by Léo Azambuja Every August, the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair in Līhu‘e brings us closer to each other. Yes, it is likely the most fun, family-oriented event of the year. But it is also an event where you see everyone.

In no other event on Kaua‘i you give more handshakes, hugs and kisses than in the farm fair. For that, it is a golden opportunity for island businesses and nonprofit organizations to network and showcase their products and services. They really are the backbone of Kaua‘i.

Kudos to the island’s businesses who helped to support this epic event. Also, big kudos to the Kaua‘i Farm Bureau for organizing the best ever fair. The food part of the event went up several notches this year.

How much do we love and wish to honor and preserve Kaua‘i’s Royal Coconut Coast?

Before you answer, let me take you on a virtual trip to Molokai.

In mid-August, I had a chance and the privilege to go back to Molokai, one of my favorite places in the world.

The laidback, simple lifestyle of this beautiful island, plus the friendships I forged while I spent a year working there are what bring me back to the Friendly Island.

Back in 2008, I recorded a few news clips for The Molokai Dispatch newspaper Young coconut trees at Kapuāiwa, Molokai are replacing trees that have lived for more than 150 that were shown at Akaku years, half-century past their average lifespan. This historic grove was planted for King Kamehameha V TV, Maui County’s version of in the 1960s.

laughs with my co-workers – was sitting among skyscraping coconut trees at Kapuāiwa, a historic coconut grove planted for Kamehameha V more than 150 years ago.

Once 10-acres large, this grove was one of Kamehameha V’s favorite places. The people of Molokai still brag the king had a beach house nearby and spent a lot of time on Molokai.

Coconut trees have an average lifespan of 100 years. After that, they have a hard time bringing water all the way up to their crowns, and soon die. But many of those trees at Kapuāiwa are beyond 150 years old, and still going.

To be sure, government officials concerned with safety have roped off the grove at Kapuāiwa. One of my friends said he was out there with his kids recently, when a tree taller than 100 feet fell to the ground. Additionally, many trees have lost their crowns and it’s just a matter of time for them to crash down.

Still, Kapuāiwa is a magical and powerful place. It’s a reminder of a time when Molokai was the favorite island of the last Hawaiian king of the House of Kamehameha.

While on Molokai, I didn’t dare go inside the grove. I didn’t want to get in trouble for trespassing a kapu area; but most importantly, I wasn’t about to get a coconut – or a tree – on my head. But I stood just outside the grove, and just to be see Coast page 26

The coconut tree was one of the most resourceful plants for early Hawaiians. Almost every part of the tree was used for at least one – and in many instances several – purposes. The tree and its fruit provided food, water and materials used in almost every aspect of old Hawaiian society.

“It’s like the giver of life, this tree,” said Keoni Durant, a native Hawaiian who has been sculpting tikis and Hawaiian gods out of coconut tree stumps for 30 years.

With more than 100 carved coconut tree stumps all over Kaua‘i, Durant says his art honors the tree that has given life to someone.

When Capt. Interesting Coconut Facts Every bit of the coconut is used. As a result, coconuts are called the “Tree of Life” and can produce drink, fiber, food, fuel, utensils, musical instruments and much more.

In 16th century, Sir Francis Drake called coconut “nargils,” which was the common term used until the 1700s when the word coconut was established.

It takes 11-12 months for the coconut to mature.

At one time, scientists identified over 60 species of Cocos palms. Today, the coconut is a monotypic with one species, Cocos nucifera.

However, there are over 80 varieties of coconut palms, which are defined by characteristics such as dwarf and tall.

Coconut growing regions are as far north as Hawai‘i and as far south as Madagascar.

The base of the tree’s trunk was used for pahu hula, large hula drums dressed with shark skin. The trunks were also used in making food bowls.

Polished coconut shells were made into pu niu, a small hula drum strapped to the knees for hula. The shells were also used for bowls and ‘awa drinking cups.

The ku‘au, or the base of the leaf stalk, was used in pounding the walls of taro beds.

A thick mix was wrapped in ti leaves and placed in an imu, or underground oven, for 10 hours or more.

