EDITOR’S COMMENT

Refocusing on sustainability As editor of what is essentially a technical forestry magazine, it is very easy to put the blinkers on and think that forests around the world are just there to be harvested and processed. We (read: you) work tirelessly through innovation and research to deliver more sophisticated machines capable of doing a better job and a more profitable job. The units constantly become bigger and better. Though we all appreciate the incredible resource that is the forest, it is usually as an innate understanding of the work environment. Not often enough do we actually stop to consider how roundly valuable our forests are and the sustainability of our work practices. This is at least what occurred to me recently when reading an interview with Professor Zhang Shougong, President of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, who addressed the role of research in sustainable development of forest resources. Central to Shougong’s sustainable vision is the forest’s role as “the main body of [a] territorial ecosystem”. He describes forests as a “renewable resource with a public attribute, which plays an irreplaceable and vital role in the sustainable development” of our societies. As we know too well, this development plays a crucial role in the form of industry or, as Shougong put it, the forest has an “important position in … global forestry, such as forest employment, forest production value and trade of forest products”. “Consequently, the influence of its forest economic benefit, ecological benefit and social benefit are great”, for each country blessed with a forestry resource, he said. What our forests do for us is of course just one part of the equation. The other equally, if not more, important part is the impact we have on the forest. The most immediately obvious impact we have on forests, at least according to the evening news in most countries, is the destruction of old growth forests in Brazil and Indonesia as a crisis in motion. This is something various groups continue to fight vigorously and their cause is something the

4 International Forest Industries | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016

industry should continue to support with equal verve. It is in this respect – the issue of improved practice – that Shougong’s comments were most enlightening and encouraging. Using his home of China as an example, Shougong said the past 35 years had seen “great strides” forward, as the conservation of natural forest and the energetic growth of planted forest have enabled China to enjoy both forest quantity and forest quality improvements in parallel. The forest area has expanded by 80%, the standing volume is up by 68%, while 2,740 nature reserves have been established covering 14.83% of the national land area – higher than the world average level, according to Shougong. “In addition to improving the ecological environment in China by forests, the forest production function and ecosystem services have been in an effective play, by producing multiple forest products, creating employment opportunities, and thus contributing to poverty alleviation in hilly areas,” he said. “A high number of venues also have been offered for the conduction of forest tourism and forest cultural activities, receiving billions of visitor person-time.” This style of holistic approach to forestry has been perfected in places like Scandinavia and is now being adopted in emerging economic powerhouses such as China, and in the developing world, most noticeably in some parts of South America. With so many mainstream headlines devoted to the atrocities inflicted on our forests, it is comforting to know that the focus on sustainability we are devoted to as an industry is an equally powerful force for the good. Enjoy! Chris Cann Editor

LESS FUEL CONSUMPTION

Convincing performance, excellent fuel economy, and all-around uncompromising high quality are distinctive to the new G-series. The John Deere 1270G harvester is more powerful than its predecessor, yet consumes 10% less fuel. This strong machine has enough of power and the new control system makes the boom very precise and quick. John Deere harvesters come standard with Processing Power Control (PPC) to balance power and fuel economy in different situations. G-Series is more than a machine.

John Deere 2154G/2156G and 2654G/2654G swing machines boost operator comfort and productivity MOLINE, Ill. (October 17, 2016) — John Deere is setting a new standard for the logging industry with the introduction of the 2154G/2156G and 2654G/2656G Forestry Swing Machines. Designed to increase operator efficiency and performance, the G-Series machines can maneuver through the toughest of jobs, from loading to processing big wood. Much like the large frame machines, the 2156G and 2656G Log Loaders are distinguished by the 56 model number, while the Forestry Excavators retain the 54 model number. All four models are equipped with a powerful PowerTech Plus 6.8L engine. On the 2154G and 2156G models, the new engine reduces fuel usage by 5 to 8 percent. The G-Series machines include a variety of features to increase operator comfort. The climate-controlled, redesigned operator cab is much larger and quieter than the predecessors, and is equipped with ergonomic controls, excellent window clarity and isolation mounting, boosting operator productivity from dawn to dusk. The Forestry Excavator models feature a standard 25 percent larger side-entry cab, while the Log Loaders/Processors have a standard elevated rear entry cab, which allows for safe and easy entry and exit. A cab-forward option on the 2156G and 2656 Log

Loader/Processor models boosts operator confidence, providing excellent visibility particularly when swinging toward the boom side of the cab. The LED options on all models expand the lighted area, providing crisp, clear lighting for improved visibility and safety. “For our new G-Series machines, we wanted to develop a machine that not only responds to the needs of our customers, but goes above and beyond the industry standards to provide operators with the comfort and productivity they need to get through long days,” said Dave McFarlane, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “The improvements help operators feel confident on the job site, allowing them to be more efficient and, ultimately, improving the operations’ bottom line.” The design on the G-Series machines features significant undercarriage improvements. The 2154G and 2156G models have been updated with larger rollers, while the 2654G and 2656G are available with an optional longer track, improving machine stability, increasing operator comfort, boosting machine lift capacity and extending lower roller life. Improvements to the boom, arm, mainframe and undercarriage increase the life of the structures. To simplify service, the G-Series

Dual-shaft shredder for wood and green waste

Meeting challenges

Ecosys choose Komptech

W

hen Pascal Frémin started his company Ecosys in 1993, he did so with a clear goal. He wanted business success to go hand-in-hand with responsibility for sustainability and the environment. It started with composting, and now the focus is on the production of renewable energy Ecosys is one of the big players in France when it comes to the treatment of green waste and woody biomass: the company has a solution for everything to do with the subject. That includes the production of compost in one of over 15 composting systems and the associated marketing of substrates and soil for gardening and landscaping. The company also has a modern machine park with shredders and screens just waiting to do contract work on French green cuttings. In addition to all this, in the last few years a new business area around woody biomass has come into being. Pascal Frémin considers it to have great potential, for him personally and also for the industry as a whole. “Right now we already do 40% of our business with biomass fuels, as against zero just four years ago. The market has grown incredibly fast, and I estimate it right now to be worth about €300 million. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it double again in the next five years.”

Market heading toward biomass This shift had already started to make itself known in 2005/2006. Frémin remembers: “We could tell that composting was gradually reaching saturation, and prices were starting to fall. At the same time, the term ‘biomass fuel’ i.e.

the production of renewable fuel from woody green cuttings started to make the rounds.” Frémin was confident that he holds all the trump cards. He had access to green cuttings, processing sites - often close to biomass power plants – and the necessary logistics and machinery.

Thinking big He wasn’t interested in small potatoes. He approached the large French energy producers Électricité de France (EDF) and Engie SA to offer his services as a just-intime supplier of organic fuels. Negotiations were successful but the start was delayed. “From 2008 to 2012 it was nearly impossible to get experience in processing. But then in 2012 all the big biomass generators in our region started operations almost simultaneously.” So he had to be fast. Frémin dug into the subject to get a detailed understanding of his customers’ process and needs. He undertook extensive trials to put what he had learned into practice with his machines. It quickly became clear that a three-fraction screen was the best solution for screening. Soon thereafter a Multistar L3 star screen was delivered by French sales partner Hantsch.

Solutions needed But there was a big problem at the front end of the process, the shredding/chipping. The highspeed shredder by a well-known German manufacturer, which had heretofore given good service for composting, was not able to deliver the desired output. Frémin recalls the situation: “From the beginning, it was not possible to make the process

8 International Forest Industries | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016

economical. We made too many fines, or rather, too little product from the input material. The machines were running flat-out, yet we were barely meeting our commitments. “And often customers would send back entire truckloads because the quality wasn’t up to par.” The manufacturer was unable to offer a solution, so it was clear to Frémin that he would have to look for an alternative.

Newcomer passes the test He invited manufacturers to a big test and used his newly acquired knowledge to assess the machines’ shred quality, throughput and sensitivity to contraries. One machine – the newest one – quickly took the lead. “The Axtor was clearly superior to the competition. No other machine let me make so much fuel from all the different feedstocks.” But before Frémin made his final decision, he wanted to see where the Axtor came from and get an idea of the company behind it. A visit to Komptech headquarters in Frohnleiten, Austria sealed the deal. Shortly thereafter Pascal Frémin signed an order for six Axtor 6010s in his office in Nantes.

“It would be odd if a new machine like the Axtor didn’t have a teething problem or two,” says Frémin from long experience. “But I accepted the risk as a kind of challenge. I knew what the machine could do and I knew that I could trust the people at Komptech and Hantsch. Working in close cooperation, we solved the issues step by step.” A solid relationship is important, because there is no lack of challenges. “Our strategy is to take lower value feedstocks like green cuttings, branches and shrub cuttings, and rootstocks, and turn them into higher value products,” says Frémin of his business model. At the product level he competes with the chips that have started to come onto the market in quantity, not least due to the warm winters in recent years. “That puts pressure on prices for chips and thus the amount we can get for our products, since customers get used to paying less for biomass fuel. That makes it all the more important for us to use clever processing techniques and efficient machines to keep the price difference and so our customers.” Pascal Frémin and Ecosys have ambitious goals. In 2020 the company wants to make 20 million euros in revenue with fuel from renewable sources. Important assets in this push will be the Axtor, Multistar star screens, and quality-boosting separators like the Stonefex and Hurrifex. Frémin looks certain to reach his goal of contributing to a more livable environment.

Tigercat goes bigger with 632E skidder The new Tigercat 632E skidder is claimed by Tigercat to be the most powerful, productive four-wheel skidder ever built. Several enhancements have been integrated into the new model, setting new productivity standards for timber extraction. The 632E is powered by the simple and reliable Tigercat FPT N67 engine which provides full emissions compliance for Tier 2 and Tier 4f along with excellent fuel economy. The Tier 4f engine delivers 212 kW (285 hp) at 2,200 rpm. The Tier 2 option delivers 215 kW (288 hp) at 2,100 rpm. It can be equipped with the largest grapple offered on any fourwheel skidder on the market. The larger 2,1 m² (23 ft²) option has a tip-to-tip opening of 3 860 mm (152 in). Complementing the higher horsepower and larger grapple, the hydraulic system and driveline have been extensively upgraded. Several components and structures have been upsized for improved durability. The 632E uses a larger main hydraulic pump and valves for faster operation and better multifunctioning. The hydraulic cylinders are larger allowing the machine to run pressures that are 10% lower while increasing performance by 10% on average.

