Will 2018 Prove to Be A Rebuilding Year?

Becky Schultz / bschultz@acbusinessmedia.com

A LOT OF THINGS WERE HAPPENing as 2017 was coming to a close: a major power outage stalled one of the world’s busiest airports in Atlanta; a serious train derailment rocked Washington state; yet another wildfire raged in California; and the Trump Administration celebrated its first major legislative win in the form of a business-friendly but controversial tax reform bill. Such events capped off

a tumultuous year that saw not one but three devastating hurricanes, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, heightened tensions with North Korea and ongoing drama throughout the nation’s Capital. Still, there were glimmers of hope and opportunity for the construction industry as we approached the threshold of a New Year. Of course, as is often the case, opportunity often comes with caveats and,

in this case, some pretty substantial political road blocks to surmount. The White House issued a statement last month that its advisers were putting the finishing touches on the administration’s highly anticipated, much-delayed infrastructure plan, which it expected to roll out sometime in January. At the plan’s core is $200 billion or more in direct federal spending, with the bulk of the promised $1 trillion investment made up by local governments and private funds. While some see the plan as a non-starter given its lack of support even among some members of Trump’s own party, animosity between the political factions, reluctance to tackle two major spending bills in one year and pending mid-term elections, there are others who believe there is sufficient support on both sides for increased investment to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure to stimulate some form of agreement. If so, it will likely happen leading up to the midterms to ensure each party has a legislative victory to promote to voters. If enacted early enough, some of the funding’s influ-

ence could even be felt in this calendar year, with the bulk of its effects extending into 2019 and beyond. Another promising development was a proposal by House Republicans for $81 billion in disaster relief for areas hit by hurricanes and wildfires. Nearly double what the White House requested, it is the largest standalone disaster aid bill proposed in recent years. While the proposal falls short of what the affected regions requested, if passed, the measure would provide a substantial boost to recovery and reconstruction efforts in affected areas. This presents further prospects for firms specializing in disaster recovery, as well as those seeking construction work in these regions. That said, there are risks to consider when seeking such work (see ForConstructionPros. com/20976634), plus rebuilding efforts are likely to drive up labor and material costs (see ForConstructionPros. com/20977208) and exacerbate an already serious worker shortage throughout the construction industry. Whether the proposals cited will actually come to pass is anyone’s guess at this early stage. But if 2017 is any indication, the wait to see what happens will prove far from boring... ET

State of the

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY 2 Economists from the leading construction associations share their outlook for general construction.

E

ach year, leading economists look into their “crystal balls” in an attempt to foresee what the New Year holds for the construction industry. For 2018, this proved a tougher task given key uncertainties clouding the outlook at year end, including the incomplete 2018 federal spending package and as yet enacted tax reform legislation (just passed at time of publication). Add in storm and wildfire recovery boosting construction demand, costs and labor woes (further compounded by immigration reform), then throw in the pending mid-term elections, and the future is cloudier still. That said, economists gave their best shot, and here is a

12  EQU IPMENT T ODAY | January 2018 ET0118_12-15_StateofIndustry_BC.indd 12

Q&A covering their outlook for the overall U.S. economy and general construction as we neared the close of 2017. Next month, industry experts will take a targeted look at the prospects for the transportation sector.

OVERALL ECONOMIC OUTLOOK What level of U.S. economic growth do you see for 2018? What are some key drivers that will impact growth either positively or negatively? Robert Dietz, senior vice president and chief economist, National Association of Home Builders (NAHB): NAHB sees continued modest yet positive growth prospects for 2018. We should continue

to grow, but at below 3% rates. Wage growth is increasing, which is good for consumer spending and housing demand, but is a concern for employers. The wild card for 2018 and 2019 is tax reform. Smart tax reform that rewards small business and promotes housing will contribute to growth. Tax reform that increases taxes on homeowners to reward investors, including foreign owners of U.S. assets, will be counterproductive. The tight labor market is a key limiting factor for overall economic growth. Increases for the labor force participation rate will help labor markets to continue to grow. However, absent those improvements, wage pressure could increase inflation and

cause the Fed to move somewhat faster than its current gradual pace of interest rate hikes.

Ed Sullivan, chief economist, Portland Cement Association (PCA):

We project GDP growth to be at 2.3% in 2018. We came off the worst recession since the Great Depression and there has been a tremendous pent-up demand. It takes time to fill this demand, and our growth has been slow. It will likely continue to be slow driven in part by millennials who are in debt, who are taking their time to start families and who currently don’t participate in the housing market. The recession also changed peoples’ behaviors. But people forget and eventually they will return to old spending habits, just as

S PECIAL REPORT

given rising inflationary pressures, whether in the form of wages, tuition, rent, medical care or fuel. Should interest rates rise with unanticipated rapidity due to these emerging pressures, elevated asset prices could become jeopardized, setting the stage for negative wealth effects. This means that while 2018 should be strong for the U.S. economy, there are few guarantees with respect to 2019 or 2020.

Y 2018

millennials will one day start families and buy homes.

Ken Simonson, chief economist, Associated General Contractors of America (AGC): The econo-

my should keep expanding at a moderate 2% to 2.5% rate, after inflation. However, this could be affected by big changes in tax and spending policy or by an international crisis.

