‘Supporting the Unsung Hero’ is a tailored business programme designed to meet the needs of Armed Forces families, and was one of the original bids to the £35 million LIBOR fund. Since then, the course and mentoring programme has been in high demand having already been attended by 520 delegates with 740 expected to complete the programme by 2021. HSBC bank recently announced it will continue to sponsor the programme enabling the delivery team at the University of Wolverhampton and Black Country Chamber of Commerce to further expand on the already award winning programme.

work together and share their skills to develop new products and services. Sarah Walker, ‘Supporting the Unsung Hero’ Project Manager and Lead Trainer, says: “We are proud to be leading this programme and are very grateful to HSBC for continuing to fund the venture which forms an integral part of our range of opportunities for those who are currently serving in the Armed Forces their families and Veterans. This programme has the potential to create in excess of 700 new business start-ups by the end of 2021, significantly boosting our economy on a local and national scale.”

Once enrolled on the course participants also benefit from a closed online forum to encourage peer support and interaction with other delegates. Some members have started local business networking groups and have formed alliances to

Who can apply for the programme? The programme is open to a spouse or dependant (over the age of 16) of a Service person, Veteran or Reservist. We are also pleased to announce that we now accept applications from Armed Forces Veterans. How long does the programme last? Each Cohort will run for 10 months including 4 days of class based training with an experienced team of business advisers and dedicated one to one mentoring delivered either in person or virtually. When does the programme start? There are a range of start dates for each cohort to fit your requirements, contact the SUH team to find out the best course date and location to suit the individual. Is there a fee to attend the programme? There is no cost to participate in the programme as funding has been provided by the Armed Forces Covenant (LIBOR) Fund and the HSBC Bank (travel, accommodation and expenses incurred are not included). What type of business can delegates set up? The type of business set up is entirely up to the individual and could range from professional business consultancy, crafts and handmade gifts, bespoke art, catering services or personal fitness instructors. Participants may have a couple of business ideas and wish to use the course to explore each option or may not have a specific business in mind but wish to understand the basic principles of business start-up and gain inspiration from others. Can delegates set up a joint business with a family member or friend? Yes, delegates can set up a joint business with a family member or friend/s although only the eligible Spouse, Dependant or Veteran can attend the training course. Can those already running a business apply? Yes, delegates may still participate in the programme if already running a business in its infancy or need to develop their understanding of basic business management.

Courses are run throughout the UK at MOD bases from Scotland to Portsmouth and overseas in Cyprus, Belgium, Germany and Gibraltar. Mentoring and seminars are also delivered on-line via Skype or Facebook to make the course as accessible as possible and to allow for service mobility and family commitments. Delegates are offered a dedicated four-day business start-up training course, where they will learn and develop the skills required to run a business and understand their legal, financial and tax obligations, basic record keeping, marketing and how to write that all important business plan.

‘Supporting the Unsung Hero’ FAQ’s

Sally Wagstaff, a former Nurse in the Royal Navy and military spouse, enrolled on the first programme in October 2013. Since completing the course she has opened a state-of-the-art laser hair removal clinic in Lichfield and has since built on her success, opening a further salon at Aston Wood Golf and Country Club. She says: “I simply wouldn’t have started my business without the Supporting the Unsung Hero Business programme. The course has been so important, from giving me the confidence to launch to teaching me the skills to run and importantly grow my business. I recommend the programme highly.” Sarah Walker, Project Manager, said, “There is no end to the talent and resources within the Armed Forces community. As we enter the fourth year of the programme we hope to deliver in new locations such as Gibraltar to enable as many service spouses to access the course as possible, especially those who are in remote locations or overseas. ”

Who will be mentoring programme delegates? We are a team of friendly business experts from the University of Wolverhampton’s Business Solutions Centre. Participants are assigned an individual mentor for the duration of the programme. Once enrolled delegates will also be able to access a closed Facebook page which has proven to be a great source of peer-to-peer support. Are the training and mentoring sessions flexible? The dates of the four-day courses and group mentoring sessions are fixed. Individual mentoring sessions are flexible and can be delivered via Skype, phone or face to face. Are delegates obliged to set up a business by the end of the programme? There is no obligation to set up a business by the end of the programme, but ideally those who have completed the course will have a business up and running, as this is the aim of the programme. What will delegates achieve at the end of the programme? Participants will have all the tools and information required to kick-start their business. A certificate will also be awarded to demonstrate successful completion of the course and will become members of a unique group of like-minded people from the military community. If you have a business idea and need the skills and support to launch or you want to find out if running a business could be an opportunity for you contact the ‘Supporting the Unsung Hero’ team: Telephone: 01902 321 272 Email: suh@wlv.ac.uk Website: wlv.ac.uk/supportingtheunsunghero

MILITARY PERCEPTION Have you ever watched a film or TV show about military life and thought – this is complete nonsense? Or perhaps you have watched others and experienced that ‘Eureka!’ moment that someone had actually depicted one of the many facets of the armed forces with terrifying accuracy? Or maybe you just completely avoid these shows altogether and watch Love Island instead? We take a look at what military insiders really think of how the media portray their lives… Our Girl, the BBC drama about a female medic in the British Army, has come in for mixed reviews. On one hand there have been a loyal band of followers who love the concept of the no-hoper, drop out teenager whose life is turned around after spotting the army recruitment poster and is then propelled onto much greater things. While there are others who find it completely unrealistic and perhaps a bit clichéd and predictable. There’s an entire volume of threads on Mumsnet devoted entirely to the appreciation of one character, Captain John. And there has also been much speculation over which soap actor – EastEnders’

Stacey or Corrie’s Tina – was better in the main role. So it has most definitely created a stir amongst the general viewing public. But does it reflect military life with any degree of accuracy? And does watching Michelle Keegan in her role as medic Georgie Lane make you sigh with relief at the fact civilians will be seeing the truth of military life or yell at the TV in disgust?! Peter* an army veteran who has served in Iraq, told us: “I wasn’t even sure I wanted to watch this programme because the ads made

Does watching Michelle Keegan in her role as medic Georgie Lane make you sigh with relief at the fact civilians will be seeing the truth of military life or yell at the TV in disgust?! it look like total bunkum. Firstly, wearing make-up in a combat situation - what’s that all about? It’s not exactly camouflage. In my knowledge most medics involved in CASEVAC (casualty evacuation) do so by air and there would be a Chinook or a Merlin on duties with a team of medics to deploy. “To be honest, some of the things that happen are real - for example, the banter. But you have got to remember that quite a lot of soldiers are youngsters who are in a big gang and they get up to some vile, bawdy stuff together. They do show a toned down version of this on Our Girl, but they don’t really show the full reality. I guess the BBC would get into big trouble if they did! Also, the manner of injuries in combat are unthinkable and could not be realistically reproduced on prime time TV.” Clare Macnaughton, a writer and blogger who runs the Modern Military Mother blog said she has not watched Our Girl and tends to avoid these kinds of dramas. While she has enjoyed epic military productions such as Band of Brothers, she says some are not quite so slick (such as Ultimate Force) and can be a real turn off. She said, “The problem with military dramas is they aren’t written with the black humour of the military. Unless they are high budget and American. Also, they say ‘over and out’ which is the biggest faux pas.”

spouse or loved one will have a more balanced and truthful insight into what this life is like, others do not. Pat*, the wife a military veteran and mother of a son currently serving, said: “I used to really enjoy Soldier Soldier. It wasn’t exactly ‘realistic’ as such but some things were done well - I think it was filmed on an actual army base so the houses the families lived in seemed a lot more realistic than in other dramas where their houses look far too smart. I don’t think any dramas I have seen recently show the realities of living in service accommodation! “The other thing which is never shown on TV dramas is the down time and fear in between all the drama and chaos of battle. My son recalls far too many times when he would just sit in his tent on a posting and listen to firing taking place for hours on end. Obviously it’s hard to show that on TV - it would be pretty boring. But I think a lot of civilians think it is all action. And it’s not, necessarily.”

But Lucy* a military wife, said she absolutely loves the programme. “I have no idea if it’s like the real thing as my husband has never really talked about what it’s like in certain areas. But, if I am completely honest, I absolutely love it.”

One spouse who also wanted to remain anonymous said, “Unfortunately I have not watched Our Girl, but perhaps this answers your question! The reason I have chosen not to watch it is because I find the programmes that are accurate are often upsetting and bring up emotions and memories that are unwelcome. Equally, those that are inaccurate I find insulting and more often than not, do not portray a genuine image of what military life is like for families who are left behind. As such, I avoid them altogether and prefer to watch programmes that bring a new dimension of entertainment, rather than an upsettingly accurate, or insultingly superficial representation of military life.”

One of the main difficulties with TV dramas about the armed forces is the impression they give to civilians about life in the armed forces. While those of us who have experienced any elements of the military either in person or second hand through a partner,

What does military life, chewable necklaces and championing mothers in business all have in common? Entrepreneur Suzy Olivier, military wife and mother of 2.

S

uzy has been running businesses for 11 years, but it was only when her husband joined the RAF back in 2011 that she realised new opportunities in business that allowed for regular house moves and soon to arrive children. Making her start in business with a Personal Training and Physiotherapy company in Oxfordshire, Suzy’s husband joined the RAF and began their first posting in Portsmouth. Thankfully she had a great team in place and the business continued to thrive, although another house move to St Athan, Wales and the impending birth of her first daughter put strain on running a successful service and location based business remotely. As much as anyone would enjoy the good life of not having to go out to work every day, not working and not having any challenges to get stuck into left Suzy unfulfilled and craving something more. Soon after the birth of her daughter Belle, Suzy was determined to find her next business adventure. Now that her little one was here, going back to work as a personal trainer, or another kind of work that

required childcare and not being a full time stay at home mum just wasn’t an option. Suzy was determined like never before to find her solution to not only generating income, but allowing her the luxury of being at home with Belle. After months of wracking her brain for possible ideas and inventions that she could make her new business about, Suzy stumbled upon a possible product in a way that she says could only be described as a moment of divine intervention! Chewable jewellery. Jewellery that mums wear, but that’s completely safe for teething babies to chew on. After some research and realising that it was a very established and successful product in the USA and Australia but it hadn’t made it’s way to the UK yet, Suzy knew this was it. Through some serious grit and hard work, Suzy went about creating and manufacturing stylish teething jewellery that women (regardless of the mothering status) would love to wear. As Suzy had very limited start up capital, she was determined to do as much of the work as possible. Thankfully Belle was a good sleeper, so Suzy was able to design the website,

branding, graphics and everything else that she could using Google and YouTube to help her figure it out. In July 2014, Mama + Belle Teething Jewellery was launched. The business grew very quickly and in days was being requested by various stores all over the UK wanting to stock Mama + Belle products. Suzy soon realised that running a successful e-commerce business, looking after a 6 month old baby and remotely managing a service based company in Oxfordshire (whilst living far away from friends and family), wasn’t going to work. So a few months after launching, Suzy said her farewell to her first business and focused all her energy and effort on growing Mama + Belle and baby Belle. Not too long after that another house move and another pregnancy set a few more fun challenges in Suzy’s path. Mama + Belle continued to thrive despite new teething jewellery businesses emerging every day. In September 2016, Mama + Belle went through a rebrand, new products and new website - all of which were a huge success. When Suzy’s youngest daughter Delilah was old enough, Suzy attended her first trade show and that’s when things really got exciting and busy. With a constant flow of retailers all over the world wanting to stock Mama + Belle, Suzy thought the show was a huge success. Though her expectations were about to be shattered when the buying team from John Lewis approached her little stand also wanting to stock her products. Totally in shock and trying very hard to maintain her composure, Suzy made her plans with the buying team and just a few

business, or level up their existing business to help them achieve the lifestyle they and their families deserve.