Cordage from the coconut husk was called ‘aha. Its fibers were round, coarse and springy. Because it was coarse, the ‘aha could be wrapped around itself without slipping, and its elasticity was good to withstand sudden stress. ‘Aha was also water resistant, though it tended to kink when used as a fish line.

Making ‘aha was labor intensive and the knowledge laid with few experts. Hawaiians used an ‘ōniu (pointed stake fixed on the ground) to extract the husk, which was then soaked in salt water for four weeks, and sometimes several months. This helped in dissolving the gum holding the fibers together.

The shorter fibers were discarded, and the rest was twisted together. Depending on what it would be the purpose of the ‘aha, it could be twisted as a two-ply cord or braided into three to seven plies.

different purposes: In building and fixing canoes, for lashing the ama and for holding stone anchors. Hawaiians attached stone blades to adzes by using braided ‘aha. They also used it to secure in drummaking and to build handles for gourd water bottles.

In early October, the 20th Annual Coconut Festival at Kapa‘a Beach Park will honor the legacy of the coconut, with crafts, games, food, contests, live music and entertainment. On Sept. 30, the Courtyard Kaua‘i at Coconut Beach by Marriott will honor the event with a special dinner featuring celebrity chef Sam Choy and renowned fire dancer Kap Te‘o-tafiti.

Kenny Ishii, who is helping to organize the event, said besides honoring and celebrating the coconut in the Hawaiian culture, the festival represents the history of the Royal Coconut Coast, which includes most of Kaua‘i’s Eastside with its many coconut groves.

“Where in the whole state of Hawai‘i are you going to see a place like this? … Not in Honolulu, not in Maui,” Ishii said. “You look at where Marriott Courtyard is now, you see all the coconut trees …

You look at all the trees, you go, ‘Wow!’ We take it for granted every day we drive by there.”

For those visiting the Coconut Festival, Ishii suggested trying the fresh coconut milk, squeezed on the spot by Te‘o-tafiti.

“That’s the best coconut milk I have ever tasted,” he said, sporting a large grin.

The 20th Annual Coconut Festival, presented by the Kapa‘a Business Association, will be held at Kapa‘a Beach Park Oct. 1 and 2.

Strange how the little island of Kaua‘i, one of the most remote locations in the world, would be the place where Reiki Natural Healing, Usui Shiki Ryoho, decided to be born into the Western World. In 1936, Reiki didn’t choose the larger islands of O‘ahu or Maui. The sacred Japanese practice of Reiki chose the mother island of the Hawaiian chain for birthing this great gift to the children of the Western World.

What is Reiki? If you were to ask Hawayo Takata, the little lady from Kaua‘i who brought Reiki to us from Japan, she was known to say, “It is God power.” How does it work? She would place her hand on you and then remove it and simply say, “Reiki on – Reiki off.” Then she would end the discussion.

Mrs. Takata went to Tokyo, Japan in 1935 for surgery.

However, instead of having the operation, she was healed

by Reiki Natural Healing. Her Reiki practitioner, and later her sensei, Chujiro Hayashi, gave her the explanation of the healing art of Reiki. “After you are initiated into Reiki an automatic flow of healing energy comes through your hands. Whenever I feel the contact, it comes through me to you – these, he held up his hands, are the electrodes, Reiki then revitalizes and restores the balance of your entire system. I receive healing before you do.”

Hawayo Takata assisted many people on Kaua‘i to heal many ailments. She would say, “Reiki can help a person who is sincere in a desire to stop drinking excessively, smoking, to lose or gain

Takata had connected so deeply to the healing energy of Reiki and had shared Reiki with so many people, that when Dr. Hayashi was ready to make his transition, he called his student back to Japan and recognized her as his successor to carry on the oral tradition of Usui Shiki Ryoho as it was entrusted to her. She was recognized as the next lineage bearer of Reiki Natural Healing.

As late as 1970, she was the only Reiki Master teaching in the Western World. Takata was soon to be 70 years old, and felt there needed to be more Reiki Masters to carry on this sacred spiritual discipline. She began to initiate masters.

