Get Back to Basics with Training

Committing to opportunities that help grow and better your workforce is an investment in your business

W

e talk about training a lot in the construction industry. Business owners know that it's important, yet they continue to put this topic on the back-burner for their business and their employees. The most successfully construction business owners know that in order to properly engage employees, they need to focus on work tasks that lead to increased employee job satisfaction, lower turnover and improved performance. This usually includes sending your crew to on-the-job training events. Those construction contractors who are most successful view training as a necessary and beneficial investment in their business and point to numerous reasons why the investment is worthwhile: • Improves safety – They acknowledge that the safety of their workers is critical. The right training can ensure that the equipment is operated correctly and that safety practices are being followed. • Improves productivity – It is proven that well-trained employees are more confident in their abilities to perform their work. The right training gives workers the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their work to the best of their ability, increasing productivity and quality of the results. • Keeps current with technology – The pace of technology changes and advancements in construction come fast and furious. Regular training means the business and employees don’t get left behind and they stay working at their best, both today and in the future.

8

Published by AC Business Media

• Attracts and retains key employees – In today’s market, contractors cannot afford to hire or carry workers who are not competent or are firmly on a path to proficiency. Training and development programs not only attract workers, they can engage current employees and keep them committed to the company. • Gives company and workers the edge – Training employees can provide a genuine competitive advantage over competition. The only way to be better than competitors is by employees being better than the rest and training is a direct route to achieving this. • Helps you get the most out of your investments – Not only will training engage your employees, it will also help ensure you're getting the most out of the equipment you're using. Manufacturer training can help with this. IN-PERSON TRAINING EVENTS Operators know that to really learn how to run a piece of machinery, you have to get your hands on them. Manufacturers know that in order for their equipment to be used the way it was designed, they need to show operators how to use it in person. While some manufacturers may be canceling or postponing their training, other companies are moving ahead with their training courses, making sure to follow all CDC recommended guidelines. You can head to page 16 to see all in-person training opportunities happening over the next year. As the labor market continues to tighten, companies will need to sharpen their recruiting, hiring and training capabilities. Stay committed.

CONNECTING THE

DOTS:

How Data Improves Work Zone Safety Connected vehicle data enables the Indiana Department of Transportation to have better visibility to issues that may arise on their roadways

A

ccording to the Center for Disease Control, there are more than 750 deaths a year resulting from work zone crashes. These crashes involve both the traveling public and construction workers. Fathers, mothers, siblings, friends.

10

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR OCTOBER 2021

ACON1021_10-15_Technology_JD.indd 10

Making the tragedy worse is the fact that many of these crashes are avoidable. Speed and distraction are the main causes of work zone crashes and many companies are seeking ways to help asset managers better understand their work zones with data.

At the heart of this research is connected vehicle data (CVD) and companies like Wejo who are helping project owners leverage the power of connected vehicle data to better prepare construction work zones and help ensure optimal safety.

"There can be up to 1,000 sensors on a newer vehicle that can give you different insights," Stephanie Ayres, SVP of Enterprise & Channel Partnerships at Wejo says. "Insight you can gain can be anything from traffic trends to help understand congestion, all the way through to windshield wiper speed. This can offer insight into how localized weather can effect driving behavior and traffic build-up." In an effort to both improve safety and future-proof their infrastructure investments, the Indiana DOT (INDOT) partnered with Purdue University and the team at Wejo to advance their understanding of how connected vehicle data could make their roadways safer.

www.ForConstructionPros.com/Asphalt

ACON1021_10-15_Technology_JD.indd 11

FUTURE-PROOFING ROAD ASSETS One of the goals of the team at INDOT is incorporating 21st century technology into their long term road plans. By using CVD, like the data Wejo provides, INDOT is able to better manage their road assets. On the simplest level, INDOT is using the data Wejo provides to stay updated on the condition of their roads. "Let's say for instance, that there is a pothole, and we have motorists that are swerving around these potholes, you have to think that is a safety issue," Pam Fisher, director of economic development for the INDOT says. "If we're able to identify that there is some sort of road condition that is causing motorists to behave in ways other than the ways that we want them to behave, that's something that we need to know now. At the State DOT level, we may not know that for weeks or months until somebody calls or until there's an accident. But with Wejo, here's an example of how we can implement technology to immediately address an issue and prevent them from causing accidents" They also are able to use the data to better plan their road maintenance activities. "This information allows us to almost inventory our roads and understand what improvements we will be required to make based on this data," Fisher says. "Can we use this data to help us determine what types of improvements we would need to make to prepare for this 21st century technology such as autonomous vehicles." INDOT uses the data to find road assets that are in need of repair and that may have inconsistent road markings. "If this is all information that can be provided back to us, that's information we can use to enhance future improvements on our roadways," Fisher says.

