HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY
“I thought I would never be without pain again.”
by Amy Sharp
Z
ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk. We continue to be completely satisfied with Dad’s results.” This past September, Zahra found herself in need of chiropractic care. “I was t-boned in the driver’s side by a car running a red light. My lawyer referred me to a chiropractor immediately. Things were moving fast, and I went to the chiropractor recommended by the lawyer. But after 19 treatments, I wasn’t getting any better. I had multiple back spasms throughout the day, I couldn’t drive, and I was exhausted. I thought I would never be without pain again. The chiropractor recommended pain medication. But I don’t believe in meds until all other options are exhausted. Dad had great chiropractic results, and yet after 19 treatments I had seen no difference.” “Finally I scheduled a consult with Dr. Harris. He reviewed my MRIs and did x-rays. He was shocked by the damage from the car accident—four herniated discs in my neck and two in my back. He put together an aggressive plan of action and I stuck to it. After a week I noticed a drastic difference...I could lift more, had more energy, I was sleeping better, and I didn’t need the pain meds. I’m now in the last week of my treatment and I am perfect—better than I was before actually. I can lift heavier weights than I ever have in my life. I’m just amazed by the difference!” Dr. Harris says, “Pain and numbing is the body’s way of saying ‘something is not right.’ Surgery was not an option for Zahra’s Dad, and Zahra is far too young to be dependent on pain medication to feel normal. Her spine was injured in the accident and needed to be treated. Both Zahra and her Dad chose a safe and natural way to relieve and treat their symptoms. Call today and let me design a treatment plan just for you!”

As you know, Easter is approaching! Many Christians hold onto the true significance of the holiday – a celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Unfortunately, over the years, Easter has taken on a worldy nature. Easter egg hunts have replaced Sunday Services and Easter bunnies are displayed at large, rather than the death of Christ on the Cross. While I have no inherent problem with these secular traditions, it bothers me that the focus of Easter has shifted from its true meaning. Without the death of Christ on the cross, there would be salvation for sinners. Jesus paid the price for sin, and without his sacrifice, we would be lost. It is so essential to hold onto the spirituality of this beautiful holiday. “15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” – John 3:15-17 (KJV) This issue also features our Christian Voters’ Guide. Katy Christian Magazine and Fort Bend Christian Magazine have been privileged to meet and interact with most of these candidates, and collected questionnaires that adequately portray their values. Hopefully these will prove useful to you when voting! Many of these races are very tough to call and most of the people running are genuinely good people. I have developed a close relationship with some of the candidates, and I fully believe they are the most well suited and morally conscious people for the job. I would include Daryl Segura, Troy Nehls, Frank Yeverino, Vincent Morales, Clyde Leuchtag, and Wayne Thompson in this category. Likewise, some people have been in office for far too long, and change is desperately needed. They campaign to us and promise one thing, and once in Washington, it’s business as usual. It’s necessary to elect candidates who intend on fulfilling their promises. I believe James Lloyd to be one of these people- he would make an excellent member of Congress. He has my vote. Whomever you decide to vote for, I think issues that should be of the utmost important to Christians are pro- God, pro-life, and pro- family platforms. I believe that the people we have endorsed are the best and most qualified candidates’ we have. Joseph R. Menslage President/Publisher Fort Bend Christian Magazine joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com

Executive Director of Faith-Based Recreation Center Hopes to Guide Young Athletes in Sports, Their Faith By Jessa McClure A whistle blows signaling the end of the first half of a youth basketball game at the Perry Abernathy Recreation Center (PARC) in Sugar Land, TX, which is part of the recreation ministry of Sugar Land First United Methodist Church. Ten, tired and sweaty third-graders take a break from their intense game of youth basketball and slump onto the bench, guzzling water and Gatorade. While they take a breather from their active game play, Steven Kelly, the Executive Director of the center, sits down between these young athletes and opens a book of devotionals. He reads a Bible verse and asks the children to bow their heads in prayer. For Kelly, this moment is the uniting of his two greatest passions—youth sports and ministry. He first realized his passion when he began working at a local YMCA after graduating from Clear Book High School in Friendswood, TX.

Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

“I became a camp counselor, an afterschool care giver, and a sports official,” Kelly said. “Basically, I did anything they offered, and because I loved it so much I thought I might go down the teaching track.” But, after beginning his studies at the University of Houston, he decided he’d rather go into sports administration. “I graduated with a sports management degree and continued my work with the YMCA, where I worked my way up the chain,” he said. “I did everything from youth sports director to senior program director. I was there for seven years and loved every minute of it.” Kelly left the place where he found his passion to live out a childhood dream of working for the Houston Astros. During his time there, he worked as the Minute Maid Park Tours manager, in which his biggest role was creating and implementing educational field trips for children who came to visit the park. “I worked there for four-and-a-half-years, and I really enjoyed it,” he said. “But, in 2010, my wife and I had our first child, and working late baseball games and weekends is a little tough when you have a family,” he said. So, Kelly decided to take a break from the world of sports to be with his family and to figure out what God had planned for the next
chapter of his career. As he sought his next step, Kelly reflected on his faith and his time as a member of the United Methodist Church. He first accepted Christ when he was a child, growing up in the Pasadena Methodist Church. “My faith isn’t as strong as it should be, but we’re always working on our faith, drawing closer to God,” he said. After months of praying, Kelly discovered a job opening as the

executive director for The PARC, which is a faith-based recreation center that gives children the chance to experience competitive sports in a Christ-like environment. The center also includes child care services, day camps and fitness classes for adults.
“I was hired to be the executive director for the entire operation,” he said. “I make sure the day-to-day operations run smoothly, I oversee staff management, finances, payroll, I train and evaluate
volunteers, and work with donors and the Board of Directors.” Even though he loves running the center, his real passion is guiding young athletes not only in their athletic careers, but in their faith. And he makes sure that families who participate in the center’s activities know that faith and good conduct come first. “When a parent signs their child up for one of our activities, we say, we’re going to act in a Christ-like way,” the executive director said. “It’s important for us to set that faith-based aspect right from the get-go. Yes, we’re here to practice volleyball, but we’re also going to take ten minutes out to read a Bible verse.” Kelly said he feels it is important to instill these character traits in young athletes because of the climate in youth sports today. “I’ve seen a big shift in youth sports becoming a lot more competitive,” he said. “I’ve seen parents treat a third grade basketball game like the NBA finals. That’s not why we’re here. We’re here for the kids to learn a sport, have fun, and learn a little about their faith.” Because The PARC offers such a unique experience for young athletes, Kelly hopes that the community will recognize it as the best recreation center in the area. “In the three-and-a-half years since I’ve been here, we’ve almost doubled our participation,” he said. “We hope to offer new recreational activities as we grow like soccer, sand volleyball for adults and other activities to serve our community.” Because of the center’s exponential growth, Kelly was able to

hire a full-time recreation director, Jonathan Leung, who has helped him to develop even more sports and fitness opportunities for families in the community. Kelly hopes to not only give those in Sugar Land a great center, but those in the diverse communities that surround the center’s home base. “We serve Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg and Houston,” he said. “And we hope to offer things that are tailored to those who live in those areas as well.” One of the ways Kelly hopes to reach out to these communities is through senior adult activities like field trips and board and card game opportunities, cooking classes, English as a Second Language courses, and homework help for area children. The PARC also offers afterschool child care for children in Kindergarten through sixth grade, as well as the Camp Yahweh Day Camp for Kids that runs June 6 through August 19, and faith-based classes that focus on cooking, swimming, bowling and many other areas of interest. In everything they do, God is first, Kelly said. Even their yoga classes are scripturally-based. “Yes, we’re focusing on fitness, but we’re going to do it in a faith-