Before she made her transition in December 1980, two weeks before her 80th birthday, she had initiated 22 Reiki Masters. One of them was her granddaughter Phyllis Lei Furumoto, whom she recognized as the next lineage bearer of Reiki. Today, Phyllis makes her home in Tucson, Ariz.

These masters formed The Reiki Alliance to meet regularly and assist each other to uphold the sacred practice of Reiki Natural Healing as it was entrusted to us. This organization continues today, and is now an international, professional organization of Reiki Masters.

Waist-to-Hip Ratio “Waist circumference reflects the amount of total body fat and intra-abdominal body fat a person has,” Richardson says.

Waistlines measuring larger than 35 inches for women and more than 40 inches for men are considered indicative of abdominal obesity, a risk factor for heart disease and diabetes.

Jump-start the weight-loss process by eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins; avoiding processed foods; focusing on proper portion sizes; and exercising regularly.

Kau Kau Delights Kalapaki Joe’s Po‘ipū

Kalapaki Joe’s is the Westernmost Sports Bar in the United States. Not just football and basketball, the big ones, but all the sports: extreme sports, skateboard, snow sports, hunting and fishing, soccer, MMA, the Olympics, boxing, baseball, surfing and all other watersports.

I bet if you ask for it, they can call it up on one of the 20 TVs hanging around at the Po‘ipū location. If you can get it in Hawai‘i, you can watch it at Kalapaki Joe’s. You can even see the ocean from the dining room, and overlook a tennis court under the bay windows.

Football is by far the biggest draw, with professional games on Monday, Thursday and Sunday, and college ball on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. I probably didn’t need to tell most of you that, but it’s news to me: Sunday, Sept. 11, is the first Sunday game, and people will be lined up early to get a seat and watch the game in KJ’s friendly setting.

Owner Jody Valente describes the Kalapaki Joe’s Happy Hour as “aggressive.” Happy Hour is 3-6 p.m. daily with $2 off draft beers and house wine, $2 off appetizers, $5 cocktails, $3 fish tacos, and $1 shrimp tempura! And my personal and slightly embarrassing weakness: 25-cent chicken wings!

Jody has been in the restaurant business his whole life.

His first job was as a busboy at Brennecke’s and he’s done every restaurant job there is. When thinking about his own restaurant, Jody says, “I want my place to be like the garage where you see all your friends hanging out,” a comfortable and inviting hangout. Kalapaki Joe’s started in 2008, and is now a locals-focused sports bar with lots of regulars and a longtime staff.

Jody is a hands-on restaurateur. He came up with food and drink recipes, the art for the menus and the building’s design.

He made the tables and all the repairs. The restaurant is well cared, with an open floor plan, high ceilings, wide windows, sports memorabilia and comfy couches.

Kalapaki Joe’s menu is a grand tour of items from all over, with three choices of poke, avocado, wasabi, nachos, Brussels sprouts, tacos, short ribs, hearty salads, fresh fish, burgers, sandwiches and many more lunch and dinner dishes.

Kalapaki Joe’s is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with Happy Hour from 3-6 p.m. Breakfast is served 7-11 a.m.

Wednesday-Saturday they host live Hawaiian music.

Kaua‘i’s Conservation Efforts Continue to Shine

This month, the world’s largest environmental and nature conservation event is being held in Honolulu. The selection of Hawai‘i as host for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s World Conservation Congress brings attention to islands as small scale representations of environmental issues facing the planet.

Kauai’s conservation efforts provide important conservation backdrop to the WCC. The National Tropical Botanical Garden recently spearheaded a statewide group to target over half of Hawai‘i’s native plants for the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. The koki‘o ke‘oke‘o (Hibiscus waimea subsp. Hannarae) story is a wonderful illustration of an iconic Kaua‘i plant on the list. You are probably well familiar with the beautiful

insurance policy for rare plants. It involves harvesting seeds, fruits and other clonal materials, storing them in places like seed banks, growing plants in nurseries, and then outplanting them in protected habitat.

Today, NTBG has material represented ex situ from all wild populations of koki‘o ke‘oke‘o, thanks to a collaborative effort between NTBG and the Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife.

