Where is GEOGRAPHICAL CONDITIONS Formentera is the smallest inhabited island in the Balearic archipelago. It is just 2 nautical miles south of the island of Ibiza, although the distance between the ports of Ibiza and La Savina (Formentera) is 12 miles. Although it is a small island, its indented shape means it has a very long coast (82km) in proportion to its surface area. Along the coast, there are many large and small beaches and numerous coves and solitary corners where you can lose yourself. The island of Formentera is small but accessible and comfortable; you can cover a large part of it by bicycle, through its green paths, its woods of pine and Savin juniper, its salt marshes and its rural interior. The island of Formentera is outstanding for its great environmental beauty and for its still wild landscape of dunes and beaches, conserved in wonderful condition, declared a World Heritage site in 1999.

When you disembark on Formentera, you will breathe that air of peace and tranquillity that characterises it and makes it a distinct place. You will immediately be captivated by its waters, unique because of their unequalled transparency and turquoise colour, evoking tropical regions. Thanks to the posidonia oceanica meadows, the largest in the Mediterranean, they have been declared by the Unesco a marine World Heritage site (unique in the Mediterranean). How to get to the islands? Formentera is a real island, as it does not have an airport and is only accessible by sea. It takes 25 minutes to sail Where is from the ports of Ibiza and La Savina. Art and Crafts LA MOLA ART AND CRAFTS FAIR This was founded in 1984 and runs from the beginning of May until the holiday on 12 October, on Wednesdays and Sundays at La Mola. It began through the private initiative of various artists and craftspeople and it is now fighting to continue with its initial concept: to display, promote and sell crafts, creating an alternative lifestyle possible in our industrialised society. Over the years, both the number of sellers and the number of visitors have increased and it has become one of the island’s main tourist attractions and a meeting point on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, seasoned with music, jugglers and entertainers, where you can find real works of art as well as souvenirs of the island with the character of the hands that have made them, with the authentic character of a local, original piece in an increasingly globalised world. WHAT YOU CAN FIND

and distinguish local crafts. You will find traditional crafts: baskets, “espardenyes” (esparto grass sandals), textiles with wool from the island... traditionally made foods; cheese, wine, oil, honey, dried figs, dried fish... And artistic crafts; jewellery, glass, textiles, ceramics, leather, engravings, hand weaving... Many of these workshops can be visited if you consult the map of workshops on the tourist map or talk directly to the craftspeople. Monuments 1 - CHURCH OF SANT FRANCESC XAVIER

4 -CAN BLAI ROMAN CASTELLUM

The appearance of this church is sober and the thickness of its walls is a reminder of its function as a fortress against invaders. The church was finished in 1738 and it stands in the capital of the island opposite the town hall.

It has a rectangular floor plan with towers at the corners and at the access gate - five in all. It stands at km 10 of the road between La Savina and La Mola and on a high site, showing its inhabitants’ interest in controlling the whole coast.

2 - SA TANCA VELLA

5 - LA MOLA MOLĂ? VEL

Built in the second half of the 14th century and dedicated to San Valero, this chapel is small and covered by a barrel vault. It stands in the town of San Francesc Xavier and has been municipal property since 1986 .

This windmill dates from 1778 and nowadays not Orly preserves its original appearance but also its purpose, as its machinery works just as it did centuries ago.

3 - CAP DE BARBERIA MEGALITHIC SETTLEMENT The Cap de Barberia remains prove that the island was inhabited since the year 2,000 BC. They consist of 3 different sites that have provided important finds like pottery, bones and a piece of bronze.

6 - CANA COSTA MEGALITHIC SITE This dates from between 2000 and 1600 BC. It is an important site showing human presence on the island at a very early period. It is well constructed and consists of a burial chamber, an access passage and an exterior structure of concentric forts.

Beaches BEACHES WITH FLAGS Formentera offers more than 20km of white sand and clear water with surprising combinations of blue. On the island you can find everything from the typical lonely cove to dream beaches, but on all of them you can enjoy the peace and quiet of a natural environment protected from overcrowding.

Es Cal贸 de Sant Agust铆

Es Arenals

Small refuge for fishermen, Small refuge for fishermen, where you can taste the sea in a maritime environment. The beach is small and the La Mola cliffs can be seen on the right. We recommend visiting the area and the nearby restaurants.

Es Arenals Beach of sand mixed with small shells brought in by the sea and gentle waves, in contrast to the other beaches on Formentera. Located in the Mitjorn area and with refreshment services and water sports.

Beaches If there is something that makes Formentera different from other Mediterranean destinations, it is its beauty and the absence of buildings from most of its coast. The commitment of several decades to sustainable development has made it possible to enjoy heavenly beaches today, but with all the services and safety of a western destination.

