Change Your Mind About Millennials This is part one of a blog highlighting comments made on workforce development at the 2019 AED (Associated Equipment Distributors) Summit in Orlando, FL.

Becky Schultz / bschultz@acbusinessmedia.com

ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES facing the construction industry today is a shrinking labor force. The aging workforce, coupled with changing priorities among today’s workers, has made retaining and securing talent increasingly difficult.

According to “This Is Why Millennials Care so Much About Work-Life Balance” by Ryan Jenkins (https://bit.ly/2mbAnya), today’s workforce has a different mind set than most working professionals in past generations — they are “never offline and always available,” meaning the line

between work life Vladimir Obradovic/iStock/ Getty Images Plus and home life has become blurred. For this “always on” generation, a company’s ability to offer a healthy worklife balance can be a compelling advantage in a tight job market. This balance typically calls for greater flexibility in working hours and location, quality of life-related benefits (e.g., health insurance, paid vacations, etc.) and meaningful work with advancement opportunities. Your mind set about when and where work is done may have to change, as well. “If you look at some of the things the younger generation is looking for in terms of work-life balance and work time flexibility, you can build business models around how to use that to your advantage,” advised Michael Ballweber, senior vice president – Commercial Business, Doosan Bobcat Inc. “Look at it as an opportunity as opposed to saying, ‘That doesn’t fit with what we’ve typically done’.” Take skilled service technicians, a commodity hard for both dealers and contractors to come by. “If you have technicians who want to work from noon to 8 p.m. rather than 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., how do you use that in your business to your advantage, rather than saying, ‘It doesn’t fit with what we like to do?’” asked Ballweber.

Also maintain an open mind about how such work is performed. “We do have to fix machines,” said Jason Daly, global director, marketing & support, John Deere Construction & Forestry Company. “But it doesn’t have to be the means of fixing machines that we’ve done in the past. There could smarter ways.” It’s important to make those in roles such as service technicians see the value in what they do — and that you recognize that value, too. “It’s very important for [them] to understand that you rate this job high,” said Peter Mayr, president, Liebherr Construction Equipment Co. “It’s a very straightforward job. You go out in the morning and fix a machine, you see it up and running and you are satisfied with it and go home.” Yet, beyond satisfaction at a job well done, techs need to feel that their role is highly regarded — and that they are paid accordingly. “It’s a very different job for young people, and we have to make sure they understand how much we appreciate them doing that job.” ET

Heavy-duty Pickups & Chassis Cabs TAKE CENTER STAGE

Driver assist technologies, upgraded powertrains and increased capability define the latest generation of heavy-duty models.

ovember through March marks the automotive trade show season where manufacturers pull the wraps off the latest products. Manufacturers typically show major updates to either their light-duty or heavy-duty offerings while announcing minor updates to the other product lines. This year was the year of the heavy-duty pickups and chassis cabs, with all of the commercial-focused suppliers rolling out major redesigns, and one even showing a new nameplate.

12  EQU IPMENT T ODAY | April 2019 ET0419_12-16_Trucks_CB.indd 12

Let’s look at the latest offerings from Ford, Ram Trucks, Chevrolet and GMC.

FORD OFFERS NEW ENGINES, EXPANDS TECHNOLOGY Ford is adding new engines, greater connectivity and smart driver-assist technology across its commercial vehicle lineup (www.ForConstructionPros. com/21049846). In terms of connectivity, all commercial vehicles are updated with standard modems with 4G LTE Wi-Fi that accommodate up to 10 devices. Ford Telematics and Ford Data Services are also available across the lineup. Realizing most customers have invested in their own legacy telematics solutions, the company offers customers the power of choice to use Ford OEM telematics software, integrate the

telematics data generated by the vehicle with the company’s existing telematics providers or take vehicle data directly into their own IT systems. Smart driver assist technologies include automatic emergency braking, which is available across the lineup. Ford

Co-pilot 360 technologies are also available. For the F-650 and F-750, traction control, hill start assist and auto headlamps are standard. Optional elements include adaptive cruise control, electronic stability control, lane departure warning, Driver Alert System and auto high-beam headlamps. The Super Duty chassis cab adds standard auto high-beam headlamps and available lane departure warning. Engine options include a new 7.3-liter V8 gasoline engine that generates more torque and power than the 6.8-liter V10 engine it replaces. The pushrod engine uses a new cam-in-block, overhead valve architecture with

cast iron block and forged steel crankshaft for durability. Port injection with variable valve timing optimizes the intake and

exhaust to match performance with workload, while oil jets cool the pistons under heavy loads. A third-generation 6.7-liter

Power Stroke Diesel is available across the lineup. It includes a new 36,000-psi fuel injection system with injectors that precisely meter and spray up to eight times per stroke to control noise levels and optimize combustion. This inboard exhaust diesel V8 features a redesigned electronic-actuated variablegeometry turbocharger that provides improved pumping efficiency and throttle response. Structural enhancements increase the strength of the cylinder head, block, connecting rods and bearings to handle higher cylinder pressure and increased output. Steel pistons provide higher firing pressure capability and less friction, meaning improved performance and more horsepower and torque. Super Duty chassis customers can also choose the existing 6.2liter gas V8. While it is rare for Ford to introduce a new nameplate to its long-running Super Duty lineup, the company found a niche with an F-600, which offers a maximum GVWR of 22,000 lbs. Available in 2020, it fills a gap between the company’s current F-550 and the larger F-650. The F-600 Super Duty chassis cab offers an alternative for customers who need additional payload or need to mount heavier upfits but don’t want to move into a larger truck. Although the overall vehicle is the same size as an F-550, the F-600 uses upgraded driveline, brake and chassis components, as well as higher weight-rated 19.5-in. tires and wheels. The F-600 can be ordered in early 2020 and will be available in mid-2020.

Ram Trucks now offers an optional 6.7-liter Cummins High Output turbo diesel with 1,000 lbs.-ft. of torque available from first gear on up. It allows the Ram 3500 with Aisin six-speed transmission to pull trailers weighing up to 35,100 lbs.

RAM TRUCKS UPS TOWING AND PAYLOAD ANTE People buying heavy-duty pickups are really interested in capability. To up the ante, Ram Trucks now offers the new 6.7liter Cummins High Output turbo diesel, which pumps out 1,000 lbs.-ft. of torque available from first gear on up. It allows the Ram 3500 with Aisin sixspeed transmission to pull trailers weighing up to 35,100 lbs.

Steel pistons provide higher firing pressure capability and less friction, meaning improved performance and more horsepower and torque. For customers who prefer gasoline power, the standard engine is a 410-hp, 6.4-liter Hemi mated to an eight-speed transmission that produces 429 lbs.-ft. of torque. Maximum payload has been increased to 7,690 lbs. To handle the increased loads, Ram designed the braking system with upgrades to calipers, booster and master cylinder. This helps shorten stopping distances, increases capability and improves brake feel. Heavy-duty pickups have a reputation for a stiff ride, especially when unladen. In the past, this was an accepted price for the payload and towing capability. Ram Trucks has been attempting to eliminate this trade-off, introducing a fivelink coil suspension on the 2500 that replaced the leaf spring system, while the Ram 3500 uses a Hotchkiss rear leaf spring system with optional air suspension. By adding supplemental air bags, engineers were able to soften the heavy load leaf springs, allowing for more unladen suspension movement.

Innovations on the next generation of heavy-duty pickups provide increased visibility with multiple camera views and radar that allow you to “see” vehicles and objects near the truck or trailer. Image source: Ram Trucks

For 2019, Ram Trucks introduces Frequency Response Damping (FRD) shocks on all four corners. The valves of an FRD shock automatically adjust for the type of vertical wheel input, allowing a supple suspension on rough terrain. The addition of progressive springs on the trucks allows a softer, more comfortable ride when not loaded due to the soft initial rate and higher load capability due to the increased stiffness in the latter portion of the spring rate.