Irrevocable Living Trusts as a Solution for Long-term Care Costs By Margaret McCullough Connolly, Attorney and Counselor at Law If you, or a family member, does not qualify for long term care insurance, but discover the need for long term or nursing home care for the individual, how can you protect your family’s assets from being depleted by paying for long term care? If you want to shield your estate from the costs of a nursing home or other potential creditor, you may form and fund an irrevocable trust with those assets or property. This involves naming someone else to act as trustee of the property. Ownership of the property is transferred to the Trust, and the Trustee is obligated to protect and preserve the assets, per instructions contained in the Trust, and to pay out income from the Trust to Beneficiaries you designate in the Trust. Because you no longer own the assets, they cannot be used to pay costs of nursing home care, and cannot be attached by creditors to satisfy your debts. The catch is, for this type of protection, the trust must be irrevocable - you can’t change your mind and take your property back after you move it into the trust’s ownership. Your ownership of your
property is severed so a nursing home can’t expect you to use these assets to pay for your care – they’re not yours any longer. Moving your property into such a trust allows you to qualify for Medicaid. When you make the transfer of property, you effectively

deplete your estate of disposable assets. This doesn’t have to leave you bereft – the trust can provide you with income produced from the assets it holds. (*Also subject to Medicaid Limits.) But – trust income can be paid as reimbursement of family members, for payments made by them for your care. The other catch is that Medicaid has a five-year “look back” period that can put you in a bit of a bind if you’ve moved your countable assets into an irrevocable trust and can’t get them back.
You cannot qualify for Medicaid for five (5) years after you transfer your property into the trust. If you transfer assets, then need long-term care four years and 11 months later, you’re within this look-back period – and you may not be looking at just a month of ineligibility until you reach five years. How long you’re ineligible depends on the value of the property you placed in trust and the average monthly cost of nursing home care in your state. If the average monthly cost is $5,000, the government divides the value of your transferred property by this number. If you moved $100,000 in assets, this comes out to 20, so you’d be ineligible for Medicaid for 20 months -- almost two years. Meanwhile, you can’t get your property back to pay for your care during this time. Bottom line - It’s a good idea to consult with a lawyer to explore all your options before you take such a permanent step. This article does not constitute legal advice. It is to be used for descriptive purposes only. Please seek the advice of a competent lawyer in your state.

Pharmacist Brings Hope to Patients with New Medical Technology By Jessa McClure Artist Lisa Tenney dabs at a bright blue glob of paint, filling her paintbrush with color. Her hand then moves to the canvas where she brings her vision to life. Three years ago, Tenney’s canvas was empty and her paintbrushes dry. She had been diagnosed with a form of lymphoma that left her with little energy to carry out daily tasks, let alone the stamina to paint. “I had been on a painting sabbatical for a year because I didn’t have the strength to carry out the rest of life’s demands and still paint,” she said. “I felt like life as I had known it was over.” But a week after being diagnosed, she got a call from a high school friend, Dr. Ferryl Boyance D. Ph, R. Ph, who was working on a new form of alternative medical evaluation and remedy. “She offered to introduce me to what she was doing and I was open to trying it,” Tenney said. “I didn’t have any grand hopes for a miracle cure.” The method includes what Boyance calls a bioenergetic evaluation that uses the patient’s acupressure points to provide data about
what is happening inside the patient’s body that cannot be seen by simple explanation of symptoms. “The machine measures the electricity flowing through the body,” she said. “And once we can see which organs aren’t functioning correctly, we can try to remedy those issues.” After the scan is complete, patients will receive a report that shows what parts of their body are suffering. But, not only does the evaluation show the problem, it also provides a solution.

