SWIM TEAM NEWS

Come join us in the swim team fun this summer - registration for the 2025 season opens on March 1st!

The Waves swim team is a recreational team open to all children 5 years or older who can swim 25 yards unassisted. We focus on building stroke technique, team camaraderie and enjoyment for the sport. Swimmers will learn how to do all 4 strokes - freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly (freestyle and backstroke only for 6 & under age group). Swimmers will also enjoy fun activities such as treat days, “Fun Friday’s”, themed meets and swimmer of the week awards. Waves practices begin in May and continue through the end of June. Swim meets are usually held every Thursday in June (5:30pm start time) at local Forsyth neighborhoods with 2-3 meets taking place at home in Windermere.

Not quite ready for swim team? We also have a Ripples program for younger swimmers (4-6 years old) with whom our coaches work closely learning water safety, floating, kicking and basic stroke work. Ripples is a 4-5 week program that begins on May 27th after school is out.

Please see our website for registration links: https://windermerewaves.swimtopia.com/. Registration fees, tentative practice and meet schedules, volunteer requirements and general team information are available on our website. Registration fees include a team t-shirt (must register by April 30th), league fees, team celebrations/treats and end of season banquet.

**For the Ripples feeder program ONLY, there are a limited number of spots available and registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis so please register at your earliest opportunity if interested. Registration is open to Windermere residents first through March 15th.**

There will be a swimsuit fitting in late March or early April at the Windermere Lodge - check our website for further updates. 2025 parent information with all major topics for the season will also soon be available for review on our website. We look forward to a fun and exciting 2025 season! GO WAVES!

Golf Cart Laws and Safety on Roadways

The Board of Directors is asking for your cooperation and assistance. We as a Board are very concerned about the rise of unlicensed youths operating golf carts.

In the event you don’t know the Georgia laws in this area, please see the information below that was prepared by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. The bottom line is that no person should be at the wheel of a golf cart unless they have a valid drivers’ license.

In the coming weeks, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will be stepping up enforcement of the Georgia Code. If the situation doesn’t resolve itself, the Sheriff’s Office has informed us that parents may be ticketed for allowing their children to illegally operate these vehicles.

As always, please call 911 or the non-emergency number at 770-781-3087 to report suspicious persons as well as unsafe or illegal operation of a motor vehicle.

A golf cart, legally defined as a motorized cart, may operate on roadways when all of the following elements of law are met:

1) Operate during daylight hours only (O.C.G.A. 40-6-330). May, however, operate at night if they meet the equipment requirements of 49 Code of Federal Registry 571.500: headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals;

2) Operate only on a roadway with a posted maximum speed limit of 35 MPH or less (O.C.G.A. 40-6-362);

3) Must be equipped with an amber strobe light that is visible for 500 feet to the rear and front (O.C.G.A. 40-6-362)

4) The operator possesses a valid driver’s license (O.C.G.A. 40-5-20 and Coker v. State, Georgia Court of Appeals. June 13, 2003);

5) Slow Moving Emblem (16 inch red/orange retro-reflective triangle) is visibly attached to the rear (O.C.G.A. 40-8-4 (a)).

Other Restrictions:

6) Impeding the normal flow of traffic is prohibited: a golf cart or other may not drive “at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic” (O.C.G.A. 40-6-184), e.g., operating in a 35 mph zone that prevents a following vehicle from driving the posted speed limit.

7) Occupants: Children under the age of 6 prohibited from riding as a passenger, for “a child passenger restraining system” shall be provided in all passenger vehicles (O.C.G.A. 48-8-76). Occupants must only ride in a proper seat position.

Legal exemptions: Registration (tag) is not required (40-2-20 exempts motorized carts), and Insurance is not required (34-33-2 only registered vehicles require Insurance).

Coyote alert

There have recently been some coyote sightings in our area so I did some research on this wild canine and learned these facts below.

Height: - 1.9 - 2.2 feet (adult, at shoulder)

Weight - 15 - 46 lbs (adult)

• Known as American Jackal”

• Native to North America

• Versatile - able to adapt to and expand into environments modified by humans. Urban coyotes are common in many cities.

• Pointed ears, narrow muzzles & bushy tails

• Coloring is usually a mix of gray, tan and black but can range from black to strawberry blonde.

• Primarily carnivorous. Diets consist of deer, rabbits, hares, rodents, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. However, they may also eat fruits and vegetables on occasion.

• Characteristic vocalization is a howl and has been described as the most vocal of all “wild” North American mammals.

• Coyote attacks on humans are uncommon and rarely cause serious injuries.

• They are often attracted to dog food and animals that are small enough to appear as prey. Items such as garbage, pet food and sometimes feeding stations for birds & squirrels attract coyotes into backyards.

• Coyotes probably carry the largest number of diseases and parasites due to their wide range and varied diet.

• If you encounter a coyote, LEAVE IT ALONE. If it approaches, make yourself appear as large as possible by making loud noises to scare it away. If you have a dog, keep it on a leash and behind you or pick it up.

• Coyotes normally appear more between dusk and dawn, but can be ctive 24 hours a day. They can be seen more during the daytime hours in the Spring and Summer, as they are giving birth and raising their young.

DO NOT CALL 911 if you spot a coyote. Contact your local animal control or wildlife agency. And thank you for posting a sighting on our WINDERMERE RESIDENTS FACEBOOK PAGE to make us all aware!
