Readers point out our error in measurement, highlighting the need for vigilant instruction for DIYers... as well as an apology to our cold patch asphalt manufacturer ith every issue, it’s our goal to get our readers’ attention. And even though our subject matter isn’t as sensational as Sports Illustrated or Time, we try our best to come up with editorial that resonates with our audience. One feature seems to garner more feedback than any other and that is our annual Renters’ Review. Our most recent installment, featured in our recent June/July issue, told the story of my driveway repair project and the effort to resurface it using a cut-off saw, some cold patch asphalt, and a plate compactor. As always, it was an odyssey of DIY lessons. One of the most noteworthy aspects of this project was the unexpected quantity of cold patch needed to fill the roughly 4- by 8-ft. by 3 in. hole we cut in my driveway. Long story short, we needed a whole lot more cold patch than we thought. We had decided to use a premium new product, Aqualphalt, because Consumer Reports had rated it so highly. The package said (we thought) one bucket would cover a 5- by 5-ft. area to a 1-in. depth. This was so far off what we believed it was supposed to cover that we called the company out in a short sidebar article. It wasn’t long before the letters started coming in, correcting our measurement error. It turns out we were

figuring for area, not volume, and in fact, Aquaphalt was correct in its claims. (For a great explanation of our error, see the letters to the editor on page 8 of this issue). We regret this error and apologize to Aquaphalt for the bad press. As stated in our last issue, there’s no question over the performance of this product. It provides high-quality results and does what it says it will do. Do not hesitate to give it a try. That being said, the area/volume question could trip up many DIYers, and this is yet one more lesson to take away from Renters’ Review. We hope you can learn from our mistakes and help your customers make better choices going forward. Meanwhile, we love the feedback. Keep it coming! ■

Driveway repair project gets more involved than expected, but friendly expert advice ensures an acceptable end result

or this year’s Renters’ Review, I decided to investigate repairing my old and very uneven asphalt driveway. It has numerous depressions and “birdbaths,” as they say in the business, with the worst concentration located close to the entrance to my garage, where an accumulation of snow and rain in the winter months contributes to a good size ice skating rink, making a trip to take out the garbage risky business.

u “Assisting” with this project was family friend Josh Rutherford, 20. By assist, I mean he basically did everything. Many of the tasks involved were simply outside my physical capabilities.

RPN0618_20-39_RentersReview_JAL.indd 20

TO THE EDITOR: I just read your article regarding the use of cold patch to repair your driveway. I think you are definitely giving the cold patch company a bad rap. You wrote in the article that you purchased four buckets of cold patch, each of which would cover 5 sq. ft. to a depth of 1 in. (This does NOT mean it will cover an area measuring 5 by 5 ft. to a depth of 1 in. – that is 25 square feet!) Pretty clearly, the hole you dug was much bigger that that – I’d guess maybe 3 ½ by 6 ft. This is an area of 21 square feet. Cover this to a depth of 3 inches would require about 9,000 cu. in. of material (volume). Each bucket you bought contained 720 cu. in., per the 5 sq. ft. to a 1-in. depth claim. Based on this, it should have taken you about 12.5 buckets of this material to fill this hole, which is about what you used. This is a very common mistake and is why your friend at ACE should have asked you the size of hole you were making, and saved you from the shock of not buying enough material. It’s very common to confuse area and volume measurements, if you don’t work with them frequently. When I order aggregate or other volumebased material, whoever I call is very careful to ask repeatedly if I’m calculating my needs correctly. I think an apology and written correction is in order to Aquaphalt. Their coverage claim is likely very much correct and you added a short article at the end of the main one denigrating their product. The customer (you) simply didn’t understand the basic math required to buy the correct amount.

point of reference. As expected, I was told they aren’t open on weekends and when I explained the project I was doing and asked if renting a plate compactor made sense, I was given a noncommittal answer and the statement, “I’ve personally never worked with asphalt, so I don’t really know.” Next, I called a company I’d never heard of. Its website was somewhat uninspiring, but informative enough, and I could see they had a plate comReassuring rental pro pactor in their inventory. So I called I Googled “equipment rental” in and spoke to a fast-talking gentlemy area and came up with a good list man who listened as I told him about to work from. As is usual and cusmy project and then gave me his two tomary for Renters’ Review projects, cents. He said doing an overlay might I contacted a national chain first, as a work okay, but that I should be sure to clean the area thoroughly before patching and that x To begin the driveway repair project, the outcome might benewe rented a plate compactor and cut fit from adding sub base off saw, and purchased four buckets of in the deepest spots to premium cold patch asphalt. One aspect of this company that gave me pause was that I couldn’t find an address on the website. The city was noted, but that was all. When I asked the gentleman I spoke to where

I imagined the depressions in this spot, contained within a roughly 8by 4-foot area, would be easy enough to fill with cold patch asphalt, and in researching how to tackle the project, I stumbled upon some YouTube videos of people doing just that. And it looked easy! The next step was finding a new rental source that had a plate compactor available.

TO THE EDITOR: I enjoyed the recent article about patching your asphalt driveway. I think your material calculations were off on Aquaphalt, as it covers 5 sq. ft.1 in. deep, not 5 by 5 ft. (25 sq. ft.) at 1 in. deep. I noticed both figures referenced in the article. Keep up the great articles. I think Renters’ Review helps rental stores see themselves with a fresh set of eyes.

—DOUGLAS ATTEMA, ATTEMA SALES, LLC

TO THE EDITOR: Just read your article about the DIY asphalt project. It was a nice read from a different perspective. Just an FYI on the math… 4 ft. by 8 ft. = 32 sq. ft. multiplied by 3 in. = 96 sq. ft. If each Aquaphalt [bucket] covers 5 sq. ft. at 1 in., that would be 19.2 buckets to fill in your area. In the middle of the article you said it covers a 5-ft. by 5-ft. area, which is 25 sq. ft., not 5 sq. ft., which the bucket claims. Just my two cents because you included the [sidebar] about coverage.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

EDITOR’S NOTE:

ollowing are letters we received in response to the Renters Review 2018 “Beware the ‘YouTube Effect’ F — A Cautionary Tale” in the June/July 2018 issue. Letters have been edited for space and clarity.

DON’T PROMOTE FLY-BY-NIGHT RENTAL OUTFITS TO THE EDITOR: I am the manager of Pioneer Rentals in Chatham, NJ. I always enjoy reading the “Renters’ Review” article in Rental magazine and this year was no exception. I try to take away from the article what perhaps we can do differently or expand upon to make our customers’ experience better. This article again did as I hoped. I enjoyed the “Youtube effect” idea and in hindsight, have seen it here at the store. The reason for my email is because I am a little surprised that you used a “rental house” out of a storage facility. I find that rather insulting. Maybe I do not know all the particulars of the “rental house” (I use the term very loosely), but my company has been in business for over 45 years and we carry all the required insurance needed for this business, pay taxes and employ people with knowledge and expertise in most fields with a total of 170 years combined experience. I can’t believe that some guy who rents stuff out of his storage unit does so. I am also insulted because in this day and age with social media and people borrowing items from each other on Facebook town groups at cut rates, not to mention fly-by-night rental places on Craigslist, that you and the magazine would actually use and recommend to others such a company that is out there just undercutting the rental houses in the area that operate by the book and stand by their equipment. I will continue, as always, to look forward to reading the articles in Rental magazine. I am just surprised by the usage of equipment from such a source, with recommendation, and wanted to express my feelings to you on this matter.

— KEITH NITKA, MANAGER, PIONEER RENTALS INC.

EDITOR: I was also concerned when I learned the business operates out of a storage facility. The company’s website, however, is professional and clearly states the business is a member of the American Rental Association. With that in mind, I decided to give it a chance. Upon visiting the location, I was amazed at how professional it is. Customers need to make an appointment in order to gain access to the storage unit. The owner meets customers at the gate and drives them back to his unit. He’s been in business for over 20 years, has a professional business card, brochure, trucks with logos, etc. I don’t know about his insurance, etc., but my overall experience with this company was that it came off as very professional, more so than some I’ve visited on much larger properties. All this aside, one goal with Renters’ Review is to visit all different types of rental businesses – big, small, chain, independent, hardware store rental department – you name it. We certainly wouldn’t aim to legitimize any fly-by-night operations with poor business practices, but if a Google search brings up a company, this is how your customers are honestly experiencing their search for a solution. It’s worth it for us to investigate all facets of the industry, good and bad, if only to bring to light the less-than-perfect parts.

— JENNY LESCOHIER, RENTAL EDITOR

ENJOYED READING RENTERS’ REVIEW TO THE EDITOR: Just read your article on the “YouTube effect.” I enjoyed it. It was funny and very visual. I can easily see everything you went through and can sympathize with trying to do that type of DIY project. I know from trying to move equipment around on trade show floors how tough that is for anyone. I really miss the trade shows and seeing all the great people that were and are part of this industry. I really appreciate getting ForConstructionPros.com newsletters so I can see what’s going on. Keep up the good work.

KATHY REISSIG, ACCOUNTING & — MARKETING MANAGER, VELMEX INC. (FORMERLY WITH STONE CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT)

TO THE EDITOR: What an undertaking to make the asphalt repairs to your driveway! It was a very interesting story and I really appreciated your takeaways from the experience, especially from a DIY perspective. No matter what the DIY “craft” is, from home remodeling to repairs and even crafting and building furniture, it’s never as easy and seamless as the YouTube videos make it to be. Thanks for sharing! A great article and perspective. I hope you’re enjoying your newly repaired driveway!

JEAN HILLER, SENIOR PUBLIC — RELATIONS SUPERVISOR, TWO RIVERS MARKETING

EDITOR: Thanks everyone for reading. Renters’ Review is always an intense learning experience and we look forward to many more of them.

MANAGER’S DIGEST

EPA IS NOW ALLOWING ASBESTOS BACK INTO CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

EPA Announces Largest Voluntary Recall of Medium- & Heavy-Duty Trucks

One of the most dangerous construction-related carcinogens is now allowed back into U.S. manufacturing under a new rule by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). On June 1, EPA authorized a “SNUR” (Significant New Use Rule) which maintains existing bans on asbestos uses, but allows new products containing asbestos to be created on a case-by-case basis. In May, the EPA released a report detailing its new framework for evaluating the risk of its top prioritized substances. The report states that the agency will no longer consider the effect or presence of substances in the air, ground, or water in its risk assessments. Newsweek.com reports the EPA said the proposal would affect a wide range of uses of asbestos related to manufacturing that the EPA has identified as “no longer ongoing.” Such “new” uses would include “adhesive, sealants and roof and non-roof coatings; arc chutes; beater-add gaskets; extruded sealant tape and other tape; filler for acetylene cylinders; high-grade electrical paper; millboard; missile liner; pipeline wrap; reinforced plastics; roofing felt; separators in fuel cells and batteries; vinyl-asbestos floor type and any other building material (other than cement,)” according to the EPA. Asbestos-related deaths now total nearly 40,000 annually, with lung cancer and mesothelioma being the most common illnesses in association with the toxin. Newsweek suggests President Donald Trump’s personal stance on asbestos may have influenced his administration’s decision. “I believe that the movement against asbestos was led by the mob, because it was often mob-related companies that would do the asbestos removal,” Trump wrote in his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback. “Great pressure was put on politicians, and as usual, the politicians relented.” As EPA eases regulations against using harmful toxins like asbestos, the responsibility to protect peoples’ health falls to local and state governments, and to the companies and consumers themselves.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that Cummins Inc. will voluntarily recall roughly 500,000 model year 20102015 medium- and heavy-duty trucks. The recall will replace a faulty emissions control systems component that causes excess emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). This recall is the largest voluntary truck emissions recall to date. The problem Cummins is acting to correct is the result of a defective part and does not involve a defeat device.

