Offset Vibratory Roller Attachment The Offset Vibe Roller Skid Steer Attachment features interchangeable rollers in 2-, 3- and 4-ft. widths. It attaches to any machine via an SAE quick-connector coupling and requires only standard flow hydraulics. The vibratory feature creates optimal compaction for rolling stone, asphalt, RAP and dirt. It produces 500 to 2,500 vpm with an amplitude of .02 in. The unit can roll outside the slope of the shoulder (up to 30° drum pivot) and can be dropped down into trenches with the drum positioned 30 in. below the mounting point. The T-18 handheld controller can be used for driving geopositioning, construction, mapping and vertical construction applications. It has a 3.7-in. sunlight-readable display with a 1GHz processor, 1GB of internal storage, internal GPS and up to 10 hours of battery life. Its 3.5G cellular modem allows users to access the Internet for RTK (real-time kinematic) correction services. The internal GPS option provides a navigational functionality capable of accuracies in the 3m range. With a 72-channel, all-in-view tracking receiver, the unit can be used for navigation or general positioning. Other features include standard Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and an IP65 rating for dust and water protection.

Quick Couplers These quick couplers feature a wedge-locking principal to connect to attachments in two places for optimal locking force. The self-adjusting wedge locks at 1,730 psi and unlocks at 3,455 psi. Separate open and close buttons and an audible alert system notify the operator when the wedge and safety knuckle are open or closed. LED lights and a beeping signal also provide clear indication of whether or not the wedge has successfully captured the rear pin. The couplers come in hydraulic pin-to-pin, mechanical pin-to-pin, Nordic-style S-lock and tilt or tilt rotation versions made of high-alloy steel. Logs Hours of Service Application The Zonar Logs hours of service ELD solution transmits log data to the eRODS system and meets the FMCSA self-certification requirement. Drivers use the Zonar tablet to view available hours, update duty status and electronically certify and submit hours of service (HOS) records. The system automatically tracks drive time, and an alert activates in the cab and within Ground Traffic Control one hour prior to reaching HOS limits. The Roadside View displays driver logs; the back office view and Roadside View both display information uniformly. Driver logs can be viewed by day, week and month, and each driver’s time can be monitored, printed or emailed.

LCV6 and LCV8 Light Towers The LCV6 and LCV8 feature a small body design (82” L x 55” W) and a manually extending, 23-ft. vertical mast with a clamshell-style canopy made of highly durable, lightweight composite material. The transmission includes eight forward gears and four reverse gears, higher overall gear ratio spread, equal ratio steps between gears and optimized gear shifting with partial load shifts. The L260H is a high-production machine that can load a truck with 26 tons in just two passes. It offers larger bucket sizes, 15% greater payload, 10% improved fuel efficiency and 5% more horsepower and torque over previous models. The high-pressure hydraulic system allows for faster cycle times and increased lift force, demonstrated by the lifting arm system, which yields 66,453.5 lbf. of lift capacity. The 34-tonne unit has a 416-hp Volvo D13J Tier 4 Final engine that generates high torque (1,728 ft.-lbs.) at low engine speeds to minimize emissions and fuel consumption. The engine is paired with a fully automatic power shift transmission. OptiShift technology integrates the Reverse By Braking function and lockup torque converter. The Care Cab includes the onboard Volvo Co-Pilot display and optional Load Assist.

THE QUICKATTACHMENT EVOLUTION Demolition attachments are often hydraulically intensive and there is a trend to utilize quick couplers with integrated hydraulic coupling. “When I couple a shear to the machine, there is a special hydraulic manifold and the hydraulics will automatically connect,” says Kurt Moncini, Komatsu America. “You can go back and forth between various hydraulic-powered attachments without spending a couple hours to unhook and re-hook lines.” These hydraulic manifolds save time and keep operators in the cab, away from hazards. Hydraulic quick-attachment manifolds have been used in the European market for some time. “It has started to gain more and more traction in North America in the past few years,” says Rich Elliott, Epiroc.

xcavators paired with demolition attachments are the primary workhorses on modern demolition sites. Maximum efficiency requires selecting the right attachment for the job, properly sizing the excavator for the tool and ensuring the operating flows and pressures are adjusted for optimum performance. Excavators are typically modified to meet specific demolition requirements. “The machine/ tool interface, type of tool and the guarding really require a higher degree of coordination with the customer to meet their requirements,” says Kurt Moncini, senior product manager, Komatsu America. “What you are doing and how fast you have to get it done dictates how much machine modification is required to provide an acceptable solution to the project.” Modifications can be extensive. “Some completely replace the undercarriage with hydraulically expandable tracks,” says Moncini. “This squares up the undercarriage, giving you basically the same capacity over the front as you have over the side.”