Cylinder rod sizes have been increased by 25%. Load sensing control and a simplified steering circuit lead to more responsive and adjustable steering control. A newly enhanced EHS® transmission produces 11% more torque — with the same top speed as the previous generation of EHS. The new OB20 rear axle – specially designed for the 632E — provides 47% more torque capacity and nearly twice the life on all bearings. The service brakes and park brake are incorporated into the new axle. The axle mounting

has been redesigned to use four high-strength 30 mm (1.18 in) bolts and two 30 mm studs on each side mounted to a massive 77 mm (3 in) thick steel frame. The new design transfers the force to the skidder chassis and can better handle the higher torque load of the new axle and uprated EHS drive. Rear drive shafts have been increased in size to 8.5C from 7C. Operators will see additional improvements in the cab starting with the automatic, air-ride seat. A new instrument panel layout improves placement of electrical outlets and the electronic control

system display. Operators will enjoy finer joystick control of the travel speed. The new high visibility arch means a 10% improvement in visibility to the ground through the arch. LED lights, improved boom light location and a new arch light further enhance visibility to the grapple area.

Finland’s 2Q paperboard production increased by 4.8% According to Finnish Forest Industries Federation, Finland’s 2Q 2016 paperboard production totalled 810,000 tonnes, representing an increase of 4.8% from the corresponding period of the previous year, while pulp production grew 4.4% in the 2Q to a total of 1.9 million tones. Forest industry corporations produced no less than 8% more of softwood sawn timber in April-June than in

the corresponding period of 2015 and production grew to 3.1 million cubic metres. Paper production contracted 8.5% in the 2Q to a total of 1.6 million tonnes. Forest industry investments have started to grow, but this positive development can only continue in a competitive operating environment. The European Union is currently deliberating on several matters

The global timber price index increases up to 4.2% The Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) was up 4.2% in the 2Q/16 toUS$71.18/m3, the highest quarter-over-quarter increase since the 2Q/11. Sawlog prices increased in 16 of the 19 regions tracked by the Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ) and were generally higher in both the local currencies and in US dollar terms. The biggest price increases in dollar terms occurred in Russia, Brazil, Germany and British Columbia. The only regions that experienced lower log prices in the 2Q/16 were Chile, where lumber export markets weakened, and the US Northwest, where log export to Asia slowed down the first few months of the year and the domestic sawmills run at fairly low operating rates. During the first half of 2016, global trade of softwood logs was up about one percent as compared to the same period in 2015, according to estimates by the WRI. Almost 50% of globally traded logs are imported to countries in Asia (specifically China, South Koreaand

Japan) followed by Europe and North America. Asia’s share was down from 52% in 2015 because of reduced importation to China. The biggest change over the past ten years has been that the Nordic import share of the global log trade has fallen from almost 18% in 2005 to only nine percent in 2015, because the three Northern European countries have increased their domestic timber harvests to decrease the reliance on imported wood rawmaterial.

The major trade flows in 2015 were, in descending order: • New Zealand to China • Russia to China • US to China • US to Canada • Norway to Sweden The global log trade continued at a healthy pace in early 3Q/16 with shipped volumes generally being higher than the same time in 2015.

that have an impact on the forest-based sector. “Proposals regarding the European Union’s implementation of the Paris climate agreement were complemented by the Commission’s publication of emission-reduction obligations for sectors not covered by emissions trading. The 39% emission-reduction target imposed on Finland is very challenging. The possibility of taking full

advantage of sustainable annual harvesting opportunities must be ensured when drafting regulations concerning the climate and the environment. In addition, measures must be taken to minimise the risk of carbon leakage,” says Timo Jaatinen, Director General of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.

Two Rivers Lumber $65 million startup brings jobs to Alabama

Plans are underway for the startup of Two Rivers Lumber Co.’s first sawmill, a $65 million investment that will bring 55 jobs initially, and up to 95 jobs eventually, to west Alabama reports Woodworking Network. Two Rivers Lumber is a new operation started by area businessmen Jay McElroy, owner of McElroy Trucking, and Roy Geiger, owner of Sumter Timber. Construction is set to begin

January 2017, with the Demopolis, Alabama-based mill scheduled to begin production in September. When completed, the mill will have an annual capacity of 200 million board feet and produce all sizes of southern yellow pine dimensional lumber for sale throughout the United States. “We have a long family history in the area, with all our businesses being tied to the southern yellow

pine,” McElroy said. “We are very pleased to continue this tradition.” The mill’s name, Two Rivers, is derived from its location which is just south of where the Black Warrior and Tombigbee rivers come together, said the news release. “We are excited about building a new sawmill in west Alabama and what it will mean to local land owners as well as bringing quality manufacturing jobs to the area,” McElroy, added. “Planning began over a year ago and this project would not be possible without support from the City of Demopolis, the State of Alabama, and our lender, Alabama Ag Credit.” Bid Group will design and build the sawmill. Two Rivers Lumber will pay $1,000 a month to rent the land from the city; that amount will increase to $10,000 a month after five years. The company has a 40-year lease on the property, with an option to buy after 20 years, according to

westalabamawatchman.com. Indirect jobs in the forest products industry are also expected to be created to support the operation. “This investment from Two Rivers Lumber Co. will provide well-paying jobs to Alabama citizens and drive economic growth in Marengo County,” said Governor Robert Bentley. “Our partnership with the company perfectly aligns with the goals we’ve set to help rural Alabama,” he added. “The state-of-the-art sawmill being planned by Two Rivers Lumber Co. is precisely the kind of project we had in mind when the Legislature approved enhanced incentives for companies making investments and creating jobs in ‘Targeted Counties’ across Alabama,” said Greg Canfield, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.

West Fraser invests $33 million in expansion sawmill operations in South Carolina’s Newberry County West Fraser, a diversified wood products company, is expanding its Newberry County sawmill operations. The project is expected to bring $33 million in new capital investment, as South Carolina Department of Commerce reports. Since 2007, the company has invested millions to modernize the

HewSaw is once again revolutionizing the primary breakdown sector of the sawmill industry with the introduction of their latest technology - dx sawing. Aimed at maximizing speed, recovery, efficiency and throughput, dx sawing will be a game changer for many sawmills. With HewSaw’s dx sawing, the saws are cutting through the cant in two stages instead of one, allowing for a substantially reduced depth of cut with each saw. For sawmills using this technology, this can result in higher feed speeds with smaller diameter saws and thinner kerfs. • more production volume in a shift • higher recovery or yield from each log • the possibility to run for longer periods before saw and knife changes • improved surface quality and exceptional saw deviation HewSaw is the only primary breakdown producer that can offer this technology and the concept and technology are patent pending worldwide.

Voma and Westas Pihlava invest in timber kilns Valutec has won contracts to supply timber kilns to two sawmills in western Finland with a distinguished heritage, namely Voma Oy and Westas Pihlava. The mills are investing in three batch kilns and one FB continuous kiln, with kiln commissioning planned for early 2017 “Valutec is an experienced supplier. This investment will give us access to proven solutions combined with the latest technology,” says Pekka Luoma, CEO of Voma Oy. The mill is situated near Parkano, Finland and was operated under the previous owner as Marjolahden Saha until production at the mill ceased in 2008. Luoman, a company specializing in garden structures, has resumed operations at the mill. The company is now expanding its efforts by investing in three batch kilns, which are equipped with pressure frames and are designed to dry center cut pine in dimensions ranging from 32 to 50 millimeters. The total capacity is approximately 20,000 cubic meters

per year. “It’s also important to us that Valutec provide on-site service in Finland,” explains Pekka. The second contract secured over the summer was with the Westas sawmill Pihlava, not far from Pori, about an hour’s drive from Parkano and Voma. “Pihlava chose an FB continuous kiln with a capacity of about 55,000 cubic meters per year. Like with Voma, we aim to have the kiln up and running in January of next year,” says Mikko Pitkänen, General Manager at Valutec OY. The contract with Westas also included Valutec’s Valmatics control system for ten of the

sawmill’s existing kilns. For about three years now, the sawmill and Raunio are part of the relatively young company Westas Group, which is owned by CEO Pekka Kopra and A. Ahlström Kiinteistöt Oy. “Both Pihlava and Voma have a long history and we appreciate the chance contribute to their continued development. An investment in kiln equipment is always long-term, and is also a matter of constantly refining the way of working. Here in particular, Valmatics is a powerful tool,” explains Mikko Pitkänen.

Joescan’s new js-25 x6b scan head provides high-density scanning on carriage headrigs

JoeScan, Inc., a leading manufacturer of 3-D laser scan heads for sawmills, released the newest scan head in its JS-25 X-Series, the JS-25 X6B at TP&EE Portland. The JS-25 X6B is a highperformance, six-laser scanner, specifically designed for highdensity, snapshot-scanning of logs on carriage headrigs. Each JS-25 X6B scan head can

be mounted end-to-end to scan any length of log on six-inch spacing. The JS-25 X6B was designed to make it easy for optimizers and sawmills to upgrade obsolete carriage scanning systems, often reusing the existing scan frame. “Because of our dedication to sawmills, we felt it was important to give sawmills a better option for upgrading obsolete carriage scanning hardware. The JS-25 X6B is an easy upgrade that provides higher scan rates, double the scan density, and is based on the sawmill-proven reliability of the JS25 platform,” says Joey Nelson, the president and founder of JoeScan. The JS-25 X6B requires only 24VDC and an Ethernet connection for operation. The scanner’s Ethernet interface allows the

optimizer to communicate directly with the scanner without special hardware. “The JS-25 X6B’s built-in profile processing eliminates the need for large numbers of PCs to process the image data, resulting in a simpler, more reliable system,” explains Nelson. JoeScan’s scan heads have been made for sawmills since the company introduced its first scanner in 2002. “JoeScan is committed to the sawmill industry,” says Nelson. “We stand behind our products to make sure our scanners are a good long-term investment for sawmills. That’s why every scanner model is backed by a 5-year warranty and a 10-year support life policy to protect against obsolescence,” concludes Nelson.

sawmilling. X-ray scanners, such as those produced by Microtec, are a prime example of this. The same is true of automatic board edging systems, such as the latest edging lines by Primultini. Then, of course, there are specialists like PAUL Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG, whose optimised docking saws maximize output and minimize trim waste. There is always some degree of waste, of course, and so there is growing interest in recycling systems. For example, Vecoplan and Urbas will be showcasing their solutions for processing sawmill residues into valuable products and biofuels. Another exciting option in the sawmill efficiency game relates to high-tech timber kilns of the type showcased by Mühlböck and Eberl. These kilns enable sawmill operators to get high-quality timber to market faster and more easily than ever before. Another key development is that more and more sawmill companies are diversifying their portfolios. Increasingly, they are supplementing their lumber

offerings with processed, valueadded timber products. LIGNA has this area covered as well, with an extensive array of products ranging from small “plug & play” planing solutions to the large-scale fingerjointing plants developed by the Weinig Group. In 2017, the LIGNA show’s revamped thematic layout will make it much easier for visitors to find what they are looking for. Products and solutions for all stages of the sawmill value chain will be located under one roof, in Hall 25, while the displays of mobile sawmill technology will be located on the open-air site. Meanwhile, the latest technologies for processing lumber into construction materials such as structural laminated timber and plywood will be on show in the neighboring Hall 27.

