FEATURED RESTAURANT PEKING Due to the large geographical mass of China the country has a total of eight uniquely different cuisine styles, reflecting what is most abundant in each of these regions. Here in Bangkok we have a wealth of Chinese restaurants, but the majority of

them serve Cantonese cuisine from the South of China. When Mrs Song Shu Ping moved from Beijing to Bangkok in 1997 there were no restaurants serving Peking style Chinese cu i s i n e . T h i s w a s n o t o n l y a bus i ne s s opportunity, but also a chance for her family to go out and eat their native cuisine once again. She opened the first branch of Peking on R a m a IV R o a d , t h e s e c o n d o n e o n Silom Road, and now she has a total of 11 Peking restaurants in different locations around Bangkok. This branch, which is now regarded as their flagship restaurant, opened seven years ago on the left hand side of Richmond Building in Sukhumvit Soi 26. It’s a two storied delightful Chinese sanctuary. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 >>

FEATURED RESTAURANT peking The main dining room has both rectangular rosewood coloured tables for 4 people or larger circular tables for 6-8 which is Ideal for a family party, with a rotating glass “lazy Susan” in the middle to share the dishes around the table. There are three private dining rooms on the ground floor and another four on the first floor gallery. The decor is the essential red and gold Chinese contrasted by contemporary lighting in the ceiling. The restaurant may have an unpretentious welcoming look but the endorsement of the quality and authenticity of the taste is that this is where diplomats from The Embassy of China choose to entertain their VIP guests from overseas. All the Chefs come from Beijing and have a minimum of 10 years Peking culinary experience to ensure authenticity of the taste, of their food, no there is MSG in any of their dishes. To keep their prices competitive, luckily, the majority of the ingredients used in the kitchen are locally sourced with the exception of two ingredients that can only be found in China and are unquestionable must haves for the true taste. These are Shanxi mature vinegar and Szechuan chili sauce. Shanxi mature vinegar the most well-known vinegar, from the north of China, is made by fermenting high quality sorghum and has a dark purplish colour. It is clear with a full bodied odour, tastes mild and mellow and leaves no pucker in the mouth. The longer it’s stored the more fragrant it becomes. Szechuan chili sauce is made from a yellow bean base, infused with chill. Hot pepper helps to reduce internal dampness, so it’s frequently used in Sichuan cuisine. Lamb is hard to find in Bangkok, so it is imported from both China and New Zealand. The service staff are more comfortable with speaking in Thai or Chinese, although they do understand English, when it is spoken clearly

One dish we recommend you to try is their Stir Fried Sweet and Sour Pork [order code 129-33], a generous sliced piece of pork served in a rich caramelised sauce with a light tangy taste, comfortable easy eating either on its own or with boiled rice. Peking style sweet and sour has a more intense red colour than sauces from other regions. Another dish you should try is their Deep Fried Seafood Salad Rolls [order code 129-74], which has a light crisp coating and the filling is shrimp, octopus and mussels mixed with a subtly light salad sauce. A dish I have never tasted before, but look forward to tasting again many times in the future. In addition to Peking style cuisine they also serve Szechuan style dishes for those customers who are looking for more fire in the taste of their food. If this is what you are looking for, try their Fried Prawn Skewers With Chili Paste [order code 129-97]. The seafood still in the shell, threaded individually onto the skewer like a small satay (an Asian snack with the ingredients cooked on a stick). Very tasty but a word of warning there is a kiss of fire in the chili paste, proceed with caution. This dish is made with the Szechuan chili sauce we mentioned earlier. Traditionally, chopsticks are used with Chinese cuisine except for the soup. Once you have mastered the art, it’s a fun way to eat. But don’t worry if it doesn’t work for you, western cutlery is available here.

If your taste buds are passionately Pekinoise, this is the place to dine!

Being tucked down a quiet sub Soi of Sukhumvit 33, Bistro 33 has evolved its own rules due to its location. A la carte dinning is a little slow, the bulk of its business comes from events and parties ranging from birthdays to wedding and funerals. They do have the usual a la carte menu but they are able and more than willing to customise it to suit individual needs and budgets. While never intended, Bistro 33 has become the unofficial Country Club for Sukhumvit’s expatriate community. It’s popular with a selection of women’s groups for a variety of functions both daytime and in the evening and also with families for Sunday brunch due to kids-friendly facilities. Having recently extended the building, adding a conference centre, they have several Rotarians groups having their monthly board meeting here, after which they go down to the restaurant for a dinner and a few drinks. “The majority of our customers are expats,” says Khun Regan, “they are in the 40 plus age group, who have been living in Bangkok for several years. We aren’t getting so many new arrivals. We organise a lot of themed parties, such as last year for William and Kate’s Royal Wedding in London. This year we will be having a themed party for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee in June and for the opening of Olympics 2012. That Sunday we are going to have a special Olympics themed party for the kids.” Nostalgia cuisine sells well, they sell a lot of Chicken Kiev, a comfort dish from the 70’s, that reminds customers who grew up in the UK of their childhood. They often host pizza parties which are very popular with the kids as they can each create their own unique pizza and its baked for them. Pizza parties, especially with the kids, who like to bake and create their own pizza in the garden of the Restaurant, are very common. Sunday Brunch is also popular in particular roast lamb and roast beef with traditional Yorkshire pudding. A range of open sandwiches, char-grilled salmon sandwiches and home-made burgers with whatever toppings customers want make the menu attractive. They have a very popular Kid’s menu with no Coke or sugar based sparkling drinks listed, rather healthy juices or low fat milk. “We aim offer the healthiest options possible, fries are served by parental consent only.” Families often book adjoining tables to meet up with friends during the weekend. One customer, who lives in a condo, overlooking the restaurant to use them like a corner store, delivering cans of Manao soda and packets of Spaghetti. Bistro 33 is willing to be whatever their customers want!
