Not too long ago, I heard a story about a Pastor who served as a Chaplin in a Texas prison. One day, as Mother’s Day drew near, one of the prisoners approached the Chaplin and asked if he could get a Mother’s Day card for his mother. The Chaplin happily provided him with one. This news spread quickly amongst all the prisoners, and ultimately almost all of them asked the Chaplin for cards. He gladly helped them as well. He said to himself, “this has been an incredible ministry opportunity! I’ve been trying to reach these guys for some time without much success.” With Father’s Day in less than six weeks, he thought ahead and ordered cards for their dads. Much to his dismay Father’s Day came and went without a single prisoner requesting a card. That speaks volumes as to why some of them were imprisoned in the first place. It’s our responsibility to “train up a child in the way he/she should go.” Not the school, not the government, but us as parents; fathers. The role of a dad runs far deeper than blood- it takes more than simply having children to be a father. Be a part of their life. Be someone that they are proud to proclaim, “This is my dad!” Scripture teaches that who we are and how we live is like a “letter from God.” Our kids read that letter, each and every day. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” – Ephesians 6:4 Joseph R. Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

Former Fort Bend Christian Magazine Publisher Runs for President By Jessa McClure For years longtime Houston-area resident, and former Fort Bend Christian magazine publisher, Malisia Garcia, has been approached by representatives from the top political parties to run for office. She initially said no to these offers. She was busy raising three children, running a successful marketing consulting business and volunteering her time to help those less fortunate. But as she prayed about these opportunities, she felt like God was leading her right into the arena she thought she’d never enter—politics. “I’m not a politician,” Garcia said. “But, I felt like God was calling me to run for the office of the President of the United States so I could be a voice for the people. It is important that someone stands up for the people’s rights, liberty, and freedom.” Although the country seems to be heading towards a consensus on who they would like to represent their parties in the upcoming election, it is clear that many Americans are still unsure of who they think is best for the job. Garcia said this is why she thinks she has an advantage over

other candidates running for office. “I’m someone who truly has a heart for the people,” she said. “My work shows that. I’ve done a lot of things for the people that I didn’t get paid for. You haven’t seen me exploiting people I’ve helped to create a photo opportunity.” The single mother said she was confident in her decision to run not only because of God’s calling, but because she feels that the candidates portrayed in the media do not represent real Americans. Many of those who have been a part of the 2016 election cycle are from affluent backgrounds and have led privileged lives. Garcia knows what it means to struggle in today’s economy and get back on her feet. As a teen mother with three children to support, she found herself on government assistance. “I know why a lot of people become stuck on assistance,” she said. “They are unable to move past the help because they have to decide between feeding their children and making enough money to live without government assistance. If you make a certain amount of money the assistance is cut off completely. Then they have to say, I have a job, but now I can’t afford to feed my kids. A lot of people face that obstacle every day.” Garcia proposes a system that helps to wean recipients off of assistance. By creating an upward system to the program that begins that deducts the amount of government funds as the person begins making more money, it will encourage them to work more without the threat of being penalized financially. “You could say, okay, you made $20 more this month, so we’ll
take it off the next check,” she said. “That way it encourages them. They know they can make more money without losing food for their children.”
The mother of three, who fought her way off of assistance, said she doesn’t believe that anyone wants to stay on government assistance. “We need to help create a system where people can grow out of it, and we don’t have people depending on the government,” Garcia said. The conservative libertarian candidate said it was the encouragement of others and her faith that helped her overcome

her struggles and become a successful business woman and philanthropist. “I’ve experienced homelessness, hunger, and so on,” she said. “God was kind in leading me. He always provided me a way to create things and create marketing ideas.” It was through her God-given talents for business development that opportunities began to fall in her path. “Businesses would call me and say this is what we do. Can you help us come up with some ideas?” Garcia said. “I would research the business and end up having all of these ideas and just knew what to do.” In the 20 years since she first began creating business ideas, Garcia has worked with oil and gas companies, chambers of commerce, magazines, and has even supplemented her income with a lucrative singing and modeling career. But her business savvy and heart for the people are only some of the ways that Garcia is different from other presidential candidates. She also has a fresh take on the issue of policy-making. “I’m the only politician who doesn’t want to bring in a new policy,” she said. “I heard in my spirit that government just needs