Anyone who has purchased a heavyduty truck within the last five years is aware that the technology revolution is changing customer expectations. The camera on the tailgate also has grid lines and zoom, so if you are hooking up a tag trailer with a pintle or ball, you can back right up and you don’t need a spotter. There are also many built-in safety features — such as forward collision warning with braking — that are moving up from smaller trucks. The trucks also have adaptive cruise control with braking that works even when hauling a 35,000-lb. trailer. Blind spot warning helps you keep track of the vehicles around you. And there are 360˚ and surround view cameras. A camera is located in each mirror so you can see the side view. When you are pulling a trailer, there is another view that you can pull up. It gives you a split pane view down the side of your trailer. When you are trying to back up, that camera actually gives you an extended view and you can pan that to the right or left to see where you are headed with the trailer. Also in the mirrors are spotter lights that shine light down the side of the trailer as you are backing up. One safety concern when pulling loaded trailers is tire pressure. Ram has a unique solution: trailer tire pressure monitoring. You can add up to 12 sensors per trailer for up to four trailers to get warnings when the tire pressure is 10% below the determined threshold. Ram provides six distinct trim offerings, from the work-focused Tradesman (www.ForConstructionPros. com/20997066) to the luxurious Longhorn and Limited models. Ram has tried to tailor its products to meet individual customer needs.

CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD OFFERS WIDER, TALLER STANCE The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD increases towing capability across the lineup compared to 2019. Maximum towing capability increases 52% to an available 35,500 lbs. This greater capability is driven by chassis and suspension enhancements and new propulsion combinations. The foundation for the new truck is an enhanced version of the Silverado HD’s ladderframe design, with boxed rails that improve strength and contribute to a smooth ride. It’s a heavier-duty frame compared to the current model, designed to handle the truck’s higher loads, including a higher gross combined vehicle weight rating (GCWR) of up to 43,500 lbs. on properly equipped trucks. To handle the increased towing capability, the upgraded driveline includes larger front and rear axles, a standard 11.5-in. ring gear on 2500HD models, and a 12-in. ring gear on 3500HD diesel models. Also, 30% larger diameter prop shafts provide greater strength with the high torque output of the new 6.6L gas engine and the Duramax Turbo-Diesel. Helping cool the Duramax engine is a massive 28-in.-diameter fan — 2.5 in. larger than the current design — with variable fan speed. SITE ASSESSMENT By Gregg Wartgow

How GPS Rovers Improve Project Management Technology provides the ability to accurately measure projects, monitor progress and maintain quality control.

G

PS-based technologies help construction companies in a range of ways. One end of the GPS spectrum is something as simple as equipment location tracking. At the other end is automated machine control. Somewhere in between, technologically, is the use of GPS rovers to measure features on a project site with near-survey accuracy in just minutes.

Rovers, such as this Topcon HiPer HR GNSS receiver, can measure most features on a jobsite (ncluding stockpile volumes) for gauging production and predicting resource needs.

18  EQUIPMENT T OD AY | April 2019 ET0419_18-20_TechTrends_CB.indd 18

A rover is a small GPS receiver with data collecting, and usually transmitting, capability. Its ability to quickly and inexpensively measure and report work in progress offers contractors enhanced insights into their production. Generally, a rover works in combination with a satellite base station located somewhere on or near the jobsite. That stationary base station improves the accuracy of a rover’s position data. “GPS on the typical cellphone provides accuracy in the 3- to 30-meter range,” says Casey Cyrus, business area manager for site positioning systems, Trimble. When grading and excavating, 3 to 30 meters is not accurate enough. “You need that base station and correction stream to really dial in the accuracy of the site positioning. With today’s rovers, we’re talking about less than an inch horizontal and slightly more than an inch vertical — about the size of a golf ball.” In some instances, a base station may no longer be necessary. “With strong cellphone signals available in more areas today, you can sometimes walk anywhere with a rover and connect to the internet without needing a base station,” says Javier Ramirez, professional services lead, Topcon Positioning Group. “One option is using a network like our TopNET. And sometimes a municipality might offer CORS stations (continuously operating reference stations). This can be a good thing for a construction crew that doesn’t want to have to set up that base station in the morning.” Base station or not, the accuracy relates to latitude and longitude position as well as elevation. Civil construction tends to focus on creating elevations that ensure controlled water drainage. “If we can do that to

within an inch, in most cases that is accurate enough for preparing driveways, road surfaces, and really all types of construction projects,” Cyrus points out.

THE ABILITY TO MEASURE A SITE TO GOLF BALL-SIZE ACCURACY IN A VERY SHORT TIME CAN ALSO BE USED TO MONITOR PROJECT PROGRESS. The ability to measure a site to golf ball-size accuracy in a very short time can also be used to monitor project progress. Using rovers to measure work in progress gives project managers a better understanding of material use and, as importantly, material, labor and equipment needs.

MORE SATELLITES, MORE RELIABILITY When choosing a rover system, constellation support is a crucial feature. The common term “GPS” (Global Positioning System) only tells part of the story. Today’s rovers also pull positioning data from other satellite constellations. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) includes not only GPS satellites, but also GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and others. “The more satellites [your rover] can see, the stronger your positioning data will be,” says Cyrus. “Also, if you ever lose connection with one satellite, you can keep on going. And if you’re ever working in a heavily

wooded area, you might not have as great a line of sight to the sky. Working off of multiple satellite systems helps.” “The good thing about GNSS rover technology is that it is proven,” Ramirez adds. “Productivity has been a huge factor in the adoption of this technology and hardware.”

HOW THEY’RE USED IN CONSTRUCTION A common rover application is to measure grade. A single grade checker with a rover can walk a site, capturing elevation measurements at any point. “Everything on the display screen tells them exactly what needs to be done,” Ramirez says. “The jobsite becomes a digital representation in their field controller device. They can see where they are at any given moment. They can also see important information like cuts or fills to finish grade or subgrade. A rover does all of this in one simple step.” Tony Dalla is an estimator with T&R Concrete Excavation in Parker, CO. Dalla helped spearhead the company’s adoption of Trimble rover technology and satellite-guided machine control over the past year. Working for an 11-year-old company in growth mode, Dalla says the T&R team has yet to put actual pen to paper to calculate the ROI. That said, the positive impact on both productivity and profitability has been obvious. “Once we have the project model set up on the computer, we can check grade at any point,” he relates. “We are not surveyors, but we can get a lot of work done before they show up; then they just need to confirm that we did it correctly. We’re confident that we’ll always be within spec on final grade. Sometimes it’s a tiny bit of touch-up work here or there, but the process is really sped up thanks to the rovers.” Dalla shares a story of how rovers helped complete a rework project the company was recently awarded. “A client was having some issues with drainage and wanted us to get it right for them. We went to the site with our rover. We saw that the perimeter was correct, but the interior wasn’t,” he explains. “We used the rover to capture data on the perimeter. From there,

we created a design for what the final surface should be, which allowed us to determine how much fill we would have to dispose of to get the final grade right. In a relatively short time, we had a fairly detailed number on how much work it would take to do this project.” Measuring stockpiles is another common application. An individual can take a rover and walk around the perimeter of the stockpile to capture its size, then walk up the slope to take shots of both sides to determine its height. Software accompanying the rover calculates the volume of material in that stockpile.

equipment to count the cuts and fills over the course of a day.” Locating jobsite features is another practical application. A digital model of the project identifies things like sewer lines, edges of buildings, curbs and medians. The rover helps pinpoint those locations so they can be staked out in much quicker fashion. A user simply views the digital project plan on a mobile device, and then follows their satellite position until they reach the desired feature.

HOW THEY’RE DEPLOYED One method to deploy a rover is to carry it in a backpack.

ONCE WE HAVE THE PROJECT MODEL SET UP ON THE COMPUTER, WE CAN CHECK GRADE AT ANY POINT.”