Anirban Basu, chief economist, Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC): As we enter 2018, con-

sumer confidence is at a roughly 17-year high, unemployment is at a 17-year low, financial markets are surging, the global economy is improving and leading indicators suggest plentiful momentum during the year’s early months. It has been many

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION How strong was construction in the commercial and housing markets in 2017, and what level of growth do you expect to see in both segments for 2018? AGC: Single-family construc-

years since the U.S. economy entered the New Year with such momentum. Consumer spending will continue to be the leading engine of growth. But that will be supported by faster export growth as the world economy continues to heal, and by faster business spending growth, particularly if pending corporate tax cut legislation is passed. In short, the economic outlook for the U.S. in 2018 is quite good. There are abundant risks, however. One could argue that asset prices rose too fast and furiously in 2017. That could set the stage for significant asset price volatility in 2018. Stock and other prices can’t rise forever. This is particularly true

tion spending increased 9% through the first 10 months of 2017, about the same growth rate as in 2016. But multifamily construction really hit the brakes, slipping to a 4% growth. I think that in 2018, there will be a lot of rebuilding and renovations in areas of Texas, Florida and California devastated by hurricanes, flooding and wildfires. Meanwhile, multifamily building may dip after six years of generally torrid growth. ABC: There was a considerable volume of building construction in 2017. Leading segments included hotel, casino, office, distribution center and multifamily construction. There are many forces at work, including Millennial demographics, the e-commerce revolution, foreign investment into commercial real estate and growth both in consumer and business travel. One suspects that this momentum will stretch into 2018 since both domestic and foreign capital is on the hunt for investment opportunities that yield income. NAHB: On the demand side of the housing market, incoming household formation data show strength for the for-sale market and some softening for rental markets. These trends are consistent with demographic data that show a growing number of millennials entering their 30s. This process will continue to sustain demand for single-family homes in the years ahead. Single-family construction should continue along its modest growth trend (7%), while still being constrained by supply-side bottlenecks, including lack of labor and rising building

ForConstructionPros.com

ET0118_12-15_StateofIndustry_BC.indd 13

material prices. Nonetheless, builder confidence, as measured by the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, remains solid. Remodeling should also post gains given rising homeowner wealth and reduced homeowner mobility, which will increase the need for agingin-place and other kinds of structural improvements. Multifamily starts peaked in 2015, and NAHB expects a leveling off process to continue over the next few years. The decline in apartment starts in 2017 was steeper than expected, with a 10% 2017 decline expected. We forecast smaller but still negative growth rates over the near-term as rental vacancy rates increase, rent growth softens and housing demand momentum moves to the for-sale market segment. PCA: We anticipate modest growth throughout the building construction market in both the nonresidential and residential sectors. That should translate into a growth rate similar to 2017. Nonresidential is approaching a peak and there is slowing in sectors like industrial that are impacted by the macroeconomic environment. The single-family residential market should be fairly healthy in 2018. Gains, however, will be slowed by difficult application processes, lack of Millennial participation and modest increases in mortgage

rates that will impact affordability. The multifamily market still has strong potential, but it too is reaching its cyclical peak. Like 2017, next year will likely see 350,000 units built. The big surprise is the improvement and repair sector thanks unfortunately to two serious hurricanes and California wildfires. This sector saw strong percentage gains toward the end of 2017 and will continue to see these gains throughout 2018.

RAW MATERIAL COSTS Do you expect to see the costs of raw materials such as asphalt, cement, steel and lumber increase in 2018? If so, to what level and what is driving the increases? NAHB: We expect continued

gains in building material prices, particularly for lumber given tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber. Rising building material prices was the issue that increased the most as a concern in 2017. While still below the lack of labor and lots, prices for drywall, roofing materials and other building components increased in 2017 due to hurricane repair efforts and the broader growth of the housing market. We expect this pressure on prices to continue in 2018. ABC: The past year was associated with noteworthy increases in construction materials prices.

“We forecast smaller but still negative growth rates over the near-term [for multifamily starts] as rental vacancy rates increase, rent growth softens and housing demand momentum moves to the for-sale market segment.” — Robert Dietz, National Association of Home Builders

prices in many categories, which should translate into more gradual price increases in general. AGC: Materials costs ended a years-long slide in late 2016 and rose at a moderate rate in most of 2017. Those increases are likely to accelerate a bit further in 2018 as global demand picks up and construction continues to grow, albeit slowly and unevenly. I don’t foresee a return to the severe, widespread escalations and occasional shortages that cropped up before the last recession.

EMPLOYMENT AND LABOR COSTS

“Materials costs ended a yearslong slide in late 2016 and rose at a moderate rate in most of 2017. Those increases are likely to accelerate a bit further in 2018 as global demand picks up and construction continues to grow.” —Ken Simonson, Associated General Contractors of America After slumping for much of 2014 and virtually all of 2015, global commodity prices stabilized and then began to rise in 2016/17. A more contentious view on trade, including with respect to Canadian soft lumber, also served to elevate price pressures. During a recent 12-month period, softwood lumber prices surged 15%. Diesel fuel, natural gas, iron and steel and other prices also expanded for much of 2017. Given the expectation that the global economy will heat up even further in 2018, one would expect that materials prices will continue to rise. However, the rise in materials prices could be quite gradual. Quantity supplied is already responding to higher