LUMBER OPERATION PROCESSING FOCUS – Lucidyne NEWS

Hampton Lumber installs Lucidyne’s GradeScan

Lucidyne’s patented TrueQ® insures boards are matched with their correct GradeScan solution

Hampton asked that Lucidyne automate the process and integrate that upgrade into existing controls during the GradeScan installation. Using the flexibility of the GradeScan System, Lucidyne created a special grade rule and programming for materials handling. With GradeScan in place, the product is now seamlessly integrated into the scanning and optimization system. Manpower cost reductions and improved grading accuracy increase the profit margin of this product, further boosting GradeScan’s benefits for Hampton income and ROI.

Hampton also chose to add Lucidyne’s Grade-VU projector system for their installation. Grade-VU projects GradeScan’s final solution directly onto each board just seconds after it leaves the planer. With our patentpending design, Grade-VU keeps the projected image on the board, moving with it even if the board bounces or moves on the chain. Additionally, the user has several options for configuring the projected image. It can be shown as actual character marks, as abbreviated text, or as an indication of particularly specified

I

nstallation of the Lucidyne GradeScan System at Hampton’s Willamina, Oregon mill marks another advance in resource management and productivity at that facility. Volatility of the lumber market has resulted in mill closures throughout the Northwest, but Hampton continues to be a vital presence in the industry. Their new Lucidyne GradeScan integrated to the mill’s existing control system maximizing Hampton’s fiber and value recovery, improving their bottom line and holding their strong position. Hampton came to Lucidyne with optimization requirements for their mill runs of both green and dry Douglas Fir in lengths up to 28 feet running at speeds up to 4,000 feet per minute. Given GradeScan’s proven record of success grading Douglas Fir lumber, Hampton chose to go with Lucidyne. Hampton also had a unique need to be met. In an unusual trimming situation, the mill’s equipment was not set up to automatically process one of their products. This sawing limitation put costly demands on mill personnel to manually provide special trimming solutions.

characteristics. Grade-VU’s projected images give Hampton tools that can be used in a number of ways: for check-grading, to identify boards with specific characteristics, to evaluate new product opportunities or to perform Quality Control functions. The Hampton installation also launched Lucidyne’s new Blade Server System which replaces the bank of PCs used in earlier systems. Coupled with a

10-gigabyte network backbone that eliminates most cables, the Blade Servers provide expanded computing capability while fitting into a single 19” rack that minimizes space requirements. This new design is now standard on all of Lucidyne’s GradeScan systems, and will also be used on the newly introduced ChopScan System. In addition to GradeScan, Lucidyne offers ChopScan, a sister scanning system designed

GradeScan is easily maintained by Hampton’s mill personnel

specifically for cut-up mills. ChopScan joins Lucidyne’s product line, Sorter Controls, Specialty Controls and Integration as well as Lucidyne’s industry-standard grade mark reader, the GMR, which also has a powerful new upgrade. The GMR M5’s added features include: Multiple Instruction and Color Recognition capabilities for a full 23-Character symbol set, multiple symbols per board, color symbol detection, external computer, extended system diagnostics and internet update capabilities. Lucidyne’s reputation for quality, accuracy, payback and partnering with customers played heavily in Hampton’s decision to choose GradeScan.

Lucidyne was founded in 1985 in Corvallis, Oregon and maintains its Ownership and Management with a veteran and expanding team of Engineers, Scientists, System Designers, Fabricators, Service and Business professionals.

Hampton Affiliates Hampton Affiliates, a Northwestbased forest products company, owns and operates eight sawmills located in the states of Oregon and Washington and the Canadian Province of British Columbia. Annual production capacity is currently in excess of 2 billion board feet, making Hampton one of the largest softwood lumber manufacturers, and a market leader in the retail, distributor, industrial, and export markets.

Wood-Mizer UK presents new products at APF 2016 Wood-Mizer UK had two exciting new developments to show to the industry at APF 2016. Two new edgers – the EG250 and EG350 – were on display and proved popular with visitors to the stand. Within hours of the show opening the EG350, which was making its UK debut, had been sold to a customer who was impressed

M

ore businesses are starting to realise the value of wood and looking for ways to exploit it using a sawmill. That’s the view of Wood-Mizer UK’s Dave Biggs who is pleased to see a rise in the value and recognition of timber from trees. Huge domestic demand for wood-burning stoves and a focus on industrial-scale biomass boilers – caused by the introduction of subsidies under the Renewable Heat Incentive – has seen the firewood market expand considerably in the past three years. But Biggs says that with sales of sawmills that he and his colleagues have been involved in over the past 12 months, there has been an emerging trend. “I’m pleased to see that some of our customers this year are making investments to try and produce more from the trees they are handling,” he said. “If you look at some of the

wood that’s been taken for burning in the past few years, it’s a real shame. My view is that there’s some really nice stuff in the heart of these trees which people can do something great with.” Biggs notes that there were a number of examples of customers – mainly tree surgeons – in England and Scotland who have bought machines such as the LT15 or LT20 to create a diversified income stream. Speaking at APF 2016, the UK’s biennial leading forestry event, Biggs said: “For an entry level professional machine, most tree surgeons go for an LT15 because nine times out of ten they already have something to move the timber around so they can have an LT15 set up in their yard for about £6,000 and can start processing timber and producing products that people want.”

Eye-catching edgers attract instant attention At the industrial end of production,

with the large capacity twin-blade edger. “The EG350 has a maximum cutting thickness of 100mm which is something that needed to happen in the UK market,” states Biggs, who added that the machine comes with two 8kW electric motors. The larger of the two machines slots in above the EG300 and below the EG400 in terms of price point, while the EG250, with a maximum cutting thickness of 60mm, offers a new entry-level solution. “The EG250 has manual operation and manual adjustment at a cheaper price point,” Biggs said.

Vortex blades leave little trace Efficiency is the watchword in any modern business, and the professional sawmilling industry

is always keen to see new product development that improves quality and efficiency in equal measure. “Vortex blades are a break from the norm because this new design is a departure from the traditional straight-cut silver tooth profile,” Mr Biggs explained. “What customers will get really excited about is that it leaves next

to no sawdust. We put them on an LT40 at APF to demonstrate their performance and the results were really impressive. “The current design is for a softwood profile and we see the gains coming for our customers who have multiple heads cutting six or four planks at a time. Sawdust left from a regular blade on the left. On the right, the surface after cutt “If you are cutting them and you have to clear them off before they get treated you are spending time getting them cleaned down. But with these new blades, the amount of sawdust left is hardly worth talking about.” The blades, manufactured in the USA, are expected to be available from Wood-Mizer UK imminently. The sawmill technology of the

The revolutionary four arbour dx sawing process from HewSaw offers numerous benefits for modern sawmills, including maximizing speed and recovery. HewSaw is once again revolutionizing the primary breakdown sector of the sawmill industry with the introduction of their latest technology - dx sawing. Aimed at maximizing speed, recovery, efficiency and throughput, dx sawing will be a game changer for many sawmills. “When we equip our HewSaw sawing machines and sawlines with this patent pending technology, we can provide our customers with the ability to run larger diameter logs at faster speeds for longer periods of time, and we can reduce our saw kerf, increasing recovery and yield from each log,” explains HewSaw’s chief engineer, Raimo Karjalainen. The basic principle behind dx sawing is to replace the standard double arbour sawing technique

currently used by HewSaw with a four arbour system. The first set of arbours will house the saws for an initial or pilot cut into the cant, while the second set of arbours will house a set of saws that will finish the cut, just as it is in existing HewSaw sawing technology. This works well with HewSaw’s philosophy of centre line sawing where all processing is calculated and aligned to the centre line of the HewSaw machine.

HewSaw is the only primary breakdown producer that can offer this technology In a typical HewSaw dx sawing scenario, the log is presented in the usual way to the HewSaw scanning conveyor, and following scanning, it is then positioned for the HewSaw with the company’s highly accurate log positioner followed by four sided chipping. The next step is where it gets interesting, as the first set of saws penetrates part way into the cant, making the preliminary or initial cut. Then downstream is a second set of saws on a second set of arbours, which completes the sawing process. This is combined with the edging of sideboards to produce the highest efficiency possible in log breakdown.

This technology will work with most types of HewSaw machines from the company’s newer model smaller machines with optimized edging through to their state-of-the-art multi-unit sawlines that can take multiple edged sideboards at each machine centre. It will also work with HewSaw’s CRS units (splitter saws), and it can be used with both batch feeding and scan-n-set applications.

So what are the advantages of HewSaw dx sawing? Because the saws are not cutting all the way through the cant in a single cut, the depth of cut is substantially reduced, meaning sawmills using this technology can run at higher speeds with smaller diameter saws and thinner kerfs. This is especially beneficial with larger logs or cants. • more production volume in a shift • same production volume with shorter shifts • higher recovery or yield from each log • improved surface quality and exceptional saw deviation • the possibility to run for longer periods before saw and knife changes

HewSaw’s engineering department developed this new technology at the company’s headquarters in Mäntyharju, Finland. It has been tested and proven in sawmills in Finland and the USA and is now being introduced to HewSaw’s markets worldwide.

