Salka is a family run business in which we specialise in natural seaglass jewellery. We collect all the beautiful pieces ourselves from the beaches and shores all around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, including the famous shores of Loch Ness. Genuine, natural seaglass is formed when glass makes its way into the sea to then be bashed, battered and smoothed for years by the sea to be given that rich, frosted appearance. All the unique seaglass that features in our jewellery www.salkajewellery.co.uk has come from spending years in the wild waters of the failte@salkajewellery.co.uk Scottish sea until it comes to rest on the beautiful shores 07858 372 262 and beaches, ready and waiting for us to find them.

POSH Original Art

Welcome to issue 7 of Just for Her… I cannot believe that this is the Christmas issue already! It has therefore been a whole year since we relaunched ‘Just for Her’ and what an incredible year it has been! The feedback and support we have received, from both readers and contributors, has been overwhelming and we cannot thank you enough. I would like to say a particular thank you to Kate Saines who has written many of the fantastic articles which you have been reading and is always ready to offer words of support and encouragement. Don’t forget, if you want to subscribe to Just for Her, to ensure you receive every issue through your door, please visit www.justforhermilitarymag.co.uk. We’re here to help with Christmas this issue and are offering 40 lucky readers, the chance to win tickets to ‘The Festive Gift Fair’. As well as the obligatory ‘Christmas Gift Guide’ we also have some excellent advice from Cat Williams on surviving Christmas and can highly recommend her book ‘Stay Calm & Content - No Matter What Life Throws At You’. In this issue, we interview the founder of ‘Huggable Heroes’ as well as the extremely talented Jacqueline Hurley from POSH Original Art about her moving ‘War Poppy Collection’. We are extremely excited to welcome ‘The Real Military Housewife’ and know you will enjoy her hilariously frank column on ‘Patch Life’. Not ones to shy away from controversial issues, we discuss ‘Staying Faithful’ and whether there is a ‘Divide in the Ranks’. This issue, Michelle from ‘Not Just A RAF Wife’ talks openly and honestly about her family’s experience of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and urges you to stay strong and you can get through it. For a bit of light relief, browse our fashion pages to stay warm, yet stylish, this winter. We take our pick of this year’s best ‘Christmas Jumpers’ as well as outfits to see you through the party season. Need a bit of inspiration? Enter our competition to win a pair of tickets to ‘The Clothes Show’ at the NEC in December. For anyone that would like to appear in the next issue, the closing date for contributions is 16th November 2015.

REMEMBR IS EVERY DAY With Remembrance Sunday approaching, Just for Her speaks to Jacqueline Hurley, the expressionist artist behind the ‘War Poppy Collection’. Her 24 piece collection is a tribute to our Armed Forces and a lasting memorial to all those fallen and injured in past campaigns. She paints to evoke emotion, reflection and remembrance in her poignant and evocative style and has received international critical acclaim as well as the full support of The Royal British Legion. Here Jacqueline tells us more about her work and the person behind it…

JFH: Hi Jacqueline, welcome to Just for Her! Please tell us a bit about yourself? JH: I am a mum of 12 year old twins. We live in Bournemouth which is a beautiful town on the South Coast. I am also an expressionist artist. I believe that there is art in this world for everyone but I mostly paint remembrance paintings as a tribute to our Armed Forces. After leaving school I trained as a nursery nurse and for 17 years worked in a primary school in a reception class. However, due to ill health I lost my job in April 2014. I have always loved painting, but due to working full time as well as being a mum, there was little time left to paint. Although this was a difficult time, I can see now it was a blessing in disguise. Like many of my generation, both my grandfathers served during World War 2. My grandpa Les joined the Royal Navy at the start of WW2 as an able seaman. He was later commissioned as a gunnery officer. During the war he served on the aircraft carrier HMS Furious at the time the spitfires were launched to save Malta. He also served for two years on the Arctic convoys to Russia and another 2 years mine sweeping from Dover. My grandpa often talked of his time in the Royal Navy before he retired as a Commander. It was a very special part of his life. My other grandfather, Grandad Jack also served. He was in the Territorials before the war and served with the Royal Engineers at the start of the war, later serving with the Royal Signals in North Africa. After they died there were so many questions I wished I had asked. The same with my grandmothers. Although they all shared many of their experiences and this time in their lives were often talked about, I still wished that I had asked more questions and had a better understanding to pass on to my children. WW1 and WW2 are part of this county’s history and heritage and too much has been

sacrificed for the freedom we are blessed with today, for those who lived and fought through this period to be forgotten. I am of the last generation whose grandparents lived through a world war and our children need to understand what generations before them lived through and that our freedom wasn’t free. As George Santayana famously quoted, “The one who does not remember history is bound to live through it again.” What does POSH stand for? POSH stands for Port Out, Starboard Home. It is quite interesting to read about where the word POSH is thought to have come from. The most desirable cabins on the British steamships travelling to India at the turn of the century were on the Port side, sailing out and on the Starboard side sailing home. It is believed that travellers luggage and tickets were stamped POSH if fortunate enough to be able to afford one of these shady cabins, away from the heat of the sun. However the reason why I use the name Port Out, Starboard Home POSH is because all ships and aircraft have a port side (left) and a starboard side (right). All our troops travel out by either ship or aircraft and we all hope and pray they return home. What inspired your collection? I only started the collection last October when one evening I was thinking of a friend of mine, Royal Marine Neil Dunstan who was tragically killed by an IED whilst serving with the Royal Marines Brigade Reconnaissance Force in Afghanistan on the 12th November 2008. So many lives have been lost in more recent conflicts and this is what inspired me to paint scenes of the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan in my War Poppy Collection. My paintings in the War Poppy Collection are tributes to our heroes in our Armed Forces and my personal thank you to our troops, veterans and their families and as a remembrance to our fallen.

BRANCE DAY What do you enjoy most about your work? Visual art is a powerful means of communication, it speaks a universal language. I am both passionate about supporting our troops and passionate about what my paintings represent. Remembrance Day is every day. The most wonderful thing about my work is that I am able to use it to reach out to the people I paint to thank, and the families of those I paint to remember. I have been able to help support forces charities including: Shoeboxes For Our Heroes, Forces Support Charity, Mind 2 Mind, Forward Assist, Help For Heroes, Helping Families Suffering with PTSD, RTTW (National Memorial Arboretum), Combat Stress, The DMWS, The Royal Air Force Association, The Royal British Legion, UK Homes For Heroes and Soldiers Off The Streets by donating signed prints as raffle prizes and to be auctioned at fundraising events. I also donate to the Royal Marines Association charity “Adam’s Hoofing Hut” and I have a Commercial Association Agreement with the Royal British Legion whom I donate to from sales of War Poppy prints. I take my artwork to events where I have been hosted by The Royal British Legion and The Army Air Corps. This gives me the opportunity to meet and talk with so many wonderful and amazing people who approach me because of my art. They share with me their own personal experiences of either serving in our Armed Forces or having loved ones with military connections. I have both laughed and cried with many of them. These are very special times for me. I hope my paintings touch hearts and emotions and help to keep the importance of remembrance in the forefront of our minds.

What materials do you use? I paint using acrylics and add impasto gels to thicken the paint to create texture. Texture and lots of layers is part of my expressionism style, as what’s hidden is equally as important as what is visible. This represents the mind and often the long term suffering which war often inflicts.

