog or the sudden arrival of a crow at their doorstep. While science may offer logical explanations for animal behaviour, superstitions add a layer of wonder and mystery to Goa’s relationship with nature. Whether you believe in them or not, one thing is certain—Goa’s animals have stories to tell, and the people of this land have been listening for centuries.
MAANGE THAPNE
Honouring the Guardian of the River
By Niharika Sachdeva
In the serene heart of Ponda Taluka, where the river whispers its timeless secrets, a sacred ritual unfolds each year a ritual of harmony, where man and nature come together in reverence. This is Maange Thapne, a celebration of the eternal bond between the villagers of Durbhat, Talaulim, Adulshem, and Tamshirem and the crocodile, locally called "Mange." Celebrated on the last day of the Paush month, beneath the new moon of Amvashya, it is a p r o f o u n d h o m a g e t o t h e protector of the land the crocodile, revered as a guardian of the community.
For centuries, the villagers have honored this majestic creature, not simply as a river dweller, but as a spirit a silent guardian who watches over the earth and its people. With each passing year, they gather to express their gratitude, seek blessings for the harvest, and acknowledge the unseen forces that protect their homes and fields.
S h a p i n g t h e G u a r d i a n :
Crafting the Crocodile
On the riverbank, the earth is gently gathered, soft and yielding, shaped with reverence into the form of a crocodile The mud embraces the shape, while shimmering shells and pointed thorns are placed to mimic its scales and teeth. With each press of the hands, a silent prayer is
whispered into the earth, and an egg or chicken is laid at its feet—a humble offering to the spirit of the river. It is more than a sculpture; it is a living symbol, a reminder that the crocodile, the Rakhandar, guards not just the river but the heart of the village itself.
A Prayer to the Waters: The Sacred Ceremony
As the figure stands proud, a small pooja unfolds, honoring the sacred water deity—the source of all life and sustenance. The air becomes sweet with the scent of puffed rice and jaggery, offered as prasad to all present, a
GOA’S
shared blessing that binds the villagers in a spirit of unity and gratitude. The ceremony hums with the rhythm of devotion, as prayers rise like gentle ripples on the water, seeking the divine favor of the land, its crops, and the well-being of all.
But the spirit of Maange Thapne is not simply found in the offerings A roll call echoes through the crowd, for no one is to be left behind. Those who are absent are remembered, and a knot is tied in their name—a playful yet meaningful reminder of the togetherness this sacred ritual demands. A
fine awaits them—a small price to pay for missing the pulse of the community, ensuring the ritual’s unity remains unbroken, year after year.
The Protector’s Legacy: The Legend of the Crocodile
T h e c r o c o d i l e ’ s r o l e a s t h e community's protector is not mere legend; it is woven into the very fabric of the village's history. Long ago, when a sluice gate broke and saltwater threatened to ruin the crops, a crocodile sat patiently at the breach, guarding the fields and preventing the waters from flooding. Since that moment, the crocodile has been seen not only as a guardian of the land but as a symbol of unwavering strength and protection. A Timeless Connection: More Than a Ritual
Maange Thapne is not just a ritual—it is a celebration of nature, tradition, and the unseen protectors of the land. It is a time when the villagers come together to honor the spirits of t h e e a r t h a n d t h e r i v e r , acknowledging the sacred balance that sustains them.
Through this beautiful and ancient tradition, they give thanks to the land, to the c r o c o d i l e , a n d t o t h e d e e p interconnectedness of all living things. The crocodile, in its quiet strength, becomes more than a mere river creature. It is a symbol of protection, a living testament to the sacred bond between the villagers and the land beneath their feet. Through Maange Thapne, the villagers celebrate this ancient and sacred connection, knowing their protector the crocodile—watches over them, as it has for generations.
THE UNWRITTEN RULES
What Every Outsider Should Know about Goan Villages
By Gauri Ghadge
Goa, known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and hospitality, hides a quieter, more reserved side in its sprawling villages. While tourists flock to the coastal resorts and bustling towns, the rural heart of Goa beats to its rhythm. Here, away from the tourist hotspots, there exists a set of unwritten rules—subtle customs and traditions that guide daily life in a Goan village These rules are followed by the locals without much thought, but to an outsider, they can seem mysterious, and even essential to understand if one wishes to blend in seamlessly.
In this article, we explore the unsung codes of village life in Goa rules that shape the fabric of rural communities, often unnoticed by outsiders. Whether it’s the appropriate w a y t o g r e e t e l d e r s , respecting sacred spaces, or u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e peculiarities of village etiquette, these rules reflect the deep connection between Goans and their land, culture, and community.
Greeting Elders: The Subtle Art of Respect
In Goan villages, respect for elders is not just a cultural value but a way of life. If you find yourself walking through a