Trimble’s SPS986 GNSS Smart Antenna can function as either a rover or base station. “A report can be created based on that data,” Ramirez says. “There are also cloud solutions that allow the data to go from the field to a web service to be shared from there.” T&R Concrete Excavation uses its rovers to measure stockpiles. “This is very helpful if we’re the second contractor on a project,” Dalla notes. “When someone has already done the overlot and needs someone to haul off whatever the spoils are going to be, we can predict that to a pretty solid degree of certainty.” Construction firms can also use rovers to measure the amount of material being moved around a jobsite. “You could put rovers on trucks to count the haul trips,” Ramirez explains. “You can even have sensors on

The challenge is that the height of the rover above ground is not constant; it varies every time the person carrying it takes a step. “This method is OK if all that is needed is a rough grade,” Cyrus says. “This method can also be used for bulk earthmoving and measuring stockpiles.” Rovers can also be mounted on a pole, which provides a more constant height of instrument (HI). “In Trimble’s case, we have a 2-meter pole below the rover,” says Cyrus. “That pole sets on the ground to provide the most accuracy... We can take a measurement, take a few steps and take another measurement, and continue that to cover the entire surface in a grid. From there, we can create a surface model so we can do volume calculations day

www.ForConstructionPros.com

ET0419_18-20_TechTrends_CB.indd 19

by day. Then we can see how far we still need to go to the design surface. We can say we need X amount of material brought in, or perhaps X amount taken out. You can also decide which equipment is best suited to whatever needs to be done.” GPS rovers can be mounted on vehicles, as well. Like the pole-mounted rovers, there is a constant HI, plus the vehicle-mounted method is faster, making it ideal for measuring larger sections of a construction site or locating jobsite features. The challenge is a proneness to error on sloped surfaces. That’s where a newer rover

method comes into play: vehicular-mounted with IMU (inertial measurement unit), which helps to identify a vehicle’s angular rate. “We recently launched this type of technology with dynamic tilt functionality,” says Cyrus. “We’ve taken the rover that was mounted to a truck, but can now measure down at the angle of the vehicle’s tilt to project straight down to the wheels and surface below the vehicle to build the surface from that. In this scenario, we get better accuracy on sloped surfaces.” Cyrus offers the following example to explain the benefits of IMU technology. On a 20° slope at 2 meters high, there would be an error of roughly 13 cm using a vehicle-mounted rover without IMU. With IMU,

applicability. So is integration with total stations, which is also starting to happen. “When rover data integrates with total station data, that typical half-inch error of a rover is basically eliminated,” he points out.

GETTING DATA TO DECISION MAKERS

Rovers can be deployed in various ways, including mounted on vehicles. Trimble’s T10 tablet collects and views site data using the Windows 10 Enterprise operating system, and has a 10-in. screen for viewing maps and designs and preparing and sharing progress reports. that error is reduced to 13 mm. “This allows you to drive a large section of property and accurately create the original ground,” Cyrus says. “From that, you can compare the original ground

surface to the proposed design and get volume calculations.” Topcon also offers rovers with integrated IMU sensors. Ramirez says integration with IMU is an important step forward for rover

The data that a rover collects is only useful if it is readily available to the project managers who need it. There are multiple ways of disseminating rover data. “A rover isn’t just a GPS head,” Cyrus notes. “Trimble is using Windows 10 Professional data collectors. We’re using 7and 10-in. tablets with high processing power, 7-in. survey controllers with a full keyboard, as well as hand devices similar to a cell phone. In other words, the user has choices.” In each case, data points are collected and the software performs volume calculations and comparisons on the spot. “If you want to send that information to the office, cloudbased software allows you to,” says Cyrus. “People in the office can stitch reports together based on data sets from several surveyors, or even conduct further analytics such as mass haul. For example, the crew has a lot of cut in this area and a lot of fill down road. How much cut from this section will they need to haul to that other zone, and what’s the surplus or deficit? Do I need to source more material? You could even determine how many haul trucks you are going to need.” Topcon’s field controller is also a Windows 10 device. Various apps and software allow field workers and office staff to share files, such as jobsite design files, back and forth. Field workers can capture site measurement data throughout the project and share that data with office staff, general contractors and other stakeholders. The larger point is that the data is real-time, and it’s accurate — helping you to improve productivity, quality and cost control. ET

WHEN ROVER DATA INTEGRATES WITH TOTAL STATION DATA, THAT TYPICAL HALF-INCH ERROR OF A ROVER IS BASICALLY ELIMINATED.” 20  EQU IPM ENT T OD AY | April 2019 ET0419_18-20_TechTrends_CB.indd 20

OTHER SITE MEASURING TECHNOLOGIES There are other types of technology available to help you to measure and manage projects, each with its pluses and minuses. In the case of a total station, Topcon’s Casey Cyrus says you can get to an accuracy level of 1/8th inch. “A robotic total station follows a pole with a prism on it, or the machine with the cutting edge on it, which helps get down to that really smooth surface for concrete paving and checking concrete surfaces,” he says. “So when looking for the smoothest ride possible, go with a total station. The big drawback is that you need to maintain line of sight to the total station. With a rover, all you need is line of sight to the sky, which most construction sites have.” Drones have also been increasingly popular in construction, though their accuracy varies. “When using proper techniques, you can achieve golf ball-size accuracy with respect to elevation,” says Cyrus. “You can also get more data faster than walking or driving a surface. You can get data for about every inch as opposed to the typical 10-ft. grid. That helps capture all of those surface undulations that might get missed. The big drawback with drones is that you need good weather in order to fly them and capture your data points.” Rovers can actually go to the extreme of gridding a property at an inch. However, there is rarely an instance where somebody would want that level of detail. “There’s a balance there,” Cyrus states. “What is the data you’re really after? Is a drone-based surface model too much? Many times it is. The data has to be thinned down to that 1- to 10-meter grid, depending on the total size of the surface, so today’s computers can process the data.” One other site measuring method is photogrammetry, which is using photos to create points and measure distances. This method is not as accurate, but as Cyrus points out, it all depends on what you’re after. “If you’re simply looking to replace stockpile measurements and don’t want to walk the stockpiles, photogrammetry could be an option,” he says.

NJ Surveyors Harness the POWER OF DRONES

SAFER, MORE EFFICIENT DATA CAPTURE Unlike traditional surveying or photogrammetric surveying performed with a pole-mounted camera, UAV surveys can be performed without interfering with traffic flow or placing surveyors close to dangerous conditions near rivers and roadways. The use of a UAV increases data gathering opportunities — most notably in locations previously difficult or dangerous to access. Dresdner Robin uses a professional-grade UAV that can ascend rapidly and reach speeds up to 50 mph. However, most survey applications utilize slower speeds to enhance photo quality.

Dresdner Robin recently used its UAV equipment to gather overlapping photographs of three rivers in the Borough of Pompton Lakes. Images captured by UAVs have a become a cost-saving part of the documentation for a FEMA program.

Dresdner Robin’s UAV is equipped with a 20-megapixel camera with a mount that allows for independent positioning and rotation. The altitude of the flight is determined by the dimensions of the area to be surveyed and the angle of the camera lens, which can be changed, depending on the project.

Images provided by Dresdner Robin

Site surveying with UAVs saves both cost and time in waterway assessment.

S

urveyors are harnessing the power of drone technology by focusing on at-risk riparian areas of northern New Jersey. In fact, images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become part of the documentation for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program that saves Pompton Lakes residents hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on flood insurance premiums. Land-use consultancy Dresdner Robin, Jersey City, NJ, recently worked with the Borough of Pompton Lakes utilizing image-capture flights to gather overlapping photographs of three rivers in the borough. The firm has since been involved in various mapping projects. Greg Gloor, Dresdner Robin survey director, volunteered on a project to assess Pompton Lakes’ flood-prone waterways. Gloor flew 11 individual flights over the rivers, 215 ft. above the water level. The UAV moved at 10 mph and used a

15-mm fixed-zoom lens to capture 60-ft. sections of the terrain. Images were snapped every two seconds (1,042 total) and were later analyzed to locate obstructions in the river channel. The photos aided a stream cleaning project that is part of the borough’s flood mitigation program.

“Assisting a borough that houses three rivers, which can pose a threat to homes and other structures, is rewarding,” says Gloor. “Historically, the flood threat can be quite active here. But this emerging technology helps mitigate it.”

CUTTING FLOOD INSURANCE COSTS

Gloor’s work has helped expand similar waterway assessments in the state, including the Ramapo River in Oakland, NJ. There, both video and still photography — which includes the adjacent tributaries — is used to assess river conditions for restorative work with the state. As flooding continues to plague areas of northern New Jersey, especially following a particularly wet 2018, surveyors anticipate the need for survey and data acquisition of river corridors to rise. “These river channels present unique challenges for access and safety,” Gloor says. “Dresdner Robin has been utilizing the capabilities of UAVs to provide critical data on river conditions to flood-prone communities in North Jersey.” ET

The UAV-collected data was also submitted as part of Pompton Lakes’ application to FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS) program. Waterway assessment is a key component of the CRS program, and active participation saves the borough’s residents over $300,000 on flood insurance premiums. Outside of cost benefits, the UAV program also saved the borough’s volunteers hundreds of hours of “first-hand” analysis time, according to Erik DeLine, Pompton Lakes Councilman. The drones “produced stunningly clear imagery, which enabled us to fully understand and prioritize which hazards needed to be cleared, providing an invaluable service to our residents.”