Although my images depict war, I try to bring an element and sense of peace to my work, this being what we all hope for and what lives have been sacrificed for. I use a mostly monochrome palette and the stark redness of the remembrance poppies. This creates contrast against the highly textured, gritty impressionistic landscapes. 7

Just 4 Her Iss 7 15.indd 7

30/09/2015 16:50

All the 24 paintings in the War Poppy Collection feature silhouettes which often allow the image to become more personal or sentimental to the people I paint for. I paint to evoke emotion, reflection and remembrance in what has been described as a poignant and evocative style. Do you have a favourite painting in the collection? It would be impossible for me to choose a particular painting as a favourite as they are all so meaningful to me and I painted each of them to thank different people in our Armed Forces. The first painting in the collection “We Remember, We Fight On” is special as my fallen friend Royal Marine Neil Dunstan was the inspiration to start the painting. Medic On The Mountain is special as it is the only painting I have done based on an actual photograph. This was sent to me by a Private Soldier called Mike Warman who was attached to 3 Yorks Ops Platoon on Herrick 16. He was a medic and I found his photograph so inspirational that I needed to recreate it in my own style. “My Knight In Body Armour” is also very special as it can mean so many things to different people in different ways. This is why I am so passionate about my expressionistic way of painting. All my images are so subjective and can be interpreted in however way a person chooses to interpret them. I love the freedom of art! My paintings could be your dad, mum, brother, sister, son, daughter, a loved one, a memory, someone who fought alongside y ou,YOU. What feedback have you received? I have been totally overwhelmed by the positive feedback and the extremely touching comments, messages and emails I have received as well as the feedback I have received at events. In such a short space of time I have had nearly 2,600 people liking my Port Out, Starboard Home page on Facebook and over 5200 followers on my POSHoriginalART Twitter page. I have received messages from bereaved family members which have brought me to tears and have received so many lovely comments which tell me how appreciated and meaningful my remembrance art is. I would love to share some of the words of such a cherished letter I received from a veteran: “Your talent has found me and speaks to a 8

Just 4 Her Iss 7 15.indd 8

part of me that is never lost but somehow I cannot vocalise. Your pictures stir a deep and profound something that only exists inside those who know what it means to see first- hand and their families share their pain. The print I purchased is a cherished possession by my family and I, as we have lost friends along the way, and when I find the perfect frame and the perfect place, it will take pride of place in our home. A constant and fitting reminder of those friends and the good times we had along with the gratitude of all those we know. You know you never forget the pain, and embrace the joy. Remember who they were and what they did, don’t dwell on the hole that was left behind. I appreciate what you do and I do thank you. I am blessed to live in a world where someone with an amazing talent is able to grasp an emotion and transfer it into a medium that can be understood by many as words and feelings cannot always be conveyed.” What are your plans for the future? Is there another collection on the horizon? It took me 6 months of painting 24/7 to paint the War Poppy Collection. The paintings followed each other with such spontaneity, allowing me to totally open up my emotions and express my feelings on to the canvases. I never imagined when I began painting it that it would become such a large collection and once I had completed one, the next was literally bursting out of me! As I find comfort and inspiration painting through the quiet of night, I have a lot of missed sleep to catch up on! I plan to paint a smaller WW1 and WW2 collection next, following many requests and a personal need to commemorate and remember them through my art. Before committing to this though, as I realise it will take a lot of time, I hope to give the War Poppy Collection as much exposure as I can and reach out to all those I have painted it for to give my thanks and to show them my appreciation of the sacrifices they have made for us all. The families of our troops also make such a huge sacrifice and I thank them also. Do you exhibit your work? How can we purchase a print? It has always been very important to me to exhibit and share the complete War Poppy Collection together in a place which epitomizes remembrance.

Opportunities have come up to exhibit, along with a lot of interest in the original paintings, however I decided to wait for when I felt in my heart that it was right. This has allowed an amazing opportunity to happen through the continued support which I have received from The Royal British Legion. In accordance with the Director General of the Royal British Legions wishes, the intent is to display the complete collection of War Poppy originals in the entrance lobby of The Royal Albert Hall in London for The Festival of Remembrance. It is also the intent to display them at the National Memorial Arboretum early next year prior to them going up for sale, with donations being made to The Royal British Legion. Prints are currently available to purchase either through my website www. poshoriginalart.co.uk or through my online shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/ PortOutStarboardHome

Equality for War Widows To lose a husband or partner whilst they are serving their country is devastating, they are often young men full of life and have great expectations of an exciting, fulfilling military career…

W

e, as their loved ones, support them and share the life they chose without complaint or showing fear when they are sent into dangerous situations. We tell them how proud we are and how much we will miss them, making sure, when they leave us, their thoughts are positive and filled with promises of wonderful times ahead upon their return. Some of our loved ones never come home and the promises can never be fulfilled. They lose their lives, often, in horrific circumstances, leaving their loved ones to cope with the devastating pain of loss. Widow(er)s are then faced with the struggle of rebuilding their shattered lives. The distress for widow(er)s from 1973/2005, was compounded by the fact that if they found happiness again, their pensions were revoked. It seemed they were being punished for moving on with their lives. The recent changes to the Forces Pensions Scheme from April 2015, which allows all widow(er)s who remarry, cohabit or form a civil partnership to retain their pension for life should be applauded along with those who have campaigned tirelessly for this change. Last November the government took great delight in saying that in line with the Forces Covenant no one should

“It is absolutely wrong that some Armed Forces widow(er)s lose their pension if they choose to remarry”. have to choose loneliness in order to retain their financial independence and dignity. Mr Cameron also declared, “It is absolutely wrong that some Armed Forces widow(er)s lose their pension if they choose to remarry”. However the amendments fail to include those same widow(er)s who have already had to make this cruel choice. The government, in neglecting these widow(er) s, have said that in line with previous governmental policies they will not make retrospective change. This is not strictly accurate as widow(er)s who fail to qualify for a pension under the means test rule will now automatically have their pensions retrospectively reinstated. Simple justice demands the same treatment for widow(er)s who have already remarried or are cohabiting. They too should have their pensions reinstated.

Discrimination Against War Widows is a group of forces widows, not affiliated to any other forces charity, who are speaking out against this injustice. Our aim is to gain equality for the war widow(er)s who remarried/cohabited and are excluded from these recent changes to forces widow(er)s pensions. Currently we are the few representing the many and we would welcome any inquiries or support regarding our campaign.

Please contact us at this email address: 73trooper@gmail.com or you can find details of our campaign at: https:// you.38degrees.org.uk/ petitions/discriminationagainst-war-widows-thewrong-time-to-die 11

In the first few weeks and months after having a baby, the idea that life will ever return to some kind of normality seems utterly ridiculous. It’s as if some teeny tiny person has put your former life in a snow globe, shaken it up good and proper, and there you are standing at the base of the globe catching glimpses of the things you love - sleep, eating dinner at the same time as your other half, sleep, drinking hot coffee, sleep, cooking, sleep, reading, sleep - swirling about above you and waiting desperately and impatiently for them to settle and for there to be calm again. You adore your baby, couldn’t imagine life without them, but at the same time you’re also mourning the life that you once had and all that precious sleep you foolishly took for granted.…

Neglected Cookbook s

Proper Lush…

I

n the early days of having a baby, when you’re up every 2 hours at night feeding and then desperately trying to get them to sleep anywhere that isn’t on your chest, you’ll hear many well-meaning people tell you that “it does get better”. After 6 weeks of surviving on 2 hours sleep a night the most civil you can get is uttering “does it?” through gritted teeth while in your head cursing them for not offering to pay for you to go on all inclusive tropical holiday while they take on the night feeds for the next six months. People are just so bloody selfish, and sleep deprivation does indeed send you temporarily insane as well as leave you with unreasonable expectations of your friends and family. So as you can imagine, I am pleased to say that the snow in our globe has now settled. We actually now get real sleep and hallelujah, I’ve got some time in the evening to cook again.Yay me! This combined with the fact that we’ve recently had our new kitchen installed and it’s bloody amazing means I’m now cooking with fire baby (or if it’s accuracy you’re after, an induction

hob). After cooking in a dire kitchen for two years and sticking to the same old recipes, I’m now feeling ambitious in the kitchen again and have been delving back into my cookbooks. The Boyfriend bought me Tom Kerridge’s Proper Pub Food book a couple of years ago for Christmas but the recipes involved too many steps and needed lots of equipment which would have been an absolute nightmare to even attempt in our old kitchen, so the book sat quietly in a box until this very week. The Boyfriend sped off to Paris today for work, so I wanted to cook him something very British before entering the city of croissants, steak frites, moules mariniere and escargot. Tom Kerridge’s book of pub food seemed just the ticket, so I went for smoked haddock fishcakes with cheese sauce and fried eggs, which just reeks of Britishness. If you have this book and haven’t cooked this recipe yet, I urge, implore and beg you to do so. It is so unbelievably good. So good in fact that my biggest food critic The Boyfriend could only gush about

how amazing the dish was and how it was the best fishcake he had ever had. I even got a text this morning from him while in St Pancras waiting for the train saying how jealous he was that I got to have the leftovers for dinner tonight. The man was on his way to PARIS for goodness sake, the centre of the good food universe, so take from that what you will about this recipe. I know you’re sitting there wondering how the humble fishcake could be so darn good, but this is no ordinary fishcake. If you don’t know who Tom Kerridge is, he’s the first pub chef to ever win a Michelin star for his pub ‘The Hand and Flowers’ and he’s on TV a fair bit. He’s a big guy with a proper West Country accent and whenever I see him on the telly he always seems like such a nice guy with no pretensions, he just cooks food that you really want to eat. It goes without saying that I really want to eat at his pub, and that I trust his recipes for British pub food. The fishcakes are packed full of fish, which sounds like an obvious thing to say but so many fishcakes should really be called