“It’ll show what you’re missing and identify the herbal corrective or pharmaceutical path that will help to alleviate these issues,” Boyance said. Once the problem has been identified, Dr. Boyance, then uses the machine to encode radio waves into a water-based solution that can help replenish nutrients and treat the patient’s medical issues. “The water acts like a CD or floppy drive,” she said. “Signals are emitted into the water and then you take 10 drops, three times a day. Every time you take those drops it downloads the information into your body.” Boyance knows that this new method sounds far-fetched, but she believes that bioenergetic evaluations are the future of medicine. “It’s not like drugs where you have to let it dissolve in your stomach and then it has to be absorbed into the blood stream and get to the organ before it can help. It’s immediate,” she said. “That’s what got me into it. It works faster than any other pharmaceutical, herbal or homeopathic treatment.” Although she offers evaluation and remedy services from her home right now, her hope is to one day use this technology in a pharmacy setting where pharmacists can use scans as a form of preventative medicine. “When the doctor sees you, they can only see what you tell them,” Boyance said. “If you forget to say that your knee hurts or that sometimes your side hurts, the doctor won’t get that information. But the machine forgets nothing, and can scan your whole body. If it shows your pancreas is weak, then we’re not
going to wait for you to become a diabetic to remedy that condition.” She hopes that having patients come in for scans even when they’re not feeling sick will help give doctors and other medical professionals something to compare to when the patient is sick. “Seventy or 80 percent of my patients come in because they don’t feel good or have pain,” she said. “I say, once we get you out of the pain, please come back every year so we can have a baseline.” Although Boyance believes wholeheartedly in this new form of detection and correction, she also knows that God is in control of each patient’s journey. “I am 100 percent positive that there is so much grace out there that there is nothing physically that God cannot overcome,” she said. She also believes that when a patient is feeling better physically, they have the strength to deal with other emotional or spiritual issues that might arise. “My hope is to be a blessing and make my patients’ bodies as strong as possible,” she said. The doctor and her alternative medical evaluation and solutions have already been a blessing to Tenney, who has returned to her painting passions. “I am finally able to do art again, and this spring I’m starting to teach classes in my home studio,” she said. “I would recommend Dr. Boyance’s treatments to anyone. Not only did they give me my life back, but working with [Boyance] was great. She is one of the most giving, selfless people I know.”

Why Local Races Matter By Gary Gillen I am occasionally surprised to meet an individual who consistently votes in Presidential elections but does not vote in Party Primaries or Local races. I think we all understand why it is important to educate ourselves and vote in the Presidential race but let’s talk about local races today. The local level of government has more effect on your daily life than any other. From the location of Stop Signs to speed limits on city streets to where your children go to school it is the local level of government: City Councils, School Boards and, yes, even Home Owner’s Associations that dictate so much of our lives. They determine the taxes you pay on your home and the dues you pay your homeowner’s association. Yet it is these races that are often decided by a very few people. There are many local and down ballot races and it is so easy to meet these candidates because they go to church with us, shop with us, eat with us. I suspect if you e-mail or telephone any of the local candidates they will gladly come to visit you because they want your vote. As Christians and citizens it is our obligation to let our voices be heard and most important we must educate ourselves, find candi-

dates with whose positions we agree and support them. This includes precinct level county races such as Constable, County Commissioner, and Justice of the Peace.
A word of warning… It isn’t reasonable to expect to find an elected official or candidate with whom we always agree. When you find a politician who agrees with you 100% of the time-be suspicious. Is he or she pandering to you or your community or truly on the same page as you? Voters who refuse to vote for a candidate they do not agree with on every single issue are often called “litmus test” voters.
These voters would rather see the opposition elected than vote for a candidate who is not “pure” enough for their taste. We saw this during the last presidential race when some people felt Mitt Romney, the Republican Candidate for President, was not conservative enough so they stayed home on Election Day and guaranteed President Obama’s re-election. As you can see, the decisions of voters have consequences. For example, I suspect that I was not the only person surprised by a recent article in a local publication that pointed out that Katy was on the list of Sanctuary Cities. Thinking it must have been a mistake I searched the internet and found Katy listed as a Sanctuary City in several publications. Regardless of whether you think that is good or bad, that is not the reason I mention it. I mention it because it is an example, admittedly extreme in this case, of the kinds of decisions local elected officials make and why it is important for voters to keep informed of the activities of local government officials. If you agree with that decision, to make Katy a Sanctuary City, you should let your elected officials know that and vote to keep them in office. If you disagree, you should let your voice be heard and get involved in replacing those who chose to make Katy a Sanctuary City. It’s up to you. Intense Men 2016 By Pastor GF Watkins Our men are lost. The pendulum has swung way to the left. Our nation and our world need men of character, integrity, single-mindedness, courage and maturity to stand up and begin to reverse the curse of apathy, weak-mindedness, complacency, and cowardice that has gripped this once proud and powerful nation. To reverse the curse, it will take many working together in biblical unity. The experience is available now. The tools are available now. The team is available now. The willing heart to offer the help is available now. Strong churches exist because the men in them are strong in their faith and their courage. When we use the term church, keep in mind the first churches were called the ecclesia or the set apart ones. They were set part because of their sacrificial hearts. These were people who understood the fact that if they joined this set apart group, they would be killed for a cause bigger than themselves. The first church was a group of ultimate warriors. The eternal prize is still the ultimate cause for a man to lay down his life. The following thoughts are my effort to expose why I feel it is time to plant truths in the local church that will strengthen the men
and thereby strengthen the church. The majority of churches worldwide are composed of a ratio of 80 percent female members and 20 percent male members. The Bible is written to men and initially intended to be taught to men in a congregational setting. The men, as heads of their homes, would then be responsible for taking this information back and leading their homes in the implementation of these truths. You can have spiritu-