With HewSaw dx sawing, the saws are cutting through the cant in two stages, resulting in a reduced depth of cut.

HewSaw is the only primary breakdown producer that can offer this technology and the concept and technology are patent pending worldwide. With its factory and head office in Mäntyharju, Finland, HewSaw is a family-owned company that has been in business for over 50 years. Recognized for its innovation and leadership in developing new technology for the sawmill business, HewSaw has now expanded its customer base to well over 30 countries on six continents. In addition to the company’s operations in Finland, they also have offices and warehouses in Canada, USA, Australia, South Africa, Germany and

Sweden. In total, HewSaw employs over 200 people worldwide and they have delivered over 400 sawing machines in the past five decades.

Operation Focus – Microtec

Optimization standards of Goldeneye 900 boost both recovery and value

Brazil’s industry leader upgrades with Springer and Microtec technology Since 1952, Berneck has been a major player in Brazil’s wood processing industry. With its operations in Araucaria, Brasnorte and Curitibanos, the company is rated as the most modern saw and planner mill in the country and ranks among the global technological leaders. To increase the productivity and lead the global market, the planer mill in Curitibanos has been recently equipped with the Goldeneye 900 transverse scanner by Microtec, the first of its kind in South America. All mechanical parts were installed by Springer, a leading sawmilling provider of conveyor systems for lumber handling

erneck disposes of more than 63,000 hectares of land for forests in the regions of Paraná and Santa Catarina. The raw material of the sawn products is specially managed and selected by Berneck, from the preparation of seedlings, planting and harvesting up to the final processing. Berneck produces 4 million pine tree sprouts per year, from which 3.5 million trees are planted for industrial use. The processed wood species, Pinus Taeda, has a standard moisture content from 8 to 12%, and is classified in accordance with the requirements for the different final uses such as: packaging, furniture, civil construction and wood framing for exportation to big markets like China. At the headquarters in Araucaria, Paranà, the company produces a range of products

LUMBER PROCESSING High Density Fiberboards also made from bonded and compacted wood fibers and covered on both sides with decorative films. The industrial unit in Brasnorte, in the state of Mato Grosso, produces BERTeak Brazil Edge Glue Panels and BERDeck – Teak Decking. The new production unit in Curitibanos, in the state of Santa Catarina, is a planer mill that also produces MDF. In future it will be replaced by a new sawmill, an MDP factory, and an additional line for BP laminate and an impregnation line. “Our aim is to produce high quality products to stay competitive in the market and to satisfy the customer’s needs by providing a wide range of products. That is why we invested in new technology to obtain an overall control of our production. The very good partnership with Microtec and Springer convinced us that we made the right decision”, comments Fernando Gnoatto, General Manager Lumber division & International Sales. In order to increase production capacity in the dry-sorter and planer line for quality grading of boards at the mill in Curitibanos, Berneck decided to invest in new software and machinery products engineered in cooperation with Springer and Microtec. While Microtec delivered all lumber quality scanning and optimization devices, as well as PLC control, Springer planned the mechanical components. Springer provided a line feed with a double tilt hoist system, a servo lug loader with

special hold down belt, a trimmer, a tray sorter for planned lumber, a stacker with multi-cross-cut and double lift, a packaging system with foil dispenser, a Pascal press and a strapper. With a feeding speed up to 1.8 m/sec in transversal feeding that is max. 165 boards per minute at 640 mm (25 inch) lug space, this installation is the fastest and most modern planer mill in South America. The heart of this new industrial unit in Curitibanos is Goldeneye 900 Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner in transverse feeding for dry sorting. The Goldeneye 900 series combines the advantages of sensing technologies with robust industrial design to provide constant, predictable grading performance during the production of lumber products, maximizing fiber value recovery. The Goldeneye 900 scans the boards in a single scan frame from top and bottom with 4-side visual inspection including dimension, scatter and grain deviation and color. The scanning is carried out with no board turner, which enables a fluent and smooth production process. Goldeneye 900 determines the dimension and the overall quality of the boards by recognizing cup, bow, twist and spring. The properties of the surface such as wane edge, damage on edge, lack of material on the top/bottom face and splits, checks, knots, knottiness, bark pockets and resin pockets, visual pith as well as stain are defects recognized by the Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner.

First Viscan Plus in Brazil. Equipped with X-ray, it determines the density of all boards with a measurement repeat accuracy of over 99%

Ruggedness, speed and measurement precision are key for high performance planer mills manufacturing a large variety of final products. We have made sure that our customers have no need to compromise in terms of either throughput or reliability, and certainly not in terms of function. Federico Giudiceandrea, CEO Microtec

Right after the Goldeneye 900 scanner, a trimmer station with two saws on either side of the board, cuts the boards to the final length for packaging. “The great advantage of the production with Goldeneye 900 is to perform the measuring and quality selection in transverse feeding. This new technology provides reliable results even at a high throughput speed increasing our added value”, comments Fernando Gnoatto. The planer line also features an inline moisture meter M3 Scan that determines the board’s moisture to check if the degree of moisture content is within the thresholds for transversal feeding. The rapid growth of the Taeda Pine in Brazil leads to a varying moisture content degree over the whole length of the board. As a result, the two moisture-measuring tracks will be upgraded to four measuring tracks in order to determine the most accurate average moisture content. The operator can easily calibrate

the M3 Scan when it is necessary to produce boards or trims of different dimensions. All these scanning devices collect important data for the further processing. The new concept of the installation comes with the advantage that all the measuring devices work in transversal feeding. Immediately after the Goldeneye 900 Scanner there is the first Microtec Viscan Strength Grader in Brazil equipped with an X-ray, which determines the density of the boards and predicts their strength. Boards are automatically classified into strength classes and transported to the right bins. The sorting process is carried out by Variosort Lumber Sorter, the fully automated Microtec software that supervises sorting, packaging and wrapping of the boards. Variosort’s data interface communicates with Viscan Strength Grader, Microtec Moisture Meter as well as the Multi-Sensor Quality Scanner

Shifting & Sorting – USNR

Expert handling

Cut-n-two boards merge into the same lug space once again at the top, prior to entering the sorter. At the sorter, the clear line cut-n-two boards are diverted into the first sort bins along the clear line. All the full-length boards and lumber line cut-n-two boards are diverted into downstream bins along the lumber line

A revolutionary configuration from USNR has delivered big gains in performance

U

SNR recently developed a new process for handling cut-n-two lumber that was implemented as part of a recent project. Along with a new planer mill trim/sort/stack line, USNR introduced a cut-n-two configuration that does not require skipping a lug. This allows the mill to expand its range of products, put more wood in the sorter without a throughput penalty, and without increasing planer speed or labour.

Cut-n-two ‌ no skip-a-lug A conventional system demands that for every board that is cut-ntwo, a lug space must be created to accept one half of the board. That requires the line to run faster to handle the additional boards that are produced. This new design allows the line to run at a consistent speed while cutting longer products in two. After the board is cut in half at the trimmer, both halves remain in the same lug space. The far

end half of the cut-n-two board is diverted up an elevator where it is even ended to the clear line. Meanwhile, the near end board remains on the lower deck and even ended to the lumber line, it travels up an incline and the two boards are merged again into the same lug space at the top, just prior to entering the sorter. At the sorter, the clear line cutn-two boards are diverted into the first sort bins along the clear line. All the full length boards and lumber line cut-n-two boards are diverted into downstream bins

The improvements implemented at this mill removed significant bottlenecks, allowed it to expand its range of products, and reduce its operating hours Clear-line boards are even ended at the top of the elevator. along the lumber line. Once the clear line cut-in-two boards reach the stacker infeed, a long rollcase shifts them to the stacker lumber line for stacking.

Improving performance This configuration provides an opportunity for mills to make two-short length boards from one lower value long-length board, without sacrificing line speeds or throughput volumes. The improvements implemented at this mill removed significant bottlenecks, allowed it to expand its range of products, and reduce its operating hours. Other configurations similar to this concept have subsequently been developed, such as sideby-side or tandem bins, where each half of a cut-n-two board goes into a tandem bin fitted with independent bin floors

The unique cut-n-two handling is achieved by splitting the flow via an elevator

USNR recently announced it had sold its 100th Multi-Track Fence since the product was launched in 2010. From BC to Quebec, Texas to Florida, Washington to South Carolina, Uruguay to New Zealand and Sweden, customers are raving about the Multi-Track Fence, its accuracy, its speed and agility, and

its economical electric operation. What is the secret of this fence’s global success? Its inspired design incorporates the best features and eliminates the failings of many other designs. The Multi-Track Fence uses moving board bumpers to position the boards, and this allows several lug spaces for

boards to come to the bumpers and settle into a fixed setback location prior to leaving the positioning system to be trimmed. The result is highly accurate, infinite board positioning, and often higher speeds.

Sawmill Optimisation – Carbotech

Major upgrade to iconic lug loader Carbotech has been in the workshop for hours on end improving a lug loader already loved by the industry and, judging on first glance, all the hard work has paid off

F

or the past 20 years, Carbotech’s electric and pneumatic lug loader has received strong market support. The rotary lug loader uses pneumatic rotors to activate a variety of clamps – a design that is user friendly free of hydraulics. Based on that well-proven mechanical technology, Carbotech has invested heavily in R&D to deliver what it considers a “revolutionary” upgrade focused on skew control. Thanks to Cognex reading capacity, Carbotech has modified its lug loader operation so all clamps, all stop gates and all wheels are activated independently – the infeed lengths of timber alone will dictate witch clamps and stop gates need to be activated. The new system is supported by the latest version of M12 connectors to ensure the quickest and most reliable Ethernet communication to an integrated PLC on that Lug loader 2.0.

Backlog control ensures efficiency In addition to Carbotech’s clamping and communication technology, the backlog control management is 34 International Forest Industries | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016

Sawmill Optimisation probably one of the most important consideration when attempting to achieve decent efficiency. Understanding that, Carbotech developed (patent pending) a new system using near-end and far-end independent drives controlled by ceiling cameras and lasers. Depending on the desired speed and length variations, Carbotech’s skew control system will use 6 VFD drives over three transfers to regulate backlog pressure, width detections and skew control.

