The 30SG’s 1,670 lb. frame keeps the unit stable and in proper contact with the stump, and the low center of gravity helps stabilize the unit on uneven terrain. The track system features a true skid-steer type drive that provides excellent maneuverability, allowing the operator to easily transport the unit to and from the work site. The hydraulic direct drive eliminates the need for expensive drive belts, and the open and accessible body style allows for easy service and maintenance.

MARKET WATCH

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY STILL HEALTHY HEADING INTO 2020 The Marcum Commercial Construction Index for the third quarter of 2019 finds the industry in overall good health as 2020 approaches, despite some causes for concern. Entitled “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”, the report is produced by Marcum LLP’s Construction Services Group. Marcum’s third quarter index points to increased public construction spending, growing backlogs, falling input prices, the ongoing U.S. economic expansion, a strong construction labor market and interest rate cuts as key factors sustaining the construction industry’s momentum. Highlights noted include a: • 1.5% increase in public construction spending in September and a 6.6% increase year-over-year • Average backlog of 10.4 months in the infrastructure category, outpacing the commercial and heavy industrial categories • 0.6% decline in construction input prices in September and a 1.7% year-over-year decline • New jobs rate in 17 of the 20 largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas matching or exceeding the new jobs rate nationally • Third cut in interest rates by the Federal Reserve, sparking residential construction and fueling consumer spending “Despite the lack of a coherent federal infrastructure strategy and the looming insolvency of the Highway Trust Fund, there is no recession in infrastructure spending in America,” wrote Anirban Basu, Marcum’s chief construction economist and author of the report. “The five fastest expanding segments are all primarily publicly financed, while 10 of the 11 slowest growing segments are primarily privately funded, including the commercial segment, which encompasses retail space.” The five fastest growing construction segments in the thirdquarter included: Water Supply (+20.2%), Sewage and Waste Disposal (+18.0%), Public Safety (+8.5%), Highway & Street (6.4%), and Transportation (+5%).

GLOBAL CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT RENTAL TO REACH $121.6 BILLION BY 2024 The global construction equipment rental market was estimated to be $98.6 billion USD in 2019 and is projected to reach $121.6 billion USD by 2024, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3%. This projection is based on ResearchAndMarkets.com’s “Construction Equipment Rental Market by Equipment (Earthmoving, Material Handling, Road Building & Concrete), Product (Backhoes, Excavators, Loaders, Crawler Dozers, Cranes, Compactors, Concrete Pumps), Region - Global Forecast to 2024”. North America is projected to be the largest construction equipment rental market during the forecast period, with the Asia Pacific region expected to outrank Europe to become the second-largest market by 2024. The construction equipment rental market is categorized into earthmoving, material handling, and road building & concrete. Among these, the earthmoving segment is projected to lead the market during the forecast period. By product, the excavator segment is projected to lead the market due to an increase in infrastructure construction activities, along with refurbishment and redevelopment activities associated with residential construction.

MARKET WATCH

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT AUCTION VALUES SAW DOWNWARD TREND IN 2019

→

In its November report, Rouse indicated that values of general construction and heavy earthmoving equipment through late 2019 continued their softening trend in the auction channel.

The trend first surfaced in February’s major auction events, the report indicates. Heavy earthmoving products were the first to be impacted, with notable downward pressure on excavator values and, to a lesser extent, dozers and wheel loaders. As the year progressed, similar patterns appeared across general construction products, including aerial equipment, telehandlers and light and medium earthmoving equipment. Conversely, there have been some bright signs in the retail channel, where values have been generally flat.

T.

Rouse has also observed a notable spike in volumes (units) of equipment that have been coming for sale into the auction channel. Learn more at www.ForConstructionPros. com/21104699.

Portable Generator Market to Increase Through 2024 A report by Research and Markets indicates that the global portable generator market size is estimated to be US$2.0 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach US$2.5 billion by 2024, at a CAGR of 4.1% from 2019 to 2024. Developing nations are increasing the investments for infrastructure developments for an economic boost. The industrial and manufacturing sectors require a continuous and reliable power supply, and the growth of these sectors is expected to shape the future dynamics. Thus, the growing need for an uninterrupted

t

power supply is expected to drive the portable generator market during the forecast

period. The increasing adoption of energy storage technologies and the rising demand for fuel cell generators can act as restraints for the market development. North America dominated the portable generator market in 2018 owing to the rising concerns over power stability for uninterrupted business operations during natural calamities. Markets in the US and Mexico are expected to grow at a fast pace during the forecast period.

ABC 2020 FORECASTS CONSTRUCTION MOMENTUM WILL PERSIST

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Chief Economist Anirban Basu forecasts continued momentum for the construction sector next year but advised an overall “wait-and-see” approach based on leading and lagging indicators and economic uncertainties.

Although ABC’s Construction Backlog Indicator (CBI) — a leading indicator that reflects projects under contract yet to be executed — remained at nine months in October 2019 (www.ForConstructionPros.com/21106676), construction spending and employment (lagging indicators) started to soften. Yet, while spending in private nonresidential categories has decreased, public spending categories remain a bright spot. “Indeed, one of the sources of strength for the U.S. economy over the last year has been a pickup in infrastructure spending,” said Basu. “While the federal government has yet to fashion a full-fledged infrastructure plan for the nation and the Highway Trust Fund is set for insolvency by 2021 absent congressional action, infrastructure-related outlays remain a good news story. So far, state and local governments have come to the rescue, supported by rising collections of income, sales and property taxes. Several key construction segments have benefited as a result, including water/sewer, transportation and highway/street.”

Source: istock/Getty images

These outlays kept the infrastructure segment of the CBI at 9.6 months of backlog as of October 2019, higher than the commercial and institutional and heavy industrial segments. Learn more at www.ForConstructionPros.com/21104472.

2020 OUTLOOK FORECASTS 1.1% EXPANSION IN EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE INVESTMENT Investment in equipment and software is projected to expand 1.1% in 2020 while U.S. economic growth slows to 1.7%, according to the 2020 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. After decelerating over the course of 2019, the U.S. economy is poised to soften further in 2020. Equipment and software investment is likely to post its weakest year of growth since 2016, weighed down by the first annualized contraction in over three years in Q3. “After robust growth in 2018, equipment and software investment slowed markedly throughout 2019 and contracted in the third-quarter as the effects of unresolved trade tensions and a slowing global economy took hold,” said Scott Thacker, Foundation chair, and chief executive officer of Ivory Consulting Corporation. “However, a strong labor market and still-confident U.S. consumer base should keep the broader economy above water, even as investment in several key equipment verticals slows or remains weak.” Several equipment verticals should expect the growth outlook to remain steady or grow moderately in the first half of 2020. These include investments in construction machinery, materials-handling equipment and other industrial equipment. Learn more at www.ForConstructionPros.com/21105732.

Real Growth Ahead for 2020 Transportation Construction Market The U.S. transportation infrastructure market is expected to grow at least 5% next year, according to the annual economic forecast released by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). “The real market growth for 2020 is being fueled by increased transportation investments from federal, state and local governments,” said Dr. Alison Premo Black, ARTBA chief economist, who conducted the analysis. Total domestic transportation construction and related market activity in 2020 should reach $300.4 billion, up from 2019’s $286.5 billion, after adjusting for project costs and inflation. One variable, Black said, is the outlook for the reauthoriza-

tion of the FAST Act transportation law, due in 2020, and the ability of Congress to find additional revenues to support the Highway Trust Fund (HTF). Any project delays because states are concerned about whether the next federal surface transportation bill is completed in a timely matter could temper 2020 market growth, she added. Overall, transportation construction market activity is expected to increase or be steady in about half of the states, the ARTBA analysis shows. Some of the largest markets expected to remain stable or grow include Texas, California, Illinois, New York, Florida, North Carolina, Washington, Minnesota, Michigan, Arizona and Wisconsin. How to repair a broken drain cleaning cable Q. My rental customers keep breaking drain cleaning cables and I don’t know why, nor do I have the welding equipment or the expertise to repair them. What can I do? A. First, make sure your rental customers are using your drain cleaning machines in the right size lines. Nothing will wear out a cable faster than trying to use it in the wrong size pipe.

