a note from the pl ay wright This is the sixth play produced through the Original Theatre Project. Past projects have grown beyond their initial origins and been restaged in Chicago, Milwaukee and New York. This collaboration with Carthage under the direction of Professor Neil Scharnick has pushed us into new and exciting territory. Patrick’s work with the cast initiated the project. He shared the material with me and guided me through a couple of drafts but very soon Professor Scharnick took over and brought the script back to the cast to explore and develop further. The Carthage creative team began to build the production and the play got a much more extended rehearsal period than such projects have previously been allowed. The group travelled to Ireland and Patrick and I got the chance to get back in the game and to share in the excitement of working with this wonderful group of talented people in the final shaping and honing of the piece you’ll see tonight. The play examines how we learn and understand the structure of stories, where writers find them, how audiences expectations shape them and how writers, performers, directors and audience together create the imaginary world of the play. When a rook finds food, it eats some, puts some away and then calls it’s fellows to share the rest. They feast and chatter to each other and flap about and show off, clean up all the scraps and head off. When the coast is clear the host digs up the private stash and finishes it off. There’s some sort of lesson here for us all in the balance of independence and social collaboration. We’re all privileged to be part of the team, all aware of the immense potential reach of the collective beyond the capacity of the individual. As theatre artists we must sustain ourselves through our own imaginative work, our own explorations and efforts and discoveries. But we really come alive in sharing this stuff with others, rehearsing, performing, watching and feeding off each other, being part of the great collective human experience that is theatre. And when it works for us there will always be a moment after, in the instant dark of the curtain, a twilight moment in front of a mirror, a chuckle as we step out into the night, when we can feast on the sweet kernel of something private that will nourish us till next time. - Martin Maguire a n o t e f r o m pat r i c k s u t to n In 1998, a student from Carthage attended our four week Irish Theatre January Interim Programme at the Gaiety School of Acting and a fuse was lit! Fourteen years later I travelled to Carthage to begin the exhilarating process of exploring the ideas and images and starting points that have become the soul of A Clamour of Rooks--the show you will see this evening. The Original Theatre Project is a refreshing opportunity for theatre students to engage in a creative process that at first is non prescriptive and that hands the torch of creativity to the performer and the vital and vibrant surround team. At Carthage in September we laughed and played and built and knocked down. We imagined and we feared, we flew and we crash landed. The work that every single one of the participants (that you will meet tonight) put in was fearless and inspirational. There were times when Neil (who was that student in 1998 and is now Assistant Professor of Theatre and director of tonight’s show) and I looked at each other in awe at the brightness and the life that was pouring from the stage. At the end of the week I packed my bag and headed home to meet writer Martin Maguire who then had the task of looking at a thousand photographs, hours of video footage, pages of original writings and art galleries full of images to begin the journey of building the show you are sharing in this evening. The collaboration has been rich and A Clamour of Rooks

the conversations deep as Neil and Martin and the actors tease out and work their way through the material. Give and take and beg and borrow and steal are all in the mix as Neil worked through drafts in US based rehearsals prior to the January arrival in Dublin for the premiere. To Martin. Thanks again and great credit to Neil and the powers that be at Carthage for making this process happen. At the end of the day I’ll save my final toast for the actors and crew you will meet this evening who took a risk with me and took the journey leading to tonight. Enjoy A Clamour of Rooks and thank you for being with us this evening. - Patrick Sutton Director, The Gaiety School of Acting, National Theatre School of Ireland. a n o t e f r o m t h e d i r e c to r One of the many reasons I’m so proud and delighted to teach and direct for the Carthage Theatre Department is that it’s more deeply committed to new and innovative work than any other program I know. This commitment has made it possible for me to offer a class called Ensemble & Experimental Acting every January, giving students the chance to think differently about what theatre is, how it’s created, who makes it, who determines its meaning, and what it looks like. The students who brought A Clamour of Rooks to life did so in part in the context of that class. The department’s commitment to new plays has also inspired the ambitious New Works Initiative, a program for commissioning new plays to be developed and premiered by our students. The exceptional writers who have participated in the initiative to date-from Eric Simonson in 2009 to Martin Maguire in 2013 (and Jeffrey Hatcher, coming 2014!)--have each provided priceless opportunities for our students to originate roles, often roles written specifically for them. A Clamour of Rooks is also the product of this initiative. And yet it is also something more. I enrolled in a course at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin when I was a Carthage student, and I remember my time there fondly. I’ve longed to find a way for my students to collaborate with the GSA and bring a show to Ireland since joining the Carthage Theatre faculty nine years ago. To make a very long story very short: we’ve done it. It brings me a great deal of joy and satisfaction to see that dream realized. The process by which this play was created has been thrillingly collaborative, but the world of our Clamour ultimately owes its existence to Martin Magurie. As I’ve delved deeper into this play, my awe for our playwright’s vision and insight has grown and grown. This ambitious work artfully explores the archtypal heroes journey, the writing process, art as psychotherapy, the function of fairy tale, and so much more. We could not have hoped for a more exciting and challenging project. Thank you, Martin--and Patrick-and thank you to our audience for joining us at the end of this journey. - Neil Kristian Scharnick

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education; Dr. Gerald and Paula McNichols Foundation; The Honorable Stuart Bernstein and Wilma E. Bernstein; the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund; and the National Committee for the Performing Arts. This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in college-level theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels. Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for inclusion at the KCACTF regional festival and can also be considered for invitation to the KCACTF national festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC in the spring of 2013. Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.
