STEADY ON

I’m writing this on the eve of the 2023 American Rental Association (ARA) Show, and while the past few weeks have given me a taste of what products will be showcased there, I can’t wait to see what the trade show floor and education sessions have in store for me.

This will be my first time attending the ARA Show, and I can imagine that much of what manufacturers and rental companies owners have to talk about will echo what people relayed to me in writing Rental’s annual State of the Industry Report.

Challenges over the last year have included a global supply chain crisis, labor shortages, high inflationary and pricing pressures and increasing regulations. And yet, overall, rental companies and manufacturers supporting the industry are optimistic about the year ahead.

Homeowners investing in their outdoor spaces meant more business from both landscape contractors and DIYers. New technology such as software, telematics, autonomation and battery-powered equipment have allowed rental companies to become more efficient despite the labor crisis. And, while the supply chain situation was looking pretty sticky for a while, it seems as if the issues are cooling off

as we begin 2023 and look forward to 2024.

You can find the rest of that story on p. 16.

In addition to our State of the Industry report, this issue includes a variety of other useful content as well.

In our business management department, attendees of the ARA’s Women in Rental event describe what the event entailed and the significance behind being women in a male-dominated rental industry (p. 24). Our construction department lays out a few “musthaves” for rental companies regarding their skid-steer fleets (p. 26). Our general tool section describes how rental companies can ensure handheld outdoor equipment is maintained and ready to go for contractors using it for spring cleanup purposes (p. 32). And, as a bonus, our power department advises rental companies on how they can help their customers in sizing generators and compressors appropriately to applications (p. 34).

And, as always, and our columnist Dick Detmer offers up his two cents, this time on what rental companies can do to make sure their staff is fully educated ahead of the busy spring season (p. 42).

What’s your take on how 2023 will pan out for the rental industry? I’d love to hear it—and I’m sure your fellow readers would, too.

TIPS FOR PURCHASING A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL

An advanced diagnostic solution is a vital tool for organizations looking to improve safety and maximize uptime on their vehicles and heavyduty equipment. Therefore, before you invest in a diagnostic tool, consider the following tips.

Broad Coverage

A diagnostic tool should be user-friendly and provide the features and coverage you need to maintain and service your fleet. Evaluate diagnostic applications and consider which one will help elevate the skills of your technicians and help them service your wide array of vehicles and equipment.

Additionally, purchasing a diagnostic solution that covers most of your fleet will simplify your technician training efforts and make it easier for them to become proficient on the tool they use for most jobs.

Hardware Considerations

Whether in a service bay or construction site, your diagnostic tool needs to be rugged enough to withstand the harsh environment. Therefore, we highly recommend you purchase diagnostic kits that include new, ruggedized devices. Due to how quickly computer hardware becomes obsolete, opting for a refurbished model often puts you a few years behind before the device ever reaches the technician’s hands.

Reputable Software

Once you determine the best solution for your business, purchase it from a reputable vendor. You may find companies or individuals selling pirated software as a legitimate option; avoid these offerings. Not only is it illegal, but pirated software is typically a few versions behind, does not include ongoing software updates, and will not give you access to software support.

PLANT AND HIRE AID ALLIANCE AIMS TO SEND 10K GENERATORS TO UKRAINE

The Plant and Hire Aid Alliance, in association with Rotary International, has called on the rental industry to donate to its latest initiative: Power to Ukraine, which aims to send 10,000 generators to Ukraine. The Plant and Hire Aid Alliance, a group of rental companies and suppliers, was created to help Ukrainians during this time of need.

Following attacks on the power grid and other infrastructure, many Ukrainians get only three hours of electricity per day. In the meantime, winter temperatures in the capital, Kyiv, can reach as low as 24 degrees F during the day and 12 degrees F at night. Additionally, out of a population of 44 million people, nearly 10 million Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes, estimated Jeremy Fish, CEO of Ardent Hire Solutions, which set up the Alliance.

“There must be a lot of people in the U.S. who are watching and saying, ‘I’d like to do something, but I’m not sure what to do,’” Fish said. “We need U.S. rental companies to support this and get running behind this. Just imagine what it’s like in those cold conditions. Imagine your neighborhood has been bombed, you’ve got no job, no electricity, no heating and maybe no water, with no prospect of it coming back.”

The generators will be bought in small batches so they reach Ukrainians sooner and will be sourced from Europe to simplify logistics.

IPAF RELEASES UPDATE REGARDING EMERGENCY STOP FUNCTION IN MEWPS

The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) has issued a further update in regard to industry concerns around the use of the platform emergency stop function in mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) following another meeting of its training, safety and technical experts, representatives of IPAF’s Training Committee, International Safety Committee and Manufacturers’ Technical Committee.

“IPAF convened another meeting of its safety, training and technical experts and committee representatives to consider ongoing issues of concern around the use of the emergency stop, or ‘E-Stop’, to isolate platform controls in order to mitigate risk from unintended or accidental movement of machines while occupants are working at height,” said Brian Parker, IPAF’s head of safety and technical. “IPAF conducted a survey of equipment manufacturers to establish the level of concern about this widespread industry practice, and while the majority of respondents were unconcerned, a small but significant number of respondents said that they do have concerns about using the emergency stop to isolate platform controls while working at height.”

NEW GUIDELINES AIM TO REDUCE ENTRAPMENT AND CRUSHING INCIDENTS

The Construction Industry Plant Safety Group (CIPSG) and International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) published revised safety guidance about how to reduce the risks of trapping and crushing incidents when using mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs).

