Lensed Orchids for Mahelona

Article and photos by Anne E. O’Malley

A half dozen volunteers from the Kaua‘i Orchid Society tied orchids and other epiphytes into crooks and notches of trees gracing the courtyard of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. Society members donated the 60 to 70 plants for the 61 residents plus staff to enjoy. About 10 of the residents assisted. Josie Pablo, director of the Recreational Therapy Department conceived of the event. The Society holds its meetings on the hospital campus and the idea grew from there.

“Fifteen years ago, I didn’t expect to be a politician,” says newly appointed state Public Utilities Commission Chair Mina Morita. She was the business manager of the Kilauea Point Natural History Association back then, at a time when she and friends didn’t want to see the incumbent run unopposed for the State House seat. When a challenger arose and then fell out, she stepped up. She’s come a long way from that 75-vote win in 1996 and the day in 1999 when she

completed her first term as a committee chair, seeing her only a c c o m p l i s h m e nt— having a major bill survive the legislature—get shot down by the governor’s veto. Since then, as Rep. Morita, she’s helped formulate Hawai‘i’s energy policy through some of the state’s most important laws such as the Hawai‘i Clean Energy Initiative, renewable portfolio standard, net metering, energy efficiency portfolio standard, the solar water heater mandate and the barrel tax.

Morita sees her new position as an opportunity to assist in making the fundamental change necessary to support economic diversification through stable and predictable energy pricing. That’s what she told the Hawai‘i Legislature in her statement at a Senate confirmation hearing, and that’s where she’s aiming. To start, take a look at her kuleana. The state-operated PUC oversees four electric utilities; one gas company, 176 telecommunication companies, 38 private water and sewer companies, four water carriers and 1,272 trucking and bus companies. Hers is an important seat, with a lot of regulating of businesses—to the tune of billions of dollars. History shows that the PUC has looked at its kuleana through reactionary lenses focused on rates. Mori-

ta’s plan is revolutionary. “My vision for the PUC is to make it really proactive rather than reactive in helping to shape the economy for Hawai‘i,” she says. “I see the PUC as the economic driver for the state and I’m trying assemble a topnotch team to steer that vision.” For more than a decade, as a state representative, and chair of the House Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection, Morita has worked to move Hawai‘i toward the development of local, renewable, and clean energy resources. It hasn’t been easy to, as she says, “develop the political will while attempting to keep electricity rates and gasoline prices reasonable, and convincing Hawai‘i’s formidable institutions to change their business model.” see Morita page 5

Prior to her appointment as chair, Morita says she did a lot of soul searching. She’d always figured that she’d retire from the legislature and that would be the end of her public career. “This is a huge challenge, and all of my skills will be put to the test,” she says. “It’s a huge responsibility because I know I’m directly affecting every resident and every business in the state; but it’s also a huge opportunity to help guide Hawai‘i’s future. “It’s easy to draw pol-

icy and plans for a vision for Hawai‘i,” says Morita. “The real work is in implementation— how do we change the business model to actually implement this clean energy vision for our electric utilities?” She says she sees the PUC as the economic driver for the state and adds, “I’m trying to assemble a topnotch team to steer that vision.” Interviewing some of the potential teammates, Morita asked a state worker who is an engineer with a law degree and M.B.A. why he’d consider working

for government where he’d earn a quarter of what he’d earn in the private sector. His reply? Morita says he told her, “I’m helping to shape the future of Hawai‘i. That is exciting, better than drawing plans or writing briefs in a cubicle somewhere in the private sector.” She adds her point of view. “I feel the same way. It’s an opportunity to shape the future for the better, a sustainable and diversified economy for Hawai‘i.”

Mauna Ulu’s five-year run from 1969 to 1974. For much of its history, the current eruption has pumped caustic gas into the atmosphere from two locations—the volcanic vent at Pu‘u ‘O‘o and the spot where lava flows reach the sea. For the past three years, these twin sources have been complemented by even more sulfur gas from increased activity at the Kilauea summit. And on March 5, a new fissure erupted near Napau Crater, accompanied by dramat-

ic collapses in the lava lakes at Halema‘uma‘u and Pu‘u ‘O‘o. (You can read updated status reports on Kilauea’s activities on the web at volcanoes. usgs.gov/hvo/activity/ kilaueastatus.php “Vog is primarily a mixture of sulfur dioxide gas and sulfate aerosol. Sulfur dioxide, an invisible gas, reacts with oxygen and moisture in the atmosphere to produce sulfate aerosol, which is visible as a haze in the air,” says a press release from the University of Hawai‘i. Near the volcano, the health issues can be chronic and severe.