There is no single solution; find the tools that work for you. “Two demolition contractors 50 miles apart might approach their jobs completely different because they believe their system works best for the equipment they have,” says Moncini. One attachment that requires special attention is the hydraulic hammer. “Hydraulic hammers
create high vibration impacts that go back into the machine, so normally a smaller hydraulic hammer is paired with machines compared to a demolition tool like a shear or concrete processor,” explains Barnes. “The size of the existing carrier is sometimes the main criteria for hammer selection, narrowing the choices to those that fit your carrier,” says Greg Smith, marketing communications manager, Okada America Inc. “Typically, customer-owned carriers can be equipped with the proper size hammer without any problems. Formulas using the weight of the hammer vs. the carrier’s weight are needed to ensure proper sizing. Fitting existing carriers is a typical request. After all, a hammer may be one of four or five attachments for one carrier. “Hydraulic hammers have evolved with revolutionary seal technology, better steel and closer tolerances,” he continues. “Periodic greasing, monitoring lower bushing wear and tool wear is about all that the hammer requires. A hammer will provide years’ worth of trouble-free service provided it is carefully paired to the appropriate carrier.” This is where many problems develop. “If the carrier’s hydraulic system is not set up properly, excessive heat buildup and vibration can not only damage the hammer but the carrier, as well,” says Smith. “Properly troubleshooting the hydraulic system to ensure proper flows and pressures eliminates these problems.”
MATCH FLOW AND PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS Demolition tools tend to have high hydraulic demands. “Make sure the excavator has enough hydraulic flow and pressure to supply the demolition tool enough oil to operate efficiently,” says Barnes. “Make sure the machine has enough lift capacity to handle the demolition tool at max reach of the excavator, including the additional reach the length of the tool adds. You will also want to ensure that the excavator bucket and stick cylinder have enough power to operate the tool without putting undue stress on the cylinders.” Don’t forget auxiliary
hydraulic demands. “To run most hydraulic-powered demolition attachments, you will need an additional hydraulic circuit,” says Barnes. “You will also need an additional rotational circuit if that tool is capable of turning 360°.” Setting flows and pressures for specific attachments has been greatly simplified with the latest generation of machines. “A lot of the newer excavators have electronic controls that control the hydraulic flow and oil pressure,” says Elliot. “Some are extremely accurate and some are not. But once you have them preset to match each specific attachment, you can program the machine for a particular combi-cutter, hydraulic breaker or crusher and name them.”
equipment will last a long time and you will get better production and reliability out of the unit.” Double check all settings. “Make sure the attachment has priority flow so that if the operator moves another function while operating the attachment, the oil flow going to the attachment is consistent as opposed to dropping off,” Elliott advises. “A common mistake is to choose a tool that consumes more power than the base carrier can provide, or a tool that is bigger than the base carrier can handle,” Moncini comments. “Demolition tool manufacturers usually give you an optimal hydraulic oil flow range that is needed to run their tool, which the excavator will have

Don’t merely rely on what the electronic system is telling you. “If you don’t utilize a hydraulic flow meter to make sure it is within the operating parameters of the attachment, you don’t know if it is correct or not. Electronics are not always 100% when you go to set up the auxiliary circuit,” Elliott points out. “A flow meter is the biggest savior to making sure the