14

‘potato cakes with a sprinkling of fish’ such is the content of them. Tom’s would sail through the trade descriptions act, which is one reason why they are so damn good. There is a small amount of potato in there which holds the cake together, as well as chives, salt and pepper, and sweet baby Jesus, little cubes of mozzarella. This is then coated in flour, eggs and panko breadcrumbs and fried in some oil. The cheese sauce is fairly simple to make too, and this would also breeze through the trade descriptions act with the heart stopping amount of cheese needed to turn a standard white sauce into the cheesiest of all cheese sauces. Peter Andre has nothing on this sauce. Topped with a fried egg (runny yolk, obviously) you have dinner perfection. The fishcakes ooze melted mozzarella and you get that lush effect of the cheese stretching from your fork to the dinner

plate when you start tucking in, and then you have big chunky flakes of smoked fish (please buy the undyed haddock if you plan on making this as the yellow stuff doesn’t even compare) and a crunchy coating from the panko breadcrumbs. The cheese sauce is amazing, as well it should be with the crazy amount of parmesan and cheddar (the recipe does call for gruyere instead of cheddar but my fridge was full of cheddar and with this being a British recipe it felt like the patriotic thing to do) contained within. Sure, you could make this healthier by reducing the amount of cheese, and you could remove the mozzarella from proceedings entirely, and I suppose you could poach an egg instead of frying one, but all of this would be hugely detrimental to the dish. Saying all that, I would definitely serve this with plenty of vegetables on the side to assuage your conscience and delude yourself that by having some of your five a day with this that it’s actually a really healthy meal. Tom has turned the fishcake into an absolute masterpiece, and by taking away everything that makes this dish great you’re left with something completely un-special.

If all the other recipes in the book are as good as this one then Tom has come up with an amazing book. The flavours in this dish hit you with a massive punch and the devil is in the detail - stringy mozzarella oozing from this fishcake is what made it for me, although the cheese sauce is not to be sniffed at, nor the crispy coating. Food like this shows how far English cooking has come in the last decade or so and that when done right it absolutely can compete with the big boys in France. This recipe has also given me my confidence in the kitchen back and inspired me to keep on trying new things and get me out of my comfort zone. In the words of the West Country boy himself, this dish is proper lush!

When PTSD Rears its Ugly Head… I’ll never forget the day that my husband finally realised he had PTSD; it hit him like a high speed train and came out of nowhere… It was April 2012 and we were sat in the garden of our house in Anglesey. He was chatting about a friend of his that had recently been diagnosed with this horrid illness and explaining some of the symptoms and feelings he’d been having. Something clicked and I casually asked him if he thought maybe he was also suffering with PTSD (as you do!)? And then came an unbearable silence... followed by realisation.... lots of tears... and 3 long years of recovery. On more than one occasion I’ve wished that I had kept my ‘casual’ mouth shut that day. The reality, of course, was that I’d known something was wrong for a long time. Ever since his last detachment in Afghan he had changed and in the immediate months that followed, he had become very withdrawn. At that point, he was due to move away from Chinooks and pursue a new opportunity on a Search and Rescue squadron. In my naivety, I hoped that a fresh start somewhere new, away from the monotonous cycle of tours to Afghanistan, would give him the pick-up he needed. We’d only recently married and were looking forward to starting a new adventure. Sadly, things didn’t work out in the way we expected. The move to Anglesey, miles away from friends and family, seemed to make things worse, rather than better. My husband was back in training, which he enjoyed, but had lots of time on his hands – which, in hindsight, I can see was spent remembering awful moments from the past. The longer we were there, the worse he became and

there were lots of times that I wondered whether it was me, or whether he regretted getting married. He became more and more withdrawn, very low, irritable and refused to socialise, which was difficult because I was desperate to meet people and make new friends. It’s a difficult illness to understand. Some days were better than others. Some days were horrific. And I just couldn’t understand why; we had just married, had a beautiful new house, lived in a stunning part of the country and had our whole future ahead of us... what was there to be miserable about!? You can’t help but question yourself. It wasn’t until he started talking about his friend’s situation that everything started to make sense... but even then it took a while. He’d mention something in passing every now and then, which would ring an alarm bell, but then you’d push it to the back of your mind and carry on. Eventually, I pieced together a massive jigsaw and I suppose that day in the garden, the final piece just slotted into place. Once you’ve acknowledged something like PTSD, it’s really hard to hide away from. And even more hard to know where to go with it. I remember wondering about what would happen next and what I should be doing to help? Should I be calling family and letting them know? Getting in touch with a doctor? Calling a helpline? It was very confusing. And watching the man I love crumble into a person I didn’t recognise made it harder. But I’m sharing this story because I want others who are going through the same thing to know that there IS light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a long, trying journey, but you can make it. Jumping forward to 2015, we are happy, settled and excited about the future. I’m not ashamed to admit that our first 3 years of married life

were challenging, but that was because of the illness, not because of us. And getting through something like this only makes you stronger – such a cliché, but so true! You have to be patient and be kind to yourself. As the spouse of someone that is suffering with PTSD, you often feel neglected and lost – it can feel like you’ve turned into an afterthought. And then you feel selfish for even thinking that because you can see what the other person is going through and it’s distressing to watch. Being the person that has to carry on is tough and it’s OK not to feel too chuffed about the situation you’re in; but sometimes, you literally have to man up, pull your shit together and save your tears for another day. The thing I found hardest was waiting… waiting for things to ‘get back to normal’. You kind of forget what ‘normal’ is, to be honest! After a while, normal is just feeling sad and wishing you weren’t. But suddenly, things just start to change and you don’t feel so sad anymore. It happens so slowly that you don’t even notice it! Then, all of a sudden it hits you. For me it was when we were both sat in the garden drinking wine (standard) – we were joking about something (probably pissed) and laughing and I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness and relief - “Thank God! We’ve made it!” The strangest thing was that as my husband started to get better, he actually wanted to go back to flying Chinooks. It took him a year to take the plunge and ask to move back to Odiham, but so far it was the best decision we’ve made. He’s back doing a job he loves and has no regrets. If you’re helping someone with PTSD, keep strong. Things do get easier. And when you’re out the other side, you’ll be glad you stayed xx

TIPS AND TRICKS

for PERFECTING YOUR

P

HAIR

erfecting your hair isn’t always easy to achieve, especially when you have to battle changes in the weather, heat from styling products and general tugging from being pulled up into ponytails or twisted into plaits - that’s without even considering the dreaded bad hair days, unruly hair and hair that just won’t cooperate! That is why it is vital that you take care of your hair all year round to give yourself the maximum chance of good hair days and hairstyles that look great on the first attempt. Ensure your hair is hydrated for summer, conditioned for winter and looks healthy at all times. There are a number of tips and tricks you can use to ensure your hair looks the best it can at all times. Here are 3 of our favourite ways to perfect your hair. Take a look at just how quick and easy it can be! Hair Hacks for Getting Perfect Hair…

Coconut Oil Coconut oil has burst onto the scene lately as a ‘must have’ product for just about everything; hair, beauty and cooking included. Using coconut oil is a great way to perfect your hair as it keeps your locks conditioned, hydrated and really healthy - all of which help with styling and the overall appearance of your hair. Simply coat your hair in coconut oil, wait and wash. This can be done in an hour, a few hours or even overnight. When the coconut oil is removed hair is left feeling soft and luscious.

Texturising Spray One of the main issues we are faced with when styling is limp, lifeless and all round dull looking hair which wreaks havoc when it comes to creating a voluminous updo or giving your hair some body. Using texturising spray adds life, creates volume and gives your hair some texture - leaving you with hair that not only styles well, but that can be worn down without looking flat or thin.

Dry Shampoo We all want freshly washed hair every day, but with a lack of time and other commitments this is far from possible; not to mention that washing your hair daily can in fact damage it in the long run. Dry shampoo is one of the best hair hack products available at the moment. Simply spray some into your hair to decrease the visibility of grease and to leave it looking fresh and clean. After all, perfection begins with hair that looks and feels clean! 32

IT’S NOT JUST FITNESS…

IT’S PERSONAL

A great workout session can help you feel pumped and positive and while you can get one all by yourself, a personal trainer can help you kick things up a notch and ensure your time at the gym is spent as efficiently as possible. Personal trainers are one of the best investments you can make for your health because they motivate you and support you along the way without giving up. Need some convincing? Read on: HOLDING YOU ACCOUNTABLE

MAXIMUM RESULTS

Personal trainers are like workout buddies, they hold you accountable. “Can’t” is not in their dictionary and they aren’t as lenient as real workout buddies. You have a goal, your trainer will devise a solid plan for you to achieve it and will not take no for an answer. Some of us tend to hit the snooze button in the morning and try to sleep in during our gym time. If you miss your scheduled meeting with your trainer, you’re definitely going to get a phone call asking where you are. When there’s a person waiting for you to show up, it’s highly likely that you will be there on time.