Besides the damage to human lungs, the acidic compounds can burn the leaves of native forests and crop plants. It has been a significant problem for the Big Island’s flower industry. Here on Kaua‘i, the issues, for most people, are less severe. But they are very real. During the worst times, residents complain about the burning eyes, stuffy noses and burning throats. Researchers at the University of Hawai‘i have launched a program to try to forecast vog. You can learn about this program and see their forecasts at weather.

hawaii.edu/vmap. VMAP (Vog Measurement and Prediction) is a joint project of Steven Businger and Roy Huff at the Department of Meteorology, and Keith Horton and John Porter of the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology and U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Collaborators include Jeff Sutton and Tamar Elias of the, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and Roland Drazler of NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory. There’s a lot of information there, but the researchers caution that it’s a research

project, and they don’t want individuals making significant decisions based on the preliminary data to be found there—yet. And ultimately, this research won’t help individuals cope with the vog, but at least you’ll know when it’s coming, and perhaps how long it’s likely to last.

Teen Court: giving youth a chance to start over By Joan Conrow “Wish I had come sooner. Would not have made bad decisions.” Those words, written by a Kaua‘i Teen Court participant, reflect the program’s profound impact on young people. Created as a way to

divert youthful offenders from the judicial system—and empower them in the process— Kaua‘i Teen Court has a solid record: 75 to 80 percent of the kids who go through it don’t commit another crime within a year. That’s largely because they “get it,” in

terms of truly understanding how their actions affect others. Equally important, it’s their peers who hold them accountable, passing judgment in sentencing hearings where former offenders serve as the jurors, clerks, bailiffs and attorneys.

West Kaua‘i Plantation Heritage

“Part of every kids’ sentence is to be a juror for a certain number of times, and some continue on beyond that as volunteers,” says Arleen Kuwamura, who runs the program for Hale ‘Opio, a nonprofit youth advocacy organization. “That’s the purpose: to connect them with something in a meanEleele Shopping Center

Basic Fluffy Okara To toast okara, which dries out and makes a dry “fluffy okara,” spread the fresh okara thinly on an ungreased, but nonstick, cookie sheet; Bake in oven at 200° for 35 to 70 minutes, stirring occasionally, until dry. It will still be slightly moist and sticky when you remove it from the oven, but will dry and crumble as it cools. For general use, it should be taken out when white. For a nut or coconut substitute, light golden (almond) to medium (coconut) browned. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze. Okara, also known as unohana or kirazu, “honorable pulp” is the high fiber remnant of tofu or soy milk making. It contains plenty of soluble or unsoluble fiber and a modest amount of high-quality protein. Spoils easily. Cook or freeze immediately for storage. If they didn’t go to Teen Court, they’d have to appear in Family Court, which takes longer, costs taxpayers more money and leaves the juvenile with a record. “Very good option for kids before they have to face the real world or Family Court,” wrote one par-

WOMEN’S HEALTH Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

Women are natural care givers and typically focus on making sure everyone in the family is being cared for. Annual wellness exams are a way to stop from your busy schedule and take stock of life and how you are managing your own well-being... a time to see what you need and take care of yourself.

“When you are caring for a woman, you are caring for the entire ‘ohana (family).” A woman’s body has special needs including expert breast, gynecological, heart, and bone care. West Kauai Clinics and West Kauai Medical Center have the expert physicians, nurses, and best practice diagnostic tools to help.

Breast Care

Digital Mammography & Stereotactic Biopsy

Our Imaging department has Digital Mammography and Stereotactic Biopsy services. With digital mammography the results are ready for Dr. McGee to evaluate immediately. If a biopsy is needed a consultation with Dr. Emilia Williams or Dr. Elisabeth Biuk is scheduled.

They work with you and your physician to assess any symptoms, exam results, and personal risk factors to determine the best option. In most cases, using the non-surgical STEREOTACTIC BIOPSY is possible. This is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure performed right at West Kauai Medical Center. Results are faster and requires no travel to Oahu or surgical procedure.

Gynecology Care

Drs. Chatkupt and Wichert are warm, gentle and easy to talk to about gynecologic issues. Dr. Chatkupt OB/GYN They have specialized expertise in 338-8311 fertility concerns, lower genital tract, and vulvovaginal diseases

Lifestyle & Stress Management

Dr. Richard Goding is known for his attentive and progressive care. He repeatedly brings the latest technological advances to help his patients. He was • first to bring computer assisted joint replacement to Kauai • first to introduce pulsed knee brace technology for patients who cannot have surgery or want to explore all the options before having surgery • first to provide personalized, custom implants for patients having joint replacement surgery He’s dedicated his personal time and money in a mission to helping people of Phillipines get the care they need to prevent permanent disability from bone fractures. Dr. Goding was instrumental in gaining approval for Extremity MRI equipment at West Kauai Medical Center, providing ready access to one of the most valuable diagnostic tools. Traditional MRI centers can have long wait times, require travel, and resulting delays in patient treatment.     

