As our hot summer months come to a close, we experience many mixed feelings toward the upcoming “Back to School” season. I, for one, am nostalgic as I watch my children grow into amazing young adults with each passing year. My two oldest are in college and my two youngest are in high school. It seems like it was only yesterday that I was holding my first son Gabriel’s tiny hand and walking him to his preschool class- he is now venturing out into the world as a junior in college. Even my youngest, Naomi, is starting high school this year. As all parents know, children are the Lord’s greatest gift to us and it is our responsibility to value them and ensure that they grow up with a good head on their shoulders. Our kids grow up far too fast and in the twinkling of an eye, they’re gone. I once heard a saying- “live every day as though it’s your last, because one day it will be.” I say to you- cherish every second with your child as if it’s the last because one day that will be the case. “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” - Psalm 127:3 Joseph R. Menslage President/Publisher Fort Bend Christian Magazine joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com

Letter From The Publisher I must ask you a question that I pray that you would humbly search your heart for. How would you describe your relationship with God? Would you agree that the most important relationship you will ever have in your life is with God? God is the creator, the beginning and the end, and the Alfa and the Omega. After all, he is the one who created all things great and small and nothing would exist unless God spoke it into existence. The Lord wants us to know and understand where we are in our relationship with him. In knowing this, those that truly love the Lord will take this as wisdom found and make the necessary changes in your life to have a closer walk with the Lord. Please know and understand that no one’s relationship is perfect in this world, but you can get it right with the Lord. If you truly love someone you would not want to hurt them in anyway, right? Wouldn’t you do everything you can to build that relationship, to show the person you love them and would do anything to keep them happy? This should be the same way within your relationship with God. Understand that every relationship you will ever have, you will have to do your part by putting some effort into keeping the romance going. If you don’t, at some point it will become a routine or began to whither. This is not only true in our earthly relationships, but also true in our spiritual walk with God. This amazing God we serve is a forgiving and loving God, so remember there is nothing that you could have done that you could not sincerely ask with you heart for forgiveness and he wouldn’t give it. God wants a personal relationship with you. He is just a call away. We truly thank you for supporting Fort Bend Christian Magazine, which brings you “family-friendly news with an eternal purpose.” Like our sister publication, Katy Christian Magazine, our mission is made possible only by the support of our Christian advertisers. C&C Dental Provide Comforting Care and Bring Help, Resources to Special Needs Children and Families By Jessa McClure When most people think of the dentist’s office, images of sterile instruments, white walls, and the smell of disinfectant might come to mind. But, when you walk in the doors of the C&C Dental office in Sugar Land you will feel as though you have stepped inside some-

one’s home instead. “Our reception area is like a living room,” said owner and dentist, Dr. Timothy Cashion, DDS. “We have a movie theater for the kids (and adults). And every treatment room has a massage chair, headphones and a TV. We want you comfortable.” This focus on their patients’ comfort comes from the dental experi ences the husband and wife team had as children. Cashion’s wife, Dr. Teresa Cody, DDS, suffered through painful dental visits growing up because her doctor didn’t believe in anesthetic. Her experiences were so traumatic that she even developed a fear of going to the dentist.

“I was probably one of the worst patients because of that fear,” Cody said. “It wasn’t until I was in college and was treated by a wonderful dentist that I discovered that dental visits could be pain-free and even pleasant.” The positive effect these visits had on her dental anxiety made Cody choose to go into dentistry herself. It was in dental school where Cody met her husband. He had chosen dentistry because he saw the power of its effects on his own self-confidence. “I first considered dentistry in elementary school. I remember being teased for having spaces or gaps between my teeth. I know what it is like to always be self-conscious about your smile,” Cashion said. “But through cosmetic bonding, I gained a fuller smile and the freedom to not have to cover my teeth every time I smiled.” After the couple married in 1992, they bought an existing practice in Sugar Land and began creating a dental environment where they planned to say “yes” to every situation. “We want to say yes to all of our patient’s needs,” Cody said. “For example, if someone says do you see kids, the elderly, special needs children and adults, we want to say yes. If they ask if we do root canals, braces, take out wisdom teeth, cosmetic dentistry or implants, we say yes. We want our office to be a one-stop shop.” The doctors’ desire to make the dental experience as painless as possible comes not only from their own childhood experiences, but from the struggles they’ve gone through with their children’s treatment.