Maximum efficiency requires selecting the right attachment for the job, properly sizing the excavator for the tool and ensuring the operating flows and pressures are adjusted for optimum performance.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING
A HIGH-REACH EXCAVATOR “There are many manufacturers of ultra-high-reach demolition packages and you have to understand the specific package of the machine — the stability requirements, the envelope it works in,” says Kurt Moncini, Komatsu America. “Most of these machines incorporate some type of Load Moment Indicator (LMI) system. The LMI on a demolition machine is designed to make sure the work tool does not get out of an envelope that is going to jeopardize the stability of the machine.” “You want to look at the working range of the high-reach attachment,” says Marcus Barnes, Liebherr USA. “Can the high-reach attachment work from the ground level up or is it limited in a certain range? A Liebherr high reach can work from the ground level up and eliminate the need of having another piece of equipment on site to take down the structure once it gets 15 ft. and below. You may also want to check and see if the machine is capable of working 360° or if the machine is capable of working only in front of its track and not along the side. A machine that can work 360° can be useful on tight jobsites where you may not be able to adjust the undercarriage to get the attachment in front of the machine.” To maximize utilization, make sure the machine you purchase is capable of being more than just a high-reach excavator. Liebherr high-reach models have a plug-in boom section where the high-reach attachment is mounted. “Along with a high-reach attachment, Liebherr offers a backhoe attachment that can be used as a standard earthmoving boom or straight boom for more reach,” says Barnes. The company also offers a material-handling plug-in boom. “The difference between a material-handling and a backhoe plug-in boom is that the material-handling boom has two stick cylinders so it’s capable of handling a heavier tool,” Barnes explains. “There are also boom extensions for the attachments if you are needing a little more reach.” “It is common to find a reconfigurable two-piece main boom on an ultra-high-reach machine,” says Moncini. “You can unpin the front top half of the main boom and replace it with an excavator attachment.” This more conventional excavator front will allow you to do secondary loading, sorting, nibbling and crushing. “Some people will use a Swiss Army knife approach. Others will dedicate an ultra-high-reach machine and have secondary equipment whose only job is to secondary process, load out and assist in final site prep at the end of the job.”
two moving cylinders,” says Elliott. “If you were using our combi-cutter to crush a piece of concrete, if one jaw has made contact with the structure and the other has not, the one jaw that has made the contact will stop moving. The other jaw will catch up, and then once it builds pressure against the piece of material, both jaws will move
and crush that piece of material or cut it. Therefore, you are not jerking the carrier around. “If you have one cylinder and one moving jaw, when the moving jaw is in contact with the material, you still have to take that jaw and push it up to the non-moving jaw,” he continues. “Then you start twisting and jerking the carrier around.” You also need to understand weight restrictions. People often just looking at the machine weight when picking demolition attachments and don’t look at boom and stick length. “Demolition tools add additional reach to a machine,” says Barnes, “and that paired with an excavator that has a long boom and stick can make a machine tippy if you put too heavy a tool on the machine.”
HIGH REACH REQUIRES MORE ATTENTION In high-reach applications, the weight of the attachment is critical. “If the tool is too heavy, you will be able to lift the highreach attachment off the ground, but once you try to stick out with the tool, you may start noticing the machine is unstable while operating,” says Barnes. “Also, too heavy of a tool can lead to overloading the bucket and stick cylinders, which could lead to premature failing.” “Typically [with highreach excavators], the tools are downsized to match the lifting capacity when the boom and stick(s) are fully extended,” says Elliott. Always reference the specifications of the high-reach equipment to ensure that the tool is appropriate with the specific high-reach configuration. High-reach machines have unique design and operating requirements. “They are usually three-section fronts,” says Moncini. “You need a pretty skilled operator to work a

It is common to find excavators with buckets replaced by water cannons to wet the working area down for dust control. Other times, you may find machines modified with water lines that extend to the top of these high-reach machines.” “Because of the extraordinary high reach these machines have and risk of tipping over, highreach excavators are equipped with safety systems that monitor the high-reach attachments to make sure the excavator is not in danger of tipping,” says Barnes. “We call our system Liebherr Demolition Control (LDC).” The LDC system uses a separate touchscreen similar to that used in Liebherr cranes. It continuously monitors the high-reach attachment using different sensors located on the attachment. “If the operator gets into an uncompromising position, the LDC system will not let the operator make any further movements until the machine is back into a safe working position,” says Barnes.