Es Cavall d’en Borras

Ses Platgetes

Es Cavall d’en Borras beach is the nearest beach to the port of La Sabina, which can be reached on foot or by cycling along the coast. It is a peaceful beach with crystal clear water that has views of the port, Es Vedrà and the yachts and boats anchored off it. Behind it there is a beautiful wood of Savin juniper where you can take shelter from the sun at the hottest times.

Cala Saona

Es Pujols

This small beach, despite its limited size (it is hardly 140m long) is one of the most beautiful you can visit. Its characteristic tranquillity and beauty make this cove a place not to be missed for tourists. It is surrounded, of course, by restaurants and bars, where you can eat or cool down with a drink while you enjoy the marvellous views it offers of the nearby island of Ibiza or, without going so far, the coast of Punta Pedrera or the lovely Punta Rasa cliffs, which can easily be accessed on foot as they are hardly 10 minutes from the beach.

Magnificent beach in the Magnificent beach in the tourist area of Es Pujols, where you can find all the services: accommodation, shopping, restaurants, water sports. It is separated from the residential area by a pedestrian promenade where hippy souvenir stalls are put up in the evening. Es Pujols beach is made up of stretches of sand and stretches of lowlying rocks where you can find the fishermen’s huts, where they keep their boats. In front of the beach you can make out small islets, offering beautiful views. A quiet beach for the whole family to enjoy. There is also a ramp and chairs adapted for disabled people to go in the water.

Beaches Illetes The beaches of Illetes, at the northern tip of the island and the nearest to the island of Espalmador (just 150m away) are the most visited by tourists and therefore the busiest. This area can be reached in any vehicle, although it is recommended to walk or cycle there to better enjoy the landscape and to contribute to its environmental protection, because of the constant passage of people. In addition, part of this area cannot be accessed with vehicles, only on foot, because of the irregular ground. The Illetes area is one of the most complete in terms of leisure facilities: water sports (sailing, sky sailing, etc.), restaurants, kiosks, deck chairs, sunshades; basically everything you need to enjoy a whole day on the beach.

There is also a seagoing boat service linking this area with the port of La Sabina and the island of Espalmador, which makes transport and access to other places of interest on the island much easier.

Length: 500 metres Orientation: West SERVICES

Llevant

Migjorn

Also at the northern tip of the Also at the northern tip of the island, but in the eastern part, as its name indicates. It is also a large beach and, because it is in the area nearest to Illetes, it is quite busy. However, because of its length it is possible to find quieter, lonelier places although, of course, there are still restaurants and beach bars. Its proximity to Illetes makes it possible to walk around all the beaches in the north of the island.

IIt can be said that Migjorn beach is one of the biggest on the island, as its sand stretches along a large part of the southern coast, almost from La Mola to Es Cap de Barbaria. These two points, which are quite a way from one another, can both be seen from this beach. Its large length and geographical position make this beach one of the least busy and it is therefore one of the most peaceful on the island. This does not mean, however, that there are not typical restaurants and bars right beside the beach.

Charming Both Formentera and the islands surrounding it are known for their beaches and clear water, but if we go to the inland woods we can find a variety of landscapes offered by the island.

Estany des Peix

La Mola Lighthouse

The Estany des Peix is a small lagoon with a narrow opening to the sea, allowing small boats in to anchor there. It has stretches of beach where it is possible to swim. It is ideal for water sports with boats of low draught: windsurfing, kayaking, sailing. We recommend going around it to enjoy its natural environment.

Many visitors consider La Mola lighthouse a magical place, and it is described as such by the famous writer Jules Verne in some of his works. La Mola lighthouse, standing on the highest part of the island, has served and still serves as an essential guide for countless sailors sailing its waters and enjoying the majestic view offered by the cliffs where the plateau meets the sea.

Corners There are areas and landscapes that must be visited to really discover the beauty of the island; these include, for example, the lighthouses at La Mola and Es Cap de Barberia, and other areas of equally rich landscape.

Cap de Barbaria lighthouse Es Cap de Barbaria is a heavenly place formed by rocks, bringing together a feeling of enormous loneliness and freedom. You need to visit and walk here to realise how majestic it is. Finally, if you reach the very end of it, you will see where the lighthouse stands, a place where a unique sunset can be enjoyed as the sea and sky blend in reddish tones on the horizon. If you still feel like walking, you can visit the nearby watchtower lighthouse that once protected the island from invaders.