ality (worship, praise, atmosphere, righteousness, etc.) with women, but it takes godly, courageous men to bring strength, action, warfare, discipline, direction, leadership, single-mindedness, and decisiveness to the Church. The above-mentioned percentages show us a matriarchal or mother led country, family, and church which depletes the attributes of a male or father figure. For example, a male is more prone to discipline with a physical force like a spanking or pushups, while a female is more prone to discipline with her words. A current example of this can be seen in two presidents. President George W. Bush was raised with a father in his home so when America was under attack on 9/11, he responded decisively and almost immediately with military force. President Obama was raised in a matriarchal environment therefore he tries diplomatic or verbal means to rectify threatening situations. When we enter most churches we see young urban heterosexual males with a liberal political view, who wear skinny jeans, grooms his eyebrows, colors his hair with streaks of yellow, does his nails, and is interested in the latest and greatest TV fads. Immature males are adapting to the culture of a feminine church and have little heart for sacrifice. Evangelizing the man is actually the pattern of the Bible. Jesus picked twelve men disciples to change the world. God came in the form of a man, Jesus, to illustrate roles of leadership and sacrifice from a man’s perspective. When a child is the first person saved in a family there is a 3 percent chance the rest of his family will be saved. When the mother is the first to be saved, the percentage increases to 13 percent. When the man/father is first to be saved, the percentage increases to 95
percent. The man is the ultimate influencer even though he is usually more difficult to win over. On March 17, 18, and 19 of 2016, we will hold our annual Intense Men Gathering. This event is a gathering of men to compete, camp and learn about biblical manhood. We rally around competitive sports like 7 on 7 football, 3 on 3 basketball, soccer, paintball, skeet shooting, etc and we teach on what it is to be a man, a son and a father. We want to invite all men out to Jordan Ranch in Schulenburg Texas to experience Intense Men 2016. This years theme is Stampede! There is a strength in numbers and we need men all over the world to come together and take back our families. Register at www.intensemen.com.

Surviving Spring Break: A Guide for Parents and Teens By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein What’s not to like about Spring Break? It’s a much needed respite from school; the beginning of a fresh, new season; and an opportunity to spend lots of time together as a family. And there’s the rub. Sometimes it doesn’t take long for lots of time to turn into too much time. Teens can be irritable, inflexible, moody, and unreasonable in their expectations. Seven full days of these emotions can stretch the patience of even the most saintly parents, so here are seven tips to get you through Spring Break with a smile on your face. Expect your kids to sleep in; keep the schedule flexible. Most teens sleep longer than we do, and this isn’t due to laziness. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens need 8.5 to 10 hours of sleep per night to function best, a little more than the adult recommendation of 7 to 9 hours. Just as we like to catch up on our sleep during vacation, teens do too, especially if they are highly academically motivated or involved in sports and activities that consume most of their days. You may be impatient waiting for them to start their day, but allowing them to wake at their leisure will make for better
attitudes and more appreciative teens who are more likely to go along with your plans.