The 22-page Good Practice Guidance for Reducing Trapping/Crushing Injuries to People in MEWPs is now available to view and download free of charge from either the IPAF or Construction Plant-Hire Association (CPA) websites.

Entrapment injuries to persons in a MEWP are usually serious and often fatal. The guidance has been produced by the CIPSG for MEWPs to raise awareness of the risks and covers the measures that can be used to reduce them. It contains guidance on planning, risk assessment, MEWP selection, operator training, familiarization and rescue.

LEANING INTO THE FUTURE OF EQUIPMENT RENTAL

Software and sustainability proved to be hot topics at the American Rental Association’s (ARA) inaugural Future of Equipment Rental event, held Feb. 11.

During the one-day event, industry experts and participants discussed best practices and technologies to propel participants’ businesses forward.

On the software and technology side, panelists, speakers and attendees examined the benefits and challenges associated with telematics and tracking software, business management platforms, digitizing and streamlining processes and more.

“Our biggest issue is labor, so we’re always looking at how something reduces labor costs,” said Steve Mau, president and owner of Brainerd General Rental in Baxter, Minn., and panelist during the session entitled “Learn how to address ongoing and future business improvements.” “The fewer people who touch something and the fewer people who communicate about something, that’s what’s impacting our labor.”

From a sustainability perspective, discussion centered around electrification of equipment, hybrid options and alternative fuel sources such as hydrogen. While some

attendees already had experience with batterypowered equipment and alternative fuels, others expressed that their regions and clientele bases had not yet started to demand that they carry that type of equipment and technology.

Brad Coverdale, vice president of fleet and product support at Sunbelt Rentals and panelist on the “Rental fleet management” panel noted that companies shouldn’t overcomplicate the concept of sustainability.

“It comes down to whether you want to be around in five to 10 years,” Coverdale said. “It’s using the same core principles that you already have in place with just a little more intentionality toward the environment.”

2023 STATE OF THE RENTAL INDUSTRY

Rental

company owners and equipment manufacturers analyze the factors affecting the rental market and the contractors who rent.

COVER STORY // 16 MARCH 2023 www.ForConstructionPros.com/ RENTAL

The rental industry encountered many challenges throughout 2022: a global supply chain crisis, labor shortages, high inflation, increased prices and heightened regulatory pressures—all of this in a time where the world was still shaking off the effects of a global pandemic.

And nevertheless, the rental industry moved forward.

More time spent at home meant that homeowners were investing in their outdoor spaces and more business coming from both DIYers and landscape professionals. Manufacturers released a multitude of new products, embracing emerging technology such as autonomation, telematics and battery power. And rental store owners found ways to become more efficient to stave off labor and supply chain concerns.

“We’re coming off a couple exceptional years in rental, and many people had record years in 2022,” says Josh Nickell, vice present of the American Rental Association’s (ARA) equipment segment. “I’m not necessarily saying that 2023 will have the amazing increases that we’ve seen in the last couple of years, but the rental industry is still poised for strong growth. I would say industry-beating growth, meaning that we’ll be growing faster than the construction industry will be growing and faster than a lot of other industries.”

To get a true sense of the industry’s well-being, Rental magazine reached out to rental company owners and manufacturers in the industry to get their perspective on how 2022 panned out and what’s in store for 2023.

HOW

WOULD YOU DESCRIBE

THE CURRENT STATE OF THE RENTAL INDUSTRY?

“As 2022 came to a close, our company, Nor-Cal Equipment Rentals, enjoyed a banner year, but it doesn’t come without challenges. The supply chain issue for equipment and parts did affect us in a big way like I’m sure it did for everyone else. It will most likely continue for 2023 and hopefully catch up and be back to somewhat normal by middle of 2024.”

projects. This, in turn, means rental centers are also seeing high demand for safe and productive equipment that can help contractors tackle more jobs with crews that are often stressed by a limited workforce. Lead times for new equipment remain extended, but rental companies who have been able to navigate that challenge have had great revenue opportunities in the past year.”

WHAT WERE THE TOP CHALLENGES FOR THE RENTAL INDUSTRY IN 2022?

1. Labor

“We struggle to keep up with the growing demand of skilled labor. We are focusing on in-house training to meet our needs.”

“The workforce issue is obviously a much longer, much bigger issue that’s impacting all of the construction industry. It’s finding tradespeople, mechanics, drivers and service technicians.” — Nickell

2. Supply chain issues

“Supply chain issues are still lingering from last year, but equipment manufacturers are starting to feel relief. While we are still in a constrained supply environment, our teams are intensely managing the supply chain and our manufacturing operations, working to achieve the best possible outcomes. We do expect the current supply chain dynamics to continue to improve and are seeing more of a ripple of delays versus the waves that were common in 2022.”

