Lynn Jackson Caring for the Community

Hospital has tripled in size since 2002 By Adlen Robinson Most people don’t know their calling in life until they’re well into adulthood. Some may never figure it out. That wasn’t the case for Lynn Jackson, administrator of Northside Hospital-Forsyth, who was fortunate enough to determine her calling at a young age. “I’m not sure I always knew I would be a nurse, but I definitely knew I wanted to do something to help others,” said Jackson, a Florida native who grew up in Atlanta. From the time she was a young girl, Jackson cared for her chronically ill mother. “I remember riding with her in an ambulance when I was about 8 years old,” she said. “And even though it was scary and she was so sick, I remember the good and almost exciting feeling of being a part of those January | February 2016

helping her.” Jackson began volunteering as a “candy striper” in high school and found working in the hospital just felt right. “I delivered the real mail to patients, that was long before email,” she said with a laugh. During those years as a volunteer, Jackson loved helping the nurses as much as the patients. And it was during that time the goal to be a nurse was solidified. “I always felt completely comfortable in the hospital environment,” she said. “Early on, I felt a sense of community about it.” Jackson described herself as “laser focused” when it came to her career. After earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing from what was then known as the Medical College of Georgia, Jackson took on the world of nursing and all things hospital with full vigor. Joining the Georgia Baptist Medical Center in 1991 as the assistant director of surgery, Jackson quickly moved up to vice president of nursing at the facility in downtown Atlanta. Shannon Kitchens owns Sage Clothing. In 2014, she opened a location at the Avalon in Alpharetta.

Sage Clothing

Boutique offers trendy, classic styles By Adlen W. Robinson

Sage Clothing owner Shannon Kitchens knew from a young age she wanted to do something in the fashion industry. “I always loved fashion and thought I might design clothes,” she said. Though she certainly has an eye for fashion, Kitchens found her entrepreneurial drive pull her to the retail end of the industry. In 1997, at age 23, Kitchens opened Sage Clothing, an upscale boutique in Dunwoody. Prior to opening Sage, Kitchens attended AIU in Atlanta and spent a semester in Los Angeles, going on to earn a degree in fashion marketing and design. While in L.A., Kitchens marveled at the numerous ladies boutiques, which at the time were few and far between in Atlanta. After the success of her first shop, Kitchens opened a second Sage Clothing in Buckhead in 2001. A few years later, she moved the Dunwoody store to Midtown. The boutiques continued to thrive, offering customers both trendy and classic clothing, accessories and all things ladies apparel.

“When my leases came up, I decided to consolidate into one brick and mortar store,” she said. After marrying husband James in 2004, the couple went on to have two sons, Aiden and Asher. Sage Clothing opened in Forsyth County in 2008 at what was then The Avenue of Forsyth outdoor shopping mall. She relocated the business to the Avalon in nearby January | February 2016

Sage also offers an online store (www.sageclothing.com) for customers who prefer to shop from home. Sage Clothing appeals to the sophisticated customer, women who want the latest stylish clothing and accessories from brands they know and love. “I used to travel to L.A. frequently to shop for the ‘We get new store. Owner, Sage Clothing “We get new arrivals in every week, so we always have new things for customers to see.” Kitchens went on to say that Sage carries trendy, fashion-forward clothes, but also items that are quite functional. She also tries to carry items that are high quality, but reasonably priced. “Except for some premium items, most of our items are under $100,” she said. Whether you’re looking for the perfect pair of blue jeans, trendy T-shirt or a fashionable tote or hat, Sage Clothing is a great place to find a chic outfit.

What’s on tap at

Jekyll Brewing By Sydney N. Robinson

Although I was born and raised in Cumming, I lived in Nashville, Tenn., for three years in my early 20s. Nashville is a city of never-ending nightlife, culture, incredible restaurants and, oh yeah, the best live music scene in the world. Returning to Georgia, I moved to Alpharetta, where I was determined to find some of the hottest and trendiest places the metro Atlanta area has to offer. And as a small business owner myself, I am always mindful of supporting and patronizing as many local places as possible. Shortly after arriving in Alpharetta, I caught wind of Jekyll Brewing. I saw it in grocery stores, bars and restaurants. Just about every person I met