Remember that it’s the little things that make memories. My son is 23 years old now, but he still talks about that one time in high school when we played miniature golf. Why? Because the winner got to choose any dessert he wanted as a prize, and his competitive nature brought him that win, and, as I recall, a tub of Snickers ice cream. Our family has taken major trips and spent a lot of money on activities, but this putt-putt adventure cost about 20 bucks, and it’s a day he remembers fondly. Sometimes the most priceless packages are wrapped in the smallest boxes. Proceed with caution when it comes to teen Spring Break trips. I understand that teens want to travel and “escape the real world” for just a bit, but if it’s financially feasible, I urge you to do this as a family, versus sending them off with other teens. High schoolers are still quite naïve to the ways of the world and even the best of them can find themselves in uncomfortable or unsafe situations when they are away from home without adult supervision. High school kids staying with college-age kids at a Spring Break destination can be a recipe for disaster, and I encourage you to avoid this. Let your kids enjoy balanced, unhurried days. Educators and child psychologists are seeing more stressed-out kids than ever before, so it’s important that kids have this chance to relax and do what they love to do. Give them a chance to sit around in their PJs and surf the net, but also try to plan a unique activity into each day that gives them something to look forward to. This can be anything from a movie to an evening at an arcade to visiting family across the miles. The key is to get them out of the house and moving, even if it’s only for a couple hours each day. Make your home a comfortable place to be, for both them and their friends. Encourage your kids to invite their friends to the house, and always let these friends know that you like them and they are welcome. My daughter and her friends spent hours in our

Find one go-to activity that your family enjoys doing together. Never underestimate the power of tradition. It creates comfort and familiarity and creates cohesiveness within a family. Kids may never say it, but every time you come together to resume a task, continue a game, or recreate a memory, you solidify the family bond. For some families, it’s working a 1,000-piece puzzle. For others, it’s playing pool, cards, or a board game. There’s nothing more beautiful than turning a fun family activity into a treasured tradition. During Spring Break, no matter where you are or what you’re doing, spend time resurrecting special moments. Take some time to remind your kids to finish the school year strong. This is a tough stretch for kids. They get a taste of summer freedom this week, but tired as they are of school, they must return for a few final months. Encourage your kids to use these break days to rejuvenate and refresh so they can do their best work during this end-of-year push. Kids should be prepping for final exams, AP exams, and for some, SAT and ACT, so a little parental encouragement is crucial at this time.

Ministry Uses ESL Classes to Bridge Gap, Build Relationships with Unreached People By Jessa McClure Houston is now the most diverse city in the country, according to a report by Rice University, and that means that people groups from all over the world are coming to this area for work, for new opportunities, and for hope. Global Frontier Missions’ Houston-based ministry hopes to not only give these immigrants and refugees a place to call home, but a chance to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. GFM was founded 15 years ago by Grant and Jennifer Haynes who lived and served among the more than 30 different people groups of Oaxaca, Mexico. The founders set out to bring the Word and make disciples throughout the 80 villages that surrounded their mountain home that had no Gospel witness. They led several men and women to Jesus, helped rise up a labor force, and built a Bible school. After so much success building God’s kingdom, the founders decided it was time to lead other unreached people groups to Christ. “Five years ago, the leadership decided to come to the US in
Atlanta and Houston to work with refugees and immigrants,” said Ryan D, director of the Houston branch of the ministry. The Houston GFM has the same vision as the ministry that begun in Mexico—making disciples of people who have never had a chance to hear about Jesus. “Houston is the perfect place to do this work because the city has had more refugees who have settled here since the 90s than any

