B R E AKI N G G R O U N D By Becky Schultz

Make A SAFETY New Year’s Resolution WHILE SAFETY SHOULD HAVE A top priority on your jobsites year round, the start of a new year offers a chance to assess how your program worked during the past year and how it could be improved for the future. Even one accident is too many and near misses are merely accidents in which those involved happened to get

Becky Schultz / bschultz@acbusinessmedia.com

lucky. Both offer lessons to be learned that can help you in your resolve to reduce risks in the months ahead. Take time to go back over any accident reports to identify all of the underlying causes (not just the obvious ones); determine if the incident could have been prevented; and identify steps that can be

taken to prevent a recurrence in future. Do the same for any near misses reported on your sites. If you don’t currently have a policy in place to record near misses, I encourage you to implement one, since these incidents offer the chance to mitigate problem areas before an accident actually occurs. Talk to those who were involved or who witnessed both accidents and nearmiss incidents to get their insight on what took place, why and how it might have been prevented. Use the information obtained not to place blame but rather to identify: any work practices and/or processes that need to be improved or altered, as well as those that should be avoided in similar scenarios; specific procedures and/or equipment (PPE or other) that could be implemented to enhance safety or mitigate identified risks; any necessary education or training requirements/opportunities for personnel that could further enhance safety. Since the winter months are the “slow” season for many construction businesses, it’s an ideal time to sit down with employees to review safety policies and to bring required safety training up to date. Also consider utilizing outside resources that can provide safety-related and other relevant training (some at no cost), such as your local dealer, equipment manufacturers, equipment operator training schools, community colleges, etc.

Take the opportunity to identify and address any safety-related questions or concerns your workers may have, as well. Ask for their input on ways to improve safety, both on the jobsite and in the office. As incentive, acknowledge and reward any exceptional ideas and examples of safe practices in action. Finally, use this time to sit down with an in-house (or third-party) safety expert and field managers to review the company’s safety program and policies. Construction projects and the equipment and technologies being used to complete them have become increasingly complex. There are hazards and distractions today that were unheard of even five years ago. Your company’s program and policies need to keep pace with today’s changing work environment in order to ensure the safety of your workers and all those who enter your jobsites. ET

Automated boom and bucket movement capabilities were added to the Volvo Active Control system on the new EC220E excavator. Using the incab Volvo Co-Pilot tablet, the system guides operators on how to enter parameters of the job to be completed; once entered, the operator pushes a button to initiate the job. The excavator then automatically adjusts the boom and bucket movements based on the parameters entered, enabling the correct cuts and angle of grade to be achieved with each pass. Only the operator’s left hand is necessary for controlling the excavator’s arm speed, helping to improve comfort. Volvo Active Control was developed in-house and is powered by the Dig Assist application. Drive-by-wire technology is utilized to control the excavator’s electrohydraulic system. Both height and depth limit are included to ensure safe operation by preventing the bucket from going above or digging below a preset limit.

The Danfoss Autonomous Control Library provides key software algorithms needed to guide autonomous machines from one area of a site to the next. CREATING PRECISION SYSTEMS To aid OEMs like Volvo and John Deere with their automated system development, Danfoss Power Solutions has added a new Autonomous Control Library to its PLUS+1 GUIDE software solution. It provides the key software algorithms necessary for autonomous machine navigation, helping to simplify the design process for integrating autonomous solutions. Information processed as part of “positioning” blocks are fed into a “path-follower” block that can then process prescribed checkpoints to guide the autonomous machine from one spot to another. Instead of raw GPS coordinates, it translates longitude and latitude into UTM coordinates. This creates a grid

system that is easier to use on smaller scale processors. “These function blocks translate and adapt proven robotics concepts specifically for the off-highway mobile machinery markets,” states Chris Woodard, business development manager of autonomous systems, Danfoss Power Solutions. “By bringing these concepts into PLUS+1 GUIDE, developers can easily integrate autonomous functionality on their machines — all without having to be an expert in robotics or navigation systems.” Suppliers of precision systems, such as Trimble and Topcon, provide both aftermarket and OEM solutions. While an aftermarket solution allows end users to take advantage of

these systems’ benefits by adding the technology to existing equipment, their integration at the OEM level has been increasing because of customers’ growing adoption of the technology. Integrating and calibrating a system like grade guidance at the factory level allows the machine to arrive at the jobsite ready to work, eliminating the need to spend time attaching components such as antennas. It also allows many components to be installed directly within the machine, keeping them protected in harsh operating environments. Liebherr is offering a Trimble Ready factory option for its new PR736 Generation 8 bulldozers. This reduces the cost and complexity of installation as all of the necessary components and mounting hardware are included on the machine. “By providing a Trimble Ready option, customers now have a solution that enables quick, easy installation of Trimble Earthworks,” Johannes Neureiter, product manager for Liebherr, points out. “Contractors are increasingly utilizing construction technology on the jobsite, and this new

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ADVANCES AUTONOMY Advancing technologies such as improved sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) are helping to make precision and automated systems more prevalent in heavy-duty equipment industries. These technologies are enabling manufacturers to increase the amount of data they are getting out of their machines, which allows them to develop advanced algorithms for automating even more machine functions. Because of these advancements, manufacturers such as Volvo Construction have been able to create fully autonomous machine concepts capable of being remotely operated. Johanna Huggare, manager intelligent machine platforms, believes the construction industry is waking up to the possibilities of AI, and it will make the industry safer and more efficient. “You only have to be in one of these autonomous machines for a minute before you start to feel comfortable and trust every decision it makes,” she comments. “And when we meet our customers, they tell us they want to buy our prototype machines today.” By using precision systems to automate some machine functions, manufacturers are providing productivity and efficiency benefits today, while also aiding the transition toward fully autonomous operation on the construction sites of tomorrow. Tips for Safe, Productive DIGGING WITH EXCAVATORS Plan ahead to reduce accident risk & maximize productivity.

