Slow Pace of Change

The more things seem to change, the more they stay the same, goes the cliché. How true that is depends on you.

Not all change is good change, and everyone knows that change simply for its own sake is just as foolish and potentially hazardous to a business of any size. While I imagine that Gen Z doesn’t understand the reference to “New” Coke, and that Betamax doesn’t even exist on their spectrum of nostalgic rediscovery, many of you reading are likely familiar with those cautionary tales. What separates those from the other successful tales from our economic past, are the decision makers who read the writing on the wall, and got out ahead of where things were going.

For two years now, I’ve heard the frequent refrain that the asphalt and road building industry, and construction in general, are resistant to change. They say that we are slow adopters, that we like to do things the way they’ve always been done. I’ve heard that in the form of private conversations and all the way up to the podiums of various NAPA functions. Some of it is partially due to the close ties that our industry has to the government and its regulations on mixdesigns, quality control, labor, and materials.

While these sayings may have been true, I believe that this industry is ripe and ready for a massive wave of change. The conditions are coming together for a new paradigm in the way of doing things, and it’s coming from the place these things usually do: the next generation. I’ve seen it first hand. Recently, I had the chance to travel to New Jersey and visit a vocational trade school there called Ocean County Vocational and Technical School. I was taken on a tour of their facility, allowed to interview some of their students, and then attended a county-wide job fair where hundred of kids from both traditional high school and other vocational programs were in attendance.

What I saw across all of this truly surprised and inspired me. The kids are alight. Despite growing up through a historic set of adverse circumstances, this generation wants to work; yes, contrary to what mainstream media and your angry friend on Facebook would have you believe. Not only do they want to work, but they want to make their mark. They don’t care so much about how things have been done, but how they can be done. They aren’t afraid of making mistakes, trying new technology, or about incorporating unfamiliar tools on the fly.

From the two dozen or so kids I spoke to, not a single one flippantly addressed their circumstances in the job market, and each took their futures seriously. They had a shockingly prescient grasp on the world that they are stepping into, and they see the power of their emerging role in it. When I spoke to the companies there looking for the future of their labor forces, the sentiment I took away was this: If you’re having trouble finding workers, maybe it’s time you started looking in new places.

Maybe the ad in the paper doesn’t work anymore. Maybe good employees aren’t just going to show up on your doorstep or call. I’m not sure that placing job listings online is as effective anymore. I don’t know if your county has something like the job fair that Ocean County does, but maybe you need to find out, get involved, and meet them where they’re at. They’re out there, and they’re hungry.

ADM MileMaker with Warm Mix Capability

ADM RAP Recycle System

Improve the cost efficiency of your plant and boost RAP utilization with the ADM Recycle System.

CMI Pulse-Jet Baghouse

The pulse jet baghouses can provide better bag cleaning due to “pulse” of compressed air that is applied to cause the bag to ripple down its length. CMI BH30R baghouses feature a large filtration area with high air volume and high filtration. The hopper and upper house is constructed using alternating U-shaped steel plates creating 3 in. (76mm) x 5 in. (127mm) tubular stiffeners which are integral to the house structure, hopper and clean air plenum manufactured using 3/16 in. (4.76mm) mild steel.

Stansteel Accu-Shear Inline Blending

Foamed asphalt is manufactured by the introduction of precisely metered water into the flow of liquid asphalt between the A.C. pump, meter and the plants mixing zone. The water, when introduced into the A.C. immediately turns into steam gas which expands the volume of the liquids. The shear unit and the mixing action that takes place with the application of horsepower are similar to an emulsion process. The foamed asphalt more completely coats all aggregates, RAP, RAS, -200 or other materials. By positively blending the additives with the liquid asphalt, the foaming action is dramatically increased. More importantly, the fusion is maintained for a longer period. The benefits of warm mix asphalt, such as reduced energy consumption and lowered emissions are well-known in the asphalt paving industry and the latest generation of the Astec warm mix system simplifies production of warm mix asphalt. The Astec warm mix system achieves a lower temperature at a lower cost by eliminating the need for additives or special asphalt cement. Instead, the Astec warm mix system injects a small amount of water into the liquid AC to create microscopic steam bubbles. These small bubbles act to reduce the viscosity of the liquid AC, allowing the mix to be worked at lower temperatures.

The vibrating screen is now primarily manufactured with vibration-resistant lockbolts instead of the traditional welding used in previous designs. The Axenox screed plate design is a significant departure from industry standard. Whereas traditional plates are flat, these plates utilize a 3D angular design. This added dimension delivers lateral compaction confinement to asphalt material. The new Caterpillar RM600 and RM800 reclaimer/stabilizers compete at the high end of the reclaimer/stabilizer size class with an all-new adjustable height design capable of cross-slope cutting. Their turbocharged Cat C18 engine gives the RM600 up to 17% more power than the RM500B. The RM800 delivers up to 42% more power than the RM500B and up to 23% more power than the RM600. The all-rounder of the WR series provides a wide range of applications. With a working width of 7 ft., 10 in. (2.40 m) and a maximum working depth of 20.1 in. (510 mm), the recycler is highly flexible when it comes to operations in soil stabilising and cold recycling. Thanks to its high performance levels in milling and mixing and its variable mixing chamber, consistent and homogeneous mixing results can be achieved. When it comes to soil stabilizing, the ideal performance range is between 40,000 to 85,000 ft² a day (4,000 and 8,000 m²/day).