other American city.” The Houston branch focuses on using English as a Second Language (ESL) classes as a bridge to reach the Muslim refugee population. “Through the English classes, we are able to build relationships with people who are typically unwilling or unable to have friendships with Christians,” Ryan said. “The classes are led by our full-time staff as well as numerous Christian volunteers from around Houston.” Part of the reason for the focus on teaching English is that it has become difficult for missionaries to enter certain countries. Being a certified and experienced English teacher is one profession that tends to get permission to work in these countries, the director said. “So, we believe that God wants us to raise up an army of English teachers to enter these closed countries—an army that is trained and focused on making disciples of Christ,” he said. Their hope is that through ESL classes, staff members and volunteers will be able to share the love of Christ with those who have never heard the Good News. Reaching the seemingly unreachable is part of GFM’s overall goal. “We want to be a part of seeing the remaining 40 percent of the world’s population that hasn’t heard of Jesus Christ to be reached with the Gospel,” Ryan said. “The Houston team wants to train 150 missionaries as English teachers working in the 10/40 window in the next 10 years.” The “10/40 window” is a term used by missionaries that refers to the eastern hemisphere, as well as the European and African part

of the western hemisphere. This area is located at 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator.
While this task may seem daunting, the organization is already moving toward this goal. They have started two different Missionary Training Programs—one that is a summer internship for college-aged people and one for professional missionaries who are called to serve overseas. “The summer internship for college students gives them a taste

of what a life in missions could look like,” Ryan said. “The interns live among the refugee population and teach English in our program. They also practice sharing their faith throughout the city.” The second training program includes living among the refugee population for 10 months teaching English. “At the end of the program the [trainees] receive a top-quality ESL teaching certification as well as college-level missions courses.” Through these programs, GFM is already moving in the lives of refugees and other people groups from unreached areas of the world. During registration for some of the ESL classes, a young woman walked up to the table and GFM employees and volunteers noticed that she seemed troubled. They were able to encourage her and talk to her about Jesus. “I gave her a Bible in her language, which she received with great joy,” missionary Michael Obringer said in a newsletter put out by one of the GFM’s ESL schools. “Since then, she has asked me to pray for her and her family on multiple occasions, and we have had several faith conversations.” The woman even said that God had been speaking to her through dreams and visions. “We are thankful that God is drawing people to himself and that we get to be a small part of His plans,” he said. Despite evidence of God’s hand working in the lives of these refugees, some still have mixed feelings about caring for refugees

in this country. But, Ryan said, giving hope and help to these men, women and children is not only important, but it’s part of how we as Christians should be showing Christ’s love. “The Old Testament and New Testament are filled with God’s commands for us to fight for and take care of the widowed, the orphaned, and the needy,” he said. “The parable of the Good Samaritan is a fantastic insight into what Christ was trying to tell us.” Ryan and the rest of the organization take these commandments seriously, and want to do all they can to not only provide a hand up to these refugees, but to also inspire other Christians to give of their time and finances to see the remaining people groups come to know Christ. “We know we aren’t the only organization doing this, but that’s good because the task is big, and it needs a lot of getting involved,” he said. “And reading Matthew 24:14 tells us that once there is a Gospel witness in every people group of the world, Christ can return. We figure that’s a pretty good goal.” If you’d like to get involved as a volunteer or missionary trainee, or would like to donate to the organization, go to globalfrontiermissions.org/houston-tx/.

God Bless the USA By Stephanie Leggett The United States of America was birthed in Prayer. The Continental Congress called for prayer and fasting in 1775 as they sought wisdom to create a brand new nation. The National Day of Prayer has been honored in Katy, Texas since it’s inception in 1952. Many people remember meeting in the city square of downtown Katy twenty years ago, and individual churches have faithfully honored the day holding prayer meetings through the years to lift our nation up in prayer. But in 2010 several pastors decided to do something unprecedented. They endeavored to join forces in prayer. The Merrell Center was booked for 2011 and 50 churches from many denominations and backgrounds came together to seek Gods favor for the United States of America. Since then it has continued to grow with 4000 people from all over the greater west Houston/Katy area join in worship and prayer for our great nation. It seems a movement of unity has captured the city. Churches are joining forces on many initiatives including the Perspectives class, The IF: Gatherings, Arise Women of Katy, pastors joining together as The Katy Church (thekatychurch.org) and more.
Parishioners are crossing long held boundaries and attending bible studies and worship events at places other than their home church as they recognize that together we make the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12). In recent years worship for the National Day of Prayer at the Merrell Center has been led by worship leaders from the area, and the prayer segments have always been led by a variety of pastors. But