Short wait times for appointments Faster results for quicker treatment Quiet, comfortable exam Superb quality images Easier, open design for children, large patients, and those with claustrophobia.

Rehabilitation Therapies Extremity MRI at West Kauai Medical Center

Our therapists use the latest technology and techniques to ensure the best results. We have fluidotherapy- like a dry whirlpool which gently warms hands, elbows, and arms before stretching treatments. Specialized computer tools are used for recovery and strengthening of cognitive abilities after brain injury or with diseases like Alzheimer’s. It’s great for both kids and adults. There’s also many adaptive and therapeutic devices for protection and improving independence.

In The Hospital

Just as there are physician specialists for your knees, heart, and eyes, there are also physicians known as hospitalists who specialize in caring for you when you’re hospitalized. A hospitalist is involved in every aspect of your hospital stay, including:  Coordinating and providing your medical care such as working with medical and surgical consultants, physical and occupational therapists, and dieticians.  Ordering tests such as laboratory, X-rays, MRI, Ultrasounds, or CT Scans.  Providing regular care updates to you & your family.  Working with your primary care physician to ensure accuracy of tests performed and medications ordered both while you are staying with us and upon your return home.  Communicating frequently with your primary care physician about your care and progress.

First Priority. Hospital patients are the hospitalists first priority. They are up-to-date on the best in hospital care and in close communications with the nursing and support staff. On-site care. Since they are hospital based and provide 24/7 on-call coverage, hospitalists can rapidly coordinate your care and respond quickly to any changes in your condition.

Easy access. Patients and their families have the opportunity for more frequent one-to-one contact with the hospitalist, ensuring that your questions are promptly Dr. Bridget Collins (SMMH) answered.

Making A Home

Our Emergency Physicians and Nurses are here to help you!

Dr. Ryan Ngiam

When a person requires long term skilled nursing care, the hospital becomes their home. Our staff ‘adopt’ our patients and help them turn their living space into a homey atmosphere. There are garden paths to visit and a beautiful courtyard with outside dining pavilion. Recreational programs take full advantage of all that Kauai has to offer. Residents, staff and families look forward each year to the annual Family Luau, Bon Dance, and Fiesta all hosted on-site as well as outings to the County Farm Fair, Days at the Beach, Holiday Parades, and so much more.

Dr. Steven Slagle

Shorter hospital stays. Patients cared for by hospitalists usually have shorter hospital stays, and are just as satisfied with their care.

Both hospitals have Charitable Foundations to support major needs of the hospital. They raise funds for equipment, patient care, staff programs and education, building renovation and expansion. The members raise money through grants, individual donations, and community events. The hospital Auxiliaries are very active in raising funds for patient equipment, services, and other hospital needs. They run a Gift Shop at KVMH and a Thrift Shop at SMMH. Holiday Craft Fairs, Country Fairs and other fundraising events are a delight for community staff, residents, and visitors. Please help continue the tradition! World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms is a program that seeks to match people desiring firsthand experience of organic farming and gardening with the people here who are actually doing it. Persons accepted into the program lend a helping hand wherever needed and get into the countryside of Hawai‘i and into the Hawaiian culture. Among the five main Hawaiian Islands, over 200 farms are interested in hosting WWOOFers. Kaua‘i has 18 opportunities at the moment, according to the WWOOF website for Kaua‘i

An organic farm on Kaua‘i at www.wwoofhawaii.org/ node/19. Surf the site, pay a nominal fee (the website has all the information) and start the search for your own WWOOF ex-

perience. Once accepted by a farm, you work four to six hours a day, five to five-and-a-half days a week and in return, you receive accommodations, meals and a unique experience. One organic farmer here, Jai Roberts, runs a bed and breakfast called Honua Lani Gardens, with an organic garden on roughly five acres. She’s been at it for almost 30 years. “I’ve used quite a few WWOOF-ers over the years and have used people from all over the world,” says Roberts “A ton of people want to do it. “I send maybe 50 to 60 emails back and forth and have phone conversations and screen in different ways. I want someone with the right attitude who wants to do organic farming.” Another long time organic farmer here says, “People have to be set up for visitors and used to having inexperienced people on their farms. It’s a mixed bag. One out of 100 is a keeper.” Yet another farmer says, “Farmers and WWOOF-ers benefit enormously from the program because farmers need help and it’s a wonderful opportunity for young people to come and learn something about living sustainably and growing their own food.” Page 15

putting on events and entertaining people— it’s always been part of what I’ve done. “I like being a person who is production aware and love helping things come together, whether in office or on set. Every position, every task, gives you an opportunity to better yourself, to help somebody.” As an office PA, for example, Fishman’s helped prepare scripts, create menu books and welcome packs for cast and crew, and assists the production in a variety of other ways.