This is where the research of Susan Deans, Horticultural Intern from NTBG comes in. Working with conservation biologist Seana Walsh, Deans had a research goal to determine whether the koki‘o ke‘oke‘o require a pollinator (i.e. an insect or bird) to set viable seed; and if outplanted populations are being effectively pollinated.

After determining through several controlled pollination treatments that koki‘o ke‘oke‘o does indeed need a pollinator, the “fun” part of Deans’ research was to observe several of the outplanted flowers at Limahuli Garden’s upper preserve to “catch pollinators, and nefarious visitors, in the act.” According to Deans, “all of the visitors were nonnative and most were not pollinators, but nectar thieves.” These included ants, Japanese

white eyes, and honeybees that would feed on the nectar but not come into contact with the plant’s reproductive organs to pollinate them.

Interestingly, the most numerous potential pollinators observed on the koki‘o ke‘oke‘o were three nonnative species of hawkmoths. While she didn’t observe any visiting the plants, Deans’ concludes the native Hawaiian hawkmoths were probably the original pollinators to which the species is adapted. Throughout this year, researchers will continue to observe the “floral visitors” to gain a better understanding of this beautiful flower’s pollination ecology and help save the species from extinction.

ornamental hibiscus flower, landscaping countless home and commercial gardens. What you may not know is these versions are nonnative, and that Kaua‘i has its own endemic hibiscus that is critically endangered due to invasive species, feral pigs and a possible loss of pollinators.

Koki‘o ke‘oke‘o is found exclusively in wet forests of three valleys on Kaua‘i’s North Shore and Nāpali Coast. There are possibly only 100 individuals remaining in the wild. It has a beautiful white, pink and deep red palate combined with a rich fragrance. Like other endemic plants, it plays a key role in the ecosystem, and co-evolved with mutually beneficial native birds and insects. As plant and animal are dependent on each other for food and pollination; if one goes extinct, it often means extinction for the other.

In the world of plant conservation, it is important to not only preserve what is in the wild, but to pursue ex situ strategies with eventual in situ reintroduction. According to the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation, ex situ conservation is an Page 20

Mani’s Manners

By Pam Brown Linda was exhausted. Her beloved part-airedale dog, Mani, had taken to barking outside the house most evenings, refusing to come indoors, keeping Linda awake night after night. It had gotten so bad that Linda was cancelling business appointments because she simply could not stay awake during the day.

Friends recommended tethering the free-spirited Mani to a chain, making her wear a shock collar or giving her away.

Animal Chat All of those options broke Linda’s heart, but she didn’t know what to do. “I just can’t go through another night of not getting any sleep,” she said.

When I tuned into Mani to let her know that her barking was keeping Linda awake all night, she was apologetic, but it was hard for her to consider coming indoors. The delicious feelings of complete

quiet. Mani asked if she could stay outside and “bark quietly,” demonstrating to me how she would bark in “whisper tones.” We quickly reached agreement that would be fine.

The next step was getting Mani to come into the house most evenings, as she once had, when Linda called her. Mani said if she could exchange one form of joy for another, she would be willing.

Mani showed me that her only other favorite thing, besides being outdoors, was her emotional connection with Linda. She showed me images of herself curled up on a carpet indoors in the evening, while Linda sat nearby, and gave me the feeling of tremendous love and contentment in those moments.

I explained to Mani that Linda calls her in at night so they can spend that kind of quality time together.

Mani had never before made the connection between being called to come in and her time spent with Linda.

“I enjoy myself more in the dark because it’s mysterious. It’s kind of rabbity,” she said, showing me images of herself chasing imaginary rabbits.

Linda said Mani is also excellent at keeping pigs off their property, a task in which the dog takes great pride.

“I’m sorry my barking annoys you so much,” she said. “I thought I was making joyful noise, but I did not know how barking affects people.”

When I shared with Mani the feeling humans have when we have not slept all night, she quickly understood the reasoning behind Linda’s request for Page 22

It’s been several months since I spoke with Mani, and Linda tells me that Mani stays outside all day, barking to her heart’s content while waiting and watching for pigs. Then she comes inside every day around 5 p.m., to spend time with Linda.

“She is an amazing companion,” Linda says.