To learn more, visit www.forconstructionpros.com/21016919.

“[This] recall is a great example of how government and industry work together to protect health and the environment.” said EPA Office of Air and Radiation Assistant Administrator Bill Wehrum. “This is the way it’s supposed to work. Our followup testing seeks to make sure that pollution controls work throughout an engine’s useful life. And, if they don’t, then companies step up to set things right.” The trucks being recalled are equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems designed to control NOx emissions. NOx is a potent air pollutant that contributes to smog and fine particle formation in the atmosphere. The SCR catalysts that will be replaced through the recall were found to be less durable than is required, degrading within a few years instead of controlling NOx pollution for the regulatory full useful life of the vehicle. The recall will replace these SCR system components. Medium- and heavy-duty categories include vehicles ranging from larger pickup trucks to vocational vehicles to big rigs.

CONSTRUCTCONNECT:

TOTAL US CONSTRUCTION STARTS FOR 2018 PREDICTED TO BE DOWN -0.2% ConstructConnect, a leading provider of construction information and technology solutions in North America, announced the release of its Fall 2018 Forecast and Quarterly Report. The forecast revealed minor revisions to its total construction starts from what was

originally estimated last quarter. Total starts for 2018 over 2017 are now expected to be -0.2%, down slightly from the 0.4% figure previously calculated. Single-family homebuilding will provide the major momentum this year and for the next several years. Multifamily

residential groundbreakings will ease back in 2018, before resuming upward movement in 2019. The forecast suggested 2019 total starts will rebound to 7.8% year over year, faster than the 7.1% previously expected. Beyond 2019, the annual growth rate of total starts will settle down into a range of 4.5% to 5% out to 2022. After a one-third increase in the 2017 starts, multifamily residential groundbreakings will ease back in 2018, before resuming upward movement in 2019 and beyond. Single-family homebuilding will provide the major momentum this year and for the next several years. The demographics for single-family housing are encouraging, as family formations among millennials are spurring the desire for living space that transcends rental accommodation.

“The incentives to carry out capital spending at this time include numerous positive indicators: strong GDP growth accompanied by exceptional jobs creation and an almost record-low unemployment rate; a big cut in the tax rate and a bonus depreciation rate that are lifting corporate profitability; and a pervasive shift to rosier consumer and business confidence,” explained ConstructConnect’s Chief Economist Alex Carrick.

• Millennials, the biggest population cohort in the US, are entering the housing market – both for purchases and for rentals – in powerful and increasing numbers • Consolidation within the homebuilding industry continues briskly, with homebuilders finding it cheaper and quicker to enter new markets, and easier to go much deeper in existing markets, by buying competitors rather than “green fielding”

• Credit metrics continue to improve for much of the homebuilding industry, with debt leverage gradually being reduced, interest coverage strengthening, and gross margins slowing and even stopping their recent declines “We view the homebuilding industry as still having significant further room for consolidation,” said Natalia Gluschuk, Moody’s assistant vice president. “We believe acquisitions will be selective and well-spaced out, and expect public-to-public large transformational purchases to continue as builders compete for market share, while publicto-private purchases will extend reach into new and existing markets.” To learn more, visit www.forconstructionpros. com/21015854

IHS MARKIT

LITTLE RELIEF IN SIGHT FOR STEEL PRICES

Construction costs increased for the 21st straight month in July, according to IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO) and the Procurement Executives Group (PEG). The current headline IHS Markit PEG Engineering and Construction Cost Index registered 68.0, 1.4 points higher than in June. Both materials/equipment and labor sub-indexes came in above 50, indicating rising prices. Price increases for materials and equipment were stronger across the board in July; the index posted a gain of 0.4 points, reaching 69.5. The indexes were higher in eight of the 12 categories, though all 12 were above the neutral threshold of 50. The indexes fell for copper-based wire, heat exchangers and ocean freight. The biggest gains were in the indexes for concrete, transformers and pumps and compressors while the steel index had the highest reading. “Steel prices in the U.S. are at or near peak levels. What little relief is on the way will come later this year,” said John Anton, director, pricing and purchasing, IHS Markit. “Pipe and tube

prices have not peaked, but will climb through the rest of the year. If you buy from Brazil, Argentina or South Korea, you may need to find additional suppliers; supply shortages are ongoing in rebar, angles, pipe, and tube.” The current subcontractor labor index expanded at a faster rate this month compared to last; the index increased 3.7 points to 64.4, marking the 12th straight month of increasing prices. Labor costs continued to increase in all U.S. regions, with the Northeast experiencing the biggest rise in the index. The six-month headline expectations for construction costs index increased for the 23rd consecutive month; the index moved up 3.3 points to 78.0, the highest level recorded in the nearly six-year life of this survey. The materials/equipment index rose 3.0 points higher to 79.9. Expectations for future price increases were widespread. Price expectations for sub-contractor labor increased 4.0 points, coming in at 73.6. Labor costs are expected to rise in all regions of the U.S. and Canada.

MARKET WATCH By Rod Dickens, contributing editor

HOW DO YOU APPROACH SAFETY? Rental businesses from around the country share their philosophies regarding this important topic

OREGON: EQUIPMENT AND PARTY SALES BOTH LOOKING UP Power Pac & Party Time Enterprises in Klamath Falls, OR has two stores, an equipment rental store and a party store, on the same site. Both, according to company vice president Jeff Mauch, have experienced a vast improvement in sales over the last couple years. “Our party store is seasonal,” said Mauch. “Right now, it’s graduation season and the store’s very busy. Not to say our heavy equipment rental is lagging far behind. There’s been a definite increase in commercial construction,

including an uptick in renting aerials and reach forklifts. In fact, we’re currently in the market to add more reach equipment to our inventory. Mauch is safety coordinator for aerials. He noted the company offers customers certification courses on aerial equipment, something that has become more convenient for them thanks to online courses. The handson part of the certification is still completed at the store. “All our employees are also certified to operate this equipment,” Mauch added, “and we hold company-wide

“WE HOLD COMPANY-WIDE SAFETY MEETINGS THE THIRD FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH.” THIS, HE ADMITTED, TAKES A SPECIAL COMMITMENT SINCE TIME IS AT A PREMIUM DURING THE BUSY SEASON.” 20

safety meetings the third Friday of every month.” This, he admitted, takes a special commitment since time is at a premium during the busy season.” Power Pac & Party Time has 12 full-time and two part-time employees, some of whom are cross-trained to work in both sides of the business.

UTAH: MOUNTAIN WEST LOOKING GOOD “The Utah and surrounding markets are strong and the long-term forecast is very positive,” said Mark Christison, general manager for Western States Equipment Company. Located in Salt Lake City, the company has been in business since 1995 and offers a wide range of rental products, including both large equipment and small tools, to commercial and industrial clients. “The commercial construction sector is at a frenzy pace, with the new airport and prison consuming a lot

of inventory,” he added. “The industrial sector is making a nice come back, as well, after a couple years of flat activity, but is still not where it was pre-crude oil crisis. All told, the mountain west region rental activity is healthy and the future is bright.” Christison emphasized that Western States Equipment is committed to safety. “We have an extensive pre-employment safety training program as well as monthly safety meetings to discuss current safety issues. We also provide customers with operator training and certification on every class of machines we offer. “Our drivers and field techs are all required to be MSHA and OSHA trained. Our safety motto is: Don’t make the 5:00 news.”

FLORIDA: PUTTING DUST ON NOTICE Park’s Rental and Sales, headquartered in Fort Pierce, FL, recently bolstered its lineup of dustless floor breakers, floor prep equipment, and masonry handheld tools. The move this year, which brought on Hilti dust removal systems and dustless vacs, gives customers even more options for minimizing their exposure to silica dust. “The fact that Silica dust is harmful is gaining more awareness around here,” explained Operations Manager Sean Thomas. “We see trucks driving by, advertising their company’s ability to perform dustless jobs, something we didn’t see a few years ago. The new vacs and systems not only help contain dust to benefit operators, they also reduce cleanup for their customers.” As he pointed out, OSHA regs help drive this growing awareness, but they are not working alone. “Promoting a safe work environment for customers

22

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

RPN0818_20-25_MarketWatch_JAL.indd 22

is an important part of renting equipment. For example, we require operators be present when renting chain saws and other similar tools, so they receive a first-hand demonstration from us. For larger products, such as boom lifts and telehandlers, our delivery drivers are certified equipment operators who provide on-site demonstrations that emphasize safe operation.” Thomas, a 14-year veteran with the company, noted that safety sheets, manuals, and other documentation that go out the door with tools and equipment also impress on customers the need to operate their rentals in a safe manner. Park’s Rental caters to a broad customer base comprised of both homeowners and contractors. Its motto, “solutions for rent,” requires stores carry a wide variety of tools and equipment, everything from small hand-held drills to 60-foot aerial lifts. The company started in business in 1964 in Fort Pierce and has since added two satellite locations, one in Vero Beach and the other in Port St. Lucie. Business in all three locations is going well, driven by new construction to accommodate an upbeat housing market and demand for new restaurants, convenient stores, and gas stations, added Thomas.

“The area took quite a hit during the recession and sales are just now getting back to where they were prior to ’07. I was relatively new to the industry back then and didn’t have an idea the market could collapse like it did. Now I know it’s possible. Still, there’s no indication the market is slowing and we anticipate positive sales growth for the foreseeable future.”

RHODE ISLAND: “SAFETY IS PART OF OUR CULTURE” Construction Equipment Rentals Inc., in Johnston, RI, is a relatively new player in the industry. But it’s also a fast learner. After a slow start five years ago, the company has since made a major management change. “We essentially rebooted our approach to customers, to sales, and to our employees,” said general manager Mike Travis. “Part of that change, too, was how we approached the safety issue with both our employees and our customers. “Safety has now become a very important part of our culture. We begin every meeting with a stretching exercise and a discussion of a safety topic such as reviewing where we meet in case of an emergency or reminding employees to wear their harnesses when operating equipment and always coming to work with safety shoes, glasses, and so forth.

“EVEN THOUGH SAFETY STARTS WITH A COMMITMENT FROM THE TOP, WE GIVE ALL EMPLOYEES A CHANCE TO PRESENT WHAT THEY FEEL IS A SAFETY ISSUE, BECAUSE SAFETY CAN MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE.”

