Brighter days ahead for the Organic Food Market in India Organic food market is highly unorganized in India, however, the govt. has projected that this market would touch 1.36 billion mark by the year ending 2020. In 2014, this share was 0.36 percent with the major chunk being claimed by conventional pulses and food grains. The study has been done by Industry body Assocham and TechSci Research. Acc. to the study, the future is bright with more potential to grow. The major hurdle however, is still the lack of awareness among people about organic farming despite the govt. spending crores of rupees every year. The major benefit of organic farming is not only of land and water resources protection but also increase in farm’s produce and thus income.

The need of the hour is to increase the awareness level about organic food as it is still limited to consumers in metro cities. The study suggests that food companies should also come forward and work hand in hand with the govt. agencies and run different training programs for farmers and consumers both.

All this exercise will further help in proper utilization of resources, better quality produce and thus one could see increase in productivity and consumption. Along with increasing the focus on increasing domestic earnings, the study suggests that organic farm producers should also focus on export to Middle-East and South-East Asian countries. Until now, organic farming is practiced in 12 states of India over an area of 4.72 million hectares. With the increasing awareness about health, changing lifestyles and increased spending, organic food market has a brighter future ahead.