“She’s a really important part of my life.”

Nature‘s Net Flings Beauty Across the Island

By Virginia Beck Nature flings its net wide, spreading beauty to capture eyes and hearts. The gift of showers in the early mornings gives way to rainbows and cascades of blossom everywhere. The late afternoon creates more rainbows just before sunset, and glorious colors, a dramatic finish to a typical day in Paradise.

Shower trees create splashes of color, and shed a whole fiesta of confetti blossoms across walkways. Along the bypass road to Po‘ipū, the rainbow of colors is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon. Kaua‘i is celebrating summer in all its finest floral

Malamalama abundance. From Bon Dances to Tahiti Fest, music, dance, and great food are shared with laughter.

Look to the mountains, and note where the lighter, yellow-green traces the wanderings of our waters to the sea.

Streams carve the narrow, twisting ravines, and sharp ridges that shape our island. The kukui trees have round nuts that follow water and gravity, downhill, spreading more green.

The tree is widely found throughout Polynesia, Southeast Asia and Africa, but it is the official state tree, and the tree that represents the island of Molokai. The kukui is revered in Hawaiian culture for its many uses and its spiritual significance. One of the canoe plants brought by Polynesian explorers up to 1,000 years ago, it honors Lono, the god of agriculture and fertility.

It was originally used as an adornment for the ali‘i.

Kukui were not to be planted at the front of a house, traditionally, for fear of revealing too much of the owner’s soul and wisdom.

Better to plant it safely behind the house.

This valuable plant was used completely.

Leaves and blossoms are used in haku lei to adorn our heads.

Leaves are used as poultices for infection.

The beautiful polished nuts make lei of every color. Real lei have variations and imperfections, requiring hours of sanding and polishing to make extremely valuable, heirlooms of honor.

The nut you see was hidden, gnarled and wrinkled inside a smooth, green, perfectly round outer husk.

The high oil content of the nuts provided a rich skin lubricant, a soothing oil for burns, and for calming the waves so fishermen got a better view of the fish. Hawaiians crushed the nuts and used the oil to waterproof bowls, implements and fishing nets. Try using it on a coconut bowl.

They also made hand torches by stringing nuts on the ribs of palm leaves. Impaled on a skewer, each nut burned for 3-5 minutes.

Did you know the kukui was once used as a measure of time?

Kukui nuts can also be used as a condiment, chopped and roasted, ina mona, sometimes mixed with seaweed or raw fish. The seeds are toxic when raw, and must be roasted to avoid stomach problems. The resourceful Hawaiians used all of nature’s gifts most respectfully.

The inner bark of the tree was also used to produce a reddish brown dye for kapa, our fabric made through laborious pounding of wauke, or Hawaiian mulberry.

Once a measure of time, today they reveal the timeless net of nature, spreading around the globe. Our ancestors used this plant from Uganda to India, as well as Polynesia and Asia.

Nature doesn’t hold back, gives freely and holds us all, connected.

We are woven into one net of relationship.

The kukui spreads a message of hope, healing and protection for all people. Aloha oe.

Hey, Charlie Darwin

— Charles Darwin, On the Origin of Species Where is Charles Darwin when you need him? Well, he is in my head, where has been stuck now for a couple of weeks.

This story begins in the Beginning, the scientific one. It is about our connection to all things living. The chain of life has billions of links, each one delicately clipped to the next. The integrity of these linkages is crucial to our future. We have operated forever as if we are independent of all other life forms, our actions absent of consequences. To make matters even worse, we keep repeating our missteps with each other and our environment.

Mind and the Motorcycle

I am one of those minds that are kind of restless, always looking around. From my perspective, it is hard to imagine when things were more screwed. I have lost count of the wars we are fighting and who the good guys are. We have a global homeless crisis up around 60 million people and there is no damn reason for it. Speaking of the globe, we have manhandled our environment and its resources, likely causing

irreparable damage for hundreds of years, if not thousands. If I continue with this list, I will have to go home, pull down the shades and throw the covers over my head.