“Even though safety starts with a commitment from the top, we give all employees a chance to present what they feel is a safety issue, because safety can mean different things to different people.” For its customers, who primarily work in the commercial sector, Construction Equipment Rental takes a similar approach. “Our goal is to push education down to the operator,” added Travis. “We feel the industry has a social responsibility to ensure its workers are safe. We also tell customers that equipment operated in a safe manner lasts longer and performs better.” Education is the key, he reemphasized. “In addition to doing a walk around with customers to ensure they’re confident in operating an aerial work platform or another piece of equipment, we offer safety familiarization classes at our facility. In fact, today we have 15 customers attending a session. “One of our employees has also gone through a Terex/Genie “train the trainers” safety certification program and has since certified another employee, here. We offer this training to customers. It takes a 72-hour commitment from them, but they can do some of the training on-line, before the hands-on portion at our facility.” Travis notes that few competitors offer the level of safety training that Construction Equipment does. Even though it can provide a competitive advantage, he tells customers that going through the training doesn’t require a commitment to rent from the store. “No, again it’s about having social responsibility and doing the right thing,” he says.

Hot market The management change has paid off for this rental store. Travis terms the current market in the state a “hot,” one that is bolstered by new

construction, tax advantages associated with renting versus buying equipment, and growing safety awareness, e.g., replacing the use of ladders with safer alternatives. Construction Equipment recently opened a second location and would like to open another one in the not-to-distant future. It’s goal: To have 1,500 pieces of equipment in its inventory and customers who appreciate how important it is to operate them safely.

INDIANA: TAKING SAFETY TO A HIGHER LEVEL “Safety has always been a top priority for us,” relates Illini Hi-Reach CEO Larry Workman. “It begins when you deliver a piece of equipment. You do a walkaround with the customer, explain dos and don’ts, and determine how familiar the operator will be with the equipment.” But as he said, that’s just the beginning of safety training for this Crown Point, IN-based company. It also offers a four-hour ANSI, OSHA certification class with a classroom instructor, a video presentation, and actual handson training. Those who take the class are awarded a certificate, not unlike a driver’s license, that gives the date issued and product certification. “Six of our employees have gone through a week-long safety training program called ‘train the trainers’ at the JLG factory headquarters. They are certified to teach safety training

classes, either here, at one of our five locations throughout Indiana and Illinois, or onsite at customer facilities,” explains Workman. “We also hold monthly safety training with our employees, providing timely safety tips gleaned from our own experiences and from other industry sources, including trade magazines. Our new Crown Point facility also has a state-of-the art audio/visual training center.” Just last month, the company added another layer of safety when it hired a truck dispatcher, DOT trained in load specifications and safety. “Even though we’re just a regional player and not nearly as big as the national companies, we have more than 1,000 aerial lifts in our inventory and trucks spend a lot of time on the road,” added Workman. “Making sure they are well maintained and properly loaded is not only fundamental to their safe operation but helps ensure that pickups and deliveries are made on time.” In addition to renting aerial lifts to a wide variety of general contactors and subs, Illini Hi-Reach generates approximately 30 percent of its revenue from selling JLG equipment. The company employs more than 45 people and offers full service at all five locations. “We had a very good year last year, and our stores are doing well again,” said Workman. “New construction is currently driving most of our rental business, with markets in neighboring Indiana and Wisconsin showing the greatest activity.” ■

MEC Offers Proactive Platform Safety System (PPSS) for Slab Scissors MEC announces the introduction of the Proactive Platform Safety System (PPSS) for select slab scissor lifts. This innovative solution is designed to alert MEC scissor lift operators by proactively warning them of overhead hazards with the goal of collision and entrapment avoidance. • A “cone” of safety is projected to detect objects above the machine operator • Sensor will begin detecting obstacles 12 ft. above the platform floor • An alarm will sound when an object is identified within the cone, and the frequency of beeps will increase as the object gets closer • With a predetermined safe distance setting, the frequency of alarm beeps becomes constant and the machine stops lifting • Override button is available for deliberate closer positioning towards an object • Unique 45º orientation of the MEC lift control handle is designed so that forward/downward movement will cause the machine to lower if contact was made with an overhead obstacle www.forconstructionpros.com/21016732

DELIVERING PROVEN PERFORMANCE THROUGH SMART TECHNOLOGY You have big, important jobs to tackle, but you don’t have time to waste on equipment that doesn’t deliver reliability and advanced technology engineered to give you the edge. So, don’t just settle for a scissor that simply does the job. Choose from two JLG® scissor lines that do so much more. The premium ES Series and value R Series both deliver proven performance through smart technology that maximizes uptime in ways other scissor brands can’t. While most scissor lifts appear similar at first glance, look beyond the actual exterior and you will find technologies that truly differentiate a standard scissor from one that provides advanced technologies and features that deliver performance advantages on-the-job. Built for rugged reliability, the rental-ready R Series electric slab scissor lifts offer 19-ft and 40-ft models with up to 770 lb of platform capacity. Premium and efficient ES Series scissors are available in five models from 19 ft to 32 ft, with dual capacity on select models, which deliver up to 1,000 lb of platform capacity. R Series scissor lifts are perfect for rental thanks to serviceable components and durability-enhancing features like a simplified active pothole protection with fewer moving parts and only one limit switch. This is a value-priced line that includes the narrowest 40-ft scissor lift in its class, while featuring advancements like

variable tilt technology that increases the work envelope on slight slopes. ES Series scissor lifts offer up to double the battery life than comparable models thanks to their electric drive system. That— combined with faster travel speeds, improved gradeability and fewer leak points—makes these machines ideal for sensitive work and long shifts, while giving users the confidence that they’ll have enough power to load them onto the truck at the end of the day. Additional technologies on JLG® scissor lifts include: ■ Controlled elevation descent, which cushions the ride for the operator when the scissor comes to a stop on the way up, or just before it reaches the bottom on the way down. This is technology is included on both ES and R Series models. ■ Controlled drive descent allows for smooth descents, which protects machine components as customers traverse steep slopes. It is included on both ES and R Series models.

■ The 4045R, the narrowest machine in its size class, offers a zero-load calibration load sensing system (LSS). This pressure-based system includes functionality for a simple calibration, which can be performed in the field without the need for calibrated weights. As a bonus, the JLG® LSS is less sensitive to ambient temperatures, especially in cold applications. ■ Dual capacity is available on select ES Series models, providing customers and end users with the ability to take additional materials and tools to lower elevations up to the restricted capacity of the unit.

Practical Solutions for the

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS

T

he world is changing faster than ever before, affecting everything from from the ways we are entertained to our methods of doing business. Much of this evolution is advantageous, but some can cause growing pains we might like to do without. One thing’s for sure, the pace of change is unlikely to slow down, so it’s important to keep our eyes on the horizon and do our best to be proactive, rather than reactive. With that in mind, following are a collection of thoughts and insights from several experts representing various facets of the business world. We hope they’ll spark some ideas that will help rental businesses succeed now and into the future.

Key Factors That Will Affect Equipment Rental in 2018 & Beyond Even a small rental rate increase could push contractors to buy

A

s most would agree, the construction industry continues to fare well. Based on what we hear from our clients and data from our 42nd annual Wells Fargo Construction Industry Forecast, we expect to see this trend continue. Our forecast generates an Optimism Quotient (OQ) each year, which is a measurement of the industry’s expected activity for the year ahead. With the 2018 OQ at a 20-year high of 133, we can state with some conviction that the participants who spoke to us feel that 2018 is going to be a very good year. In today’s market, contractors have to make a significant investment in machinery and equipment, and acquiring equipment can be done in several ways. Common questions include: “Do I have enough work to justify buying it?” and “Should I just rent rather than make a long-term investment in the equipment?” Distributors also have to make decisions, including whether their focus will be more on sales or rentals (and is there a need for a dedicated rental fleet), and how much inventory is needed. These are difficult decisions when the economy is strong and the availability of new equipment is not as easy to get as when things are slower. It is definitely not an exact science and can keep a business owner up at night.

Expect more rental Our most recent forecast told us that 65% of distributors and rental companies expect to rent more equipment

32

to contractors than the prior year. // By Peter Of the contractors that we surveyed, Gregory, senior vice 33% expect to increase their rentpresident, al activity. One caveat that we learned Construction Group, Wells Fargo from the industry forecast, though, Equipment Finance shows that even a small increase in rental rates could push contractors to purchase the equipment rather than rent. This is something we have seen in the last few years as contractors are more bullish on owning equipment when they have a stronger backlog of jobs and more longterm confidence in their local economy – a trend we are seeing now in many areas. While equipment rental has been around for many decades, after the great recession this trend increased significantly due to a drop in equipment values, little work backlog, and a lack of confidence in the economy. Distributors who had previously utilized a rent-to-sell model, were now in a position where they needed to decide if they wanted to adjust their business model to include rent-to-rent with fewer sales occurring. For a distributor that does not have that experience, this can be scary as rental companies run their operations far differently from manufacturer-based distributors. Large investments in personnel, systems and inventory are required to adjust to this model, and some have been more successful than others in these endeavors. Contractors realized that they could get the equipment they needed at a reasonable cost, have greater flexibility (which includes the ability to return it at any time), little or no maintenance costs, and no long-term risk of ownership. This has effectively shifted the risk of ownership to

www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

8/14/18 11:32 AM

the distributors. Contractors have been able to get newer/ late model equipment to use on their jobs without having to buy it.

Bigger fleets Another key insight from our 2018 forecast is that 55% of our surveyed distributors and rental companies said they will increase the size of their rental fleets. This additional investment comes at a cost with equipment prices rising and interest rates continuing to go up. Many manufacturers have passed on the increased price of steel through invoice surcharges. At the same time, labor costs are rising due to a shortage of qualified technicians. In our conversations with manufacturers and distributors, we hear the delivery time for new orders is delayed as much as six months. This is due to several factors – record orders coming in, not having a large enough workforce, and not having enough space to increase production. Their suppliers are feeling similar pain and component availability is strained.

The Federal Reserve has continued to increase interest rates based on historically low unemployment and an economy that continues to hum along, with many forecasts projecting 2018 GDP to be anywhere from 3-5%. Our own Wells Fargo Securities forecast is for 2018 GDP growth to be approximately 3%. From late 2015, the Fed has increased its benchmark rate seven times, which then forces lenders to increase their lending rates to their customers. Add all of these factors together, and it increases the purchasing and carrying cost for each unit and can cut into margins very quickly.