Despite the world of teething jewellery being very well established now in the UK, with hundreds of businesses and more popping up daily, Mama + Belle has remained on course and continues to grow. Not only that but Suzy wanted to ensure the success of her company was not just limited to herself and her team, which is why, since it’s start, Mama + Belle has been able to have a positive impact through its monthly 10% of profits donations to charity (they’re currently supporting Stella’s Voice in Moldova).

In May 2018 Suzy launched Mothers of Enterprise. An online platform that hosts a variety of free content, inspirational stories, a free community in the form of the Mothers of Enterprise Society and online courses. Despite all she’s achieved, Suzy remains modest and says, “Don’t get me wrong, I certainly don’t consider myself some all knowing business goddess, far from it. I’ve got a lot to learn, and one of the joys of business, especially online business, is that it’s constantly changing and evolving, so I’ll be learning and improving for life. But I know I can and want to teach those who are a few steps behind me on their business journey and learn from those who are a few steps ahead. I know that my overwhelming passion and drive for business and all it has to offer will spur me on in creating and building this business, (through my own knowledge and the amazingly successful ladies who will feature on MoE) into a thriving information and inspirational hub for mothers in business.”

Over the last few years, Suzy has been receiving emails, messages and phone calls from mums that resonate with her story and need some guidance on how to set up a business of their own. As much as Suzy tried to work with, and help, these mums, running a busy business, a household and keeping up with two kiddies meant her time was extremely limited. Suzy realised a passion and mission for her life that she wasn’t aware of before. Knowing that her business has allowed her the privilege of being a full time stay at home mum, and knowing of SO many others mums who would love to do the same but their finances simply don’t allow them to, Suzy realised that she wanted to start empowering and educating mothers with the tools they need to start their own

What’s special about Mothers of Enterprise? With a world of knowledge out there and courses for everything you could imagine, Suzy wanted to create her courses

differently. Courses that won’t just give you parts of the puzzle, but the whole picture with step by step guidance and support. Suzy wanted a place that was created and designed just for mums. She says “when you’ve got a baby feeding around the clock, or school runs and a household to run, you simply don’t have time to sit down for hours on end watching training videos or making your way through a workbook thicker than the Yellow Pages. You need straight talking, to the point and actionable advice. Something you can learn and use immediately. Not only that, but you need support and motivation when life and business start feeling overwhelming or any set backs set in. I’ve been there, I’ve walked the walk and I know how hard it can be, but also know how amazingly fulfilling it can be when things go right. I want to be there to help as many women as possible get it right without all the guess work. I hope it’s going to help bring families back together and allow mums one of the ultimate joys of being at home to raise their children.” www.mamaandbelle.com www.facebook.com/mamaandbelle www.mothersofenterprise.com www.facebook.com/mothersofenterprise 9

FROM PASSION TO PROFIT: Turn your hobby into a business

Imagine doing a job which is not only your true passion but which you can take with you from post to post. We meet some military spouses who have turned their hobbies into their career and meet the organisations available to help these military businesses grow. According to a recent survey, the purpose of hobbying in the UK is changing. It turns out that more than one in ten Brits are turning the skills developed through pastimes into business ventures. There are several reasons for entering into a side hussle.

I started to sell in the Craft shop at RAF Akrotiri. When I first moved back to the UK from Cyprus I did the usual: found a boring temporary job behind a desk and hated every minute of it. When it finished, I just couldn’t face the job search again, and the whole interview process made me so anxious.

Claire Duce and her husband Claire Duce, 32, is the mum of a two-

For the majority of hobbyists turned money-makers it’s the need for extra funds on top of their standard wage, said Norton Finance which carried out the survey. But there are other motivations - some people want to boost their pension pots, others are saving for a holiday. And then, of course, there are armed forces spouses. For, as we all know, if you are married to the military, having a job which is relocation-proof is pretty much The Dream. And what could be more ideal than making money from something which you can do around military and family life and for which you are truly passionate.

year-old boy and her husband is in the RAF. Volunteering in the RAF base craft shop in Cyprus inspired her with a passion for crafts which she has now turned into a business.

We meet some military spouses who have done just that and turned their hobbies, interests and life passions into their jobs…

“I went travelling after college and saw so many beautiful crafts along the way, this led me into making jewellery which is what

“Before I started running my own business I had done a variety of jobs - waitressing, bar work, retail, admin. I moved around so often it felt hard to imagine having a ‘real’ career path. As a child I was always into anything crafty, my favourite subjects were art, woodwork and design technology and I went to college to study art and design. I have always enjoyed making gifts to give to friends and family.

“It was close to Christmas time, and the orders were coming in from my Facebook page, so I just decided to keep going. When the New Year came, the orders just kept coming, so I decided to go self-employed. It was very scary as I had always had a job of some sort. But we were lucky enough to be in a position to take the risk financially. “I now do a variety of giftware, including wooden plaques, cards, personalised prints, badges and fridge magnets. The military has inspired a lot of my designs, with the “Home is Where the Military Sends Us” plaques and “Sleeps until Daddy is Home” countdown plaques. Being able to create

things that people want, and are willing to pay for is a great feeling, I love that people come to me with ideas and I can make them into something really special and bespoke. I think receiving a gift that has obvious thought put into it is so much more personal than anything you can buy in a shop. “My advice to anyone thinking of turning their hobby into a career is go for it! We spend a good percentage of our lives working, so if you have the chance to earn money doing something you love, it can only lead to a happier life!” Find out more about Claire’s plaques at www.facebook.com/ housestohomes or www.facebook. com/pottymouthhouse

Just to make it more interesting I still had a few clients of my own, so I used to get up at 6am to do an hour’s work before waking the children and getting them ready for school. “I hate the way accountants traditionally work. I can’t believe that people can get clients without being transparent about pricing. No one else could sell something and when the customer asked the price get away with saying “we’ll sort that out later” and then produce a huge unexpected bill and expect it to be paid. “I wanted to do things differently, so after gaining experience in a practice and becoming qualified I started to pick up more and more clients. Through word of mouth I went from having about ten clients to over 250. Through military life I have many clients who have moved away so we do everything by email, Skype, phone etc. I love having such a varied client base and now roughly 30% of my clients aren’t local. I am building a great team to work alongside me and can’t wait to finally have an office with North Devon Accounts over the door. “Whilst North Devon Accounts is based in Braunton, North Devon, many of our clients aren’t. We offer a full range of accountancy services covering sole traders, limited companies,VAT, PAYE, rental accounts and mileage claims. “My advice for anyone thinking of turning their hobby into a business is go for it but plan wisely. Unless you are lucky you probably won’t be able to make a living out of it straight away so you will need to work it around other work and family life which can be difficult. However, it’s worth it in the end.

Rachael Woosey “After I had my first child I started to work part time so took on bookkeeping to help out my brother and a couple of friends. I appreciate it’s not everyone’s idea of a fun hobby but I loved it and seemed to be quite good at it so eventually decided to become a qualified accountant. I got my qualifications part time whilst working and looking after my children. “It was certainly challenging! I was working in an accountancy practice to get more experience four days a week, at college one day a week and trying to run the house and

“Be meticulous about your bookkeeping. How much is each product costing you? What products give you the greatest profit? Without knowing this you will find it hard to start to make a living and won’t be in a position to cost your products properly.”

Jess Sands is 33 and married to a ‘very operational’ RAF C-130 pilot based in crisisresponse at Northwood HQ. They were due to be posted to High Wycombe. When they move Jess said she will also be taking her ‘posting proof’ business Design Jessica with them. “I was always interested in art from an early age, but it wasn’t until I took a foundation

Jess Sands course in design just after A-Level that I realised that you could make a living from it. From there I moved to Bath to study a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and after graduating in 2006 I started working as a children’s book designer designing Disney books – my dream job! I designed everything from Disney Princess to Pirates of the Caribbean and High School Musical books. In fact, the first ever book I ever designed was for the film High School Musical and it reached Number One on the Times Best Selling Book List for over 10 weeks. It’s very much due to the success of the film but is something that I am very proud of. I then moved into designing stationery, calendars and diaries. “My favourite designs were for Simon’s Cat and Caroline Gardner, which won a few awards. I now specialise in branding and corporate design for lots of military-based companies and charities. “When RAF Lyneham closed in 2012 and my husband was posted to RAF Brize Norton we knew that sadly we would need to move away from beautiful Bath so that he could focus on his job. It wasn’t practical for him to be commuting that distance and still be so highly operational. That is why I started my own design business so that I could take it with me. “It took a little while to move from the safety of a company into getting my own list of clients and I have missed my previous work terribly, there’s nothing lovelier than designing a sparkly princess sticker book! But what I have now is a successful business that gives me a real purpose, keeps me busy while my husband is away and takes me to some amazing places. “Life as a designer is so variable, one day I’ll be designing a programme for the Military Wives Choirs and the next I’ll be creating a new branding design for a start-up military spouse entrepreneur. I just love it! 11