“Throughout 2022, contractors have continued to face high demand for fencing, landscape and general construction

“We did a survey a few months ago, and based on the survey responses, rental companies could have 20 percent more demand if they had access to more equipment. So, there’s a lot that they’re leaving on the table and could be achieving and growing with if they could access more equipment. Before, the average fleet age tended to be around three to threeand-a-half years for all categories of equipment in the rental industry, but now, we’re looking at more like three-and-ahalf to four years. So, one of the ways that they’re managing the needs of customers and the shortage of equipment is by

MARCH 2023 17 www.ForConstructionPros.com/ RENTAL

not selling off equipment, despite the fact that the equipment is incredibly valuable, more valuable than usual. They’re hanging on to stuff despite the value and running it a little bit longer than they normally would to make sure their fleet size is where it needs to be.” — Nickell

3. Crime

“Another issue that has affected us has been crime. Here in California, it has become and is becoming a bigger problem. Law enforcement has worked with us and is doing their very best, but lack of funding and officers along with criminals not facing proper punishment has resulted in an equipment crime spree like we have never seen.” — Butts

4. Inflationary pressures

“Rental companies’ customers, the contractors and the DIYers, are all dealing with a lot of inflationary pressures and concern and uncertainty around that. Right now, rental companies are being creative and improving their operational efficiency and partnering with their customers and making quality recommendations on when they should rent, when they should take stuff off of rent and notifying contractors that have low utilization on a piece of equipment. That’s good for the contractor because they’re not paying for something they don’t need, and then it also allows the rental company to serve another customer.”

WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE TAKING OFF IN THE RENTAL INDUSTRY?

1. New technology adoption

“One trend we see every year is bigger is better. Customers want innovation. As a rental house, we partner with different manufacturers in the industry and strive to give them the newest items to hit the market.” — Boland

“The shift to hybrid power sources can help many operators meet emissions regulations while maintaining productivity. Using battery power can eliminate the need for the truck engine to idle while running an air compressor or even a crane. This not only helps lower the carbon footprint,

but it also reduces maintenance and fuel costs. These options are increasingly appealing for rental houses looking for alternative power options.”

2. Sustainability initiatives

“As emissions regulations continue to evolve, many contractors are looking for ways to meet environmental regulations, and battery-powered equipment is often the answer. Having battery-powered equipment as part of a rental store’s offering also increases the options available to contractors working on unique jobsites, such as in highly populated urban areas with noise ordinances and indoor applications. For these types of jobs, battery-powered equipment offers contractors more flexibility and easily increases productivity and efficiency.” — Ingli

“One megatrend is sustainability. We fundamentally have to change the way in which we operate around the world. If you look at electrification and net zero, that’s substantial investment required to achieve the net-zero objectives people have set up.”

3. Software

“I think that rental companies more than ever are focused on digitizing their processes as much as possible, improving the efficiency of their processes. Every minute that a piece of equipment is waiting to be serviced is a minute that it could be waiting to be delivered to another customer, or if that piece of equipment is down, it can’t be rented to somebody else. That has caused them to spend a lot more time on squeezing out efficiency in their operations, which is not something they’ve had to do in the past in the same way. They’re utilizing their rental software, and their enterprise resource planning is a lot better.” — Nickell

4. COVID forcing companies to analyze their business

“I don’t know of a single person who isn’t tired of the word ‘COVID,’ but the truth is that it did force us to look closely at a lot of areas of our business. Many manufacturers went from a single supplier for components to multiple suppliers to combat long lead times. Others went to custom manufacturing shops to combat the issues of reduced labor. All these moves helped companies learn and grow. We also saw a big trend toward moving some manufacturing and component sourcing back to the U.S. The challenge will be remembering where we were and the lessons we learned

Quality products made by quality manufacturers have always been the expectation, and now, being able to support those products in the field will also be key. Downtime is a dirty word in this industry, and having the ability to service equipment in the field is crucial to providing customers the well-rounded experience they’ve come to expect.” —

“Versatility and productivity are always driving trends in the industry. The push toward powerful and easyto-use equipment in the rental space is being driven by those factors, plus enhanced technology supporting new electrification opportunities, government programs driving electric adoption and jobs requiring use of battery-powered equipment for noise reduction.” —

6. Increased business from contractors

“Nobody likes interest rates increasing the cost of doing business, but rental companies are used to that and prepared for that. A contractor, on the other hand, a few years ago, might have bought a piece of equipment because of a low interest rate, but now renting looks like the better option.”

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR 2023?

“In 2023, we are cautiously optimistic. We are expecting growth to slow to single digits; however, we still expect a strong year overall.” — Boland

still constrained today, and so it will take some time for the industry to come back to more historical trends. The third variable is around adoption. Now we see large economies that will start to adopt our products.”

“2023 looks to be just as strong if not stronger than 2022. Hopefully build schedules for equipment continue to improve so we can all benefit.” — Butts

“With rumblings of a looming recession, we can expect it to be a very strong year for the rental industry. When there is uncertainty or a challenging economy, contractors look to run their businesses with less capital investment and risk, leading them to rent equipment rather than buy it. The same challenges drive end users to tackle some of their own projects, and they rent the equipment. What’s compounding this even more is two years of supply chain issues and long backlogs that make it hard for contractors, end users and rental centers to get equipment. Rental centers stocked up on equipment will see a very strong 2023.” — Haynes

“There’s incredibly strong demand from homeowners and contractors alike for rental equipment, and we expect that trend to continue over the next five years. Rental equipment offers customers lower upfront costs compared to buying equipment outright and gives them flexibility on the jobsite. Rental houses that invest in new equipment technology will have an advantage as customers continue to look to rent new, productivity-boosting equipment over the next five years.” —

“We’re very optimistic about our outlook, and it’s really a function of three variables. First is fleet growth for our rental customers. Second is an amplified replacement cycle. Our industry has been constrained the past couple of years. We’re

WOMEN WARRIORS in Rental

Imagine having decades of experience under your belt and walking into a meeting with customers and having them look right past you and engaging with your less experienced counterpart instead.