What about rates? So that begs a question – can distributors and rental companies increase rental rates to cover these higher costs? Every CFO out there will see these increases and be reaching out to the sales side of the business, advising them of these higher costs and the need to recoup them in their rental rates. The sales side will then need to make a decision – do I keep the rates where they are or try to pass along the increase? Remember – our survey told us that even a small rate increase may push contractors to purchase rather than rent. And most contractors will utilize two or three sources for renting their equipment – they will likely call the guy down the street to see what his rate will be. As you can see, a tricky situation to be sure, and not for the faint of heart. ■

When Rental is Hot, So is the Competition

// By Garry Bartecki, managing member of GB Financial Services LLP

I

t’s all good news for the rental industry. The American Rental Association expects continued growth for the next five years, and its Rental Penetration Index continues to climb, indicating that the percentage of construction equipment on work sites is growing, which in turn means contractors are buying less equipment and turning over the cost of ownership to the rental companies. Rental company owners should be pleased because there are more rental opportunities available. On the

Practical Solutions for the

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS other hand, the favorable rental metrics are creating more equipment rental companies in your “territory.” Rental transactions and opportunities are growimg, generating growth in rental fleets owned by both rental companies as well as equipment dealers. Continued growth in rental and the related rental fleets means one thing in terms of planning for the balance of 2018 and beyond: more competition. And more competition means: ■■ More sales personnel calling on your existing customers ■■ More rental sources for customers to call, including the “digital middleman” who fills customer needs by contacting local rental companies ■■ Potential loss of key personnel… sales, techs and drivers ■■ Additional marketing and sales expenses ■■ Volatile rental rates as newcomers try to penetrate the market ■■ Pressure on profitability and cash flow ■■ Problems meeting bank covenants There is no question… as the rental industry heats up, so does the competition and the problems that go along with increased competition.

equipment available it is found money, which you should probably take advantage of. In fact, you may want to contact these vendors to get added to their “select provider list.” In the end, some rental companies will get hurt by the digital crowd and others might come out ahead. Do yourself a favor and learn what you can about the digital rental companies and see if you can sign up as a provider. Equipment dealers provide both short- and long-term rentals. New competition in their territory is sure to put pressure on rental profits and fleet ROI. Dealers might find they need to reduce the number of units in their fleets to maintain a reasonable ROI. Reducing the rental fleet could come at a cost if the used equipment markets get flooded with used rental units. So, in order to keep control of both their balance sheets and income statements they might reduce future equipment purchases which won’t sit well with their OEMs. But with “rental” being a small part of their sales mix, they do have other profit silos to work with to make up for rental losses.

CONTINUED GROWTH IN RENTAL AND THE RELATED RENTAL FLEETS MEANS ONE THING IN TERMS OF PLANNING FOR THE BALANCE OF 2018 AND BEYOND: MORE COMPETITION.

Not your father’s competition The competition basically comes from a few sources: ■■ Equipment dealers ■■ Pure rental companies ■■ Digital rental transaction brokers ■■ Digital contractor-to-contractor rental brokers A lot of you are likely thinking, “Where did all this competition come from?” and “Are there really people out there making money brokering rental transactions?” All I can say is when the industry is hot, the players in every market will increase, meaning existing players have to mitigate new market rates which could lead to lower Rental Gross Profit margins and thus, lower overall net profits and cash flow. The digital players are basically providing the equipment provider with a re-rent transaction. If you have

34

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

RPN0818_32-53_BizSurvivalGuide_JAL.indd 34

Limit your exposure

So now we get down to the pure rental companies who have the greatest exposure to new competition because rental is their primary source of profits and cash flow. Pure rental companies that find volatile rates are reducing rental revenues to levels lower than expected have to take steps to get rental costs to levels that bring rental GP% back to where it belongs. But for rental companies, this is easier said than done. Rental cost of sales is primarily made up of tech payroll, road tech payroll, truck driver payroll and parts used for maintenance of both rental assets as well as delivery vehicles. These are tough costs to control if you have multiple locations but it’s even a problem for single-location rental stores if there is little or no accountability associated with the work performed. Equipment dealers do not have this problem because they have formal parts and service profit silos who provide services to the rental department. Parts and service work is usually provided to the rental department using a “best customer” rate and is billed in the normal course of business. Using this process, the rental department gets to see the quotes for both labor and parts and at least knows that to expect going forward for similar work. The dealer

www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

8/14/18 11:32 AM

rental department will have its own check-in and checkout personnel as part of their payroll cost, but the rest is supplied by other departments. The point here is dealers know their hard costs to maintain the fleet and what they need to do to better control costs. Pure rental companies usually have techs in house who prepare work orders for work performed on the fleet and vehicles. In many cases there was no formal review of the work order in terms of actual vs expected cost, nor much control of hours worked on a particular job. Having an internal service manager to estimate the work in terms of both parts and hours would mitigate this situation as long as there is accountability that goes along with the process. In short, pure rental companies need to keep “rental” cost of sales in line to the point where management is comfortable that their internal results are competitive against other outside service providers. Pure rental companies need to:

■■ Quickly examine planned equipment purchase orders and make adjustments as necessary ■■ Find out what all of their competitors are doing ■■ Have their sales personnel ask about sales calls from other sources and what “deals” they are throwing on the table ■■ Get control of costs should rental revenues decrease ■■ Be cautious about 2019 equipment orders ■■ Review bank covenant requirements and estimate 2018 EBITDA to see where things stand; you can mitigate a problem ■■ Get control of hours worked by both techs and drivers ■■ See if outsourcing works for you Competition is really good for the industry and for those with the ability to plan and adjust to the changes taking place. Those that follow the status quo, however, will find themselves eventually with a cash shortage if rental volume falls and they do nothing to fix the problem. ■

Practical Solutions for the

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS

Communication is Key to an Effective Parts Department // By Matt Traxler, parts manager, RDO Equipment Co, McKinney, TX

36

When service technicians have what they need, when they need it, equipment is out the door and customers are back up and running

and either get the customer back up and running or get a machine out of the floor, ready to rent. Having the right parts is also crucial for technicians going to jobsites to repair machines, as it eliminates any return trips and extra downtime for the customer.

W

Parts to sales

hile renting customers good, quality equipment is a high priority for any rental center, parts support is just as crucial. To effectively contribute to customer satisfaction and the company bottom line, a parts department must operate smoothly and efficiently. The biggest key to a high-performing parts department lies in communication. Every organization, from a small rental center to a large dealership that rents and sells equipment, has a lot going on – a lot of “moving parts” so to speak. If parts employees aren’t communicating effectively, mistakes will happen and opportunities will be missed. Here are the six ways a parts department must communicate – both internally and externally – to run the most efficient, effective operation.

Because parts professionals don’t typically have direct contact with customers, communication between parts and sales can lead to better, more personalized service. For example, a parts department may do electronic invoicing as the standard, but some customers prefer a mailed, paper invoice. By knowing this simple preference, parts can proactively accommodate and deliver a customer service win. In addition to frequent communication between parts and sales teams, effective parts departments can offer a direct line of communication with customers. If there’s ever an immediate need and a customer can’t reach his or her sales professional, having an established line of communication with the parts department gives the customer an option to get what’s needed quickly.

Parts to service

Parts to parts

A communication breakdown between parts and service – or lack of it altogether – can lead to unhappy customers or missed rental opportunity. When a machine is in for service, the goal is to get it back out on the jobsite or rental floor as soon as possible. With proactive, effective communication, parts specialists can ensure service technicians have what’s needed to complete work and get it done in a timely manner,

While easy to overlook, good communication within a department goes a long way to efficiency. Especially for a parts specialist with little experience, the opportunity to ask questions and learn on the job from colleagues is a great way to get training while contributing to the team’s efforts. Each member of a parts team also offers unique perspectives on the most popular and more specialty items, important when laying out a show floor. Good

8/14/18 11:32 AM

communication between a manager and the team can help determine the optimum placement of parts on the floor, as well as what should be kept off the floor, inaccessible to walk-in customers.

Parts to manufacturers Most manufacturers offer recommendations for which and how many parts to stock, based on machines offered at the store. Good communication with these partners ensures the department has the right selection of parts for customer uptime and profitability potential. Established parts-to-manufacturer communication also comes in handy for specialty or timely orders.

Parts to stores In the case of companies with multiple locations, effective communication between stores contributes to efficiency and greater customer uptime. For example, RDO Equipment Co. has seven locations in Texas alone. The company’s inventory process includes a monthly cycle count, which all stores share amongst each other. If a part is needed at one store, it may be faster and easier to source from another location versus ordering.

Parts to systems Finally, it’s difficult to imagine running a parts department without technology. Virtually all operate some sort of electronic system, everything from inventory to invoicing to ordering. While there isn’t one single system that’s right for every company, what is crucial for all is that their parts team effectively “communicates” with the system, including being properly trained on how to operate it, as well as taking care to avoid data entry or other human errors. Technology offerings will continue to expand, not just for companies, but customers as well. Parts departments that are on top of the ways to communicate with technology can implement and offer more of these opportunities to customers.

Bringing it all together Between managing inventory, pricing strategies, and a dozen other factors, communication might seem like the lowest priority for a parts department. However, effective communication between parts and several internal and external areas is among the most crucial pieces to the management puzzle. ■

Practical Solutions for the

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS

Digital Marketing Best Practices for Rental Companies How to promote your business in a manner today’s customers will respond to

T

he equipment rental industry is currently going through a digital transformation. The post-recession construction boom has created an interesting time in the rental market with shortened project schedules, a challenging labor market, and increased material costs. All this, coupled with the ever-changing digital and communications landscape, has established an acceptance of technology – even in an industry known to lag behind. Decades of relying on traditional, relationship marketing practices is no longer sufficient as locally owned yards to national rental companies look for new avenues for drawing more customers. To gain digital marketing expertise, we spoke with Jim Arabia, vice president of marketing at BigRentz, the largest online equipment rental network. He shares tips every rental equipment company can implement to maximize their online presence.

Rental: What is the main priority rental equipment companies should focus on when developing a digital marketing strategy? Digital or traditional, the main focus to any marketing strategy should be understanding your audience. Know your customers. In a survey of our customers, we found communication (in multiple forms), proactive information, and of course reliability of the equipment were all on the top of their needs. From there, build your strategy on the strengths of the company and the value you can bring customers. For example, if you are the only company to own certain classification of equipment within 500 miles, it is a strength you can focus on. Communicate to potential customers what equipment you have available at any given time for a designated geographical radius.

Rental: What is SEO and why does it matter? Search Engine Optimization (SEO), simply put, is the term for the process of making your website more visible in a search engine’s unpaid search results. These search

38

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

RPN0818_32-53_BizSurvivalGuide_JAL.indd 38

results are often referred as “organic” or “earned” results because they are not directly paid for. This // By Jim Arabia, VP of should not be mistaken for paid marketing, BigRentz online advertising which is a separate beast. The reason SEO is important is the more frequent your website appears in relevant search results lists, then the more visitors and potential customers you will gain. Understanding how search engines work dictates the drivers of an SEO strategy. Search engines, like Google and Bing, catalog or index the words people search for, audience search behavior, a website’s menu, along with many other criteria into an algorithm. Optimizing your website involves creating or editing content on your website to make it more relevant to specific searches. There are many ways to have better organic results – adding content in the form of blogs; promoting a webpage to increase the number of backlinks which can be done in the form of news or a press release; and having a social media presence. In fact, companies who blog are 13 times more likely to experience positive return on investment, and companies that blog generate 67 percent more leads than those who don’t.