“I also love running my own business, and have learnt so many new skills – from HMRC admin and social media marketing to presenting to rooms full of business leaders and running branding courses. Running your own business really does lead you to so many challenges. “My advice to anyone turning their hobby or interest into a business is to have fun and to realise that there is a whole community of spouses doing this, so you can do it too. As a designer, I’ve created my own business that allows me the freedom to work from anywhere we’re posted. And I am not the only one. There are a whole host of business owners, all around the country (and beyond) doing the same and creating amazing businesses.

s well as running her own business Jessica is also runs FEN Business Community. She launched the community because she realised, quite early on into running her own business, there wasn’t the right sort of network or support for spouses in business. “We had been a little bit forgotten,” she explained. With support of the owners at Forces Enterprise Network she started the business community and it now has over 300 members who share advice and tips on Facebook. She has also launched a podcast series, The InDependent Spouse, showcasing some of these spouses. Jessica said: “I thought it was time that some of these amazing spouses had a platform for their stories to be heard. I am passionate about helping other military spouses through the same difficult transition that I made and so the series is full of useful tips and amusing anecdotes, many of which will

She offers collectable, classic and contemporary items made from pearl, which is sourced ethically whilst remaining affordable. Olivia has always loved pearls and has memories of her Dad returning from business trips with some. Her entrepreneurial spirit has also grown with her from her childhood, when she would wash cars and run coffee and tea stands to make money. Gemma from Portsmouth, meanwhile, has set up a rather different business called Cheeky Pix. In contrast to some of the other people who started their own business, she actually bought this one from someone else. At the time she was in a ‘dead end job’ in which she could not see a future. However, one day, whilst visiting a Wedding Fair she came across Cheeky Pix and the rest is history. That was more than three years ago and now the fun photo booth company, which provides photographic mementos from weddings, birthdays, tribute nights, proms, school dances and other events in Portsmouth is a fully-fledged, successful business. What’s more, it provides more than ample distraction for Gemma while her husband is away on deployment. Gemma said: “In terms of running a small business, your reputation is the biggest thing. If people trust you they’ll want to use your service. You also have to be honest with yourself and be strict with what you can handle.”

She told Just for Her: “To people starting up their own business I would say feel the fear and do it anyway. It is scary, but make sure you try it. Transitioning to be the only person making decisions is really hard at first and you carry the business with you

CalEli Gifts Unique Gifts for Unique People For years I used to get really frustrated at never being able to buy my sons, Callum and Elliot, personalised gifts with their names spelt correctly on them. So after 17 years of being a Primary Teacher I decided that I wanted to spend more time with my children and fulfil a life-long ambition of being my own boss. I knew that personalisation was the area that I was keen to focus on as I had never really found gifts that had been exactly what I wanted.

from being a teacher helped! I was adamant that I wanted to be able to personalise names and short messages exactly the way people wanted. In 2016, when I started CalEli Gifts, I attended so many Christmas school fairs, craft events and pop up shops in offices to get my name out there and show people what I could do. Feedback was great and I loved seeing people’s faces when they received their decoration that was just for them.

No not really, I’m working harder than ever but now I can work around them and I don’t miss out on the important things in their lives. To top that, I’m doing everything for us. The boys and my husband have been so supportive and from stamping envelopes with my logo to trips to the post office to helping me at fairs, we are really showing everyone what a small family business is.

In 2017 I designed my own hanging decoration – My Highland Coo and it has been brilliant to see it being sent all over the world with bespoke messages on it for each customer. I also found a fantastic engraving team that I now use so that I can sell personalised gifts all year round for every occasion so whether it’s for a new born baby, wedding, new home or memorial you will find an

As my boys had been such an inspiration to starting my new family business, I wanted them to feature in my company name and so CalEli was formed from their names. Everytime we went on holiday or when our family grew, I would always buy a Christmas Tree Decoration as a keepsake. This is why I decided that the first thing I would sell would be hanging decorations. I spent months trying to find decorations that I could hand personalise myself, thankfully my neat handwriting

appropriate present. It’s not just people that I make gifts and keepsake for - I’ve got lots of pet ones too so that they also feel part of the family! So did starting my own business allow me to spend more times with my sons?

My mission now is to spread the word that CalEli Gifts exists! Not only do I get a real buzz when I receive a new order, I also know that the person giving it is going to feel amazing. Better still, the person receiving it is going to be so impressed with their thoughtfulness. But remember thoughtfulness doesn’t need to be expensive or take a long time. All my hanging decorations are hand personalised and posted the next working day and my other gifts will be in your hands within a week!

Emotional Fitness Carol Robertson PhD 21st century: exciting times for change Recent discoveries about the activity in our brains have been likened to being as exciting as exploring our universe. Through this work we now have important new insights into our emotions, our behaviours and human flexibility. Our ability to learn and change is described well with the term ‘neuroplasticity’. Plasticity here means ‘able to change’, as in mouldable, like the process of forming a sculpture. Whenever neurons link or delink, a cascade of responses also occurs. These may be experienced as new emotional responses, behaviours, abilities and

effects of experiencing traumatic events - such as PTSD, chronic pain, anger, anxieties, fears, rage or unwanted thoughts, memories, feelings, ideas or sensory overwhelm. People have also been using psychosensory processes to become calmer, to reach their goals, and to learn more easily. After

These two example scenarios show how our brains learn and how Havening is being used. In each example I have used the same sensory information to demonstrate how the same element can trigger happy memories for some people and anxiety for others.

Some months later, out with friends eating ice creams they hear the tune, the neural pathway is activated and similar brainwaves and chemistry are experienced, the unpleasant information related to the memory is experienced as a flash-back image, noise or feeling. The person starts to cry and explains to friends they are remembering about the distressing event. The neural pathway is strengthened and the information about this event is added. A few days later the weather is sunny and the person feels stressed (adrenaline and cortisol) when friends invite the person out they cannot face it and say no. They now start to form a belief that they are not coping and want to be on their own, inside. The person contacts a havening practitioner for help. They guide them through a special process called Event Havening which involves very lightly activating the unpleasant memory for a minute. Then Havening Touch is used by the person to generate delta waves as they are guided to think pleasant thoughts for around five to ten minutes. This is believed to enable the neural pathway to delink. To check if the process has been successful the person attempts to activate the neural pathways formed during the unpleasant or traumatising experience and finds that they now have a calmer response. After the session the testing continues and the person notices how they feel about trips out with friends in the sun, responses when the tune is heard or ice cream is seen, smelled or tasted.

Scenario Two A person experiences an event they find fun, it’s a sunny day and a particular tune is heard (serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin are released and a neural pathway is generated) Some days later, out with friends eating ice creams they hear the tune and the neural pathway is activated and similar brainwaves and chemistry are experienced. The person starts to smile and explains to friends they are remembering about the happy event. The neural pathway is strengthened and the information about this event is added. A few days later the person is in a very stressful situation (adrenaline and cortisol) and to calm down and feel resourceful they use Havening to help them manage. First of all the Havening Touch generates delta brainwaves and they begin to feel calmer, and using Ifformational Havening technique (which is designed to activate helpful neural pathways and electrochemistry) they deliberately begin to think about being in that wonderful place, eating ice creams and listening to that particular tune and having altered their own electrochemistry they start to think about ‘what if things improved’ and remembering what resources they have and what can happen if they tap into their skills, senses of humour and flexibility. This chemistry of serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin helps them in a matter of minutes to both feel calmer and more resourceful, and they often even see a funny side to the situation.

The Evolution of the Traditional

‘Army Wife’ By Annie Belasco

These three women walked away from the stereotype of ‘Army Wife’ and self-made their careers…

H

ow many people really understand the term ‘Army Wife’? The title implies that the ‘wife’ is legally bound by marriage to the armed forces. Some would describe this as accurate, in terms of control and dependency, but accept that it comes along with the benefits of being a military spouse such as housing and meeting amazing people. Thankfully the ‘Army Wife’ title is fading and women are being treated as people in their own right, as opposed to an add on to their partners job and rank. Speaking to several women married to male soldiers, I discovered three incredible ‘Army Wives’ who walked out on the ‘Army Wife’ title and into their own careers. (Without cleaning any windows.)

Tracey Anne Knight “As both a military spouse and mother, you make sacrifices. After 16 years of supporting everyone else it was time to turn to fulfilling my own ambitions.”

line, when Tracey turned 40, she felt like she was going through a midlife crisis and needed to follow her dreams. She combined her two passions, history and writing, and proudly wrote her first book ‘Women Warriors: Ten Courageous Lives of Women Who Went to War’ about the lives of military women and the lengths they went to, to hide their identity, so they could fight at war. Tracey now works from home which means her work can travel with her at any point without disturbance to either her home or work life. This works so well for Tracey that her second book “Proudly She Served ” is out in August 2019! An expert in her field, Tracey adores the subject matter and her incredible work is inspirational. Tracey’s work brings a joy to her that, before writing, she hadn’t experienced. “Seeing my name printed on my book was one of mine and my family’s proudest moments.” Tracey’s book is available on Amazon now and you can follow her through her website www.women-warriors.co.uk

Becky Baksh Tracey Anne Knight lives in Newcastle whilst her husband serves with 3 Royal Horse Artillery regiment. She met her soldier whilst at university and set herself up for the reality of army life. Tracey accepted that, due to the commitments of the military, her own career aspirations could potentially not be achievable. Tracey and her family have spent many years travelling around Europe. “Marrying a soldier inevitably means you make sacrifices”. Settling into an office-based role just wasn’t an option as she would be unable to offer the commitment that a business needed whilst supporting her husband’s career. Tracey cannot remember a time when she didn’t write and knew this would be her dream role however she says that “life gets in the way and you turn to more practical jobs to support your family.” Several years down the

“I didn’t want the financial pressure to be solely on my husband.” Childcare can be a financial burden on military families, often meaning that women cannot financially justify working. This was one of Becky’s challenges as a mother of three and married to a soldier and she has since set up her own childcare business, ‘Becky’s Busy Bees.’ She has worked hard at her Ofsted registered childminding business and dedicates many hours to ensuring that all the children she looks after are well cared for. Parents can go to work safe in the knowledge that their children are being nurtured and learning at the same time. Having a great home and work life balance means that although Becky is working, most importantly, she is still available to look after the needs of her family. Her independence is important to her,

irrespective of her husband’s career and she feels that the stereotype of ‘Army Wife’ is becoming a thing of the past. “90% of the women I know work and have children”. I take pride in paying my own way and didn’t want all of the financial pressures to be my husband’s responsibility.”

worked as cabin crew flying around the world where she met her husband. Stopping to look after their, now 13 year old, daughter, whilst her husband completed four separate tours of Afghanistan, Kimberley still managed to balance her commitment to her family and her own progression and development by studying.