Backhoe-loaders Continue

EVOLUTION TREND

T

he modern backhoe-loader traces its lineage to a hydraulic digging attachment developed in the late 1940s. Lee Horton and Dave Willens, co-authors of Wain-Roy and the Invention of the Backhoe (www.originalbackhoe.com), conducted extensive research into the history of this machine and the associated patents. According to Horton, Vaino J. Holopainen and Roy E. Handy Jr. invented the first backhoe swing frame in early 1947 while experimenting with a hydraulic digging apparatus they had built for the rear of a tractor. Holopainen subsequently filed patent No. 2,698,697.

EARLIEST HYDRAULICS Construction machinery originally relied on cables and pulleys to actuate the digging bucket. In the late 1940s, hydraulic-powered machinery emerged with the development of hydraulic components and corresponding seals. “WainRoy made their own complete hydraulic cylinders,” notes Lee Horton. At the time, there were no elastomer seals available. Instead, the seals were made of rawhide that was compressed inside the cylinder to seal the piston. This meant these early systems couldn’t withstand pressures much more than 1,500 psi.

of 1948. The backhoes were first mounted to the then-popular Ford N-Series and Ferguson tractors. The company sold 24 units that first year. Approximately 7,000 Wain-Roy backhoes were manufactured and sold between the fall of 1948 and early 1954, mainly though Ford tractor and implement dealers by partnership with Sherman Products of Royal Oak, MI. “In later years, in order to get more distribution, Wain-Roy made a deal with Ford,” says Horton. But Ford eventually ended up building the backhoes themselves, nearly putting Wain-Roy out of business. During the early years, WainRoy continued to develop

The swing frame allowed the hydraulic digging arm to swing to either side of the machine to dump the bucket load. “Roy came up with the swing frame idea and Vaino came up with the first rear-mounted hydraulic digger apparatus,” notes Horton. The patent also included the invention of a stabilizer bar to distribute the digging forces, which later evolved into individual outriggers also developed by Wain-Roy. The company founded by Holopainen and Handy in April of 1948, the Wain-Roy Corporation of Hubbardston, MA, began selling the first allhydraulic backhoes in October

HYDRAULIC TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES Advanced hydraulic and electronic systems enhance versatility. important backhoe technology including the actuated bucket, independent stabilizers, various high-capacity boom swing systems and the first reversible seat patent, filed by Vaino under patent No. 2,784,768. The company’s first tractor-loaderbackhoe (TLB) was a Wain-Roy backhoe mounted to a Frank G.

Hough model “HE” wheel loader in 1952. This TLB was for the Holden Massachusetts Water Department. Two Hough model wheel loaders, the “HE” and “HF”, were available with integrated Wain-Roy backhoes. Some basic concepts that still survive today were developed during this same time period.

More recent advancements in backhoe-loader development center on the hydraulic systems. “Case has been the first to introduce many of the newer features and functionality into backhoe-loaders that leverage hydraulics and control capabilities to simplify operation,” Ed Brenton asserts. Such features include: ˜˜ Pro Control, which allows for more precise boom swing and eliminates the time and effort in correcting overswing; ˜˜ Power Lift, which channels hydraulic power to the boom for a period of time to increase lifting capabilities; ˜˜ and Power Boost, which provides a momentary boost of increased hydraulic power — without decreasing engine rpm (so as not to affect speed/cycle times) — when the operator pushes a button on the left-hand backhoe joystick. “[The Power Boost] feature is ideal for digging through tough conditions, including hard clay, rock and frost,” Brenton adds. Many companies also offer push-button hydraulic power boost features to temporarily increase hydraulic lifting capacities. For instance, Deere & Company innovated a Lift Mode to assist with lifting and craning objects on the jobsite. “Rear backhoe lifting and craning activities on the John Deere machines can be boosted by Lift Mode,” says Brian Hennings, product marketing manager, backhoes and tractor loaders, John Deere Construction and Forestry. “At the push of a button, the 310SL HL, 410L and 710L can enable operators to increase lift capacity by 10% to 15% when needed, minimizing the need to reposition or reconnect to a different machine.” Load-sensing hydraulic systems have continued to increase overall machine efficiency while increasing performance. Caterpillar believes one of its most notable achievements has been the continued development and tuning of its load-sensing hydraulic infrastructure coupled with post pressure-compensated control valves. “We refer to it as flow sharing hydraulics,” says Dustin Adams, product application specialist, Caterpillar. “It provides superior control to our operators and allows them to multifunction the loader or backhoe implements without loss of power to the command functions.” Electrohydraulic advancements have also increased the flexibility of the control Early Case 300 “integrated” systems. “We have just introduced a new backhoe-loader hydraulic infrastructure that enables seat-mounted controls on the new 440 and 450,” says Adams. “The seat-mounted controls allow the operator to quickly switch from loader to backhoe operation without having to adjust the controls, thus reducing operator motions and improving efficiency and ergonomics.” Hydraulic systems can now be tailored to the applications. “The infrastructure enables programmable features such as operator control modes (response and modulation), loader kickout, return to dig and parallel lift,” notes Adams. “We have seen advances in technology on other Cat products such as small wheel loaders, skid-steer loaders and compact track loaders, and are now leveraging that technology on backhoe-loaders.” Advanced operator controls have made it easier for operators to run the machines in a multitude of operations. John Deere enables control of attachments from inside the cab. “An operator can quickly switch out various rear hydraulic attachments such as breakers, augers and plate compactors and select the proper gpm (gallons per minute) flow from the monitor inside the cab, all of which improves machine versatility and efficiency,” says Hennings. Case has overhauled much of the control performance/functionality of its joysticks to be more intuitive and less strenuous for the operator, says Brenton. These changes include three new switches on the loader joystick to simplify operation. A declutch trigger on the back of the joystick allows for simple operation while performing continuous/repetitive operations, such as loading trucks. A roller/rocker switch with a detent position can be locked in the forward position for use with attachments such as brooms and snowblowers. A F-N-R switch allows for quick and easy directional changes without ever taking a hand off the joystick. On the backhoe pilot control joysticks, new backhoe control roller switches have been added for auxiliary and Extendahoe control to allow for more intuitive control and improved metering.

SIZED FOR THE APPLICATION Emissions regulations have influenced backhoe-loader horsepower offerings. The aftertreatment systems required to meet the allowable emissions levels are determined by the power level of the engine. Engines under 56 kW (75 hp) are subject to different emissions regulations than more powerful engines, and the aftertreatment required is often simpler and less expensive. This has created a niche for these lower horsepower machines. Consequently, manufacturers such as Caterpillar and John Deere have specifically designed machines under the 56-kW power limit. For example, Caterpillar offers the 415F2 as an option to its more powerful 416F2 and John Deere offers its 310L EP backhoe as an option to its more powerful 310L. “With the implementation of EPA off-road emission regulations, some customers are willing to trade off horsepower for simpler engine technology at a lower price point,” says Brian Hennings. “The John Deere 310L EP leverages the flexibility of emissions requirements under the 56-kW power level to provide customers a highly reliable and productive backhoe alternative without additional aftertreatment components.” The shrinking size of jobsites has also impacted backhoe-loader design. “As work sites are getting smaller, particularly in built-up urban environments, new solutions are needed to work those sites efficiently and productively. To meet this demand, JCB has introduced new, smaller backhoe-loader products in North America,” says Diego Butzke. “In 2017, JCB launched the 3CX Compact, which is 35% smaller than a full-size backhoeloader, yet offers the power, productivity and breakout forces more commonly attributed to larger machines. In 2019, JCB previewed the new 1CXT, a powerful compact tracked backhoe-loader that is less than 6 ft. wide and 7 ft. 6 in. tall, allowing it to work where no other backhoe-loader can.” Another emerging trend is the need to engage more attachments — including skid-steer attachments — to enhance the versatility of the backhoe-loader and allow it to work in different applications. In addition, Butzke sees a trend toward more specialized variants. Examples of this are JCB’s Pothole Master, Pilingmaster and Wastemaster models, which are equipped for maximum efficiency at very specific tasks. “One of the primary ideas of the excavator and backhoe is the four-bar linkage at the bottom,” says Horton. That was invented by John Pilch, who started Ware Machine Works in Ware, MA. Pilch developed the first fourbar linkage to achieve greater bucket digging and dumping rotation, and filed for patent #2,678,741 in September 1950. The four-bar linkages were also used on the Wain-Roy backhoes after 1954. While Wain-Roy was making advancements in North America, JCB was paving the way for the future of the backhoe-loader in Europe. In 1948, JCB launched the first European hydraulic loader. The Major Loader was

a front loader designed to bolt onto a Fordson Major tractor. This was followed in 1953 with a backhoe having a 180˚ swing fitted to a tractor. Today, JCB has more than a 50% share of the global backhoe-loader market. “Throughout history, JCB has been a leader and innovator in backhoe-loader advancement, and launched some of the most significant technologies that have today become common features,” states Diego Butzke, backhoe-loader product manager, JCB North America. Such technologies include: ˜˜ in 1959, it developed dual levers to operate the backhoe end;

