AND THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION

ISSUE 07 APR/MAY 2013

RAZIKO

JANUARY 25TH 2011 REMAINS A CONTROVERSIAL AND HIGHLY CONTESTED DAY FOR THE CITIZENS OF EGYPT. It is the date that marked the beginning of on-going riots and violence for the people of Egypt. Today, the nation remains divided. Members of opposing parties openly protest and engage in acts of civil disobedience against the government. The political instability and volatile state of the nation has made its way into every aspect of Egyptian society over the past two years. In the wake of revolution, even football has taken a direct hit on a national level. Every youth club and league throughout Egypt has been called off due to the polar state of society. As a result, fans and players alike have felt the widespread effects of political upheaval. Twenty-year old Raziko, however, has never allowed restrictions to influence or deter him from his dreams. “I was told I had talent. But I was also told that I was too small” explains Raziko. In spite of what others told him, Raziko visited the gym and field every day with one goal in mind. Raziko was training so that one day he would make the roster for one of Egypt’s elite clubs. MITOO FOOTBALL REVOLUTION

After eight years of commitment and practice, Raziko’s dreams of becoming a footballer were realized when he was promised a spot on Egypt’s Zamalek SC team. This club ranked as one of the most competitive Egyptian Youth Leagues. Raziko’s dreams were unfortunately short lived. He was promised a spot on the team just weeks before the Revolution. He has now spent the past two years refashioning his dream in the aftermath of the Egyptian football standstill. Although the discontent throughout Egypt is undeniable, Raziko has refused to give up on his passion.

love something as much as I love football and freestyle.” Raziko is prepared to overcome additional barriers that might be ahead. Any challenge that he may face cannot break the courage he has to take his passion for football worldwide. Photos by Mohamed samir shola

“I WAS TOLD I HAD TALENT. BUT I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I WAS TOO SMALL” Raziko has decided to redirect his energy and talent toward reinventing himself as a freestyle footballer. He has created a new dream for himself. He explains his new vision, “I see myself in clips of music videos internationally. Free styling, break dancing and playing football.” Although Cairo has been Raziko’s home and source of comfort for twenty years, he realizes that the time has come for him to leave behind the comforts of home to pursue his dreams. “You cannot change your dreams when you

ONE WORLD FUTBOL TAKE A USED GARBAGE BAG, SOME TRASH AND TIE IT ALL TOGETHER WITH A PIECE OF STRING. THIS HOME MADE RAG BALL IS OFTEN THE CLOSEST RESEMBLENSE THAT THE CHILDREN OF DARFUR HAD TO A PROPER FOOTBALL. ISSUE 07 APR/MAY 2013

ONE WORLD

CHILDREN FROM EVERY COUNTRY ACROSS THE WORLD SHARE A UNIVERSAL DESIRE TO PLAY. Children living in Darfur, however, face a slightly different reality. These children live on a daily basis knowing that they could be displaced from their homes or subjected to militant war efforts. How is it possible for these children to hold onto their childhood in times of widespread political upheaval?

“WE HAVE CREATED A BALL THAT IS TRULY AS DURABLE AS THE SPIRITS OF THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH WHO PLAY WITH IT.” In 2006, one man watched a news report as the children of Darfur played football with a rag ball that was put together with pieces of trash, a plastic bag and some string. It was in that moment that Tim Jahnigen understood that even during times of internal turmoil and warfare, children will always continue to play. This realization inspired him to create the One World Futbol and launch One World Futbol Project. Jahnigen, who is the Founder and Chief Innovation Officer of One World Futbol Project says: “When you give a kid a ball – you don’t have to explain it. Children

instinctively know what to do with a ball.” Jahnigen’s goal was to create an ultra-durable ball for children across the world so that - no matter how brutal the living conditions - children no longer had to rely on standard balls or collected trash to play the game of football. One World Futbol Project wants to provide children with the most basic element of football; the ball itself. This goal taps into a child’s natural instinct to play. When a child is given a virtuallyindestructible ball, the ball itself provides a healing power for those children living in harsh, impoverished areas around the world. Chief Business Officer, Eric Fothinham explains, “We make a simple tool for children – the One World Futbol is designed to withstand the harshest conditions around the world where children and youth are most often playing; in places without football fields, on surfaces such as gravel and rocks; in places with barbed wire and thorns; in all of these places and throughout harsh environmental conditions children simply want to keep playing. We help them play by giving them a virtually-indestructible soccer ball that never needs a pump and never goes flat, even when punctured.”