Kimberley Morgan

Kimberly currently works as a family support worker in children’s social care. “I love my job and the work that I do and knowing that I can make a difference to children and their family’s lives. Within my role you do see the other, more distressing side to family life” and it is this that motivates Kimberley to want to make a difference.

“We are fortunate enough to have a great family dynamic and that helps us all to achieve our own personal goals.” Kimberley Morgan lives with her husband and their 13-yearold daughter in Berkshire. Kimberly has built her career through strength, hard work and a lot of studying, completing a degree in Childhood and Youth studies and now working towards a masters degree to qualify her as a social worker.

Proud of the military community that she is part of she says that “most of the women I know work in some capacity. The stereotype of an army wife purely gossiping, cooking and cleaning windows just isn’t a thing anymore.”

Kimberley has been independent from a young age. Leaving her home town Manchester at 18 years old and moving to London, she

FREE YOURSELF Why Is RTT* Hypnotherapy The Best Solution For Your Issues?

It’s the nature of the human being to grow and evolve. There’s nothing more frustrating than feeling of being stuck, a feeling of not moving anywhere and observing yourself repeating the same patterns of behavior and situations as if it was indeed a vicious circle with no way out. We’ve all been there: weight that doesn’t drop, addiction that won’t stop, stress that’s always there etc. Why is it so hard? Or is it me that can’t get it right? Many years ago science of psychology discovered that the subconscious mind is the main driving force in our lives. It turned out that 90% of all our behaviors, habits, actions, thoughts and emotions have their core in the subconsciousness. The other poor 10% belongs to the conscious mind. That is the reason that no matter how much you are determined to overcome any issue, if you don’t change what lies beneath it, the issue will stay in your life. Will power can only work temporarily: diets, putting stop to addictions, changing the environment etc. might have an effect and help you for a short period of time, but soon you’ll find yourself in the same old patterns of overeating, smoking, drinking etc. One of the main misinterpretations of the subconscious mind is that people have no access to it. People tend to believe that is out of their reach, out of their control and there’s no way that they can change it. It turns out that’s very far from

the truth. Everything that’s ever happened to you is stored in your subconscious mind and the access to all of it is available to you.

HYPNOSIS State of hypnosis is a state of alpha brainwave and that’s where the door to your subconscious mind opens. Your subconscious mind has all the answers to your questions and it’s more than willing to cooperate with you. This gives you a unique opportunity to change whatever you want to change in its core. Whatever is holding you back in your life can be eliminated with the process of hypnotherapy. It also enables you to improve whatever you wish to improve in your life; hence, many athletes use it because they understand the power of the mind and with hypnosis they are able to improve their results up to 60%. Some people are afraid of losing control in hypnosis. It’s really important to understand that rather of losing control, you are gaining control over your life. Feeling of being hypnotized is very similar to being in a deep meditation. It’s just very relaxing and a person is still aware of their surroundings.

STRESS Stress is the biggest issue in the Western society. It is the common denominator for all issues, mental or physical. Everything starts with some sort of stress and

then it develops into an illness, addiction, anxiety, depression etc. Stress means that the body moves out of balance, it moves into an emergency mode (aka fight/ flight response). If it stays in this state for a longer period of time and on a regular basis the consequences of this will soon start to show. In the modern world stress is most often caused by a thought. Let it be worry, fear or repressed emotion, it is something that an individual feels powerless about. To quote Dr. Joe Dispenza: “It is a scientific fact that the hormones of stress downregulate genes and create diseases, these are long term effects. Human beings, because of the size of neural cortex, we can turn on the stress response just by thought alone. That means then that our thoughts could make us sick.” And as he continues: If our thoughts can make us sick, they can make us well too!

RAPID TRANSFORMATIONAL THERAPY (RTT) The main reason why RTT hypnotherapy is extraordinary effective is because of its ability to change the thought patterns. Hypnosis means that the client moves into the alpha brainwave state. It is the most effective way to rewire the brain and start to create new neuronal pathways in the brain. “Every habit of action is run by a habit of thought.” (Marisa Peer) By changing thought patterns

the client is changing the way they feel which furthermore changes their actions and therefore their events. RTT is without doubt the most efficient and profound school of hypnotherapy. It uses many different techniques (including regression) to really dig deep into the root of the issue and then to transform the meaning that lies beneath it. The person gains the understanding of the issue and is therefore able to move forward with life. At the end of the session client receives a bespoke recording which they listen to for 21 days. That is the duration of time that the brain needs to rewire its neuronal pathway which in other words means picking up a new habit. RTT is a 21 days long process of self-exploring and self-change in which a person gains back the power and control over their life and create the life they want to live. *RTT – Rapid Transformational Therapy Katarina Luksic, Certified RTT Hypnotherapist, Edinburgh

Neighborly UK launches new franchising program to support military veterans settling into civilian life… In celebration of Armed Forces Day 2018 on 30 June, Neighborly, formerly Dwyer Group, one of the world’s largest parent companies of home service brands, launched FranForce in the UK, a new franchising program that offers military veterans and emergency services personnel a new pathway to business ownership and civilian life. FranForce is a Neighborly UK led program to thank the men and women for their service to our country and assist those interested in franchising to make a smooth transition. Financial discounts and a dedicated in-house support team are available to transitional military personnel and current veterans in the UK who want to own a franchise, including 20% off the franchise fee for the initial base territory purchase, as well as special vendor incentives for those that qualify. “We’re proud to provide the opportunity to help transition military personnel and current veterans to become franchisees”, says Jeff Meyers,Vice President of International Operations at Neighborly. “We are very fond of what the military does and the people they turn out as they have a great skill set to translate to franchised businesses - both using leadership skills, hard work and the mindset to follow a proven system. SCARS HIDDEN

Self-harm is something we usually associate with teens and young adults. But it’s not just confined to this generation nor any particular age group or gender. Here we explore self-injury amongst adults, debunk some myths surrounding self-harm and find out how you can help a loved one in this situation…

A

lison* first discovered her partner, Karl* had cut himself when they had been dating for nearly a year. It might sound like an incredibly long time for someone to be close to another human being and not notice something so serious, but this is not uncommon. Karl always used to wear long sleeved tops, you see. And in bed he would keep the lights dimmed or turned off completely. Looking back on it, Alison now realises he went to great lengths, when they first met, to hide his scars and marks. And of course, Alison recalls, the couple were in their late 20s when they first began date - they were both adults and adults don’t selfharm. Or at least that’s what she thought. There are many misconceptions surrounding self-harm, self-injury or self-mutilation (as it can sometimes be called) and the fact it affects mainly teenage girls is one of them. In fact, according to the Mental Health Foundation, the UK has the highest self-harm rate of any country in Europe. It is estimated 30

Just for Her issue 19 2018.indd 30

400 in every 100,000 people self-harm. And while the majority of those who self-harm are aged between 11 and 25 – it can affect anyone, of any age or gender. Alison said: “When I first noticed the scars, it took me quite a while to actually click as to what they were. We were in bed, lazing around one morning and I actually thought they were stretch marks at first. I even made a jokey comment about them.” But, instead of laughing, Karl looked crestfallen and Alison realised her mistake. When they started talking it turned out Karl had been selfharming since he was a teenager. His dad had died when he was very young and as a child he had suffered with anxiety and depression. Harming became his way of masking the pain. Since Alison discovered the marks, the couple have sought help through counselling. But up until that point, when Karl was 29, he had used self-harm as a way to control his emotions. “Karl is not very good at explaining why he self-harmed,” explained Alison. “He is

“He did it because he thought it would make him feel better. It almost made him feel relieved.”

embarrassed about it and the information I got out of him about why he did it is vague. But what I do know is that he did it because he thought it would make him feel better. It almost made him feel relieved.” Indeed, the Mental Health Foundation explains that this is exactly why people self-injure – either through cutting, burning or another form of harm. It says it starts as a way to relieve the build-up of pressure caused by distressing thoughts or feelings. But while there is a ‘relief ’ from this the Foundation said it is temporary and the underlying reason for the person inflicting pain on themselves will remain. There are many different reasons why adults can selfharm. It might be as a result of a trauma, depression, anxiety or low self-esteem. There is also evidence that some veterans or serving members of the armed forces who have suffered with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have self-harmed. Indeed, a veteran’s wife told us how her husband’s PTSD symptoms began with mood swings, which became more frequent and extreme before he began drinking heavily and

getting angry and this all led to him selfharming. Whenever there were any problems, she said, he would cut himself in the chest or stomach. The veteran in question (who wished to remain anonymous) would use self-harming, along with alcohol, to deal with his feelings. But it would not mask these painful emotions for long and would ultimately lead to him feeling guilty. In this particular case the veteran ended up being referred to his GP and eventually managed to seek help from Combat Stress, the veteran’s mental health charity. But what can others with a family member of friend who is self-harming do to help them? According to the Mental Health Foundation, if you are worried, the first step is to speak to your GP or a health professional who will refer you or the person in question for appropriate treatment.

directly or by getting help to deal with the underlying reason for the self-harm – such as PTSD or depression. Treatment offered could include cognitive behavioural therapy or intense psychological therapy. Of course, if the injuries are serious, or you are particularly worried the person who is self-harming has taken an overdose, or drugs or toxic substances the advice from the Mental Health Foundation is to call 999.

If you are reading this, recognise some or any of these symptoms in yourself and don’t want to speak to a friend or family there are many organisations which can help you and which offer free and in some cases 24-hour support: The Samaritans – Call 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org Papyrus (for people under 35) – Call 0800 068 4141 (weekdays 10am to 10pm, weekends 2pm to 10pm and bank holidays 2pm to 5pm). Text – 07786 209697 or email pat@papyrus-uk.org

! s u Join JUST FOR HER BOOK CLUB Have you ever wanted to be part of a book club? Well now is your chance! We have launched the Just For Her Book Club Facebook group, in the hope that we can connect military wives, girlfriends, family and female service personnel together for support, and to have some fun reading and discussing a book each month!