things changed a bit in 2014 when Christian Radio Station KSBJ got involved. They began to bring national level artists like The Afters and All Sons and Daughters as well as production assistance. The award winning station recognized the unique nature of the event and wanted to support a unified prayer initiative. What has not changed is the heart of the event. Mike Hooper, Director of Prayer Initiatives at KSBJ says this; “Last year the worship and the united prayer led by the local area pastors was amazing! This year I am expecting a mighty outpouring
of his Spirit on our community as churches and pastors come together from all over the city to seek God for our Nation. God’s people praying is the hope of our Nation.” He is right. The theme of this years event comes from Malachi 3:7 “…Return to me and I will return to you.” 2014 was also the year that the date of Fire on the Altar was moved to align with the date of the National Day of Prayer. Now the event at the Merrell center kicks off 50 hours of non-stop worship and prayer that will continue at the Epi Center,(2655 South Mason Road). Churches take turns, one after the other, to lead worship and prayer that is continuous covering 3 days! Anyone is welcome to stop in to Fire on the Altar, day or night, and spend some quiet time in prayer. Some come for 10 minutes and others stay for hours with Bible and journal in hand. In Katy, Texas, The National Day of Prayer Ignites Fire on the Altar is one event, at two locations, spanning 3 days. The pastors of Katy want worship and prayer, not a concert and not teaching about prayer. They don’t want to TALK about prayer, they want to pray! Together. For our churches. Our families. And for the United States of America. Mark your calendar now for May 5-7, 2016 and together we will seek His face for the heart of this great nation. Many opportunities to volunteer at the Merrell Center and Fire on the Altar can be found at www.KatyPrays.org.

Fort Bend Commissioner Supports Capital Funds to Retrofit Veterinarian Room and Additional Veterinarian Personnel Rosenberg, Texas – Precinct One Commissioner, Richard Morrison, arranged a meeting with Fort Bend Pets Alive!, a Sugar Land-based non-profit 501(c)3 organization focused on transitioning Fort Bend County animal shelter to a “no-kill” operation, to provide a status report on the budgetary and operational issues discussed during the November 2, 2015, meeting between the two parties. Commissioner Morrison issued his support for Fiscal Year 2017 Capital Budget funding to retrofit the veterinarian room in the Fort Bend County animal shelter. Additionally, Morrison indicated his support to work with the City of Rosenberg to share an onsite veterinarian and veterinarian technicians. Successful implementation of these measures would guarantee vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, and medical care for all dogs and cats at both shelters. FBPA! welcomes the opportunity to work with Commissioner Morrison and the City of Rosenberg to implement these measures. Fort Bend County Animal Services is transitioning to Asilomar Accords record keeping. Asilomar Accords is the nationally accepted shelter data tracking software. However, the county does not include
feral cats in their euthanasia rates, classifying them as (wild) animals. Commissioner Morrison did indicate there are complications in the process. To be in compliance to the county’s goal to reduce euthanasia by 50% as stated in the annual operating budget in the last few years, FBPA! reiterated the importance of including deaths of feral/community cats in the euthanasia rate. FBPA! supports maximum transparency which enables all stakeholders to be on the same page. Claudine Vass, President of FBPA! said following the meeting, “We are excited to hear the support growing for these critical animal welfare issues.” She continued, “While we have a long way to go, if we are able to implement these measures then we have made significant improvements over the status quo.” About Fort Bend County Pets Alive!
FORT BEND PETS ALIVE! is a non-profit, 501(C)3 organization, dedicated to helping make Fort Bend a no kill community through programs such as adoptions, education and community outreach, low cost spay and neuter surgeries, fostering, Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS), and rescuing from euthanasia list.