CUTTING WORK ZONE INCIDENTS IN HALF INDOT wanted to take the use of this data one step further and deploy resources to their work zones. The team partnered with Purdue University and studied the why and how behind the accidents that were occurring near work zones. They analyzed accident reports and used vehicle movement insights to understand when hard braking events were happening. Through data analysis, the team quickly uncovered a strong correlation between accidents and hard braking events. Once Purdue and INDOT came to understand that hard braking could be used as a surrogate measure of safety near a work zone, it was time to start monitoring where hard braking events were happening. CVD enabled INDOT to look at hard braking events in near real-time – seeing trends in hours or days, instead of the weeks or months that it used to take to understand traffic patterns using roadside cameras. "That real-time data is important," Fisher says. "If we have issues with work zone safety, and we have to send crews out to identify that, obviously, we're targeting those resources to go and deal with that issue. But then imagine if we're able to use the technology that Wejo provides to us, where they're giving us real-time, information about the condition of our roads. Through that use of technology, we can deploy our workforce in other directions while at the same time having a significant improvement in safety on our roads. This is all because we're dealing with real-time information rather than intel that is possibly several hours old before we actually were able to get boots on the ground." Wejo’s connected car data is able to show where hard braking events were happening, at which mile marker,

OCTOBER 2021 ASPHALT CONTRACTOR

TECHNOLOGY MATTERS

Wejo

at which times of day and proximity to the work zone itself. The team identified that the hard braking events were happening because of the “queue," or the line of vehicles slowed or stopped due to a construction zone. These lines in many cases were backing up far from where the actual work zone and cautionary signage was located, meaning drivers were not expecting a slowdown when they hit the queue. The team then concluded that hard braking events could potentially be avoided by implementing advanced warning vehicles upstream from the queue. Purdue and INDOT used CVD to triage where the most important locations across the state were for new queue trucks and to determine the proximity to the back of the queue they should be deployed.

12

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR OCTOBER 2021

ACON1021_10-15_Technology_JD.indd 12

"Pre-Wejo technology, we would actually have to wait for there to be an incident before we were able to send a crew out to investigate because we were not aware in real-time about that incident," Fisher says. "Now, we have technology that we're able to understand in real-time there is something going on that's causing traffic to back up on an interstate. We understand that backup queue crashes increase the likelihood of either an accident or a fatal accident. Now, we can send our crews out immediately and address those issues before we have an accident or a fatality" After initial deployment, it was critical for Purdue and INDOT to measure if the mitigation efforts were successful in decreasing hard braking events. Wejo says they analyzed activity in two separate work zones – one with a queue truck positioned using CVD

and one without. The number of hard breaking events in the work zone with the queue truck was significantly less than the area without it. Using CVD reduced the number of hard braking events by more than half. The analysis from Purdue and INDOT suggests that cutting hard braking events in half could reduce crashes by 50 percent, meaning a dramatic decrease in injury and fatalities near work zones. "This data is just crucial for improving and enhancing safety on our interstates, now and well into the future," Fisher adds.

hey say that the devil is in the details. For a company that has been around since 1923 and employs over 700 employees, E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. has a lot of details to deal with every day. The familyoperated company based in Atlanta, GA performs a variety of transportation construction jobs from Augusta to Macon and into northern Georgia including roadway work, structural bridge work, and asphalt paving and sales. On any given summer day, E.R. Snell is dispatching 150 to 200 asphalt trucks, a vast majority of which are third party truckers. In handling their daily trucking, executive vice president Jared Snell knew there had to be a better way to manage the mountain of details that impact his company’s operations. Thankfully, he was right, and in an innovative telematics platform, they found a way to handle the details and exorcise their demons.

FACT-BASED DECISIONS REPLACE INTUITION The E.R. Snell team is very familiar with I-285. Whether it’s northbound or southbound, the team has resurfaced stretches of the interstate from the South Carolina border through Atlanta. The asphalt team was working on one particular three mile, four to six lane wide, stretch of I-285 at Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport when their telematics system helped them make sense out of the onslaught of

PRODUCTION NOTES information involved in the 100,000 ton, four-month project. An immediate way Snell and his managers cut through the noise was to eliminate over-trucking in real-time. In previous highway projects the team deferred to superintendents and foremen for their opinions on the trucking needs for a particular job. In hindsight, both parties tended to overestimate the amount of trucks needed. Thanks to their FleetWatcher telematics system, E.R. Snell was able to see where trucks were at all times, eliminate the grouping and generally keep a steady stream from the asphalt plant to the paver. Avoiding the guesswork allowed them to eliminate several trucks a day to get the right

number of trucks on the job. “This past year, what we found by using FleetWatcher is that we were able to quickly identify shortfalls,” Snell says. “Our managers were able to understand if they’ve got delays or if they’ve got problems, where trucks are and what they’re doing.” E.R. Snell also wanted to know where their trucks were supposed to be. Before telematics, trucks would take millings, valued between $60 $100 for use in future mixes and make unauthorized stops to sell them. Now armed with more information, the E.R. Snell team had a direct line of sight into where all of their trucks were in the field in real-time.