Your personal trainer will check your body-fat percentage, analyze your body size, work around any longstanding injuries and help you set a goal and a workout routine that suits you. Most people who formulate exercise plans themselves, often fail to reach their full potential while working out.Your trainer will make sure you work everything from your shoulders to your legs.Your trainer will give you that extra push, that “come on, just 5 more” you need to complete a workout and get results. In addition to not getting an added push, you may be compromising on your form too which also makes workouts ineffective. For example, doing squats incorrectly will either lead to no results or a painful injury.

INJURY PREVENTION This is perhaps one of the most important reasons for hiring a personal trainer. Having a one on one session with a trainer will ensure that you perform your workouts in a risk-free and effective manner. Almost every piece of equipment will have step by step guidelines at the gym, but equipment such as free weights don’t come with any instructions.Your hip may be titled to the side, your grip maybe off, your feet may be too close together or you may be using a piece of equipment completely wrong. All of this puts you at a high risk of injury and can make your efforts worthless. A personal trainer watches your every rep, making sure your form is proper and effective.

STAY UP-TO-DATE Personal trainers are constantly learning because they need to stay up-to-date with their certifications.Your trainer will definitely be aware of what the latest fitness trends are, what routines are being proven to be more effective and yes, nutrition guidelines too.Your trainer will give you a dip on what you should eat, and what you shouldn’t to a certain extent, to help you reach your goals more effectively.

Cat

Dear

“ Dreading the festive season…”

“I am secretly dreading the festive season, am I the only one? Every time Christmas rolls around it seems to bring with it so much pressure to be ‘having a wonderful time’ that I am usually having exactly the opposite! Maybe it’s because, as a military family, we can never choose the kind of Christmas we would really like, my husband is either away, or we are in a different country from family and friends, or we have too many of them to stay, in too small a house, for too long a time period!

Have you got any tips for making this Christmas a happy occasion rather than the stressful one it seems to always turn out to be!” Karen

Thank you so much to Karen for raising this topic. I agree that Christmas can so often turn out not to be the “happily singing carols round the fireside” stereotype that the media likes to portray, but there is hope! Here are my top tips for a happy and stress-free Christmas: 1. Know that it is all about self-esteem and self-confidence You might not think of your confidence as something that affects how you feel about Christmas but, just like any other challenging time, self-esteem and confidence, or the lack of it, is crucial. Christmas brings stress, and challenges our self-esteem, because of how much we expect; a) from ourselves: “I’m supposed to find the perfect present for everyone, to wrap them perfectly, write cards on time, prepare perfect food, find perfect decorations, get on well with everyone all the time …..” b) from those around us: “You’re supposed to be loving and happy all the time, you’re supposed to make me feel wonderful by finding me the perfect gift that shows amazing thought and preparation….” c) from the season in general: “Everyone is supposed to be having an amazing time, everyone else’s Christmas seems to be perfect, I bet their kids are thoughtful and grateful and perfectly behaved…” 2. Lower your expectations - perfection is impossible! Those who find Christmas the most enjoyable are those who accept it might be challenging, and so don’t expect perfection. He or she doesn’t ‘beat themselves up’ if they forget something, or if something goes wrong. They focus instead on what they can control, they maintain their self-belief, and they focus on building themselves and others up.

3. Learn to control your self-esteem When we feel happy and ‘at our best’ is when our self-esteem is good. We usually feel confident in our ability to cope with life even under unpredictable or challenging circumstances. If we feel overwhelmed by our circumstances then our confidence and feeling of being able to cope is ‘threatened’ and our physiological fight or flight instinct kicks in. This causes physical changes such as an increased heart rate, and we might feel hot, nauseous, or agitated. We will describe these physical experiences as negative emotions such as frustration, anger, fear or anxiety. If we are unaware what generates our negative emotions, then we will also be unaware that our subsequent actions are attempts to protect or repair our self-esteem. We instinctively do what makes ourselves feel more in control and ‘better’ at the time. Have you ever found yourself becoming angry or defensive more quickly, or arguing with your spouse or children over ‘nothing’, or doing something to ‘take your mind off it’ such as drinking or eating too much? If you are behaving in a negative way towards yourself or others then it is a clear sign that the pressure of Christmas is affecting your self-esteem. 4. Take responsibility You are the only one responsible for how you feel about yourself at any moment. Speak to yourself in your own head as if you are your own ‘best friend’ not your ‘worst enemy’. As soon as you speak to yourself in a more helpful and positive way you will notice a difference in how you feel. “No-one can make you feel inferior without your consent” Eleanor Roosevelt 5. Find somewhere to be alone when you start feeling stressed, or start ‘getting at’ yourself or other people Take slow deep breaths and imagine you are breathing in a warm, bright light and breathing out self-doubt and self-criticism. Say to yourself, out loud if possible – “I am okay, I can only do my best, I can cope with this, I believe in myself ”. Smile and stretch your arms to relieve your tension. (Watch my YouTube ‘Toilet Seat Therapy’ video to see this technique in action) 6. Get prepared. It’s not too late to use a diary. Write everything in the same place, appointments, timings, card list, gift ideas. Tick things off and your confidence will soar when you see how well you are doing to manage it all. 7. Make a present plan and set a budget If you have left it to the last minute, could all your relatives get vouchers, books, music or hampers this year. The simplest presents are often the best.

36

Just 4 Her Iss 7 15.indd 36

30/09/2015 16:57

8. Ask for help Fully appreciating an occasion means playing a part in it. Give others a chance to help, whether it’s with present buying, wrapping, or food preparation. If your ‘standards’ slip, then so be it, being a martyr isn’t all it’s cracked up to be! 9. Prioritise pleasure for yourself If you love a walk, a quiet bath, or a night out with just your partner then don’t forget these things during the festive period. They are important to you and you are important so find time for them and don’t feel guilty about it. 10. Ask what really matters? Let go of expectations and traditions if they are not really important to you. Focus your efforts on whatever really matters to you and those closest to you. 11. Don’t take it personally! Those we care most about have the most powerful influence over our self-esteem. Emotions run high at Christmas. Remember; you, not them, decide how you feel about yourself. If someone is unpleasant to you then he or she will be feeling low about themselves for some reason (they find Christmas challenging too!) and are attacking or criticising you to try to feel better. Don’t take it personally, their behaviour is about themselves not you, try to understand rather than criticise them in return. 12. Encourage and praise your partner, your family, friends and children during this festive season Giving praise and recognition shows healthy self-esteem and is the most likely way we will receive the same in return.

“Don’t wait for people to be friendly, show them how” Anonymous 13. Focus on being kind, supportive and welcoming No matter how others are behaving, try to be kind, supportive and welcoming and you will ensure a happy Christmas for yourself and those around you. Good luck!

BOOK REVIEW

Stay Calm and Content No Matter What Life Throws at You By Cat Williams

W

e’ve all been there. Happily sailing through our day, when that emotional juggernaut hits us head on. It might be a tactless comment from an acquaintance, a criticism from our boss or our favourite dress being smeared with chocolate ice cream by our toddler. Suddenly we are consumed by anger, drowned in fear or transformed to a crumpled ball of stress. The wonderful thing about Cat William’s book, Stay Calm and Content No Matter What Life Throws at You, is that after reading it, you’ll find you see these situations in a completely different light. For, while the book addresses ways people struggling with big problems such as marriage difficulties, bereavement or depression can cope with their anxieties, it’s also great for finding ways to deal more positively with every day blips. And it’s quite revelatory. Not least because Cat, a military wife, relationship counsellor and life coach, has identified one problem which she believes is behind almost every one of our anxieties, fears and stresses – low self-esteem. Cat believes, by taking control of our self-esteem, trying hard to

ensure that no one other than ourselves can influence it, and being less critical of others, we can liberate ourselves from some of the emotional pain we suffer – whether it is self-inflicted or through others. Cat, who specialises in counselling military relationships, takes us through exercises to help us become aware of and improve our self-esteem. She brings the book to life with scenarios – based loosely on real life situations she has encountered through her work. And each chapter is peppered with inspirational quotes from a variety of sources from the Dalai Lama and Anne

Frank to Whoopie Goldberg and Annie Lennox. The book is dedicated to the partners of armed forces personnel who Cat praises for their ability to cope, but who also, she believes, “need to become experts at finding ways to remain calm and to maintain their belief in themselves, no matter what challenges each new day brings”. This is one of those books to read, savour and then keep nearby to dip into at times when you think those hostile emotions might strike.