Their daughter, Erin, needed braces due to severely overcrowded teeth. But many of the orthodontists they saw wanted to pull several of Erin’s teeth. Having that done herself as a young woman, Cody was determined not to let that happen to her daughter. “I decided then and there that if I couldn’t have my daughter treated the way I wanted, then I would do it myself,” she said. “Thus began a new passion for my career.”

After hundreds of hours of orthodontic training, Cody established her practice of non-extraction braces whenever possible. Now their daughter has a gorgeous smile and all of her teeth. “The result was well worth the study and dedication,” she said. Another passion the couple shares is for treating patients with special needs. Their son Neal was born with Down Syndrome in the 1990s. “We know the difficulties parents can face getting dental treatment,” Cody said. “We have a thorough knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the special needs child.” The couple has such a passion for children with special needs that they have even started the Changing Minds Foundation to further provide resources and help to other families. “Our mission is to spread awareness that treatment is available for many of the problems and symptoms of Down Syndrome and to share the amazing difference these treatments can make in the lives of children and adults with DS,” Cody said. The foundation has been a part of the community for 10 years and the doctors can see what a difference it has made in not only providing care, but connecting families with similar circumstances. “When our son Neal was born, we only saw the negative in his condition,” Cashion said. “But looking back, there has been one reward after another. And through our foundation we have helped improve other children’s lives and developed meaningful friendships. We have truly seen God at work.” Along with providing comfort, the doctors of C&C Dental also strive to provide a Christ-centered environment full of faith and prayer. “After 23 years, you see a lot of people coming and going every day. And a lot of these people are going through tough times—death, divorce, cancer and the list goes on,” Cody said.

“Sometimes it is difficult to know what to say to someone, but it is very easy to tell them we will pray for healing and strength. We want them to know we’re all in this together—good times and bad.”

Pastor Profile: Robert Burdett By Malisia Garcia Pastor Robert Burdett, of Power House Church, shared his excitement as he celebrated 19 years of ministry in the Katy community. Over the past 19 years, Power House Church has been reaching into the Katy community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ thru various ministries including Hitting the Streets (Feeding the Homeless), Love Lets Live (ProLife ministry), and various community outreach events throughout Katy. According to Pastor Burdett, “the church built Jordan Ranch Retreat Center in Schulenburg Texas in 2006. Through the retreat center, Power House has been able to minister to over 20,000 people who have attended various events held at Jordan Ranch. Power House and Jordan Ranch have been able to touch our Veterans by partnering with the Wounded Warrior Project. In addition, we have touched over 100 Texas High School coaches and their spouses through a program called Helping Coaches Coach where we minister to the couple on marriage, finances and mentoring. Power House and Jordan Ranch also host an annual men’s event called Intense Men. This is the largest men’s campout in Texas held on the 88 acres at Jordan Ranch. Last year we had a record attendance of 1300 men

camping at Jordan Ranch. The event is centered around sporting competitions such as 7on7 football, 3on3 Basketball, Paintball, skeet

shooting and much more. Most importantly we schedule teaching sessions on being a Godly man, husband, father and son”. With all that they do to help in the communities of Katy, I believe the name Power House Church fit them perfectly. This is the true meaning of ministry and a great example of showing a God kind of love. Found God and Heard His Call When asked Pastor Robert Burdett when did he accept of the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart as our lord and savior? He stated, ‘’In February of 1991, I accepted the Lord. I came out of a life of drugs and alcohol abuse as a teenager and young adult. God came into my life like a flood and rescued me from death both spiritual and physical. I have been a Power House member for over 15 years and have now been on staff for 4 years”. Pastor Robert Burdett first felt his call to preach the word of God about 6 years ago. At that time, he was working as a General Manager of a local manufacturing company making six-figures. Which made it a very difficult time struggling to understand how to leave that job and step out into the ministry by faith. Even though he had a hard time then with the decision his out look about that time in his life now is very different. He believes what he know now is that it was all a part of the process that God used to prepare him for stepping into the call. Accepted and Answer The Call About 4 years ago, “I went on a mission trip to Peru. We were planting a church in the north so we were on the streets praying for people and preaching the Gospel open air. We all were in a house