14  EQU IPMENT T OD AY | January 2018 ET0118_12-15_StateofIndustry_BC.indd 14

In recent years, finding skilled and experienced workers has challenged many construction companies. In fact, for many, it has been their No. 1 impediment to growth. Do you foresee companies continuing to struggle with this trend in 2018? What impact, if any, will the administration’s stand on immigration have on the industry and finding workers? AGC: Finding capable workers

will remain the leading challenge for contractors in 2018. The job market is continuing to tighten after more than seven years of continuous job gains and everincreasing retirements of baby boomers. Restrictive immigration policies and stepped-up deportations are adding to the competition for workers and threaten to slow the growth in the overall economy as many industries struggle to fill openings or to replace the customers who are kept out of the country. NAHB: On the supply side of the construction market, we need additional gains in the labor force participation rate to allow employers to continue filling open jobs. The construction industry is in the middle of a labor shortage and data suggest it will not turn the corner quickly. Without growth in the size of the labor force, it will be difficult for the residential construction industry to continue adding workers at the current pace of a little more than 100,000 per year. Higher wages due to a tight labor market will bring in some additional workers, but will also increase cost pressures on employers. We could, of course, build and remodel more homes if we could add workers even faster. The

demand is there. The industry must recruit the next generation of construction workers. PCA: There is no easy fix to the labor challenge. Training programs for skilled workers are great, but they take time and we see companies struggling with labor for several years to come. The labor shortage will continue to be an impediment to company growth and immigration reform will only worsen the trend. Labor-saving technologies will alleviate some of this, but they can only go so far. ABC: The lack of skilled workers is apparent throughout the U.S. economy, whether in construction, trucking, healthcare, hospitality, cybersecurity or a host of other industry segments... The year 2018 will be yet another during which America’s low labor force participation rates will continue to hamstring businesses in many segments, including construction. A confluence of factors has led to these circumstances, including cultural shifts, shifts in educational philosophy, the atrophying of apprenticeship programs in much of the nation, and the ongoing large-scale retirement

of many of the most talented, skilled and experienced construction workers. The nation’s shifting stand on immigration will not help, with employers finding it increasingly challenging to secure both skilled and semi-skilled personnel. With respect to construction, the impact is to raise the cost of delivering construction services and to stretch out timetables. That makes it less likely that construction projects can move forward because this serves to reduce the predicted rate of return. The industry can only combat this by aggressively engaging educators and policymakers. Too few students are aware of middle-income opportunities in construction. The mantra has been college preparedness, particularly four-year college preparedness. That has deflected much talent away from construction — talent that often finds itself under-utilized upon graduation. Construction industry leaders must insist on more experiential learning in schools and more field trips. They must also offer more internships, and better support apprenticeship programs. ET

“The labor shortage will continue to be an impediment to company growth and immigration reform will only worsen the trend. Labor-saving technologies will alleviate some of this, but they can only go so far.” — Ed Sullivan, Portland Cement Association

nboard monitors on current generation excavators provide a wealth of information and capability that can increase productivity, reduce fuel consumption and enhance safety on the jobsite. The monitors often interface with modern electrohydraulic systems to provide semi-autonomous functions and customized capabilities that make novice operators more efficient while reducing fatigue in more experienced operators. There is a wealth of information at your fingertips. For instance, the monitors on Kobelco excavators allow you to monitor the machine’s hydraulic work mode, attachment flow and pressure settings, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level, real-time fuel consumption, fuel efficiency and machine surroundings, according to George Lumpkins, product marketing and developing general manager. Almost any information you might need is now available. “Entering the diagnostic mode is easy with one touch of a button as you start the machine,” says Lumpkins. “Approximately 200+ items of machine performance, parameters, read-outs, historical issues, engine functions and more can be accessed by sitting in the operator’s cab.” Similar to advancements in computers and smartphones, the advancement of machine

Many OEMs are working to improve the ergonomics of advanced excavator interfaces. “Volvo continuously strives to improve productivity by making more functions available on the joysticks, thereby minimizing the number of times the operator has to reach for other

controls,” says McLean. “Volvo also simplified operation by deleting switches and incorporating the controls into the main display. Rather than having to hunt all over the cab for the right switch, most functions can be accessed through the keypad located directly below the operator’s right hand. In instances where certain devices are hard to reach (like the radio), a shortcut panel has been located close to the keypad.” Common setups can be stored in the machine’s memory for ease of setup and operation.

Volvo offers in-cab monitors that can store hydraulic settings for up to 20 attachments. “The benefits are numerous for customers who need to switch attachments frequently — for example, a general contractor who was using a thumb at a site one day, but the next day needs a tilting bucket at another site. Special application customers, such as those who do demolition, like to preset hydraulic pressure and flow for their multiple attachments,” McLean notes. “In addition, some customers don’t need to switch attachments, but still like this function because the in-cab monitor setting allows the operators to set up pressure and flow in great detail.”

He adds, “In general, without the in-cab monitor system, pressure and flow may not be ideal for the application and should be adjusted manually.” Caterpillar recently introduced its Next Generation 20-ton excavators, with the 320 and 323 featuring advanced electrohydraulic systems. To simplify operation, Caterpillar designed a new cab layout that incorporates a touchscreen interface. “The cab has been redesigned completely from the ground up,” says Brian Stellbrink, marketing professional, Caterpillar. “We moved all the controls on the machine forward of the operator. There are a lot

of different buttons and controls in that interface that the operator needs to work with.” Placing all of those in front of the operator results in a very ergonomic layout. Touchscreen navigation is patterned after a smartphone or tablet. “The navigation structure is very similar to what you would expect from a lot of consumer products today,” says Stellbrink. “What that means for an operator in the seat is it is very simple, easy and intuitive to work through different menu structures. “Operators also have the option of shortcut keys,” he continues. “For some of the most commonly used items, we actually have a series of shortcut keys along the right-hand side. They can activate those rather quickly and easily rather than having to go into that screen.” The customizable control setting can be tied to individual operators. “Whether it is a key fob, a pass code or an app on your smartphone, the machine can link to that operator,” says Stellbrink. “The machine will reconfigure itself to the settings or preferences of that operator. For example, operators sometimes operate the machines in different joystick pattern controls.” He adds that 10 buttons on the joystick are reconfigurable. “If the operator is using different functions quite often, they can reconfigure those buttons. Those settings are stored,” he comments. “So when they hop