P

roper operation of an excavator while trenching, sloping or benching can have a big impact on productivity. Planning ahead will optimize performance, minimize the risk of accidents and maximize productivity. One of the most common mistakes is failing to plan your approach to the excavation. Bottlenecks in the process can result in moving material more times than necessary. Take time to visualize how the job will progress to avoid “boxing” the machine in between obstacles or the spoils pile, or limiting your reach.

As part of the planning process, it’s important to identify: where you will put the spoils pile where pipe, bedding or other materials will be staged where any existing utilities are located in the case of trenching, whether additional shoring may be needed A stable platform for the excavator is an essential element of site setup. Make sure the machine will sit on even ground and that the ground is stable. If needed, pack dirt under one of the tracks to ensure a level surface. When digging a trench, take time to create some form of guide, whether that be offset stakes, a chalk line or stringline. Then align the front and back of the machine to the line you’re referencing to ensure you’re tracking straight. Position the machine at a productive height for loading material. The bench height should be about the height of the haul vehicle’s sideboards. Most experts recommend setting up for the trucks to come down the left side of the excavator, which is best for loading angle and visibility.

SAFETY FIRST

GET PRODUCTIVE

The biggest potential hazard of working over the edge of a hole is the risk of cave-ins, which can endanger not only those in the trench but the operator and machine, as well. As such, it’s critical to maintain a safe distance from the edge based on soil type. Make sure you know the type of soil on which the excavator is resting, and ensure the machine is positioned far enough back to support its weight. Maintain awareness of people and objects around the machine at all times. Be aware of blindspots around the machine, including the working radius of the rear counterweight. Builtin camera systems on today’s excavators can help to mitigate risks, but it is still the operator’s responsibility to be aware of objects, equipment and especially personnel within the work area. Pay close attention to the direction of travel. An excavator allows the upper housing to be rotated 360˚. However, the undercarriage tracks in the same direction, regardless of which way the operator is facing. Make sure that you are in the forward-facing direction to avoid inadvertent movement in the wrong direction that could potentially put the operator and machine, as well as those working around it, in a precarious position.

Once you’re ready to dig, start with a marking path for the top layer and gradually work your way down. Avoid digging from the bottom up, which can waste time and fuel and lead to under cutting the excavator. Completing a series of short, connecting sections is more efficient than digging a series of holes and trying to connect the holes. Start out by digging the teeth in just enough to mark the direction of the trench so it’s in alignment. Then, gradually go down layer by layer. A grade laser or other form of grade control system can make the task of achieving grade much easier. However, it’s important to calibrate the system with the position of the bucket prior to beginning excavation. If the project requires working on the face of a hill, it’s important to consult the equipment operator’s manual to determine the safe operating ratios. Position the tracks of the excavator straight up and down the hill. Should the machine start to slide, it will be at less risk of tipover should the edge of the tracks catch on something on the way down. Also position the sprockets, which are the heaviest part of the track, inside so they’re next to the hill. The steeper the slope, the more care required — and the harder the swing motor will be required to work. If you’re moving material too quickly, it may not be able to safely handle the load. In such cases, slow, steady movement, or smaller bucket loads, may actually be more productive. Productivity can also be enhanced by taking advantage of the excavator operating modes, such as the fine grading mode. These automatic settings optimize both the speed of the engine and hydraulic settings to the task at hand. ET

oncrete is one of the most readily available, reliable and widely used construction materials. Consequently, manufacturers have been improving on their concrete attachments in order to make concrete operations more efficient, safer and less costly. Since concrete is durable, the attachments used in concrete applications also need to be more durable, says Stuart Galloway, president of the Canadian Concrete Expo. Concrete can be a messy activity, as well. On the mixing end, wet concrete can gum up components. From a demolition perspective, small particles created through the demolition

process can infiltrate attachments and cause damage. Since both construction and demolition can present risks, efforts have been made to make the use of these attachments safer. Some also include automation and enhanced versatility in order to improve concrete work.

CUTTING AND CRUSHING Concrete is a material that lasts a long time, with many concrete structures often outliving their original use. “That is why so many attachments have been created for the destruction of concrete,” says Galloway. Concrete pulverizers easily crush through reinforced concrete and cut through light steel

The Caterpillar H80 hammer is a 1,000-ft.-lb. category attachment with an impact frequency of 600 to 1,500 bpm and is suited for carriers weighing more than 13,000 lbs. Epiroc breakers incorporate automation for intelligent systems that enable simpler, more efficient and more economical breaker operation.

structures. Take the Nye XCP4 pulverizer, for example. One of the latest innovations on this attachment is its patented ripper shank located at the rear of the pulverizer. It is used for prying, ripping, flipping, sorting and manipulating. The profile on the unit’s teeth has evolved over many years of development to get the best performance. “We have pioneered many unique features on pulverizers, from our rebar pulling feature to our patented ripper,” says Mark Nye, president of Nye Manufacturing. “The XCP4 represents our ninth generation of concrete pulverizers. We have been innovating for a long time.” Antraquip manufactures and distributes hydraulic rock drum cutters suitable for material with uni-axial compressive strength (UCS) ranging from 500 to 25,000 psi, which includes rock and concrete. The drum cutters feature a robust and customizable drum, powerful high-torque hydraulic motors and robust cutting drums. The company manufactures both transverse drum cutters and axial hydraulic drum cutters. The transverse drum cutters are well suited for a variety of applications, including rock excavation, trenching, demolition, concrete tunneling or underwater. Axial hydraulic drum cutters are mounted lengthways and are designed for specialized application models, such as narrow trenches, remediation, profiling, scaling and controlled demolition. Tramac offers a highly versatile attachment for concrete applications, the Multi-Utility Demolition Shears MT Series. The bottom half of the processor