If your cable breaks, you can repair it quickly with General’s Quick-Fix™. It lets you quickly repair broken drain cleaning cables on the spot and gets your snakes back into your rental fleet quickly.

Cable Application Chart

The specially designed spring with prewelded female connector easily threads over the end of the broken snake. No welding required – just vice-grips or pliers. It’s available in 1/2", 9/16", 5/8" and 3/4" sizes.

The next most common cause of premature cable failure is acid. It’s likely that your renters have tried a chemical drain cleaner first before coming to you to rent a machine. Be sure to clean and lubricate the cable after each rental. General makes Snake-Oil Plus™ that contains a lubricant, rust inhibitor and deodorizer to protect your cables, but light grade motor oil will do. Pour a little oil onto the cable and spin the cage. The oil will be absorbed between the coils to help prevent acid damage.

REPORT By Michelle Kopier & Becky Schultz

How Close Is Electrified Equipment to Your Operation? Compact excavators are showing the most growth for leveraging electric or battery power.

E

lectric machines may still seem like a distant prospect, but more and more OEMs are bringing electrified equipment into their portfolio as the trend gains steam. According to Bart DeHaven, national sales rep for Kato, a number of factors are contributing to the growing interest in battery-powered machinery. “Between tightening emissions standards and electric [and/or] battery machines that are becoming more economical, the bottom-line value to a contractor continues to improve,” he states. “As that value proposition grows, we’re seeing a greater number of contractors demanding electric and battery options.” In line with emissions reduction benefits, as areas become more populated and noise restrictions are more commonplace, electric machines will continue to grow as a market segment solution, says Lee Padgett, product manager, Takeuchi-US. The most prominent subset of

26

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

RPN0120_26-33_Excavators_rev_B.indd 26

equipment leveraging electric power is the compact excavator market. Rodolfo “Tito” Sosa, product specialist and sales trainer for Hyundai Construction Equipment America, notes that the 1.5- to 2-ton machine size has been a particularly strong area of focus. When considering electric equipment for the rental market, simplification is key, says Sosa. “Something that doesn’t have all of the neat bells, whistles or gadgets so…the rental yard can get the most bang for [its] buck,” he adds. “Equipment owners need to look at whether they have the amount of jobs that require a zero-emissions machine to justify the added expense of an electric machine,” Padgett contributes. “It may be more cost effective even with the lower maintenance cost to rent vs. own if they do not have steady work for the machine.” As of right now, electric compact excavators (and electrified www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

1/13/20 9:34 AM

Because of the higher initial purchase cost, it can be more cost efficient for contractors to rent electric-powered equipment than to own. Image source: Kato

A number of factors are contributing to the growing interest in battery-powered machinery, including emissions-restricted applications. Image source: Takeuchi

The potential for electrified equipment such as compact excavators to become the rule and not the exception will be based on technology limitations. Image source: Volvo Construction Equipment

? vehicles in general) are a small portion of construction vehicles used and are primarily for niche circumstances, namely those that necessitate low noise and emissions. But as DeHaven points out, there are other benefits for prospective buyers or renters of electric equipment, such as reduced maintenance and fuel costs.

What Are the Challenges? The potential for electrified equipment like compact excavators to become the rule and not the exception stems from technology limitations. It’s no secret that battery technology is a significant detriment to widespread implementation due to high cost, slow power intake (charging time) and capacity issues for functions demanding high power output, such as digging. Consider that a recently released electric compact excavator claims to be fully charged in three hours and able to perform eight continuous www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

RPN0120_26-33_Excavators_rev_B.indd 27

operation hours. Comparing three hours of charging to the few minutes it takes to fill up a diesel tank, it’s easy to see why faster charging and longer operation are big hurdles to consideration of electrified equipment. “Production of battery packs and components is simply more expensive than a tethered or diesel-powered equivalent,” says DeHaven. “That cost is offset when you consider the reduction in emissions and noise pollution. However, the initial startup is more than we’re all used to paying.” In the end, it’s not a surprise that many feel as though electrified equipment is still years away from being a viable consideration with the high upfront costs and long return on investment. But as more jobs require low to no emissions of both pollutants and noise, electric vehicles will become more in demand, especially in the compact market — and, it would seem, starting with compact excavators.

More and more OEMs, including Hyundai, are working to add electricpowered compact equipment to their portfolios. Shown is an electric prototype displayed at ICUEE 2019.

HYUNDAI AND CUMMINS JOIN FORCES ON ELECTRIC EXCAVATOR Hyundai showcased a 3.5-ton electric zero-emissions prototype compact excavator at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE) last fall in Louisville, KY. The R35E compact excavator was developed collaboratively with Cummins Inc. using Cummins’ BM4.4E flexible battery modules (4.4 kWh each). According to Stan Park, vice president of distribution and marketing, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas, “Cummins sought out Hyundai for this project after it found growing interest — especially in the rental market — in fully electric-powered machines.” Park expects electric-powered models will be well received not only in the rental market, but in municipalities focused on “green initiatives,” urban construction environments, applications exposed to fire hazards and more. KOMATSU PREPARES TO LAUNCH ELECTRIC MINI Komatsu is combining its experience with hybrid construction equipment and electric forklift trucks to develop a 5-ton all-electric miniexcavator. The unit will deliver excavation performance on par with the internal combustion model of the same power output, while achieving zero exhaust emissions and a dramatic reduction in noise. The new electric mini-excavator uses the easy maintenance battery that powers the company’s FE-Series electric forklift trucks. From a full charge, this battery enables two to six hours of run time (depending on operating conditions). The battery also allows for quick charging. Learn more at www.ForconstructionPros.com/21063684.

CREATING AN ELECTRIFYING NEW JOBSITE EXPERIENCE In a study conducted by Waytek and Rental’s sister publication OEM Off-Highway magazine, a baseline was established for sentiment, actions and predictions around the introduction of electrification in heavyduty equipment. Seventy-five percent of respondents indicated their companies either would be or were likely to take steps to pursue electrification in the next year.

JCB BRINGS ELECTRIC MINI TO NORTH AMERICA The 2-ton 19C-1E electric mini-excavator is the first of JCB’s new E-TEC range of clean technology electric products designed to deliver the same performance as comparably sized diesel machines yet output zero exhaust emissions. The unit is powered by three lithium-ion batteries creating 15 kWh of capacity that enable the unit to complete a typical day’s work on a single charge. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

RPN0120_26-33_Excavators_rev_B.indd 30

The cost savings for maintenance was seen as a long-term payback considering electric drivetrains typically have fewer than 25 parts — and fewer components mean fewer chances for performance issues. But because the upfront cost of electric systems is more expensive than traditional fuel-powered systems, equipment owners and fleet managers need to understand the cost savings will occur over the course of a five- to 10-year ownership and operating period, depending on the type of equipment and its application use. TRENDS AND FUTURE OUTLOOK OF ELECTRIFICATION We will see a faster shift to electrified off-highway equipment in coming years as manufacturers rush to bring more energy efficient products to market, predicts David Venable, director - Off-highway Subsegment Leader, Cummins Inc. The clock is ticking as deadlines loom in countries across Europe to reduce emissions in diesel vehicles and equipment. Some communities in the U.S. are not far behind, he points out. “We’re seeing Europe be very aggressive. Obviously, California is very aggressive, as well,” Venable says. “I would forecast compact equipment in Europe, potentially California and then potentially some greener hot spots within North America evolve over the next decade.” Learn more in the podcast at www.ForConstructionPros.com/21090472.

opportunity and drive greater work site performance.” United Rentals is investing in its digital ecosystem — telematics, online self-service tools, benchmarking services, etc. — to provide solutions that can put actionable data into customers’ hands. McDonnell acknowledged that this investment is pacing ahead of the adoption curve among many potential users. However, he added, “Regardless of whether the industry is adapting to change as quickly as we would like it to, we feel it is our responsibility to lead the industry to make the investment so that if and when that next generation of consumers steps up to digitize their business, we’re ready.”