Marti Wenzler, strategic account manager at Lawson Products, can’t count the number of times this has happened to her, despite having been in the industry since 1998.

“It’s very common, and I know many women who own rental companies who have shared similar experiences,” Wenzler says. “Traditionally, it’s not a woman’s world, and there are absolutely stereotypes that we’re still challenged with overcoming, but it’s evolving so much more.”

While women have gained a foothold in the rental industry recently, there is still progress to be made.

That’s where events like the American Rental Association’s (ARA) Women in Rental come in. The annual event took place in Scottsdale, Ariz., in December 2022, in conjunction with the ARA’s Young Professionals event.

“It’s great for women with shared challenges and questions and interests to support each other and learn from each other,” Wenzler says. “There is a wonderful and diverse range of experience within the group, so together, we can solve just about any equation.”

Attendees and organizers of the ARA’s Women in Rental event share their takeaways from the event, touch on what it means to be women in a male-dominated field and offer their advice for other women in the industry following their lead.

WHAT HAPPENED

The event itself featured ample opportunities for attendees to network with one another through receptions, activities throughout Scottsdale and meals with the Young Professional event attendees.

The event also boasted education sessions, led by Sara Frasca, COO at Point Northeast, a global business coaching firm, and an innovation and business growth expert.

Frasca’s presentation focused on three strategies to create positive disruption in the industry: how any problem can be solved through creativity, how changes to rules, environment, speed and vantage point will change outcomes and how grit,

tenacity and constant experimentation can guide attendees to success in their businesses and in their careers.

“We learn so much from these presentations as the speakers are tailored to communicate with women,” says Angela Nussel, vice president of administration for Premiere Events. “A lot of times, you hear a speaker and you feel like you can achieve anything, but there are no practical applications. Frasca actually gave us a way to apply the tools.”

Christine Hammes, vice president of association services, ARA, adds that Frasca’s presentations and the spirit of collaboration and connection further encouraged attendees to implement their takeaways once they returned to their respective companies.

“It’s giving attendees the confidence and empowerment to think, ‘there’s no reason why I can’t create a different

Hammes says. “It’s empowering them to have the confidence to go back and implement new tools. We’re also trying to elevate (the programming) in how we’re going to help them keep climbing that ladder.”

BETTER TOGETHER

With the rental industry being comprised of fewer women than men, Annie Ricci, vice president of Bigfork Rentals in Flathead County, Mont., says being a woman in the industry can feel isolating.

career days and job fairs.

“It’s a great industry for women from both the business and supplier sides,” Wenzler says. “I came into the industry halfway through my career, and I wish I had known about this so much sooner.”

ADVICE FROM WOMEN

• “Put yourself out there. Joining groups and making connections in the industry is where you gain confidence. The more connections you make across the industry, the more helpful it is and the more it empowers you on your career trajectory.” — Christine Hammes, vice president of association services, American Rental Association

• “The most important thing for women is to be nice to ourselves. We have all these little voices in our head of self-doubt and self-criticism, talking us out of our successes. Don’t get discouraged. As women, we do have to work harder than men in general to be respected, but we can do it. If we’re willing to put in the work, there’s no stopping us.” — Angela Nussel, vice president of administration, Premiere Events

• “Seek out opportunities to connect with other professional women—no matter what the industry—so that you find support.” — Annie Ricci, vice president, Big Fork Rentals

• “As women in the industry, attending events like this creates a safe space to find shared interests and common challenges through networking with likeminded professionals.” — Marti Wenzler, strategic account manager at Lawson Products

noitaicossAlatneRnaciremA

The networking aspect of the event stuck out to Ricci as she noticed attendees connecting, sharing with one another.

“There’s the need for women to have the support of other women and to know that they’re not the only one going through something,” Ricci says, who has experience herself in being overlooked, with customers coming in and saying that there’s no one to help them, despite her presence at the front counter.

To make even more progress with drawing more women to the industry, Wenzler suggests rental companies reach out to high school and colleges through

WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION AND RENTAL

The rental industry isn’t the only industry lacking women—the construction industry is also heavily male dominated.

With March designated as Women in Construction month, the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) conducted focus group interviews with 200-plus women across the construction industry.

“We want to get more women in the industry not only because it benefits the industry itself by bringing in skilled workers in a labor shortage, but it also provides opportunities for individuals who want to change their lives,” says Tim Taylor, director of research for the NCCER. “What’s more, equipment rental is a gateway to get women into the construction industry.”

SKID-STEER Must-Haves

Manufacturers lay out what skid-steer features should be available in rental fleets.

As companies rent out skid-steers, simplicity is typically the name of the game, according to Jeff Jacobsmeyer, product manager, Case Construction Equipment. After all, companies generally won’t know how proficient the individual that’s renting from them is regarding skid-steer operation.

“Consequently, bells and whistles aren’t as important when you’re adding a machine to your rental fleet,” he says. “Knowing the profile of your local rental customer is critical.”

For instance, if large-scale professional contractors are renting, they’ll tend to have the experience and operators that are necessary for working with larger, more powerful machines. However, if a company is a local rental operation that tends to serve smaller businesses and “weekend warriors,” it will need to provide a solution that’s effortless to maintain, operate and own.

In addition, consider including a more comprehensive auxiliary hydraulics package with skid-steers. Utilization is key—if a skid-steer’s

utilization rate is high, it will likely be more profitable long term. Of equal importance, rental companies should offer various attachments with the skid-steer. If companies provide more attachments, equipment will become more valuable to renters, leading to higher probability that they’ll rent again.