The Nye XCP4 has a ripper shank located at the rear of the pulverizer that is used for prying, ripping, flipping, sorting and manipulating. (shears) is replaceable. According to Shaun Brown, sales manager, in about five minutes, the attachment can be converted from a concrete cracker to a pulverizer jaw for crushing concrete; a steel shear for cutting I-beams; a tank jaw that features two blades on one side and one blade on the other; or a railways jaw that is specially designed for dealing with rail’s hard and brittle metal that is so difficult on jaws. The latest innovations to the attachment include the addition of a speed valve that makes the jaws open and close quicker for faster cycling times. It achieves this by taking outgoing oil and dumping it with incoming oil. It is also equipped with a quick-connect system for faster change-outs. With this attachment, you can not only demolish concrete structures but you can separate the rebar from the concrete. “Concrete with rebar in it is considered to be contaminated,” says Brown. “If you separate the rebar from the concrete, the concrete can be used as a backfill, and the rebar is recyclable material. The attachment makes it easier to get rid of demolition debris.”

HAMMERING AND DRILLING Hammers are designed for breaking a variety of concrete surfaces, including sidewalks

and driveways, pavement, roads and masonry, as well as frozen ground for utility repairs. Caterpillar’s B Hammers are designed for construction and light demolition applications. They feature a gas-fired design for consistent high production over the life of the attachment. The flat-top/top-mount style provides a larger work area, enhanced visibility and increased impact power by keeping breaker force and stick force in line. Slip-fit bushings are easy to maintain and can be replaced in the field. The Epiroc HB heavy hydraulic breaker attachments are well suited for primary blast-free rock excavation and secondary rock breaking on construction sites and in quarries, surface and underground mines, as well as primary demolition of massive reinforced concrete structures. They feature the Intelligent Protection System (IPS), which combines Epiroc’s AutoControl and StartSelect functions. According to Epiroc, the fully automated system

The Danuser Mega Mixer includes updates such as an 8-in.-diameter steel auger with an 8-in. pitch for faster mixing and dispensing. provides simpler, more efficient and more economical breaker operation. Brokk asserts the TEI Rock Drills MMB326 is safer, more

productive, more accurate and quieter than handheld tools used in the same application. The unit features an expanded hole range up to 3 in. in diameter and uses a 360˚ positioner for drilling in a variety of positions. The 30-in.long MMB326 delivers 200 ft.-lbs. of impact energy at 3,480 bpm. The unit’s reversible rotation motors deliver high torque to ensure powerful drilling, and its variable rotation is capable of speeds up to 250 rpm, which minimizes the risk of jamming.

SCOOPING AND MIXING

The bottom half of the Tramac Multi-Utility Demolition Shears MT Series is replaceable, enabling it to be transformed into one of five different attachments in about five minutes.

Although many attachments designed for concrete are used in demolition applications, there are some that get used on the mixing/placing side. Most popular in this category are mixing buckets. Danuser’s updated Mega Mixer mixing bucket allows operators to mix, scoop and dispense materials, including bag mix concrete. Material can be dispensed from either side due to mounts equipped on both sides. “The Mega Mixer is a very diverse material-handling bucket that can mix, scoop and dispense a wide variety of material. It can handle mortar, grout, asphalt, topsoil, sand, sawdust and concrete,” says Kurt Schellenberger, marketing manager, Danuser. “With it, you can get in closer to the pour and in other

www.ForConstructionPros.com

ET0120_20-21_Attachments_Concrete_CB.indd 21

tight spaces because the vehicle required to carry the attachment is much smaller than a mixer truck.” The latest changes to the Mega Mixer include an updated steel auger for faster mixing and dispensing and a new discharge end that is easier to operate. Improved torque is achieved due to a 22.8-cu.-in. motor, which is capable of dispensing 3/4 yd. of material in 26 seconds. The robust discharge end has a handle that controls the gate and gives users more flow control and helps them reduce spillage. “We also redesigned our auger. The 8-in.-diameter steel auger with 8-in. pitch mixes and dispenses faster than the previous model,” says Schellenberger. “Twenty 80-lb. bags of concrete could be mixed in about five minutes.” The end result of innovations such as these is more efficiency and productivity on the jobsite. “Concrete is a great building material, but it can be tricky to work with,” Galloway comments. “Original equipment manufacturers are designing attachments that make working with concrete much simpler and more profitable.” ET

ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS ARE DESIGNING ATTACHMENTS THAT MAKE WORKING WITH CONCRETE MUCH SIMPLER AND MORE PROFITABLE.”

MIXING SYSTEM ENABLES REUSE OF DREDGED SEDIMENT

The roughly 60-mile-long Delaware and Raritan Canal functions as a means of transporting water and acts as a reservoir, providing water to millions of central New Jersey residents. Over time, sediment from road and land runoff is deposited in the canal, decreasing its water storage capacity. Consequently, dredging is periodically required to improve water quality and restore the canal’s original carrying capacity. A three-year project is currently underway that will remove approximately 327,000 cu. yds. of material and prep it for reuse. An Allu soil stabilization and Processor system is a key part of that process. Learn more at www.ForConstructionPros.com/21104215.