Punta de Sa Pedrera Visiting the coast, we will find Punta Pedrera, where strange and unusual rock formations make up a desert of stone known as Sa Pedrera which, where it meets the sea, has been christened the “natural swimming pools. Where the stone needed for building was once extracted, there is now a stretch of deformed rock and quarry, which is very interesting for tourists. If you are lucky enough to be able to sail along the coast, you can enjoy views and cliffs cut by magnificent half submerged caves and, at the same time, you will get a complete view of the island of Ibiza.

Active Tourism ACTIVE TOURISM Formentera is not only the last paradise in the Mediterranean, where you can enjoy peace and relax, it also has many opportunities for active tourism and offers unbeatable conditions for water sports, especially diving, because of the transparency and warm temperature of the sea. In addition, the unusual shape of the island facilitates sailing and windsurfing and kayak every day of the year. For fans of walking and cycle touring, the island has properly signed green circuits running through areas of special landscape interest. DIVING Information on diving conditions. General features The island of Formentera has unbeatable characteristics for diving. Ibiza and Formentera (the Pitiusa Islands) have surprisingly transparent and colourful waters. Their coasts form one of the few well-preserved corners of the Mediterranean. There is a good reason why the Freus

Marine Reserve of Ibiza and Formentera is located here. It is the only natural area in the whole Mediterranean Sea included on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Concerning diving, the first thing to highlight is the excellent visibility (up to 50 metres) and the variety of landscapes characterising the area: caves, walls with sea fans, pieces of wrecks, shallow dives with very beautiful landscapes, posidonia prairies considered the best preserved in the Mediterranean, etc. Visibility characteristics Visibility in the water varies depending on the time of year, ranging from 15 to 50 metres. Water temperature characteristics The climate is very good throughout the year, which makes diving possible throughout the season, with maximum temperatures of 30 degrees in summer, 22 degrees in spring and autumn and 15 degrees in winter. Variety of landscapes The main characteristic of diving on Formentera is the

great variety of underwater landscapes that can be found in such a small area. In a few miles to the north of the island you can dive and find walls, wrecks, caves, deep dives with sea fans, shallow dives, dives in posidonia prairies, etc. SCHOOLS Vellmari: Port La Savina Tel. 971 32 21 05 www.vellmari.com Orca Sub: Hotel Formentera Playa y Club Maryland playa de Mitjorn Tel. 639 60 18 39 www.orcasub.com Blue Adventure: Port La Savina C/. kayaking. Its 69km of coast, of which 40 of which are sandy coast, and its location to the south of the island of Ibiza make it a dream setting for enjoying sailing. The distances are short enough so that you can move from the south of the island to the north in a couple of hours, or make an unforgettable trip to the island of Ibiza in just 2 hours. The turquoise blue of its waters, the alternation of the vertical walls of cliffs and beaches of white sand form an idyllic landscape for sailing. The clarity and colour of its waters mean that sailing less than a mile off the coast seems like flying metres high above a blue colour in which the brownish shades of the rocks alternate with the dark greens of the banks of posidonia. As for sailing for lovers of dinghies, the island offers the opportunity to find a la carte conditions. This is a phenomenon you can only find on some Caribbean islands and on Formentera. The prevailing winds are from an easterly direction in summer and a westerly direction in winter. The island has a beach 3km long with water on both sides facing north to south, with an intermediate step between the island of Formentera and the

Active Tourism

and

Active Tourism islet of Espalmador. Because of this, the wind means that, during the summer, the eastern face of the beach has waves and the western face has constant wind from the land, with little surf and calm sea. But, sailors who prefer gusty wind and rougher conditions can find them by sailing just two miles to the north or south of this beach. To the north, around the islet of Espalmador and to the south, around the cliffs of Punta Pedrera. During the summer, the winds are usually light or average, from 5-15 knots. But they are never less than this and rarely greater. During the winter it is different, as the two extremes – calms or storms with winds greater than 30 knots – can be encountered. The latter are more common than calms. In summary, it is a paradise for family cruising and for beginners in the summer and for expert sailors in the winter. This island offers just as good conditions for practice as for the technical perfection of this sport. Its conditions are so wonderful that the best woman sailor in the world of all time (Teresa Zabell) decided to come here to set up her training base. This confirms the island as one of the best anywhere in Spain for highlevel sailing, and it would be a shame not to make the most of it for this good purpose.

Given the characteristics of Formentera, it is clear that the ideal means of transport are walking and cycling, which, as well as avoiding pollution, makes it possible to make entirely peaceful visits to hidden places that would otherwise go unnoticed. So that you, our friend and visitor, have the chance to do this, we provide you with information about the existence of a series of paths which can be visited either on bicycle or on foot so you can admire landscapes you have never seen before and get into contact with nature. While we recommend their use, we would ask for your cooperation, respecting the environment, not leaving rubbish and taking notice of the suggestions both here and on the indicator boards on the island while using these paths.