STAYING It is a sad fact that the divorce rate in the military is double of that of civilians. Sociologists studying the causes behind these uncomfortable statistics believe the main reason for this is down to the huge amount of time members of the armed forces spend away from their partners and families.

T

hen there’s the stress of their jobs which can put huge pressure on relationships. But they also cite the fact many military spouses are unfaithful as another reason for the high divorce rate. But is it really harder to stay faithful in a military relationship? Cat Williams, a military wife and relationship counsellor, said we all have the potential to cheat - whether we are a military spouse or in a relationship in the civilian world. People cheat, she explained, because they want to feel better about themselves, or because their existing relationship isn’t meeting their needs. “When we are feeling low, being wanted by somebody else, particularly when it’s secretive and risky is exciting and gives us a great boost to our selfesteem,” she said. The difference for women in military relationships is that they are on their own for long periods of time, and this can be very hard on them. “If we start to doubt ourselves,” said Cat, “perhaps [we doubt] our ability to cope, or we doubt our partner’s love for us in some way, then fear and insecurity creeps in. If an opportunity to have an affair presents itself it can be tempting to take it.”

But it’s not just the long absences which can trigger infidelity. Cat believes the unpredictability as well as the frequency and magnitude of changes during military life can really take their toll on relationships. “I think most military couples would agree that it’s the transitions from being alone, to together, to alone again which usually bring the greatest challenge,” she said. Samantha (not her real name), a mother of two, began an affair with a work colleague just over a year after the birth of her first child. She admits that the insecurity of her life, and her husband’s low moods, were putting a strain on the relationship and that, combined with the stresses of having a small child, had seen her confidence plummet to rock bottom. “Every time I read a magazine I was being bombarded with yummy mummies, celebrities regaining their pre-pregnancy bodies weeks after giving birth and there was I with three stone of extra weight, stretch marks, and bags under my eyes the size of suitcases. I just thought I looked fat and ugly. I didn’t like the way I looked, and I just assumed that my husband found me hideous too.” Samantha returned to her job a year after her daughter was

born and started noticing she was getting attention from one of her colleagues, David (name changed).

exposed to traumatic situations. It’s stressful and it’s hard to understand what’s going on in your partner’s head.”

“He would compliment me on how I looked, be flirtatious and he made me laugh. It made me feel good.”

But while having an affair might seem like a solution to a problem - providing empathy or an ego boost, these feelings tend to be short lived. Cat said: “Everything unravels in the long run. We have to live with the guilt from the start, and then we usually eventually get found out, or we come clean, and then we have to live with a multitude of consequences. What started out as a bid to ‘feel better’ usually ends up making everyone involved feel much, much worse.”

It wasn’t long before Samantha had started an affair with her colleague, fabricating days out or weekends away with friends so she could spend time with David. “I did feel guilty, of course, but it was also a thrill. I couldn’t believe that someone actually found me attractive. It gave me such a boost.” The affair ended when David found another job and moved away. Samantha admits she has never told her husband about her affair but thinks he might have guessed something was going on. “I think he realised I was not myself. But I think he buried his head in the sand as it was too painful for him to acknowledge. I think he thought he would lose me if we admitted it was happening.” Does Samantha think unfaithfulness is more common in the armed forces? “I think it is common in any relationship where one partner is in a job where they are

AITHFUL Cat believes that communication is the vital tool required for couples to remain faithful. “[In the military] each partner has to be very self-reliant and resilient, whilst also being able to communicate with their partner openly, honestly and to reach out to each other whenever possible.” But we also need to be happy with ourselves, so we can gain that strength and contentment in ourselves that prevents us from seeking it elsewhere. For this reason Cat believes it’s important that we learn how to look after ourselves because when we feel at our best, we are also able to be the best partner we can be. “Stop criticising yourself,” she said, “it just brings you down and doesn’t help you feel at your best. If you are being criticised by someone, don’t believe them. People criticise others to feel better about themselves, so decide how you want to feel and behave and just be yourself. “Also, accept the things you cannot change, but change the things you can, especially the

things that will help your selfconfidence,” she adds. In fact there are plenty of things you can do to help boost your self-esteem including taking up your favourite hobby, exercising every day to increase endorphins, listening to your favourite music, getting plenty of fresh air and helping others around you.Talking to a good friend, who really understands you, can also help. Once you are feeling at your best, you can then focus on helping your partner, said Cat. “Be supportive of your partners’ interests and hobbies. Plan time together doing something you both enjoy and explain clearly how you are feeling - without blaming the other person - if something is bothering you.” If your marriage has suffered an affair, Cat said this does not have to mean the end. As both a military wife and a relationship counsellor she has counselled many military couples who have survived and thrived after an affair. “It takes a lot of courage on both sides to come to counselling, but if you can then you will be able to carefully explore the reasons why your relationship ran into trouble, what you both truly want and how you can achieve a bright future together.”

Divide in the Ranks Have you ever heard the phrase “wearing her husband’s rank”? It’s the term coined to describe those wives who take on their husband’s status within the armed forces and apply it to their own lives…

D

espite the fact we live in a modern society, where the shackles of the antiquated class system have supposedly been unleashed, there are many of you who can probably pinpoint occasions where ‘rank’ has filtered into relationships between wives and girlfriends and created a barricade. It might manifest itself in different ways, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest the divide in the ranks exists within the wider military community. But does this difference in status of husbands really affect the relationships between military spouses? Do they really keep themselves to themselves? Talking anonymously to Just for Her, one military wife told us that there are plenty of wives and girlfriends who befriend partners of personnel regardless of rank. However, she said being well acquainted with someone from a different status would pique interests. Indeed, if a car belonging to a Commanding Officer turned up in lower

ranking quarters, curtains would almost certainly start twitching. But is it any wonder there is still such obvious division? For nowhere is structure more rigid than it is in the armed forces, where hierarchy and organisation is so fundamental. Surely this meticulous order will naturally transfer into the everyday lives of the men and women who work in the armed forces - particularly if their families live with them in married quarters? Because, although there are plenty of socalled ‘mixed’ areas where families are not segregated according to rank, it is still, often, very obvious from the type or size of house whose inhabitants have the more senior role. Social events and clubs are often also organised with the pecking order in mind - the Officers’ Mess is still an exclusive area, and at social events the hierarchies are clearly defined. Indeed, an article published in the Daily Mail in 2011 by a former RAF wife, Annie Waller, went as far as to suggest that being

a military wife was much like being a housewife in the 1950s. She talked of losing her identity and socialising with snobbish wives, and ‘rank-conscious’ women. In her account she tells the story of a female neighbour appearing on her doorstep introducing herself as “Flight Lieutenant Jones’s wife” leaving Annie none the wiser as to her own identity. Annie’s account of life at RAF Lyneham included claims officers would look less favourably on a member of personnel as a potential promotion candidate because his wife did not wear the right clothes. She also revealed how her ‘mixing with the wrong ranks’ was described as a ‘big mistake’ after she invited a group of squaddie’s wives over to her house for a wine tasting session. Annie’s tale is clearly an individual account of life in the armed forces. It is certainly not indicative of most experiences. But, her discomfort in this clearly segregated environment is something which other spouses share.

hugely popular Military Wives Choir. One of the many achievements of the foundation has been to provide a place for all women regardless of their background, career, status or husband’s rank - to become friends and join together in a mutual understanding and interest. Organisations such as the choir exist to create stronger relationships between the wives and girlfriends of armed forces personnel. “Just as much as they build up unbreakable bonds, our choirs also break down barriers,” says the MWC’s publicity material. The subject of how women perceive other armed forces wives and girlfriends will always be a complex one, but there is one thing which seems entirely straightforward, however; It is that we are all individuals and should be treated as such - regardless of our partners. As American philosopher and poet Chris Jami said: “When I look at a person I see a person - not a rank, not a class, not a title”.