Listening to our customers Over the past few years, the North American market has forced the manufacturer to innovate towards automatization and speed. The main focus has been to take existing equipment and upgrade it for maximum automation and reliability when operating at more than 260 lugs/minutes at the planer mill or more than 220 lugs/ minute at the sawmill. Labour reduction in parallel with production increases were the persuasive payback arguments and how Carbotech came to develop a fully-automatic, electric, high-speed continuous tilt hoist; automatic stick and dunnage recuperation system; Cognex skew and flow control (avoiding operator manipulation); operatorfree lug loader; sorter management HALCO AD:Layout 3/8/10 controlled by the stacker3operator;

fully-automatic sawmill stick system with high speed stackers; and many more. “A great first step in terms of innovation is customer feedback and site operators’ ideas,” the manufacturer said. “Operators and site superintendents are the only ones who work the equipment full time. There is no better feedback in terms of on-the-fly innovations that could be completed on equipment or operational upgrades justified by specific production experience. “Carbotech’s focus is to maintain a very close relationship with customers so we can find out, if needed, upgrades that could be brought to existing or future Carbotech’s equipment.”

Trading on a name Carbotech specializes in maximizing production operations and efficiency for high-speed sawmill and planer mill lumber handling. Working continually to develop new ideas and patents, Carbotech is a well-regarded partner in this market. The company has an excellent workforce of 120 employees that is relied upon “no matter what”. The mission over the past 30 years has focused on the following four principles:

Flexibility meets power Harvester Heads The ability to deliver the right product to the mill and execute accurately on contract obligations, often comes down to the functionality of the harvester head

F

lexibility and relative power are the themes of this year’s review of harvester head technology. Not so much flexibility within one single unit but flexibility in range, particularly from the major suppliers. Meanwhile, niche suppliers continued to build on their reputations for delivering excellence in specific sub-sectors of the industry. Large manufacturers Satco, Komatsu, Ponsse, Log Max, Tigercat and John Deere all pushed additions to their existing ranges, which already cover final felling heads down to highly manoeuvrable thinning units. Satco was focused on upgrades to its durable, high-performing harvesting attachments, which is said were designed and built for big, heavy wood. Komatsu was keen to highlight three additions to its range – the C283 (sturdy head designed for big trees), C123 (productive and reliable) and S82 (nimble and light, compact yet

strong). The new H8HD harvester head has been added to the Ponsse range specifically to tackle big timber in demanding conditions. Log Max has added two powerful and manoeuvrable thinning heads to an already extensive range, while John Deere’s H270 Series II, H413 and H415 heads cater for operators looking for manoeuvrability in thinnings through to heavy duty jobs requiring stamina extreme durability. Tigercat has continued to do what it does best and delivered yet more enhancements to basic productivity and reliability. Smaller supplier, Hakmet, has improved its 400 and 1000 units, which are powerful for their size. The heads prioritise easy operation with an automatic stroke that allows delimbing with a one-button function. Meanwhile, fellow junior manufacturer, Konrad, said its Woody harvester head combines the advantages of the Woody processor head and the additional capacity of felling standing trees. Caterpillar sells

and supports the full line of Satco harvesting attachments for cutto-length processing operations – robust attachments that fell and process trees at the stump or roadside. Satco, with over 30 years in the forestry industry and headquartered in New Zealand, designs and manufactures a wide range of attachments built for rugged logging conditions around the world. The company is known for its durable, high-performing harvesting attachments that are designed and built for big, heavy wood..

This year, Log Max has introduced two new heads, the 3000T and 4000T

Log Max T-series The Log Max 3000T and 4000T are designed for thinning operations. The 3000T is best suited to harvesters in the 10-14 t class and the 4000T for 13-20 t units. Both

The NEW Logmax 4000T

heads benefit from major updates to the frame geometry (upper frame and saw box), improvements in hydraulic layout and flow and last, but certainly not least, a new saw unit; the Log Max True-Cut. ORFS hose connector runs throughout the head including the connections to the carrier. The top part of the frame has been moved forward in order reduce friction against the ‘chest’ of the head and clogging of bark in the measuring wheel housing. A replaceable wear plate is located on the top part of the frame. The centre of the saw has been moved back and outwards for a neat geometry. The saw bar movement passes from 96° to 90° enabling faster-sawing cycle. By changing the position and length of the cylinder, the saw bar

performs a larger arc, which leads to an increased sawing resolution therefore better control. A damped adjustable mechanical stop has been added in the saw box as well as a bolted protection cover to ease the replacement of hoses for saw bar feeding, colour marking and find end. On the 3000T, the mounting bracket for the lower knife as been improved and the corresponding cylinder has also been appropriately updated to increase the lifting power of the bottom knife. The bottom delimbing knife of the 4000T as been totally redesigned to achieve a minimum delimbing diameter of 64 mm (4000B 104 mm, 5000D 108 mm). The new feed rollers are mounted directly on the motors so no more need for spacers. By eliminating the banjo couplings,

rerouting hoses and updating the hydraulic blocks, these heads have a better hydraulic flow and higher flexibility. The Log Max 3000T and 4000T feature the first generation 318 True-Cut and 218 True-Cut. Both have a 19cc motor, though the 318 has automatic chain tensioning and

the 218 has manual tensioning. The key component of the True-Cut system is the intelligent saw motor with integrated valving solutions for saw motor speed and saw bar control. By continuously sensing the motor speed and adjusting the saw-bar feed rate accordingly, the True-Cut maintains an almost constant chain speed of 40 m/s throughout the cutting cycle. This yields an impressive cutting performance; the TrueCut is up to 35% faster than conventional saw units. By locating the valve for motor speed control inside the motor it is able to react instantly to changes

in motor speed and practically eliminate any over-revving that is seen in a conventional saw unit. Not only does this reduce the stress on the motor, it also provides a safer work environment by reducing the risk of chain shots. The True-Cut is optimised at the factory and should not need any further setting changes in the field. The latest version of the Poclain MSE02 398cc motor allows the 4000T to reach 5.1 m/s of feeding speed. Both heads come equipped with Active Friction Control and can be mounted with an optional accumulation kit (multi-stemming).

The SAT318T is known for its high tractive power

Caterpillar is the exclusive Satco distributor in the United States, Canada and globally except Australia, New Zealand and Brazil. Through Cat dealers worldwide, Caterpillar provides support and stocks genuine service and maintenance parts for the complete line of Satco heads. All products are backed by Caterpillar warranties. The robust Satco harvesting heads are built with high-grade materials and feature leading-edge

technology. Depending on the model, they feature two or three feed rollers. Attachments are dangle heads, providing 340° or 360° (continuous) rotation. Generally, dangle heads reduce some of the stress on the carrier and boom since they swing freely. Satco manufactures a complete line of attachments for various applications. For example, the SAT214 would be a good choice for harvesting small diameter timber; it features four delimbing arms to easily handle ‘limby’ timber. Loggers working predominantly in

Satco heads are known as durable, high-performing harvesting attachments hardwood or crooked timber may prefer the SAT318T, known for its high tractive power. In a region of tall timber producing long, heavy logs, the SAT323T would be a good application. It features heavyduty pistol roller drives and larger roller arm cylinders. The SAT323T also features the Satco ‘Tri-Knife’ system, which improves measuring because it holds the tree better than two single knives; the system is more like a grapple, which makes the SAT323T more adept at picking a log out of a pile and re-stacking cut logs. Satco heads for cut-to-length felling and processing range from a weight of 2,618 lb (1,190 kg) with a maximum cutting diameter of 25 in (635 mm) to 8,500 lb (3,850 kg) and a cutting diameter of 32 in (800 mm). The company also offers felling and debarking attachments. All heads are designed to be matched with Cat Forestry Machines, Cat Track Feller

With the ‘Hose-ThroughCentre’ system, hydraulic hoses are configured through the centre of the boom linkage attachment system to encase and protect the hoses. In addition, the hoses are routed through the centre line of the pins, which means the connecting hoses can be made as short as possible. The system eliminates over-bending and rubbing of the hoses, which can cause premature failure. The ‘Tri-Knife’ system is a unique grapple type design for the delimbing knives featured on the SAT323 and SAT325 head families. The system enables the head to hold the log straight during processing for best alignment of the measurement wheel. The Satco ‘Dead-Lock’ pin retention system incorporates large pin sizes and adds strength to the chassis. It locks the knife and roller arm pins in place to provide increased structural support along with improved bushing life and extended service intervals. Oversized components provide powerful, durable, reliable performance. Drive roll motors have enlarged bearings for high radial load capability and reinforced shafts to withstand high torques. Main valves are rated at 6,100 PSI (420 bar) and can easily handle carrier pressures. Roller arm pins are 3+ in (80 mm.) The heavy duty 3/4-in main saw system features a 45 cc saw motor and large diameter bearing for smooth and reliable felling and bucking of large diameter trees. Satco provides control systems to meet the requirements of all applications, a simplified system with ‘go to logic’ that can even operate the head without the monitor, and another system that offers more advanced bucking optimization and optional mapping and monitoring capabilities. Satco harvesting heads deliver performance and reliability that loggers require in demanding conditions. They provide loggers with a powerful tool that will keep them working productively and fully supported by the Cat dealer network.