A

t its Total Control & Innovation Conference held in November, United Rentals announced further expansion of its “digital ecosystem” with the broadening of its Total Control system platform, a new mobile app platform, as well as new rental products and the launch of additional services for its customers. Part of a progressive expansion, the new offerings join an already broad spectrum of services extending well beyond the traditional rental business model. Oftentimes, when industry “giants” expand into new service or product areas, others work to follow suit, albeit at a slower pace and on a more limited scope. Consider companies like Apple, Amazon or, in the construction segment, Caterpillar and those who have tried to emulate them — some with more success than others. Organizations with the scale of United Rentals and the others noted above have a significant advantage over those striving to come after them, namely the size and scale of their www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

Taking Equipment Management Mobile operations. With tremendous resources behind them, the sky is virtually the limit. Yet, as those in the technology and other market sectors have discovered, even if you don’t or can’t follow in their footsteps, there are lessons to be learned from the steps these multibillion dollar entities are taking and the reasons behind them.

Ongoing Investment in Digital Solutions During the conference, Paul McDonnell, United Rentals’ executive vice president and chief commercial officer, discussed the changing environments the organization’s construction and industrial customers are facing. He noted that projects are getting larger and more complex and have grown increasingly difficult to manage. “Managing complexity of the modern work site is a major challenge, with huge opportunity for improved performance to be found for customers,” he stated. “Our digital solutions and innovation help customers — in the field and in the back office — capture untapped

Part of United Rentals’ digital investment has been in the ongoing evolution of Total Control, its cloudbased work site performance solution that enables users to manage both rented and owned equipment. Now in its 20th year, Total Control continues to be enhanced as customer needs change. “Today’s work site has equipment connected everywhere through telematics, making data a new currency of the work site,” Norty Turner, senior vice president, services and advanced solutions, told conference attendees. He noted that telematics is “bringing visibility across not just equipment but also people. And it’s the intersection of those two which is so important to so many aspects of the work site.” “Total Control has, at its heart, always been about... providing data back to people so that they could have insights to find productivity,” Chris Hummel, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, elaborated. “Everybody wants to take data and use it to make better decisions. So, the first part of that... is really about JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

AREAS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE TO CUSTOMERS INCLUDE: • Staying ahead of maintenance and inspections so that the preventive maintenance program is extending the equipment value • Knowing when to sell fleet and knowing how to replace it in the best way • Having access to parts at the right time and at the right price • Knowing how to transition the fleet from one job to the next • Understanding what to rent and what to own

connecting equipment. How do we get the sensors and trackers to unlock so much of that data that’s in the field and use that to drive productivity and better utilization. “What we then need to do... is to take that data and now present it back in a way that you can use it — put it in an actionable way so that you can get it through one digital platform,” he continued. This is achieved in part via Total Control’s enhanced user interface featuring faster, easier navigation. The next stage is delivering that actionable data in a way that customers can easily access it. To that end, United Rentals announced the launch of a new mobile app that connects with Total Control to provide users with 24/7 access to equipment management from the field. “The United Rentals Mobile App places the power of our digital tools directly with workers on the work site,” Hummel stated. “The app improves business efficiency by helping the field get a handle on what equipment they have, where it is located, how much they are paying for it, how often it is being used and when they need to return it.” The app can provide visibility into users’ equipment fleet across multiple projects and allows users to browse and order anytime from the United

Rentals equipment inventory. They can also track orders and deliveries, monitor its use, identify location, as well as off-rent and extend equipment rentals as needed. McDonnell sees this as a major step forward for both the company and its customers. “Something as simple as just off-renting a piece of equipment might sound very rudimentary or transactional,” he noted during an executive panel discussion with trade journalists attending the conference. “But getting the industry to shift — to start using digital to offrent equipment using the mobile app — [can lead] them to other things. “[Digital] is not a one-size-fits-all approach,” he continued. “We serve customers large and small... The digital needs for a smaller account might be very different than that for a large national account whose spend is much larger and complexity in projects is much greater...” But familiar technology like a mobile app offers a digital gateway to customers of all types and sizes. “Total Control is geared more toward the larger equipment enterprises and our key accounts,” Hummel acknowledged. “But the [mobile app is] not just for large enterprises. That’s for everybody.”

Benchmarking and Beyond United Rentals also plans to leverage its own experience, and data, that has been attained through managing what it describes as the world’s largest equipment fleet. “We have a [global] fleet size worth

greater than $14 billion (original equipment cost),” McDonnell pointed out, adding that a large percentage of those assets are equipped with GPSbased telematics. “The insight — it’s just an incredible amount of data. [We are] leveraging that data to help the customer and give the customer insight to drive productivity and efficiency in their business.” One example is the benchmarking tool that the company launched two years ago. United Rentals is able to utilize the data from its own fleet as well as customer data to deliver insights on not only how equipment is being utilized, but how that utilization compares to comparable equipment under like conditions. This benchmarking enables United Rentals to offer, and help implement, recommendations. “[Customers] want to find a way to bring the data from all their different connected work sites together so they can manage their whole equipment fleet. And we play a part in that,” Hummel said. “And they’re asking us to play a bigger part... Our customers are coming in saying, ‘There’s a lot of things going on here. I need somebody to help me bring these things together.’ “It’s a very fragmented space,” he added. “But the more we can start to pull strands together for them, we think it’s a big win for the customer.” According to Turner, 45% of the time, customers in the U.S. are bringing their owned equipment to the work site. “That’s billions and billions worth of fleet,” he said. “If www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

you’re owning equipment, you have to ensure that you’re maintaining compliance, that you’re repairing it, that you’re getting parts for it. Then you’re selling it off at the right time and replacing it with the right equipment... This is a burden they have. “Our customers are really great at building things,” he indicated. But United Rentals wants to take on those other aspects of the business. “We have so much experience and we’ve learned so many things from managing the world’s largest construction equipment fleet. “It’s something that we do thousands and thousands of times every single day,” he continued. “What it gets into is true life-cycle management.” United Rentals intends to put its expertise to work through its Customer Equipment Solutions division. The division has been building out a network of servicing locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, with 170 locations currently and 270 service technicians. “By the end of next year, we’ll have 280 locations and 480 technicians,” said Turner. “For some customers, right now, we’re taking that next step into fleet management,” he noted. “On select industrial sites, we’re not only maintaining, servicing, providing parts, repairing equipment, we’re also managing the equipment for them.” As its network continues to expand, the Customer Equipment Solutions division plans to expand into other industries. “We see the

opportunity to not just focus on industrial sites, but also commercial contractors who are operating equipment on multiple work sites,” Turner stated. “In the end, it’s about applying our learnings and our expertise to help [customers] get more performance from their fleets.”

More Tech to Come At the conference, United Rentals unveiled the next generation of the United Academy safety training and operator certification, as well as showcased virtual reality simulators, which offer opportunities for training, performance assessments, recertifications and more. But United Rentals is clearly not done yet. It continues to push the boundaries through its Advanced Solutions division. The division is exploring such advancements as wearables, 3D imaging services and remote monitoring of equipment such as pumps or generators and more. “Another example of innovation that we’re testing right now is autonomous vehicles,” said Turner. “We have

autonomous tracked skid-steer loaders in solar farms right now. “These are all really cool innovations and are starting to get at that productivity challenge,” he added.