to be cleaned out. We have a lot of good things in government, but there’s so much clutter on top of that.” Garcia said it’s like piling clean clothes on top of dirty clothes. “We don’t need new policies. We need to work together as a whole and find out where these things are conflicting and taking away the rights of the people,” she said. “Then we can truly grow as a country. I have the answers to fixing our problems with government programs and the current problems with our fading small businesses.” The former magazine publisher said she hopes that her unique political perspective and heart for the people will help her win votes and get elected. But she said that even if she doesn’t secure the nomination or the election, she will still be fulfilling God’s will for her life. “I will continue to be a voice for the voiceless whether I’m elected or not,” she said. Those who are interested in choosing Garcia to be their representative in the presidential race, can go to malisiagarciaforpresident.us and donate to her campaign.

Sugar Land Pastor Follows God’s Calling to Start Family-Oriented Church By Jessa McClure When Pastor Terry Darnell was a sophomore at Texas State University in San Marcos, he felt the Lord’s calling to go into full-time ministry. After graduating with a degree in physical therapy, he moved to Lafayette, LA to become a youth pastor at the local Family Life Church. “Everything was going great, and the youth were growing in their faith walks,” Darnell said. “But after four years there I felt the Lord calling me to start my own church somewhere.” For several months, Darnell and his wife prayed and sought the Lord about the location of their next ministry venture. They weren’t sure of where they should go, but after visiting some friends in Sugar Land, started feeling as if the Lord was telling them to move to a city where they only knew two people. “We moved here in June of 1999, and we’re about to celebrate our 17th year,” Darnell said. With just two parishioners, the pastor and his wife started what would become Family Life Christian Fellowship.
“We started going out into the community and meeting people,” he said. “I think our first official Sunday service had around 27 people, including children.” After meeting in their home for several months, they began to outgrow their facilities. “We rented a kids’ daycare from 1999 to 2006, which meant setting up and tearing down all of our sound equipment and ev-

erything else every Sunday for seven years,” Darnell said. In 2006 the church was able to purchase their own land where they built their first church building. When the first building was complete, the church had around 100 members. But over the next
few years, FLCF quadrupled in membership, prompting the construction of a larger building. Now the church has around 425 members on a Sunday, with more community members visiting or joining on a regular basis. Darnell believes that the growth of the church is based on the welcoming environment he and other ministry leaders help create. “Everybody wants to be loved and accepted, and to feel that something is genuine,” Darnell said. “I think our church has that. When you walk through the door, you are greeted. And our services are geared specifically to be authentic. We want to teach people faith that works in their daily lives.”

FLCF is not only genuine in their approach to faith and church relations, but they also have a passion for including a variety of cultures and generations. Darnell wants everyone to feel like they are a part of the family. Especially since his wife and children have been a part of the ministry from the beginning. “My wife works full-time here, overseeing our kids’ department,” he said. “And my kids have grown up in the church. From the beginning they were helping us set up chairs and put things on.” Because of its family approach, Darnell said that people who have been turned off by church in the past have found that FLCF is the place for them. “They like it here because it is genuine and they feel loved and accepted right where they’re at,” he said. Sunday morning worship services begin at 10 a.m. and are typically an hour and fifteen minutes in length. Age appropriate classes are provided for children from birth to fifth grade. FLCF is located just off McKasle Road between Old Richmond and Highway 6 at 16425 Old Richmond Road in Sugar Land, TX.