You need someone with great hand/eye coordination and depth perception because they may have that tool 80 ft. up in the air, trying to grab a beam or a piece of concrete structure with the tool correctly aligned,” says Moncini. “You need [an operator] with good situational awareness.” The goal is to work up high with the machine positioned just far enough back for safe operation. “You get into some really unique modifications — cabs
The LDC system offers two modes of operation. “One mode is a restricted mode where an operator will not be able to put the machine into an uncompromising position,” Barnes explains. “If the operator reaches the high-reach limitation, he will not be able to go any further until the machine is put back into a safe position. Then there is a mode where a more experienced high-reach operator will be able to run the machine without restrictions. This mode is called Supervisor Mode. In my experience, most operators run the machine in a restricted mode until they learn the limits of the machine.” ET

SUSTAINABILITY KEY IN ARCHIVES BUILDING DEMOLITION In 1998, engineers discovered the Georgia Archives Building was sinking due to groundwater and nearby interstate construction, plus it was in need of costly HVAC system repairs. It was ultimately determined that new construction was the most viable option. The building was closed permanently in 2012 and earmarked for demolition and implosion. SSD Demolition and Environmental (SSD) was chosen to perform the asbestos abatement and demolition of four stories underground and 14 stories above ground totaling approximately 650,000 sq. ft., as well as the implosion, which occurred on March 5, 2017. Over the course of the project, the company removed asbestos-containing material from approximately 250,000 sq. ft. of the building. It also recycled 8,800 tons of various metals, 59,650 tons of concrete and 4,600 sq. ft. of marble. All of the above volumes represent tonnage diverted from landfill disposal. In total, 98.7% of all debris generated by the demolition was recycled.

We can ship them out or they can pick them up. “We can normally deliver a part within a couple hours and get it to their door,” says Halverson. “There are times when we will send an inside parts person out to make a rush delivery. We have even brought parts right to the jobsite where the customer is working on the truck.” Making sure the customer gets the right part is a priority. “The trucks change so much by serial number that we can’t just have them call up and give us a part number,” explains Halverson. “We look up the part number ourselves and make sure we get the right part number in a timely manner so we don’t have to go back out and they don’t have to wait for us to return with the correct part. “Some of my guys have been in this business

over 25 years and they know what the customer wants,” he continues. “They will ask questions to make sure they click something that he may not remember that he is going to need, just to keep him happy and get everything going as fast as we can.” One of Badger Truck Center’s customers is the largest utility in the state of Wisconsin. “We have approximately 2,500 pieces of equipment,” says Stan Bartol, fleet technician. Maintenance of this fleet is handled in-house at 22 service centers. “There are two guys like me at each one who maintain the equipment. I do all of the pats ordering, repair and maintenance.” For this customer, getting parts in a timely manner ranks among the most critical concerns. “That is difficult in some places, and with Badger Truck Center I never have an issue,” says Bartol. “My relationship is good enough that I can literally text them and tell them what I need. We don’t even need to have a conversation. That helps me a lot because it helps me get a lot more things done during the day. Typically, I expect parts within a day, normally sooner. It makes my job easier. They have everything I need and I couldn’t be happier.” It all boils down to time management. “Business people have very little time nowadays to mess around,” says Baker. “They just want you to take care of their needs and take care of them properly. Anything we can do to lessen the stress on the customer in this process is very much appreciated with them being so busy in their business. It lessens their time and investment, keeping their trucks on the road.” ET

Virtual reality promises to take aerial equipment training to a higher level of safety and efficacy.
E
veryone’s heard the term virtual reality (VR), but despite the relatively relatable state of the art, for many it still conjures up images of science fiction. In “reality,” the technology is becoming increasingly prevalent in our day-to-day lives. One area where this is particularly true is in equipment training. The nature of aerial equipment has traditionally presented unique challenges to safe and effective training. VR promises to play a prominent role in the movement toward getting users appropriate training, thanks in large part to the introduction of the MEWP Virtual Reality Training Simulator by

GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT TRAINING “Traditional, conventional training is somewhat flawed — and can be really boring,” says Jim Colvin, CEO of Serious Labs, which officially introduced its new simulator at the IPAF Summit in Miami, FL, in March. “Quite frankly, one reason people come into our industry is because they don’t like sitting in classrooms. They want to be physically engaged. “The workforce is changing,” he continues. “There’s such a lack of skilled training in the world right now.
How are we going to get through to young people about the workplace of the future unless we train them in the way they want to be trained? People learn by doing. It’s the best way to teach.” Simulators aren’t new; they have been used in the military and aerospace for decades, Colvin points out. But old school simulators weren’t very engaging or experiential, plus they were very expensive and not portable. This began to change about five years ago, when Palmer Luckey, a college student from Long Beach, CA, developed the Oculus Rift, a VR headmounted display that made the technology more accessible and easier to use. He ultimately sold his creation to Facebook for $3 billion. “They saw a massive revolution coming,” says Colvin. “And we’re just leveraging that. “We’re coming to a time where practical evaluation and assessment should move into
virtual reality. An airplane pilot would never be able to get into a jet unless he had extensive hours of experience,” Colvin states. “We believe the same thing is true for heavy equipment. Everybody has the right to come home the way they left. Everybody’s family relies on them. Our mission is to create a better world with 21st century technology.”
NOT REALITY BUT CLOSE A VR simulator is a completely immersive experience. “You feel like you’re on an actual work site; you can feel a visceral effect,” Colvin asserts. A simulator also lets you track what the operator is doing. “If you’re assessing someone from the ground and he’s up in a 150ft. lift, you don’t know where he’s looking. And how you judge compared to another instructor is not objective,” says Colvin. “A simulator is completely objective, however. It measures every way

3D System Increases Excavator Efficiency Trimble Earthworks allows Landmark Construction’s excavators to semiautonomously reach grade quickly and accurately.
C
harleston, SC-based Landmark Construction is one of the leading contractors in the Southeast U.S., with an emphasis on industrial, concrete, site work and utility contracting. It ranks in ENR’s top 10 for the region, and employs approximately 400. “We were at 45 people eight years ago,” recalls Mike Marshall, survey superintendent. “A lot of [the growth] has to do with technology.” The success of this family-owned business, started in 1965 by Fredrick Mixson and his wife Ann, is partially due to its willingness to embrace the state of the art. Landmark Construction uses GPS and 3D modeling technology during each project; its project superintendents and foremen are experienced in their use and implementation. As a result, the company cuts costs, accelerates project schedules, improves accuracy and delivers a higher quality project for its clients. The company has over a decade of experience with 3D modeling and GPS grade control, with all modeling done in house. “We typically run Trimble products,” says Marshall. This includes machine control systems on dozers, excavators and motor graders, as well as rovers used by field engineers, foremen and supervisors. The investment provides measurable ROI. “Anything in the world of 3D technology pays for itself pretty fast on all of the machines,” says Marshall. “Those systems pay for themselves in the first two years. The technology is good for six to eight years before it renders itself obsolete in need of an upgrade. So, you pay for it for the first couple years, but then you get the benefit of it for the next six.”
MAXIMIZE EARTHMOVING EFFICIENCY Earthmoving efficiency is critical to the success of Landmark Construction. “Nearly half our company is involved in earthmoving operations,” says Marshall. Currently, every dozer in its almost 30-unit fleet is equipped with 3D grade control. “The worst scenario we can get into as a company is when we are moving material from our excavation to fill and we don’t have a good grade control system in that fill,” says Marshall. “So, we always have a dozer running there with 3D.” Equipping more machines with grade control is changing
the way projects are set up. “A typical excavator operation is paired with a bulldozer with 3D on it that is keeping the grade,” Marshall notes. When he was hired eight years ago, one of his assigned tasks was to equip a couple of the fleet’s excavators with 3D grade control. “This allowed the excavator operator to pretty much dig to grade without the constant assistance of a 3D-equipped dozer and operator.” The increased independence has earned favorable acceptance. “The operators in an excavator love it because they don’t have that extra bulldozer there keeping grade for them,” says Marshall. “The key here is eliminating the extra cost of operation with the dozer/ operator.”
EARTHWORKS AUTOMATES PROCESS Last year, Landmark Construction purchased a Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform for Excavators system that allows the excavator to reach grade semi-automatically. When in automatic mode, the user controls the stick and Trimble Earthworks controls the boom and bucket to stay on grade. “We have one Trimble Earthworks excavator at the moment,” says Marshall. “We’ve had it close to a year. It is a very new technology compared to the other systems that we have been running.” The biggest advantage to the system has been how user friendly it is for the operators since it draws on tablet technology. “Our company typically has iPads and some Android devices, so employees are familiar with that operating system,” says Marshall. “When they get in [the cab], it is pretty easy for them to log on and pretty much go straight to work. “We have four operators run it. All four of them had about 30 minutes of training overview,” he comments. “The automatic part is so intuitive.” A major advantage of the Trimble Earthworks with automatics is how it prevents operators from over-digging. “You cannot actually go below grade, which is really significant when it comes to dressing up the slopes,” Marshall points out.