“At the same time, electrohydraulic controls can be a big help, as they’ll offer flexibility to your rental customers, in terms of control patterns and setting machine responsiveness to their liking,” Jacobsmeyer says. “If your customers have multiple operators on every jobsite, every operator can set the machine to their own preference and set saved profiles.”

GRADING TECHNOLOGY AND COUPLERS

While reflecting on rental fleets’ most significant features, Luke Gribble, solutions marketing

manager, John Deere, adds that contractors’ comfortability, efficiency and versatility are vital, too.

“Time is money on a jobsite, and operators are always looking for equipment that will help them get the job done faster,” he says. “While boasting versatility, operators will likely gravitate toward renting a skid-steer with multiple functions that will boost their overall efficiency and convenience and toward a machine that prioritizes comfort.”

With this in mind, skidsteer fleets should have features like technology that will provide customers grading assistance, controls that are easy to utilize and couplers that will allow renters to effortlessly switch between attachments.

“As a renter or rental fleet owner, you should also look into other options that enable operators to check the cross slope (roll) and mainfall slope (pitch) of their skidsteer from the comfort of its cab,” Gribble says. “Other third-party options like box blades with laser control can help customers maintain proper grade on their jobsites.”

Optionality for control types is in high demand as well. Although mechanical controls are still offered on skid-steers, EH controls are becoming more and more popular.

“By adding an EH joystick performance package, operators will have maximum versatility as they’re able to choose between four-way switchable controls: ISO, H-pattern, foot controls and a combination of ISO and foot controls,” Gribble says. “The EH joystick performance package will also allow operators to control customizable settings like switching from accelerator to decelerator pedals and implementing creep control mode, in order to perform precise tasks while utilizing their skid-steers’ full power.”

Furthermore, couplers enable one

to replace general purpose buckets with fork attachments in seconds. As a result, companies can achieve several goals with one machine.

“Generous standard and optional high-flow auxiliary hydraulics will allow rental companies to run powered attachments, such as hydraulic hammers, planetary augers and trenchers,” Gribble adds. “These specialized attachments are not only able to handle a majority

couplers, rental companies can use several other features to ensure they provide customers the most adequate skid-steer loaders possible.

For instance, if a rental company serves a large customer base, it’ll likely need to offer skid-steers that have different style controls.

To best determine which style controls to offer, it’s important to fully understand the customer base’s overall needs, first and foremost. Take the time to discover which applications will perform the most adequately with customers’ preferred skid-steer loaders. In doing so, companies can choose the most sufficient features to include with a rental fleet.

“Your rental company should also consider including skid-steer loaders that are equipped with twospeed travel,” says Mike Fitzgerald, marketing manager, Bobcat. “This feature is a time saver for operators who need to move materials over a large jobsite or have to travel between jobsites.”

Additionally, attachment versatility is key. Therefore, rental companies may decide to purchase skid-steer loaders that can power a wide array of standard-flow and high-flow attachments. Upon doing so, customers will be able to match their application and attachment performance with whichever hydraulic option is the most suitable for them and their unique requirements.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Aside from attachments, grading assistance technology, EH controls and

“By considering each of these features, you’ll have a better chance of discovering which ones are the most ideal for your rental company, as you strive to maximize your skidsteers’ ROI as quickly and consistently as possible,” Fitzgerald says.

What is a Spider Lift?

A Spider lift is a self-propelled boom-type mobile elevating work platform which is designed to be light in weight, as compact as possible, and uses 4 stabilizer legs to achieve stability and levelling.

More business owners are choosing to rent or purchase a spider lift as they offer several benefits compared to trailer mounted lifts. This includes their compact size for accessing difficult locations and their 4WD self-propulsion to move quickly and traverse terrain that would stop other heavier or more cumbersome machines.

They are used in multiple industries including tree care professionals, solar turbine maintenance, stadium maintenance, TV & Film crews, painting contractors, restoration contractors, building maintenance, construction sites and utility work. For many applications such as tree maintenance, the light-weight design of Spider lifts is a huge advantage, as it allows them to be towed behind a variety of vehicles.

A spider lift is the ideal aerial work platform to perform tasks at great height in limited spaces. With its four legs, a spider lift provides extra stability at every construction site. The light weight that characterizes this type of aerial platform makes the spider lift ideal for working in spaces that are easily damaged, for example when performing maintenance tasks indoors.

A spider lift is an ideal solution when working on great heights indoors, but can also be used on construction sites outdoors, in any weather condition. The lift is specially designed to access areas that more traditional cherry pickers can’t reach, and is often used instead of traditional and expensive scaffolding systems. How to Maintain Equipment Ahead of Spring Cleanup Season

Manufacturers detail how rental companies can make sure equipment is in tiptop shape for their landscape contractor customers ahead of spring cleanup season.

Maintaining spring cleanup equipment ensures the busy season starts off on the right foot.

“Maintenance enhances the life of the product, and without it, you’ll face expensive repair bills,” says Noah Hunter, director of customer care, technical support and warranty at Husqvarna. “It’s simple. Landscape companies can’t work with broken equipment. Routine maintenance means small issues can be resolved before they become large and take equipment out of commission.”

Manufacturers provide advice for how rental companies can make sure equipment is in tiptop shape for their landscape customers ahead of spring cleanup season.

INSPECT EQUIPMENT

Ahead of the spring season, it’s important to take an equipment inventory.