Rental: How can rental companies provide a positive customer experience if the process goes digital? Getting back to understanding your customer, going digital should have the customer experience in mind, including the forms of communication and frequency they prefer. A good customer experience should also include information like clear pricing, equipment specs and a checkout process that is easy to navigate. Something to keep in mind is the changing behavior within the construction industry – people are more comfortable with and accepting of technology. We are used to online booking tools such as Expedia.com and Uber, and expect to receive a certain level of self-service like, for example, when ordering a pizza through a mobile app. If we can track when pizza is in the oven and when the driver is on his way, then we should be able to track the status of equipment rental.

ELEVATE BY SKYJACK:

Why You Should Involve the OEM in Your Off-Highway Telematics Solution Connected fleet technologies have been making their way into off-highway fleets for over a decade. Telematics isn’t a new concept for this industry, but what’s new is the improved ROI on the solutions available for off-highway fleets. Involving the OEM in your telematics solution means you have a better chance of exposing the most important machine data to the customer and end user. Connectivity can’t be an afterthought. Simply installing a black box on a machine after production to gather whatever data happens to be available leaves you with the wrong data points, at a higher price. Connectivity shouldn’t be treated as an add-on, but rather as a fundamental component of the machine’s operating system. This is why at Skyjack when we’re looking at machine design we’re asking the question “how does this improve connectivity, and what problems can that solve for our customers?” That means that machines are engineered with components whose

40

purposes are to deliver key data points to our customers via ELEVATE and provide them with data that can simplify service, fleet management, and have a clear impact on safety and profitability.

When you design the platform, or the scissor stack or the wheels of a lift, you’re always asking how these components fit into the overall customer experience of the product. How do those rails make the machine, that stack more efficient, or the wheels more stable? Each component is a fundamental part of the machine’s value to the customer, and to best benefit the customer machine connectivity needs to be treated the same way. Only by involving the OEM, who designs the machine from the ground up, can you expose the most important machine data to the customer and end user.

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS Additionally, while contractors, subcontractors or site managers may find you online, it’s still crucial to provide concierge-like service, such as texting, emailing or calling to confirm the booking, following up on delivery and pick-up, and requesting feedback after the rental has been returned.

Rental: What are features you recommend rental companies include in their website to maximize their digital marketing? Keeping the customer’s needs in mind, include features that make the rental process easier and faster and proactively addresses any issues they may have. In regards to ease and speed, make sure your website is user-friendly from a desktop or mobile device – simplicity in categories, design and number of tabs/pages will always prevail. To address any potential issues with the rental process, customer service or equipment, offer frequently asked questions, a blog that offers troubleshooting, time management and best practices tips; this content will also help with your SEO

efforts. Also consider setting up an on-line chat service to enable customers to connect with someone online (in addition to a phone line) to answer questions.

Rental: What makes BigRentz an expert in digital marketing? Since our launch in 2014, BigRentz has become the largest online rental network in the country with over 8,000 locations served through our network of over 1,600 rental partners. We have more than a dozen brilliant software, audience, and product engineers working nonstop to keep www.bigrentz.com at the forefront of technology, making the rental process as easy and efficient as possible for both our customers and rental partners. With more than 30% of BigRentz’s business being booked online, our customers feel comfortable about ordering online and rave about our customer portal. Again, we understand our customers and realized years ago that the construction industry is accepting technology seen in other industries. This number is only going to climb and I forecast this number surpassing 55% by 2019. ■

Connecting Rental Operations With Telematics

T

elematics has long been regarded as being the basis for tracking the location of vehicles and mobile equipment on construction sites. In the construction industry, equipment rental companies provide a valuable service to contractors for meeting the short-term and variable equipment demands of any project. However, when rental equipment or vehicles are deployed on a jobsite, monitoring them through telematics for location, utilization and maintenance typically remains the responsibility of the rental company and not the contractor. Most equipment rental companies and

42

equipment dealers with rental operations have a broad mix of equipment and vehicle types and brands in their fleet, which increases the complexity and challenge of leveraging telematics across operations.

Managing vehicle fleets and drivers Vehicles and drivers are always on the move to deliver and pick up rental equipment or to provide on-site maintenance and repair services. Every deployment must be scheduled and dispatched, including route planning and

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS

optimization to minimize extra travel time and fuel consumption. Knowing the locations for equipment delivery and pickup is essential for effective scheduling. Not only is it important to effectively plan their routes between destinations, but by monitoring how they operate, the vehicles organizations can realize significant savings in fuel costs and avoid unnecessary vehicle wear and tear. Telematics hardware and software enables a better understanding of driver behavior and can help organizations to provide additional education and safety training to their drivers. Reporting allows dispatchers to monitor actions such as a driver deviating from their route, or excessive acceleration and harsh braking incidents. Vehicles also require maintenance to remain in optimal operating condition. By using telematics solutions to monitor vehicle mileage, engine hours, location, and faults, vehicle fleet managers are better able to predict and plan for vehicle maintenance and downtime. In a business that depends on having reliable hauling and service vehicles, proactive vehicle maintenance helps ensure fleet availability, and extends vehicle lifespan and assists fleet managers in providing adequate fleet capacity.

Managing rental equipment A rental company’s goal is to maximize the utilization of its rental fleet, which is impacted by equipment availability. Availability may be impacted by the constant scheduling and movement of equipment between customers and jobsites, which makes it difficult to manage and maintain assets and understand usage. With rental periods lasting weeks or months, equipment must be maintained while out on rental. A persistent problem rental companies face is locating the equipment efficiently as customers often move assets around and away from the site of delivery. As a result, customer response times suffer, and the productivity of the service technicians is affected, decreasing the number of completed requests. Rental organizations provide value to their customers by providing equipment that operates optimally and without interruption during rental contracts. To ensure the rental fleet is in top operating shape, companies must proactively plan, schedule and complete preventive maintenance on their equipment. In many situations, the downtime of a piece of rental equipment poses a considerable cost to a construction business. The ability of the rental company to perform maintenance at more opportune times, for example when the equipment is not needed operationally, can have dramatic results. Construction jobs

44

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

RPN0818_32-53_BizSurvivalGuide_JAL.indd 44

run on tight margins and have many cross-dependencies between tasks. A piece of equipment that is down can bring the entire project to a halt, impacting much more than the function it was designed to perform. Telematics technology provides a solution to these challenges. Having visibility to equipment location, utilization, and health information, including faults and diagnostic codes, through a telematics data feed dramatically improves a rental company’s ability to deliver timely maintenance and service. When a rental organization can predict when their fleet requires maintenance, and proactively plan the service intervention with their customers, they ensure that their customers remain productive and become the customer’s partner, rather than just an equipment provider.

Automating your operations Telematics deployments are becoming much more cost-effective, enabling the entire rental operation to become increasingly connected and automated. Telematics today can share real-time information and connect mobile workers in the field with the back office, customers and equipment, allowing the entire service workflow to be more connected. When a piece of rental equipment is dropped off or picked up from a customer site, communication between the delivery drivers and the back office is often done manually and on pieces of paper. Also, the scheduling and routes that these drivers or service technicians take may be planned manually, which can create errors and inefficiencies. Rental companies can look to address these issues and improve operational efficiency by leveraging telematics integration with scheduling solutions to automate pickup and delivery schedules. Intelligent scheduling software enables rental businesses to optimize routes and schedules for the day and gain insight into what is happening in the field in real-time to manage processes including tracking arrival times efficiently, distances traveled, stops made.

The future of telematics for rentals Rental companies that invest in telematics-driven connected workflows will see many benefits. These workflows require a tight connection from the asset and vehicle to the scheduling system, and telematics is integral to providing this connection. Having the visibility to monitor the location and utilization of vehicle rental fleets with telematics technology can help rental businesses to manage customer demand, boost efficiencies and maintain a healthy ROI. ■

Emissions Technology Scania uses the same modular engine platform for all emissions requirements throughout its complete engine range. Since the base engine footprint is the same, it minimizes the need for global OEM’s to redesign their equipment for markets with different emission legislation. Scania’s solution to meet Tier 4 Final emission requirements utilizes a SCR system in conjunction with a low mixture and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). This low percentage EGR keeps the cooling package requirements similar to non-EGR engines. Unlike most engine manufacturers, Scania is able to meet the strict emission requirements of Tier 4 Final without adding a Diesel Particulate Filter. Scania also redesigned the

Scania Service Network SMART SUPPORT Powered by Scania was developed in order to safeguard the quality of service received and to maximize uptime for every customer. The major components of Smart Support are Training, Scania Assistance, Strategically Located

Service Points, Modular Concept, Parts Availability, Scania Handshake and Tailored Support. Scania’s service network includes over 700 technicians trained on the latest emissions standards and technology. Scania Assistance (1-800-2SCANIA) provides customers with a 24 hour reporting line for any service issues they may face. All Scania Assistance cases are monitored until the engine is put back in service in order to ensure the customer gets maximum uptime and minimum downtime from their Scania engine. Scania uses metrics from Scania Assistance to measure everything from how quickly a customer is responded to all the way up to the time it takes to get the equipment back in service. The Scania Handshake is a unique way of bringing customers and dealers together before service is needed. All engines share common parts, thus helping to ensure high availability (95% + parts availability within 24 hours worldwide) and access to fast and reliable service from close to 2,000 Scania service points worldwide, of which approximately 360 are strategically located in North America.