Should You Follow the Trend? The giants of any industry are often the trendsetters. They have the resources and cash flow to take the leaps, and risks, required to set the pace. It’s clear that where United Rentals is heading, few rental businesses can realistically follow. That said, the steps it’s taking can be a window into the opportunities that are out there, as well as the influences behind them. Consider if any of the services United Rentals provides, its approach to meeting customer needs and/or the factors behind its digital investments have relevance to your own operation and customer base. If they do, let them spark ideas for steps you can realistically take to evolve your business model and adjust to the increasingly data-driven market in the years ahead. www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

DIGITALIZATION is a KEY PRIORITY for the Rental Industry Right Now Rental companies need to prioritize technology adoption to stay ahead of the curve.

Today, business owners can manage their entire operation all from their smartphone or tablet. They also have the ability to go paperless with the use of electronic signatures.

T

here is no denying the world is undergoing a digital transformation, but is the equipment rental industry keeping up? According to Greg Bennett, vice president,Point-of-Rental Software, the answer is no. He discussed digitalization and key priorities for the rental industry at the Access, Lifts and Handlers (ALH) Conference & Awards last September. Bennett noted that technology has helped transform many different industries and has helped optimize many businesses. For example, agricultural businesses have grown dramatically since incorporating new machinery and information technology. Farmers have adopted sensors, smart irrigation systems and many more new technologies to optimize their production. Likewise, the fast food industry has changed. Today, you can walk into a fast food restaurant and order from an electronic kiosk. Meanwhile, the kiosk gives you suggested items based on what you are ordering, encouraging you to buy more than what you went in to order. This has made sales go up by 30%, Bennett pointed out. “Technology is growing exponentially,” he said. “And the more you stay stuck where you are with technology, the further you lag behind.” Unfortunately, Bennett believes the rental industry has always lagged

behind, noting, “I do believe our industry is resistant to change, and I don’t think we’ve been good at adopting technology.” To get ahead, he indicated two technologies all equipment rental companies should already be incorporating, plus a new technology they should be looking at for the future.

Make Your Company Mobile Friendly Mobile phones aren’t what they used to be. Now, business owners can manage their entire operation all from the devices in their pockets. “I can chat, send emails, create quotes, log in to my CRM and interact with my customers all from that device,” Bennett said. Being able to communicate with your customers in the manner they want is the most important thing. And the truth is, younger generations want to interact through phones, said Bennett. So, if a company doesn’t have an online operating system, they are already behind. Businesses are able to do a lot of transactions through mobile apps, as well. For example, a driver can drop off a piece of equipment at a jobsite and the order can be finalized via a mobile app. Condition photos of the equipment can also be taken in real time and submitted via the app to report damage. “In the past, if we didn’t www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

N

communicate to the contractor that there was a damaged piece of equipment within a few hours, our likelihood of getting paid for that damage was almost zero. But today, we are communicating all of that stuff in real time,” Bennett said.

going to use it before they put it back. “That’s coming to our industry,” said Bennett, “so how are we going to adapt to it?” New technology is always emerging and companies have the opportunity to embrace, shape and

mold it into what will best work for their business. For now, Bennett feels there are technologies such as mobile apps and electronic signatures that not all rental companies are taking advantage of, but which are critical to staying ahead of the curve.

Consider Going Paperless According to Bennett, businesses have the ability to be 100% paperless because of electronic signatures. Electronic signatures can be used for anything, including project management, sales, purchasing or staffing documents. Apps such as DocuSign allow businesses to legally streamline all of their paper-based processes into an easier and secure format. Electronic signatures aren’t a new breakthrough technology, yet not every business owner has fully incorporated them. “The problem I find is for most companies, when you show up and start taking paper, they fight to hold onto it. But we have the ability today to be 100% paperless,” Bennett said. This is an example of the technology equipment rental companies have available to them but still refuse to fully embrace, he added.

The world authority in powered access.

Look Toward Rental on Demand Beyond taking advantage of available technologies, Bennett says it’s important to continue looking to the future if you really want to get ahead of the game. For him, this means thinking about the direction the industry is heading — and which he believes is going toward rental on demand. Bennett predicts daily, weekly and monthly rental rates will be going away. “The younger generation is not going to want to pay for a machine sitting on a jobsite collecting dust,” he said. Instead, he envisions the industry heading on a route similar to the latest scooter rentals. Customers will be able to walk up to a machine and only pay for the exact amount of time they are www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

SMALL RENTAL FLEETS

MUST

TRANSFORM

TO GAIN TELEMATICS BENEFITS Smaller rental centers require a “digital transformation” to fully understand the full benefits of telematics adoption.

T

elematics is gaining a foothold in rental fleets, but the push is being led by large rental service providers. Companies such as United Rentals, Sunbelt and Cat Rental have widely adopted telematics technology within their own operations and locations — and in some cases even offer it as a service to customers. “With construction telematics data being a relatively new field, it’s mainly these larger equipment rental companies that are using the telematics data today,” says Todd Brockdorf, Head of North America’s Solution Architecture, Otonomo. “Not so much in the small rental fleets.” However, Brockdorf foresees wider adoption among smaller rental operations within the next two to three years. “I see them as coming on board within the next couple of years, I would say, as the technology

46

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

RPN0120_46-47_Tech_Telematics_B.indd 46

becomes more prevalent, easier to adopt and designed for those smaller [construction equipment] rental fleets,” he predicts.

Transformation Required The struggle to fully understand and utilize telematics data continues to be a barrier to entry for many. “If I rent a Bobcat from United Rentals [or] from Joe’s Rental Shop, it fundamentally has the same technology on the machine itself,” Brockdorf comments. “It’s really about having the software to be able to consume the data that comes off of the machine and use that effectively within a rental organization’s operation.”

A large entity like United Rentals has the resources to develop software and tie the data generated into its back-end systems. “For the smaller operators, they may not have that ability just yet,” says Brockdorf. “And there probably aren’t enough largescale players supplying the software that would make using this data easily consumable for those smaller rental fleets.” In order to overcome this barrier, Brockdorf believes a digital initiative is in order. “First and foremost, the smaller rental shops need to make sure that they have some kind of digital transformation going on within their organization,” he states. “They need

Facilitating Telematics Service Development “The rise of telematics is making connected vehicle technology more accessible,” says Otonomo’s Todd Brockdorf, “and there are folks out there that are building services around those connected vehicle technologies.” Otonomo is a connected vehicle data services platform that works with OEMs and fleet providers to filter and disseminate telematics data to those developing these apps and services. “[Otonomo is taking] connected vehicle data, ingesting that into our platform, normalizing it, aggregating it, securing it and then providing it to folks that are building innovative applications and services around connected vehicle technology,” Brockdorf explains. “The benefit… to the owners and operators of the equipment is we can bring them innovative app and service providers to help enable their operations to become more effective.”

to [implement] systems that can talk with this new telematics data that’s coming off of the machines. “If they’re still using paper and pencil or a spreadsheet to manage their rental fleet, then it’s going to be hard to use telematics data,” he adds. Fortunately, there are tools readily available. “The good news is that a lot of manufacturers are providing basic

www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

RPN0120_46-47_Tech_Telematics_B.indd 47

apps and services to smaller fleet [owners],” Brockdorf points out. “So, the smaller fleets need to adapt to the new technology that is out there and available.”

Advantages to Adoption There are many reasons for rental centers of all sizes to adopt telematics. “The biggest use case would be

equipment theft prevention, and also any asset recovery that might be needed,” says Brockdorf. “That’s probably one of the biggest costs to their business. “The [construction] industry as a whole is trying to address a $400 million problem of equipment theft,” he continues. “Understanding the position of the equipment — if it is still on a jobsite, if it is moving on a trailer off of a jobsite unauthorized — these are the kinds of things that they’re using the telematics data to address… Loss prevention is one of the big areas in which they’re using [the] data.” Telematics lets you monitor asset location, as well as track utilization for more accurate billing based on the actual hours or days used. The data can also be used to plan maintenance based on equipment needs rather than hours of operation. Brockdorf cites the following example: “The equipment has been out on rent for the day and it was heavily utilized, so maybe it needs to be maintained on a closer schedule than what they had initially predicted. Not only can [the rental operator] see where it is but also the patterns of use with the telematics data that’s coming off it. Then, they’re able to better predict the downtime that’s required for their machine.” Ultimately, the rental center is better able to satisfy customers, he adds, because the equipment will be available when customers need it — all because you have better visibility into utilization of the machine. “For fleet operators, understanding their machines’ performance and predicting failures and when they need to maintain their machines is another key use case [for telematics],” says Brockdorf. “If their equipment isn’t up and operating, that affects the company’s performance and their ability to deliver on their commitments to their customers.”

