Whitewater rafting on the river, which was the setting of the movie “Deliverance” in late 1970s, offers two distinct and memorable levels: Section III, which is mild and scenic; and Section IV, which is also scenic, but wild. Other sections of the river have been designated as “recreational.” The Chattooga bisects the Ellicott Rock Wilderness, which straddles Georgia, North and South Carolina, and the Chattahoochee, Nantahala and Sumter National Forests. New Echota Historic Site

One of the most significant Cherokee Indian sites in the nation, New Echota was where the tragic “Trail of Tears” officially began. Today, visitors can see 12 original and reconstructed buildings, including the council house, courthouse, print shop, missionary Samuel Worcester’s home, and an 1805 store, as well as outbuildings such as smoke houses, corn cribs and barns. In the visitor center, guests can purchase souvenirs, books, music and view interpretive exhibits and a 17-minute film. New Echota Historic Site is located 1211 Chatsworth Hwy., N.E., Calhoun.
