Deutches Eck The name Deutsches Eck translates literally as ‘German Corner’ but the meaning is more of a cosy space rather than it’s physical location on the corner of Rembrandt Apartments on Sukhumvit Soi 20. FEATURED RESTAURANT Deutches Eck Host Frank Boer had been living and working in Thailand for the past 25 years and is an integral part of Bangkok’s German dining scene have catered numerous functions for the German Embassy and leading Germany companies.

“This is an oasis in a chaotic city,” says Frank , “we have no loud music, no hawkers and no ladies of the night in search of business. German food is very tasty and has virtual global appeal, likewise our both Asians and Westerners like to drink German beer.”

One of their signature dishes is Crispy Pork knuckle served with sauerkraut and farmers potato which is a typical southern German dish that is now available throughout the country. Frank explained the easy way to get a crisp skin would be to deep fry, but the meat would loose it’s taste.

This is why here the technique Is slow grilling on the rotisserie at the front of the restaurant for two to two and half hours. The result is a brittle crisp skin with succulent ham like moist meet underneath. He says that before grilling the meat is injected with herbs and salt and this style cant be found anywhere else in Bangkok and was at pains to point out the crisp skin was not the result of deep frying. It was served with sliced potatoes fried with diced ham and onion and a mushroom gravy.

Then came Lamb shank in red wine sauce on a bed of mashed potato with green beans in gravy.

While there is some lamb being produced in Thailand he will only use meat imported from Australia for the taste he is looking for and meat that is almost falling off the bone.