The Good Wife’s Guide In 1955, Good Housekeeping Monthly are rumoured to have produced the following ‘Good Wife’s Guide’. Thankfully a lot has changed in the last 60 years and the guide is not only hysterical, it seems completely absurd. Despite this, however, I did assume that on waking up a ‘Mrs’ I would suddenly possess baking skills to rival Mary Berry and an innate ability to darn socks! Sadly this was not the case, and not only has my husband had to continue to replace his holey underwear, he’s also had to stomach some pretty revolting attempts at ‘baking’. I’d say, amongst other things, he married me for my scintillating conversation and unrivalled ability to carry out any household chore using only a babywipe and it’s a good job, as judging by the guide below, I’ve a long way to go before reaching the wife standards of 1955!

• Have dinner ready Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready, on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favourite dish) is part of the warm welcome needed.

• Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

• Prepare the children Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimise all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.

• Prepare yourself Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

• Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him

• Be happy to see him

His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

• Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him

• Clear away the clutter Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives.

• Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper etc and then run a dustcloth over the tables

• Listen to him You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first – remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

• Make the evening his Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

• Your goal Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order and tranquillity where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

• Don’t greet him with complaints and problems • Dont complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

• Make him comfortable Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

• Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

• Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

• A good wife always knows her place Interesting you say? As he arrives through the door I will ‘gaily’ tell him that whilst he’s suffered through his ‘boring’ day at work, I too have been at work, returned home, and repeatedly wrestled household objects from the jaws of the cats, wrestled the cats from the clutches of the children and wrestled the children from the clutches of each other. I’ve attempted to tidy up whilst being dressed up as a fairy princess and attended a lavishly laid out tea party consisting of plastic sausages, a tin of tuna and a croissant. I’ve mopped up juice (with babywipes), wee (with babywipes) and tears (with, you guessed it, babywipes) and am yet to think of an answer to ‘why is the rabbit still at the vets?!’. Although the ultimate goal is for my home to be a place of peace, order and tranquillity, sadly this is a rare occurrence since having children. These days, if my husband wishes to renew either his body or spirit, he gets 2 minutes in the downstairs loo before the kids start hammering the door down and I’m yelling at him to stop hiding and help me out! I know my place, it’s somewhere hot and I’m lying down reading a book whilst sipping a cocktail. Until I’m there, I guess I better work on my wife skills!

JUST THE

JOB

S

adly, having a career and being a military wife are not two things which necessarily spring to mind as being compatible. In fact, even having a part-time job to keep the boredom at bay can prove tricky because of the fact armed forces wives and partners are so often on the move. But what if you could take your job with you? What if you could find a vocation or a career which you could simply pack up and move along with your personal belongings?

Ask an 11-year-old how to code and they’ll probably be able to give you a crash course! Terrifying as it sounds, coding is not even ‘the future’ it’s ‘the now’. And if you can learn how to do it, you could be tapping into an incredibly lucrative area of the jobs market. Our children are learning it at school because, when they enter the jobs market, many of the roles currently being filled by humans will be carried out by robots. But many of our children will be using their coding skills to programme that robot. What’s more the majority of coders are men - so there are lots of initiatives trying to encourage women into the arena. Best of all, coding can be done at home, at any time. As flexible working options go - this one fits the bill perfectly. You could

Remember to apply for a DBS certificate if you are planning to work with children, and - if you are inviting students into your home, you will also need Public Liability Insurance. NETWORK MARKETING Check out companies such as Pampered Chef or Usbourne Books who recruit people to run their own businesses selling their products. You will normally be asked to make an initial financial outlay - usually around £100 to £300 - to buy a starter kit to get you going. Then it’s up to you to start selling and making money. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to work from home, or who cannot commit to office hours, because the work is flexible. Most people running these sorts of businesses sell products via parties, which are normally in the evening, or using social media such as Facebook. You can do it full time, part time or dip in and out depending on how much money you want to make, and how entrepreneurial you want to be. Learning to code is like learning a new language. Except this new language is more universal - it holds the key to creating computer software, websites and apps. There are lots of courses available which will teach you how to code. There are wellpromoted companies such as Decoded. com which run “Code in a Day” courses in places like London, costing from £420 upwards depending on days and locations. However, you can also learn for free with organisations such as the Codecademy https://www.codecademy.com

BAKING It’s the oldest cliché in the military wives book - the woman who stays at home and bakes cakes while she waits for her husband. Well, why not turn the cliché on its head and make a business opportunity out of it. Thanks to the Great British Bake Off and the current obsession with all things vintage, creating cupcakes, baking and generally having fun with flour and fondant has become a lucrative area. It’s not just

PRIVATE TUTORING This is a great option for teachers or for anyone who is an expert at a particular skill or subject such as a foreign language or a craft such as dressmaking or carpentry. The difficulty with this job option is that you may start to build a client base in your location. However, if you know you will be staying for a set amount of time - a year, for example - you can limit clients to those who only require 12 months or less tutoring. A child who is being tutored for the 11 Plus exam, or GCSEs for example, might only need a year’s support. Many tutors are now offering their services online, using Skype, for example something which works well for language students.

FINALLY... WHAT TO AVOID! Beware! There are lots of “Work from Home” scams out there, so avoid answering ads via social media or online which are not very specific, yet make promises you can earn”£££!”. Alarm bells should ring if you need to hand over large chunks of money or if you have been contacted unsolicited by a company that talks about how it can offer “flexible working options for people just like you!” or some other non-specific claim. Most people start working from home using a skill they have already acquired. They tend to set themselves up as freelancers, calling up former colleagues and networking to build up customers, clients or work. There are plenty of websites out there that can help you market yourself too - check out elance and Peopleperhour. If you are not confident about marketing yourself you can still find flexible opportunities by applying for jobs in a more traditional way. Many employers from all sorts of industries are now looking for employees who can work from home. So, when searching for jobs, don’t forget to enquire about opportunities to work from home. Most jobs websites include a “homeworking” filter in the search engine. Good luck! 49

COPING with a

newborn

H

Having a newborn baby rocks your world. There is euphoria, joy and overwhelming love and then there is exhaustion, fear and sleep deprivation. It is as wonderful as it is terrifying. And it’s quite bewildering how such a tiny little bundle can have such a huge impact on our lives. Having a partner around to ease the emotional - not to mention physical burden and to share the highs and lows is crucial. But what if your partner is not there to share the load? What if, due to deployment, you are left, literally, holding the baby? Sharon Bristow, whose husband Eric is in the Royal Marines is one of many military wives and girlfriends to have found themselves in this very situation. Eric was deployed to Afghanistan when her son William was not quite ten weeks old. It was a winter tour, so not only was Eric leaving behind his baby, he would also miss his son’s first Christmas. Like many military wives, Sharon knew what she had signed up for when she married Eric and was pragmatic about the fact he was going to miss such a crucial stage in their son’s life.

“On the day our son was born, my husband was on an interview board for promotion. That’s his job, that’s what happens when you work in the armed forces,” she said. But, despite her logical approach to her husband’s deployment, being a new mum and having a husband in the armed forces came with its own set of difficulties. Not only did Sharon have to cope with a newborn alone, but the couple had only just moved to married quarters, so she didn’t actually know any other military wives. “My first experience of military wives was going to a baby group when William was four weeks old,” Sharon explained. To add to this, Sharon had preeclampsia and a complicated delivery and was in hospital for a month before her son’s birth. Upon her return home, she then had to get used to the constant demands of a newborn. “It was a shock to me,” she revealed, “I’d been this career

52

girl and suddenly I had this baby. They don’t come with a manual and he needed feeding and changing. And then there was the crying - you wonder what’s the matter.” Then Eric went to Afghanistan, and Sharon was on her own. The biggest difficulty, Sharon admits, when her husband was deployed, was getting through the 7pm to 7am period of each day. The daytimes were a whirl of social engagements. Sharon had already built up a network of friends outside of the armed forces through work and by joining an NCT group. Even when she had no plans to meet with friends, Sharon made sure to make the effort to go out, even if it was just to the shops to buy a newspaper. But the 12 hours throughout the evening and night proved tough. Sharon wanted her baby to have a routine and was putting him to bed at around 7pm, which proved restrictive. “Being stuck indoors from 7pm to 7am was definitely the hardest. If I ran out of milk, I couldn’t just go out of the house because there was no one to keep an eye on the baby.” The only way to survive the loneliness that these evenings created, Sharon said, was to keep busy. “I would spend the time prepping stuff or on the phone chatting,” she explained. The other problem was that Eric was only allowed one 20 minute phone call a week. This meant Sharon relied on e-blueys, which she was able to send frequently, with pictures of William attached, so Eric could see how his son was progressing. Eric’s absence at such a crucial time in the family’s life created difficulties, but Sharon admits it also made some things easier. “It was just me,” she said, “so I couldn’t be irritated with anybody. Also, I didn’t have to think about anyone else but me and my baby. If I wanted a bowl of cereal for tea, I could have a bowl of cereal for tea because there’s no one else to make tea for!” Sharon’s advice for other military wives or partners coping alone with a newborn is to make sure you take care of yourself. “Have a shower, put some make-up on, and try not to sit at home all day in your pyjamas. Try and get out of the house, even if it’s to go to the shops to buy a newspaper or a bar of chocolate,” she said. Sharon also suggests

be worth seeking the support of a doula. Although their role is to support mothers during the birth, some will also make return visits after the birth to provide support around the house.