Could AR Aid Service Technicians and Attract New Hires?

Technologies such as AR could change how service technicians resolve technical issues and how you can attract a new generation.

A

ugmented reality (AR) is a technology that mixes digital elements with real-world surroundings by using a camera on a smartphone or other device. This is not to be confused with virtual reality, which involves the immersion into a simulated experience that completely shuts out the physical world. Instead, AR seeks to enhance the physical world. Korry Kobel, director of engineering at JLG Industries, discussed the benefits of incorporating AR technology into the service technician field while speaking at the Access, Lifts and Handlers (ALH) Conference & Awards last September in San Diego. Augmented or “mixed reality” technology has been gathering pace across a multitude of industries for its ability to overlay digital information to the human field of view in real time. Kobel believes equipment service technicians could benefit from using this technology, as well. With the adoption of AR, construction equipment service

technicians could have the opportunity to optimize their service workflows, and you could have the tools to attract a new generation of technicians.

Optimizing Service Workflows Historically, service technicians were required to search through manual upon manual to find the information they needed. This could be a lengthy process if the technicians didn’t already have an idea of where to quickly find that information. With time, service technicians were able to transfer that information to desktops. The adoption of desktops was useful, but technicians couldn’t carry their desktops with them. It wasn’t until the laptop and smartphone that they could easily access and reference information wherever they needed it.

Now, they can go a step further. With AR, service technicians are able to hold up their smartphone or other mobile device to see the information displayed right in front of them as an overlay. All they need is a camera and the software to run the technology. AR can help technicians quickly execute field repairs. For example, a technician could go up to a machine, hold a phone in front of it and see instructions, data or other valuable information displayed on the screen. Kobel noted that sometimes technicians go into environments that are loud and

chaotic. AR would help simplify that and allow the technician to do the job without the added distractions. “Augmented reality is that tool that can help cut through the noise and chaos,” Kobel said. The ability to simplify their workspace with AR would optimize service workflows and allow technicians to resolve technical issues more efficiently than ever before.

Attracting a New Generation The equipment industry is having more and more difficulty finding service technicians. Kobel cited a poll that stated 64% of Millennials wouldn’t work in the industry even if they were paid more that $100,000 a year. He attributed this to what he calls the “expectation of education.” More Millennials have and are getting four-year degrees than past generations. This means that over time the industry has seen a decline in service technicians as more workers are seeking higher education. There is a likelihood that Generation Z will follow the same expectation, and possibly even more so. Those in Generation Z have grown up with information always at their fingertips, said Kobel. Their expectations of learning are simply much higher. Yet, he remains optimistic. “The good news is that over a third of the generation is willing to work in this industry,” he said. “So, I don’t think it’s as bleak as the poll shows.” Kobel believes that adopting AR technology could help attract this new generation of technicians because it would give them what they already expect — instant access to information. AR would modernize the industry, and it would help the new generation of technicians enter the field much faster by serving as a highly detailed visual training tool that would allow them to view and learn specific equipment details. The www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

on-the-spot training would cut loss of productivity and help new technicians enter the industry with ease. For Kobel, there is no doubt that adopting AR into the equipment industry would play a significant role in changing how technicians do

their work in a positive way. It would help them access information and resolve technical issues much faster. It would also help the industry attract a new generation of workers by meeting their growing expectations of technology.

NEW STANDARDS REFLECT MODERN MEWPS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

New ANSI standards reflect changes to outdated standards for lift equipment and the applications they are being used to perform.

The new ANSI standards better reflect today’s equipment — like Manitou’s new TJ-65 boom lift — and how it’s being implemented on work sites.

he new ANSI A92 standards for mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) were slated to go into effect in December 2019. However, due to a revision in the language of the standards stemming from the review process, the effective date has been pushed back to March 2020 (www.ForConstructionPros. com/21096673). Yet, the delay doesn’t make the need to understand the changes, or the reasoning behind them, any less urgent. “I think it’s worthwhile asking, ‘What are the changes being made, and why are they being made now?” says Andrew Delahunt, technical and safety director, International Powered Access Federation (IPAF). According to IPAF’s research, in 2018, there were 1.47 million MEWPs in U.S. rental fleets alone, translating to more than 1 million individuals operating MEWPs on a daily basis. machines in U.S. construction and industrial fleets and it makes up 40% of the global MEWP population. The rate of accidents is reflective of this volume. Between 70% and 80% of known fatal accidents related to MEWPs occur in the United States. “Obviously, it’s very important to reduce the number of accidents in all countries, but with the large amount of machines being used in the U.S., it’s important we do something here in [this country],” Delahunt stresses.

Modern Standards for Today’s Machines The revised ANSI standards represent a step in the right direction. “They’re [just one] part of the solution. The standards increase the safety systems on the MEWP, identify the best practices for using the MEWPs in a range of different applications and introduce improvements in training and improvements in how that training is provided,” Delahunt points out. He notes that scissor lifts, boom lifts and other elevated work platforms are being used in a range of applications not originally foreseen when the previous standards were written and then updated since 1980. The new standards better address both today’s equipment and how it’s being implemented on work sites. “The machines themselves have become more sophisticated and load-sensing systems have really progressed a long way since when they were first introduced on MEWPs,” says Delahunt. “The systems and the machines that we have now are — in my mind — very safe when used correctly.” The new ANSI standards reflect: ■ additional safety features that must be built into the machines ■ best practices for today’s applications ■ training requirements for both operators and supervisors to

58

The training requirements outlined in the new standards are intended to promote safer use of equipment such as Genie’s new GS-4655 slab scissor lift.

ensure all parties understand the risks involved and how to plan to prevent accidents

Frustration Ahead? Delahunt anticipates there will be some initial challenges when the ANSI standards go into effect in March. As an example, he describes the reaction when new MEWP standards were introduced in his native Australia in 2011. “We talked to a lot of the rental companies in Australia, and they all would say that their phones were running hot — that the operators were [saying] the machines were cutting out. ‘I can’t use it. Why is that?’ It’s the overload systems triggering because people were using the machines… beyond what they were safely designed for,” Delahunt explains. “It was a challenging period for maybe six months and then people started to understand how to use the machine safely and how to get the best out of the machines.” Delahunt anticipates a similar response in the U.S. as operators begin using the latest MEWP models. “There are going to be some challenges and people are going to be

frustrated with the safety systems that are designed to prevent the MEWP operating beyond its limits,” he predicts. “But it’s also quite an exciting period because these MEWPs are very sophisticated and provide a lot of good feedback about how to use a machine within the specifications that the OEM has provided.” So, while there will likely be some early grumbling, Delahunt believes it will be worth it as operation of the machines becomes safer and more efficient, and accident rates begin to decrease. “At the end of the day,” he adds, “the aim is to protect the workers in the platform and the people on the ground.”

POWERFUL Engine Options

Compact engine designs are evolving to include more technology aimed at increasing performance and lowering weight.

Use of fuel injection technology may be a trend going forward, and is included on Honda’s recently introduced V-Twin iGX800 generalpurpose engine.