What If You Stay Home on Election Day? By Gary Gillen It looks like the November Presidential election will pit Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton. There are those who say they will never vote for Trump. Those folks have three choices. They could vote for Hillary. We will talk about what that means in a moment. Second, they could vote for a third party candidate if one exists by November. That is tantamount to voting for Hillary. Third, they could just stay home on Election Day. That will guarantee the election of Hillary. How bad would the election of Hillary be? We currently have a president whose economic policies have created the slowest recovery from a recession in history. Our current President, with the help of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Democrats in Congress forced down our throats a health

insurance program that is unaffordable, unconstitutional (according to a Federal Judge in a lawsuit brought by Congress against the Obama Administration) and has caused hiring to slow dramatically, prematurely pulled our troops out of Iraq allowing the takeover of much of that country by ISIS and requiring an increasing number of US ground troops, that he calls advisors, but are in combat situations to retake , used the IRS to target his enemies, gave defacto amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, has used Executive Orders to create and change settled law to his liking, has disregarded the Constitution and grovels at the feet of dictators while showing utter disrespect to our allies. He has allowed Korea to get away with firing missiles, Russia to invade our allies, an arms race to begin in the middle-east and China to flex its muscles in the China Sea. The list of failures is breathtaking. Hillary boasts that she will be a third Obama term. Oh, but it will be worse. She also wants to increase taxes even higher. She wants us to provide “free college” to everyone. She believes that government is always right and one size fits all, so she will increase the minimum wage by Executive Order across the nation regardless of the local cost of living. She will continue the Obama plan for more control over our lives by big government with the EPA, the IRS, the Energy Department and the Department of Education. A President Hillary Clinton will expand welfare, continue the out of control spending we currently have, destroy the oil industry as she and Obama have the coal industry and take away our Second Amendment rights. She will divide us and find ever more “victims” to which she will grant special rights.
Many of Obama’s most destructive actions have been by executive order. The next President will either repeal those orders or renew them. The next President will make key appointments to agencies across government and in the military. Is there any doubt that a President Hillary will double down on the Executive Orders and appoint more liberals, socialists, and the “victim” class to the Justice Department, the EPA, The Education Department, the IRS and every other department in government? Probably the most important reason that a President Hillary would be a disaster for our nation is the fact that the next President will appoint a replacement for the late Antonin Scalia to the Supreme Court and possibly three others. All of the unconstitutional actions of President Obama are working their way through the court system and ultimately be decided by a Supreme Court balanced by half liberal and half relatively conservative justices. There is no doubt a President Hillary would make an appointment that would tilt the court left for a generation. The damage to our nation by that one appointment alone brings me to this conclusion: If you love America, you must vote for the Republican candidate, even if it is Trump! Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control and Gillen Political Strategies in Richmond. He is the only person in history to have served on both the Richmond City Commission and the Rosenberg City Council. He was the Chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County 2006-2007. Fort Bend Christian Academy Athlete Signs National Letter of Intent Fort Bend Christian Academy senior Lynell Smith, Jr. signed a national letter of intent to continue competing athletically at the college level. Lynell Smith, Jr. will play football in the outside linebacker position next year for Trinity University, a Division III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference school in San Antonio, Texas. Lynell received All-District Honorable Mention-Linebacker recognition and maintained a 5.47 GPA his senior year. Because of his hard work on the field and in the classroom, Lynell received several scholarships, including Trinity’s Presidential Scholarship award. “I thank God for the opportunity that he has next year. He’s very excited and we are very proud of him,” said dad Lynell Smith, Sr. “His dream was to play college football so it’s a blessing that he is going to a top academic school, will get a great education and continue playing football. He is a perfect example that hard work pays off! He’s a great kid and I’m proud that he’s my son.” Lyell’s mom Tanya adds, “He is a humble kid who has a passion to learn and be successful. I am so proud of him.” Lynell actively serves in the local community and at his church, Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church in Richmond, Texas. “He is a tremendous individual and a wonderful kid,” said Pastor Robert Simpson. Steve Smith, FBCA Defensive Coordinator, commented, “Lynell
was a pleasure to coach. He exemplified the acronym ICE---Integrity, Character, and Example. He was the most improved player on the team this year and did an outstanding job all season long. He is well deserving of his chance to play at the collegiate level.” Varsity Football Head Coach David Roberts praised Lynell, “He is great young man, student, Christian, and player. He is what we want from our players and is an example for players in the future.” Lynell will major in Chemical Engineering and minor in Physics.