BEST ATTACHMENTS FOR EXPANDING INTO DEMOLITION SERVICES Used in the correct way, attachments have proven to reduce cost and time spent on site, increase productivity and recycling and dramatically change the face of the demolition industry in terms of methodology and equipment usage. However, knowing the right attachment and correct size and capacity of machine to which it will be joined is of vital importance. You may need to choose between fixed or rotating or manual or hydraulic, or you may need interchangeable jaws depending on whether you are shearing, crushing, picking, ripping, breaking or pulling down structures. For a quick guide to machine-mounted attachments and their uses, go to www.ForConstructionPros.com/21087895.

SKID STEER SAW PROVES MORE MOBILE THAN WALK-BEHIND Matt Hephner and his son Matthew built a custom saw for their concrete cutting and drilling company, Cuts Inc. The unique saw attaches to a skid steer and is compatible with any diamond saw blade — two pieces of equipment nearly every contractor already owns. The saw has been in production for two years, with 15 saws currently in use in the field. But it’s not concrete cutting professionals like Hephner that are buying the tool, but the average contractor. “[The average contractor] doesn’t want to spend twice as much on a floor saw that has much higher maintenance costs, whereas this is just an attachment that he can keep on the side and use as needed just like he might use his broom, bucket or forks on his skid steer,” Hephner explains. orking at heights is an inherently risky activity and, unfortunately, falls from mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) such as scissor or boom lifts occur on an all too frequent basis. Entrapment or crushing incidents and electrocutions are common, as well, particularly in North America. “In the U.S., there are 40% of all MEWPs worldwide… and between 70% to 80% of known fatal accidents using MEWPs occur in the U.S. So, it’s quite a significant number,” says Andrew Delahunt, technical and safety director, International Powered Access Federation (IPAF). Yet, he adds, “It is important to put it into perspective that MEWPs are quite commonly the safest option to work at height. We’ve done research that says within 2018, there were 1.47 million MEWPs in rental fleets — so nearly 1.5 million machines out there, and probably double that if you also consider the owner/operator end user. “When we’re looking… just in terms of rental fleet numbers, it’s over 1 million operators every day, factoring in the amount of utilization,” he continues. “So, the accident rate is really very low when you consider how many people work safely at heights.” But with so many accidents still occurring, IPAF is working

to identify and mitigate the risks. Over the past six years, the organization has been collecting accident data — including fatal or serious accidents and near misses — stemming from use of MEWPs and other powered access equipment in order to paint a broad picture of where accidents most often occur, what the recurring issues may be and the underlying factors behind them. “If you look at the accidents that occur, there are some common issues that, if we address them and share them within the wider industry, it makes working at heights safer… for everybody,” says Delahunt.

ACCIDENT REPORTING DICTATES BEST PRACTICES The IPAF.org website features a page (ir.ipaf.org) that enables companies and individuals, both members and non-members, to report an accident or near accident involving powered access equipment. “There are a lot of serious accidents and a lot of nearmiss occurrence events where an accident could have occurred that thankfully did not,” says Delahunt. “You can learn from all of that. That’s what the project really spends most of its time on.” Reporting is done anonymously. “We don’t ask people to put their names there or say

what particular type (brand) of machine,” Delahunt notes. “It is looking at what occurred, what type of activity, whether they were elevated or traveling, whether they were loading the machine or if it’s during transport or maintenance, as well. So, it covers the whole use of the machine.” IPAF utilizes the information generated to identify the risk factors associated with certain types of incidents. For example, in the case of falls from platforms, the organization assesses whether the incident was due to, say, insufficient ground conditions or operator behavior, such as failing to wear a safety harness. IPAF publishes a report outlining how and why accidents are occurring and how the industry can work to prevent them. “In addition there will be a special report for our IPAF members focused on rental operations. The report will have more detail about the typical accidents that occur with the maintenance, transport and delivery of rental equipment,” Delahunt notes. “Over the last six years, we’ve looked at all of this to get a broad picture of what the unsafe practices are,” he continues, “and we take those learnings and put them out to the industry through the safety campaigns that we run, through improvements in our training and also in… specific guidance [that we] release out to the industry on the proper way to use MEWPs.”

what our Street Smart campaign seeks to raise awareness of.” The campaign is intended to encourage managers and operators to properly plan the setup for MEWPs when working around traffic. “If you just hope a driver won’t hit your machine, then you are not really protecting yourself properly,” Delahunt emphasizes. “You should be

doing everything you can to make sure that machine is put in a safe position, because you can’t control what the driver does. Plan to segregate the traffic and position the MEWP to avoid exposure to vehicles.” The Street Smart campaign stresses the importance of having a good traffic management plan to segregate traffic from where

the MEWP is positioned and to ensure proper visibility. Key points of guidance in the campaign include: ˜ Plan ahead. Assess the risk; develop and use a traffic management scheme. Be ˜ visible. Wear hi-vis PPE to position cones/signs. Ensure vehicles are conspicuous (use flashing beacons/rear chevrons) and that work areas are well lit. Manage traffic. Use tem˜ porary traffic lights or close roads to separate the working area. Use signs and cones for maximum warning to oncoming vehicles. Implement an exclusion ˜ zone. Segregate the working area from passing vehicles. Position the MEWP so it does not overhang into traffic. Load and unload safely. ˜ Load or unload in a welllit area away from traffic or obstructions. When unloading next to a road, make sure it is segregated from traffic. “This campaign highlights key risks and how to avoid them,” Delahunt states. “We hope that, along with previous IPAF campaigns such as Plan Ahead for Safety and Back to Basics, it will continue to help people use powered access safely.” ET