Komatsu Forest has a wide range of harvesting heads in its product line up. The newest additions are the three new harvesting heads Komatsu C283, Komatsu C123 and Komatsu S82. The Komatsu C283 is a sturdy head designed for big trees. This head is the largest in Komatsu’s head line-up with a maximum opening of 800 mm. It is a robust head, suitable for final logging, as well as for selection cutting and processing pre felled trees. The head is intended primarily for the American, South American and Australian markets and is designed for mounting on a forestry excavator, 27 t or larger, or a tracked forest machine. The head features a threewheel feed system, which means that the stem is both fed and lifted by the powerful feed rollers. The body of the head is fitted with an additional feed roller that helps reduce friction and contributes to even greater feed force and feed speed. Komatsu C283 has a powerful saw and is equipped with cutting control, which ensures a wellcontrolled cutting process. The head can also be equipped with a top saw. There are three delimbing knives on the standard model, two moving and one fixed front delimbing knife. It’s optional to fit two additional delimbing knives, mounted in the rear section of the head, one hydraulically controlled and the other fixed to the chassis. The length-measuring wheel

offers high precision and quality, sitting well protected in the body of the head. The measuring wheel is controlled by a unique hydraulic cylinder, designed to follow the stem as closely as possible. The result is highly accurate length measurement. The C283 is equipped with ORFS couplings to minimize leakage. The new Komatsu C123, is a productive and reliable head. It has an effective feed to ensure high productivity. With its unique feed roller design, the head’s gripping force can be kept low with retained feed force and low energy consumption. The feed roller design also ensures high-quality measuring. With cast delimbing knives, the head provides maximum durability, high lifting capacity, and firm stem holding. The C123 is a versatile harvesting head and is a good choice for steep terrain with its robust frame design and extralarge tilt angle. C123 is equipped with Constant Cut. This ensures that a steady, optimal speed of 130 ft/s (40 m/s) can be maintained throughout

the entire cutting cycle. This means there is never any risk of over speeding the saw motor or the chain. Thereby increasing productivity and minimizing risk of splitting saw logs. The option Eco-GLS is a chain and bar lubrication system where the lubricant has been changed from oil to grease. The system has an adaptive control of the amount of grease that will be pumped to the bar and chain. That means that the Maxi-system makes sure that enough volume of grease will be fed to the bar. Grease offers better surface adhesion than oil, which means it more easily remains on the bar and chain. When the oil is thrown from the chain, it creates an oil mist that soils the machine, which can lead to soiled windows, clogged cooling units and more. The Eco-GLS is minimizing both consumption and waste. It is beneficiary both for the cost of ownership and the environment, and means less downtime to clean windows and coolers. The system is designed The Komatsu C123 is a versatile head

to use an environmentally friendly grease with less environmental impact. The ECO-GLS can be ordered to all C-style Komatsu heads. The new Komatsu S82 is a two-wheel drive head. It is nimble and light, compact yet strong, a combination of characteristics that makes it an effective choice for demanding thinning assignments in dense stands. One of the reasons for its high productivity is the two-wheel feed that allows the stem to rotate in the head, even those that are forked or very crooked. Another function that contributes to high productivity is Flex Friction Control, which senses the stem’s position relative to the frame and adjusts the knife pressure accordingly. The Komatsu S82 also offers easy servicing and maintenance, smart hose routing. In order to improve safety and performance the S82 is equipped with the cutting unit Constant Cut. This is just an example of features that helps minimize unplanned downtime and increase productivity. The head can be equipped with the option 4-point diameter system, for even greater measurement accuracy. Komatsu Forest has also launched an upgraded multi-tree handling function, which is available for a number of Komatsu harvesting heads, C-style. It offers greater efficiency, quieter operation, and improved reliability. It also offers the advantage of increased flexibility as the head can be used for more types of harvesting. The capacity for the multitree handling equipment has been increased by a full 25% compared to the previous multitree handling function that was available on the C93. The multitree handling system has a cast design and a protected valve which increases durability. The new multi-tree handling system is an option available for the Komatsu C93, the Komatsu C123, and the Komatsu C144.

There are several additional important improvements for the new Rottne EGS 706 head. Swedish manufacturer Rottne has made a series of upgrades to its cut-to-length harvesting heads, none more impressive than those made to the EGS 706. For starters, there is a new robust system for length measuring, which senses without mechanical coupling. Different types of measuring wheels are available and all have higher pressure against the stem than previous systems. “Several tests have shown that the quality of the measuring within ± 2 cm has increased by 10%,” Rottne said. Diameter measuring in the upper knifes is also improved with help from a new, more robust design for the sensors, delivering a 10-15% improvement in measurements within ± 4 cm – a material improvement. A pendulum arm with protected cylinders has external tanks for colour marking, while a connecting block reduces stress to increase

Diameter measuring in the upper knives

Pendulum arm with protected cylinders Saw motor rpm is controlled electronically by the pump displacement the lifetime of couplings and hydraulic hoses. Couplings are 24° metric and soft sealed, while ports are also soft sealed. The rotator function has changed to a valve. Feed rollers are now 391 mm and spikes can be 12.5 mm or 20 mm. The alignment between the outer feed rollers and the internal feed rollers is optimised for lower friction, while chain lubrication is

an option with oil or grease (the pump unit is mounted on the base of the machine). There is a new profile on the lower delimbing knifes for better cantering. Saw motor rpm is controlled electronically by the pump displacement. It is generally set at 1,700 rpm on the diesel engine and the same oil flow is maintained, even if the engine rpm increases. There is a constant LS signal when cutting. The new L90LS valve has separate drainage from the pressure controlled sections for knifes and feed wheel clamping and comes with a reinforced bracket. It has a new type of hydraulic hose with much better

wear resistance. There are accumulators on the wheel clamping for smoother feeding. Meanwhile, the high pressure line, return line and drainage line have swivels integrated in the connecting block at the tilt arm and there is a reinforced main frame.

Totally new U-Grip versions are under development. In addition to the usual 13 mm, 16 mm and 19 mm chains, are 22 mm, 1 mm and 1.5 mmdiamond chains, which are designed specifically for heavy skidders that work in demanding conditions. Furthermore, U-Grip 22 will be available with double diamond pattern for 30.5-32 and 35.5-32 sizes. The chain will be the strongest forestry chain on the market and available from early 2017. OFA Craftec 16 is a perfect chain for logging usage, when selfcleaning is an essential feature. It is also an excellent choice for logging operations where mounting and unmounting has to be done frequently. The connecting of chain ends is quick due to slanted cap couplings and no tools are needed. Nowadays, since the latest update of all OFA 16 mm chains, links are formed so that roll over of studded links is no longer are problem, even after thousands of driving hours. The redesign was carried out by narrowing the links in the middle, using 19 mm studs instead of 16 mm, and leaving the welding burr on link’s inner edge uncut. OFA Paragon 16 was launched in 2015 and has become very popular, especially in Nordic countries. Paragon is a dual-link chain that is manufactured for

the most common 700-series forest machinery tyre sizes. In the development of this chain, customers’ experience and wishes were taken into careful consideration. The longitudinal pattern of Paragon lessens elongation of the chain compared to diamond type chains. Dual welds of links significantly improve stability and ensure studded links remain in an upright position, which makes traction even more effective. Furthermore, this chain maintains its position exceptionally well on the tyre. The NordChain SuperStud chain-line has proved to be a sales success ever since its launch. It offers reliable grip thanks to buttwelded U-studs. A relatively open pattern of wear chain restrains mud clogging effectively, especially in for one diamond style chains, which are the perfect choice for skidders. The TS-version has an additional chain on the tyre walls to provide very good protection against sharp rocks and stumps. TS also has a tension chain as standard. NordChain MultiStud 130 TS and 160TS are the “ultimate” chains for stony ground, according to the manufacturer. The wide U-stud is supplemented with standing studs over the rings. An additional chain on the tyre walls protects the tyre against sharp rocks and stumps. Microalloy case hardened boron steel ensures high wear resistance, which is necessary in demanding logging conditions. MultiStud TS is equipped with a tension chain as standard.

The broad upturned edges improve flotation and ease steering, a notable benefit when performing thinning operations. Haggis Link is a new and advanced track link, which Clark Tracks has designed and manufactured through its experience and engineering knowhow. This new design features a new pin profile to maximise life and reduce maintenance through tensioning, especially during the initial running period. Furthermore, the special profile of the side flanges reduces the risk of links twisting while remaining tyre friendly. Haggis Link is available as an optional upgrade on all 28 mm tracks.

size and production rate. And the inside of the cutting chamber is smooth and open, which reduces clogging from mud or build-up of material. Improved skid shoes can be adjusted from 0.5-1.5 in, which allows mulching below grade. Operating at 2,000-2,400 rpm, the mulching head features a synchronous drive belt for greater efficiency and less maintenance. The G4 comes standard with a V-Drive system that includes a variable-displacement motor (V-Drive) with 37% more displacement, which improves torque and offers less stalling and shorter recovery. The V-Drive also has load-sensing technology. Under light loads, it operates at maximum RPM, and as the load increases, it automatically lowers the rotor RPM to maximize torque. Full rotation of the mulching head is achieved thanks to specially designed hose routing that has been improved to allow more motion without damage. This feature also allows the unit to easily position trees with the adjustable push bar and welded claw hooks. The push bar can be used to push falling brush and trees away from the power unit, and the claw hooks can pull material into position for proper feeding. The Carbide Cutter G4 is designed for maximum durability. Abrasion-resistant steel is used in areas exposed to high wear, and it comes equipped with a custom hydraulic control valve that protects the unit from pressure spikes. It also stops the rotor quickly on shutdown without damaging components. Other standard features include an on-board pressure gauge and steel deflector chains. Loftness manufactures the VMLogix line of vegetation management equipment, which includes hydraulic oil coolers and highperformance mulching heads for a variety of equipment, ranging from skid steer loaders to 400 hp prime movers.

The PowerDirect Plus system monitors what the attachment is demanding, what the operator is commanding the machine to do, and the available power from the engine

The Cat 586C Site Prep Tractor is a powerful, multipurpose machine that can be paired with a mulching head or brush cutting attachment to perform a variety of land management tasks. Applications include residential and commercial development, land management, right-of-way construction and maintenance, wetlands and wildlife habitat management, plantation reclamation and management, and clearing land for flood control and firebreaks. The Cat 586C is powered by a Cat C9 ACERT 261 kW (350 hp) engine. It can be paired with the Cat HM825 Mulcher, which can tackle trees up to 40.6 cm (16 in) in diameter, or the Cat BR624 Brushcutter, capable of cutting through single stems up to 20 cm (8 in); both are available from the factory and supported by Cat dealers. The HM825 Mulcher is essentially a powerful grinding tool that was developed and customized in tandem with the 586C and integrated with it for all research and testing. It can process

vegetation into mulch at rates ranging from 1/4-acre per hour to nearly 3 acres/h, depending on the desired end product, vegetation and density, ground conditions, and operator experience. Applications include virtually any need for removing vegetation ranging from brushy material to trees and processing it into mulch. Other examples of applications include creating access trails and roads, maintaining golf courses, and managing wildlife habitat and hunting land and other landscapes. “The real heart of the Cat 586C is the PowerDirect Plus system,” Matt McDonald, a Caterpillar Production Application Specialist, told International Forest Industries. “That allows us to over-size all the different hydraulic circuits.” The PowerDirect Plus system monitors what the attachment is demanding, what the operator is commanding the machine to do, and the available power from the engine. This system puts power where it is needed to maximize productivity while optimizing engine performance, fuel efficiency and durability by maintaining a consistent load on the engine. The system is an important feature, noted McDonald, because the mulching tool has such a high