village and cross paths with an elderly person, there is a certain unwritten rule that guides how you should behave. Unlike urban areas, where a simple hello suffices, in the villages, the greeting is often accompanied by an act of deference.
It’s common for the younger person to make way for the elder and bow their head slightly. In some regions, you may also notice a gentle Dev borem korum(which means “God bless you" in Konkani) or simply a respectful nod. The importance of greeting elders with genuine respect reflects Goa’s deeply ingrained culture of family ties and the importance of community.
The Sacredness of Certain Spaces:
Walking at Night
In some villages, some paths or roads are best avoided after sundown. These areas are often linked to local folklore, historical beliefs, or simply unwritten codes passed down through generations. For instance, certain temple areas or sacred groves are considered off-limits at night, as they are believed to be inhabited by spirits or deities.
Locals are aware of these areas and typically avoid them after dark, not out of superstition alone, but due to a sense of reverence for their cultural heritage. Outsiders may not realize that walking down these paths at night can be perceived as disrespectful or intrusive. One notable example is the sacred groves found in many Goan villages. These spots are often protected by local communities as they are believed to house ancestral spirits. It is considered improper to walk through these areas late at night as it disrupts the peace and sanctity of the space.
Parking Your Scooter: A Matter of Etiquette
While Goa is well-known for its vibrant tourism scene, scooters are the preferred mode of transport for most locals. As an outsider, you might not realize the unwritten rules about where and how to park your scooter in a village. It’s common in rural areas for parking spaces to be designated by the locals—often near churches, markets, or homes. Villagers might even use tall trees, walls, or poles as informal markers to
indicate where parking is allowed If you’re a visitor, it’s considered impolite to park your scooter too close to homes or private properties, as it might obstruct daily activities or the movement of the family.
It’s always best to ask a local before parking in an unfamiliar area. Locals will often point you toward a proper parking space, and by following this unspoken rule, you show respect for the local order and their sense of propriety.
The Silent Rule of Not Disturbing Afternoon Siestas
The afternoon siesta, particularly in the summer months, is a cherished part of daily life in Goan villages. This midafternoon rest is taken seriously—many locals retreat into their homes between 1 PM and 3 PM to recharge and escape the midday heat During this time, it is considered impolite to engage in loud a c t i v i t i e s o r t o v i s i t s o m e o n e unannounced.
In many villages, the streets become quieter as people nap or rest in the shade. Outsiders unfamiliar with this practice may inadvertently disrupt the peace by speaking loudly or even knocking on doors during these hours. A polite knock should be followed by a soft greeting, and it’s always advisable to avoid making any noise that could disturb someone’s rest. This rule reflects the importance of rest and rejuvenation, especially in a tropical climate where the afternoons are particularly oppressive.
The Unspoken Dress Code: Modesty is Key
When visiting a Goan village, it’s essential to understand the unwritten dress code, especially when attending religious events or entering temples Goa’s villages, particularly the more rural areas, have a deep sense of tradition, and the way you dress reflects your respect for local customs.
While beachwear may be appropriate on the sands, it’s advisable to dress modestly when exploring villages For women, modest attire, like long skirts or dresses that cover the shoulders, is preferred. For men, wearing shirts with sleeves and long trousers when visiting sacred sites is seen as respectful. Additionally, footwear should always be
removed before entering religious spaces like temples or homes, a practice rooted in reverence for the sacredness of the place.
How to Handle the Native Dogs: A Quiet Understanding
In Goan villages, dogs are common residents, often living freely and forming part of the community. These dogs are not pets in the Western sense they are guardians of villages, homes, and properties. Goan dogs are known for their independence and can be found wandering around, often barking or stopping to investigate newcomers.
It’s important to understand that these dogs should never be disturbed or approached without the permission of the o w n e r W h i l e t h e y m a y s e e m approachable, they are not always friendly to outsiders. In many villages, dogs are trusted guardians and it is considered disrespectful to engage with them too casually, as it may disrupt the harmony of the village.
Conclusion: Why These Rules Matter
The unwritten rules of Goan villages reflect more than just practical concerns—they are deeply woven into the fabric of Goa’s cultural identity. These customs help preserve the integrity of the community, ensuring that daily life continues in harmony with the land, the people, and the spiritual forces that guide t h e v i l l a g e F o r t h e o u t s i d e r , understanding these subtle codes is more than just a matter of etiquette—it’s an opportunity to connect with Goa on a deeper level, to respect and become a part of the community in a way that’s appreciated by its people.