How It Works: 1. Each month we will hold a poll to decide the next month’s book 2. Read the book at your own pace over the course of the month 3. Join in the discussion – we will post the date and time it will take place in the group

Here’s what our group thought of our first read, The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris… “Lale Sokolov is well-dressed, a charmer, a ladies’ man. He is also a Jew. On the first transport from Slovakia to Auschwitz in 1942, Lale immediately stands out to his fellow prisoners. In the camp, he is looked up to, looked out for, and put to work in the privileged position of Tätowierer – the tattooist – to mark his fellow prisoners, forever. One of them is a young woman, Gita, who steals his heart at first glance. His life given new purpose, Lale does his best through the struggle and suffering to use his position for good. Based on a true story.”

Hannah said..

I enjoyed this book, it was an emotive read, as with anything to do with this subject. I did find the writing style made it lack atmosphere in places though, I found myself expecting more from it. Although it’s based on a true story I think it would have worked better as a non-fiction narrative.

I was looking forward to reading the book and I did enjoy it for the most part but felt the quality of writing let it down at the end.

Mandy said.. I loved the book. Even when I wasn’t reading it, it kept popping into my head. I’ve always been interested in this topic so to read it from another point of view was really interesting.

Jo said.. I really liked the book too, it’s a fascinating and emotive subject area, but I felt like there was something missing at times.

If you’d like to join in with the next read, simply search Just For Her Book Club on Facebook and join the group! We’d love to see you there! 32

Happy Post

I

n honour of the new Just for Her Book Club we are bringing back our ‘Happy Post’ project but with a literary twist! It’s very simple: we pair you with a fellow military female and you post them a copy of your favourite book. It could be a new copy or one you’ve already read, hardback or paperback, fiction or non fiction. Perhaps there is a book that made you laugh out loud or that left your head spinning with a dramatic twist. You could even write a little message inside to explain your choice. You then pop it in the post and feel great in the knowledge that you will brighten up someone’s day and maybe introduce them to a new genre. And if that isn’t enough, you then have the excitement of waiting to receive your own book!

COSTS It is completely up to you whether you buy a new copy of your chosen book or send your own copy. It’s fine if it’s well thumbed, it shows it’s been loved, but please make sure it’s legible and there are no pages missing! Please bear in mind that the bigger the book, the more the postage will cost and feel free to send it first or second class. International prices are obviously higher so do let us know if you would only like to be matched with a UK resident.

LOST FOUND Do you ever feel like you have lost your true identity? Photo: Charlie Jackson

FEELING LOST…

Feeling lost shows you are not sure who you are any more. When you are NOT being a mum, a wife, a partner, a carer, a dog walker, and a support system for a familyon-the-move…who are you? Think about the roles YOU play each day that make up the main part of your IDENTITY. Each of us has many roles that define our lives yet still many of us feel lost at times. Sometimes we are just bogged down by people or tasks that require something from us. We can get lost underneath a big pile of to-do’s and responsibilities keeping us so busy; we never have time to honour our own true desires. Other times we feel lost in our career, relationship or generally in life. It can be difficult to remember who we were before LIFE happened. Almost as if someone pressed a button and we were sent spiraling ever faster away from our original hopes and dreams.

DISTRACTIONS…

Being busy might feel good, after all nobody wants too much time to dwell on what’s missing from their life. It’s important though, at some point, to step out from hiding behind this busyness and challenge yourself by asking WHAT ELSE IS THERE? And apart from my usual roles…WHO AM I?

ONLY YOU CAN DO THIS…

You may feel that absent loved ones, friends and family make you feel less lost and things feel good when they are with you. Nobody else can fill this particular gap for you though. Only you can do this.

FINDING YOURSELF… How to get started:

STEP 1: YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Know that you are not the only one feeling this way! Take the time to ask a few people around you if they have ever felt lost in their lives or unclear about whom they really are. I have yet to come across someone who has never felt lost at some point in their life. Take heart by sharing your stories; give each other hope and inspiration whilst deepening your friendship.

What did you do to help yourself? Ask yourself how this situation turned out, what did you learn from it and which strengths and skills did you need to draw on?

If you want to take this further… and continue to work on FINDING YOURSELF, here is an insight into the next steps I use with my clients:

Working with another person or a group can be really helpful here, as it is easier to draw out strengths for someone else than it is for yourself. Use a list like the one on the resources page of my website, a list of Personal Strengths Examples www.indrajackson.com to help and inspire you.

Together we look at:

When you look at the long list you have come up with together, you will feel empowered, more confident about who you are and READY to start finding your own unique way forward. When you connect with the REAL you (aka your higher self or authentic self) it’s like finding the missing link in the form of a best friend who has YOUR wellbeing at the top of their agenda, and like a new source of warmth, energy and security. This person KNOWS & RESPECTS your true purpose, strengths AND weaknesses, your passions AND fears, your desires and dreams, your thoughts and feelings, what you loved as a child and what your needs are. “Thank you Indra you have enabled me to find my authentic self again!” “When I contacted Indra I was in a place where I felt lost and my Mojo had disappeared too. After just a few sessions with Indra I felt a shift in my focus and direction. Indra has a very gentle… and effective way of transforming your perspective. The sessions were fun, at the same time raising my awareness of where I am now to where I want to be. I felt completely safe with Indra guiding me. I am fulfilling my career path again I feel motivated and purposeful. I have got back in touch with ‘me’ and feel more clarity around my roles as mother, friend, wife and my working life. My family can see that I’m driven again and focused. I have my mojo back!” F.D. August 2017

• Updating your values and what’s MOST important to you in your life now •Identifying any unhelpful beliefs you have about yourself and changing your thinking patterns using NLP • Eliminating negative emotions which may be holding you back and managing your emotions using TFT • Re-discovering your childlike wonder, curiosity, and your hopes & dreams • Using imagery and vision boards to re-connect with your higher self • Setting goals and making a plan of action to incorporate your journey of re-discovery into your busy life

How this works:

I offer one to one coaching sessions at my home in Bucks for local clients. For those clients that are not local I offer guided coaching via Skype, Zoom or WhatsApp which is a very effective way to work together. I also regularly give talks and run workshops covering a variety of topics and techniques. Details of my latest LOST & FOUND Workshop are shown below To contact me: 07976 572544 or indra@indrajackson.com To find out about upcoming workshops and talks (including a free talk at RAF Halton Hive in Wendover BUCKS on 13th November) visit my website: www.indrajackson.com

STEP 2: FEELING LOST IS GOOD Don’t worry - feeling lost is good. This is what makes you ask the bigger questions, seek answers from new places. This is how you grow rich in your life in a deeper and more meaningful way. Use your situation to your advantage, as a springboard to explore new things, venture further. This is the way to find your true purpose and a deeper sense of fulfilment.

STEP 3: WHEN ELSE HAS THIS HAPPENED? Think back in your life - when else have you felt lost?

New Service to help the Emotional Wellbeing of Military Families… Sheffield Mind is offering counselling to relatives of serving personnel and reservists… Sheffield Mind has been awarded 3-years funding from the Ministry of Defence Covenant Fund, to provide counselling to military families in South Yorkshire. The local mental health charity offers talking therapies to parents, siblings, partners and other family members over the age of 18, who have been affected by their relative serving in the armed forces. They are also starting a support group for family members to meet others in a similar situation, later this year. Sheffield Mind CEO, Margaret Lewis, said “Keeping Families in Mind provides counselling for a variety of practical and emotional issues that have been caused, or made worse, by the connection with military life. For example, a parent may be experiencing severe anxiety about their son or daughter being on active service, a partner may be experiencing isolation or they may have got into debt. Our trained counsellors are able to respond quickly, to offer support and a safe space to talk things through, so that family life isn’t even more disrupted. In developing the service, we were helped by many organisations and individuals in South Yorkshire, including Cllr Tony Damms and Fayzeh Mohammed from the Armed Forces Covenant Board and Retired Major Charlie Helmns from the Yorkshire Regiment, British Army, all of whom were keen to see a service of this type available in the city.

We’re looking forward to developing these links, in order to ensure we reach as many military families in the region as we can”. Keeping Families in Mind launched in the summer and full details of the service are available on the Sheffield Mind website. www. sheffieldmind.co.uk

Keeping Families in Mind… Do you have a relative who is serving in the armed forces? Are you worried about their safety? Struggling to cope on your own? Do you want to talk to someone in confidence? We’re here for you. We’re offering an innovative new service, aimed at providing therapeutic support to the families of serving military personnel. You might want to talk about stressful events arising from deployment, the uncertainty when they’re away, or the challenges that can arise when they return home. We know that family life carries on regardless and that this can bring its own stresses and challenges. We can support here too, providing independent advice and an opportunity to talk openly about the extraordinary pressures of life in and around the military.

PAIN

Pain, in its most benign form, warns us that something isn’t right. It might stem from a grazed knee, a finger touching the hot stove, or a dull throb in your head after a stressful day. For the most part, this type of pain is acute and the effects of it are short lived. It is easily treated with a bit of time, some over the counter painkillers and some rest. But what about when pain lasts for a much longer period of time, with no sure-fire way to fix what is causing it?

I

t is now estimated that almost half of all adults in the UK deal with chronic pain of some sort on a day to day basis. Researchers from Imperial College London, Arthritis Research UK and the University of Aberdeen used data from 19 studies that included almost 140,000 adults. They extrapolated the results to come up with the estimate that around 43% of people in the UK experience chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts for longer than 3 months. At its worst, chronic pain robs us of our productivity, our well-being, and for many of us suffering from extended illness, our very lives. Current advice for chronic pain is to use a combination of physical exercise and painkillers to get some relief, and in some cases psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, can also help people cope with quality of life issues. Whilst chronic pain can certainly stem from life threatening and terminal illnesses, it is not usually the case. The most common condition for chronic pain is lower back pain, followed by arthritis, migraines, MS, fibromyalgia and nerve pain. Treating underlying conditions is vitally important, but often doesn’t entirely resolve the pain and increasingly, doctors are now considering chronic pain a condition of its own. In 2010 Emma was diagnosed with cluster headaches. The symptoms of cluster headaches are characterised by unilateral pain, although for some people the side can 40

to 3 hours, although most people report them lasting about 45-90 minutes. During a bout, attacks may happen every other day or up to eight times per day. Bouts can follow one of two main patterns: episodic or chronic. Episodic cluster headaches are the most common type, affecting about nine out of 10 people who have them. With this type, bouts last on average between two and 12 weeks – although, they could range from anything between one week and one year. When a bout is over, the headaches stop for at least a month. People with episodic cluster headaches may not have headaches for months or even years after a bout, but unfortunately after a period of time with no headaches, they start again. The second pattern is chronic cluster headaches. With this type, patients may have no break or only a short break between bouts. Doctors define chronic cluster headaches as bouts lasting for at least a year, with less than a month’s break between them.