that the need to play is felt by children around the world. The ultimate vision of the Project is to distribute One World Futbols wherever they are needed - to impoverished areas, UN hot spots, conflict zones, and inner cities all over the world. By recognizing the needs of the youth in these areas, One World Futbol Project believes that they are able to bring the power of play to the children who need it most. Jahnigen noted: “We have created a ball that is truly as durable as the spirits of the children and youth who play with it.” The creators of the Project realize the significance of football as the world’s most enduring and popular sport, with billions of fans and hundreds of millions of youth players worldwide. “We know that football can truly touch lives, inspire people to action, provide opportunities, and help bring positive change to children and youth worldwide,” added Frothingham. One World Futbol Project aims to bring joy to children everywhere through the healing power of play. You can spread the word and follow the adventures of the One World Futbol adventures at:

ONE YEAR

IT’S NO COINCIDENCE THAT OUR MANIFESTO FOOTBALL REVOLUTION STARTED IN LONDON. Here the contrast between the lavish limelight of the Premiership and the lack of support for mass participation football is pretty stark, especially given the aspirations of English football in the international arena. And yet there is no better place like England to start a change. This is where many organic trends started and then went on conquering the world. Futsal and Freestyle are taking the UK by storm, they are redefining the English game but also changing our football identity that is becoming more cool, more street and more radical. This worldwide collective scene is fast becoming aware of itself and Football Revolution is in our modest view the icebreaker that will shape its image. In just one year, we have travelled from London to the depths of Africa and Cambodia, looked at the new freestyle trends and closely examined the state of football in the UK. With each publication, we strive to expose the true nature of football and the various ways in which it is a sport that continues to shape and define our culture.

We believe in the power of football. When we talk about the power of football, we are referring to it as the world’s universal sport, language and culture. We are working to promote it as a symbol of hope for people across the world. We believe that football can be used as a tool against violence and despair across the world. We aim to celebrate the players, coaches and organisations that spread the same message of the beautiful game.

THIS WORLDWIDE COLLECTIVE SCENE IS FAST BECOMING AWARE OF ITSELF AND FOOTBALL REVOLUTION IS IN OUR VIEW THE ICEBREAKER THAT WILL SHAPE ITS IMAGE.

We want you: your story, the story of your team. We want to work together to celebrate the impact that football has had on your life. Much like the impact it has had on us here at Mitoo.

THIS SUMMER FOOTBALL REVOLUTION WILL BECOME A FULL LENGHT FEATURE DOCUMENTARY ABOUT YOUTH FOOTBALL AND FUTSAL IN THE UK. IF YOU WANT TO CONTRIBUTE PLEASE CONTACT US.

Promoting the image and visibility of mass partecipation football was our goal when we launched the magazine one year ago. How successful have we been at reaching this goal? With six publications and a growing audience of over 1.5 million readers, we believe that we are well on our way to bringing mass participation football international attention and the support that it deserves.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped us so far. We would also like to ask for the help of our growing audience. ISSUE 07 APR/MAY 2013

THE GEAR MERCURIAL VAPOR IX BY NIKE

home of the football boot experts! MITOO FOOTBALL REVOLUTION

27 THE SPEED OF BRIGHT Since it’s introduction in the early 2000’s, Nike’s Mercurial Vapor has captured the imagination of professional players and amateurs alike. Whether queueing outside a Niketown to grab a pair of the legendary Chrome-and-Lime coloured cleats from the 2002 World Cup or seeking out a pair of the garishly-coloured models from the more recent incarnations, most amateur players now have a ‘Mercurial memory’ that keeps them coming back to the range. It’s fair to say, then, that one of the calling cards of the Nike Mercurial range is it’s bold colour palette. Where other boots have feared to tread, the Mercurial has been happy to walk (or sprint), and Nike have once again broken the mould with the Vapor IX. Launching in two head-turning colourways - Fireberry and Sunset - the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX is designed to make players feel exceptional before they even step out on the pitch. The Vapor IX is the first Mercurial to use the Nike’s ‘Speed Control Texture’, a super-soft, dimpled finish to the standard synthetic upper. As well as adding additional friction and tactile feedback for players controlling the ball at speed, combined with the constantly-changing

colourways and luminous branding, the whole boot radiates a futuristic, almost alien texture. The soleplate is equally groundbreaking. Having learnt from the durability issues that plagued the otherwise-excellent Vapor VIII, Nike have added a a second level of density to that of the Vapor IX, encasing the glass-fibre chassis in a more durable plastic shell, that helps the boot become more abrasion resistant, without compromising on comfort and flexibility. With only two heel studs, the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX is designed to engage and disengage the ground faster than your average boot, helping keep a player on their toes for explosive acceleration and adaptable traction. Nike are also bringing along their ACC technology from the end of 2012 - so as well as having an unusual look, the Vapor IX actually feels more frictious in the hand, and gives a more consistent touch on the ball, even when it’s wet. Available to order now, the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX retails at £144.99 or $224.99 US.