Sharon, Eric and family being as organised as possible – making sure your fridge is stocked with milk, for example, so you can make that cup of tea when you are housebound.

It’s inevitable you will also get visitors during this time. Maureen suggests using them to your advantage and getting them to help with some jobs around the house - even just making you a cup of tea. Or, ask them to bring with them a meal for you to heat up later on - a lasagne or a casserole. And she also advocates, strongly, joining an antenatal group during pregnancy to build up friendships and support networks before the baby’s birth.

Her final piece of advice is to let people in. “You don’t have to cope alone, there are always people out there who will help they want to help.” This advice is echoed by experts, who agree “It’s inevitable you will also that whether your husband is deployed or not, those early get visitors days of your baby’s life are during this a time when you should be time. When your baby has arrived, Maureen said, you can get lots of help, support and social interaction by attending breastfeeding clinics, mother and baby groups and other classes and events. Health visitors are a brilliant source of information and will be able to point you in the direction of activities such as baby massage to help increase your contact with other mums in similar situations. Try also your local Children’s Centre or welfare office.

MY HUGGABLE

HERO Royal Marine wife and mum of 2, Jo Lomax, has had a whirlwind year since setting up Huggable Heroes. We catch up with the supermum, who created the personalised dolls to battle separation anxiety, to find out more about running a business, her inspiration and her future plans!

Tell us about yourself and your inspiration. Why did you start Huggable Heroes? My name is Jo Lomax, I am married to a serving Royal Marine and we have two beautiful Children, Charlotte 3 and Henry 1. My inspiration came from a conversation I had with my friend Katie whose husband was about to deploy for 6 months and her 4 year old daughter who was really upset. We commented that we could do with cuddly daddy toys and she then asked me to make her one. After two very long evenings I had made my very first Huggable Hero! I then made both of my children a Huggable Hero each as Daddy was working away during the week and home at weekends. The Heroes made a huge difference to our family and ‘Daddy’ never missed another thing. It has been a busy start for Huggable Heroes! What achievements are you most proud of? Wow! It really has been the most amazing

year so far. I am so proud of Huggable Heroes as a whole, however my proudest moments are when we receive happy customer photos and messages, especially when we hear that we have settled a heartbroken child who is struggling with separation anxiety. Why is a Huggable Hero so important to children whose parents have been deployed? Huggable Heroes are so important to children as they are helping to reduce separation anxiety by giving their Mummy or Daddy the very important cuddles they need and reinforcing the bonds between parent and child. What do you enjoy the most about running Huggable Heroes? Delivery Day! I love receiving the photos and videos of our happy customers. I turn into an emotional mess most weeks, happy tears of course.

What challenges have you faced? The biggest but most important challenge I have faced is making sure that each Huggable Hero meets toy safety standards meaning they are safe for children from birth and fully washable. You will see the CE mark on all of our Heroes. What plans do you have for the future of Huggable Heroes? I have big dreams for Huggable Heroes. My mind is constantly on over drive and we have new products in the pipeline as well as plans to help children from different backgrounds including civilian families, autistic children, hospital stays, separated families and families of a deceased loved one. You started Huggable Heroes with your mum. How is it working together? It’s great working with Mum although I

“Huggable Heroes are so important to children as they are helping to reduce separation anxiety by giving their Mummy or Daddy the very important cuddles they need and reinforcing the bonds between parent and child. “

What is the best thing about running your own business? There are two ‘best’ things. The first one is that I can still be a full time Mummy to Charlotte and Henry and the second is being able to do the most rewarding job that I absolutely love.

wish she lived closer. We are living 6 hours apart, but we spend hours on Facetime and the phone while we work and Royal Mail have been amazing sending Heroes between us at different stages of the making process.

What advice would you give other military wives and girlfriends looking to start a business? I would say, do it! It’s great being able to do a job you love around your family, meaning you can be there when your children most need you. What feedback have you received? I am honored to have received such amazing feedback from our customers, has spent many nights sobbing and ‘acting which has also included 100% positive out’ because she is unsure of what to do with feedback that Huggable Heroes reduce her emotions at such a young age. “Thank you so much for our wonderful Huggable Heroes! My boys have been really struggling since their daddy joined his ship and started pre deployment training, but they get real comfort from their Huggable Hero! It’s making bedtime easier and I’m sure they’ll be worth their weight in gold with a 9-month deployment looming later this year. I’ve got one ready for the little girl we are expecting in the summer. It makes me feel better to know that she’ll be able to still see her daddy all the time, even if he’s going to miss so much of her first year. They are absolutely gorgeous, thank you so much! Celebrate Tiny Tears’ 50th anniversary with a limited edition doll… First launched in the UK in 1960’s, the Tiny Tears range of dolls has been loved by little girls for generations! The UK’s most recognisable doll, Tiny Tears, was the first fully functioning feeding, crying and wetting doll with closing eyes, moveable arms, legs and head. The Classic Tiny Tears doll (RRP £19.99) is the original feeding, crying and wetting doll. Pretty in pink, Tiny Tears comes dressed in a spotty pinafore dress and wears a headband in her shoulder length hair. Included are lots of essential accessories, including potty, bottle, pacifier, pull up knickers and hair brush. Feed Tiny Tears and she’ll cry tears and need changing, so you need to look after her! She has an all-vinyl body and limbs, jointed arms and legs and hair rooted into her head, which makes her a perfect companion for any girl aged 3 years and over. If the very mention of Tiny Tears brings back fond memories then you’ll love the limited edition Tiny Tears 50th Anniversary Doll (RRP £29.99). As a first introduction to motherhood, generations of mums and grandmothers have grown up with Tiny Tears – and now your children can too! To celebrate her 50th anniversary, this special edition Tiny Tears doll is all dressed up in a sparkly birthday princess dress along with a vintage curly hairstyle. Just like the traditional doll, you can still feed Tiny Tears from her very own water bottle then put her on her potty to wet, sit her up and she will cry real tears, like a real baby! When it’s time for a nap, snuggle up as you lay her down and see her eyes gently close, ready for sweet dreams. The 50th anniversary limited edition doll also comes complete with a potty, bottle and a keepsake special commemorative certificate, printed with its own unique number!

hances are if you haven’t already adopted this tradition, you have at least heard of ‘The Elf on a Shelf – A Christmas Tradition’. The beautifully illustrated, hardback, book arrives in a keepsake box, along with your choice of either a boy or girl elf doll. Co-written by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell, the children’s picture book tells the story of Santa’s ‘scout elves’ who during the festive period, watch

children by day and report back to Santa each night. When children awake, the elf has returned from the North Pole and can be found hiding in a different location. This fun tradition creates a magical game of hide and seek and children delight in finding out what their elf has been up to whilst they have been asleep. If you have or will be purchasing an elf, and need some inspiration, here are some of the things the Just for Her elves have been up to!

Sara Psychic Crystal Card Reader Sessions can be done face-to-face or I can done via email

I have been interested in the spiritual world since I was very young. The spiritual world gave me great comfort during some hard years of personal loss. I tried reading tarot cards but just couldn’t get on with them, so decided to make my own way of reading. I have 50 crystals that all have special meanings and 50 home made cards; it’s a modern day tarot. I get a lot of positive feedback from readings & people I work with love my cards.

ability to create stylish, fitted garments using a freehand cutting method that was taught to her by an aunt. In Freehand Fashion, Chinelo lets us in to the secret of how she does it. Using a series of basic garment blocks, she explains how this innovative technique can be used to create a whole wardrobe of fashionable clothes. Based on a traditional Nigerian technique, Chinelo has developed a freehand cutting method that emphasises the individual’s own body measurements. This is a surprisingly simple technique that anyone can learn. No fancy equipment is needed – just a sewing machine, measuring tape, chalk and a good pair of scissors. Full step-by-step instructions are included for a rage of garments, including practical tops, skirts, day dresses and eveningwear. This is an exciting sewing technique that will be brand new to most people, even to experienced dressmakers. There really are no limits, and the beauty of this technique is that it can be applied to any body shape. Photographer: Laura Lewis Chinelo Bally is a Nigerian-born Brit with an overly healthy appetite for fashion and sewing. In 2014, Chinelo appeared on the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee, where she wowed judges and fellow contestants with her freehand cutting method. She now runs workshops across the UK and also writes a blog where she offers tutorials on freehand cutting projects. She keeps her Twitter and Instagram accounts abuzz with exciting fashion-related projects: @chinelobally

The Old City - Dubrovnik is not built in a way to be admired from the car or coach. This is a place for pedestrians. Every spot and hidden corner has its own unique

cuisine and excellent steaks which would do credit to the finest Argentine restaurants. In compliance with the wishes and adventurous way of life of younger visitors, fast food restaurants, pizzerias and small restaurants serve simple Dalmatian food and dishes of other cuisines.