One of the safety campaigns IPAF recently initiated is called Street Smart (https:// bit.ly/2Oxn4Fz). It focuses on MEWP use on or adjacent to roads or highways, which present a risk of being struck by passing vehicles. “Trucks or buses hit the base of the MEWP or hit the extending arm of the platform and the operator is especially exposed in that area,” says Delahunt. “That’s

SENSORS PROVE CONCRETE STRENGTH IN COLD WEATHER Bottorff Construction used SmartRock sensors in concrete placed under the same conditions as previous concrete that was ruled deficient. The sensors showed the concrete wasn’t deficient and that the sensors produce more accurate data than what was used by a third-party agency.

ottorff Construction Inc., a total package cast-inplace concrete company based out of Kansas, was working a 276-unit, super energyefficient multifamily apartment in Kansas City. The company faced a number of challenges with its schedule during winter when temperatures dropped below 20° F. Construction paused and an inspection agency came in to inspect the work. The agency deemed the concrete to be deficient due to freezing, and Bottorff was instructed to tear it out. “The customer used a third party to verify work was completed to spec. They used a high/ low rating system placed on the concrete floor and determined that the concrete had frozen,” says William Pettit, Bottorff. Bottorff challenged whether field-cured cylinders were following American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidelines for cold weather conditions and accurately reflecting strength of in-place concrete. The company had confidence in its work, but without a means of

A Giatec SmartRock sensor wirelessly transmits concrete data to the cloud, which can be accessed by key personnel. accurately measuring concrete temperature, it was at the mercy of third-party agencies. “They placed a monitor that measures outside ambient temperature, which is not a true representation of the temperature inside the concrete,” says Pettit. “But no one was checking the checker. No one was monitoring the agency’s testing methods to see if they were accurate. No one checked to see if they were meeting ACI guidelines.” Bottorff tore up the concrete deemed deficient and placed Giatec concrete maturity testers into the new batch, which was placed under the same conditions as the first batch that was said to have frozen. “This proved to the design team and to the third party that the concrete was an acceptable temperature,” says Pettit.

www.ForConstructionPros.com

ET0120_41_ProfitMatters_BC.indd 41

“Partnering up with one of our SmartRock Plus ready-mix producers, Geiger Ready-Mix, allowed the Bottorff team to capture real-time data on concrete temperature and strength using wireless sensors. This helped them optimize critical operations and make decisions directly on site,” says Sarah McGuire, senior director, SmartRock Plus Division.

CONFIDENCE IN ACCURATE, REAL-TIME DATA Bottorff adopted Giatec SmartRock wireless concrete sensors two years ago in order to stay off deficiency lists and to finish projects more quickly due to having access to concrete maturity data in real time. This is important because without a means of measuring concrete strength, contractors tend to wait longer than necessary to be on the safe side. Batch testing is only a proxy on the in-place concrete strength. Bottorff invested in the sensors with the expectation that the company could shorten the wait time but still have the confidence that the concrete had reached strength. “We were working on a project and before forms could be removed, we had to know the

concrete had met strength. Using Giatec sensors allowed us to shave off one day for every single pour in order to get our forms stripped and to turn that area over to the next street,” says Pettit. “In each case, we could strip our forms a day earlier because we knew the concrete had reached strength. In total, we saved 20 working days on that project. “Now, with the introduction of the concrete maturity monitors, the third-party agency has taken a step back and waits for us to finish the 24-hour break and the seven-day break, and they now use our data in their reports back to the owner,” he adds.

MEETING CUSTOMER TIMELINE It turns out the sensors have other uses, as well. “One of our customers called and said the main driveway to their facility had to be replaced and that they wanted to drive on the concrete within just four hours,” says Pettit. “Scheduling was tight because the testing agency was only available for a short time. So, we replaced their driveway and the concrete contained Giatec monitors. Once we gained the strength we needed, we opened the driveway back up to the facility within the time desired by the customer.” Pettit says that he has noticed other companies around Kansas adopting the sensors. “We are all on board with Giatec,” he comments. “It has done wonderful things for our company, and I see it gaining traction in Kansas.” ET

The Half-ton

ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK

Soon to Be a Reality R&D budgets soar as manufacturers compete to mass produce electric half-ton pickup trucks.

T

Ford teased its prototype allelectric F-150 in a video showing it towing 10 double-decker rail cars and 42 2019 model year F-150s, a load weighing a total of over 1 million lbs. Image Source: Ford

he three top-selling vehicles in North America include the Ford-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 half-ton pickup trucks. And with the growing interest in electric vehicles, the half-ton pickup offers an attractive target for electric vehicle manufacturers. Predictions estimate that up to 14% of worldwide auto sales will be electric vehicles by 2030. Yet, there are currently no electric options for the most popular vehicles being sold in the U.S. Early adopters of electric vehicles typically include government fleets. They often have mandates to reduce their carbon footprint and electric vehicles provide a path toward that goal. But a steep purchase price frequently serves as a deterrent for the general consumer market. Electric vehicles — and presumably that will include electric pickup trucks — have proven much more expensive to purchase due to the battery technology used and the current

42  EQU IPM ENT T ODAY | January 2020 ET0120_42-45_Trucks_ElectricPickup_BC.indd 42

limited scale of production. The batteries utilize expensive materials in order to hold the massive electric charge needed to make the vehicles practical for most applications. Costs should drop as production scales. The industry must also address issues surrounding range anxiety and the availability of charging stations, which are the two most common technology concerns potential customers voice. When you run low on fuel with an internal combustion-powered vehicle, you just pull into a filling station and top off the tank with gasoline or diesel. With an electric vehicle, you need to locate a charging station and it typically takes longer than a few minutes to bring the battery up to full charge. Customers who travel long distances may be a hard sell for an electric vehicle in the near term due to the lack of charging infrastructure and the related battery charging times. Installing infrastructure will take time. So don’t expect the truck market to convert to electric pickups overnight. In fact, electric pickups are likely to be niche products for the foreseeable future. There are currently a handful of competitors who have publicly announced they are working on half-ton electric models. There are no indications that the heavy-duty pickup market will see electric alternatives in the foreseeable future. Note that no manufacturer has acknowledged

development work on a full-size heavy-duty pickup. So, expect this market segment to remain the domain of the diesel engine well into the next decade.