ACCOUNTABILITY HELPS EFFICIENCY For Snell, this information created accountability with drivers. “It’s the accountability of the trucks now that we have,” Snell says. “That was what we purchased FleetWatche for, to verify what we were spending was right.” With new insight into their trucking operations through FleetWatcher’s Material Management Solution (MMS), E.R. Snell reduced unauthorized driver stops and quickly identified other problems that weren’t even on their radar. After watching their trucking costs rise year after year, Snell was relieved to see them drop and eventually stabilize after implementing FleetWatcher. Telematics software gives E.R. Snell the ability to know when trucks of material will arrive to the paver, avoiding the guesswork involved in deciding the number of trucks needed each day.

In an industry focused on manufacturing powerful equipment, our business remains decidedly human thanks to one simple belief: that our greatest achievement as a company is in mastering the art of connection. Astec helps build the infrastructure that physically connects the world, but the connections we build with people are what make us a true partner to the industry. We know the equipment we build is not our final product, because we’re not really in the business of building equipment. We’re in the business of building connections.

PRODUCTION NOTES Using technology, E.R. Snell is able to gain company-wide visibility into their trucking performance metrics each day.

A large reason for the decline in costs came from how E.R. Snell pays their third-party truckers. Before having a handle on their trucking, the company was paying trucks by the ton to encourage efficiency. Unfortunately, E.R. Snell didn’t have an efficient way to track and identify why some trucks got five loads a night while others got two. To make matters worse, all the trucks ended up getting paid the same and high demand drove up costs across the board. But armed with FleetWatcher, Snell and his team were able to ensure when they came back to I-285, trucks were being paid for their exact tonnage and not a pound more. When on-boarding their third-party drivers, Snell was pleasantly surprised by the response to FleetWatcher. The drivers embraced the new technology not as a big-brother tool looming over their shoulder, but as a tool to help them logistically, while saving money in the trucking process. Plus, a streamlined implementation process didn’t scare anyone away. E.R. Snell also found a way to use their MMS to streamline their thirdparty trucking. Prior to FleetWatcher, truck dispatching was handled by texts and phone calls which was not ideal for anyone involved. Now, E.R. Snell issues FleetWatcher devices directly to their third-party vendors who then distribute them to trucks. Then they use the FleetWatcher tracking numbers, instead of the truck number at plants to ensure that they are getting, and paying

36

for, the trucks that they requested. Additionally this system allows E.R. Snell to always know who a truck is working for and where exactly they can be reached.

to sync up job master information into project creation and updates within FleetWatcher. Being able to utilize their trucking information seamlessly across the organization was yet another unforeseen benefit of switching their MMS.

UNINTENDED OUTCOMES SWEETEN THE POT More efficient trucking was an intended outcome of E.R. Snell’s investment in MMS. Company-wide visibility into trucking performance metrics, was not. The information is displayed on large screens with intuitive graphics at the asphalt plants, and on smaller screens like tablets and smartphones through the app. “I’d say the value add that we got that I didn’t see coming was the managers use of the app,” Snell says. “They have found it from the foreman, up through the project manager, and even through the executive level. The use of the app has been invaluable for logistics and just, overall, a dashboard view of what’s going on during the day.” FleetWatcher’s mobile app continuously relays information from GPS-enabled transponders in trucks to computer screens in offices and mobile phones or tablets out in the field. The increased visibility, along with an integration with E.R. Snell’s asphalt plant software, allows everyone in the company to have a dashboard view of what the plant is doing and where trucks are at any given time. In addition to integrating with their plant software, E.R. Snell also integrated with their accounting system, Viewpoint,

E-TICKETING ELIMINATES HANDOFFS DURING PANDEMIC FleetWatcher has helped shore up E.R. Snell’s trucking operations in the present while preparing them for the future. During the COVID-19 pandemic, E.R. Snell was able to use FleetWatcher’s e-ticketing software on one of their interstate resurfacing jobs to reduce the number of materials passed from hand to hand during a project. While e-ticketing isn’t a constant across all jobsites, should the Department of Transportation require it on future jobs, Snell and his team will be ready. Empowered by their new telematics system, the team at E.R. Snell were able to create efficiencies in their trucking operations. Real-time data allowed them to save money by creating accountability with their third-party truckers and increased access to operational information across the company.