How Does the Retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy Impact Rental Business Operators? The views espoused by Justice Kennedy’s replacement will be disproportionately important, as his successor will likely continue to act as the swing vote

– whether a given law is enforceable under the U.S. Constitution, and whether to uphold, reverse and/or remand a decision made by a lower federal appellate or district court or state supreme court; ■■ The current maximum number of Justices who can serve on the Supreme Court is nine. (Note: That maximum was last tested in 1937 with Franklin Roosevelt’s plan to increase the maximum to 15; the plan was defeated in the Senate, which despite FDR’s immense popularity, was rightly concerned about the potentially disastrous impact such a move might have on the balance of power between the executive and judicial branches); ■■ Although theoretically, Supreme Court Justices interpret the Constitution impartially and without political bias, as a practical matter, their rulings tend to (but do not always) represent their perceived general worldviews (i.e., liberal or conservative). The current Supreme Court is/was more or less evenly divided, with four Justices leaning liberal; four Justices leaning conservative; and one Justice (Anthony Kennedy) portrayed at least in some circles as a “swing” vote, sometimes voting with conservatives; sometimes with liberals. Here is the current breakdown:

client of mine recently asked me what impact Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement from, and the possible appointment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to, the U.S. Supreme Court might have on the equipment rental industry and businesses in general. Justice Kennedy, a Reagan-era appointee to the U.S. Supreme Court, retired as of July 31, 2018. President Donald Trump has nominated as his replacement, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh, from a list of possible candidates. This could impact the legal landscape of the United States for decades to come for a variety of reasons: ■■ The Supreme Court is the final legal authority in the United States. Its decisions automatically overrule any contrary decisions made by lower courts (e.g., federal, state, county and municipal courts), though in many cases, it also effectively decides cases by refusing to hear them (letting the lower court’s ruling stand) or by remanding (returning) them to a lower court for further consideration of one or more issues; ■■ Under Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution, Supreme Court Justices are nominated by the JUSTICE: President, and they must be RUTH BADER GINSBURG “confirmed” by majority vote SONYA SOTOMAYOR of the U.S. Senate; ELENA KAGAN ■■ Once confirmed, they serve for life or until they are STEPHEN BREYER impeached or elect to resign JOHN ROBERTS or retire; CLARENCE THOMAS ■■ Among other things, the NEIL GORSUCH Supreme Court rules on quesSAMUEL ALITO tions of “Constitutionality” ANTHONY KENNEDY (Retiring)

Practical Solutions for the

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS

Obviously, the views espoused by Justice Kennedy’s replacement will be disproportionately important, as his successor will likely continue to act as the swing vote with respect to decisions on which the Supreme Court is otherwise evenly divided. That, however, is far from the end of the analysis. Remembering that, although the sitting President must nominate Justice Kennedy’s successor, the Senate must confirm the President’s nominee in order for him/ her to actually be appointed to the Supreme Court. Currently, 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats serve as U.S. Senators, but that doesn’t necessarily mean President Trump’s first choice will automatically be confirmed. As you might guess, an immense lobbying effort is already

Case Name: Issue:

underway seeking to influence the Senators’ votes to confirm or reject President Trump’s nominee(s). That, coupled with each Senator’s individual leanings, means they don’t always vote strictly along party lines. Breaking with the party line isn’t altogether common in the current polarized political environment, but it does happen periodically. Thus, although Judge Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court is more likely than not to be confirmed, it is not guaranteed.

Effects on rental operators The Supreme Court typically considers between 100 and 150 cases each year out of roughly 7,000 requests. Those cases, of course, can have far-reaching effects on a range of economic and social issues. It can, therefore, be difficult to predict which decisions will be most impactful

Potential Impact:

AIR AND LIQUID SYSTEMS CORP. V. DEVRIES

Whether a defendant in a products liability case can be held liable under maritime law for injuries caused by products that the defendant did not make, sell, or distribute.

“Products Liability” cases (those in which a business owner in the “stream of commerce” can be held liable for all damages arising from an alleged product defect) are perhaps the greatest single threat to rental operators because damage claims can be enormous. A ruling that broadens the already immense net cast by product liability law (which already permits injured plaintiffs to sue every party in the “chain of distribution,” including rental operators) could expose rental and other business operators to more and larger liability claims.

NEW PRIME INC. V. OLIVEIRA

Whether the Federal Arbitration Act applies to an agreement that purports to create an independent contractor relationship in the same manner in which it applies to an employment agreement.

The federal arbitration act applies to contracts of employment of transportation workers, but historically, not to independent contractors. However, suits by independent contractors claiming to “actually” be employees under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) have become commonplace. Employers often prefer to arbitrate such claims because doing so can be quicker and less costly than going to trial. At issue is whether an employer may require arbitration in this type of case (one in which an employee was engaged as an independent contractor, but now claims to be an employee). A ruling enabling employers to require arbitration instead of going to trial would reduce the potential impact of such FLSA-based lawsuits.

LAMPS PLUS, INC. V. VARELA

Whether a general arbitration agreement in an employment contract can be used to enable an employee to arbitrate on a “class-wide” basis, instead of individually.

Class actions are another existential threat to rental companies because class-wide awards (those made to potentially thousands of “similarly-situated” individual claimants against a defendant) can reach tens of millions of dollars. Thus, any ruling which expands the ability of employees or other parties to seek “class-wide” awards can yield potentially disastrous consequences for rental companies and small businesses generally.

STURGEON V. FROST

Whether the National Forest Service or a state agency controls the use of state, native corporation and private land located within the boundaries of the National Park System.

Federal control over state and privately held lands in or near federal lands and waterways can significantly impact the value of adjacent privately held lands, and obviously, the businesses located on such lands (somewhat similar to EPA control over “navigable waterways” – which might theoretically include diches and ponds). Consequently, a ruling that reinforces federal control may negatively impact the value of such lands and have a chilling effect on local business development, including, of course, construction projects that require rented equipment.

TIMBS V. INDIANA

Whether the 8th Amendment’s prohibition on excessive fines applies to states.

States may impose severe penalties against individuals and companies for failures to comply with state laws, which might include, for example, licensing and permitting requirements, statemandated emissions limitations, inspection and reporting requirements, etc. Such penalties sometimes rise to the level of property (e.g., equipment) forfeitures. The 8th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits excessive fines that are grossly disproportionate to the offense. Thus, a ruling favoring federal control may benefit rental companies and small businesses by enabling them to avoid severe penalties and/or equipment forfeitures under state laws in some cases.

WAYERHAUSER CO. V. U.S. FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICE

Whether the US Fish and Wildlife Service can designate private property as critical habitat (and substantially impair its use and its economic value) even though that property is not currently being used as such – even if the FWS ignores the harm to the private property owner in doing so.

Federal takings of privately owned property on the “chance” that such property might at some point be useful as wildlife habitat (in this case, the Dusky Gopher Frog, which had not inhabited the property for decades) poses a threat to any business located in or near any form of wildlife essentially, every business with a physical presence in the U.S. Both the federal district court and the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals held in favor of the Fish and Wildlife Service. The private owner of the property is now appealing the case to the Supreme Court. A ruling in favor of the FWS would tend to expand its “arbitrary” power to restrict the use of private property; a ruling against it would tend to restrict that power - significantly.

Practical Solutions for the

FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESS

for business. Nonetheless, following are several cases that, in my view, are more likely than most to have a substantial impact on rental operators and/or on business operators generally. (Note: These are summaries which have been shortened in an effort to make them useful to the reader.) Obviously, decisions made by the Supreme Court can impact businesses in a variety of ways, both directly and indirectly. Thus, the makeup of the Court can have a dramatic impact on the U.S. business climate for many years - think of the High Court’s rulings on monopolies (Standard Oil; 1915) and Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s, and its recent reinterpretation of the Fair Labor Standards Act (broadening overtime exemptions), among others. A swing vote on the above issues could well alter the balance between business interests and, for example, environmental groups, employees, consumers, and (horrifyingly) class-action plaintiffs’ lawyers. But in spite of the current spate of hand-wringing amongst special interest groups, here are a few things to consider: ■■ Laws originate with legislatures, not with the Supreme Court; ■■ Regulatory enforcement efforts originate with regulators, not with the Supreme Court; ■■ The Supreme Court’s job is to interpret the constitutionality and enforceability of laws, lower court rulings and regulatory actions; it is not to make laws; ■■ Legislatures, lower courts and regulatory authorities have the ability to modify and conform their efforts to the Constitution, if and when laws, rulings and/ or regulatory actions are reversed and remanded or deemed unconstitutional; and finally; ■■ Consider also that the Supreme Court has remained remarkably balanced between liberals and conservatives since the 1940s. Indeed, the last President to appoint more than two Justices was Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, who actually appointed four, starting with Sandra Day O’Connor in 1981. That “balancing” might not be as much a result of good fortune and timing as it appears. In the current situation, if President Trump is successful in appointing a conservative to the Court, the balance would be five conservatives to four liberals, at least for the near term. And how long might the “near term” last for this Supreme Court? No one knows for certain, but conservative Clarence Thomas, who was appointed in 1991, is now 70 years old. If, for example, he were to retire, or we were to see a Justice pass away as we did, sadly, with Antonin Scalia in 2016, during the next presidential term – which may see the election of a Democrat, the balance

52

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

RPN0818_32-53_BizSurvivalGuide_JAL.indd 52

of the Supreme Court could immediately shift to five liberals/fourconservatives, assuming 85-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg doesn’t retire first. Also, remember that although popularly portrayed as a “swing” vote, Anthony Kennedy was, himself, a conservative appointee of the Reagan administration. And as the Court’s rulings during the 2017-2018 session suggest (including upholding the most recent travel ban, overturning mandatory non-member public union funding, and overturning two state laws aimed at limiting religious expression), had he not retired, he likely would have continued to at least lean to the right. Consequently, it would take an extraordinarily conservative, almost “alt-right,” appointee to truly shift the balance of the Supreme Court significantly from what it was immediately prior to Justice Kennedy’s retirement. Given the political pressure being exerted by the general public, the left and the center-right, that would appear an uphill battle at best. Ultimately, it might be the very “balancing” mentioned above that has been the greatest benefit of the seemingly fraught Supreme Court selection process. If it has generated fierce battles over appointments, it has also undoubtedly had a moderating effect on both sides of the political aisle. Though each, when in power, might feel tempted to push ideological limits (think of the multitude of efforts to do everything from limiting voting rights – which could at one time be exercised only by male real estate owners, to criminalizing political speech), each is forced to constrain its impulse to overreach, in part because doing so could compel a current or future Supreme Court to reject not only its present attempt to do so, but possibly also much of its prior work leading up to that effort. The value of that balancing effect has almost certainly not been lost on the Justices themselves – each of whom makes his/her own decisions about things like when or when not to retire (and during whose administration), undoubtedly factoring into that decision such considerations as “What is best for my country?” In the final analysis, Supreme Court appointments are immensely important to the United States, the businesses that operate within its borders and the millions of people those businesses employ. But, as they have since 1791, a great many more factors than mere politics bear on those appointments, not to mention the decisions ultimately rendered by the Court. Fortunately for us, that Court was created first and foremost to uphold the Constitution, and upon appointment, each Supreme Court Justice takes an oath to faithfully and impartially discharge and perform the duties incumbent upon him/her under that great document. I would venture to guess they will continue to do so, regardless of politics – theirs or others’. ■

Joan Westwater, product manager, jobsite, Allmand: Lighting technology is constantly advancing in order to provide the customer with more efficient and economical choices, as well as flexibility for the jobsite. Different fuels and power systems utilizing electric, chain, hybrid battery and solar technologies, along with diffused lighting for DOT compliance regulations and construction safety, are all becoming more and more critical to the jobsite. Eric Massinon, business development director at Chicago Pneumatic Power Technique: Timers and photo eye options are choices that help reduce fuel usage and the labor hours required to tend to multiple light towers. The optics and housing designs improve the amount of light cast from the elements and the optics help control the light directionally from the element, increasing the power and durability.

CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT EQUIPMENT Angel Nieto, product manager power & light, Atlas Copco Power Technique: The ability to spread the light to optimize light coverage is just as important as efficiently producing light. The design of the optics makes the difference in achieving maximum light coverage. At Atlas Copco, we have reduced the number of LED chips to one or two, depending on the model, and used the right optics to spread the light beam in horizontal and vertical directions. The floodlight is also important. Our design rapidly radiates the heat produced in the chip, keeping the temperature at the correct level to guarantee performance and durability. The expected average life is 30,000 hours. Erin Brown, product specialist senior, Doosan Portable Power: LED is still the most prevalent trend. It’s definitely gaining traction as the prices are going down. Total cost of ownership is becoming more important to rental companies, vs the equipment acquisition cost, so more are actually buying LED models because they cost less to own over the long term. At this point, 50 percent of our customers are purchasing LED lamps over traditional metal halide.

Rental: Electric light towers are getting some buzz. What are their primary applications and what are their benefits and drawbacks? Brown: I still think it’s a niche product and I’ll be interested to see how it takes hold. If you need a a primary power source to provide light, a dieselpowered unit is still your best bet. Westwater: Electric light towers are becoming more popular especially for the special events industry where indoor applications, engine noise and

58

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

RPN0818_54-61_CSE_JAL.indd 58

fuel emissions are a concern. Electric light towers are typically LED lights requiring less power to operate and require an auxiliary power source, or to be plugged into a standard wall outlet. They are small and compact in size, so they can be easily maneuverable by hand, lighter in weight, and simple to operate, providing flexibility for the everyday end user.

p Different fuels and power systems utilizing electric, chain, hybrid battery and solar technologies, along with diffused lighting for DOT compliance regulations and construction safety, are all becoming more and more critical to the jobsite.

Rental: We’re hearing a lot about paralleling. What is it, and how does it work with light towers? What application is it designed for? Westwater: Paralleling light towers refers to ‘daisy chain’ towers, where multiple towers are chained together, providing several hundred feet of lighting powered by a single source. The chain tower contains no engine or other power source, and best of all — no emissions. It receives its power from the parent generator, light tower, or from an auxiliary power source. One parent generator can power several chain towers, depending on its size and power requirements. This results in flexibility to the jobsite by having a single source provide the

necessary power for several chain towers as needed, requiring less overall fuel, less maintenance and less noise. Chain towers can be used in any application where light towers are utilized, but the application will demand tower durability requirements. Chain towers are most popular for special events where minimal refueling and less noise are important factors. Massinon: Chicago Pneumatic’s range of new electrical light towers (CPLT P2, CPLT V2, CPLT V3 and the CPLT E3) can all be plugged into the power grid or can be used with power from a generator. Keep in mind you’re limited to the number of these light towers by the size of the circuit they are being used with. The total number used in parallel can’t require more power than the circuit protection is sized for. For example, a 20-amp circuit can supply up to 2,400 watts, enough to power three of the E3 light towers. Or a 30-amp breaker can provide up to 3,600 watts for light. That’s enough power for seven of the V3 LED light towers. The light towers are all rated by the wattage needed. By simply adding the wattage you can calculate the power needed. With these new light towers, the benefit is that a single generator can provide power for a multitude of light towers. This reduces capital cost, operating cost and service cost — the rental trifecta. Nieto: LED technology is bringing new possibilities to the light business. In particular, lower consumption and more compact, lighter design expands the possibilities of mobile electric light towers. For example, with Atlas Copco’s electric HiLight light towers, we can now easily couple several light

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS IN AERIAL LIFT HYBRID TECHNOLOGY Power systems for aerial work platforms continue to evolve, just like the machines they drive. It wasn’t long ago that engine choices were simply: “Give me a diesel engine for outdoor applications and battery powered for working indoors.” Adapting to changing markets, machine applications and contractor needs, engine options and designs have evolved significantly over the past decade. Increasingly stringent emissions regulations have shelved simple, mechanical engine designs in favor of more complex electronic models with SCR and/or DPF technology to reduce NOx emissions and particulate matter. In the mid-2000’s, aerial work platform equipment with dual fuel sources for the same internal combustion (IC) engine came into popularity because they gave contractors the flexibility to work on both indoor and outdoor applications with the same machine. Scissor lifts and booms equipped with both gasoline and LPG tanks gave contractors the ability to work inside using LPG fuel.

What is considered a hybrid? Today, scissor lifts and booms offer true hybrid operation to increase operating flexibility. Hybrid models employ a combination of two different power sources – a small diesel engine with generator and battery drive. These units significantly increase rental flexibility and boost machine utilization by offering the www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

0818_TerexTestimonial_full.indd 59 RPN0818_54-61_CSE_JAL.indd

same productive operation as a diesel rough terrain unit, with the added benefit of offering extended operating intervals indoors under battery power. Here’s the Genie tale of our two hybrid systems…

Bi-Energy The first-generation hybrid technology, Bi-Energy, can be found on models like the mid-size Genie® GS™-4069 BE scissor lift and Z®-45/25 BE boom, among others. These simple engine/battery systems include a generator that can charge the batteries during operation. Bi-Energy models are designed to offer a full-day’s work on an overnight battery charge and operate primarily as a DC electric machine until the batteries begin to discharge. During operation, the operator flicks a switch to turn on the diesel engine/generator for battery charging. With this design, the IC engine is designed solely for battery charging. Therefore, the batteries must be charged for machine operation – either overnight or by the generator while working. If the machine batteries can fully discharge, the operator may need to wait until the batteries receive at least a partial charge for full machine operation.

Fuel-Electric – The Future In response to demand for high performance, low emissions aerial work platforms, Genie recently developed the Fuel-Electric (FE) hybrid system, powering the Genie Z-60/37

FE boom. This advanced generation of hybrid technology works much like a hybrid car – think more along the lines of the performance Porsche Panamera rather than the Prius – as battery charging happens automatically. The hybrid Genie Z-60/37 FE boom rivals the performance, power and torque delivered by its IC-powered boom counterparts, but with much more versatility and fuel efficiency. As with Bi-Energy hybrids, the FE design delivers a full day’s battery-powered operation on a full charge when working indoors in “DC” mode. In “Hybrid” mode, this go-anywhere, rough-terrain boom boasts a small 24.8 hp diesel engine and AC motor/generator for battery charging. Unlike the Bi-Energy design where the engine is manually turned on and off for battery charging, hybrid operation on FE models automatically senses when the batteries need a charge and seamlessly turns the engine on and off to top off the batteries after the operator has pressed the foot switch. This results in more than a week of run time on one tank of diesel fuel. Better still, should the operator fully discharge the batteries and forget to recharge them, the boom can operate any function on engine power while the batteries are being charged. And for an extra performance boost, both the engine/generator and battery systems can be used together to give an extra performance boost when needed. The Genie Z-60/37 FE hybrid articulating boom offers the next generation of hybrid design and technology to the market. Today, rental companies and contractors alike continue to find new ways to complete their jobs more efficiently, with lower acquisition and operating costs, and maximum performance using this advanced hybrid boom.

towers and run them from a single power source, daisy chaining them. For rental jobs where there are noise limitations, indoor projects or where high mobility is important (e.g. urgent deployment required, frequent relocation of the light towers), the new electric light towers, and specifically the ability to have them coupled, adds additional flexibility and versatility for rental companies and their customers. Electric light towers can also be used in conjunction with self-powered light towers to improve light coverage at the jobsite.

Rental: What is the importance of having different size light towers and how can using paralleling technology meet the needs of more rental customers? Nieto: Every application requires a different solution in order to optimize performance, efficiency and benefit. Depending on the relevancy of glare, mobility, noise, serviceability, ease of use and — of course — light coverage, Atlas Copco’s range of light towers was designed to meet all these needs.

t Daisy chain light towers can be linked together and run off of one primary power source.

60

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

RPN0818_54-61_CSE_JAL.indd 60

Massinon: One size fits all is rarely is the best solution. If you need light in a warehouse under construction and you have power from the grid, you wouldn’t want engine-driven light towers. Instead you would want the P2, V2 or V3 electrical light towers — depending on how much light is needed — which have no fuel or engine service required. Or if you have a location for temporary parking where you do not have power from the grid and the light will be spread out, you would not want the cost of long power cords strung across a parking lot. This is an application for the CPLT V4S, V4W or the V5+S diesel engines. Each application should be looked at individually.

Rental: What are some benefits of LED technology for light towers? Massinon: LED lights provide brighter, cleaner light – more like day light – and require less power and less maintenance. LED elements last longer and can be turned on and off like the lights in your home. The conventional metal halide (MH) type bulbs require time to come on and they can’t be turned on and off without a cool down period. MH bulbs also require a ballast, which can burn out or fail due to incorrect starting or stopping. Nieto: The benefits of LED technology are countless... low energy consumption, durable performance, robust design, instant-on light, the list goes on. An important benefit that might often be over looked is that LED has a Color Rendering Index (CRI) above 85 (solar light is 100, metal halide light is around 60). This means that colors can be represented more accurately, closer to solar daylight conditions. This is critical in certain applications.

t Vertical mast light towers have a more compact footprint, so more of them can fit on a flatbed truck.

Rental: Is there still a demand for traditional, incandescent light towers? How should a rental company manage their light tower inventory? Brown: LED light towers are definitely gaining traction, but metal halide is still the gold standard, it’s what everyone is comfortable with. But we have seen prices for LEDs coming down across the industry so that will make their popularity grow. Westwater: Metal Halide light towers remain the standard work horse of the industry where light output and even distribution of light are required. Standard diesel/metal halide units should be on hand and readily available for many of the construction applications. For event rentals, LED units are required where exhaust or noise is an issue. Rental companies should carry an inventory that consists of a mix of the different powered models and different light types in order to adequately serve the different industries utilizing light towers. ■

atz Diesel recently announced the expansion of its H Series of watercooled engines with the introduction of the 3-cylinder 3H50 engines. Designed to meet varying emissions regulations, the 3H50 engines provide a power range of 18.4-46.5 kW (24.7-62.4 hp) and torque output of 130-200 Nm (95.9-147.5 ft.-lbs.). With the addition of these engines, the H Series now provides an overall power range of 18.4-62 kW (24.7-83.1 hp) and torque up to 265 Nm (195.5 ft.-lbs.) to meet manufacturers’ various application needs. According to Hatz, the expanded range also enables an expansion of the types of applications in which the engines can be used. In conjunction with the series expansion, the company has implemented a state-of-the-art production line for the H Series. Stephan Gritsch, marketing team leader at Hatz Diesel, said the combination of using the latest manufacturing processes with innovative technologies within the engine ensure low fuel consumption, and long maintenance intervals. “All of this not only makes working with

the engines are capable of powering machines that traditionally use significantly larger engines. According to RichterSchutzeneder, the H Series has shown several advantages in comparison to competitive engines in the 19-55 kW (25.5-73.8 hp) market. In regards to power density, the engines have shown the ability to achieve more than 28 kW (37.6 hp) per 1 L (0.3 gal.) of displacement, which is “way more than anyone else in the market is able to achieve,” said Richter-Schutzeneder. For displacement to torque ratio, which he said is becoming an increasingly more important factor for customers, the engines are able to achieve about 135 Nm (99.6 ft.-lbs.) per 1 L displacement. The engines’ combustion strategy, known as iHACS (intellgent Hatz Advanced Combustion), aids their performance, as well. “This self-developed strategy is used throughout the whole family,” Richter-Schutzeneder said. “It leads specifically to very high combustion efficiency, low combustion noise and high torque.” In addition, he said it is a Stage V ready technology. He also emphasized the care put into the packaging of the engine, as well as ensuring lower friction in order to help reduce fuel consumption. Fewer wear parts are included, which has lead to maintenance intervals being extended to 250-500 hours. The company said it is only using premium suppliers—such as Mahle, Bosch, and Borg-Warner—for the various engine components in order to ensure performance and production quality.