“That’s part of taking care of the team, making sure they know what’s available,” he says. A cool perk: “One of nicest things about working on films is getting in places you’re otherwise not able to go. I was fortunate as Anne Heche’s personal assistant on 6 Days/7 Nights to be part of a small crew to helicopter out to the North Shore where she and Harrison Ford went up into Nualolo—that was incredible.” A humbling moment—same movie, different location: After finishing a scene on the beach by Kipu

Ranch, Heche, Ford and Director Ivan Reitman are in a meeting when Heche asks Fishman to get her a cold drink and then to hold an umbrella to shade her from the sun. Says Fishman, “So there I was, standing with the umbrella held high while the meeting continued in the hot sun in front of cast and crew lined up around the set.” Contrasting humility with greater responsibility, Fishman says of a recent, local movie project he worked on called Secret of the Crystal Skulls, “I was the production coordinator and first assis-

tant director, the person who helps control the set and gets things ready. As first assistant director, you call ‘Quiet on the set! Ready to go!’ so all is in place for the director to call ‘Action!’" In the end, as the cast and crew of vari-

ous projects depart the scene, Fishman remains on Kaua‘i to play one remaining fun role. Often as productions close, they leave behind surplus items, for example, hair and make-up products, lumber, power strips,

extension cords and more. Fishman was able to help Adam Sandler’s crew donate to Kaua‘i non-profit organizations that will make good use of them. He says, “I felt like Santa Claus in June.”

Adoption Stories Lana is a small, black and tan dog with humble beginnings. Having been found in Koke’e when only a few days old, she was a wild dog with virtually no experience of human contact. Today though, Lana is one of the most famous dogs on Kaua’i. On her many visits to schools, Lana has been introduced to over 6,000 school children by her owner, Carol Everett. This little terrier has blossomed from a shy and frightened puppy to a courageous entertainer and teacher. With Lana’s help, Aunty Carol teaches children how to introduce themselves to dogs by offering a pet handshake where fingers are tucked into the fist for safe keeping. She was last seen with a crowd of rambunctious teenagers at Waimea High School where the students challenged her to perform tricks, like when she waves aloha or will huli after being “shot” by a finger.

ogy and counseling. “We try to tailor the sentence to play into each teen’s strengths and weaknesses and have logical consequences for what they did,” Kuwamura explains. That approach seems to work, given an apology letter from one teen to his victim’s parents: “I did what I did because of anger. After attending Teen Court and anger management classes, I learned how to control my anger and now I truly realized how much I hurt you and

your son.” The teens also benefit from interacting with other youth from around the island, and building relationships with trusted adults, like Kuwamura, who leads the classes, and the local attorneys and judges who volunteer to train the kids for Teen Court duties.

“I’ve had parents say, this was the turning point for my child; now they want to go to college and become a family court judge,” Kuwamura says. “It’s very rewarding. It’s just fantastic work.” For more information call 245-2873 or visit www.haleopio.org.

FIT Barely four months old, Kaua‘i CrossTrain is outdoors and practically at the beach in Kapa‘a. With a tarp covering against the weather and mats on a cement floor, it’s good to go with an outdoor program that delivers fitness that is, by design, broad, general and inclusive. Clients use weights, kettle bells, jump rope, rope climb, do pullups and more. What we do is scale the load and intensity—we don’t change the program. Most people who try this, in a few months will be fitter than they’ve ever been in their lives. Our specialty is not specializing. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease as well as cage fighters with only one month to go before performing in a televised bout. We have clients ranging in age from 12 to 65 years. At Kaua‘i CrossFit, we work at functional fitness, helping people better their lives whether it’s an older person who needs help getting up from the commode to a young kid picking up a heavy backpack. I’ve seen CrossFit Page 22

Featuring Kaua‘i CrossTrain with Jerome Hromiak change lives. One client came in with carpal tunnel syndrome, and through the development of forearm strength with CrossFit training and the pain subsided. A person taking a one-week skiing vacation can do this program and ski through

the week without being sore. Persons with limitations are absolutely welcome here. Class size ranges from five to 10 persons. Check your ego and sensitivities at the door—we’re all here to get a little stronger.

Jerome Hromiak has had 11 knee surgeries and was receiving an experimental biological knee replacement when he learned about CrossFit and chose to make it his mission to spread the word about it. Reach him at 639-3628 or online at Jerome@ kauaicrossfit.com.