Don’t Let Your Kids Trade Their Wings for Worms By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein I heard a tale the other day that is especially applicable to today’s teenagers. Indulge me a moment, for it’s worth hearing: There once lived a bird and a fox. Naturally, the bird stayed up in her tree to avoid the fox’s fangs. One day, the fox made an offer to the bird. “Just give me one feather and when you wake up in the morning, a worm will be waiting for you.” The bird didn’t see the harm, so she went along with the deal. Sure enough, the next morning, a juicy worm was laid out for her dining pleasure. The fox said, “I’ll continue to provide you a delicious worm for a feather,” and the bird didn’t see the harm, so each day she exchanged a feather for a worm. Until one day when she descended the tree, enjoyed her meal, and faced the fox’s fangs. To her dismay, she found that she was unable to fly away, as she had given away all her feathers, and the fox proceeded to enjoy his own delicious meal. Our teenagers face similar offers and temptations on a daily

basis. I’ll just give in on this one little thing - no harm done - and I’ll be able to get this one big thing in return. I see it all the time, whether in academics or in their social world - they sacrifice a bit of themselves, their integrity, their honesty, their belief systems, their parental guidance – to get something that seems to come so easily, something they’d be insane to pass up.

They cheat, because studying and plodding through a multistep process is difficult and tedious. They lie, because telling the truth would be difficult or even painful. They do drugs, because being accepted in that moment is way easier than standing individually apart from the crowd. They have indiscriminate sex, because that momentary indulgence is more satisfying - and socially
acceptable - than holding out until it’s right. And yes, they hurt themselves in big and small ways because they’re thinking only of the shortterm, not the long-term implications. As parents, one of your primary responsibilities is to teach your kids not to give up their feathers for worms. Your kids should always know their bottom line. They should know where their family stands on the various issues and life circumstances they will encounter. It should be a regular topic of discussion in your home, and they should feel comfortable coming to you with questions and struggles they are facing. Their Christian beliefs will certainly strengthen their resolve but won’t stop them from facing temptations and having to make difficult decisions they’re not quite equipped to make at this age. Your teens need to know that they have the power of their parents behind their morals, ethics, and beliefs. When they can’t

But if you remain true to your convictions, it’s much more likely your kids will too. If you refuse to sacrifice yourself to societal pressures, your kids will be inclined to follow your lead. If you teach work ethic and the value of perseverance, your kids will also experience the thrill of truly earning something worthwhile. Your role model status cannot be overstated here – parents are the two biggest influencers in their kids’ lives, and you must not only tell them but show them that doing what’s right in the long term is so much more satisfying than taking the easy way out. Teach your kids that despite what society says, working hard to make your own way and letting go of the desire for instant gratification will give them the feathers to fly. summon the strength to stand up for what is right, they should be able to go to you for a recharge. You are not their cool friend who tells them to do whatever they think is best and you’ll support them one way or the other. You are their parents, their role models, their touchstones. You’re supposed to teach them right from wrong, even if they balk... especially if they balk because that’s when they need you the most. Yes, it’s exhausting to parent well, and you will make countless mistakes before your kids ever reach the age of adulthood.