Wine was highly valued in the Dubrovnik Republic, when dessert wines were sold on prescription as medicine. The best-known wines of the Dubrovnik region include red wines of the Pelješac Peninsula, the Plavac Mali variety, white wines - Pošip from

In its squares Dubrovnik offers souvenirs made by the traditional craftsmen who are encouraged and co-financed by the City authorities, such as goldsmiths/filigreemakers, shoe-makers, barbers and leatherworkers. Those who look for elegant and selected designer clothing, ultramodern glasses, Swarovski crystal and hand-made jewellery should visit the stores of Escada, Max Mara, Maria, Borza Group, and Đardin both in the Old City and in the shopping centres situated in the new part of Dubrovnik.

FESTIVALS / EVENTS If you’re visiting in December, the Christmas markets are a must, along with enjoying the traditional street caroling. A street carnival, masked balls and religious ceremonies are held in February for the day of the Patron Saint, St. Blaise and to celebrate Easter, the Dubrovnik Tourist Board spreads out Easter eggs for tourists on the main street and an Easter Fair is organized. Dubrovnik Summer Festival is one of the most prestigious events which sees the city’s palaces, churches and squares transformed into unique stages for dramas and concerts.

SPORT & LEISURE Dubrovnik is a perfect place for those who seek challenges and enjoy an active holiday and entertainment, recreation and sports are available throughout the year. Experience a jeep safari, horse-back ride, hiking and cycling in Konavle valley, a canoe safari, canoe tour on the sea, sail to the Elaphiti Islands or visit a National Park on Mljet Island. 82

GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT If you wish to experience how a nation really lives, you should go to the market place, the very stomach of the city, and smell, touch and taste the food which people consume every day. Even the finest chefs who visit Dubrovnik and prepare international dishes in some of the city restaurants cannot resist the taste of courgettes from Župa Dubrovacka, cabbage from Konavle and aubergines and tomatoes grown in the fertile and unpolluted surroundings of Dubrovnik. The gastronomy of an area is based on the fruits which grow on ecologicallypreserved land, as is still the case with that in the Dubrovnik environs. The delicacies of Dubrovnik are plain and without many spices. Prepared in a simple way, they are seasoned with plenty of olive oil, which accentuates the juicy taste of natural foods. The gastronomic choice on offer at the Dubrovnik restaurants is heterogeneous, varied and in compliance with the guests wishes. Those visiting local taverns wish to taste authentic national food, good smoked ham, cheese kept in oil, octopus salad, zelena menestra (smoked meat and cabbage stew), sporchi macaroni, fried sprats and grilled sardines.Visitors to top class restaurants, on the other hand, are served the freshest fish from Adriatic depths, shellfish from the unpolluted sea and other delicacies prepared to meet the requests of the choosiest gourmands. Restaurants also serve the popular sushi, which has become an integral part of western cuisine. In the attractive ambience of the Dubrovnik restaurants one can also enjoy French Anton_Ivanov / Shutterstock.com

DUBROVNIK WITH CHILDREN If you have decided to spend your holiday in Dubrovnik with children we recommend you choose your accommodation first. Dubrovnik offers high quality hotels and private accommodation with a range of prices. Depending on your budget, at the price of several hundred kunas per day you can stay in one of the private apartments or at a 3-star hotel, while 4 and 5-star hotels also offer special discounts for children. We recommend accommodation in the areas of Lapad and Babin Kuk, where you can spend a lot of time in the open air, walk by the sea and along the beaches. Go for a stroll in the Bay of Lapad, take coffee, eat ice-cream, pancakes and pizza, and let your children run free on the beach or play in nearby places with various programmes for children. King Zvonimir Promenade in the Bay of Lapad is a pedestrian zone. A walking path by the sea connects it with the green areas in Babin Kuk ideal for playing ball, riding a bicycle, table-tennis and minigolf in the open air. Babin Kuk is just a short walk away from Copacabana Beach, located on the opposite side of the peninsula, where you can rest over coffee and fruit juice, while your children run along the beach and throw pebbles into the sea.

City Café, Snack Bar or Cele Bar while watching your children play at ease with the Dubrovnik kids in front of St Blaises Church. A ten-minute boat ride from the Old City harbour will take you to the nearby Island of Lokrum. This half-day excursion offers swimming in the Dead Sea, walks in the groves with peacocks and exotic rare plants in the botanical garden. Spend a day in Medena Valley on Bosanka above Dubrovnik.Your children may enjoy fresh air, riding ponies and meeting other domestic animals in this small children’s kingdom. If you decide to stay longer, do not miss a visit to Konavle and enjoy horseback riding. On your departure, before your plane takes off, make sure to visit Đurovic Cave situated under the runway at the Dubrovnik Airport. If you come to Dubrovnik in summer, you can do all this after a day spent on the Dubrovnik beaches swimming in the crystal clear sea. If you get bored with your hotel beach, take a whole day excursion to the sandy beaches on the Elafite Islands and in Slano, and pebble beaches in Brsecine and Srebreno. The sea and sun will improve your health in the forthcoming winter, and the photographs of your children swimming for the first time, diving, jumping into the sea, kayaking and pedalling will remind you of your memorable stay in Dubrovnik. Your children will certainly ask you: When are we going to Dubrovnik again?

Go to the city centre, visit the Aquarium, the Natural Science Museum and walk the city walls. Refresh yourselves with a cup of coffee, tea or fruit juice in front of the Fountain in Trsteno Arboretum

Beautiful Brugge By Rachel Carr of “This Is Carrt www.thisiscarr t.co.uk

A

t home, in Paderborn, I live an 8 hour drive away from my family and friends who reside in my home town of London.Yes, I could fly, but due to logistics to and from the airport on the continent, my husband and I often choose to get on the autobahn and head west to Calais, and then up to London from Dover. Recently, however, I had the brainwave to stop off for a couple of nights en route at Brugge. It was one of the best ideas I have ever had. I was overwhelmed by both the beauty and strength of the beer that Brugge provides. The idea to stop there was initially planted by the website www.voyageprive.co.uk. I had only ever used their website once before on an excellent trip to Marrakech, but always keep up to date with what they have offer. I would heartily recommend subscribing to their weekly emails as without it I would have missed the excellent offer for a NH hotel very near the centre of the quaint city of Brugge. The hotel itself, Hotel NH Brugge, was pretty hard to find fault with. It is situated on the West side of the city and just a very leisurely stroll from the main square or Grote Markt. The rooms were large and the beds, of which there were two doubles in each room, were incredibly comfortable.

The rest of our stay was punctuated with ticking off other Belgian grub (Moules and strong beer), whilst walking around the chocolate box picture streets. The town is simply stunning. It almost feels like a toy town at times; it is so quintessentially ‘perfect’. That being said, it is incredibly touristy and with those tourists come the high prices. It would be unfair to say that I ate badly during my stay, but

given the amount that we spent on food, I would have expected better. I did enjoy my Moules at the restaurant at Oud Brugge though, and the restaurants opposite our hotel on the square Het Zand were good value if you chose the set menus. The view, luckily, came for free. My photos try to capture the Medieval beauty of Brugge. I was cursed with overcast skies when we visited, which isn’t my usual first choice for snapping away, but that did little to detract from the town’s appeal. All of my pictures are available to buy on canvas or as an unframed or framed photograph print in varying sizes. A number of these snaps would look great as large wall art and I can offer discounts for multiple purchases. Please check out my website for more information.

Importantly though, for this dog owning ‘social’ drinker, the hotel staff bent the rules to allow my mini pointer to stay. Plus the bar had an ample choice of beer and wine. The buffet breakfast, another way I like to judge any hotel stays, was diverse with some local fare available, which meant Nutella waffles for the first meal of the day. And what is not to like about that?

SCOTLAND MILITARY CATCHMENT