“When you’re pulling the equipment out of storage, go through things,” says Jason Wilk, senior product manager at Echo. “Make sure air filters are clean and in nice shape. Make sure you don’t have cobwebs or anything. I’ve seen mufflers get packed with insects over the storage time range, and that will prevent the unit from starting or accelerating.”

Hunter agrees that maintenance of all products should start with a visual inspection by checking for things like clogged cylinder fins, broken components, cracks or leaks.

“Any products with cutting equipment require regular inspection of the blades, bars, spur sprockets or chain,” Hunter says. “Sharpen or replace any parts that are dull if needed. Additionally, routine maintenance should include checking the safety function of chain brakes.”

Rental company owners should inspect the muffler screen arrestor and make sure it’s not clogged, ensure that sparks

don’t fly from the muffler and see to it that product switches and functions are working, Hunter says.

CLEAN EQUIPMENT

Once equipment has been inspected, rental companies should

clean it before renting it out.

“An engine fails due to overheating, lack of lubrication or dirt ingestion,” says Jeff Taylor, manager, product services, Stihl. “Dirt ingestion is due to an improperly maintained air filter, and overheating is due to not cleaning the unit regularly. As landscapers cut grass or are using a chainsaw, there’s sawdust or debris that gets packed around the cylinder of the engine, and that debris doesn’t allow the engine to cool properly.”

PERFORM PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

During the season and when equipment is not rented out, rental companies should perform regular service maintenance items such as

changing air filters, fuel filters, spark plugs and adding grease to bevel gear head or hedge trimmer gear cases, if applicable, Hunter says.

What’s more, rental companies can use systems to keep track of that maintenance, whether that’s through pen a paper, a whiteboard or software.

For trimmers, Taylor adds that rental companies can also inspect and clean trimmer lines to save on downtime throughout the season.

LUBRICATE EQUIPMENT

Wilk suggests making sure there’s grease in the gear case, that drive cables are lubricated and that equipment is generally tuned up with fresh filters. Make sure screens aren’t plugged up and that fuel lines are clean as well— they shouldn’t be brittle or gummy, as this can cause fuel line failure, Lovell says.

“On a two-cycle engine, lubrication is in the fuel mix, so it’s important to get proper fuel flow,” Taylor says.

It’s also important that rental companies

don’t forget to inspect and lubricate the gear box located at the cutting attachment.

“That’s an item that’s often overlooked,” Taylor says. “Remove the grease plug, inspect it and add grease if necessary in the gear box.”

BATTERY MAINTENANCE

While battery-powered equipment requires less maintenance in general, it’s important to make sure it’s stored in a warm, dry place.

“If you’re looking to maximize the life of the battery, care and storage is most important,” Taylor says. “Keep them stored in an area that’s dry and away from extreme temperatures. The 50- to 70-degree F range works well, but main thing is don’t store it below freezing or above 100 degrees F.”

Rental companies can clean the batteries and battery compartment with a dry cloth as moisture can add to corrosion issues.

Additionally, some battery products have an air filter, so it’s important to clean those, first ensuring the battery is removed to avoid accidental startups. Then, rental companies should wash it, air dry it and reinstall it.

MORE POWER TO YOU: The Rundown on Generator and Compressor Trends

Generator and compressor manufacturers lay out the trends rental companies should keep top of mind.

The expression “more power to you” is not usually meant in the literal sense but rather to encourage someone or show approval of their actions.

However, in this case, it’s meant in the literal sense of more power to the end user.

Generator and compressor manufacturers explain how rental companies—and their end customers—can get the most out of their power-generating equipment.

SIZE IT UP

When helping customers decide on a compressor, rental companies should ask as many questions as possible to find out what application the equipment is being used for, what kind of work the customer is doing, what type of tools they’re using, the number of tools they’re using, etc., according to Chance Chartters, sales manager, Mobileair portable air compressors, Kaeser.

“You want to find out the items about the job or the application that will be helpful in making sure they get the right size compressor for their job,” Chartters says. “The best thing is to know who their customers are and what

their typical customers rent when they come in to rent a compressor and what they’re using it for. The rental house should know what tools their customers are running along with the air compressor and what flows are required for the tools they rent.”

Rental companies should ask a similar series of questions of their customers when they come in to rent a generator.

“The most common way to get an accurate sizing is to list all the equipment that you really want to power and the energy requirement for each piece of equipment, and then size your generator in accordance with that,” says Tim Doling, global director of innovation and development at POWR2.

However, he notes that there are certain variables that are difficult to predict.

“You may have a whole list of equipment, but you don’t know if it’s all going to be turned on at the same time or what equipment is going to be used when, so you really have to size it based on the worst-case scenario, which is to say that first thing in the morning, crews get to the jobsite, and they switch everything on all at once,” Doling says. “There’s going to be a massive spike in demand, and you have to size the generator

SECTOR REPORT: POWER EQUIPMENT // 34 MARCH 2023 www.ForConstructionPros.com/ RENTAL
BY SARAH WEBB
POWR2

based on that spike in demand.”

If generators are not sized appropriately, they will not run efficiently, leading to service issues.

“When a generator is not running at its required load, it’s building up carbon particles on the exhaust, called wet stacking,” Doling says. “This can eventually lead to the generator actually failing. It’s more a service issue, but then there’s also the environmental fact that the generator is running inefficiently, and unless you put an artificial load on it to make it run at its peak efficiency, you’re actually just wasting energy there.”