The goal of such technology is to simplify machine operation. “Hyundai sets up everything for easier operator accessibility and control, and better overall ergonomics,” says Michael Fuller, product and training specialist, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas. “Regardless of the task at hand, the operator has at his fingertips everything from engine speed, hydraulic flow and pressure and any electrical function on the machine that may be of need. “The operator can view the status of all major components and functions through the Hyundai interactive, adjustable touchscreen monitor,” says Fuller. “The operator can control those systems and functions — including hydraulic pressure and flow, power modes, attachment settings — via push buttons, with the touchscreen monitor itself or with a haptic control that is positioned right at his fingertips. Haptic control is an automotivestyle system that delivers tactile feedback by using pulses to help guide the operator through all menu sections of the monitor.” Manufacturers have worked to simplify navigation. “On Hyundai excavators, the operator has the choice of navigating the monitor using up-or-down or side-to-side arrows, by lightly pressing on the touchscreen monitor and dragging a finger up or down when moving through the different menus or by using the haptic control,” says Fuller. “We have what we

The operator can control the systems and functions — hydraulic pressure and flow, power modes, attachment settings, etc. — via push buttons, using the touchscreen monitor itself or via a haptic control that is positioned at his or her fingertips. Commonly used settings can be stored for future use. “The operator can set a name for each attachment and save as many as 10 single-acting and 10 double-acting settings, including the pressure and flow for each of the 20 settings,” says Fuller. “The monitor also displays an inclinometer, which indicates the machine’s level status in real time for enhanced safety when lifting loads, and improved grading accuracy.” While these new system interfaces provide a lot of detailed information, the goal is to

simplify operation and not confuse the operator. “Interfaces are great, but they can be confusing, which is why Kobelco excavators include performance and control features that do not require operator input,” says Lumpkins. Some of these include automatically matching pump power settings to the engine, a swing priority system to prioritize side wall digging, etc. As a result of the modern electrohydraulic systems, many functions can now be simplified to ease the operator’s workload.

SEMI-AUTONOMY GAINS TRACTION “Kobelco has worked closely with Trimble for several years to develop one of the most advanced machine control systems on the market today,” Lumpkins states. This interface is used to control simple grade control functions all the way up to full-blown 3D GPS systems. “The system does not use specialized (and potentially expensive) electronic sensor cylinders or mechanical controlled position sensors, but newly developed state-of-the-art gyroscopic sensors. These new sensors are similar to those used in modern airliners and stability systems on automobiles.” This technology can help address the shortage of skilled operators. “The excavator is probably one of the more complicated machines to operate if you are a new operator,” says Jeff Drake, machine control group, Trimble. “We have recently just added controls to the boom and the bucket of an excavator. By flicking a switch on the control lever when they get close to grade, our system takes over the boom and keeps the bucket flat to the design surface. That allows a reduction in stick motion by the operator

to grade. “When it sees the opportunity, the machine will automatically modulate the boom and the bucket functions,” says Stellbrink. “If you have machine technology via Assist... that allows the operator to more quickly get to grade more confidently, and also helps lesser experienced operators learn faster and be able to dig a high-quality final product with more limited experience. We need machines that are going to help make average operators better and make very good operators less fatigued.” Another technology on the 320 and 323 is the onboard scale system, known as Payload. “We are using sensor technology to know what is in the bucket at any given time,” says Stellbrink. “The operator knows what is in the bucket, they know what is going in the truck and the cumulative totals of what is in the truck. You can put in the most material without overloading it.” Caterpillar also allows machine movements to be limited. “E-Fence allows the operator to very quickly set certain boundary limits,” Stellbrink explains. “For example, if they are working alongside traffic and they want to prevent the machine from swinging off to the right, basically working to the left 180° or more, they can easily set a swing fence. Now that machine will not allow that operator to go past a certain point.” This gives the operator the ability to quickly and easily set up different boundary conditions when they are working around obstacles. Take the E-ceiling capability, for example. “You can set a ceiling height quickly and go about your work. It will prevent the front of the machine from going above that defined point,” says Stellbrink. There are also floor limits for underground utilities and a front limit that you can set if you are digging up against structures. “You can set a limit out in front of you and the front of the machine will not go beyond that set point,” says Stellbrink. Volvo Construction equipment has developed a guidance system that allows operators to

That display system then provides a visual guide to the operators that allows them to track progress and make adjustments as needed. The interface is incredibly easy to work with, requiring only about 10 minutes of training. “Dig Assist is one of the most useful new technologies integrated with in-cab controls,” he asserts. “It offers many benefits and quick ROI [by] making operators more accurate when

digging and reducing rework, working safely by giving visual and audible warnings with height and depth alarms and reducing labor costs by minimizing the amount of checking and rechecking for depth and slope accuracy.” The technology is currently 2D, but perhaps not for long.

the industry is rapidly moving into a semi-autonomous state of working.”