14 m North Atlanta Magazine

told me I had to visit the tap room for t h e “ U l t i m a t e C r a f t B r ew i n g Experience.” Not knowing what to expect, I set out on my first Georgia brewery adventure on a Saturday night. Pulling into an office park off Windward Parkway, I wondered if my GPS was broken. The outside of Jekyll definitely doesn’t do justice to the inside. The front room offers a fun and inviting vibe, with live music (perks of a Saturday night), and ping pong, Jenga, pinball and video games to pass the time while enjoying a beer and/or waiting on a tour. I was a bit skeptical to sample the beer because I knew some of the

brewery’s biggest fans were India Pale Ale fanatics. To some of us, that’s a style that tastes similar to how a Sharpie marker smells. I have been told many times an IPA is an acquired taste, and it’s one that thus far has eluded me. I told one of the tap room employees as much, and he quickly poured me a glass of their “Southern Session” beer. For a light beer drinker like myself, this will make you never want to go back to Corona or Blue Moon. I also tried another of Jekyll’s year-round offerings, “Big Creek Kolsch,” and give it a thumbs-up. My advice is to keep an open mind when sampling Jekyll’s beer. The more you learn about the craft and January | February 2016

passion that goes into each batch, your enjoyment is sure to increase. I love that you have the option of ordering a “half pour” of a beer so you can sample several. Brewery tours are every 30 minutes and free with admission. I have been on a few tours, and each guide was funny, knowledgeable and passionate about beer. On the tour, one of the first things you learn about the brewery is the history of its unique name. The first brewery in the “Deep South” was founded on Jekyll Island in 1738 by Major William Horton. Incidentally, for dark beer drinkers, try the seasonal Major Horton’s Export Stout. The first brewery in Alpharetta, Jekyll recently celebrated its two-year anniversary. It has been named “Best New Brewery in the South” and I can’t help but think they will be trendsetters in this city for many years to come. Jekyll is a great place to hang out with friends, or a fun date night destination. Sydney Robinson is the C.E.O. of Renaissance Marketing Group. Sydney@RenaissanceMarketingGroup.com.

Personal trainer:

Stick to goals for workouts By Alecia Warneke

Happy New Year. It’s hard to believe we are nearly through January. Just a couple weeks ago we were setting goals for the year, perhaps making some resolutions. If you’re like me, you were filled with new resolve to attack the year. Maybe reach those elusive marks from last year, as well as some new aspirations for 2016. Of course, almost everyone sets goals related to their health. Whether it is the proverbial, “I want to lose weight, eat better, start working out,” or something more specific, like “I

16 m North Atlanta Magazine

want to drop two dress sizes by spring break,” this is about the time when our gritty resolve begins to wane. I mean, the Super Bowl parties are about to begin, for crying out loud. But I’m here to tell you, you can stick to your health and fitness goals and keep them fresh. First, if you haven’t already, I challenge you to revisit those goals and make them specific and measureable. “I want to lose weight” is not nearly as powerful as, “I want to lose 10 pounds in two months.” Once you’ve decided on a timeline, write down the actual date with the goal. For example, “I want to lose 10 pounds by March 1.” Of course, your goals need to be reasonable as well. Typically, a healthy weight loss pattern will be 1-2 pounds per week, unless you are on a specified meal plan, such as our 28-Day Challenge, or under a medically supervised program.

‘I’m here to tell you, you can stick to your health and fitness goals and keep them fresh.’ Alecia Warneke Personal trainer

January | February 2016

Second, take an inventory of how you’ve done so far, and make the necessary changes. Did you bite off more than you can chew? Working out every day for two hours may have sounded great over the holidays. But that may not be realistic once the kids are back in school, you’re back to work, and activities are in full gear. You can benefit from 15-20 minutes a day of exercise if it is interval-training based. If six days a week is still too much (you should always have a rest day so your body can recover), commit to three days a week. Lastly, seek accountability. You may know exactly what to do, but if you’re not doing it, that knowledge is useless. It’s not the knowing, it’s the doing. This could be a friend, workout buddy, or a professional trainer. It should be someone who is not afraid to tell you when you’re failing, and can help you get back on track to be the most effective you can be with your efforts. TRUGrit Fitness offers a variety of services, including personal in-home training, group training, healthy cooking classes, and our 28-Day Challenge. The challenge is a comprehensive food plan, including a menu with five meals a day, easy-to-follow recipes, weekly grocery lists, daily educational emails for accountability, three 15-20 minute workout videos each week, and access to our team for help. Everything is done for you. All you need to do is follow the plan, with 100 percent results guaranteed.