P

erformance, fuel economy, starting ability and reduced maintenance continue to be the top compact engine traits desired by customers. Michael Logan, product manager, small horizontal engines, Vanguard (a Briggs & Stratton brand), says all of the company’s innovations have thus focused on providing these key aspects. Vanguard built its new 200 and 400 single-cylinder horizontal shaft engines from the ground up based on input from customers. “We developed our new engines around [the] key

62

areas of performance critical to improving overall productivity, including starting, maintenance intervals, service and support and total cost of ownership,” says Logan. “The ground-up design process allowed us to comprehensively engineer all-new carburetion, ignition

and combustion systems to promote reliable starting in any environment.” The engines are designed to start in temperatures as low as -20˚ F. All surfaces inside the carburetor that contact fuel feature a special corrosionand stale fuel-resistant coating to prevent starting problems. Maintenance and downtime are reduced as the engines are able to run efficiently for up to 200 hours between oil changes. Logan says this was achieved using a combination of improved machining processes, tighter tolerances, improved seals, cooler engine air temperatures and cleaner intake air due to use of a cyclonic air cleaner. The advanced fully cyclonic air filtration system further reduces www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

Advancing Engine Designs

downtime by extending recommended air filter replacement intervals to 600 hours vs. the typical 300 hours. According to Logan, the company is also seeing a trend toward lighter, more fuel-efficient engines offering reduced vibration and quieter operation. For the new 200 and 400 single-cylinder engines, Vanguard engineered the main components to lessen the impact of vibration, enhancing operator comfort and engine performance while also reducing equipment wear. “The design team www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

RPN0120_62-67_Engines_B.indd 63

worked to optimize the mass of the rotating components (connecting rod, crankshaft and piston) and optimize the CG (center of gravity) of the engine block,” Logan explains. “To improve overall engine noise, acoustic engineers not only emphasized reducing decibel levels, but also the perceived harshness of the engines’ sound.” When developing engines with reduced vibration and noise, he notes the importance of ensuring the structural integrity of the engine is not compromised to ensure durability within the extreme working conditions in which the engine operates.

To further increase performance capabilities, many manufacturers are adding componentry not often seen on compact engines. Hatz introduced its electronically controlled single-cylinder engine during last year’s bauma exhibition in Munich. It features an electronically controlled fuel injection system and digital control unit, as well as sensors and an electromagnetic valve specially developed by Hatz in partnership with Bosch. Known as E1, the technology enables smaller equipment to be connected with the Internet of Things (IoT). Continuous data is exchanged with the engine’s control unit, enabling analysis and various operating modes to be set. “With our new E1 technology, Hatz offers the platform for the next logical step — for the first time JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

FEATURE integrating machines with small engines into the advancing world of digitization,” states Bernhard RichterSchützeneder, director - sales and marketing at Hatz. David Bush, senior marketing strategist - engine, generator, pump and snow products, Honda Engines, believes fuel injection may be a trend going forward, noting it is included on the company’s new V-twin iGX700 and iGX800 general-purpose engines. “I think that’s going to become more of a trend, not only in the larger products, but potentially in what I would call smaller engines from 160cc up to 430cc (.16L to .43L),” he says. “It’s an expensive component, but I think [the industry is] probably going to be driving more to fuel injection if it can be cost competitive.” Bush notes most single-cylinder horizontal shaft engines currently use carburetors, which work well. But with fuel injection, there are the benefits of improved fuel efficiency and engine starting without having to use a choke. “You have less chance of flooding a product, especially in the rental industry, where users may not be as friendly with it,” he explains. “Fuel injection helps out with that... It’s just turn the key and go.” Emissions will likely have an impact on the design of compact engines in the near future, says Bush. This will be especially true for larger engines, such as V-twins and those above 20 hp and up to just under 1L (1,000cc). Typically, catalysts are used in larger engines to help with emissions

compliance. However, they are a costly component and many engine manufacturers are trying to avoid using them on smaller generalpurpose engines. They create a lot of heat, as well, which could be somewhat of a concern depending on the application in which the engine is being used. Heat generation and dissipation are important factors for compact engine manufacturers to consider, says Logan, as there is usually not as much space with which to work. With new emissions regulations, Vanguard sees customers looking for alternatives to diesel engines. “Often, they are turning to gasoline-powered options, which makes Vanguard a good solution,” Logan asserts. He adds that the company is constantly evaluating power technologies and developing solutions to meet customers needs, and will continue to do so as it sees more electric power solutions entering the market.

More Power in a Smaller Package Weight has become a larger concern for OEMs due to applications becoming smaller and more compact. “Because of that, smaller engines are becoming a more viable alternative than they were in the past,” says Logan. “As equipment becomes more efficient, customers don’t always need as much power as they have [previously]. And as designs have evolved, our engines are becoming more efficient and durable, making them ideal for larger pieces of equipment that used to be out of the compact engine range.” Early in 2019, Deutz Corp. introduced two new under-25-hp engines, the D1.2 and D1.7. The engines are naturally aspirated, three-cylinder configurations offered in 1.2L and 1.7L (1,200 to 1,700cc) displacement with output ratings of up to 25 hp. The engines can be used with the company’s E-DEUTZ products

FEATURE to provide customers with hybrid systems that are more efficient and environmentally friendly. “As we look to the future, our research has determined that more customers require engines in this particular power category as they downsize with more efficient powertrains,” states Robert Mann, Deutz president and CEO. As with larger engines, improving the power-to-weight ratio — getting more power out of an engine that is the same size or slightly smaller — has become a trend for compact models. Honda’s GX50 mini-four stroke engine is a compact, lightweight engine offering a powerto-weight ratio matching two stroke models. It features an overhead cam design with an internal timing belt. According to Bush, this helps reduce the engine’s weight and enable a more compact design, since there are fewer moving parts compared to a standard push rod engine often found in some

larger pieces of equipment. Fewer moving parts also helps to reduce component wear and maintenance. An electronic self-tuning regulator (STR) governor system enables smaller horsepower engines to operate at the same power level as those 2 or 3 hp larger. “With our STR governor, we’re able to keep a more stable power output so it acts much more powerfully,” says Bush. “We’re always looking forward at what we can do with our engines to make them better than they currently are,” he continues. “We’re always looking at opportunities to improve upon what we have.”

ggreko is a global specialty rental company that supplies power, temperature control and oil-free compressor technologies to various industries around the world. It takes its environmental responsibility seriously and is steadfast in its commitment to leveraging progressive technologies that lower carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions, while providing value for end users. As pressure intensifies for industries

around the world to reduce emissions and improve air quality, Aggreko has taken a sustainable approach to re-fleet its oil-free air (OFA) compressors. Oil-free air prevents contamination of pneumatic systems and the production of unsafe environmental condensate at a site.

The company’s electric OFA compressors have also been a popular option to reduce emissions. But in places where access to the electrical grid isn’t readily available, customers will need to provide their own power source. This is where an end user can opt to rent Aggreko’s diesel-powered OFA compressor. With the help of MTU’s 617-bhp 6R 1500 diesel engine, Aggreko is able to offer its customers a full line of EPAcertified Tier 4 Final diesel OFA compressors. The units deliver oil-free air at pressures up to 150 psig with flow rates up to 1,600 cfm. Each

In addition to meeting EPA Tier 4 Final standards, the MTU 6R 1500 diesel engine meets CARB and EU Stage IV non-road emissions regulations.

fuel efficiency which results in lower costs for end users, emissions compliance and reliability. In addition to meeting Tier 4 emissions standards, the MTU 6R 1500 diesel engine meets California Air Resources Board (CARB) and EU Stage IV non-road emissions regulations. By using advanced technologies such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to convert pollutants into harmless vapor, and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to reduce combustion temperature and lower NOx emissions, the engine achieves decreased environmental impact and reduced fuel consumption. The engine reduces particulate emissions through internal processes, eliminating the need for a diesel

particulate filter (DPF) to meet EPA/ CARB emissions standards. No DPF means no regeneration is required — a powerful and winning combination for businesses. “Aggreko is very happy with the MTU technology. Being Tier 4 compliant has greatly helped increase our presence with customers that have a need for this technology,” says Arce-Larreta. “Our compressors offer unmatched reliability and performance, which is a key differentiator for us.” In side by side trials of its MTUpowered units, Aggreko found that its OFA compressors saved 10% in fuel cost over competing products. For end users who run air compressors 24 hours a day, seven days a week, this provides significant cost savings.

very two years, Ditch Witch has a unique way of attracting attention to its booth at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE). Every hour or so, it revs up the 850-hp, high-stepping, dust-churning, earsplitting Super Witch trencher and lets the roar draw crowds from all across the extensive outdoor demo area. This past October, however, the Super Witch wasn’t the only thing drawing spectators. The new SK3000 — dubbed the industry’s first “full-size stand-on skid steer” — drew its own audience seeking to learn more about its unique features.