eating lunch when I met a Pastor from Peru whom I had never met. He looked at me and said, “God told me to tell you to discern the timing of God and that the time is now”. I knew exactly what he was talking about. I flew home to Katy and spoke to my Pastor in order to confirm what I was hearing. Within 2 weeks I went into work and resigned my position and stepped into full time ministry. God has blown me away by providing for me in so many ways”. Throughout his 15 years at Power House, he feels he has learned how to be a Godly man, husband to Yolanda Burdett celebrating 24 years of marriage in August and a father to 3 beautiful daughters; Ashlynn 19, Alexis 10 and Amaris 6. Taken on the responsibility to first be the Pastor in his home, which has equipped him to be able to Pastor God’s people at Power House Church. He Says, “Senior Pastors GF and Rose Watkins have poured out their lives into my wife and I and have mentored us through life and the challenges that we all run into. I would not be pastoring today if it weren’t for Ps GF and Rose commitment to my family and I. I describe my relationship to Ps GF like Timothy’s relationship to Paul. Everyone needs a Paul in their life”. Power House Church is a Spirit-filled church that believes in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He believes that God still performs miracles today and that nothing is impossible with God. Service hours of your church are Sundays at 10a - Main Service and Wednesdays at 7p - Man Church. Church address: 1818 Katyland Drive Katy, Texas 77493, Website address: www.powerhousechurch.tv, or by phone 281-391-0095 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Former Rice University Admissions Officer to Lecture on Ways to Slash College Costs Workshop is free – but fills up quickly… Katy, TX - An extremely popular lecture is being held again this year at Cinco Ranch Library for the parents of high school sophomores and juniors. The workshop, which is being offered without cost to attendees, will focus on little-known ways of getting grants and scholarships for college, regardless of GPA or how much money a family earns. The class will cover topics such as how to double or triple eligibility for scholarships (even if a family makes too much money to qualify for financial aid), the secret to attending a private college or university for less than the

price of a state school and the single biggest mistake that 9 out of 10 parents make when trying to figure out how to fund their child’s college education. This class is free and registration is required. Tickets are available on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Space is limited by the size of the room. It is being held at the Cinco Ranch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd., in Katy, on Thursday, August 20th from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The library is across the street from Cinco Ranch High School about one block from Grand Parkway/Hwy 99. Kurt Goedecke, ChFC, is teaching

the workshop. Mr. Goedecke is the former Assistant Director of Admissions at Rice University and a nationally recognized expert on college planning. A word to the wise – don’t wait to register. Past events have filled up quickly. To reserve a seat go to www.CollegeMoneyForTexans.org.

Healing the World From the Inside Out:

Dr. Steve Harris Uses His Chiropractic Practice, Humanitarian Efforts to Give Hope to the Lost, Hurting By Jessa McClure When local chiropractor, Dr. Steve Harris, was five-years-old, living in the heart of Houston, he began to see a change in his father. The seemingly invincible, Houston police officer was riddled with pain, living with the excruciating symptoms of a stomach ulcer. After visiting with three of the best doctors in the area, Harris’ father still couldn’t get relief. A friend suggested the policeman see a chiropractor. Although he was skeptical at first, he didn’t have much to lose. To his surprise, the treatments administered by the chiropractor relieved a pinched nerve that controlled the stomach and gave Dr. Harris’ father his life back. “After that my father took us all in to see the chiropractor for everything—whiplash, asthma and sports injuries,” Dr. Harris said. “I grew up seeing all of our neighbors, friends,