˜˜ in 1961, it offered a side-shift backhoe; ˜˜ servo joystick controls were launched in 1984; ˜˜ an articulated boom was produced in 1990, three-wheel steer (front wheel, all wheel, crab steer) in 1991 and powershift transmission in 1992; ˜˜ the world’s smallest backhoeloader (1CX) premiered in 1994; and more. Meanwhile, Case Construction Equipment was instrumental to North American backhoe-loader development. In 1957, Case produced the first “integrated” TLB in the U.S., with all components manufactured and warrantied by the same manufacturer.

EVOL U TION IN EARTHMOVING

“All of the backhoes until Case came along were pretty much attachments that were added to loaders or farm tractors,” Horton points out. “Case manufactured the very first fully integrated backhoe-loader, warrantied from the factory/OEM, and has been responsible for many of the first and most important advances that have served as the core of the backhoe market for decades,” states Ed Brenton, product marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment. In 1964, Elton B. Long of the J.I. Case Corporation filed patent No. 3,249,244 for the first extendible boom. “The Extendahoe was developed to

allow contractors to dig, reach and place items deeper/farther than they could before,” says Brenton. But the company didn’t stop there. “The over-center backhoe design was another Case first, and it provides a number of advantages to operation and transport, including better balance, a smoother ride and a lower transport height.” In January 1965, the introduction of the hydraulic thumb had a dramatic effect on productivity. In that year, Patent No. 3,273,729 was filed by Vaino Holopainen, and the thumb soon became a popular option. “The thumb was on about 50% of the machines,” says Horton. ET

Case developed the first fully integrated, factory warrantied backhoe-loader.

DIGGING INTO FUTURE INNOVATIONS Backhoe-loaders will continue to be an important machine in construction, offering unparalleled versatility. “We’re confident that the backhoe-loader will continue to maintain, if not slightly grow, its industry market share,” says Caterpillar’s Dustin Adams. “Our challenge is to develop a backhoe-loader that is versatile and compatible with various hydromechanical attachments. “Having the ability to optimize performance and increase machine utilization for various applications will make backhoes more desirable,” he continues. “Coupling versatility with machine technology and control without over-complicating the machine and maintaining simple digging performance will be the balance we are challenged to strike.” “There will always be a market for backhoe-loaders. It is a cornerstone equipment style that allows for easy transportation via roading and still provides extreme versatility for utilities, municipalities, general contractors and owner/operators who don’t require multiple units on a single site,” says Case’s Ed Brenton. “[Backhoe-loaders] can run the full gamut of attachments that you can run with both skid-steers/compact track loaders and mid-sized excavators — extremely valuable for those types of operations.” There will be some migration from backhoes down to a combination of a mini-excavator and a skid steer or compact track loader. “But we do not see that as an evolution that endangers the long-term viability of the backhoe platform,” says Brenton. “Conversely, with the added lifting and digging power we are currently building into backhoes — and with the extreme speed and maneuverability provided by a backhoe-loader over a steel-tracked excavator — we are seeing backhoes moving into applications where mid-sized excavators were previously preferred.” Look for future designs to offer more automotive-style features. “With the popularity of backhoe-loaders among owners/operators, and with a platform that most resembles the trucks these guys drive to and from the site every day, you will continue to see automotive influence built into the cabs and controls of these machines,” says Brenton. “This includes everything from the seat and fabric options up to the inclusion of Bluetooth radio and related functionality, as well as the continued focus on visibility and jobsite awareness.” The key to the product’s sustainability is versatility. “While the industry has been under pressure from alternative utility machines, many customers remain that require the versatility only offered from the backhoe,” says Brian Hennings, John Deere. “Key customer segments including underground utilities, site prep and local governments highly value the all-in-one jobsite tool that can be self-transported from jobsite to jobsite. Various types of buckets, couplers and attachments (e.g. breakers, thumbs, sweepers, 4-in-1 buckets, snow pushers, plate compactors, grapples, augers, etc.) continue to make it an indispensable, multi-functional tool that quickly gets the job done.” C urrent and (Perhaps) Future Advances in Backhoe-loaders www.ForConstructionPros.com/20983006

Automation is finding its way into backhoe-loader design, including driveline technology advancements. “The new Direct Drive functionality on Case S-type and H-type transmissions engages the engine and transmission directly for improved gradeability, faster roading speeds, improved fuel economy and faster travel times around the jobsite and between jobs,” says Ed Brenton. “The PowerDrive transmission maintains the existing auto shift feature as today and now includes an automated activation of the direct drive feature in third and fourth gears based on torque demand and conditions on the jobsite. “The goal of all of these upgrades is to allow the machine to respond better to site conditions and be more efficient/productive,” he adds. Automation takes many forms. “Feature suites such as JCB’s AutoMATE system improve operator safety and comfort, reduce downtime and enhance machine performance and productivity,” says Diego Butzke. “In recent years, JCB has invested heavily in developing autonomous functionality and features for backhoe-loaders (and other construction machines). Today, JCB’s backhoes are equipped with up to eight automated features that enhance operator comfort and machine performance.” S implified Controls Increase Backhoe Productivity www.ForConstructionPros.com/12057117

DIESEL IS STILL KING

But Options Gain Ground

least expensive option, so it is sometimes preferred,” Feudner comments. “We estimate that our liquid propane (LP) units can save an end user about 15% to 20% on fuel costs. But it really comes down to which fuel source is best suited to a specific application. Rental customers today definitely appreciate the flexibility to choose.” Kohler propane mobile generators can be utilized for most of the same applications as diesel fuel models. The onboard LP tank is built for a 24-hour run time, while connection to an external LP or natural gas supply offers extended usage. If propane runs out or isn’t available at the site, an optional onboard tank can be used to switch to an onsite fuel supply.

GREEN OPPORTUNITY

Alternatives to diesel remain less common but are making inroads in certain power source applications.

W

hen it comes to powering mobile generators, air compressors and other larger equipment in the construction industry, diesel still reigns supreme. Not to say there aren’t alternatives. In Europe, the high cost of fossil fuels, coupled with an economy and culture that is more “greenaware” than we are in the U.S., has helped advance the market for alternative energy sources. Conversely, the relatively low cost of gasoline and diesel in the U.S., and inertia, or an overall lack of incentive to adapt to different fuel sources, has slowed the growth in popularity of alternative fuels. “In many applications, including the use of generators in the [construction and] rental market, users are often more comfortable with diesel than other fuels,” says Michael Goche, director of product management, Generac Mobile. “They use diesel fuel for their other equipment, it is readily available and it is relatively inexpensive compared to converting to an alternative energy source.” “When Tier 4 technology was introduced into diesel engines, it

32  EQUIPM ENT T ODAY | April 2019 ET0419_32-33_PowerSources_CB.indd 32

was questionable whether or not consumers would pay the higher costs,” notes Jeremy Bailey, air products manager, Doosan Portable Power. “We looked at gasoline and electric alternatives for our air compressors, just as other groups in the company looked at alternatives for their equipment. But in the end, most consumers decided to stay with diesel. “When it comes to choosing between diesel and another alternative fuel source, it comes down to ROI,” he adds, “and consumers found diesel fuel to be the best alternative.”