KEY PLAYERS IN ELECTRIC HALF TONS Two of the current half-ton pickup truck manufacturers have acknowledged development of an electric model. In April, Mary Barra, General Motors (GM) chief executive, stated that GM would make a

half-ton electric pickup truck. No other details have been shared about the truck, but the company plans to spend $8 billion to develop electric and self-driving vehicles. Ford shared that it will invest $11.5 billion electrifying its vehicles by 2022, including adding 16 fully electric models. It confirmed it will bring an allelectric F-150 to market. This will be in addition to the all-new F-150 Hybrid that goes on sale next year.

believe Rivian can benefit from Ford’s industrial expertise and resources.” Newcomer Rivian is well positioned to be the first manufacturer to make the mass market half-ton electric pickup a reality. It is a Plymouth, MI-based electric truck and SUV startup that has substantial backing from several key investors. Earlier this year, Amazon

invested $700 million in the company and Ford invested $500 million. Cox Automotive, a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises, is the home of nearly 30 automotive brands, including Autotrader, Kelley Blue Book, Pivet, RideKleen and Manheim, which transport, service and auction vehicles across more than 150 global locations. It announced an equity investment of $350 million in Rivian.

Rivian gained a lot of credibility in 2019 when Amazon announced its plans to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans. Amazon plans to have 10,000 of these vans on the road by 2022 and it expects to have all in service by 2023. Rivian offers a unique design approach that creates manufacturing efficiencies across potential market offerings. It intends to build all of its vehicles on a flexible skateboard chassis. This will allow several different

chassis configurations to be built on a common platform. The skateboard chassis houses quad motors to drive the wheels, independent air suspension, an intelligent battery management system, hydraulic roll control system and thermal systems — all below the height of the wheels. This allows extra storage space where an internal combustion engine and drivetrain would typically sit. The company already has a factory in place. It plans to build its electric vehicles at a 2.6 million sq.-ft. former Mitsubishi assembly plant in Normal, IL, that it acquired for $16 million two years ago. Rivian first unveiled its R1T electric truck at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Preliminary specs are impressive. It promises a range of up to 400+ miles and

w f p e d a C t T s d U l a i a a 0- to 60-mph acceleration time of under three seconds. It is estimated to pump out up to 750 hp and have a maximum towing capacity of 11,000 lbs. Just remember when looking at the range numbers that they are likely to drop when pulling a heavily loaded trailer. The R1T will not be limited to paved surfaces. A Quad-Motor System has the ability to send instant power independently to each wheel for maximum traction and a wading depth for deep water crossings of over 3 ft. In off-road mode, the R1T promises a 14.1-in. ground clearance. It also offers a 2˚ breakover angle. The suspension system incorporates adaptive damping control, which dynamically adjusts damping at each wheel within a fraction of

a second, optimizing traction wherever you go. The battery offers up to 180 kWh. This makes it one of the world’s largest automotive battery packs currently available. Battery placement will result in a lower center of gravity as the battery pack distributes weight evenly between the wheels. This will add stability in off-road conditions. It also anchors the vehicle to the ground at speed and around corners. Rivian is promising Level 3 autonomy will be available on every vehicle. There are currently five defined levels of autonomy.

Level 3 autonomy would be a vehicle that is capable of managing itself on a freeway journey, excluding on- and off-ramps and city driving. As of October 2019, Rivian is forecasting a starting price of $69,000 for the R1T. This would be before the $7,500 federal tax credit. Deliveries are expected late in 2020. Tesla is the current leader in the North American electric car market and recently updated its previously announced electric pickup truck plans. On November 21, Tesla unveiled its long-promised electric model,

called the Cybertruck. While this truck will not be available to customers until the end of 2021 or possibly 2022, you can reserve your spot in line with a $100 refundable deposit. According to company founder Elon Musk, there are already 250,000-plus customer orders. The Cybertruck is sure to stand out from the crowd, resembling a DeLorean from the past more than a conventional pickup truck. It is designed to offer the utility of a truck and the performance of a sports car. It is built to be durable, versatile and capable, with exceptional performance both on-road and off-road. Cybertruck will come in three variants: Single Motor Rear-Wheel Drive, Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive and Tri Motor All-Wheel Drive. The unique vehicle is built with an exterior shell designed for durability and passenger protection. Starting with the exoskeleton, every component is designed for strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless steel structural skin to Tesla armor glass. The smooth monochrome exoskeleton helps eliminate dents, damage and long-term corrosion. Ultra-strong glass and polymerlayered composite can absorb and redirect impact force for improved performance and damage tolerance. The Cybertruck features up to 3,500 lbs. of payload capacity and adjustable air suspension. It is engineered with 100 cu. ft. of exterior lockable storage — including a tonneau cover that is strong enough to stand on. The promised towing capability is over 14,000 lbs. Here is a list of the available vehicle specs: ˜ Range: 500+ miles ˜ 0- to 60-mph acceleration: <2.9 seconds ˜ Towing capacity: More than 14,000 lbs. ˜ Payload: Up to 3,500 lbs. ˜ Vault length: 6.5 ft. ˜ Storage capacity: 100 cu. ft. of exterior lockable storage including the vault, trunk and sail pillars ˜ Suspension: 4 in. in either direction ˜ Touchscreen size: 17 in. ˜ Body: Ultra-Hard 30X ColdRolled stainless steel

