D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S It’s hard not to love Spelling Bee. It’s filled with joy, terror, and lots of heart. It allows us to enjoy the competition that has brought these individuals together; feel the pressure, pain, and vulnerability of being exposed and alone in competition; challenges us to redefine winners and losers; and reveals the way that competition can bring out the best, and worst, in all of us. It exposes the mystery of language – that with so many words to choose from, how difficult it is to find one’s own voice and a way to express one’s thoughts, ideas and feelings. It’s easy to relate to our six final spellers – adolescent individuals discovering who they are, real humans, struggling to connect with their peers, overcoming their insecurities by focusing on special talents that set them apart. Add to that the unpredictable nature of Spelling Bee. No two performances are ever exactly alike; and with every production, the audience is the final character, bringing a new energy to every performance. But Bee takes this further – enlisting four audience spellers to compete in the bee with each performance. Although terrifying, the outcome of every performance becomes truly unpredictable (a director’s nightmare) and absolutely unique with each performance. Ahh, “life is pandemonium.” So, we are all a part of the Spelling Bee – thanks for participating - play hard, play fair, and enjoy yourselves. Todd

Based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by The Farm The Barrington Stage Company workshop of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was originally co-directed by Michael Barakiva and Rebecca Feldman. The Farm was founded in 2000 by Rebecca Feldman, Artistic Director. It is collective of writers and performers, including Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg. The Farm’s interest is in the role of improvisation in creating new work for theatre. The Farm initially designates a two-week intensive period in which to discover, develop, and rehearse a play from the impulses borne mainly out of the pressure of a deadline. Previous projects include Super (an Atlantic Theatre Studios), Why I Hate Florida (workshop at White Wave in DUMBO) and C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E (at the Present Company Theatorium in October 2002), on which The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is based. M E S S AG E F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R Hello from the New Artistic Director! Welcome to the first show of our 2010-11 season! In keeping with our season selection goals, we have planned a year of engaging and entertaining theatre for you. We know how exciting it can be to watch the growth of our young performers as they stretch themselves in new and diverse ways on our stage each year, and we’re glad you’re here to witness it. In choosing our season, we are guided by the following goals: 1. To present works of quality that showcase our students’ talents in a production season that serves as their training laboratory. 2. To give our students the opportunity to experience working with a wide range of theatrical genres in their four years. 3. To present our audience with both productions that entertain and productions that challenge. 4. To select seasons that are balanced in regards to gender, cast size, design requirements, comedy/drama, budgetary expenditures, etc. 5. To select a season of plays that will be financially responsible, pedagogically valuable to our students, and artistically fulfilling. 6. To frequently produce shows that permit a campus relationship – i.e. subject matter that serves an academic discipline and/or maintains a commitment to social justice and the Jesuit Mission. In the training of our theatre students, we think it is important to give them experiences working with a variety of artists. We are very fortunate to have several fine theatre professionals working as guest artists with our students on this season’s productions. This year we are pleased to have the ever-creative Todd Denning, a company member of First Stage Milwaukee, as the guest director for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. For our November production of The Beaux’ Stratagem we will welcome two talented designers from outside the state to collaborate: Ron Naverson, scenic designer from Southern Illinois University, and Michael McNamara, lighting designer from Purdue University. We are also pleased to welcome back our alum Erin SlatteryBlack who will be the guest costume designer for A Year with Frog and Toad this January. We are proud to say that Erin is the recipient of two daytime Emmy awards for her costume designs for the Muppets of Sesame Street. In February, the scenic designer for The Laramie Project will be David Krajec of Mainstage Theatrical here in Milwaukee. David will also be working with our students on The Beaux’ Stratagem as the stage combat choreographer. Our most ambitious collaboration this year, however, is our work with the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre on the last offering of the season, The Lion in Winter. MCT’S Artistic Director, C. Michael Wright will direct three of our students along with four Equity actors in this fabulous play. Three of our faculty will design: Stephen Hudson-Mairet (scenery), Chester Loeffler-Bell (lights), and yours truly (costumes). We will have five student understudies, several student assistant designers and an assistant director on this production, working with the professionals at Chamber Theatre. This performance will be presented on the Cabot Stage of the Broadway Theatre Center, and will truly be a unique experience for the Theatre Arts students as well as our audience members. If you enjoy the performance, won’t you please tell your friends? We’d like to share the fine work our students do with everyone. Debra Krajec

CENTENNIAL OF JOURNALISM AT MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY
IT’S A DEVELOPING STORY One hundred years ago, John Copus, a former journalist turned Jesuit priest, decided that Marquette University’s urban campus in Milwaukee would be the perfect place to start the first journalism program at any Catholic university in the world. During the 2010-2011 academic year, the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication proudly celebrates this centennial of journalism education at Marquette. We invite everyone–especially our alumni, faculty and staff–to join us as we remember our beginnings and look to our future. DIGITAL. DISTINCTIVE. DIVERSE. We are Marquette!