CLOSE RELATIVES Over the years, gaseous fuels have become more popular for certain applications. Gaseous generators, for example, have found an application in the oil and gas industry, where regulations have encouraged the use of well-head gas to minimize flare-offs. Used to run pump jacks and submersible pumps, the application is especially attractive where there is no available power grid, and it is very cost effective. As well-head gas needs to be cleaned to remove dirt, water and other impurities,

At this remote construction site in Utah, the sun, wind and a battery bank join forces to power security cameras. Image source: Tycon Systems most manufacturers offer an onboard scrubber system. Natural gas and propane have also found applications for standby power in the commercial, industrial and residential marketplace. Doosan, Generac Mobile and Kohler natural gas generators, for example, can operate on propane as well as natural gas. “Kohler launched its gaseous mobile generator line in 2014. These units are typically pulled behind a truck to a specific location where they can run for long hours in prime and standby applications,” says Anne Feudner, product manager, Kohler mobile generators. “They’re ideal for remote construction sites and large-scale special events, and excellent for storm recovery operations — anywhere dependable power is needed.” Unlike diesel, natural gas and propane don’t degrade over time. “Propane is reliable and readily available and is typically the

Like the auto industry, the construction industry has seen opportunity utilizing hybrid technology. “Light towers are a good example where hybrid technology has a place. A generator can charge batteries during the day, which in turn would provide quiet power to light an evening event,” says Goche. “The challenge for the rental store and its customers is balancing the additional initial cost for the battery and engine combination. “LED lights, though, are becoming more popular in light towers. They are dramatically more efficient than metal halide lights, and improving battery life and output will only serve to make hybrid technology more cost effective and viable,” he adds. Goche believes “going green” will be the next opportunity. “In 2013, Generac purchased Italybased Tower Light and has since incorporated its hybrid technology into its green line of light tower products that feature rechargeable batteries using both shore power (plug-in) and the diesel generator/battery technology,” he points out. Indeed, battery technology continues to improve, as evidenced by the evolution and growing popularity of battery-powered hand tools, chain saws and larger equipment like hammers and rammers. Even larger battery-powered equipment has made its way into the European construction market, but it has been slow to catch on in this country. “The European market is more receptive to battery and

POWER S OU RCES

electric power because of tougher emissions standards and higher fuel costs there than in the U.S.,” says Bailey. But as battery life, power output and rechargeability improve, he predicts it will become more attractive on this side of the Atlantic.

HARNESSING SOLAR POWER One of the most reliable sources of renewable energy lies some 90+ million miles from earth. Harnessing this energy is something Tycon Systems has been doing for the last 10 years. The Utah-based manufacturer designs and manufactures turnkey remote power systems such as RemotePro, which utilizes solar and wind, and outdoor uninterruptible backup power systems (UPSPro). These products have a variety of applications. “This industry is constantly changing and improving, and the applications for solar power are nearly endless,” says Seth Allen, Tycon sales and marketing manager. The company specializes in powering low-voltage equipment such as irrigation pumps, security cameras, wireless communication, outdoor lighting, etc., as well as hard to reach areas where being on the grid may be too costly or virtually impossible to accommodate. It also has a mobile trailer wind/solar power system for those needing temporary mobile power. When employed in conjunction with battery backup, the power can be available 24/7. “Typically, we look at the application and the number of hours of peak sunlight available during the day. Then, we determine how much solar and battery backup is needed to supply power for a specific time period, perhaps for a couple of hours or 24/7,” Allen explains. “Powering lights in remote locations such as those common in the oil and mining industries has become a popular application for solar power,” he continues. “Unlike gasoline- or diesel-powered light towers that require routine maintenance and refueling, solar-powered units effortlessly convert the sun’s rays into power. Another advantage is

that the conversion is quiet, making these light towers popular... where noise can be an issue.” For the more traditional uses for light towers, diesel still dominates and likely will do so for a long time, says Doosan’s Bailey. “Again, it comes down to ROI — and using batteries in conjunction with photo cells as an alternative to diesel is not competitive,” he asserts. “Rest assured, though, that all light tower manufacturers either have already or will in the future experiment with the technology. It isn’t there yet, but it will be.” The sun isn’t the only domain for Tycon Systems. It also offers a 400-watt wind turbine for stand-alone power, storing energy in a battery bank or to work in conjunction with solar panels.

but with people like Elon Musk leading the charge, expect solar panels to continue to increase in efficiency.”

MORE CHOICES AHEAD On the portable generator side of its business, Kohler has introduced a tri-fuel generator. “This product allows a user to run certain Kohler portable generators on three different fuels: propane, natural gas and gasoline,” Feudner notes. “To switch between the three fuels, the user simply turns a dial and swaps out the fuel hose. So, users can choose how they want to power their portable generator based on what’s available to them.” Batteries, hybrid technology, propane and natural gas will continue to bite away at

applications. “Batteries make sense in hand tools and smaller equipment when a user can afford to buy a backup battery,” says Bailey. “That approach doesn’t work so well when factoring in the much higher cost for larger batteries in larger equipment.” For example, consider a scenario where a construction deadline has crews working a 14-hour day with electric equipment that only runs eight hours per charge. And it takes the batteries several hours to recharge. “Then there’s the acquisition cost of purchasing the equipment, along with the price per horsepower value,” Bailey continues. “The technology isn’t quite there for electric vehicles, but car buyers will be a good indicator of when it is. “Look for the auto industry to lead the way,” he says. “As electric cars become more affordable, run longer between charges and need less time to recharge, they will become more attractive to consumers and the technology more usable in not only generators and air compressors but in larger off-road equipment, as well.” A similar scenario will likely play out for other fuel sources such as hybrid technologies and fuel cells. Compliance, noise issues and special applications continue to make them an attractive alternative, but until the ROI or price per horsepower value comes down, widespread acceptance in the construction industry remains several years down the road. ET

Batteries, hybrid technology, propane and natural gas will continue to bite away at the diesel pie. Other prospects, including fuel cells, are waiting to get into the game. “Available sunlight and wind can both be unpredictable,” Allen acknowledges. “The sun is constant, but available daylight hours and cloudless skies for peak solar panel efficiency are not, and wind is even more unpredictable. “When used together, though, they provide a more consistent source of power,” he states. “Both technologies look to become even more efficient over time. Solar panels, for example, are currently somewhere between 20% and 25% efficient,

the diesel pie. Other prospects, including fuel cells, are waiting to get into the game. “Doosan has a fuel cell group, but the technology of converting a chemical reaction between hydrogen fuel and oxygen into energy is still not ready for applications in the construction industry,” says Bailey. “Currently, it’s more appropriate for supplying energy to buildings and smaller electrical grids.” Size and cost are the two main stumbling blocks for both hybrid and dedicated battery power

More efficient than metal halide, LED lights will serve to make hybrid technology even more viable. The challenge is the additional cost for the battery and engine combination.

Large gaseous generators provide continuous power in remote well-head locations and standby power in commercial, industrial and residential settings. www.ForConstructionPros.com

or more than a century, in order to determine concrete’s strength, contractors would cast specimens in cylinders and then put them into a machine to crush them to determine the strength of the concrete that was placed. “That technology hasn’t changed for 100 years,” says Greg McKinnon, operations manager for Stoneway Concrete. “It’s not necessarily representative of the strength of the structural element. It only tells you the strength of the concrete in that cylinder.” The temperatures and conditions in which the concrete cylinder and the in-place concrete (structural element) are cured can be different. The specimen is smaller than the structural element, so they cure at different rates. The structural element is generally thicker, as well, so it generates more heat than the concrete cylinder. “Strength is just a function of temperature and time, so the cylinder cannot generate the same heat as the structural element. So, you can’t compare the two from a strength perspective,” says McKinnon. Now, low-cost wireless sensors are replacing this century-old practice. Stoneway Concrete sells Giatec concrete sensors to contractors and uses them on its own projects to gain a more accurate and valuable understanding of concrete performance and to speed up construction processes. Wireless Giatec SmartRock sensors collect data from inside newly placed concrete and transmit it to the cloud so contractors get an objective measure of curing progress.