26/09/2018 10:34

The first doctor that Emma saw told her it was probably was just a migraine, and sent her home with instructions to take paracetamol if it started again but to come back if it didn’t help. But when another attack happened again just a few days later, Emma’s husband rushed her back to A&E. This time the pain lasted much longer Emma was unable to sit still, could not keep quiet during the attack and all she could do was pace the floors and hit the side of her head with her fist. “I know it sounds bizarre but when I’m having an attack hitting myself where the pain is makes me feel more in control of it. It doesn’t relieve anything, it’s more of just a coping mechanism. I look like an absolute mad woman if it happens when I am out - not that I venture far from the house very often anymore. At its worst I have attacks every few hours, every day. I’m terrified of being out when I have an attack. It’s put a lot of strain on me and my husband’s relationship. We rarely go out together. Certain food and smells trigger my headaches off so I don’t like going to restaurants anymore, and I’m afraid to go out of the country on holidays. I’ve lost friends because of the condition, missed birthdays, weddings, and nights out as I have completely isolated myself over the last 5 years. I left my job as a carer three years ago which I miss, because I physically couldn’t work anymore and rang in sick constantly.” After the second trip to A&E, Emma was discharged with an urgent referral to a neurologist. “I consider myself lucky really as many people that have cluster headaches, with it being such a rare disease, don’t get the help they need as quickly as I did. I was referred to a wonderful consultant in Oxford who thankfully knew a lot about the condition and knew the best place to start to try and help. There is no cure for cluster headaches but there are things to try and help keep the attacks to a minimum. I’m on two different types of medication, one is prevantative and the other I take as soon as an attack starts. I still suffer attacks almost daily but I have noticed the periods between bouts are getting longer. At the beginning of this year I went almost a month without one - it was bliss. The biggest help for me has been breathing in pure oxygen when an attack starts. I carry a tank around with me wherever I go, I wont even nip to the corner shop down my street without it. The oxygen works some of the time to stop an attack, but not always. It has certainly made my life more bearable and has given me some of my hope, independence and freedom back. 41 continues over page >>

pain. The last year for me has been better. I’m hoping to try and start working from home to give myself something to focus on. I’ve also joined support groups for cluster headaches on Facebook and want to get more involved in charity work to raise awareness of the condition and help others that are living with it. Chronic pain is an awful thing to have to live with, but with the help of my counsellor and my family I’m slowly getting there in accepting that this is the hand that I’ve been dealt and there are lots of reasons to carry on pushing through all of the bad patches to enjoy the good stuff that life has to offer.”

“Three years into my diagnosis things were at an all time low, I attempted suicide by overdosing because I felt like I couldn’t cope anymore and just couldn’t live like this. I’m so thankful that I pulled through and have since started having therapy to try and deal with the depression and anxiety that has stemmed from living with chronic

“I think in a lot of ways the mental health effects of having a condition like this are the worst part. The pain is horrendous, but the best way I can describe it as a whole is that it’s like being in an abusive relationship with your own body but there’s absolutely no way to escape. It’s knowing that another attack will happen again later that day or the next day, and just constantly waiting for it to happen. It’s also such a rare disease that lots of people you talk to about it are unaware that it exists and as soon as you say ‘headache’ they dismiss it as something that isn’t so bad, think you’re making a big deal over nothing or talk about their cures for migraines. It’s hard for people to understand just how debilitating the condition is.

I’d had a lot gone on in my life and had frequent panic attacks before seeing Trudy. My anxiety had caused depression as well. It was just so tiring being ‘me’. Had it not been for my kids and Trudy’s guidance I strongly feel I would’ve been one of life’s statistics. I knew I couldn’t carry on like this and had to change my life. Trudy taught me how to love myself again; She gave me techniques to manage all my negative thoughts and constant worrying. She showed me how to take back control from ‘the voice’ that was in my head creating all these bad feelings. I believe everyone’s head has this voice but it’s whether you control ‘it’ or ‘it’ controls you is what’s important. With Trudy’s amazing help I am now completely in control of ‘the voice’ and I now DBS checked and fully insured to live my life how I want. Pin-tested! For this issue’s Pintested we’ve decided to try out some of our favourite festive pins! Over the last few years I must have pinned hundreds of Christmas gift ideas and crafts, but in the lead up to Christmas when everything becomes such a big rush I never end up making any of them!

Christmas Special

This year I’ve been much better organised and have gotten into the festive spirit early, and I’m pretty pleased with the results of everything!

FAMILY FINGERPRINT REINDEER CHRISTMAS CARDS We had SO much fun making these as a family. We stuck some Christmas tunes on, got out the finger paint and all took turns creating our prints before I turned them all into reindeer.

SANTA’S SLEIGH CHOCOLATE GIFT Far more interesting than a selection box, if not a little pricier, but I think it’s worth the extra cost when you can pick and choose the chocolates you’re using to suit who it is for!

It’s so easy to put it all together using double sided sticky tape. I’ve made them for all the kids I know this year and can’t wait to put one on my childrens’ bedside tables for when they wake up on Christmas morning!

Pintested score: 10/10 48

I love how personalised they are and how everyone could get involved, but they did take up quite a bit of time so it’s definitely something to set aside an afternoon for or to do over a few days. I ended up making 12 cards and it took a good few hours, it’s probably not the best idea if you want a stack of cards to give out to everybody you know but making a few sweet cards for special people was fun!

POM POM PINE CONE DECORATIONS Every year we buy a new decoration for our tree and I love getting them all out each December and remembering where we got each one. This year we decided to make some simple but cute pom pom decorations ourselves using pine cones that we’ve collected over the last year. I like how they’ve turned out but they only get 9/10 because it did take far longer than I thought it would and you need LOADS of pom poms which wasn’t made very clear on the Pinterest link I was looking at - we ran out and had to take an emergency trip to hobbycraft! By the time we got back the kids had lost interest and I was the one spending the afternoon gluing miniature pom poms on, which got boring quite fast! I think they will look great on the tree though.

CHRISTMAS TREE BROWNIES These brownies looked lovely on Pinterest and relatively simple to make. I used a Betty Crocker Fudge Brownie mix, a tube of green icing, red smarties and bits of KitKat for the tree trunks. They may lack finesse and certainly wouldn’t win any awards but I think they would be perfect for a bake sale donation or just to enjoy at home. Although mine didn’t look exactly like the ones I’d pinned, they tasted lovely and were a big hit with my children so I would definitely recommend giving them a go! The possibilities are endless in terms of decorating and obviously, for any bakers out there, you could make the brownies from scratch.

MacramĂŠ MacramĂŠ is the ancient craft of knotting string in patterns to create decorative wall hangings, plant holders and even lampshades!

26/09/2018 10:34

When you start, you need to cut your cord into equal lengths. It’s a good idea to work with an even number of lengths to keep your pattern even, but it’s also quite easy to add and remove ropes as you go along too so don’t worry too much about it when you begin. When you cut your lengths bear in mind that each individual rope will create two ropes when you attach it to the wood.

W

hile several ancient cultures had knot tying techniques and art forms, the form of Macramé we use today has its origins in ancient China. The word Macramé is Arabic in origin, and means ‘fringe’. It’s all the rage on Pinterest at the moment and is playing a big part in the Hygge interior style craze, with its soft textures and natural materials. To create your own Macramé wall hanging all you will need is a stick, piece of driftwood or a dowel (the length depends on how large a design you wish to do) and some Macramé craft string. For our design we have used Macramé Craft Cord 6mm, from amazon. co.uk. Macramé is super versatile and once you get the hang of it it’s easy to come up with your own patterns or modify others to suit you.

To get you started on your own design here are 6 simple knots and some photos to inspire you! You can add crystals, beads, feathers or faux flowers to your designs too, or even dip dye them to give them a funky edge!

L

iving with Uncertainty

A few weeks ago when I was about to start writing this article, I had one of those freak accidents, where virtually nothing happens but it has a huge impact on your life. Briefly, I “fell off” a pavement and broke my wrist; then two weeks after breaking it I had surgery to have a plate fitted to hold everything together. All the plans I had for the next two months had to be cancelled.

You might wonder why I am telling you this. In the five weeks since the accident I have had a lot of time to reflect on how our lives can change in an instant. Perhaps this is something you have already experienced or maybe the thought of it sits very quietly in the back of your mind when your ‘other half’ disappears to the other side of the world and news is patchy at best or non-existent at worst. Life becomes very uncertain. I’m curious how you cope with uncertainty. I believe that women [in particular] have a need for certainty in their lives, [especially when it comes to relationships], whereas men seem to handle it much better. Uncertainty pushes our buttons and drives our behaviours; it can change how we feel about ourselves and how we see our place in the world. I would go so far as to say it can change our self image. Because of course our self image is being shaped and moulded every day. It’s true that by the time we are 10 or 11, our self image has already been well crafted by how we responded as children to criticism and other people’s opinions of us, which of course were usually those of our family. And then, as we become a teenager, our self image is driven by how much self esteem we have.

stressful situations. Some are big, others are small and seemingly insignificant. In either scenario these events arrive in your life as a “fact”. How you cope or how you react will be 100% based on your conditioning which is based on your experiences. Unfortunately, conditioning becomes hard wired and habitual so it becomes increasingly hard to recognise that you have lost the ability to see that you have choices. You allocate a meaning to the situation, based on your past, which then becomes your default position. If you recognise any of this in yourself, congratulations. You can award yourself 3A’s: Awareness, Acceptance and the third one is Action.

Marian Bourne

BSc (Hons), CK, CST, AMC, C.Hyp. The Bourne Practice 020 8542 7907 07703 608607 www.thebournepractice.co.uk www.marianbourne.com

In case you doubt this, it’s useful to think about the fact that every day your self-esteem can be challenged - by what you read, what you see, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Newspapers, Movies, Television, Smart phones, iPads; we live in a 24/7 sea of subliminal information and images. It’s been scientifically proven, that it’s the subliminal messages that seem to slide into our subconscious and have the most impact rather than the explicit information we receive. We know this is true because Nike, Virgin, Coca-Cola, big as they are, still continue to spend a lot of money on subliminal advertising campaigns.