Big Power in a Cab-less Package Chris Thompson, product manager - compact utility loaders, Ditch Witch, describes the SK3000 as the “melding” of two machines — a full-size skid steer and a standon skid steer (otherwise known as a mini loader or compact utility loader). The newest addition is

the largest model in the company’s stand-on skid-steer lineup. The SK3000 is powered by a 59-hp Yanmar turbocharged diesel engine and generates a whopping 3,100-lb. lift capacity and 5,500 lbs. of breakout force. It has a 118-in. hinge pin height at full rated capacity for easy lifting of heavy materials and truck loading. Up to 51 hp is

directed to attachments for enhanced efficiency and performance, with the hydraulic system supplying up to 22-gpm hydraulic flow. The unit can travel at speeds up to 5.8 mph in both forward and reverse. “The SK3000 has the power, lift capacity and stability to complete the larger jobs that a traditional skid steer can, but it comes with the ability to

easily step on and off the operator’s platform and have increased visibility while operating the equipment,” Thompson points out. Many applications for skid steers or compact track loaders require an operator to climb over the attachment

to enter and exit the machine multiple times over the course of a project. “[The SK3000] eliminates this. You’re able to stand on and step off the machine,” Thompson states. This is especially beneficial in forestry, landscaping and hardscaping

applications. “When we developed this machine, the market we were targeting was anyone who needs to get in and out of the machine a lot, but they [need] to have that full-size capacity,” says Thompson. A stand-on platform is well suited for non-professional users, as well. “When you start thinking about the rental industry… people are intimidated by the big machines with the cages and climbing in and out and the lack of visibility,” Thompson points out. “This really gets them over that.” A limitation of many skid steers is it can be difficult to see to the side and behind the machine, Thompson comments. With the stand-on operator platform, all you have to do is turn your head to have 360° visibility.

Advanced Technologies Provide Intuitive Control The SK3000 has a 332-sq.-in. stand-on operating platform, standard dual-lever ground controls (singlelever joystick optional) and a 5-in. full-color LCD display. Advanced technologies built into the machine enable easy, intuitive operation. An exclusive Smart Throttle feature quickly matches engine speed to load demand. It is combined with an operator presence function. “What that means is that it will… idle down whenever you step off the machine and immediately idle back up,” Thompson explains. “That way, someone who’s on and off the machine a lot doesn’t have to mess with the idle [control]. It automatically does it for you.” Integrated hydraulic With the SK3000, all you have to do is turn your head to have full visibility around the machine. www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

system controls provide the ability to control all machine functions concurrently. In other words, you have the ability to simultaneously steer the machine and control the loader arms —without removing either hand from the controls. “Previously, that was a three-hand operation,” says Thompson. “This gives the customer full control of the machine.” An advanced hydraulic system offers 8-, 14- and 22-gpm flow settings that enable the operator to tailor the flow to the task. Hydraulic-operated attachment pins help reduce overall effort when swapping implements, plus operators are no longer required to get off the machine to swap nonpowered attachments. The machine’s universal coupler accepts any full-size skid-steer attachment. Controllability can be further enhanced with an optional dual selfleveling kit, which keeps loads level as they are raised or lowered. Optional automatic ride control is available.

Highly Movable Design The SK3000 is able to perform construction-grade work while maintaining a lighter weight package for easier maneuverability and transport. In order to achieve its rated capacity and maintain durability,

engineers designed the SK3000 with more steel — including steel panels and a steel fuel tank — plus a beefedup undercarriage. Yet, it is still lighter than many compact track loaders. “This machine… has all this power, but it only weighs 7,600 lbs.,”

says Thompson. “So, you’re able to fit it on a 10,000-lb. trailer and haul it without a CDL.” Learn more plus see the new model in action at www. ForConstructionPros.com/ 21094400.

SAFETY

An understanding of the basics will help you safely tow with a heavy-duty pickup truck.

aily rental operations require the transport of a wide array of equipment, with drivers frequently switching between trailers depending on the equipment to be transported. The capabilities of today’s heavy-duty pickup trucks allows all but the largest compact equipment to be moved without using a lowboy. However, these enhanced capabilities also mean that drivers need to pay closer attention to the details in order to prevent incidents in the field.

Identify Limitations Safe towing requires an understanding of trailer and tow vehicle capabilities. Often, the weight of equipment to be transported is miscalculated, resulting in overloading the truck and trailer. Each vehicle manufacturer assigns a tow rating, which is the maximum weight of the tow vehicle when loaded. Make sure your tow vehicle is up to the task. The tow vehicle’s hitch rating should meet or exceed the GVWR of the trailer you’re towing. This applies to the receiver hitch itself, as well as the ball mount and ball or pintle hitch assembly. Similarly, the trailer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is printed on a label or placard — often referred to as the certification or VIN label

— mounted on the left front side of the trailer, typically within 6 inches of the floor line or near the coupler. The GVWR is the maximum a trailer should ever weigh when loaded. The trailer gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is also listed on the certification label. According to the Trailer Safety Industry Coalition (TISC), this indicates the most weight an axle can bear. If the trailer has more than one axle, each axle will have weight rating information provided on the certification label. The construction of the trailer also deserves close examination. Not all trailers are constructed the same. Make sure there are sufficient crossmembers underneath the trailer to support the specific load you plan to haul. A 7,000-lb. trailer may not be appropriate for a skid-steer loader. Even though the overall weight capacity may be sufficient, the trailer is not designed for the weight loading produced by that

ensuring that the trailer tows properly, according to Felling Trailers. As a rule, when on a flat, level loading surface, the trailer should be higher in the front than the rear, so that when

Safe towing requires an understanding of trailer and tow vehicle capabilities.

In addition, don’t place excessive weight on either side of the trailer. If you do, the tire weight ratings on the heavy side will likely be exceeded and the trailer will not handle correctly. Even when properly loaded, a trailer will change vehicle dynamics. Any time a trailer is added to the back of a vehicle — no matter the size — there is going to be a significant degradation in the vehicle’s performance, whether it’s acceleration, braking, handling or stability.

Don’t Skip Pre-trip Inspections

piece of equipment. A car has a more dispersed weight where some construction equipment can produce very concentrated weight loading on the trailer. Note that trailers have a speed rating. Manufacturers usually state a 55- or 65-mph rating. The slower a rig travels, the less added weight or stress is placed on the trailer. The key is to select a unit that will perform at a fleet’s normal operating speed.

Load the Trailer Properly Weight distribution on a trailer is critical to safe performance. Too much of the load on the front is going to cause the tow vehicle to be unstable and it may cause under-steer or jackknifing. Too much on the back lifts the rear end of the tow vehicle, which causes trailer instability and swaying. The tow vehicle needs to be level. The front end of the truck should come back down to a level position. The hitch height is critical in

the trailer is fully loaded, the truck and trailer are sitting level. Don’t put excessive weight on the trailer tongue. A 10% to 15% tongue weight is common for bumper pull trailers and 20% to 25% for goosenecks and fifth-wheels. Under-loaded or negative tongue weight is worse than excessive tongue weight, and could cause loss of control, according to Felling Trailers. Take the time initially to understand where the equipment should be loaded. You may want to put a stop on the trailer. This could be a piece of angle iron that tells the operator where the vehicle being loaded needs to stop. It can be made to clip on so it can be easily removed if you need to move other equipment.