Wireless Giatec sensors collect data from inside placed concrete and transmit that data to the cloud so contractors can measure performance of the in-place concrete. “Our customers have a need to know how their concrete is performing, especially at early ages of the concrete,” says McKinnon. “For commercial work, where they need to post-tension and they are looking for a specified strength in a short period of time, they are able to monitor it and know the real-time temperature of the in-place concrete.”

mat foundation of 8 to 12 ft. thick. The schedule called for erecting a tower crane on part of that footing in seven days. The sensors indicated that the in-place concrete had made strength in five days, while the concrete in the test cylinders didn’t make strength in nine days. Relying on sensors instead of the traditional testing cylinder method got the crane up five days earlier. Once the tower crane was erected, the first posttension deck was poured. The sensors indicated the deck achieved its strength target in just one day, though the schedule had allowed for three days of curing. The engineer was a little apprehensive but allowed the crew to tension the deck after two days, saving one day for each deck poured.

Relying on sensors instead of the traditional testing cylinder method got the crane up five days earlier. NO MORE HURRY UP AND WAIT When contractors can’t properly determine whether concrete has made strength, they wait longer. This can lead to unnecessary project delays. On one project performed by a Stoneway customer, the Giatec sensors not only accelerated the construction process, but demonstrated the potential for inaccuracies with cylinder specimens in determining strength. The contractor poured a large

Tips to

PRESERVE DEF QUALITY The API provides guidelines for proper purchasing and storage.

D

iesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is made from a mixture of technically pure urea and purified water and must be handled and stored properly to preserve its quality. This is true for drivers filling up on the road and for shops that stock DEF. On the road, one of the main challenges for drivers is knowing the brand of DEF they are being sold, as many fillup locations don’t identify the manufacturer and brand name from bulk dispensers — despite regulations in many states that require this information. Unless it is marked, it is difficult for drivers to confirm they are buying DEF that is licensed by the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Program. Many diesel engine manufacturers recommend that drivers use APIlicensed DEF. Drivers accustomed to purchasing DEF in containers should look at the expiration date on the bottle and be sure to use it before this date as the product has a limited shelf life. If a date is not present, ask for the most recently delivered DEF products. Storage conditions also have an impact on quality. DEF can be expected to have a minimum shelf life of 12 months or even

40  EQUIPM ENT T OD AY | April 2019 ET0419_40_FleetMgt_BC.indd 40

longer in optimum conditions. Check the label for recommended storage temperatures. API recommends that DEF not be stored in the truck for too long after purchase, especially if the storage area in the vehicle is routinely hotter than the recommended storage temperatures displayed on the label. Be sure to look for the API certification mark on the bottle, as well.

PURCHASING DEF FOR SHOP USE API has found that the biggest misconception by fleet managers is the belief that if the urea concentration of the DEF is on spec, then the DEF meets the required quality. While it is absolutely true that the concentration is very important, there are many other important quality characteristics built into the ISO 22241 specification. DEF is composed of 32.5% technically pure urea in pure water. Each of these components is critical to the manufacture of DEF that meets the quality standard. Use of sub-standard urea (such as agricultural-grade urea commonly used as fertilizer) or water derived directly from the public water system without proper treatment can introduce contaminants and metals that are not only detrimental to the life of the selective catalytic

reduction (SCR) system, but can also affect the SCR system’s ability to reduce NOx emissions. Fleet managers responsible for procuring DEF should confirm that their suppliers are providing fluid that meets the ISO quality standard. One way to do this is to ensure that the suppliers are providing a Certificate of Analysis (or Quality) with every shipment that addresses all of the quality characteristics that the specification requires. Fleets and drivers can check to see if the DEF they are buying is licensed through API’s real-time directory of licensees on the API website.

MANAGING DEF IN SHOPS For shops, the handling, storage and dispensing of DEF is very important to ensure that off-spec product doesn’t reach the field. Temperature during transport or at the point of storage can harm the shelf life of DEF in containers. Make sure the stock is rotated to use the oldest product first. Proper storage temperature in a shop is also vital. Storing in temperatures above 86˚ F will limit the shelf life of the DEF over time. Some additional things to consider in storing and handing include: ˜˜ Bulk storage tanks should be dedicated for DEF. Don’t

switch products in the bulk tank without thoroughly rinsing the tank with distilled or de-ionized water or onspec DEF. ˜˜ A closed loop system for transferring DEF from a drum or bulk tank is recommended so contaminants don’t get into it. This is particularly important in a shop or construction site that has dust or dirt in the air. ˜˜ Use dedicated equipment for dispensing DEF. Don’t use funnels, pitchers, hoses, etc. that are used for other fluids when putting DEF in a tank. ˜˜ Anything used for dispensing DEF should be cleaned with distilled or de-ionized water and followed by a DEF rinse. Don’t use tap water for cleaning. For shops, drivers and equipment operators, it’s important to know what you’re putting into the DEF tank. The quality of the DEF going into your vehicle or equipment is as important as the quality of the engine oils or fuels used. Use of API-licensed DEF will ensure that it meets the high standards required by engine and vehicle/equipment manufacturers. ET

Keeping Equipment Under Cover Fabric structures keep equipment out of the elements, reducing wear and tear and the related downtime.

P

rofessionals across many industries, including construction, mining, excavating and more, rely on costly equipment and machinery to complete their work. The condition of the equipment can mean the difference between finishing jobs on time and within budget or experiencing unnecessary delays throughout. Preventive maintenance is often the simplest and most cost-effective option when caring for heavy-duty machinery. One opportunity to keep equipment performing at its best is to take advantage of yearround coverage solutions, which remove vehicles from the harsh impact of the outdoor elements. Storing equipment inside prevents excessive wear and costly repairs, and fabric buildings provide an economical and sustainable option for protecting your equipment investment.

MULTIPURPOSE DESIGN Without proper coverage, it won’t be long before noticeable damage in the form of corrosion, rust, rot and broken parts begin to emerge. Wear is a normal occurrence while equipment is

Wear is a normal occurrence while equipment is in use, but damage to stored machinery is completely preventable with the proper precautions. in use and operating on a regular basis, but damage to stored machinery is completely preventable with the proper precautions. Fewer repairs mean that jobsite efficiency is automatically improved. This also means operators are safer while using the equipment and are less exposed to malfunctions. When businesses opt for a fabric structure, they often see many direct benefits from day one, including a lower price tag than traditional buildings, an abundance of customization options to suit their needs and countless other advantages once the structure is in use. Many structures can be built to nearly any desired size, creating a clear span of storage space. Fabric buildings can be customized to specific sizes, often large enough to cover entire operations and jobsites. The

structures not only fit more equipment than a shed or small building, they can be used in multiple ways at one time. Mike Maedge, Mike A. Maedge Trucking, Inc., realized he needed a storage space to protect the equipment for his excavating and trucking company. He invested in a tension fabric building from ClearSpan Fabric Structures and found the versatility to be the building’s greatest asset. The 65-ft.-wide by 160-ft.long structure proved space enough to fit even more than Maedge originally anticipated. “We are able to store tractors for construction jobs, a fertilizer and rock spreader for road repairs and about 2,000 hay bales, which we sell to individuals as a side business,” he says. “Our building serves so many purposes.”

Fabric buildings provide an economical and sustainable option for protecting equipment. CREATIVE STORAGE Fabric buildings can become a creative storage solution in more ways than one. While the inside provides plenty of room to maneuver and store machinery, the structure’s foundation can offer unexpected storage, as well. Some fabric buildings offer the option to use shipping containers rather than traditional concrete to secure the structure to the ground. A business can park trucks, excavators and other large equipment underneath the building, then store additional supplies inside the shipping containers beneath the fabric cover. Fabric structures are ultimately a more cost-effective alternative to traditional buildings and offer greater storage space, plus help prevent costly equipment repairs. Keeping vehicles and machinery sheltered is a smart choice, and fabric buildings are a sustainable solution to do so. ET

How Military Veterans Can

EASE THE EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN SHORTAGE Build awareness to attract this critical, experienced resource.

C

ompanies that are looking for loyal, disciplined, hardworking individuals need to look no further than the thousands of active-duty military members returning to civilian life every year. Organizations such as MilitaryHire, RecruitMilitary and Hire Heroes USA can help. “Over the last two years, roughly 16,000 veterans have gotten jobs through working with us,” says Christopher Plamp, a retired Air Force colonel and CEO of Hire Heroes USA. “Many went into the construction trade itself. We also put a lot of veterans into installation, maintenance and repair careers — almost 800, in fact. “The interesting thing is that they are not going into installation, maintenance and repair in the construction industry,” he comments. “They are going into industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, utilities and government. Even the retail trade is getting more veterans. That tells me it’s really about awareness.” Plamp offers some advice on how companies can increase awareness and better entice veterans to look at opportunities within the construction industry.