Even if things are no worse than they have been and we are simply living in a communications revolution flooding us with information, things still suck. It would be helpful if we could at least agree the world could be in much better shape than it is right now. One more thing, can we also agree human behavior is the cause of all our crises?

According to Charlie, there is a connection between all life forms, having begun with a mysterious spark that birthed a single cell.

Scientists will go nuts trying to put a precise time stamp on that miracle and it may just continue to be a matter of faith that it somehow happened.

I am not sure how much time any of us devote to the reality that all living things are related in some unbelievably complicated manner. The Buddha had this idea of something called Dependent Co-Arising. It’s the old story of the butterfly flapping its wings in Ghana, creating a draft on the neck of some guy walking the streets of Brooklyn.

Many of us seem to be missing the point that we are all in this together, and that means everyone, regardless of where we live, what language we speak, what God we worship and this list is endless. While I am at it, let’s not forget the Orangutan, the Squid and the Robin.

The history of the upright, two-legged folks like us goes back to a primitive time when we were at the very beginning of our lineage.

In the absence of sufficient grey matter, conflicts were resolved with violence. To this day, it is still our favorite resolution of choice. Accepting our intricate, interconnected existence with all things, this violence has

a devastating effect that goes far beyond the act itself.

Here is where Charlie D. comes to the rescue, offering tangible hope for our future. He was likely best known for the idea that strength and intelligence are not the keys to survival; it is the ability to adapt to change.

Evolution is a gradual process that still requires a beginning. Our lives depend upon our willingness to get started on achieving the promise of the Homo sapiens species or we need to make room at the top of the ladder for a more adaptable one to stand guard.

Transformational Achievement

By Tommy Noyes Hawai‘i Gov. David Ige presented on Aug. 16 the Hawai‘i Energy Policy Forum’s Transformational Achievement in Advancing Clean Energy in Collaborative Problem Solving award to Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and the county’s team of planners.

Established in 2002 as a unique experiment in collaborative energy planning and policy making, the Hawai‘i Energy Policy Forum is an organization of more than 40 representatives from

Community electric utilities, oil and natural gas suppliers, environmental and community groups, renewable energy industry, academia, and federal, state and local government – all working together to seek smart energy solutions to sustain a healthy, prosperous and secure Hawai‘i.

The forum reviewed nominations from around the state and found the Transportation Partnerships Revitalizing Līhu‘e Town to be the most compelling example of a collaborative effort. This award recognizes and thanks the County of Kaua‘i for its exceptional achievement in its work on Transportation Partnerships Revitalizing Līhu‘e Town, which advances clean energy for the benefit of Hawai‘i’s people. Partners identified in this county-coordinated effort include the Līhu‘e Business Association, Get Fit Kaua‘i, and Kaua‘i Path.

To put this effort into an historical perspective, a controversial

topic of discussion on Kaua‘i through the 1960s and into the 1970s was, should Kaua‘i follow the land use policies in effect in the rest of Hawai‘i that allow high-rise buildings, or should we choose to restrict building heights? A lot of money was at stake on the decision. Some argued that high-rise hotels would maximize prosperity and profits from industrial tourism, while others passionately defended preserving open-view planes and sustaining the unique rural character of each of our communities.

Look around you, compare the view in Po‘ipū to anywhere in Honolulu or Maui’s Kā‘anapali. You’ll see how that matter was decided. With only three high-rise towers by Kalapakī Beach being the exception, no buildings on Kaua‘i are taller than four stories. Public process a generation ago determined the land use policies that have shaped the environment we live in today.

The point here is that policy decisions eventually have profound impacts on our daily lives, and the policies we adopt today have long-term effects.

Today, a hot topic is global warming. The State of Hawai‘i has endorsed an ambitious set of milestones to reach by 2030.

These goals include community-wide changes to shift energy consumption away from fossil fuels and toward more sustainable sources while seeking greater efficiencies. The local policies we work on today will shape our environmental footprint a generation from now.

The County of Kaua‘i has been working for about two decades now on plans and projects that enhance the unique character of

Growing ‘Best of Show’ Daylilies

By Richard E. Peck We should have been suspicious when the daylily named Little Grapette was taller than any rose bush in our garden. In catalogues, it’s a foot all, pleasantly purple but not rich, royal and velvety. We’d grown a winner! Something was going on.