With the previous generation 3D systems being used in its operations, the operator has to look at the grade control screen and coordinate the bucket in the proper position to achieve grade. “The operator still has to put a lot of mental thought into where the bucket is, even though the machine has guidance on it,” Marshall explains. “In the automatic mode, he does not have to put that thought in there as deeply. He is able to move a lot faster.” Take earthworks on a pond, for example. “When you are digging a pond, you dig from the slopes to the middle and you create this bench that your machine sits on,” Marshall describes. “When you are loading that bucket, 50% of the time the bucket is underneath the tracks. Even if you have 3D with the screen, you still have to focus on the screen and leave extra material. And you have to work your bench quite a bit farther back so you can see what you are doing.” The semi-automatic feature no longer requires the operator to focus as much attention to the screen. “With the automatics, you can carry the grade 100% of the time underneath the machine where the operator cannot see,” says Marshall. “Now when he is pulling the bucket to him, he can see where it is being loaded and when he picks it up, he knows he is on grade that entire load because he is in automatic. “That almost doubles his production,” he states. “That caused us to have to add trucks on the haul. The operator normally had to have two or three trucks; we had to have four because he is moving that much faster.” That was with a 4-yd. bucket on a Volvo 360. “Now the operators want a 5- or a 6-yd. bucket.” INCREASE UTILITY PRODUCTION Earthmoving is not the only application that has benefited from an investment in 3D excavator technology. “We have been very successful on some deep sewer work where we use 3D,” says Marshall. “The trick to deep sewer is when you pull the trench box. It is big and a lot of times it is double stacked. If that trench is not perfect, you cannot pull it. The operator tells me when he is digging with that 3D system, it is very easy for him to dig a very straight trench so he can pull that box in one shot. That is the time saver in sewer with 3D — moving that box.” The result is increased productivity. “We were getting an extra two to three joints a day, which added up to a significant amount of money,” Marshall recalls. “It is not so much digging to grade at the bottom as it is moving that trench box one time straight. It also helps with getting to grade because we don’t have to put people in the trench. “The safety factor is very big in utility work,” he continues. “You don’t have someone down in that hole verifying the elevation until you have completed the dig and the trench box is actually moved. Everything all happens in one big step. You basically backfill where you are at, dig and then pull that trench box and finish digging to grade before you ever put a man down there.”
FLEXIBILITY IS A KEY REQUIREMENT Landmark Construction is involved in many construction disciplines and often moves technology and machines around to best suit the jobsite demands. “We do a lot of things with excavators,” says Marshall. “We just finished doing three miles of electrical conduit last month on a
project and we rented a small excavator because most of our fleet is very big. We rented a 200 Series zero tailswing machine and basically installed 3D on it temporarily. We did what we call a soft install.” The results on the project dramatically outpaced expectations. “The owners on that project couldn’t believe what we were doing,” says Marshall. “We were doing 600 to 800 ft. a day and the most they had ever seen was 300 to 400 ft. a day. They thought we were going to be there for six months and we were there for two and a half.” To accomplish this type of success, equipment must be adaptable. “I tend to move things around a lot,” says Marshall. As newer technology is introduced, the existing GPS technology can be shifted to where it can best be utilized. “Everything is interchangeable in this world. So, if I want... I can take it out of the excavator and put it over to a motor grader; maybe it requires a couple of different sensors. My No. 1 goal is to get 100% utilization on every component.” The technology needs to be mobile since the machines in the fleet are also turned on a regular basis. “Most of the dozers that we have been getting lately are integrated machines right at the factory, so that works out pretty good,” says Marshall. “Typically, we will do a two-year lease on a machine, sometimes four. There is nothing in our track fleet that is over four years old.” Even though Landmark Construction tries to use the most up-to-date technology available, it also carefully tracks macro trends. One of these is the pending availability of more satellites with the European Union’s Galileo system coming online. This has caused a brief halt in the acquisition of newer grade control products. “Most of the receivers that we have right now are not capable of picking up those satellites,” says Marshall. “Anything we purchase moving forward, we are going to want to make sure it has that capability. Every technology evolves probably in the eight- to 10-year range. I feel we are in that cycle. Moving forward, everything that we purchase will be Trimble Earthworks.”
MAINTENANCE CONSIDERATIONS Simple maintenance that can be performed in house can be a true time saver. “The Trimble Earthworks system has really simplified the cables to the sensors,” says Marshall. “The typical excavator system has kits that are pre-wired and you run those wires up through the boom, stick and bucket, around the cab and so on. Those are generically put together to handle various sizes of machines. So you end up with long coils of cables that all have different connectors. It is a lot of cabling to figure out.” Trimble Earthworks for excavators uses Deutsche connectors throughout the wiring harness, which greatly simplifies maintenance. “You just buy a roll of cable and cut to fit. Model-based Estimates HALVE CONTRACTOR’S COSTS Estimating software integrated with BIM slashes take-off time, re-estimates after design revisions and allows easy estimate reformatting.