RECRUITING VETERANS Veterans respond favorably to companies that publicly say they want to hire veterans. Certain companies (e.g., Home Depot) and industries (railroad, aviation) have been very good at this. Some construction companies are also doing a great job.

Take Branch Civil, for example, a Roanoke, VA-based part of the Branch Group that provides a range of services including heavy civil construction, designbuild and site development. As of August 2018, Branch Group is a Virginia Values Veterans V3-Certified company. That means the company will be focusing its hiring and retention efforts specifically on military veterans. Plamp cautions that it’s important for construction companies to avoid making help wanted ads appear too restrictive. Asking for a specific type or too much industry experience, for example, could turn a lot of promising candidates away. Asking for “equivalent experience” could help get veterans into the pipeline for consideration.

beyond its equipment technician shortage. There will be some turnover of fleet managers over the next several years as many enter into retirement. Qualified technicians who possess the characteristics of solid managers will be in increasingly high demand. That prospect of upward mobility can be very enticing to a military veteran looking to build a longterm career. “By and large, if a veteran was doing vehicle maintenance while in the military, a vast majority are not looking to do vehicle maintenance outside of the military,” Plamp points out.

RETAINING VETERANS Once a veteran is hired, it’s important for companies to acknowledge their military service in some manner. This helps with retention. Some companies pair new hires with existing employees who are also veterans. This helps with the assimilation process. Some assemble all veterans into groups that meet on a regular basis. “Sometimes it is just company supervisors who simply acknowledge the veterans for the skills they bring to the job,” Plamp says. Career advancement is an important area companies must consider. This is another perfect match for the construction industry, which must think

A job search for “equipment maintenance” at hireheroesusa.org returns thousands of results. Hire Heroes placed roughly 800 military veterans into maintenance and repair jobs over the past two years. www.ForConstructionPros.com

“There is an exception if they see a path toward leadership and management. “Because they were in the military, they’ve acquired a lot of those important soft skills, like leading, training and safety,” he continues. “Because of that background, veterans would like to see some potential for rapid progression.” In addition, military veterans are self-sufficient, comfortable with responsibility and great decision makers. This is why they often make for great entrepreneurs and franchisees. It is also why they could make great fleet managers. ET

bauma Demonstrates

A SMARTER HEAVY EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY D

Several manufacturers will use this year’s largest trade show to demonstrate their capabilities and growing use of digitalization.

uring the bauma Media Dialog earlier this year, journalists and show exhibitors were brought together to discuss products and trends that will be on hand at the huge show, which is held every three years in Munich, Germany. It was clear to see that the continually growing trend of digitalization would be among the highlights of bauma 2019. The show organizers, Messe Munchen, noted that several companies would focus on the topic. “The digitalization of the construction industry is becoming increasingly important. Many construction machines are already equipped with communication interfaces that provide comprehensive data, e.g. on location and [fuel] consumption. This development is also reflected at bauma 2019,” said Mareile Kästner, bauma

project manager, in a press release about the event.

A DIGITAL BAROMETER

The Media Dialog was kicked off by Klaus Dittrich, chairman and CEO of Messe Munchen, discussing a survey conducted by the organization. Between June 13 and August 10, 2018, it surveyed 10,000 industry executives from around the world — all in leading, decision-making positions — to gain a perspective on current trends within the construction industry. This industry barometer found the level of investment in the construction industry is very high across the globe and is expected to continue over the next few years. Forty-four percent of respondents said they are planning to increase investment levels for their company in the future. The survey also found

DIGITALIZATION WAS NOTED AS BOTH A CHALLENGE AND A “MEGATREND” FOR THE INDUSTRY.

that of the challenges facing the industry, the shortage of skilled labor was the biggest, with 58% of respondents indicating as much. Increasing competitive and price pressures, as well as tightening environmental laws and regulations, were also at the top of the list. Digitalization was noted as both a challenge and a “mega-trend” for the industry.

The Projection module used for Hella’s VISIOTECH technology projects an exclamation mark on the ground as an optical warning to prevent those nearby from entering a vehicle’s path. Of those surveyed, 26% said research into the field of digital networking was taking place within their companies. Over half of respondents said they have already digitized parts of their company or have at least started doing so. Twenty-two percent are still waiting and 20% currently see no need for action. “Only 4% believe they are leading the way in terms of digitalization,” said Dittrich. He noted that digitalization plays a role in and out of the production process for no more than 34% of respondents. Only

WHAT’S ONLINE? 14% use cloud- or web-based services, and 26% indicated the topic of digital networking is not on their agenda for the future. While digitalization is an important and growing trend, Dittrich said many companies are struggling with its implementation — as evidenced by the survey results — and that there is clearly some incongruency between the importance of research into and actual development of digital products. Despite the challenges, digitalization is slowly making its way into the industry. At bauma 2019, visitors were expected to see state-of-the-art excavators, cranes and dozers that can be equipped with a broad range of sensors and communication interfaces. “The data that is produced and analyzed makes it possible to check the machinery on job performance, fuel consumption and locations, and to define predictive maintenance to more precisely determine operating costs. Entire fleets can be managed by telematics,” Dittrich noted. “Digitalization also facilitates efforts to automate work processes, an increasingly important factor in light of the shortage of skilled workers faced by the industry.”

…THERE IS CLEARLY SOME INCONGRUENCY BETWEEN THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH INTO AND ACTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL PRODUCTS.

DIGITALIZATION IN ACTION

Today, almost everything from bearings to engines to tires have become smarter and more connected through the use of sensors, CAN communication, telematics and the Internet of Things (IoT). Use of these digital components not only makes products smarter, but also enables efficiency improvements. During bauma, Hydroline planned to exhibit LEO (Lifecycle Efficiency Online), its predictive maintenance technology for hydraulic cylinders (www.oemoffhighway.com/21045492). Designed for both OEM and aftermarket customers, LEO uses a proprietary algorithm to analyze life-cycle data collected directly from the cylinder via built-in sensors. This helps end users to plan potential maintenance, while providing OEMs information on how the cylinders are actually being used to aid them in future designs. The system can monitor one or several cylinders in a piece of heavy machinery. Eaton exhibited several of its “smart” components, such as its CANenabled CMA valve (www.oemoffhighway.com/21021031) designed to provide and maintain precise control for all load conditions. The technology can be paired with other Eaton components to aid aspects such as boom stability. An aspect of the industry’s increasing digitalization is the growing use and improvement of safety systems, including lighting, cameras and proximity detection systems. This trend was also set to be on display. Continental, for instance, introduced the next generation of its ProViu 360 surround view system (www.oemoffhighway.com/21044713), which will now provide images in HD resolution. In addition, it will be capable of fusing together camera images and sensor information to better analyze the area around a vehicle and alert operators to any potential collisions or objects in the way. ITK Engineering was exhibiting for the first time at bauma, where it featured its camera-based 3D terrain mapping application (www.oemoffhighway.com/21045848) designed to provide object detection in areas where visibility is poor. The company says such systems can be composed of, for example, digital stereo camera systems paired with specially developed algorithms to locate objects of any size in the terrain, in 3D and with precision. In addition, it can provide manufacturer-independent solutions. To help increase safety around large equipment, HELLA showed its VISIOTECH projection technology (www.oemoffhighway. com/21046128), of which four models have been released. The LED Projection Module, for instance, projects an exclamation mark on the ground to provide an optical warning to others nearby as a means of preventing them from entering the vehicle’s path. HELLA also planned to exhibit its intelligent battery sensors, which continually measure voltage, current and temperature to keep vehicle owners aware of battery charge levels and any signs of aging. Conventional guardrail systems are constructed on the jobsite out of lumber and are time-consuming to build and erect, require constant maintenance and are commonly discarded as waste at the conclusion of projects. Budgeted costs associated with constructing and maintaining this type of guardrail are significantly underestimated. “Looking close at the costs of using wood guardrails, we realized we were off in how they were budgeted,” says Taylor Gunkel, superintendent and design phase manager, Sports and Entertainment, M.A. Mortenson. “We were approached by an industry peer, Hilmerson Safety, who had been collaborating for several years with other general contractors to develop a lean guardrail system. We decided to partner with them and take a lean approach to deliver a solution that would add, not detract, from the bottom line.” L earn more about this solution at www.ForConstructionPros.com/21060683