OPTIMIZE FUEL EFFICIENCY The combination of electrohydraulic controls and advanced in-cab monitors allow operators to monitor and optimize fuel consumption.

below the threshold of relief pressure, operators can use screens on the main display to precisely monitor their current and average fuel consumption. Hyundai excavators allow operators to keep a close eye on fuel consumption, as well. “HX (crawler) and HW (wheeled) excavators are equipped with an ECO Gauge,” says Fuller. “By using this function, the operator can monitor fuel consumption in real time or review historical data. The colored gauge represents engine torque and fuel efficiency. The average and total fuel consumed is also displayed. Hourly and daily consumption can be viewed in the selectable field. The gauge can assist and offer a reduction in fuel consumption based on the readings, jobsite and other factors. “Along with our different Eco modes or Eco gauge, Hyundai offers one-touch auto-deceleration, allowing the engine to return to idle just four seconds after any operation has ceased,” he adds. Kobelco also offers an ECO gauge for efficiency monitoring. “A green indicator provides fuel efficiency feedback so that operators can easily see their effective fuel savings in real time,” says Lumpkins. “Performance modes and easy mode selection provide operators with great fuel savings and the best of both worlds in a single finger touch.” Operating modes can be adjusted to meet jobsite conditions. “All North American Kobelco excavators start in H-Mode (high-performance mode) due to market demand for productivity,” says Lumpkins. However, with a touch of a button, operators can access S-Mode (standard mode) or ECO-Mode (economy mode), which reduce the fuel consumption of Kobelco excavators to better match job conditions. Three additional modes prioritize digging, breaker or hammer usage, as well as shear or thumb operation. “If using a breaker or hammer, the return oil is routed directly to the main hydraulic tank to reduce back pressure and reduce fuel consumption,” says Lumpkins. ET

“Looking forward, there is the possibility for 3D modeling that will allow for uploading a CAD model for an entire jobsite onto the system,” McLean predicts. “Overall, as can be seen across machines from dozers to motor graders and now excavators,

“One way Volvo has decreased fuel usage is by having the button that activates its proprietary ECO mode function on the main keypad,” says McLean. In addition to the ECO mode, which utilizes the computer to keep the machine running just

A mere three blocks from the White House, a 12-story office building erected in 1972 is being razed to make way for a new glass and steel structure. Pece of Mind Environmental is using a highreach/attachment combination to move the project along swiftly and safely. Though Pece of Mind had previously used a concrete processor with its extended reach machine, Steve Pece and his operator felt this project required a tool that weighed less than the existing attachment yet maintained comparable power and appetite. They chose a lightweight Genesis GDT Razer. Working from the top down, the company had successfully removed about 20,000 tons of material by project’s end. Fuel efficiency is the number one thing I look for during a demo. Burning one-third less fuel than the competition —

That’s our Ex Factor. – Stoney Welch, director of HSE, Triple B Services

Becoming one of the most successful site prep, excavation, and paving contractors in the state of Texas requires a keen eye on the financials. There’s a reason Stoney has decided to cycle 11 new Volvo excavators into his fleet over the last two years — they burn a lot less fuel, the financing is predictable and flexible, and they hold their value incredibly well. Find tips to get the most from your excavator at volvoce.com/ExFactor.

VACUUM LIFTING HELPS REPLACE WHITE HOUSE STAIRS This summer saw the start of a $1 million renovation project that included dismantling the staircases along the South Portico of the White House and installing carefully selected cuts of Missouri limestone. A rented Vacuworx MC Series vacuum lifting system with three custom pad assemblies proved advantageous as crews pulled two base stones weighing approximately 2,400 lbs. each, and set a total of 46 new slabs. Each of the 42 new South Portico steps is approximately 10 in. long, 7 in. deep and 20 in. wide. The four new landing stones are 11 ft. long, 7 in. thick and 6 ft. wide. Using the MC 5 system eliminated the need for straps, which is estimated to have saved crews nearly 8 hours. The application of vacuum lifting also mitigated the risk of chipping the top-grade material, and curbed the possibility of damaging an adjacent patio on the South Lawn. TILTROTATOR SHAVES A THIRD OFF MACHINE TIME Tom “The Dirt Ninja” Gardocki, co-owner of Next Era Excavation in Manchester, NH, took delivery of an engcon Tiltrotator in July 2017. After just four months of use, he calculates that the system saves one-third on his machine time, eliminates one laborer on every project and on some jobs saves 50% on materials. “The flexibility of the tiltrotator allows me to save on labor because I no longer need a [worker] with a hand tool shoveling around, say, a perimeter drain. I can place the stone exactly where I want it,” Gardocki states. “And because of that, especially on backfill jobs, there is no waste of material.” Next Era Excavation has also invested in the Trimble Earthworks 2D grade control platform for use on its John Deere excavator. The engcon system is fully compatible with the Trimble system — a key requirement prior to the attachment’s purchase. Learn more at ForConstructionPros.com/20985154.

Milis Flatwork was hired as the concrete contractor for a 40,000-sq.-ft. warehouse extension for a plastics company. On a job this size, Dylan Milis, owner/operator, has a well-planned system for the finishing process. “We put down the concrete with a laser screed to get it as flat and level as possible, which definitely aids in a flatter floor,” he explains. “Then, we pan the floor twice with two machines that have pans on them. After we pan the floor, we run some combo blades on it, and then we finish it out with plastic blades. This will be an exposed floor, so we’ll put a nice shine on it.” Achieving a quality floor depends on the quality of the finishing equipment, and Milis has found confidence in Wacker Neuson’s flatwork finishing line. He has also found benefits from the company’s Industrial/Commercial Concrete Floors training program. In fact, Milis attributes much of his company’s success to his crew’s understanding of the entire concrete process. Find out more at ForConstructionPros.com/20982997.