the Revit model via Vico so the respective increase or decrease in quantity is automatically updated. “Since most of the quantity revisions are automatic, this has drastically sped up our ability to make changes. This is what makes Vico a very powerful communication tool.” With these tools, Pepper Construction can design takeoffs and estimates that are more accurate and transparent to owners and design partners. “Our clients see every component of our work, which means that the building owner can have a strong assurance that projects can be completed on time and on budget,” says Dougherty. And with the Trimble Office Suite, Pepper can format an estimate that details whatever information an owner requests.
MORE FLEXIBILITY AND FASTER PROCESSES
Pepper Construction management uses Trimble modeling software in the early stages of a construction project, easily recalculating estimates to give owners cost context for design changes.
For its digital takeoff and estimation, the company relies on Trimble GC Estimator Suite, which includes Trimble’s WinEst and Vico Office programs. “WinEst is a powerful and flexible spreadsheet program that generates estimates. Vico Office is a communication tool that links the WinEst database to the Revit models,” says Keith Dougherty, vice president of preconstruction, Pepper Construction. “With Revit, we create a 3D model of the project and it provides the majority of our project quantities. “Vico Office also helps us track when a design revision is made,” he continues. For example, if a change is made in which carpet is replaced by tile, WinEst estimate communicates with

Model-based takeoffs and estimation have cut the time to create takeoffs nearly in half. “On a $20 million project, we used to spend 80 to 100 hours doing manual quantification, either via an electronic takeoff program or even just hand takeoff. Whereas, with Trimble, we can accomplish the same work in 40 to 60 hours and get information that is a lot more accurate,” says Dougherty. Usability features offer flexibility and help speed up the process. The GC Estimator Suite automatically cross-formats between old CSI, new CSI and Uniformat construction coding, eliminating human error. “The software also has the flexibility to add as many codes as we need,” says Dougherty. “No other program has that flexibility.” Custom codes allow field operations to charge the slab and grade work to a very specific code, allowing the company to
check labor productivity, for example, for specific functions against the estimate. “We had some preestablished codes that go back 25 years, and they don’t always match the new CSI format,” says Dougherty. “So we had to take the database as we built it and, from Trimble, take the typical concrete line items then assign all these other codes that support our job cost system so the custom cost codes match our legacy codes. “We can now break projects down into whatever component the owner asks for,” he continues. “Gone are the days of a $20 million project turning into one $20 million number. It’s not uncommon now for that to be broken down into five to eight components — such as site work, the enclosure, the finishes, etc. — so the owners can really see where their dollars are being spent and where the big impacts are on the project.”
MODEL-BASED ESTIMATING By linking WinEst with Vico Office, the team can calculate 4D and 5D quantities and bring those directly into the scheduling component of the preconstruction process very early. “We use model-based estimating all the way through the construction process, so we want to get out of the manual shop drawing process; we want it all to be electronic; and we want everything to live in the model,” says Dougherty. “Everything is

It plans to start using 5D BIM in the near future. “A 5D BIM injects cost into it,” explains Dougherty. “We have a video program that connects all of them together. The video shows the building actually getting built — the foundations going in, the structure going up and the cladding going on. Across the top of this video is the project schedule so you can jump to any date of the schedule as planned and it will show you in the model how far along the building is built. Then, if we have the cost element built in, we could pick a date using this program and see that the building is 67% complete, for example, and see that 67% of the cost has been expended. “By using 5D, we can prove to the building owner that not only do we have the right estimate for the project, but we have the right schedule,” he adds. “We can give them assurance that we have everything covered and that their costs are not going to escalate at a later date.” ET