family and people at church find relief through this chiropractor. I saw what chiropractic could do. I loved the idea that I could treat and help people with my hands.” So, in the ninth grade, Harris decided to one day become a chiropractor and dedicate his life to helping others. “I was as young as you can be and go through all of the requirements,” he said. “I was a 23-year-old doctor when I first started. I’ve been practicing for 38 years, and I love having that much experience and still having some youth left.” He has seen generations of patients grow up before his eyes. “I had a patient on Tuesday that I’ve treated since he was four-years-old, and he’s 40,” Dr. Harris said. “I’ve treated parents, grandparents and grandchildren.” Dr. Harris has treated over 11,000 different patients in his career. Not only has he helped many of them get back on the road to a longer, healthier life, but he has also helped them grow closer to God. “I pray for my patients every morning when I’m on my way to work,” he said. “I pray that God will send me patients that I can help; especially those who are frustrated and haven’t found relief through other avenues.” Dr. Harris said he frequently hears patients say they were guided to him by prayer. Dr. Harris feels as though God has led these people to him specifically. Dr. Harris’ empathy for people and love for God began as a child. He grew up in a godly home where he attended church regularly. “When I was ten-years-old, my Sunday school teacher, Mr.

Pringle, talked about accepting Jesus as Lord and being baptized for forgiveness of sins and I did so. Then, when I was 11-years-old another teacher, Mrs Shepherd, was talking about Solomon and his special gift. She said he asked for wisdom and that’s the best thing to pursue. I have prayed for wisdom ever since. It has been my most prolific request.” His pursuit of wisdom, coupled with his heart for people, has led him to be used by God in some extraordinary ways. A dream, a Chinese leader and a Bible “I had a dream when I was 20-years-old that I was supposed to do something with China,” Dr. Harris said. “At the time, the only time I’d heard the word China was when my mom

would say, ‘finish the food on your plate. There are starving children in China who’d love to have this food.’”

His opportunity came a few years later, in 1979, when the leader of China, Deng Xiaoping, announced he was making a trip to Houston to tour Hughes Tool Company and NASA. “When I heard that on the radio I was in my car and I was in front of the Hughes Tool Company. I had just finished listening to a tape of a preacher who said, ‘do something big for God.’ I got the idea to give Deng Xiaoping a Bible.” Since the Chinese leader was a communist, the mayor of Houston was refusing his visit. So Louie Welch, who was president of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, decided he would show Xiaoping around. “My dad was a policeman for 26 years for Houston, but his last 10 years were spent as the head of security for Mayor Louie Welch. I called and shared my idea with Mayor Welch. He said he’d have to check with the state department.” In the meantime, Harris found a Bible written in Chinese and brought it to the former mayor’s home. Welch then gave the young doctor the bad news that the State Department said that he couldn’t give the Chinese leader a Bible. Harris thought for a moment and then said, “On our money it says ‘In God We Trust.’ Why can’t we give him something that represents what is on our money? Mayor Welch looked at me and said. ‘I’m glad you came over because I’m not ashamed to give anybody a Bible and I’m going to smuggle it to him.’” Welch was able to successfully get the Bible to Xiaoping and within nine months the communist country was opened once again to Christianity. “I’m not saying that it’s because of what I did or what Louie

Welch did, but it was exhilarating to be a part of what God was doing,” Harris said. Nicaragua and other humanitarian efforts Dr. Harris is a long-time member of Rotary, an international service organization. He first joined Rotary in 1977, and has been an active member ever since. In fact, in 1997-98, Harris was the Rotary District Governor over 57 clubs in nine counties. It was during this time that he became an early supporter and eventual humanitarian to a project that was helping to break the cycle of poverty in Nicaraguan villages. “We literally moved a village of 2,000 people living on a dump to a location five miles away that was situated on a peanut farm. We enabled them to build their own homes, plant crops, raise chickens, have clean water and sanitation,” he said. “Within 18 months they were in surplus production and self-sufficient. They went from sub-human conditions to breaking the cycle of poverty.” Harris later returned with other humanitarians to help build schools and provide a better future for the “Children of the Dump.” The project was such a revolutionary idea that Harris and others who had worked to make it happen were asked to speak to the United Nations in New York City about their work. Unfortunately, the day before they were supposed to make their speech happened to be one of the most horrific days in American history—9/11. “We set Rotary on fire about the project, but it all evaporated

