CYSS offers various programs to support children and families with child care, recreation, socialization and child development for children of all ages. The Child Development Centers (CDCs) offer full day and hourly child care programs for ages 6 weeks–5 years old. School Age Center (SAC) offers a variety of care, including part day preschool and full day, hourly, and before and after school care for school age children. The Family Child Care (FCC) program offers full day, hourly, before and after school and extended hours care for ages 6 weeks–12 years old. The Youth Center (YC) offers an afterschool middle school program, open recreation, health, fitness and social opportunities for 6th grade and up.
Child Development Centers (CDC’s) Army CYSS Programs have been described as “a model for the nation,” and they do the best to deserve that accolade! All of the centers are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The rates are competitive with other programs of comparable quality. Hourly care is also available at South Post CDC Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–4:30 pm. Reservations may be made up to four weeks in advance. If you want to know about the daily lesson plans, schedules and routines, child growth and development issues, or what constitutes a quality day care experience for children, just ask! Strong Beginnings Pre-K This program targets school readiness by focusing on social, emotional, academic and physical development children preparing to enter kindergarten. Students’ progress is reported to parents to ensure that they’re reaching expected school readiness goals. During a typical morning, students focus on Mathematics, Language/Literacy, Science/Technology or Social Studies; they engage in fun interactive learning stations for Creative Expression, Art, Woodworking, Cooking, Water/Sand and Music/Movement. Markham School Age Center (SAC) SAC complements the school day with a state-of-the-art computer lab and homework center to ensure support with school assignments. During the school year, SAC offers part day preschool and prekindergarten programs for children 3–5 years old. The curriculum emphasizes physical well-being, language usage, attentiveness, imagination, world knowledge, social and emotional development.

ACS classes and training are designed to equip Soldiers and Families with the skills, knowledge and support needed to face the challenges of military life.

Referral procedures are used when it is not possible to provide immediate direct assistance. Follow-up procedures are provided to ensure that needs are met.
The SOS mission is to educate the community about their program and advocate on behalf of all Families who have suffered the loss of a Soldier. SOS strives to build a unified support program which embraces and reassures Survivors that they are continually linked to the Army Family for as long as they desire through resouces.

The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) is input from the people of the Army to Army leadership. It’s a unique Army process that allows Soldiers and families say what’s working, what isn’t and what could work. Many AFAP improvements impact quality of life for all services. Thinking About Becoming an AFAP Delegate? If you are a Soldier, retiree, civilian, family member–active, guard or reserve–you can be a delegate! Delegates represent the Army Family, review and prioritize all submitted issues, select three most important issues and recommend solutions. AFTB is an official Army training program that emerged as a result of lessons learned after the Gulf War. It helps develop, ready Family and soldiers and contributes to unit and mission readiness.

Why is AFTB Important? AFTB is a “Combat Multiplier:” AFTB develops the knowledge and skills in Family members, empowering them to thrive in their Army communities. AFTB is a Family Readiness Group (FRG) Enhancer: AFTB improves communications with the chain of command, FRG’s Rear Detachment and the Family’s ability to access the unit and community resources. Soldiers can earn promotion points by completing AFTB Level 1 as well as three other Army Community Service (ACS) training programs. AFTB provides unit training and individual classes or concept blocks upon request. Grow Personal Skills As a member of the Army Family, you can: • Continue to develop your personal skills • Manage stress from deployment • Manage your personal time • Improve communication with your spouse and children to handle conflict in a more positive manner
Lead Others Serving as a leader or a mentor to others is an art that AFTB can help you master. AFTB helps you become a self-confident leader who possesses the trait that others admire and will provide you with an opportunity to give back to your community as a leader, a volunteer, a coach and a mentor. EFMP provides support to military families with special needs. The program offers Systems Navigation Services and activities for families enrolled in the program. Respite Care EFMP offers up to 40 hours of care for each registered exceptional family member. This provides temporary rest for family members responsible for the regular care of family members with disabilities. The objectives of FAP are to prevent spouse and child abuse, to encourage the reporting of all instances of such abuse, to ensure the prompt assessment and investigation of all abuse cases, to protect victims of abuse, and to treat all Family members affected by or involved in abuse. It houses the MWR Frame Shop, Wood Shop and Auto Shop. The Frame Shop offers custom framing—you can do your own framing, take a class or have it done for you! Plaques, flag boxes, shadow boxes, shadow frames and engraving services are also available. The Multi-Craft Area offers stained glass classes and jewelry classes. The Wood Shop offers a woodworking safety class and the capabilities of pen and bowl turning on a lathe, furniture, toy, ornament, deskplate construction and more. The Automotive Shop offers bays for doing your work, a safety class and basic automotive maintenance classes. CONSTRUCTION UPDATE The Kawamura Arts & Crafts Center closes in March to transition into the new facility, which is scheduled to open mid May 2012. Park Rental Available / Reservation Information We have four parks available to rent April–October for parties, family gatherings or organizational days. The parks are Castle Park, Tompkins Basin, Freemont Field and Soldier Statesman Park. User fee is $100 per day ($125 for Castle Park) in addition to a $100 refundable cleaning deposit. Tompkins Basin Pavilions are free to use however a $25 cleaning deposit is required. Van Noy Library is currently undergoing multiple renovation projects. In order to provide service to customers, a small temporary library, Library Lite, has been set up at Outdoor Recreation. CONSTRUCTION UPDATE • The Van Noy Library closed on January 29 for facility renovation projects to begin. Renovation plans include ADA accessibility, restroom remodeling, new carpeting and new paint. • A small temporary library has opened at Outdoor Recreation (Bldg. 778, Tompkins Basin). 2nd Annual Survivor Services Day June 2 / 8 am–2 pm Survivor Services Day is a day to honor and recognize Survivors of our Fallen Soldiers. This is a day to commemorate the ultimate sacrifices of our Soldiers and fulfilling the Army Family Covenant. As stated by our Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Army, “Never before in the history of our Army have we asked so much of our Families. They are serving side-by-side with our Soldiers, enduring their hardships and providing the unconditional love and support that truly make our Army strong. The Army Family Covenant pledges our commitment to support Soldiers and their Families and resource programs to provide them a quality of life commensurate with their service.”