Time to Invest, Time to Manage or Both? Position yourself to take advantage of the construction boom without placing your business at risk of going bust.
I
like to read to stay current on what is happening in the construction industry, which could turn into a full-time job if I let it. So, I select publications that cut to the chase while providing the knowledge I seek, believing what they are telling me makes sense. Right now, we have a lot of moving parts in the industry. What you do and where you do it can be a major factor in how well you perform compared to similar contractors in different regions. To help put things into perspective, I listened to commentary by Steven Moore, a renowned economist heard on many TV and radio venues, who happens to be highly ranked in the Trump camp and who may soon become his chief economist. Moore stated that we are currently in the biggest construction boom this country has even seen, which will carry on for years to come. This is not hard to believe in many parts of the country, and for the sake of argument, let’s say that this statement is 90% correct. If even remotely true, the “great construction boom” can be both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on where your company is in the normal life cycle of a contracting operation. If you are a well-managed company with a strong balance that is able to manage a job properly and produce an industry standard gross profit, I would say a robust market is a good thing. But if your company is in the early stages of development, this robust market could lead you down a harmful path where you overextend yourself to the point where you run out of cash at the first sign of a reduction in business activity.

people. ˜˜ Aggressive pricing will be the norm because of the normal and “new” competitors in my market. And what do you think I would say about that? The answer is: ˜˜ I agree the work is out there. ˜˜ Don’t get too crazy and load up on fixed debt or lease payments. ˜˜ Spend your money on good estimators and project managers who can bring the job in on budget. ˜˜ Before running out to take advantage of the new tax benefits related to new and used equipment purchases, rent most of what you need to get a feel for the market before making significant investments. Let’s face it folks — if you load up on 60- to 72-month note obligations to obtain equipment, it better be able to generate 60 to 72 months of work. If you think about it, you may be kidding yourself. Hopefully, you don’t push the risk envelope to the point of no return and then have to return all your hard-earned equity to the bank.
DON’T BUY BASED ON TAX BENEFITS The last article I picked up this week analyzed the new and used equipment markets, spelling out the virtues of the tax breaks available from Section 179 and Bonus Depreciation. The article spelled out how the tax benefits lower your purchase price of the equipment — which only works out if you get to keep the equipment and sell it for a reasonable residual value six to seven years down the road. I’m not saying you shouldn’t take advantage of the tax breaks. But they are much more complicated than you think and deserve some time spent with a tax person who knows the game. I actually wouldn’t make a purchase decision based on taxes, because it only works if you are making a ton of taxable profit in the year of the purchase, and are assured to do the same in the following three to four years so you can use up the tax benefits at a meaningful tax rate. In summary, I say: ˜˜ Take advantage of your market. ˜˜ Do not overextend yourself. ˜˜ Rent what you need. Only consider buying if you can’t rent it. ˜˜ Do what you do best. ˜˜ Stay on top of your work in process. ˜˜ Make a buck that puts you in the top tax bracket. To wrap up and keep things in perspective, what comes after the “biggest construction boom” ever? If you’ve been paying attention, you should know the answer. ET
Next, I picked up John Mauldin’s Thoughts From the Frontline weekly economic newsletter. It is an informative publication expressed in a manner that we can all understand and be able to make use of the data. If you don’t currently read John’s publication, you should sign up for it. The price is right — no charge. The title of the August 18 issue was “The Good News Economy”, where Mauldin summarized all the good things happening in the economy that have led to the “biggest construction boom” noted above. In short, when the small- and mid-sized companies believe that business expansion is in the making, they have to plan to expand their business to take advantage of the situation by investing in new plants, equipment and people. I think it is fair to say that Mauldin reinforces Moore’s statement about the construction boom. But even though I agree with them, I must refer you to the caveat above about being prepared and able to expand the business while avoiding catastrophic outcomes. I realize there is risk in all we do, but risk must be managed and kept at a manageable level, especially when planning out business expansion. How does this impact your business?