How Operator Training Impacts

good paving job will have a smooth, dense appearance that looks flat and tight, without any gaps between the aggregates at the surface. We all know that appearance doesn't just happen, there are a lot of factors that affect mat quality. The paver operator, the asphalt mixture, even the distance from the asphalt plant to the jobsite all play a role in

40

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR OCTOBER 2021

ACON1021_40-47_JobsiteRollers_JD.indd 40

achieving optimum mat density. But the last people to touch the pavement are the roller operators. They have the greatest influence on smoothness, and those all important density numbers. "Roller operators need to understand their important role in the paving process, as compaction is the last step in laying down a quality pavement," Eric Booth, product training and marketing manager at Sakai says. "They need to be observant in order to monitor their machine … watching asphalt temperature, water tank level, DEF tank level, status of the DPF, and if any asphalt is being picked up by the drums, etc. The

plant, milling machine and paver can do everything correct, but if the roller isn’t on the mat at the right time or not maintained correctly, they could get density issues that lead to early failures and potentially impact any guarantees the contractor may have made." TRAIN FOR SUCCESS For asphalt contractors to be successful in today’s competitive paving market, paver and roller operators must acquire a deep knowledge of the equipment’s features and put this knowledge into practice at the job site. With long-time equipment operators retiring at a high

rate, the next generation of operators must receive extensive in-depth training on the equipment. This will help companies meet project specifications without costly rework while also maximizing their equipment return on investment. "Untrained personnel can cause not only bad/inadequate/undesirable results in the compacted surface, but could also be a danger at the jobsite potentially causing damage to the equipment or worse, cause harm to other personnel," Bert Erdmann, product manager compaction & assisted systems at BOMAG

Americas says. "Untrained roller operators potentially could cause undesirable results or permanently damage the material." Over- and under-compaction of the asphalt are common mistakes operators can make which can adversely impact the final product. "Under-compaction would most likely result in inadequate densities, which could potentially result in fines or rework, depending on what the job specification requires," Erdman says. "Over-compaction often results in breaking the aggregate which would ultimately lead to premature failure, e.g.

when water can enter the asphalt layer and freezing conditions cause the mat to fail, this can lead to potholes." Operators need to find the right balance between these two extremes in order to successfully achieve optimal compaction. To do so, they must be properly trained on the machines they operate each day.. "Roller operators are often “on their own” on the job to work with the quality control personnel who are measuring density using a nuclear or non-nuclear gauge, so it is important that operators are properly trained to understand the effects of changing

Set The Stage When teaching your operators proper rolling techniques, keep these tips in mind: • Maintain proper speed - Roller speed has one of the greatest influences on mat quality. Driving too slow can over compact the surface; driving too fast can leave gaps and compromise safety if the operator gets too close to the paver. Using the correct speed will also help to maintain the appropriate impact spacing to prevent washboarding. For most jobs, correct spacing is between 10 and 14 impacts per foot. • Monitor mat temperature - Typically, asphalt comes out of the plant at about 300° F. At that temperature, it is relatively viscous and liquid and is readily compacted. As it cools, it firms up and compaction becomes increasingly difficult. At about 100° to 150° F, it has cooled enough that the aggregates no longer move. A good operator will understand the temperature range they must work within and adapt accordingly. • Know when to use vibratory and static modes - Vibratory compaction creates shock waves that compact from the bottom up, while static compaction works from the top down. Most manufacturers will recommend that you roll in vibratory mode right out of the gate. For most jobs, you will use a combination of compaction modes, starting with vibratory compaction and finishing with static. With vibration, you’re getting the desired density, and with static you’re finalizing the compaction. • Select the right amplitude - Generally, amplitude settings are determined by the depth of the lift. Machines with variable amplitudes allow the operator to fine tune the setting to the mix. Lower amplitude settings are recommended for lifts of 2-in. or less; higher amplitude settings should be used for deeper lifts. • Avoid sharp turns or sudden speed changes - Sharp turns can tear the mat and decelerating/accelerating quickly can rip/tear the mat or leave indentations.