You can take action and make a difference to your life by doing three things:

1

Before you make a decision when the next stressful situation happens, breathe! Stress raises your cortisol levels and closes down your rational brain. Take three deep breaths, from your belly not your chest and then check in with yourself as to how you’re feeling.

2

Whatever the feelings are in a stressful situation they will always be there because of a thought. It’s not easy, but ask yourself how far back in your life does this thought go? How far back is the origin of this thought? Once you know where it comes from you have a choice. Nine times out of 10, you will see that it is an old pattern from childhood and once you see this you can choose whether the thought truly serves you today and if you want to hold onto it.

3

Believe it or not, we choose our thoughts. They are like flowers or weeds in the garden. We can choose to water the flowers so they flourish and thrive or we can let the weeds die by not looking after them.

So what happens to your self-image in this world of such powerful subliminal messages? And how does it link to living with uncertainty?

Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left make a list of all your negative thoughts. Are they true? Do you want to nourish them?

I believe we have a new ‘disease’ - I call it Comparisonitis. We compare ourselves to people we will never meet and lifestyles we will never live.

In the right-hand column write down a positive thought that counteracts it. The more you feed your mind with positive thoughts, the better you feel about yourself.

I ask this question because the self image you have of yourself can either limit or expand your horizons of what you can achieve.

To finish here is a secret I want to share with you and one that I share with all my coaching clients.

Your answer to how you see yourself and how you live with uncertainty will be influenced by your experiences as a child and everything that has happened to you since. It’s your “history” and it is all held in your subconscious; you could think of it as a bank vault, well hidden, well protected and only accessed when circumstances require an old memory to be brought to the surface.

Your mind cannot hold conflicting thoughts and it works on just three things:

Here’s how it works. Throughout your life you are faced with challenges, let’s call them

If you have any questions please feel free to email me marian@thebournepractice.co.uk

1. Your mind works on the pictures you give it 2. Your mind works on the words it hears 3. Your mind works on the pictures it creates from the words that it hears.

Release the Elephant in the Room

to Discover Your True Self.

S

ometimes self-harm leaves no physical scars. It provides no pleasure, pain, or punishment. It gives no relief and delivers no obvious feelings. Sometimes we become so bored, or worn down, by tedious daily routines and the demands of those around us, that it seems there’s nothing to look forward to. Maybe there is something inside that’s simply given up on creating a more joyful, successful future. Instead of “seizing the day”, we become resigned to a lifetime of the same old routines and patterns that ensures the future looks pretty much the same as the past and present. Sometimes self-harm is simply too clever for us, creeping up in stealth-mode. It is cunning, secretive – invisible.

looked in the mirror, I simply realised that I could not see ME! The person I thought I was had become invisible.

My story involves a relatively normal childhood, a good education, a marriage, a child, a divorce and a 25-year international corporate career. Nothing truly out of the ordinary in this day and age and of course I was strong, resilient and bounced back from whatever life threw at me. One day, however, as I

I realised that the slow, creeping suppression of what made me unique was in fact a whole new and unexplored dimension of self-harm. It would be all too easy to apportion blame on the players that appear in my life story, but I recognise now that I always had the power to choose – I just didn’t know it at the time. It was me that allowed my individuality to be eroded as I attempted to fit in. It was me who didn’t stay true to myself. Only I can take the blame for not following my own intuition and consequently not doing what I was meant to do and as a result the loss of my impact and influence. This, I realised was the Elephant in the room. I was the one that couldn’t or wouldn’t see what I had become and the real me was hiding in plain sight.

Instead, I saw in the mirror, an old woman, a shadow staring back at me – a dull, lifeless, grey shadow that was no more than a ghostly image of what I once was. Where was that carefree child with unlimited dreams? Where was the idealistic young woman, the girl who would change lives and change the world? How had she allowed the life to be sucked out of her? Why had she given in to other people, gone along with what they wanted, not spoken up for herself? When had she started simply to fit in? When did she lose her voice? When had she hidden her authentic self?

Sometimes what is required is to stop for a moment, take a long hard look at ourselves from the inside out and ask some difficult questions.

These are the kind of questions we usually avoid – often not even acknowledging that they exist in the first place. Instead, we probably put on a mask or two - people do not see who we really are, only what we choose to let them see. That’s our coping mechanism and we are often very good at hiding what’s really going on. Everything gets internalised and my view is that this is often what causes us to become ill, fatigued, or simply even more stressed. To acknowledge the elephant in the room is to take the first step in creating a new future. A future that is different in whatever way, from the future we are looking at today. Most people I talk to, have at some time asked themselves – Is this all there is? Is this it? Many have told me they feel their life is standing still, or they are treading water and others say they no longer know who they are anymore. This is the modern world of stress and overwhelm. With me, the realisation came after leaving the corporate world and literally being knocked on my backside by an accident that left me on crutches, housebound - unable to drive and contemplating “Why Me”? But also, after the pity fest was over What next? What is my purpose? I suddenly understood that the most important relationship we have is with ourselves. It is the only one where we are present our entire life, from the moment of birth to the moment of death. Why do we not give ourselves the attention we deserve? I was introduced to Angelic Reiki by way of healing my physical

injury, but I experienced something so profound, spiritual and multidimensional I knew that I had to explore this path. I soon embarked on a healing and spiritual journey embracing, Angelic Reiki (Master and Teacher), Rahanni and Shamanisim. I also decided it was time to take my coaching skills to another level becoming an accredited (IIC&M) Master Coach. No longer do I travel on the road to fear, I have embraced a new route – the road to LOVE. I continue to learn, teach and evolve as this path opens ever new and exciting possibilities to explore. Now, I work with people who have become lost in their own lives; sometimes the realisation is triggered by a traumatic event - divorce, bereavement, the loss of a job. It may be reaching a certain age, empty nest syndrome, or a dawning realisation that there is more to life and it’s time to start living it again. Some people are simply exhausted – in need of an energy boost. My journey to become Totally ME has become the roadmap to “Totally YOU.” Whether, single healing sessions, one to one coaching, or a combination of sessions I develop tailored, bespoke packages that focus on each person’s specific needs. Acknowledging the elephant is merely the first step in reclaiming your own unique journey.

A mind-body therapy based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. It works on a system of channels which circulate energy around the body and which are most accessible at various points called acupressure points. Any physical or emotional condition can be helped to correct by gentle manipulation of these points and channels. Shiatsu also has a very pleasant and relaxing effect on body and mind. In my sessions I can combine shiatsu therapy with counselling which most clients find a very effective way to deal with both physical and emotional problems in one session. FORAGING for

Nature’s Gifts

By Claire Macnaughton

F

oraging for food is an ancient art. Born of a slow and elegant past of feeding and sustaining ourselves from the land. The benefits reach far beyond simply putting food on the table. The very act of foraging for wild edible plants can be transformative and rewarding. For some, collecting and eating the riches of the woodlands and hedgerows has been part of life since childhood. For others, gathering wild food is a new experience. Hedgerows and woodlands can be great places to forage for free food. There is a range of edible species ready to be transformed into jams, gins and more.

Enjoy an October stomp and reap the benefits… Early autumn is peak foraging. It’s when hedgerows and trees are laden with the jewel-like colours of ripening fruits and nuts. Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) Blackberrying is probably the one traditional foraging activity that’s still widely enjoyed today. Picking blackberries, the fruit of bramble, is a pastime enjoyed across the generations and is a great family pursuit. Can be used for: blackberries have a high vitamin C content and can be eaten raw or cooked. There are hundreds of micro species with subtly different flavours.

66

Just for Her issue 19 2018.indd 66

Great to bake with: blackberry loaf, crumble or pie. Add into vodka with sugar and rest until Christmas or simply jam or compote. Seek out: this unmistakable, prickly shrub grows in woods, hedges, heathland and wasteland almost everywhere. Pick the berries when they’re a deep purple-black from late July and throughout autumn. Rosehip (Rosa canina) Commonly found in hedgerows Rose hips are the red and orange seed pods of rose plants. Can be used for: the hips have a fleshy covering that contains the hairy seeds (the irritant hairs were traditionally used by schoolboys to make itching powder). The outside is packed with vitamin C and they are well known for helping stave off winter colds. They are good for jellies, jams and can be used to make a lightly infused rosehip syrup for cordial or pouring onto ice cream or pancakes. Seek out: look for bright red rosehips from September to November along hedgerows and woodland edges. Cut, or carefully pull, the hips close to the base of each pod (to avoid being attacked by prickly thorns).

Sloes (Prunus spinosa) The blackthorn is best known for its crop of tart, acidic fruits used to make the deepred, wintry drink, sloe gin. Can be used for: the general rule is to pick after the first frost as it softens the skins and helps to release the juices. However, you can pick them early and freeze at home instead and prick them with a pin, or if you are like me, put them in a freezer bag and whack them with a rolling pin. Make sloe gin or try using sloes for whisky, jams and vinegar. Seek out: the blue-black berries are ready for picking from the end of September to December. In some years, blackthorn trees along hedgerows and fields are heavy with fruit. Bullace (Prunus domestica) On a good year, bullace fruits can literally weigh down the hedgerow. Can be used for: the fruits are similar to the small damson, and like the damson are a type of plum and can be used to make crumbles, jams and preserves, fruit wine and to make fruit liqueurs (like sloe gin). Seek out: small, oval fruits can vary in colour but are usually blue, purple or black. They tend to taste acidic until they’re ripe. This is a great late season fruit as it ripens up to six weeks later than many others from October to November.

to stop them from exploding. Once cooked and peeled they can be eaten as they are or used in desserts and stuffings. You can also candy them, puree them or store them in syrup. What to look for: you’ll find the best crop at the foot of large established trees. Trees start dropping nuts from October and into late autumn and early winter. Walnut (Juglans regia) Walnut trees, like the Sweet Chestnut, were also first introduced to the UK by the Romans. Can be used for: crack open the shells to get to the nut. Watch out though because there is a reason Walnuts are used to stain furniture. When peeling, gloves are advised unless you want to look like your hands have experienced a fake tan disaster. They can be eaten raw (when they’re ‘wet’), dried or pickled. Dried nuts can be stored for around a year. They can be added to both sweet and savoury dishes. Add spinach, garlic, extra virgin olive oil and blend dried walnuts to make a great pesto. Season with crunchy Himalayan salt. Seek out: trees can be found throughout the UK often in large gardens and parks. The nuts are covered with a green, fleshy husk that starts to split as it ripens. Pick them in late autumn and early winter.