CONTRACTORS’ FAVORITE

Affordable Software

Contractors at the Associated General Contractors’ IT Forum shared what they like about their favorite low-cost computer applications.

D

ominating discussion at the Associated General Contractors’ 2017 IT Forum was construction firms’ digital leaders talking about valuable, low-cost software and other information technology solutions. The event included an open mic format for the construction IT professionals in attendance to share their most effective, inexpensive solutions. The format didn’t identify those who shared their experience, but focused attendees’ attention on the hardware and software construction companies use and consider cost-effective ways to improve operations. Following are some of the tools the contractors are using.

EASY CUSTOM ONLINE FORMS Flowfinity allows users to easily build custom mobile forms, using a code-free form editor, that can be used to gather data on unique processes. The idea is to replace spreadsheets with

digital data you can integrate with other software. “It’s an application that actually allows non-IT people to create forms,” said the contractor who shared his company’s experience with the program. “The software actually builds the database as the user is compiling the questions and answers for the form. You can integrate signatures and photos into the form. “It also works off-line really well for us. When we come back online, the data comes back to the cloud in that SQL database and we can use it however we want to,” he added.

AUTOMATE ROUTINE WORK Want to automatically move data collected from mobile apps into your company’s other applications? Zapier is an online utility that allows you to create connections between apps. For example, you can simply create a “Zap” that automatically emails a report to stakeholders when

somebody in the field completes an online time card. The contractor who suggested it described it as an “if-this-thenthat” program. “If our forms aren’t doing everything we want, we use Zapier,” he said. “It’s more of an overlay, but there are a million applications that it talks to — Azure cloud, AWS, on-premise SQL databases. So if these online forms’ capabilities are ever lacking, Zapier can be that bridge to the next step in reporting and data potential.

Zapier allows you to create connections between apps. For example, non-IT professionals can simply create a Zap that automatically emails a report to stakeholders when somebody in the field completes an online time card. “There’s an awful lot of workflow automation you can do,” he continued. “We’ll actually take a lot of our forms and surveys, bring the results in through Zapier and run it back to a SQL database that we can then connect to a [Microsoft] Power VI dashboard and graph actual results. “A lot of these online form programs are awesome,” he added, “but some of their reporting lacks. This allows us to customize that.”

CUSTOMIZE SAFETY INSPECTIONS

Flowfinity actually builds a database as the user is building a custom form or checklist, compiling questions and answers for the form with a simple form editor that bypasses code.

SafetyCulture’s iAuditor application doesn’t just allow you to digitize your safety and quality inspection forms, it helps manage audits with scheduling features, then generates automated reports. It also allows you to immediately communicate safety risks with your team. “For safety audits, we use Safety Culture’s iAuditor, which is about $10 per month. You can use iAuditor for free and just get

a PDF of a safety form; but if you don’t buy a license, you can’t upload your data to the cloud,” said a construction IT pro attending the AGC IT Forum. “We licensed Safety Culture so we can have our safety data go into the SQL database and then our safety team can run reports and access the data. “We do our form creation with it. In fact, we’ve really gone down the rabbit hole with it.

We do daily reporting with it,” he stated. “It allows markups. It takes pictures. But you don’t get a lot out of it without the license.” iAuditor allows you to build digital versions of your frequently used paper checklists. You can attach annotated images and add approval signatures. Dragand-drop templates can be easily shared with team members to help standardize audit processes.

They do phishing testing for us, as well. And we have not had a security failure since we rolled out the initial program,” he stated. Two KnowB4 users in the room offered a warning about working with the service. One summed up the situation: “You might want to get your HR department involved in the program because some of the phishing emails they send are very realistic. And as you know, spammers and phishers don’t play — there are no boundaries. They’re going to send out emails saying ‘your spouse has uploaded pictures to Ashley Madison,’ which is actually one of the templates KnowB4 uses. It was sent to one of our employees, and caused a bit of a ruckus. So we reformed that process to include getting any potential templates approved through HR.

LEARN MORE IN THE VIDEO: http://bit.ly/2BS5lS9 “But also, big thumbs up. It is a great solution,” he added. The second KnowB4 user admitted that 30% of his company’s employees fell for KnowB4’s initial phish test. He spoke highly of a simple app KnowB4 offers: “You can add a button in Outlook that makes people feel good about stepping up to say ‘Hey, I think this is phishing.’ Click the button and it goes to whomever you want.” ET

NEW TRUCKS AND OPTIONS Significant heavy-duty truck introductions and enhancements were unveiled throughout 2017.

W

hile there were many hardware updates in 2017, there were also product enhancements related to telematics systems and over-the-air update capabilities. Following are some noteworthy introductions.