˜ Seating capacity: Up to six

adults ˜ Charging: Can be charged at home, at Destination Charging locations and with Tesla’s network of more than 14,000 Superchargers, including on the newest V3 technology, which is helpful for long hauls and towing

TARGETING NICHE MARKETS WITH ELECTRIC There are a few companies targeting niche, low-volume markets with electric pickup offerings. These include Bollinger Motors and Workhorse Group. Bollinger Motors is targeting high-end off-road enthusiasts, while Work Horse Group is targeting commercial applications. Former industrial designer Robert Bollinger recently displayed updated prototypes of the B1 electric SUV and B2 electric pickup. The first iterations of these vehicles were unveiled nearly two years ago. Retail deliveries are anticipated in 2021. These vehicles promise allwheel drive, dual electric motors, 15 in. of ground clearance, self-leveling suspension and four-door, four-seat cabs. They promise 200 miles of range. Bollinger has published preliminary performance specifications of 614 hp and 668 lbs.-ft. of torque. Payload is a claimed 5,200 lbs. and towing capacity is 7,500 lbs. These trucks and SUVs target true enthusiasts who are willing to pay for performance. Bollinger admits that these vehicles will have a high purchase price, but he doesn’t envision the company becoming a volume producer. Workhorse Group is on the opposite end of the spectrum. The company is specifically targeting commercial applications. Its primary product is an electric delivery van and it is developing the W-15, which is designed from the ground up to be an allelectric pickup. Workhorse Group has proven success in the electric vehicle market. The E-100 and E-GEN electric delivery vans have racked up more than 4 million miles and are currently used by some of the premier package delivery companies. The company is

hoping this success translates to electric pickup sales. The W-15 currently has over 5,000 fleet pre-orders. The W-15 features a lithium ion battery that provides up to 80 miles of range. It is a lightweight, purpose-built fleet vehicle with a 5,000-lb. curb weight. It features composite construction and a 5,000-lb. towing capacity. A lower center of gravity and all-wheel drive improve off-road handling. It also offers 7.2-kW power export capability. One thing that should be clear, the half-ton marketplace is

www.ForConstructionPros.com

ET0120_42-45_Trucks_ElectricPickup_BC.indd 45

very competitive and there will be electric options in the not so distant future. These trucks will start as niche products and expand as the charging infrastructure expands and production reaches a critical mass that allows prices to come down. As you can see from the performance data shared, towing and payload are not the limitations. If Rivian holds true to its promise of a 400-plus mile range, and Tesla to more than 500 miles, then the remaining critical piece comes down to the charging infrastructure. ET

Still Key to INTELLIGENT Quality Asphalt COMPACTION Pavements

IC ensures compaction is performed consistently, thoroughly and accurately.

e, bs, y”

I

n the realm of road construction, compaction is considered one of the most important processes in pavement and roadway surface construction. It is necessary in order to attain high quality and uniformity of pavement materials, which in turn better ensures long-lasting performance of the road. It has been more than a few years since the term and method of “intelligent compaction” (IC) has become a given in discussions of paving. IC refers to the compaction of road materials,

such as soils, aggregate bases or asphalt pavement materials, using modern vibratory rollers equipped with an integrated measurement system, onboard computer reporting system, global positioning system (GPS) based mapping and optional feedback control. IC rollers facilitate real-time compaction monitoring and timely adjustments to the compaction process by integrating measurement, documentation and control systems. They also maintain a continuous record of color-coded plots, allowing the

user to view plots of the precise location of the roller, the number of roller passes and material stiffness measurements. “Operators have told me that IC takes the guessing game out of their rolling pattern,” says Daniel F. Brown, president of Phend & Brown, Inc., Milford, IN. “They no longer need to remember which utility power pole or mailbox they started or stopped at with their rolling pattern. Additionally, uniform pass coverage is assured because pass coverage is being measured and documented.”

IC BEGINNINGS AND FUTURE Phend & Brown is currently running Topcon C-53 IC Systems on two Caterpillar CB-534 D XW rollers, as well as two BOMAG BW190 AD rollers. “At the time of purchase, the C-53, which offers the GX-55 control box, was the newest technology available,” Brown notes. “We like that the technology provides for remote mobile access via Sitelink to allow process balance decisions to be based on real-time data for the entire paver/roller operation — which in turn ensures that optimal production rates and density values are consistently achieved.” Topcon Positioning Systems offers an IC system that is designed to track pass counts of multiple rollers or IC machines working on the same project. Through secure connectivity to the global Sitelink3D service, each compactor not only performs its tasks but also becomes part of the overall monitored project. “Each operator is not only able to see their own passes, but those made by other machines onscreen in real time,” Brown says. “And in real time, the paving superintendant, foreman and general contractor personnel can also see exactly what is going on via the Sitelink platform. This ensures proper compaction from each machine and eliminates redundancy.”