Growing together and depending on each other.

why only make a resolution to better yourself at the beginning of the year? Why not live better all the time? “While January is a time to focus on healthy living and eating, our belief is that you s h o u l d l ive w e l l a l l y e a r l o n g . A year-round lifestyle Earth Fare can be a one-stop shop for healthy living, and their website reflects that mindset. Blogger shares ideas for a day out with family By Adlen W. Robinson

If you have children or grandchildren, chances are you’re always looking for fun things to do. But how many times have you fought Atlanta traffic only to get to a venue and be disappointed by the attraction or its cost, or both? Enter award-winning Atlanta blogger Sue Rodman, and her awesome Field Trips with Sue. This blog extraordinaire is the perfect answer for busy parents who want to enjoy all Atlanta has to offer, without the headache of research and guesswork. Rodman, who works in public relations, started a blog for her own business to take advantage of the social media craze. “I wrote one post for a marketing blog, but I thought what I really wanted to do was to hang out more with my three then-young sons,” Rodman remembered. “I’ve always loved going places with them, so it just felt natural to write about our adventurous ‘field trips.’” Rodman said her goal was simple — to give other parents ideas about where to take kids for fun outings. Besides suggesting where to go, Rodman offers invaluable information about costs, what to expect, what ages

will enjoy it the most, etc. And the advice is not limited to the metro Atlanta area. Rodman also explores nearby accessible places. For example, Field Trips with Sue offers a Southerner’s Ski Guide that gives information for first-time skiers as well as reviews of several ski resorts in the South and out West. Rodman is masterful at giving advice to parents for how to beat the lines at Six Flags or to get the most from a Legoland experience. “Atlanta has some really exciting things going on right now,” Rodman said. “The Children’s Museum of January | February 2016

Atlanta recently opened a completely refurbished museum. There are old favorites like the ball mover, but also some enhancements like an expanded grocery and the addition of a kid-sized diner.” Rodman also said the Center for Puppetry Arts has a new museum that features an entire wing of Jim Henson puppets, including Sesame Street favorites like Big Bird and Elmo, as well as Muppet stars Kermit and Miss Piggy. Even though it’s winter, Rodman boasts a terrific Summer Camp Guide. There are articles about how to choose a camp and save money while doing so. Clearly, Field Trips with Sue is an awesome blog and resource for parents and grandparents. In fact, it won Nickelodeon Parent’s Pick award in 2009 and continues to be as popular as it is practical. It’s cold outside.

What to do? By Kayla Robins

D

ecember may have been the warmest start to winter in recent memory, but that can’t last forever. With cold and rainy days ahead, it may be easy to recede into the warmth of your home or couch for entire weekends at a time. But what fun would that be when there is so much to do indoors and away from the elements? As you’re waiting for spring to bloom, visit some of these winter-friendly activities on a day trip that won’t require a raincoat and boots.

Georgia Aquarium A trip to downtown Atlanta can give the whole family a day of fun in the arctic without getting on a plane. The Georgia Aquarium, rated one of the best in the nation, offers a map of water-based landscapes and the animals that live across the world. This is definitely a family-friendly activity, though the center concourse has been known to get decorated for Valentine’s Day. If you have time while you’re down there, Centennial Olympic Park offers a number of sights and museums, including the World of Coca-Cola, the Center for Civil and Human Rights and SkyView Atlanta. And it’s not just bowling. You can eat, have birthday parties for kids and adults, group events for churches, holiday parties, schools and day cares.

Food Trends for 2016 A new year has arrived and that means chefs, food writers and foodies everywhere are out with their predictions of what will be trending in 2016. Here are just some of the predictions.

By Adlen W. Robinson

Smoked salts

At first this may sound like a strange concept, but in reality smoked salts are a boon for the home cook. You can make your own roasted, smoky salted nuts, give steamed vegetables a new smoky “kick,” or make the best smoky French fries ever. Currently I have only seen smoked salts at big, specialty grocery stores. Still, look for this trend to trickle down to “regular” grocery stores.