These were Mainland Daylilies, not “Hawaiian Daylilies” (sometimes called Naked Ladies) or Amaryllis.

There are secrets to earning neighbors’ garden-envy. A pinch of sugar in the sand when you plant bulbs can encourage rooting.

Weekly spraying with liquid tomato fertilizer brightens the blossoms.

there and feel the mana, the energy, of this peaceful yet powerful place is an awesome experience.

At that moment, I imagined how special this place is to Molokai residents.

This contemplation brought me right back home and made me imagine how special our own coconut groves on Kaua‘i’s Eastside are to us.

A few years ago, I was sad to see the Kaua‘i Planning Commmission approve Longs Drugs to build a new store in the middle of a centenary coconut grove in Waipouli.

The arborist report to the commissioners said most trees had reached 100 years old and would soon die.

Despite my skepticism that store owners would replant trees to try to stay true to the grove‘s original looks, I now commend them for doing the right thing. We lost some centenary trees that were about to die, but we gained new trees that will keep the legacy of the Royal Coconut Coast alive.

In a conversation last month with Kenny Ishii, owner of Ono Family Restaurant in Kapa‘a, I asked him how important to us is the history and legacy of the Royal Coconut Coast.

His answer was, “It’s as important as we want to keep it.”

I realize Kenny was simply telling me we should to take action if we want to preserve it. Taking an active stance to promote the culture is the best way to keep it alive. And Page 26

Kaua‘i Business Marketplace The Kaua‘i Store

By Léo Azambuja The Kaua‘i Store opened its doors for the first time in July 2015. Since then, this Kapa‘a store has become an outlet for at least 150 vendors, showcasing more than 1,500 products. And what’s more important, it’s mostly about local products – 95 percent of them crafted right here on the island.

“We really needed a place for local people to showcase their stuff,” said owner Eric Burton, adding he didn’t “go cheap” while building the store’s décor.

He wanted to make sure it would look classy enough to highlight the products displayed. “It makes everything pop.”

Burton said the whole idea for opening the store was about connecting visitors – about 90 percent of his clientele – to local residents who are manufacturing products on the island.

“Our visitors come in and they just are dying for something authentic,” Burton said. Many stores on the island, he said, sell products that have the words Kaua‘i on top and Made in China on the bottom, and it’s all the same stuff.

With an incredibly passionate energy, hardly leaving any room in between his words, Burton goes through a list of all his vendors; and he knows them all by first and last names.

“It’s really a community store,” he said.

The range of products offered at The Kaua‘i Store is indeed quite impressive. In one corner, there’s a vast selection of books written by local authors. Throughout the store, you’ll find several displays and shelves with an array of locally made jewelry, from casual to dressy.

Coconuts in a Nutshell

By Jan TenBruggencate If you love the look of a coconut, you shouldn’t prune your coconut trees, but if you don’t prune them, you shouldn’t stand under them, either.

A swaying palm never looks as good as when it has its full complement of two or three dozen fronds, ranging from bright new spikes erect in the middle to yellowing, tattered flags draped down along the trunk.

The heavy load of nuts gives a coconut in the breeze a languorous sway, a complement to a slow summer day.

But there’s danger here.

An untrimmed tree loses a heavy frond with a rattle and a thud, but it will lose a stalk of nuts all at once: a ba-da-babump that sends a shudder through the earth. Beware being underneath.

Kumu Haumana It’s not a rare occurrence. Coconut palms will drop a frond a month and 50 to 75 nuts a year.

Which, of course, is why palms in commercial places – parks and parking lots and resort grounds – are trimmed of their nuts and their older fronds. Those trimmed palms, freed of much of their high-altitude weight, are stiffer and quicker in their movement.

A lot of folks prefer planting a dwarf coconut, which grows slower, and produces nuts lower. So, there’s less of a risk of a

Departures are from the West Side’s Kikiaola Harbor in Waimea, the closest harbor to the Na Pali Coast.

Snorkeling takes place at one of three different locations depending on currents, water clarity and conditions permitting.