42

amplitude and frequency on a steel drum roller and how these changes affect the ability to reach density, maintain smoothness and a roller speed to keep up with the paver," Todd Mansell, product application specialist with Caterpillar, Inc. says. "Roller operator training is a three-pronged relationship between amplitude, frequency and impacts per foot, or roller speed, on a steel drum roller. Operators should always try to maintain a minimum of 10 impacts per foot to achieve density efficiently, but equally important, to meet or exceed smoothness specifications for IRI.” Mansell says the simple calculation is to take roller frequency setting and divide by 10. "For example, the roller set on high frequency at 3,800 vpm divided by 10 = 380 feet per minute should be the maximum ground speed of the roller. 380 / 88 = 4.3 mph. Most rollers on the market today have a gauge indicating the impacts per foot, so the roller does the calculation for the operator automatically, based on the frequency setting." The operator should be trained to understand this relationship between impacts per foot and roller speed as it is critical to maintaining smoothness on a job. TRAIN FOR OPTIMIZED MACHINE USE To best achieve this, operators should be trained and given the knowledge to overcome some of the hurdles that can crop up on a project, such as difficult weather conditions, clumpy mixes, extremely thick or thin lifts, joining of hot and cold lanes, etc. Training will also help ensure the machines are being used to their fullest potential. Most roller manufacturers, in conjunction with their dealers, offer training for end users of their equipment. That training is available in a variety of forms, including group seminars, hands-on courses or one-onone training on the jobsite or at the manufacturer's training grounds.

"Operators not only need to understand these relationships between amplitude, frequency and impacts per foot mentioned above, they must understand how to change these settings on the roller they are operating," Mansell says. "This sounds simple,

but all manufacturers have different methods and combinations of how to change amplitude and frequency. Some changes are made by switches at the operator’s station, while other changes are made on the drum itself and further, a combination of the two. Understanding how to make these changes is not always intuitive if you have not been properly trained. It can be very challenging for operators, especially when they are on different rollers from day to day and job to job. All manufacturers offer charts and “cheat sheets” on how to change these roller settings. Ask for these guides and stick them on the roller somewhere Roller operators need to be properly trained to understand the effects of changing amplitude and frequency on a steel drum roller and how these changes affect the ability to reach density, maintain smoothness and roller speed to keep up with the paver. obvious for the operator to review and laminate them to make them weatherproof." Don't forget to also teach safety best practices to your operators. "Operators should know the functionality and proper use of the controls on the roller, proper rolling techniques and best practices/commonly applied rolling patterns and proper use of water (just enough to keep material from sticking, but not too much so that the asphalt mat does not cool down too fast)," Erdman adds. TRAIN ON TECHNOLOGY TO SIMPLIFY OPERATIONS Manufacturers of equipment have been hard at work trying to simplify and standardize many operations, including compaction. The main technologies that are available to help operators achieve optimal compaction are pass count mapping and temperature mapping, often collectively referred to as “Intelligent Compaction.” "Intelligent Compaction often includes some type of stiffnessmeasuring instrument, most commonly an accelerometer mounted near the

drum of the roller to give an indication of material stiffness by measuring the rebound of the steel drum during the compaction process," Mansell says. "The most valuable and useful tools for operators today are pass count mapping that keeps track of the number and location of roller passes and displays it to the operator in real-time during the rolling operation and the temperature mapping that helps operators stay in the proper temperature range, or zone, for optimal compaction." BOMAG ECONOMIZER provides a stiffness gauge to the operator with direct “traffic-light-type” feedback of the current status of compaction. More sophisticated systems such as ASPHALT MANAGER take it up a notch by

46

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR OCTOBER 2021

reducing the drum output automatically to prevent over-compaction. "BOMAG’s BOMAP Connect is the next evolution in Intelligent Compaction," Erdman says. “BOMAP Connect is a subscription-based cloud solution, connecting the BOMAP app with the ability to plan, track and document multiple compaction projects. BOMAP equipped rollers can effectively “see” each other and the projects and data exchanged with the ability to connect multiple rollers with each other on the jobsite to provide a visual compaction map. The operator and machine, the supervisor on the jobsite and even your project manager back at the office have instant connection to your job’s compaction status."