60 International Forest Industries | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016

power requirement. For example, a hydraulic pump powering a harvester disc saw may run at about 41 gallons/minute. The Cat mulching tool gets about 100 gallons/minute and also operates at a higher pressure than saw head pumps. The 586C features a refined operator cab and considerable flexibility in various functions. For example, with the adjustable creep control, located on the joystick, the operator does not have to ‘feather’ the pedal and can leave his foot on the floor; the speed is easily adjusted with the buttons on the joystick. Similarly, the attachment float control allows the tool to follow the contours of the ground for uniform, consistent mulching; it also reduces operator fatigue because it eliminates the need for continual adjustments in rough conditions. Debris management is a key consideration in site prep machines since they generate so much pulverized wood material, dirt and dust. The 586C design features pressurized compartments that keep debris out of the rearmounted engine, hydraulics, and cooling system. That translates into reduced downtime and maintenance – time spent blowing

out debris – and enhanced performance. Plus, the pressurized air flow keeps electronics, sensors and other components cool. “We’ve got some unique things that are integrated with the air cleaning system that differentiate us,” McDonald added. Beyond the location of the engine air intake, a dust ejector chute is integrated into the pre-cleaner, which eliminates recycling dust and debris into the pre-cleaner. A scavenger system also sucks out large debris to significantly improve air filter life. The high capacity cooling system and on-demand reversing fan keep the machine running cool. Special attention was given to cooling the case drain oil from the HM825 Mulcher, ensuring a cool

running machine. The oversized, hydraulically driven fan spins at a slower speed overall and only turns as fast as needed to maintain proper hydraulic and engine temperatures. In colder weather or when the machine is first started, for example, the fan spins more slowly to conserve power and fuel and reduce noise.

The 586C is easy to service.

The Vermeer FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head gives contractors a powerful machine with the features they need to complete tough land-clearing jobs, according to the manufacturer. “The FT300 mulcher head is a cut above the competition,” Vermeer said. A ringed rotor design helps guide material to the 23 cutting tips for a cleaner cutting path, while also controlling the depth of cut. To customise cutting performance based on jobsite needs, contractors can choose from sharp planar, clad-faced planar or impact-resistant interchangeable tip options. Also, a patent-pending selfpositioning deflector helps direct thrown material at a consistent angle regardless of head position, helping enhance jobsite safety and allowing the operator to focus on productivity. The FT300 features a 300 hp (223 kW) Cummins QSL9 diesel engine that meets Tier 4 Final (EU Stage IV) emissions standards. It includes a horsepower ‘bulge’ that allows an increase to 320 hp (238 kW) when the engine drops from 2,200 rpm to 2,000 rpm under load, helping to increase performance and productivity. With a 137 gallon (518.6 litre) fuel tank, the machine has ample fuel capacity to allow

the operator to work longer without interruption. The mulcher head hydraulic components are designed to operate below their rated capacity, which helps extend their life and reduce stress on the machine. “Land-clearing work is the first step in timely and expensive projects, such as land development and pipeline installations,” Jeff Bradley, Product Manager for the Recycling and Forestry Segment at Vermeer, said. “The power and features of the FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head, along with innovations like the self-positioning deflector, helps increase productivity so contractors can more easily meet the stringent deadlines they’re given.” To meet contractors’ jobsite needs, the FT300 offers the flexibility of two track options. The 76.2 cm wide (30 in) single-grouser steel tracks provide superior tractive effort, while 83.8 cm (33 in) low ground pressure (LGP) tracks are ideal when working in soft ground conditions. With all service points accessible from the ground, maintenance is convenient on the FT300. The engine compartment is easily accessible with two large doors that swing open to expose the engine, hydraulic pump, cooling system and other maintenance points. Operator comfort was another top consideration in the design of the FT300. It is equipped with airride seating, ergonomic controls, optimal sightlines and a rear-view camera. A 17.8 cm (7 in) colour

display provides real-time machine performance data to help the operator maximise productivity. The FT300 also accommodates an optional 13,607.8 kg (30,000 lb) rear-mounted winch. In the competitive land-clearing market, the FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head offers the features, reliability and support contractors need.

“With the demands faced by these contractors, they are looking for an equipment supplier that stands behind its products and provides machines that are up to the job,” Bradley said. “We know of no competitor in the marketplace that can match the reliability and the quality of service of Vermeer and its independent dealers.”

“One big thing is the fuel fill is at ground level as well as the electric hydraulic oil fill, which forces oil through a filter before entering the system,” McDonald said. The 586C is the only machine of its type in the industry with the fuel fill at ground level. Panels around the engine compartments open for full, easy access for preventive maintenance, and a tilting cab provides additional access.

The swing kings A new range of swing machines could reshape the industry, according to John Deere

J

ohn Deere claims to have set a new industry standard for the swing machine market, through the release of its 3154/3156G and 3754/3756G swing machines, which “offer operators increases in productivity, durability and reliability”. “From loading to processing big wood, the G-Series swing machines help loggers efficiently power through jobs,” the manufacturer stated. As part of the G-Series introduction, John Deere will distinguish its crawler log loaders using 56 in the model name, while the forestry excavators will continue to use the 54 designations. The most notable improvement on the G-Series swing machines is the completely redesigned cab, which is equipped with features to increase operator comfort. The larger side-entry cab and the elevated rear-entry climatecontrolled cab are more spacious than their predecessors and include fatigue-reducing features, such as excellent window clarity, ergonomic controls and isolation mounting to boost operator productivity throughout long days. The 3154G and 3754G swing

machines are equipped with a side-entry cab, while the 3156G and 3756G models are equipped with an elevated rear-entry cab, allowing for safe and easy entry and exit. These elevated cabs feature floor-mounted windows that increase visibility to the tracks to help manoeuvre over difficult ground conditions. Additionally, a new cab-forward option on the 3156G model boosts operator confidence, particularly when swinging toward the boom side of the cab, positioning the operator 17 in further forward than standard cabs. New LED lighting options on all models expand the lighted area with crisp, clear lighting for improved visibility and safety on the job site.

“At John Deere, we understand that operator comfort is vital to productivity, particularly during long days on the job,” Dave McFarlane, Product Marketing Manager for John Deere Construction & Forestry, said. “When developing the new G-Series swing machines, we focused on improving operator comfort and safety, creating a more spacious cab and increasing visibility. We feel these improvements will raise the bar for operator expectations in the industry.” In addition to the redesigned cabs, the new G-Series swing machines offer a host of features designed to improve machine uptime and performance. Hot and cold in Utah LH855D is the key ingredient to Michael Roundy’s new thinning system in Utah’s beautiful Dixie National Forest

U

nlike many loggers, Michael Roundy, member of Barco LLC in Washington, Utah is quite geographically isolated from other contractors. He performs prescription thinning for the US Forest Service in Dixie National Forest, often working at elevations up to 3 350 m (11,000 ft). Barco is typically harvesting bugkill spruce mixed with a small percentage of green timber. This is a fuel reduction, salvage and stewardship thinning program and it is important to preserve the saplings and juvenile trees so that the forest can naturally regenerate, maintaining overall health and a wide age range. There is variation in size and diameter and typically a good deal of steep terrain. Michael explains that traditionally, the cutting work was performed with a track feller buncher. Skidders brought full trees to a hot deck where the timber was processed with a stroke delimber. When Michael began logging, he adopted this system and was achieving six to seven 40 ton loads per day. However, he was never particularly happy with it. The decks tended to be congested and potentially dangerous with skidders, the stroke delimber, loaders and trucks all vying for position. Bottlenecks occurred

66 International Forest Industries | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016

Before and after. Barco’s thinning operations in Dixie National Forest have multiple goals including fuel reduction, salvage and stewardship

because inevitably, the skidders were waiting on the stroke delimber before dropping a load or the stroke delimber would starve for wood if the skidders could not keep up. The balance and flow required for hot logging just wasn’t there. Although Michael was unhappy, there weren’t many contractors to bounce ideas off of. In fact, he figures there is not another active logging contractor for at least 400 km (250 miles) in any direction. So Michael did much of his research on the internet. He poured over manufacturer websites, contacted owners and operators through social media and watched a heck of a lot of YouTube videos. Much of the research focused on processors and how he could change his system by replacing the stroke delimber. “This was all driven by safety, utilization and production,” says Michael. Rather than have one central hot deck, Michael envisioned several landings. The feller buncher would be cutting far ahead of the rest of the system and the skidders would pull to one of several predetermined cold decking areas. A loader would be on hand to pile the decks to a sixteen foot (5 m) height. As skidding progressed along the cutblock, the skidder and loader would advance to the next cold deck, optimizing skid distances. (Each cold deck is directly accessible by the haul trucks.) The processor would work from deck to deck processing the trees without any interference from other machines and later the loaders would come back to load the trucks. Older loggers that had previously worked the region said it would not work because of the slopes. “They didn’t think we would have the room in the landings and thought that the processors would be fighting the cold decks,” explains Michael. “In order to change my system, I had to gather information through the internet and word of mouth through social media. It felt like a big gamble even after studying for three years,” Michael explains. “When you ask people on social media, 90 percent say that for our conditions, the best processor is a Tigercat 855 with a leveling undercarriage. It was a big gamble but it paid off. Michael ended up purchasing a Tigercat LH855D

Where I come from every processor guy wants an 855. That machine is a champion. Dave Yaffe, Barco LLC

leveling harvester equipped with a 600 South Star processing head from Kevin Cotton at Titan Equipment. “I needed cooling, flow and horsepower and that is the reason I bought the Tigercat. I am so isolated here and do not have close-by service support. I may have considered a different machine but I needed to have the reliability and that is another reason I needed the Tigercat.” Expert processor operator Dave Yaffe, who has been operating the LH855D since it was new sums up its performance pretty efficiently, “Where I come from every processor guy wants an 855. That

machine is a champion.” Michael saw almost immediate benefits upon changing the system. His production tripled from six or seven loads per day to an average of eighteen loads per day. Barco’s number one product is house logs. The dead spruce trees make excellent material for log cabin construction right up until four years after the tree has died. Anything that won’t make a house log goes to the local firewood mill which, through distributors, supplies firewood to retail stores throughout the US southwest. However, he also added a new marketable product.