RECENT TRENDS

To help contend with load and sizing issues, battery energy storage systems have come on the scene to create hybrid solutions.

“By putting a battery or an energy storage system in line with the generator, you only use the actual energy that’s required by the load, so generators can be switched off for long periods of time,” Doling says. “We just provide the power needed for that item, and then when the battery is depleted, we call for the generator to come on. So, we run the generator for a short period of time at peak efficiency rate and switch it back off again.”

In other words, Doling says that generators that are running 24 hours a day inefficiently could be running as little as three to four hours a day efficiently.

“The batteries can help smooth out the peaks and troughs and load, so the generator just runs when the peaks are required, and the battery can take up the periods of low load,” Doling says.

The battery systems typically consist of three basic components: batteries, inverters to convert the energy between Dc and Ac output into a usable form and a control system,

according to Aaron LaCroix, product manager at Generac.

LaCroix adds that the battery energy storage system is going to be connected to some type of charging source in the case of mobile power such as a diesel generator.

“Generators by themselves have the advantage of a long run time when they have a full tank of fuel, so depending on the load, you could run for days at a time, but with the battery energy storage system, you can easily power both low loads and variable loads while emitting zero sound and zero emissions,” LaCroix says. “Working together, they’re designed to run at optimum efficiency, so combining these technologies allows for even longer run times.”

LaCroix adds that other benefits include a reduction in both fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

“In the mobile air industry, we’ve really seen a shift to more sustainable solutions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” LaCroix says. “This technology can make a significant impact on companies that have targets to reduce their emissions.”

Hydrogen generators also make up a portion of the new technology in the generator space.

“It’s very clean burning and plentiful, but there are some challenges about how to transport it and safely bring it to jobsites,” Doling says. “However, the desire for clean solutions means that hydrogen is being looked at seriously, in addition to other gaseous fuels.”

WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND

As with any piece of equipment, rental companies should ensure everything is operating properly on generators and air compressors before renting them out to customers.

For compressors, rental houses

should also check the hoses attached.

“It’s called a whip check, and it is a little cable that goes between the connection of the air compressor and on the hose itself,” Chartters says. “So, if for some reason, the hose does become uncoupled with the air compressor, it keeps it from whipping around. When you connect it to the air compressor, there’s a safety pin that keeps the claw coupling from coming out as well. So, make sure those safety pins are used.”

When it comes to battery-powered equipment, rental customers should reiterate to their customers that battery solutions produce power silently.

“Because people have years of experience running diesel generators and other engine-powered equipment, they are used to something making noise when it’s producing power,” Doling says. “We have to reinforce that all the time because it could be a potential safety risk if someone is not aware the equipment is running.”

The maximum digging depth is 13 feet 1 inch, the maximum digging reach is 23 feet 5 inches, and the maximum dumping height is 16 feet 4 inches.

Customized Kubota engine delivers 74.2 horsepower and 195 lb.- ft. of torque at 1,500 rpm, which makes the customers achieve higher performance in a mini design.

There are three working modes in XE80U: N(normal), P(power), and T(turbo) for adapting to different work conditions. In particular, the design of the T model has solved the needs of some customers to use excavators in highaltitude areas.

Different from the energy-saving modes designed separately by other brands, the XE80U can realize the economical mode by adjusting the gears in all three existing modes. When the XE80U is in gears 3 to 4, the small leaves representing the energy-saving mode will light up on the

multi-function display in the cab.

Many major components have been fully new-designed for improved durability and performance. The reinforced boom and arm can withstand heavy loads and harsh breaking operations. Its standard 0.46 yd³ bucket is equipped with more volume of wear-resistant plates to increase more than 10% life cycles.

The standard ROPS/optional OPG cabin maximizes your safety. Features with a suspension seat, adjustable armrests, storage compartments, and one powerful AC help keep you working comfortably all day long. And the color LCD display with comprehensive machine information, along with ergonomically designed control layouts and roller switch makes your jobs easier. The menu screen facilitates the reading of important information including working mode, maintenance intervals, fuel consumption, and hydraulic flowrate modes of attachments.

The XCMG XE80U comes with every feature you expect from a small excavator in its tonnage.

 Volvo L20 and L25 Electric

Volvo Construction Equipment has upgraded its zero-emissions, low-noise L20 and L25 Electric compact wheel loaders by increasing the maximum speed to 12.4 mph, adding the option to fit a parallel linkage that delivers high breakout torque in various applications and improving charging. Operators in colder climates will appreciate the new programmable cab heater option, which allows them to easily choose the times and days of the week when they would like to arrive in a prewarmed and defrosted cab. Operator comfort is also upgraded thanks to a more ergonomic joystick with the latest design on the market. A new electric parking brake supports uptime with hill-hold functionality: a convenient automatic feature for operators working on inclines or rough terrain. And, because the disc brake in the former model is now replaced by a spring-applied and hydraulic-released wetdisc brake, related maintenance requirements are removed. The time it takes to achieve a full charge from zero is only six hours with the 6-kW on-board charger if used with a 240V socket or level 2 public charging station. Speedier charging is available with optional offboard DC fast chargers at 11.5 kW or 17.3 kW.