Artisanal butchery

Expect more restaurants to tout smoking, curing wand cutting their own meats in house. Many will also use local farmers, often practicing sustainable farming. Charcuterie is a term referring to the branch of cooking devoted to preparing meat products, such as sausages, terrines, etc. While it used to be reserved for only the “best” restaurants, now there are many

26 m North Atlanta Magazine

eateries specializing in charcuterie and with even more featuring a daily offering on their menus.

House-made artisanal pickles, jams and jellies

Again, more and more food products in restaurants will be made in house, often using local ingredients. This is a good thing for flavor, of course, but also because over-thecounter pickles often include chemicals and other unsavory additives.

Street food and street trucks

When it comes to street food, think Mexican corn on the cobb, slathered in mayonnaise, Cotija cheese and lime zest. More and more restaurants are highlighting the street foods from various cultures and offering it to the diner in the comforts of an indoor table. Street trucks continue to thrive, offering diners interesting foods at economical prices.

Middle Eastern and African flavors

Also, ethnic condiments and spices are showing up, even on regular grocery store shelves. I recently found an excellent Harissa at the grocery store which is delicious atop roasted potatoes.

Ancient grains

Grains such as kamut, bulgur, farro, buckwheat, amaranth and sorghum continue to appear on menus, but expect to see them on your “regular” grocery store shelves. For an alternative to ho-hum rice or pasta, try experimenting with one of these grains from yesteryear.

Farm to table food

Sort of buzz words with more restaurants growing their own gardens, or at least purchasing produce and protein sources from local farms. I am a fan and supporter of this movement and hope it continues. January | February 2016

ho would have thought that one of the best places in all of Atlanta to eat sushi can be found off of Ga. 400’s Exit 17 in north Forsyth? It’s true. If you love sushi and all things Asian, you’re in for a real treat. Rice is no newcomer to Cumming either. In fact, this gem located in the Publix strip mall, has been there for more than 10 years. Daily deliveries of fresh, quality ingredients ensure everything is delicious. We like to sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs work their magic.

his delicious, family-owned Italian restaurant is typically bustling with regular customers who come back frequently for a taste of Italy. Owner Antonio Fundora is also the head chef and his wife, Maria, is the general manager. If you eat there, no doubt she will stop by to ensure your meal is enjoyable. Portions are generous and everything tastes as if it is lovingly prepared. Before you go, read the sweet story on their web site of Maria and Antonio’s background and experience in the restaurant world. They immigrated to the United States from Cuba in the 1960s. Mangia!

his upscale restaurant on Canton Street in the heart of Roswell is full of Southern charm and beautifully cooked, regional food with a decidedly gourmet feel and taste. The restaurant likes to tout that its food is “simple, seasonal, Southern.” And after one bite, you’re sure to agree. The presentation is beautiful and the atmosphere (both outside and inside) is fantastic. The No. 1 seller and most requested menu item? Perhaps not surprisingly, fried chicken. Try this spot, y’all.

Go red in February

For women’s heart disease, stroke prevention By Kayla Robins

February is for love and all things red. The American Heart Association loves the color red, and shows it by holding a massive national public awareness day on Feb. 5, a Friday, to bring attention to the leading killers of women — heart disease and stroke. The 13th Annual National Wear Red Day urges all women, from businesses, schools, the media, buildings and landmarks to “go red” and “glow red” and show commitment to reducing risk, improving health and saving women’s lives. One in three women dies of heart disease and stroke every year. Yet it’s 80 percent preventable, according to the American Heart Association.

30 m North Atlanta Magazine

Why red? Easy. Ask a stylist, job coach or dating expert. Red stands out. Eyes are drawn to it. Not to mention it’s the color of our hearts and the symbol for love. You don’t just have to wear red. Paint something in the community red. Share pictures of your red day and use the hashtag #GoRedSelfie through Feb. 28. Who wouldn’t love to see a dog dressed in red? You can also start your own National Wear Red Day Fundraiser to show your support for friends, family and women in your community. For more information, visit goredforwomen.org.