Models to meet varying emissions regulations The H Series now includes a total of seven engine models, each of which has been designed to meet various

application needs and emissions regulations around the world. The original 4H50TIC engine, for instance, is designed for the 37-55 kW (49.6-73.7 hp) power class and meets EU Stage IIIB and U.S. Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. In March 2018, Hatz began serial production of the 3H50TIC, an 18.446 kW engine also designed for Stage IIIB and Tier 4 Final. The letters at the end of 3H50 engine name refers to the included aftertreatment system components, and thus the emissions regulations the engine meets. Like the other H Series engines, the 3H50TIC includes a common rail injection system, as well as a turbocharger. For the aftertreatment, it features an intercooler, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (cEGR) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). To meet the impending Stage V emissions regulations in the EU—which go into effect January 1, 2019—Hatz is developing the 3H50TICD, expected to be available at the end of this year. RichterSchutzeneder said every engine over 19 kW is expected to require a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in order to meet the emissions requirement. The 3H50TICD features a separable DOC/ DPF, as well as cEGR. The DOC/DPF system, called optiHEAT, is compact and flexible so it can be installed where the OEM sees fit. Richter-Schutzeneder said the optiHEAT system has been robustly designed and optimized for long periods between regeneration cycles. It is also able to achieve idle regeneration in which cylinders are deactivated in order to get the highest possible temperature for the system to regenerate itself while the engine is at idle speed. For markets that are less regulated and have bad fuel quality, Hatz offers the 4H50TI. The company avoided using sensitive components such as

ppm. The lack of an exhaust aftertreatment system also makes it a more cost-effective solution for customers, as well as enables power to be slightly boosted up to 62 kW. Other than the aftertreatment system, the engine design is the same as

its emissions-compliant counterparts in the H Series. Hatz is in the process of developing a 3H50TI version, as well, which is expected in the third quarter of 2019; it will target the 19-37 kW power class and be available to the same markets as the 4H50TI. Also under development is the 3H50T which targets the under-19 kW power class. As its power output is around 18.4 kW, it is capable of meeting Stage V and Tier 4 Final emissions regulations but without the need for any aftertreatment system. “[We] want to downsize applications under 19 kW in order to help customers avoid [using] DPF, which often doesn’t fit into machine[s], but still meet Stage V emissions,” said Richter-Schutzeneder. “The nice thing is under 19 kW, worldwide all the emission levels are the same, so therefore this is one product for the whole world.” Designed to replace 30 kW (40.2 hp) engines, the 3H50T is capable of producing 130 Nm (95.9 ft.-lbs.) of torque which he said is 50% more torque than the currently strongest engine in its market class. All of the engines are available in open power unit (OPU) and silent pack versions. The OPU is complete packaging which includes the radiator system and associated hoses. This design can help ease design and installation for manufacturers as all of the necessary components are already integrated. A silent pack includes the OPU and additional packaging to provide weather protection, as well as further noise reduction. With the silent pack noise is reduced another 60%. “We started with one engine, and now have seven versions; four different emission [derivatives], based on two different displacements. With this family [we] cover the full line between 18.4 and 55 kW,” concluded RichterSchutzeneder. ■

“THE NICE THING IS UNDER 19 KW, WORLDWIDE ALL THE EMISSION LEVELS ARE THE SAME, SO THEREFORE THIS IS ONE PRODUCT FOR THE WHOLE WORLD.” RICHTER-SCHUTZENEDER, HATZ DIESEL

TL6R: SMALL AND AGILE COMPACT TRACK LOADER A pioneer in the compact equipment industry, Takeuchi introduced the first compact track loader (CTL) to the market in the mid-1980s. The innovation continues with the TL6R, now the most compact CTL in its lineup. An agile, radial lift machine, the unit is easy to transport, and features outstanding stability and performance in rental, agricultural, general contracting and landscaping industries. Powered by a reliable and efficient 65.2 hp engine, the TL6R delivers excellent power on the jobsite with a maximum lift height of 9 feet 6.4 inches, and a rated operating capacity of 1,841 pounds. Compact dimensions, including a height of 6 feet 5.8 inches, width of 5 feet and weight of 7,485 pounds, enable the CTL to access and work efficiently in areas with limited space.

For greater operator comfort, the optional cab features a swing-out door, heat and air conditioning. For even further overall ride quality, the unit comes standard with a quiet track design with flotation pads, reducing vibration and noise levels. Standard on most Takeuchi excavators and CTLs is Takeuchi Fleet Management (TFM). The telematics system is available during the machine’s warranty period of two years at no additional cost. It provides a variety of data points including machine health and condition, run time and machine location. The user-friendly TFM system can help reduce downtime, control costs, perform remote diagnostics and schedule maintenance. For details on the TL6R and more innovations that have made Takeuchi a world leader, visit www.takeuchi-us.com.

The newly designed cabin has an overhead 5.7-inch color multi-informational display and backlit rocker switches that control a variety of machine functions.

ADDITION OF VACUUM LIFTING SYSTEM FOR COMPACT EQUIPMENT

RAISES VALUE OF RENTAL FLEET M6 Concrete, a Kansas-based supplier of materials and equipment with strong ties to the concrete industry, added a new lifting technology to their fleet designed to operate in conjunction with skid steers and other compact host machines. Vice President of Operations Andy Munley said the new Vacuworx SL 2 Subcompact Vacuum Lifting System is raising eyebrows and has the potential to catch on fast among rental customers in search of innovative material handling solutions. The SL 2 features an integrated 24” x 24” vacuum pad and a vacuum pump that operates using the auxiliary hydraulics from the host machine to create a powerful positive seal to lift www.ForConstructionPros.com/RENTAL

saw cut concrete, granite and marble slabs and other materials. Compatible with all brands of skid steers, the SL 2 was designed as a perfect fit for floor, driveway, sidewalk, road and landscaping projects. As an example, one of M6 Concrete’s customer rented the SL 2

to pull 40, 4 ft by 4 ft slabs as part of a parking lot replacement job. The contractor was impressed with the system in terms of maneuverability and potential to save time on the ground. “Instead of a guy setting the bolt and an operator on the machine, one can go out and make money doing something else,” Munley said. “We’re getting great feedback from our customers. The market for vacuum lifting technology will grow as more people see the equipment in action.”

UNITED RENTALS COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF BAKERCORP United Rentals Inc. announced it has completed its previously announced acquisition of BakerCorp International Holdings Inc. (“BakerCorp”) for a total purchase price of approximately $715 million. The transaction was funded through a combination of cash and available capacity on the company’s senior secured asset-based revolving credit facility. BakerCorp is a leading multinational provider of tank, pump, filtration and trench shoring rental solutions for a broad range of industrial and construction applications. With the acquisition, United Rentals substantially augments its bundled solutions for fluid storage, transfer and treatment; expands its strategic

fleet, 46 branches in North America and 11 in Europe, and approximately 950 employees to United Rentals’ footprint. For the trailing 12 months ended May 31, 2018, BakerCorp generated $79 million of adjusted EBITDA at a 26.9% margin on $295 million of total revenue.

Michael Kneeland, chief executive officer of United Rentals, said, “The Baker acquisition is a highly strategic move on our part to grow our Specialty segment. Our expanded expertise in fluid solutions will benefit our customers and build long-term value for our investors. Today we welcomed almost a thousand top-notch colleagues as the first step in the integration.” The company has updated its 2018 guidance solely to reflect the acquisition of BakerCorp. The new guidance includes $140 million of total revenue, $40 million of adjusted EBITDA and $50 million of gross capital spending, reflecting the anticipated impact of the acquisition on the company’s full-year results.

EYE ON RENTAL // B y

Dick Detmer

BY DICK DETMER

Implementing Reliable Safety Practices in a Small Business Even when resources are stretched thin, safety needs to be a priority that is never overlooked

S

afety is one of the most important topics and is vital for business survival. One of the major hurdles in developing a system for implementing safe practices in a rental company is that there is so much to cover. Equipment rental company owners and managers, like all small business operators, are busy taking care of the day-to-day running of their companies, so it can be very difficult to develop a comprehensive safety program. It’s important to start the process toward heightened safety awareness and better safe practices. It isn’t terribly difficult – it just takes time and organization. A very simple beginning that one could start today deals with the questions: “How do we find time to discuss safety?” and “How do we make employees embrace it?” I believe safety messages should be presented every day. Call it a daily safety “huddle.” Just as professional football players huddle before every offensive play, a safety huddle (or a series of them for different groups of employees) could take place near the start of every day. These would not be the longer safety meetings that are also important, but rather the very brief (less than a minute or two) version that offer a quick safety reminder or two. An example would be a reminder to lift items properly throughout the day. The next day’s reminder could be to use personal protective equipment in the performance of tasks. Some of these huddles could be less than 20 seconds, so this is something rental

companies could do even in their busiest of seasons.

Make a firm commitment to follow through One of the keys to success of this or any other safety initiative is to make a firm commitment to continue doing it. Remember, you want your staff to embrace the continuity of doing their work safely time after time and day after day, so it’s important to develop the same habit in presenting your safety messages without the same excuses that employees would use for not performing their work safely. Putting safety into practice doesn’t always need to be an all or nothing proposition. A safety manual doesn’t need to be a literary masterpiece. In my opinion, it should be simple and easy to use. If it isn’t, it probably won’t be used at all. Also, it’s important to keep up with ever-changing local, state and federal safety rules and regulations to be certain your company is in compliance. This is your

responsibility as a business owner or operator. Here are just a few additional points to consider: Get employees involved, if possible. It’s more likely that employees will be committed to safety if they have a role in developing some of rules and guidelines. Be certain to document your safety efforts. Document safety meetings and other safety investments, as this proves you are serious about safety and safe practices. Every meeting the company has should contain a safety message component. Don’t think of a safety program as just another requirement that is placed on a business to make one’s life miserable. Think of it as an important moral and civic duty to help keep employees and customers happy and healthy. Tap into all of the possible sources for relevant safety materials. (Also, consider having an experienced rental business consultant offer some assistance in getting the process started.) The task of implementing a safety program can seem very daunting. There are so many safety facets to consider in the rental business, including the vast array of rental equipment, customer safety, staff safety, delivery vehicle safety, safety involved with your facility, and more. Remember, safety is often overlooked but is an extremely important part of business survival. ■