Replacing the stroke delimber with a processor tripled production while cutting slash piles in half and adding a new marketable product. Many of the logs in this pile would have been wasted previously International Forest Industries | OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2016 67

The key to the new system is the LH855D

Due to the length of the trees and the time consuming stroke delimbing cycles, all the trees were previously topped at eight inches (200 mm). It just didn’t pay to have the stroker spend any more time handling the tree. With the processor, Michael is capturing and merchandising all those additional sticks – either as an input for the fi rewood mill or more commonly as a product that is sold to a shaving mill to be made into horse and turkey bedding. “My slash piles dropped by half,” says Michael. Loader operator Ephraim Nyborg has been with the company for almost four years. He loads trucks and can fill in everywhere in the operation. He explains that the LH855D has also improved loading efficiency from 90 to 45 minutes

per truck. (Barco also does its own log hauling.) Previously, in order to maintain production, the stroke delimber operator was forced to pile the logs indiscriminately. Then Ephraim was required to sort the products during loading. Now the harvester can sort all the different products neatly and efficiently. One interesting thing to note, the cold decks are stacked with loaders rather than the skidders. While this improves skidder productivity, there is another reason – skidders tend to break the expensive logs. Some of the naysayers thought that adding yet another machine to the system would mess up the costing. However, Michael figured all this in advance and now asserts that the extra loader totally pays off.

In addition, since Barco also has a construction side consisting of roadwork, aggregate and equipment hauling, Michael can bounce around operators between log loaders and excavator dirt jobs which makes adding loaders and managing labour easier. Terry Roseberry, a long time

Tigercat customer active in California and southern Oregon, has been contract falling for Barco with a Tigercat LX830C for about a year. Terry’s careful felling and strategic bunching combined with a clever use of skid trails minimizes soil disturbance and maiming of the smaller trees and saplings.

Hagan Brian, the operator of the Tigercat 620E, makes good use of the Turnaround® seat, shuttling up and down the steep skid trails, without ever having to turn the machine around. Together the Barco crew and Terry are taking forests in poor health littered with deadwood and turning them into expertly thinned tracts that not only provide a good, sustainable yield but will also see excellent health, reduced fi re hazard and new growth in the future. Aesthetically – and aesthetics are important in a recreational area such as this – the result is outstanding.

Additionally, and very important for Michael, the efficiency of his system allows him to provide his crew members with a safe, lucrative and quality working environment. Michael quips, “If we can’t provide our guys a good living and good stability and a nice, safe environment than what are we doing this for?” This article originally appeared in Between the Branches, July 2016, the official publication of Tigercat Industries Inc.

Cat adds to swing range ®

Innovation Industry heavyweight Caterpillar® has made its range even more versatile with two new swing models launched at Demo International

The 538 with Satco attachment

C

aterpillar® has launched two new Cat Forest Machine models, the 538 and the 558 – the first models in the 500 series to meet US EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards. Both machines were unveiled at Demo International last month and feature “outstanding fuel efficiency” and “optimized work tools”, while increasing horsepower and swing torque, according to the manufacturing giant. “We are delighted to bring the new 500 series models of the Cat Forest Machine to the marketplace,” Caterpillar Forest Products President Kevin Thieneman said. “The Cat 538 Forest Machine and Cat 558 Forest Machine underscore Caterpillar’s commitment to research and development to enable the forest products industry to move forward. “Loggers need machines that will make them money,” he continued, “and we are committed to supplying them with equipment that helps them profit from their work. We do this by designing and building forestry equipment that lowers their ownership and operating costs and increases their production. “These two new forest machines deliver on this commitment. “They are designed for maximum efficiency and maximum productivity in order to

provide more profit potential to loggers.” Cat Forest Machines are versatile, purpose-built track machines that can be customized to perform a complete range of tasks for forestry operations. First introduced in the 1990s, this family of machines has become an industry standard in many logging applications. Like other Cat Forest Machines, the 538 is available in a general forestry version for road building, stroke delimber applications, grapple applications, site preparation and processing. Both the 538 and the 558 are available in a log loader configuration for log loading, shovel logging, butt-ntop/power clam applications, and millyard activities. The Cat 538 and Cat 558 feature a new machine design, new engine, and optimized components and work tools to provide exceptional fuel savings and also excellent productivity. Machine and hydraulic performance are boosted by increased engine horsepower. Both models boast “rock-solid” stability, and the 538 features a wider track gauge and heavyduty counterweight to maximize stability and operator experience in diverse logging conditions. Application versatility is enhanced with a purpose-built boom and stick arrangements and new grouser options.

The new machines are engineered for durability and reliability with proven Cat components, purpose-built upper and lower frames, and increased cooling capability to maximize machine uptime. The heart of the Cat 538 is the 164 hp (122kW) Cat C7.1 ACERT Tier 4 Final engine. The Cat 558 is more powerful, equipped with the 239 hp (178kW) Cat C7.1 ACERT Tier 4 Final engine, a twin-turbocharged power plant. Both larger engines generate increased horsepower, providing the power for strong multi-functioning and improved implement performance – and more production. Both models feature uniform speed control to maintain a constant engine speed regardless of load. The result is unprecedented fuel economy. Other features contribute to fuel economy, too. For example, with automatic engine speed control the machines will revert automatically to a lower idle speed when there is a lull in operation. Also, the operator can choose from three power modes, depending on the work tasks or application. “The hydraulic system delivers a higher level of efficiency and power,” said Jared Dunn, the Caterpillar Forest Machine Application Specialist. “Pumps are upsized to increase hydraulic

flow, so while the engine can run at a lower rpm, burning less fuel, the Cat 538 and Cat 558 have more power and perform more work. The main pumps, control valves, and hydraulic oil tank are located close together to allow for shorter tubes and lines between components, reducing friction and pressure drops. Updates to the hydraulic system translate to an impressive boost in performance: maximum horsepower, greater swing torque, and added lift capacity. The increases mean improved implement performance, lifting bigger payloads with better control - and more production. In addition, an electronic boom regeneration valve minimizes pump flow when the boom lowers by regenerating oil from one end of the boom cylinder to the other, saving energy and improving fuel efficiency. The engines feature an improved side-by-side cooling system with increased cooling capacity for both models. The radiator package has been updated, and fin spacing has

increased 25% to improve airflow and cooling capability. A standard auto-reversing fan with optimized fan blade pitch increases service intervals and maintains proper engine operating temperature. Machine width and track length are designed for maximum machine stability for increased lift and swing capabilities, and the 538 features a heavy-duty counterweight while the 558 features a fuel tank counterweight. The purpose-built forestry machine hydraulics and new boom and stick configurations are capable of operating a wide range of work tools. New grouser options increase machine applicability on the job site, and ground saw hydraulics are available from the factory. The Cat 538 and Cat 558, optimized and integrated for Satco and Cat work tools, were designed with the customer and service technician in mind and to be easy to maintain. Many service locations are readily accessible at ground level; critical maintenance can be completed quickly and efficiently.

These two machines are designed for maximum efficiency and maximum productivity in order to provide more profit potential to loggers Kevin Thieneman

The cab is designed and purpose-built for tough forestry work. LED lights are standard along with a heated and cooled seat that maximizes operator comfort. Spacious, quiet, and comfortable to ensure high productivity all day, the cab is pressurized and features an updated bi-level air conditioner, heater, and defroster to keep the operator comfortable in any weather. Other features include satellite radio, auxiliary audio port for MP3 players, and 12-volt power supply sockets for charging. In addition, the Cat 558 and an existing model, the Cat 568, are now available with a rear entry cab option for log loader configurations. The option, available on machines in North

America and Australia and New Zealand, offers unparalleled operator experience with safer access, improved operator comfort, and increased visibility. A patented cab lock down system reduces transport time. Product Link, Caterpillar’s machine monitoring system, is standard on both the Cat 538 and the Cat 558 Forest Machine. The user friendly technology enables remote monitoring of equipment. Caterpillar customers are supported by the industry’s largest network of dealers who will keep them up and running with parts availability, field services, stateof-the art diagnostic programs, remote monitoring, and more.

Doppstadt Expo 2015 - a Bird’s-eye View

50 years of Doppstadt: More than 5,000 guests from the environmental and recycling sector experienced two unforgettable days: on 24 and 25 June 2015. Environmental technology company Doppstadt staged what was arguably the largest European trade show of 2015 in this field on its 220,000 sq.-metre works site (Saxony-Anhalt). On show were over one hundred machines for the shredding, sorting and treatment of waste and biomass. What was unique thereby

was that more than half of the machines could be seen in action. In two-hour live demonstrations, the guests saw how coarse shredders, screening machines and exact hackers shredded tree trunks into sawdust, separated waste from recyclables and sorted pebbles from sand heaps. In doing so, Doppstadt demonstrated its problem-solving skills through combined processes: material collected by machines was initially shredded, then separated into its various components by means of separation processes such as screening, washing or air separation.

Integrated Log Loader

MyMill™ - Changing the way you work

USNR’s Integrated Log Loader is positioned at the last step in the log feeder, and precisely manages the gap between logs.

MyMill is a new software suite developed by USNR that enables mill personnel to interact with mill equipment using mobile devices, such as iPads and iPods. This new mobile functionality will change the landscape of today’s modern mills.

6-Deck Jet Veneer Dryer - time lapse construction

Murray Timber 4-sided canting log breakdown line

This new 6-deck jet veneer dryer, located at Martco, Chopin, LA, is the largest dryer to date in the southern yellow pine region. This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.

This mill is located in Ireland.

The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.

Wood Processing Industry: Springer System Fitness Check

SPRINGER - a step ahead through productivity

When correctly serviced and controlled, a system ensures reliable and efficient operation. That’s why a steadily increasing number of customers is opting for our system fitness check. Following inspection of the system, measures for improving state and performance are suggested. These activities form the basis for a successful and complete system checkup during summer or winter breaks. For that reason, the inspection should ideally be carried out 2 or 3 months before the scheduled system check in your plant.

SPRINGER is well known for machines and conveyor systems and produces innovative wood processing solutions worldwide.

Innovative CLT production lines