Having visibility like this helps ensure operators have real-time information on their compaction efforts so they can make adjustments accordingly to avoid mistakes. "Roller operators are the last ones on the mat, so they normally are first to be blamed if something goes wrong," Tim Kowalski, HAMM application support manager at Wirtgen America says. "Technology today is much more sophisticated and designed to assist operators with consistency of operations while also ensuring they are doing the job correctly." Intelligent compaction technology has been instrumental in helping contractors understand and better manage their density. Manufacturers

have worked to make the data visible and easily accessible while the machine is in use. "Intelligent compaction on HAMM rollers features color-coded pass mapping," Kowalski says. "Operators can tell the number of passes they have completed and where they have already been on the mat so they know what areas have already achieved compaction. They can also tell where to stop and start on the mat which is especially helpful during night work." Other technologies are also available to help operators achieve their smoothness goals. "There are a number of technologies to aid the roller operator in getting density, some being more hi-tech than others," Booth says. "Sakai offers an Exact Compact Meter to show the operator which speed gives them the appropriate impacts per foot. Rollers that utilize oscillation can hit density and smoothness in no vibration areas. Though density is goal #1, the compaction crew can’t forget about smoothness or roller efficiencies either. More states are setting smoothness requirements as part of the specifications, and getting density and smoothness in as few passes as possible is important." Both the technology and best practices for the construction of asphalt pavements are constantly changing. Be sure to stay on top of training your operators to ensure your efforts will be successful. "Training should be a never ending process," Kowalksi concludes. "As manufacturers, we want to make sure companies are getting the most out of the equipment. We want to train operators, foreman, superintendents and even the owners on these machines and what they are designed to help with."

Signs Your Trailer Needs to be Repaired

KM.Photo @adobe.stock.com

A trailer in need of repair can be dangerous for you, your business and those on the road with you. It’s a good idea to know the signs that your trailer needs repair before it’s too late

O

wning a trailer comes with plenty of benefits, whether you use it for work to haul your equipment to and from jobsites or for renting out to your customers. While trailers are great when you need them, they also require regular maintenance and occasional repairs. Without the proper maintenance, you may end up dealing with a costly trailer repair. KNOW WHEN TO GET YOUR TRAILER SERVICED A trailer in need of repair can be dangerous for you and those on the road with

you. It’s a good idea to know the signs that your trailer needs repair before it’s too late. Let’s take a look at some of the indicators for when your trailer needs to be repaired and some of the most common repairs you could end up dealing with.

Hard to Stop When it becomes difficult to stop your trailer, it’s time to check your braking system and axles for repair needs. If you suspect the brakes aren’t working or would just like to check them for some preventative maintenance, it’s a relatively easy task. First, lift the trailer up on jack stands. Then, whether they're electric or hydraulic brakes, pull the breakaway and try to spin the wheels. The wheels should be locked up. If the wheels can turn, then further diagnosis would be necessary. If the trailer is air brake equipped, it’s common to hear an audible air leak within

a braking system, but any issues you notice stopping the trailer need to be taken seriously. If you are still struggling to get your trailer to stop, it could also be a sign of a bent axle or another needed repair. Depending on how the trailer is acting, you may need to take off one of the tires to further investigate and discover the issue.

Faulty Lighting Just about every trailer comes equipped with lights and wiring, and sometimes it needs to be repaired. If the lights are flickering or not working, this can be a significant safety issue. You may be dealing with something as simple as a blown fuse, a loose connection or something as severe as faulty wiring or electrical shorts.

Tire Failure Tire maintenance is undoubtedly the most critical safety component on a vehicle. Where the rubber meets the road affects traction, handling, steering, stability and braking. Because of this, a sudden tire failure can have serious consequences, especially if it occurs at highway speeds. Many tires today are capable of going thousands of miles or more — provided they are properly installed, maintained, and inspected regularly. With proper care, tire maintenance and “normal” use, most tires will go the distance

without a problem. But sometimes tires fail. When the trailer starts to pull your vehicle to one side or another, you might have a tire issue. Before each tow, you should check your trailer’s tire pressure and inspect it for wear. During the inspection, you might notice a crack or bulge in one of the tires. If this is the case, it’s time to get your trailer tires checked out and changed before you end up stranded on the side of the road. Also, trailer tires may be worn out even though they have plenty of treads left. This is because trailer tires have to carry a lot of weight all the time, even when not in use. It's actually better for the tire to be rolling down the road than to be idle because during use, the tire releases lubricants that are beneficial to tire life. So, using the trailer tires

often also helps prevent flat spots from developing. But to do that requires proper maintenance. For starters, it is recommended to carry a tire pressure gauge in your tow vehicle. Secondly, pay attention to these key terms: Underinflation: Check your tire’s sidewall for recommended PSI (Max

6 Common Trailer Tire Questions Felling Trailers’ parts and service team field a lot of questions on parts and trailer repairs each day, with the most popular being about trailer tires. Here are the five most common trailer tire questions and the answers from Fellings’ Trailer Tires Parts & Service experts.

How long do trailer tires last?

Trailer tires can last three to four years or 10,000 to 12,000 miles. The tire life may vary depending on the tire’s quality, the type of roads and terrain it travels on, and the load weight that is being carried.

