ABOUT THE PL AY WRIGHT Richard Kalinoski’s most well-known play, BEAST ON THE MOON, was chosen for the Humana Festival in March of 1995 and has since won the following awards: The Osborn Award (American Critics Association); the Agnouni Award (Armenian Relief Society of North America); the Garland Award (Backstage West); Best Play from the Repertory, Moliere Award (Prix Moliere, Paris, France in May 2001 and in addition to four other Moliere Awards), and the ACE Award (Argentina) for Best Play of 2001. BEAST ON THE MOON opened on April 27, 2005 off-Broadway at the Century Center Theater in Manhattan. The play ran 120 performances, including seventeen previews, and was named one of five “must see” plays in New York by the New York Daily News. In December of 2005, Richard Kalinoski was awarded the Khorenatsi Medal for contribution to the Arts from the Country of Armenia. The award was given by the President of Armenia, Robert Kachadarian. BEAST ON THE MOON has been translated into at least twelve languages and has had long runs at theatres in Athens, Moscow (the Moscow Art Theatre), Buenos Aires, Paris, London and New York. In March 2010, BEAST ON THE MOON was installed as part
of the permanent repertory of the Tallinn City Theatre, Estonia. The play has also had four productions in Chicago as well as productions at the Alliance in Atlanta, the Asolo in Florida, the Artists Repertory in Portland, Oregon and some forty other venues in the United States and Puerto Rico. Mr. Kalinoski’s play, MY SOLDIERS, premiered at Eastern University near Philadelphia in November 2009 and a UWOshkosh production, directed by Merlaine Angwall, was chosen for presentation at the Midwest Regional American College Theatre Festival (sponsored by the Kennedy Center) in January 2011. FORMALDEHYDE, a short play by Kalinoski, won the Jury Prize at the Fusion Theatre in Albuquerque, new Mexico and was produced professionally as part of the theatre’s THE SEVEN (seven short plays selected for international competition). FORMALDEHYDE went on to win the Audience Favorite Award at the Fusion Theatre in June 2011. Mr. Kalinoski’s play, BETWEEN MEN AND CATTLE (Barrymore nomination, Philadelphia 2000), was given a meticulous production at Next Act Theatre in Milwaukee in 2004. Mr. Kalinoski is a three time veteran of the National Playwright’s Conference at the O’Neill Center in Connecticut. Since 1998, he has been a director and resident playwright at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S In 1995, I had the great fortune to be cast as Seta in Beast on the Moon at the Milwaukee Chamber Theater. The playwright, Richard Kalinoski, spent some time with the cast, which often happens when a play is fairly new. He shared with us that he had been married to a woman of Armenian descent, and the play was an amalgam of her relatives’ stories and personal experiences of the Armenian genocide and subsequent immigration to the United States. Beast on the Moon
is a play rich in historical fact, addressing the impact of a genocide that has been roundly ignored to this day. This back story is very important to the plot - it is what brought Aram and Seta together, and ironically what keeps them apart - but it is not the heart of the play. The story is about what happens after, about picking up the pieces and moving forward. It is about the remarkable way humans are able to survive unspeakable pain and go on to cobble together a life in spite of it. Beast on the Moon

I N TA N D E M N E E D S YO U ! We’ve accomplished a great deal for a small company since we began in 1998 and we are excited about the possibilities the future holds. As a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization, In Tandem Theatre relies on the generosity of our patrons and friends to keep moving forward. Ticket sales, which we try to keep as reasonable as possible, can’t cover the entire costs of producing professional quality theatre. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to our annual campaign and see your contribution go directly toward productions costs (actor and designer salaries; props, costumes, sets, lights; script royalties and marketing).