NAVISTAR LAUNCHES LINE AND EXPANDS EXISTING OPTIONS Navistar replaced its aging Workstar platform with the International HV Series. It became the first severe service truck line with International’s A26 12.4-liter engine. Built from the proven European MAN D26 engine crankcase, the A26 produces up to 475 hp and 1,700 lbs.-ft. of torque from a design that weighs 600 to 700 lbs. less than a traditional 15-liter engine. The HV Series also offers the Cummins B6.7 or Cummins L9 engines. Changes focused on the engine and cab. The cab features double-sided galvanized steel construction, while redesigned cab doors give the driver a single large piece of glass to look through to improve side visibility and reduce blind spots. Reshaping the doors and side glass allowed the position of the optional pedestal mirrors to be optimized so drivers turn their heads 15% less on the

left side and 5% less on the passenger side, making it easier to keep their eyes on the road and reducing neck strain. An optional premium gauge cluster is customizable with virtual gauges. An easy access column-mounted stalk shifter is integrated with the engine braking to help drivers keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The dash contains space for up to 30 customizable switches. Super Single 1/2-in.-thick frame rails are rated up to 3.35M RBM and integral 20- and 27-in. frame extensions offer greater strength and reliability. With an inside wheel cut of up to 50°, the HV Series can easily navigate tight city streets and construction sites. Regular Cab, Extended Cab and Crew Cab configurations are available. Every HV Series model can be equipped with OnCommand Connection, a remote diagnostics system, and Over-the-air (OTA) programming. OTA offers drivers and fleets an easy, secure means of

updating engine control modules to reflect the latest manufacturer-approved calibrations, without the necessity of visiting a dealer or other service facility. Navistar also added options to the International HX Series, including a 51-in. sleeper cab on both the HX520 and HX620 models. “The HX520 and HX620 models will be available with an integrated 51-in. short sleeper cab for those drivers that need an incredibly rugged chassis designed to survive in punishing off-road applications and require a comfortable work space and roomy place to rest after a demanding day behind the wheel,” says Mark Stasell, vice president, Vocational Truck Group. In addition, the A26 12.4-liter engine will be available on the HX515 and HX615. On the telematics side, Navistar announced advancements to its OnCommand Connection platform, including Live Action Plans, a feature designed to predict when a part is going to fail. “We expect to

MACK ADDS DRIVERFOCUSED FEATURES New interiors for Mack Granite and Pinnacle models are designed to help customers attract and retain drivers and improve productivity. A new gauge cluster and dash layout improves visibility and readability, and puts frequently used controls at the

driver’s fingertips. Switches are repositioned higher on the dash, while the Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission shift pad is now within easier reach. The dash panel has room for up to 18 switches, which have laseretched labeling that won’t rub off. HVAC controls now include Automatic Temperature Control that maintains the temperature set by the driver. Multiple 12-volt and USB charging ports are available throughout the dash, including a non-slip pad on top of the dash that features two USB charging ports. A racecar-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel improves driver comfort, makes entering and exiting the vehicle easier and gives the driver a better view of the dash. The steering wheel can be equipped with illuminated cruise control, Bluetooth and audio system buttons. “We’ve incorporated more ergonomics and comfort features to make the driving environment more automotive,” says Stu Russoli, Mack highway product manager. Updates to Mack’s Co-Pilot display, located behind the steering wheel, include a 5-in. full-color screen for better visibility and more intuitive navigation. Co-Pilot provides drivers with a convenient way to monitor vehicle information, including engine and oil temperatures, trip odometers, aftertreatment status, tire pressures and more. A Pre-Trip Assistant guides drivers through inspection points and includes

Mack introduced all-new LED headlights and a new grille for its Pinnacle model, which echoes the design of the Anthem, Mack’s new highway model. a single-person exterior light inspection mode. Controls for Co-Pilot functions are located on the updated right-hand steering column stalk. The company also launched Mack Over The Air (OTA), enabling customers to update software without disrupting their schedules. “Our customers can now make these updates whenever and wherever it is convenient for them,” says David Pardue, vice president of connected vehicles and uptime services, Mack Trucks. Two categories of software updates are available through OTA. One is for powertrain components, and the other for vehicle parameters such as road speed limits, optimizing performance for customers with trucks that change duty cycles based on factors such as economics, load type and geographic area. Mack Over The Air capitalizes on Mack GuardDog Connect telematics hardware to deliver the software updates. GuardDog Connect comes standard on every Mack model equipped with a Mack engine. It provides proactive monitoring and repair planning, enabling real-time diagnosis of issues, scheduling of repairs and confirmation that needed parts are in stock and ready to install. Mack Trucks has also developed a telematics solution for Mack legacy vehicles. Working with its partner Geotab, Mack now offers connectivity for older vehicles that are not equipped with GuardDog Connect. After installing a small Geotab telematics device on model year 2011 and newer Mack vehicles equipped with Mack engines, the Mack Uptime Center will be able to monitor the same critical

If an issue is detected, Mack OneCall agents will evaluate and provide the customer’s designated contact with decision-critical information through Mack ASIST, an online communications and service management portal. Repair scheduling as well as parts and service bay availability are also confirmed, all while the truck is still on the job. For its mDrive and mDrive HD automated manual transmissions — which are engineered to work exclusively with Mack MP engines — the company added rolling start and auto neutral as standard. “Mack’s mDRIVE transmissions serve a wide range of customers, including those with demanding paving and concrete applications,” says Tim Wrinkle, Mack construction product manager. “Now updated with rolling start and auto neutral, mDRIVE transmissions are even better suited to those tasks.” The mDRIVE rolling start allows drivers to shift the transmission into drive without pressing the truck’s service brakes. This eliminates the possibility of creating a bump in the paving surface, which is a critical benefit for paving applications. Several construction applications, including concrete mixers, rely on remote throttle controls. By automatically shifting the transmission into neutral when the parking brake is set, mDRIVE auto neutral helps improve safety by reducing the

A Detroit Connect mobile app is now available for download by Freightliner and Western Star customers that have an active Detroit Connect subscription. This allows these customers to access information about their vehicles’ performance without needing to be at a desk or on a computer. The free app is available for iOS or Android-enabled mobile devices, and can be found in the Apple Store or Google Play. The app offers many of the same features found in the webbased Detroit Connect portal, making it easier for customers to gain insights about fleet health, fault event diagnostic information and fault history delivered by Detroit Connect Virtual Technician. A push notification feature even immediately notifies users of “service now” fault events delivered by Virtual Technician. The app is also designed to incorporate other Detroit Connect features, including Detroit Connect Analytics fuel efficiency insights and safety reporting.