Can you put regular car tires on a trailer? Why?

No, regular car tires cannot be put in a trailer. This can be dangerous. Tire tread on car tires is different than the tread designed for trailers, which can cause irregular wear on the tire and will blow. Load ratings are also carefully chosen for car or truck tires and completely differ from trailer tires.

What is a “load range” on a trailer tire?

The load range is the load capacity of the trailer tire. A tire’s load range is located on the sidewall of the tire. The load range is rated with a single letter, such as B, C, D, etc. If you have two tires of the same size, but one with a load range of B and D, the D range tire will have a higher weight capacity. Keep in mind that going to a higher capacity tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer.

What is the difference between a passenger tire (P) vs. a trailer tire (ST)?

ST stands for “special trailer tire.” P or LT stands for “passenger” or “light truck” tire. Because of an ST tire’s heavier design, it is designated to carry more load than a P or LT tire. Tread patterns between the two are also specific to their applications. STs have an equal volume of air space, and LT tires are sometimes used on larger trailers due to their stiff sidewalls. As a rule of thumb though, you want to stick with ST trailer tires for your trailer. That’s what they are made for.

Do you need to balance your trailer tires?

or at the base of the tread grooves causing weather checking or ozone cracking. If this is observed, then it's time to start looking into replacing the tires. Lack of Maintenance: i.e. all of the above The most common trailer repair you will encounter will have to do with your tires, but beyond that, there are other common wear parts that will need to be repaired or replaced, such as: • Hub replacement • Bent axles • Repacking bearing • Wiring/lighting repair Anytime your trailer isn’t towing normal, you want to diagnose the problem. Sometimes, it’s as simple as inspecting the trailer and finding the issue. But you should always complete a pre-trip walk around before each use.

No, balancing your trailer tires is not necessary. Trailer tires are meant to support a load! You are more likely to feel an imbalance in your vehicle than a trailer. Trailer tires are designed to support the load that is carrying, not providing a smooth ride.

How do you prevent dry rot on trailer tires?

Dry rot happens when the tires sit in the sun over a long period of time. Covering your tires should prevent major dry rot issues. UV exposure and oxygen are the two major degradation factors for tires. Permissible Inflation Pressure). If tire pressure is lower than recommended PSI, take note of the difference between measured pressure and correct pressure, then add the missing pounds of air pressure to each tire that is underinflated. Overloaded: Check tire placard, know your capacities, and on the tire face is listed the Load Range as C, D, E, G, etc. The Load Range tells you what the weight capacity of your tire(s) is. Surpassing this limit can result in failure.

Potholes & Other Hazards: Hazards on the road can impact the internal structure of the tire and be the cause of a blowout in months to follow. Weather Checking: If a trailer sits stationary and is exposed to the environment for extended periods of time like weeks, months, etc., the tire’s surface can start to crack. This typically occurs on the sidewalls Felling Trailers

e all know that our roads will only be as strong as the bases they are built on; "Roads may wear from the top, but they fail from the bottom."

While we invest plenty of time and resources creating more resilient asphalt mixtures to help prevent wear from the top, we haven't focused too much on creating a stronger foundation for our roadways. If left untreated, cracks in asphalt lead to deterioration of the base structure beneath our roadways. Lithified Technologies developed a soil technology known as LithTec™ that mimics lithification, a natural process

that transforms soil into stone over thousands of years. The technology developed uses the same naturally occurring minerals and chemicals, along with accelerators, to make lithification occur in 24-48 hours. This "accelerated lithification" provides optimal strength for road infrastructure, enabling thoroughfares and highways to last much longer. "LithTec is all about building from the bottom up," Bob Sherwin, CEO at

th of Roadways Lithified Technologies says. "LithTec turns the road base or subgrade into a rock-hard and water resistant road foundation that remains bound and non-dispersive while under water. You would witness this with the two soil samples (one treated with LithTec and one untreated) submerged under water at the same time. The untreated proctor immediately will start disintegrating turning the water muddy and the cylinder will lose approximately half of

its original size in a very short time. The LithTec treated sample will remain rockhard and non-dispersive as no material will fall off and the water will remain clear." Keeping water out of the road base is a key objective and this technology aims to help with that. FULL DEPTH LITHIFICATION We have all heard of Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR), which is the process of

pulverizing all layers of existing asphalt pavements in place to depths of up to 20 inches. FDR has grown in popularity as equipment has evolved and recycling efforts have heightened. While the process is efficient in creating a structurally sound roadway at a fraction of the cost of remove and replace, it does not strengthen the existing road bed. Added stability can be achieved if the reclaimed base layer is chemically or mechanically stabilized. Chemical