Clare Macnaughton blogs at amodernmilitarymother.com Her book ‘I Hate Housework’ is available on Amazon

Hazelnut (Corylus avellana) A common tree in woods, hedgerows and gardens, it bears its crop of nuts (also called cobnuts and filberts) from late August.

when they’re still young and green in late August to mid-September. Most ripe nuts are found in September and October, depending on the weather.

Can be used for: if you gather the hazelnuts early in the season, when they’re still green, the shelled nuts make a tasty nibble to munch on while you’re out walking. If you collect enough, the shelled nuts can be roasted in the oven or used to make hazelnut butter.

A December hike can unearth delights…

Seek out: it’s advisable to collect hazelnuts

Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) Popular pickings, and a Christmas classic, Sweet Chestnut trees are not native to the UK and were introduced by the Romans.

The legality of foraging is reasonably simple – if the item is being grown as a crop, then it’s not foraging, it’s scrumping (or stealing!). It’s highly unlikely that cob nuts or blackberries growing in a field hedge are intended as a food crop, however, the nuts and sloes in a person’s garden hedge will be! Therefore, if someone’s caring for a tree or a hedge, it’s in an orchard or garden or looks intentionally planted, tread with care! That said, there at lots of edible crops grown incidentally on trees planted ornamentally, on streets and in council amenity spaces, particularly in urban areas – foraging doesn’t have to be just a country pursuit! – look out for apples, plums and cherries, too!

Can be used for: the nuts can be baked, roasted, boiled or microwaved. Don’t forget to score a cross in them 67

What is Laser Acupuncture? Leilani Lea B.Ac, Lic.Ac, MTAS, MFEMTC.

Laser Acupuncture is a new and exciting therapy. It combines the ancient science of Acupuncture with a new, ground-breaking low-level laser therapy (LLLT), which is near-infrared light energy. Combined together, the effects of both therapies are increased, resulting in speedy and often astonishing results in treating a range of health conditions. Acupuncture is very effective, but this is like turbocharged acupuncture, and the results are in another league. It’s a new technique with a tremendous range of applications, but there are very few trained practitioners in the UK.

The healing effects of light; it’s called Photobiomodulation The healing effects of light have been understood for millennia and lasers of all descriptions are now widely used in modern medicine. The near-infrared wavelengths are found in the spectrum of light emitted by the sun and they are bio-active, which means that they directly affect the functioning of our cells. We all know how we feel better lifting our faces to the warmth of the sun – and think of photosynthesis in plants – it’s a similar process, due to our cells being ‘photosensitive’ – the cells know how to respond to and use light. Near-infrared light penetrates the cells to activate the mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cells that produce ATP energy. This energy in turn fuels every thought we think and every move we make; every part of our functioning body/mind. More than 200 clinical trials & 3,000 laboratory studies of LLLT have been published in recent years which show the results it can achieve; reduced pain and inflammation, improved healing of wounds, bone fractures, tissues and nerves, increased production of healthy new stem cells. It can even regenerate neural pathways. Its effects include an increase in energy, improved muscle recovery and athletic performance,

improved metabolism, improved mood and cognitive functioning, reduction of anxiety, improved weight loss, improved sleep. Laser (LLLT) is applied via a small handheld device. As the treatment is quick and not painful, it is ideal for the needle-shy and for children.

A bit about me I have over 40 years of experience as an Acupuncturist, working internationally & treating thousands of patients. During that time I’ve developed a number of unique treatments which combine acupuncture points for proven results. Now that I’m using LLLT in addition to acupuncture, I’ve seen a marked reduction in the number of treatments needed to achieve the same results. It is extraordinary to use the laser directly on powerful acupoints and combine the benefits of both therapies. The conditions I’ve successfully treated time and again include high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis, IBS, back & neck pain, joint pain, chronic pain, migraines, anxiety, depression, and CFS/ME, to name a few. I also have experience in working with the forces. In Shropshire, I treated service personnel from RAF Shawbury, most commonly for chronic pain, air sickness and IBS. The MO was so impressed with the results that I started seeing service personnel regularly. It was an honour to serve them and a very rewarding time in my career. Through such experiences, I’ve become a real advocate for the simple and powerful effects of acupuncture. After working in India, where healthcare is scarce and reliance on drugs is unsustainable, I founded a charity to take acupuncture to the developing world. We travel to remote regions of India and Nepal to train local people in the basics of acupuncture. They then establish free clinics for their communities; providing free healthcare and successfully treating the most common health problems.

Specialist interests My special interest has always been in neurology, which is the area of health that includes the brain, spine and nervous system. My interest was sparked by working with 20 young children in India who were suffering polio paralysis. In a matter of weeks, using Acupuncture, I was able to regenerate nerve pathways and see the children walk for the first time in years. I’ve also had similar results for post-stroke paralysis. Low level laser therapy brings additional benefits when treating the brain. I’ve treated traumatic brain injury, autisticspectrum children, anxiety and depression as well as post-stroke paralysis - with very encouraging results. I recently worked with a left-handed young woman who had a bleed in the brain from an aneurism. Luckily she came to me only 6 weeks later which meant that I could reverse the damage caused in a matter of weeks. This applies to all strokes; the sooner we begin treatment, the better the results. The patient’s left hand and arm were completely paralysed, without any ability to control or move her arm, hand or fingers. Gradually, after a few treatments, she could start to use her hand again, then lift her arm and gradually unfold her fingers. It took only 8 weeks for her to regain movement and control; flexing and then extending her fingers into perfect stars. She’ll get full use of her writing hand back again. Her cognitive skills and her confidence improved too. That is the astonishing power of Laser Acupuncture.

Find out more Leilani practices at the Milsom Street Clinic in Bath and carries out home visits for patients in the local area. She offers a free 15 minute consultation for all new patients. Intensive treatment courses available. Find out more at www.acupuncture-athome.co.uk

CITIES A TO Z

Perth Embrace the best of both worlds in Perth, where soft-sand beaches and scenic parks meet a thriving metropolis of small bars, creative restaurants and curated street art.

T

he capital of Western Australia, Perth, is hip and sunny. It’s set on the gorgeously warm Indian Ocean and mixes golden beaches and parks with skyscrapers and colonial architecture. This makes holidays to Perth the perfect blend of relaxation and entertainment, with so much more to do in close proximity to the city centre.

With a total of 19 stunning beaches, you could spend an entire holiday here just chilling on the sand. There are many things to do in Perth, and one is making the most of the coast. Surfers and sailboarders should head for Scarborough Beach on the Ocean Coast, while a more relaxed vibe awaits at the trendy beachfront eateries of Cottesloe Beach. We all know wine doesn’t get much better than Australian, and a fantastic activity for couples to enjoy is a visit to one - or more - of the 40 vineyards northeast of Perth. This spot is Western Australia’s oldest wine region, so enjoy sipping locally produced tipple or cycling through the scenic vineyards.

Perhaps the best known wine region in this area though is Margaret River, South of Perth. This is where you can really indulge in all your favourite pastimes and passions. Divide your time between numerous award-winning restaurants and wineries before imbibing even more of your senses with stunning beaches and surfing opportunities, tall-timber forests rising spectacularly out of the earth and impressive, ancient caves. Fremantle, or Freo as the locals call it, is located 19 kilometres to the southwest of Perth and situated at the mouth of the Swan River on Australia’s west coast. Named after Captain Charles Fremantle who set up camp on the site in the 1800s, the city is renowned for its colonial architecture, including Fremantle Prison and the Old Courthouse. Try the craft brews on tap at the landmark heritage pubbrewery, The Sail & Anchor, located along a section of South Terrace known as the Cappuccino Strip. This area is also home to the Fremantle Markets, open Friday to Sunday. At Fremantle Prison YHA, bunk

Kings Park bridge decide to base yourself downtown or prefer one of Perth’s hip neighbourhoods, there are plenty of inviting hotels to choose from. Perth is surrounded by compelling destinations that make great day trips. Whether it’s tasting your way through Western Australia’s oldest wine growing region, seeing the ancient desert sculptures of the Pinnacles, or kicking back on idyllic Rottnest Island, the only hard decision is where to go first.

Kings Park is one of the biggest city parks in the world – bigger than Central Park in New York City – yet it’s right in the heart of Perth. It grants epic views of the Swan and Canning rivers and the skyscrapers perched on their banks. Astonishingly tall, white-trunked trees line the entrance road to this inspiring patch of green, which has a treetop bridge, bushland trails, manicured gardens and cafés. When it comes to finding somewhere to stay, Perth’s hotels include some of the best in the country. With styles ranging from luxurious heritage properties to stylish make-yourself-at-home havens there is something to suit everyone. Whether you

The vast Avon Valley, a one to two hour drive from Perth, covers seven localities, from Beverley in the south to New Norcia in the north. Potter around quaint townships such as York, roam around in spring to see pretty wildflowers, delve into pioneer history and drive among rolling hills. To see the picturesque valley from above - perhaps sharing air space with a wedge-tailed eagle - take a ride with Windward Balloon Adventures, based in Northam. Arrive hungry in the monastic town of New Norcia and sample artisan treats such as nut cake and breads baked in the monastery’s century-old wood-fired oven. Quench your thirst with Abbey Ale, aged in the cellars beneath the monastery. Rottnest Island, a 90 minute ferry ride from Perth, is famous for tiny wallabies known as Quokkas. Head over on a day trip and cycle around the island, or spend the night there for the best chance of seeing the cute nocturnal marsupials that emerge mid Quokka

140 - Food, art & shopping to late afternoon to forage (there are free daily Quokka guided walks). Rottnest offers a range of accommodation. A great choice is the Hotel Rottnest, a historic hotel where the Governor of Western Australia used to lodge over summer. With more than 900 speciality shops within Perth City you will be spoilt for choice with everything from designer fashion and local boutiques, to department stores, home wares, adventure gear,

electronic goods and more. International brand name stores are now ubiquitous along Murray Street, and Hay Street, with smaller shops selling local designs, jewellery and accessories. Perth’s arcades – designed to spare shoppers from the summer heat – are also flourishing. The best-known are Carillon City, enex100, Piccadilly Plaza and Trinity Arcade. The newest addition is 140, an exciting urban space on the Corner of William and Murray Streets, which combines, eating venues and contemporary street art.

Who can apply for the programme? The programme is open to a spouse or dependant (over the age of 16) of a Service person, Veteran or Reservist.