MOBILE ACCESS TO REAL-TIME, ACTIONABLE INFORMATION... IS ESSENTIAL FOR OUR CUSTOMERS. ” “Mobile access to real-time, actionable information regarding a vehicle’s performance is essential for our customers,” says Jason Krajewski, director, connectivity, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). “This new app enables fleet decision makers to take whatever action is needed to maintain uptime and maximize efficiency.” Access to the Detroit Connect portal and mobile app is included with any active Detroit Connect subscription at no charge. When a vehicle arrives at the service location, the service advisor can obtain all necessary vehicle data by scanning the VIN or QR code that is located on the door pillar. The application instantly loads all warranty coverage, repair history and Detroit Connect Virtual Technician details. “A scanned vehicle number eliminates human entry errors and further speeds the overall repair process,” says Marty Kubiak, manager, central service systems, DTNA. “An incorrect VIN can create many problems downstream of the repair process. The intake process for a truck repair is the first and most critical step.” After a vehicle is received through Express WriteUp, Uptime Pro helps dealers to stay connected with the customer throughout the repair and manage the repair more efficiently. Spec Guides Offer a Smarter Way to Buy If you’re looking to buy equipment, these resources give you the ability to find all the information you need in one place.

T

he 2017 Wells Fargo Construction Industry Forecast indicated that two-thirds of contractors typically own their equipment for six years or longer. So when it’s time to add something new to your fleet, it’s clearly not a decision you take lightly. A new piece of equipment can be a way to reinvest in your business. As such, you should take your time and do some research before making a large purchase. Researching a new machine is an important first step to help you decide exactly what you’ll want to buy or rent. Contractors research manufacturers, models, engine type and size, maintenance costs and much more before making a purchasing decision. More and more contractors are researching equipment on the go. According to a national research study conducted by Eric Mower + Associates Group B2B, 50% of contractors use a smartphone, 49% use a laptop with mobile web access and 21% utilize an iPad or other tablet for their jobs, suggesting more business purchase research and decisions are being conducted online from the field rather than behind a desk. Of those with a smartphone, more than half (53%) use it in the purchase decision-making process to do things like research brands and products, compare

prices and scan product codes. The survey also found that 91% of contractors use websites to assist in purchase decision making. That’s where we come in.

and download equipment specs to help you make the right buying decision for your jobsite needs. We started in Summer 2016 with the Excavator Spec Guide, followed a few months later by a Skid-Steer Spec Guide — both of which are sponsored by Wacker Neuson (ForConstructionPros. com/10075166). This past October, we launched an interactive Tandem Roller Spec Guide, sponsored by the Hamm division (ForConstructionPros. com/10073218) of Wirtgen America and featuring more than 170 roller models from over 10 manufacturers. Asphalt Paver Spec Guide, sponsored by the Vogele division (ForConstructionPros. com/10075523) of Wirtgen America, came shortly thereafter, and offers a simple sort feature that will let you easily filter by type (rubber track or steel track), engine, hopper size, paving widths and more. We hope these resources prove helpful to you. If there is a specific item you’re looking for, or a particular type of equipment you would like to see us add in future, please reach out to us. We’re always happy to help you find the ideal equipment to make you and your crews more productive and your business more profitable in the years ahead. Make It A to Boost Performance Performance Groups offer a chance to work with your peers to uncover how to boost profits, cut costs and address problem areas.

I

was going to cover the tax bill this month, but as I was writing this, it had not yet been completed to the point where it could be sent to the White House for signature. I do, however, know there are a lot of features in the bill that benefit contractors, such as increasing direct write-offs of fixed assets; potentially lower tax rates depending on your tax structure; and the ability to use cash basis accounting for tax purposes. There are others, as well, and we will do this review geared to your business as soon as the bill is passed. So instead of covering the tax bill, I thought we would cover performance — especially how to deal with it, both good and bad. Whether you’re starting at the bottom of the rung or are somewhere near the top, there is one thing I believe we all want and that is to improve performance. So what if I told you there is a way to improve performance that is virtually 100% guaranteed to deliver better operating results, a stronger balance sheet and increased cash flow? Interested? You should be. Does it work? Sure does. Is it cheap? Probably not.

But I know these programs work if you participate as noted above. In fact, I work with a few of these groups and am totally amazed how much useful, practical information is obtained from each meeting, which will pay for the meeting ten times over. We meet three times. All the same CEOs or COOs attend. They have been doing this for 10 years, and they all say “I paid for the meeting in the first 10 minutes of the meeting.” We spend half a day going through and discussing the composite, including the gap analysis. The second half of the first day covers a special topic agreed to by the participants. The first half of day two is devoted to ideas presented by each participating company that can increase profits, reduce costs or deal with any number of problem areas encountered in the business. I can truthfully say I am impressed every time by the passion the participants put into these presentations. And at the following meeting, it is not unusual to hear that someone tried one of the ideas and it really worked out well for them. The balance of the day is run by the participants, where they address specific topics or problems they are interested in discussing.
