SPRINGER wins major order in New Zealand

Pan Pac & SPRINGER continue long-standing partnership with new, earth-quake-proof, heavy-duty, sawmill feed system

The SPRINGER Group has landed a major new order in New Zealand. Pan Pac is owned by the Japanese OJI Group and is New Zealand’s leading specialist in sustainable radiata pine products. The company has now picked SPRINGER’s cuttingedge technologies and innovative solutions once again. Together with local partners like Lakeland Steel Limited and Design Manufacture & Installation in Rotorua, the Austrian, family-run company will be the main contractor for the new, earthquake-proof, heavy-duty sawmill feed system at Pan Pac’s Whirinaki (Hawke’s Bay) site. The investment totals around NZD 13 million (approx. EUR 7.8 million).

“The investment in the replacement of the sawmill feed system, which was originally installed in the early 1980s, underscores the continued commitment by OJI Holding, Pan Pac’s shareholder. These types of strategic investments have helped turn Pan Pac into New Zealand’s biggest exporter of high-quality premium appearance lumber throughout Asia”, explains Pan Pac managing director Tony Clifford. The order was issued following several years of in-depth project work geared to the customer’s highly specific requirements. However, SPRINGER had already started to help Pan Pac develop the new heavy-duty sawmill feed system back in 2017.

“Over the past few years, the SPRINGER Group has established itself as the world’s leading supplier of innovative solutions for the wood industry. The order again proves that SPRINGER is a reliable, quality-driven partner when it comes to technologically demanding projects. We’re delighted that this project allows us to continue the long standing collaboration between Pan Pac and SPRINGER,” comments Timo Springer, Springer Maschinenfabrik GmbH’s CEO.

Michael Reaburn General Manager Lumber at Pan Pac Forest Products Ltd

“Its expertise, position as industry frontrunner and competitiveness were key reasons why we picked SPRINGER. Pan Pac has always harnessed international technologies to improve processes and our first-class product range’s lumber quality for our customers worldwide,” explains Michael Reaburn, Pan Pac’s general manager of lumber.

In order to minimise downtime, system integration, commissioning and project handover are scheduled during a planned shutdown of the plant at the end of 2022. Facts and figures about the project:

• System capacity: 15 cycles/ minute, unsorted mixed operation, length of the log 3.4 - 6 metres, LED 0,9 metres and max. log envelopes of up to 1.1 metres. • Annual log feeding capacity 950,000 tonnes/1,100.00 m³ p.a. • Radiata pine logs supplied by the company’s own forestry enterprise and from its own forests • Heavy-duty sawmill feed system with 2 parallel double-feed decks (deep pile 2.5 m) • Consecutively alternating log feed from the two 2-stage feed decks to ensure seamless feed to the saw line according to the production specifications, as well as symmetrical utilisation of the sorting systems. • LOGEYE 301 with WiNLOG recording at the saw infeed, sorting, production data capture/ logging/statistical analyses etc. • The new generation of screw conveyor technology as a heavyduty version. • Smart sensor technology: continuous fill level scanning of the feed decks as well as constant log position detection in the whole separation and infeed area. • Earthquake-proof design of all the system and control technology • Modular system and control concept guarantees

Microtec receives first type examination certificate for a round timber measuring system in Germany

On February 10, 2021, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig issued a type examination certificate according to module B for the round timber measuring system of the type Logeye-DE-700 from Microtec.

This creates the prerequisites for using this type of measuring device for legally compliant invoicing of logs according to the new MessEG/MessEV in Germany.

Since 01.01.2015, the new Measuring and Calibration Act (MessEG) and the new Measuring and Calibration Ordinance (MessEV) have come into force in Germany, which newly regulates the calibration system.

On the basis of this law, the new measuring device type “round timber measuring systems” was introduced on 12.02.2020 by the PTB’s Rule Determination Committee (REA). In addition to the proven “Fixed Angle” (FW) method, this measuring device type enables diameter determinations of round timber with the “Variable Angle” (VW) method.

With the “Fixed Angle” method, even with the new type of device, it is possible to continue to invoice roundwood according to common practice (in the sense of continuity of existing “roundwood measuring systems”). The measuring method “Variable Angle” has the advantage of measuring logs independent of their position and thus enables highest repeatability.

Within the scope of the type examination according to Module B, extensive measurements were carried out on logs under practical conditions using a mobile fringe projection measuring system specially developed for such reference measurements by PTB in Braunschweig.

In addition, measurements were performed under extreme environmental conditions such as temperatures ranging from -30°C to +45°C. Due to the outstanding cooperation with PTB, it could be proven that the new log measuring system meets all requirements for a log measuring system.

The measuring device type Logeye-DE-700 from Microtec measures logs with and without bark without contact. The measurement is based on the principle of laser triangulation, whereby the measuring points on the log are recorded with a total of 8 cameras. The use of dual camera technology, which captures the measurement points from two different angles, minimizes shadowing and thus significantly increases measurement accuracy.

“With the newly approved measuring device type LogeyeDE-700, our customers from now on have the possibility to use a measuring device according to the current state of the art for legally compliant billing of logs and at the same time they can rely on the proven Microtec quality,” emphasizes Arianna Giudiceandrea, CSO at Microtec.