Former International and Collegiate Baseball Coach Hopes to Change Lives One Athlete at a Time By Jessa McClure Texas native, Jeremy Browning, was a natural athlete growing up in Odessa, TX. He found a love for baseball, and even found himself playing at the college level with hopes of being drafted to the major leagues. But Browning said he knows now that God’s plan was different than the one he had planned for himself. The baseball player blew out his shoulder during his sophomore year in college, which ruined his chances of making it to the big leagues. But Browning didn’t give up on his dream of being a top athlete. “I started taking summer strength and conditioning courses,” he said. “With this training and having worked with some of the best baseball coaches in the country, I was able to put together a good baseball resume.” After graduation, Browning moved to Toronto and became a coach for the Ontario Blue Jays—an amateur baseball program. And while he was there, he used his

skills as a strength training expert to help train Olympic athletes including figure skaters and hockey players. His work with the Blue Jays led to a chance meeting with the recruiting coordinator for North Carolina State University. “[The recruiter] really wanted me because I not only had the baseball background, but the strength and conditioning background as well,” he said. From there he was to the University of Montevallo and turned the baseball team around, helping them reach the World Series. It was here that he met two young students who were passionate about starting a strength and conditioning business that would help people transform not only their bodies, but their minds and spirits. They called their business Iron Tribe Fitness, and although Browning was intrigued by their idea, he continued to climb the ladder of success in the athletic world, even building his own baseball team called the Dallas Dragons. It was after this experience that Browning decided to further his education by receiving an MBA in pharmaceutical sales. “I did really well,” he said. “But I was working all of the time, eating terribly and living on everyone else’s schedule but my own. My own health took a dive, and I became the largest I’d ever been.” Browning was miserable in his new body and felt like he was no longer living his best life. He was laid off from his

job soon after and realized that his lack of a job gave him the opportunity to pursue something he believed in and get his health back on track. The former baseball coach got in touch with some of his former players who had started Iron Tribe Fitness, and said he was interested in starting a franchise in his home state of Texas. With the help of a business partner, Browning was able to start the process of bringing the Alabama-based fitness company to the Houston area. “Working in the medical field, I saw so many people who had no hope,” Browning said. “I saw that Iron Tribe was making an impact not only on a physical level, but on a mental and spiritual level as well. I wanted to have that kind of impact, too.” Iron Tribe focuses on cardio, weight lifting, and body weight movement. But what really sets the strength training facility apart from other gyms is the highly-trained coaches, a community culture, and a class structure that facilitates a team mentality, Browning said. Through his work in bringing this unique fitness experience to his home state, Browning has reaped the benefits of the Iron Tribe program. “It’s been a blessing to me and my family,” he said. “I got my health back. I’m fitter and leaner than I was even in college. I took charge of my health again.” Browning said Iron Tribe isn’t just an ordinary gym. It’s a strength training experience that is truly a family. “We are a tribe of athletes with one common goal. That goal is to become the best, healthiest versions of ourselves,” he said.
“It’s not about being the biggest or the strongest. The measure of our strength is how we pick up that last person and push them ahead.” Not only does Browning’s new business help to support each athlete who comes to the Cinco Ranch location, but it also provides an environment where people feel free to live out their Christian faith. “One of our core values is creating lasting relationships, which help us to be comfortable sharing our faith,” he said. “We want to know your ‘why,’ and why you’re committed to getting healthier.” Browning said he can relate to those who have let the stresses and busyness of life get in the way of achieving a healthy lifestyle. “I can show each athlete what [Iron Tribe] did for me personally,” he said. “And it’s an opportunity to share my testimony.” The lifelong athlete hopes that all those who come to Iron Tribe will not only find a place where they can find a positive culture, but a place where they can find the motivation to lead healthier lives. “I want to help change the world one person at a time,” Browning said. The Cinco Ranch facility has already broken the record for fastest growth for the first month in only three full weeks of business. “I fully believe this is God placing people in our lives who need real life change through proper nutrition, personalized group training and accountability,” Browning said.

Recipe: Juiciest Hamburgers Ever “No more dry, lackluster burgers. These are juicy, and spices can be easily added or changed to suit anyone’s taste. Baste frequently with your favorite barbeque sauce. If you find the meat mixture too mushy, just add more bread crumbs until it forms patties that hold their shape.” Ingredients • • • • • • •