stabilization introduces cement, lime, kiln dust, or emulsified asphalt to improve binding of the materials. As states and municipalities are continually trying to make their road investments last longer, Lithified Technologies has taken this process one step further using science to actually strengthen the road bed for good. LithTec produces both high strength and high ductility simultaneously. These qualities are all achieved through the “accelerated lithification” process, which decreases the porosity, increases the binding potential, is resistant to abrasion and ultimately turns soil into stone through a process they call Full Depth Lithification (FDL). This process can save 30-50% over traditional FDR. "Accelerated Lithification Technology is not considered to be a “soil stabilizer” at all, as the word itself implies that the product is trying to 'stabilize the soil.'” Sherwin says. "LithTec technology is not gluing the dirt together like a polymer or making it sticky like a lignin, molasses or tree sap which is simply a compaction aid, that washes out under rain and snow conditions. Instead, the LithTec process transforms the soil or road base material at the molecular level, turning it into a rockhard, water-resistant base with unprecedented load bearing capacity. This is the first product to achieve double the strength of cement and 3-4 times the ductility. The company spent over $15M and nine years in development to be able to prove this." Sherwin's company developed the dry blend of naturally occurring minerals that they now call LithTec. These materials firm up within a day after being mixed with and compacted into traditional road base materials at optimum moisture content. "LithTec transforms traditional untreated base course that averages 25,000 PSI Modulus into a "high-performance" road base that has 500,000 PSI Modulus," Sherwin says. "By increasing the road’s load bearing capacity by over 2,000%, road designers and engineers can transfer the “structural

www.ForConstructionPros.com/Asphalt

9/21/21 11:22 AM

credits” (the strength and load bearing capacity) normally found in the asphalt surface, into the LithTec treated base." As a result, the asphalt thickness may be reduced by as much as 67%. "Counties across the country have discovered that a LithTec treated road base with a chip seal surface will provide an asphalt performance road for approximately 25 cents on the dollar, compared to a traditional asphalt road," Sherwin says. "When you put the chip seal over the top of LithTec, it's the equivalent of putting it on top of asphalt, but in a much stronger and more economical way."

CUSTOM FORMULA PROVIDES LASTING RESULTS Due to the high volume of materials in road construction, Lithified Technologies knows that optimization is the key to the success of each project. To maximize the high performance potential of your roads, Lithified Technologies provides a "Value Engineer" package that includes customization of the LithTec product to meet the specific project needs. A trained "GeoTechnical" field operator is sent to each project to sample the project and determine variations so that the product can be customized based on the specific variables present in the road base. Testing in the lab, and then again in the field, is performed to ensure optimal results will be achieved. "From the very beginning of the process, our engineers will go out and pull soil samples from the project," Sherwin says. "They will do GPS mapping

of where the samples came from and bring them back to the lab where our technicians will perform a battery of 10 different tests on those samples. This is all a part of the customization process to determine which formula we need to get the optimal performance out of that material." When it's time for installation of the product, each custom formula is blended on-demand for each specific project. The blend the materials at one of their 19 locations across the country and ship it out the day before or the day of the project. The GeoTechs will again be on-site to perform quality control as well. "The field testing will make sure the material is hitting the same numbers in the field as we achieved in the lab," Sherwin says. "They make sure you're hitting your optimum moisture content, ensuring the proper depth is being met, the proper dosage is going down

down per the custom formula. The reclaimer then goes back through the material ensuring the material is at the pre-determined optimum moisture content. Compaction then occurs with a sheepsfoot roller, a grader then shapes the road and a flat wheel roller finishes out the compaction before the surface course is put down. PERPETUAL ROADWAYS & INFRASTRUCTURE PRESERVATION When you look at the challenges of the road building industry today, we are facing much higher amounts of traffic in much heavier loads as the shipping of goods has never been higher. These increased loads are taking their toll on our roads and highways and the industry must figure out how to build roadways that sustain these volumes. "We have 15 million 40-ton trucks on our highways and that number is growing by the day," Sherwin says. "DOT studies have said that each 40-ton truck has as much wear and tear on an asphalt highway as 10,000 automobiles." Building stronger foundations can be a key to longer-lasting roadways.

BUILT TO CONNECT

Connection is at the heart of everything we do The primary use for asphalt is creating pavement for building the roads that connect goods and services to their markets, people to their communities and families to each other. ASTEC asphalt plants are essential to building and maintaining these vital connections. That’s what drives us to design, manufacture, and sell innovative, efficient, and reliable equipment. And that’s what inspires us to connect to our customers through knowledgeable sales, receptive engineering and responsive parts and service.