 Felling Trailers R Series

The Felling Trailers’ Utility Cable Reel “R” series model lines have been modified to increase operator safety and ease of use. An update to the model design is the auto-locking reel bar system. The auto-locking reel bar system eliminates the use of pins and brackets; it now utilizes a locking plate system. The R series product line offers payload capacities ranging from 1,740 pounds to 13,520 pounds. All models have the capability to load up to a 120-inch-diameter reel. The auto-locking reel bar system's locking plates automatically open when lowering the reel to the ground for unloading. As the reel is loaded and raised, the locking plates automatically close to contain the reel bar. Once the reel is raised to transport position, spring-loaded pins automatically lock the slides into place. When the pins lock, they provide visual validation to the operator that the reel is properly locked for transport. A green marker on the spring-loaded pins is only visible when the reel bar is properly secured. The green indicators can be viewed from the rearview mirrors of the tow vehicle, making transporting conduit, fiber optic cable, inner duct and many other reel-mounted materials a safe and secure experience for operators.

MARCH 2023 39 www.ForConstructionPros.com/ RENTAL

ANDREW HEESACKER of Arvada Rent-Alls

Rental: How did you get your start in the industry?

Andrew Heesacker: My father has been the owner of Arvada Rent-Alls since 1986, so technically, I was born into the equipment rental industry. I got my first job at 14 years old and worked at several places growing up and into college. I attended the University of Northern Colorado, and upon graduating in 2007, I got hired on at Neff Rental (now United), which is how I got my “official” start in rental.

Rental: Tell us about your current company.

Heesacker: I’ve been at Arvada Rent-Alls for 10 years and have instituted a lot of change. Prior to these changes, the revenue mix of Arvada Rent-Alls was about 60 percent homeowner, 35 percent contractor and 5 percent event and party. We’re now about 65 percent contractor and 35 percent homeowner. We’ve added a multitude of new Cat classes that contractors rent. We’ve put a lot of time into crafting a locally owned company that operates and competes with national equipment companies. We also have a redesigned website and implemented Traction EOS. We pride ourselves on having a culture that people want to work in.

Rental: What have been some of the challenges and successes you’ve encountered?

Heesacker: We learned some hard lessons when we first

brought in larger equipment. Having a properly skilled service team, a properly trained sales team and appropriately sized vehicles are all challenges we’ve faced (and overcome). Also, COVID was a difficult time period. There were times when we had no idea what the next month or two would bring for the business.

Rental: What's the best piece of business advice you've ever received? What’s your best advice?

Heesacker: I have a few pieces of advice I’ve received from people I consider to be mentors and friends. “Learn to manage without being someone’s boss.” While I am now technically “the boss,” this quote really made me think about the subject of leadership. I also like “Stay patient and let situations resolve themselves without always jumping in at the first sign of difficulty.” Some advice for others is to get an operating system. Also, your employees appreciate transparency and clarity when it comes to the direction the company is headed, in addition to feedback on a regular basis. Be empathetic and actively listening to what people are saying at all levels of leadership.

Rental: What are three big trends you predict for the industry this year?

Heesacker: I think 2023 is going to start strong, with the pent-up demand from the last few years of uncertainty. I believe there will be a slowdown later in the year, going into 2024, but it will be short-lived. I also think that supply chain issues will temper, and we’ll get closer to having shorter lead times and no surcharges from manufacturers.

implement a more effective safety program.

There are so many facets to consider in the rental business, including the vast array of rental equipment, customer safety, staff safety, delivery vehicle safety, safety involved with your facility and other safety considerations, but safety is well worth the effort.

How to keep your company HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS

In addition to lightning-fast advancements in technology, our society is changing at a dizzying pace. As a result, it’s more important than ever for equipment rental companies to take a good look at the state of their own company and adjust their focus and strategies now.

It is vital to pay close attention to changes in their local business environment, their customers’ needs and what portions of their business are in need of expansion, deemphasis or elimination.

The uncertainties relating to the economic slowdown and possible recession later this year are creating potentially huge opportunities for equipment rental companies. (See my column in the January/February 2022 issue of Rental.)

The equipment rental industry is still in very good shape. So far, the economy has helped propel the need for rental equipment to record-breaking new heights. Considering the labor crisis, inflation, our economy’s slowdown engineered by the Federal Reserve (through interest rate hikes)

and geopolitical saber-rattling on many fronts, our industry’s resiliency has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Many rental companies feel that their business growth and profitability have been restricted by not being able to find enough employees. Hopeful signs in 2023 for lessening the labor shortage include the end of financial incentives for people to stay home and not work, less economic stimulus being pumped into the economy and a slowdown in the economy. The labor shortage highlights the importance of having effective employee training and retention programs in 2023.

Another thing to do going into 2023 is to be certain that your rental rates and other charges have be comprehensively reviewed and adjusted. Refer to my column in the October/ November 2022 issue.

Another thing to do is to

Equipment rental company owners and managers are often busy taking care of the day-to-day running of their companies, so it is very difficult to devote the time to develop a comprehensive safety program, but there needs to be a beginning to this very worthwhile project.

Here are a few additional considerations for a safety program:

■ Relevant safety messages should be presented briefly every day. These “safety huddles” could take place near the start of each day and be less than a minute or two.

■ Get employees involved. It is more likely that employees will be more committed to safety if they have a role in developing some of your safety program.

■ Every meeting that the company has should contain a safety message component.

■ Document safety meetings and other safety investments as this demonstrates that you are serious about safety and safe practices.

■ There are plenty of resources for safety materials.

One of the keys to success is to make a firm commitment to continue doing it. You want your staff to embrace the continuity of doing their work safely time after time. Develop the same habit in presenting your safety messages without the same excuses some of your employees might use for not performing their work safely.