You bend over to tie your shoe or pick up your four-year-old. There goes your back. Sometimes it's just a twinge. Other times the pain is so acute that you need to lie down immediately Everything you do affects and is affected by your back -- the way you sit in your office chair, how you drive, how you eat, how you sleep. Any extra weight you may be carrying also puts a strain on your back. Back pain may be constant and dull, located in just one area or striking and acute, spreading from the back down into

BUDGET
2025: WHAT DOES IT SAY?
F i n a n c e M i n i s t e r N i r m a l a
If your income crosses the above thresholds, then the rebate goes away. But the slabs have also been generously changed, so even those earning above Rs 12 lacs, will still have some tax savings. It is estimated that a taxpayer can save anywhere between Rs 30000 minimum, to a maximum of Rs 1.1 lac, depending on their income level, thanks to the new slab rates brought in, in Budget 2025.

Besides this he holds various positions in bodies such as ICAI, GCCI, College bodies, Rotary etc.
Sitharaman's 8th budget in a row, has shown that the Government has taken a decisive turn away from the tried and tested formula adopted by her in the past few budgets. The earlier budgets by her were always heavy on public sector spending on capex and infra such as roads and railways: From Rs 3 lakh crore in 2017 to Rs 11 lac crore in 2024. The concept was very clear: India's growth story will be fuelled primarily by Government spending
In the year 2019-20, the Finance Minister revved up the 2nd engine of growth: Private capital expenditure into production facilities, trying to make India a manufacturing hub (in line with Make in India), and thus to spur j o b c r e a t i o n a n d o v e r a l l economic growth.
In the current budget of 2025, public sector capital expenditure has stayed almost flat. There are no corporate incentives as well. Instead, the finance minister has now revved up the third engine for growth: domestic consumption. This has been achieved by the single biggest bonanza given to individual taxpayers: No tax on i n c o m e u p t o R s 1 2 l a c s (conditions apply). This increase of tax-free slab from Rs 7 lac to Rs 12 lac is expected to cost the
to file the Income Tax returns). Further, this rebate doesn't apply to incomes taxable at specific rates like capital gains etc, so tax will still be payable on these incomes.

Government Rs 1 lakh crore, but the finance minister is betting on the Indian domestic consumer to use this extra disposable income in hand, to buy goods and services, being supplied by all the industries which have sprung up (partly due to the private capex spurt after 2019-20).
Thus, we are seeing a clear shift from a capex spending-based growth budget to a consumption based growth budget, and this is the signal for all the three engines to fire simultaneously to propel India to being Viksit Bharat
And this couldn't have come any later: with Trump playing tariff wars with countries left-right and centre, its imperative that the Indian economy tries to be as self-reliant as possible, till global economic markets stabilise.
Coming to the mega income tax exemption: This is finally a big relief to the ailing “middle class” of India who have always been feeling short-changed bye very budget, which normally focuses on alleviating the poor or incentivising corporates to set up shop in India.
The exemption though comes with riders: If your income is upto Rs 12 lacs (Rs 12.75 lac if you are a salaried employee), then there is no income tax vide a rebate (i.e. to claim the rebate you still need
Another departure from usual budgets is that, this budget has a sequel: The new Income Tax bill is t o b e i n t r o d u c e d i n t h e parliament anytime this week. Normally this would be done on the day of the budget itself but it has been pushed around a week after the budget This bill is expected to be half the size of the current Income Tax Act, with much simpler provisions This bill will truly be a gamechanger and one would have to wait and watch how everyone may be affected by it.
All in all, the finance minister has managed to deliver a very balanced budget, with low fiscal deficit, no abnormal freebies, with a much-awaited relief to middle class, with an eye on economic growth.