COMPACTION EQU IPMENT The IC system is designed to: Leverage multiple integrated temperature sensors, so each compactor can achieve consistent results through constant feedback into the system Provide accurate pass counts, geographic locations of each run, as well as georeferenced task assignments and their completion via its GNSS technology Ensure that regulatory IC standards are being met by documenting surface stiffness values through its accelerometer Connect to the Sitelink3D Enterprise service, which provides 24/7 access to project data, team collaboration, custom reporting, as well as standard export to Veta management and analysis software, which can provide additional customized information Provide data to demonstrate specification compliance and confirm proper density claims

GREATER CONTROL ENSURES SPEC COMPLIANCE “We’re using the Topcon C-53 IC System with a GX-75 control box on our 850 Series Sakai oscillation/vibration paving roller, which allows the machine operator to monitor the compaction pattern and the temperature as they’re working,” says Sergio Muniz, paving superintendent at Payne & Dolan, Inc., Waukesha, WI. “I like that

The key benefit of intelligent compaction is greater control over the compaction results, which in turn provides better finished paved results.

“I LIKE THAT I CAN JUMP ONTO MY LAPTOP AND SEE THE WORK BEING COMPLETED IN REAL TIME AND MAKE CERTAIN WE’RE COMPLYING WITH THE TOUGH DOT STATE SPECIFICATIONS.” I can jump onto my laptop and see the work being completed in real time and make certain we’re complying with the tough DOT state specifications.” He adds, “We’re finding the Topcon system to be essential for our high-profile big jobs to ensure we remain on task, and is instrumental for when we work at night. It is proving handy for smaller parking lot-type jobs, as well.” The key benefit of IC is greater control over the compaction results, ensuring optimum densities are uniformly achieved and provide adequate support, stability and strength. This, in turn, provides a better finished paved product. ET

Maintain People & Equipment Like

YOUR PROFITS DEPEND ON IT Maintaining both personnel and equipment performance can be the difference between profit and loss.

discuss ideas with peers who have installed upgrades into their systems and inquire about intended and actual payback on their investment. Times are changing in the construction industry. Pricing is sure to become much more competitive if you are bidding against “high-tech” companies that have invested in both systems and training. Maintain your field personnel in a similar fashion. Establish a funnel to attract workers to the company. Train them with your current equipment and make sure they are trained properly on the rental equipment you use. Have your local equipment dealers introduce new models and features to field personnel, who can then report back to management if significant benefits are available. Field personnel and field management should be given current and timely information on where they stand in the project production plan so that additional effort can be applied if needed to get back on track. There are many reasonably priced systems to aid in tracking project progress, hours worked on specific jobs or hours worked by machines in the field.

ASSESS HOW YOU MAINTAIN OWNED EQUIPMENT

C

onstruction work requires more skill Major refurbishing to be profitable when compared to work should be other types of companies. Each job discussed with your is different and may wind up with a dealer to determine different crew requiring special skills. Your whether it may ability to complete the work often depends on someone else’s ability to get their work actually be cheaper completed. Weather can delay a project. to have the work Costs keep bouncing around. A job may performed by qualified require special equipment that you don’t dealer technicians. own. Owned equipment must be ready to go and provide a 90% uptime percentage. Mix this all together with the competitive environment many contractors find themselves in and there is very little room left for inefficiency on the jobsite. Small errors or problems can quickly turn a profitable job into a loss on the books and a deficit in the bank account. To avoid problems in the field, your estimators need to provide doable, profitable bids. Labor and equipment must then execute according to plan to meet the budget in terms of costs and timelines. And finally, management must close out the job and collect for work performed.

MAINTAIN YOUR TEAM WITH TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY In today’s technological world, even if you execute all the above, continuous maintenance of profit-generating areas is a must. There are essentially three basic performance areas to consider: ˜ Pre-Field Work — Internal personnel who plan and price out the work ˜ Field Work — Execution by labor and equipment ˜ Post-Field Work — Close out the job, compare results to bid and planning documents and note potential improvements for similar projects going forward Maintain your internal personnel with constant training and exposure to new products and services that make their work more efficient and meaningful. Personnel should attend conferences and off-site industry-specific training whenever possible, with a goal of returning to the office with new ideas and performance goals to gain traction as a result of technology such as artificial intelligence. To gain further insight into new opportunities, management should

54  EQUIPM ENT T ODAY | January 2020 ET0120_54-56_RuntheBiz_BC.indd 54

Your equipment will in all probability make you or break you on almost every job you start. If your owned equipment is not maintained to provide 90% uptime, you are behind the eight-ball right off the bat. And if you don’t make arrangements to have any required specialty equipment on site when you need it, you won’t attain the performance results anticipated, and the job is most likely to break even or produce a loss. Owned equipment maintenance is high on the priority list when it comes to meeting field performance goals. A full maintenance plan using OEM-suggested maintenance standards is where you start. In addition, someone in the shop should be responsible for maintaining the schedule and reporting back to management that the internal maintenance work has been completed. Major work requiring a formal overhaul or replacement should be scheduled for your slow period (if you have one). However, having this work completed by technicians who aren’t qualified to do what is required may upset your 90% uptime requirement. Major refurbishing work should be discussed with your dealer to determine what technology is required to do it “right,” how much the parts or components will cost compared to what you would pay for them and the numbers of hours required to do the work. In many cases, it will be cheaper in both the short and long run to have the major work performed by qualified dealer techs, where you can probably get some sort of warranty for the work performed. In short, owned equipment must be: ˜ managed, maintained and ready to go as needed, ˜ maintained based on your schedule in the field, ˜ and replaced once the combined cost to own and operate plus the cost of downtime exceeds 30% of the cost of a new unit. If you are going to maintain your owned fleet, then maintain it as if it is a matter of making a profit or generating a loss. Time is money and that goes for both field personnel and equipment on the jobsite. Times are also changing, and you cannot perform a job with a poorly maintained fleet and hope to remain competitive.