Once a trailer is matched to the load, a pre-trip inspection is in order and should be done prior to taking off with each load. Walk around the trailer and ensure there is no damage or cracks in the unit’s frame. Look for visible damage, such as chafed hydraulic hoses which could spring a leak and cause the system to fail. Inspect tie-down equipment such as chains, binders and straps for broken parts and pieces and make sure they are rated appropriately. These ratings can be found on the equipment being hauled. Also ensure the trailer isn’t leaning or sagging to one side. Check brakes and confirm the tires are properly inflated to the recommended psi. Over- or under-inflated tires won’t have the proper load rating so they won’t carry the weight like they should, which adds stress to the trailer. Traveling

with improper tires can also cause a blowout when hauling heavy loads. Drivers can find the pounds per square inch (psi), size, ply and load rating on the manufacturer’s VIN tag. Improper inflation pressure is the main cause of trailer tire failure. Because they carry greater loads, tire pressure for trailers is higher than the tow vehicle, according to the TISC. Tires can lose 1 to 3 psi per month. An underinflated tire builds heat faster, leading to quicker degradation. Check the lights. With the vehicle’s headlights on, all the relevant running lights, turn signals and brake lights should operate properly. Periodically use a torque wrench to check the tightness of trailer wheel lug nuts. Tandem axles don’t steer so the wheels on them are under greater stress when turning corners and likely to becoming lose, the TISC indicates. Every time you come to a stop or every time you get out of your vehicle, walk around the trailer. There are many dynamics and things can come loose. Check the safety chain. Check the coupler. Check to make sure the bolts are good in the hangers; it is fairly easy to see. Check your cargo straps. It needs to be a habit.

Regularly Replace Tires Trailer tires may be worn out even if they have plenty of tread left. Sitting for extended periods of time or carrying excessive loads shortens tire life. The average life of a trailer tire is about five years under normal use and maintenance conditions, the TSIC points out. After three years, consider replacing the trailer tires with new ones, even if the tires have adequate tread depth. The type of tires designates your travel speed. Most trailer tires are a Special Trailer (ST) version. ST tires don’t have a speed rating like normal passenger car and truck tires. The

BEFORE LEAVING THE YARD Never leave a jobsite or equipment yard without ensuring that the trailer’s electrical cable is properly connected and all exterior lights and the electric brakes are working. There are also several different types of brake controllers. They are all compatible with the trailer brake; but some are solid state, where you manually adjust the gain. It is always important to pay attention to that. Sometimes, a driver towing a heavy load will turn up the gain. Once the load is delivered and the driver prepares to leave, he taps the brakes and the trailer locks up, so he turns the gain down. When he returns for another load, he forgets to turn the gain back up. Then the driver doesn’t necessarily have enough brakes. Adjusting the brakes is known as synchronization. You need to synchronize your brakes every time you use them. Also ensure the emergency breakaway system is functioning properly.

trailer owner’s manual should tell you the proper speed at which those tires can be used.

Properly Secure the Load Chain and binder selection are critical to secure heavy equipment loads. Chain is not a large investment. If your chain is suspect, replace it. Chain comes in various grades and thickness. The most commonly used chain in securing loads is Grade 70, 3/8 in., which has a 6,600-lb. maximum pull. For heavier loads, there is a Grade 70, 1/2 in., with an 11,300-lb. maximum pull. Binders, chains, hooks and clevis pins should all be permanently marked with their capacity. Ratchet binders have twice the strength of mechanical lever binders, and they are also much easier to tighten than the lever binders. Whether its chains, ropes, wraps

or webbing, whatever secures the load must comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Regulations regarding the Aggregate Working Load Limit. The basic requirement is that tiedowns must have the combined strength equal to at least 50% of the load being secured. The way to calculate the aggregate load limit is to add 50% of the working load limit of each tiedown used to secure the load. If the total is greater than 50% of the load being carried, it is secured within the limit requirements. For example, assume that a trailer is being loaded with an 11,000-lb. telehandler, which will be held with four Grade 70, 3/8-in. chains. Since each chain is rated at a 6,600-lb. maximum pull, the aggregate working load limit is 6,600 lbs. divided by two. The total of the four chains added together is 13,200 lbs. www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

Make the Most of the Delay IN LEASE ACCOUNTING CHANGES

MaksimYremenko | iStock / Getty Images Plus

Certain private companies, nonprofits and tax-exempt organizations that lease equipment have been given an important advantage in implementing new accounting rules — more time. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) recently announced that the effective date of the new lease accounting standard, Accounting Standards Codification Topic

842 (ASC 842), for private companies and nonprofits has been delayed by one year, with implementation beginning after December 15, 2020.

cycle should help smaller reporting companies and private companies increase the quality of their implementation.

The delay will allow smaller organizations to get their accounting processes in place while they continue to enjoy the advantages of leasing equipment. Since ASC 842 went into effect in December 2018 for public companies, FASB members have expressed that companies with limited resources can learn from the implementation performed by large public companies that possess more staffing and resources. Having additional time to get through at least one annual audit cycle and regulatory

For companies that are still working to implement ASC 842, the year extension is particularly welcome to address areas that have posed challenges, including review of lease contracts and what constitutes a lease, software implementation, tax accounting and more.

EYE ON RENTAL // B y

Dick Detmer

BY DICK DETMER

HOW TO KEEP THE GOOD TIMES ROLLING Avoid complacency and invest in training to keep the good times going.

I

believe that the rental industry is still in very good shape. In fact, many rental companies have done so well for so long that there can be too much complacency. It is so important not to continue doing the same old things the same way — if they are not the best way. One of the main categories to avoid complacency is in the area of employees. Even in this very tight employment climate, excellent employees can still be found. Without solid, trainable employees, it is difficult to grow your business, so it is vitally important not to give up the quest. Stay positive and have a large number of “specific to your company” strategies to select, prepare, motivate and retain the best team. Consider an outside expert to assist in developing these strategies. Speaking of staff preparation, I am a firm believer in the importance of the initial, formative first week or two of the education process. It sets the stage for all of the other equipment and technical training to come. In my more than 40 years in this industry, I have trained thousands of rental professionals and feel that without the proper initial introduction to the company culture and systems, the new staff member will be at a disadvantage.

Be Kind to Customers One small change you can make is to train staff to make the “customer experience” kinder and friendlier.

98

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2020

RPN0120_98-100_EyeonRental_B.indd 98

Customers tend to return to rental businesses that have a kind, friendly and helpful atmosphere. The challenge is there are those who believe their company already has this type of atmosphere when in reality the opposite is true. In some rental firms, employees with the most exposure to customers have never been properly trained to smile when greeting them. Some front line employees even seem

COMPLACENCY TENDS TO LEAD TO A PLATEAU IN GROWTH AND THE NEXT DIRECTION IS SELDOM POSITIVE. grumpy toward them. And while a few customers appear to find joy in trying to make others miserable, you should not let that taint your staff with negativity toward the vast majority of nice ones. Make certain your employees know they should not argue or be antagonistic with customers. All of us have observed employees who seem to have “a chip on their

shoulder,” and one or more of your employees may have this condition. Often, they may not know how what they say (and how they say it) is perceived. For example, an employee may frequently use sarcasm when dealing with customers at the rental counter. In some cases, a tiny bit of good-natured sarcasm is funny, but more often it is unintentionally (or intentionally) hurtful — and could make customers go elsewhere for their future rental needs. Surprisingly, even some managers may think that arguing with customers is the only way to handle frustrating situations. Arguing is a useless, counterproductive waste of time. Train your staff in the best ways to handle each challenge. “Taking the high road” is almost always the best way to travel in business communication.

Worthwhile Investment There are other ways “to keep the good times rolling” in your rental business. For example, be certain that your rental fleet is strategically refreshed. Also, it might be time to invest in different rental software. But always remember the importance of investing in your staff — even knowing some of them will leave at some point.