RELOCATION HOME VS HOLIDAY HOME– ONE SIZE FITS ALL?
o f k e e p i n g multiple spaces that can be used as per the buyer's n e e d s . F o r example, a spare room can be used as a holiday home buyer's study or a relocation home

When you're building a stand alone home, you have the option of keeping multiple spaces that can be used as per the buyer's needs. For example, a spare room can be used as a holiday home buyer's study or a relocation home buyer's sta room. A kitchen can come with the option of a separation from the dining space or an open plan.
Till 2020, Goa's real estate market was dominated by holiday home buyers However, covid brought about a change in mentality. Fast forward to 2025 and we've seen a surge in buyers looking to relocate to Goa, either on a full time or partial basis.
In short, self use took priority over holiday rentals and people started to look for a different kind of home than what the market was flooded with.
So what do self use buyers look for that's different from holiday home buyers? It's usually the little things.
A decent staff room, bigger garden, more privacy, more open
spaces and similar things that matter to full time occupants. Another big difference is that relocation home buyers usually prefer homes in locations where holiday rentals are not prevalent so as to avoid unnecessary noise and commotion.
So as a developer, this presents some challenges. Can you still build a home that suits both holiday home buyers as well as relocation home buyers? In short, it is possible in a stand alone home but it is very difficult in a gated community. Here's why.
When you ' re building a stand alone home, you have the option

Simultaneously, add flexibility to your floor plans and site plans so that you can cater to both sides to the extent possible. But you wont be able to please everyone.
As the Goa story continues to evolve, we see select developers evolving with it which is key to the continued growth of the sector. To those who continue to focus entirely on holiday home buyers, please remember, one size rarely fits all, especially when fashion is evolving.

COUGH, SNIFFLE, REPEAT: MANAGING THE CYCLE OF YOUR CHILD
AND COLDS
Children are particularly vulnerable to infections. Frequent exposure to new viruses at daycare or school can lead to multiple bouts of common cold. Certain viruses, like rhinoviruses or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), peak during certain seasons, especially fall and winter. Children’s immune defenses are still learning to fight o these invaders, and while this is part of the natural process, it can mean recurring illnesses.

Four-year old Akriti is down with cough, cold and fever for the third time in two months. She was a healthy toddler, but ever since she started school she has been falling sick often. Her parents are exhausted after a series of sleepless nights, and concerned… Rings a bell?

Children’s immune defenses are still learning to fight off these invaders, and while this is part of the natural process, it can mean recurring illnesses.
A sick child should be given plenty of warm drinks like soups, milk and warm water. Oral hydration helps to keep the mucus liquified facilitating easy removal Adequate rest and sleep help in early recovery. Parents should not blindly resort to over-the-counter cough syrups, as many of these may have serious side-effects and are not approved for use in young children.
Honey has long been used as a natural remedy for coughs and c o l d s , o w i n g t o i t s a n t iinflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It forms a protective coating in the throat, reduces irritation and calms persistent coughing Studies have shown that honey may be as effective as o v e r - t h e - c o u n t e r c o u g h medicines, and much safer. It can be consumed with warm water or herbal teas, or combined with ingredients like ginger or lemon for added benefits However, honey should not be given to children below one year due to the risk of botulism.
Prevention is better than cure, goes the age-old saying A healthy balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, adequate sleep and active outdoor play are crucial. Frequent hand-washing is a simple yet powerful step in preventing infections. Sometimes, what may seem like a recurrent cold could actually be nasal allergy, triggered by dust, pollen, pet dander, or mould in the home environment Less commonly, conditions like asthma or gastro-esophageal reflux can cause recurring coughs. If your child is experiencing
difficult or fast breathing, high fever, or is excessively fatigued, it’s time to consult a pediatrician. Likewise, if the cough persists for more than 7-10 days, or is accompanied by excessive mucus, wheezing, chest pain, or breathlessness, it is advisable to visit a pediatric pulmonologist for detailed evaluation.
Recurrent coughs and colds are a common part of childhood. By taking proactive steps, parents can ensure that these illnesses do not affect the family’s quality of life and the children can lead a lifestyle full of vitality and vigour.