after 9/11. It’s coming back slowly. The cycle of poverty has been broken for two more villages since then.” He has recently taken an interest in a different humanitarian effort that is helping to change the hearts and minds of inmates in Texas state prisons. It all started when Pastor Gary Hill became a patient of Harris. The two became friends and through their discussions, Hill asked the doctor if he’d ever heard of the work being done at Angola State Prison in Angola, Louisiana. When Harris said no, Hill offered to pay his way so he could see it for himself. “Nineteen years ago it was the most violent prison in the US; run by gangs, blood on the floor every morning,” Harris said. “Today, it’s the least violent. There are no more gangs. They’ve reduced violence by 85 percent, reduced their guards by 400 and are saving $16 million a year.” It all started with Burl Cain, a Christian warden who decided to give the inmates, most of whom were serving life sentences without parole, something to believe in. “They opened up a seminary in the prison for the inmates,” he said. “Two hundred and forty have gone through the full, four-year program and have become certified chaplains.” The warden has placed the chaplains in key positions in each cell block to influence other prisoners in a positive, Christ-centered way. Grove Norwood, with the Heart of Texas Foundation, had duplicated the Angola example for the first time at Darrington, a Texas maximum security prison with 1,800 inmates in Rosharon.

With the help of Senators Dan Patrick, John Whitmire, Governor Rick Perry and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Southwest Theological Seminary at Darrington was started. They now have about 150 inmates enrolled and just started the fourthyear students. They need a seminary facility. There’s a gym that’s not being used at Darrington that can be remodeled into this facility at a cost of $2.5 million. Dr Harris felt honored to be on the ground floor of this remarkable project. Together they have raised $1,060,000 so far. It is the goal of this effort to eventually send a certified chaplain to all of the 110 prisons in Texas. “We need to get this done! This could change our society from the bottom up,” Harris said. It seems as though Harris has had great fortune in finding great projects and works of God to be a part of. Why? Dr. Harris’ answer is: “God’s way is the best way! I recommend reading the Bible. I’ve read the Bible, cover to cover, six times. My inspiration in joining these causes comes from Matthew 25: 24 – 46: Jesus said whenever you help someone that is hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, a stranger, homeless or in prison... it’s the same as if you did it for Jesus. Also, Matthew 7:7 says to ask, seek, knock and it will be given to you. Do you know what hummingbirds and vultures have in common? They both find what they are looking for. God can use anyone to do special things. We plant, we water but God gives the increase. The power is God. It’s all about God.”

Five Generations of Philanthropic Women Continue to Change Lives Through Faith and Service By Jessa McClure As a child, Angeline Labbé-Auzenne, who runs her own preschool and non-profit organization, watched as her mother and grandmother gave everything they had to those in need, in service of their almighty Lord. It became not only a family tradition, but a family mission that Labbé-Auzenne hopes to pass to the next generation. “I am coming up on 53 and I can absolutely remember my grandmother sitting in her rocking chair reading her Bible,” Labbé-Auzenne said. “This was a daily, natural occurrence in our lives.” Not only did her grandmother, Odelia LaVergne-DeCloutte, spend hours poring over the pages of the Word of God, but she also spent hours serving and worshipping at her church, making sure to always cover her head when entering the sanctuary. “She had this lace wrap that she’d wear on her head,” Lab-

bé-Auzenne said. “Even though she was well-respected in the church—she was the leader of the women’s group—in God’s house

she showed humility. She taught us who you became when you walked into the sanctuary. You’re not much in relation to God.” Lavergne-DeCloutte also taught her children and six granddaughters about giving what they had to help those around them. She lived near the railroad tracks, and as homeless men and women

would come into the town on the train, she would offer them hot meals right off of her front porch. This tradition was passed down to her daughter, Rosa DeCloutte- Labbé, who served hundreds of people through her screen door. “My mother cooked very well, and people knew they could just stop by,” she said. “But, my dad said one day she was going to get hurt. So, she locked the front door up tight and would just go out the

back door. She thought that was the better way to do it.” Labbé-Auzenne’s mother also bought blankets in bulk when they were on sale and wrapped them in Saran Wrap. She’d then take her oldest children downtown to the poorest parts of the city and hand out the blankets to the poor and homeless. “We’d open up the windows just big enough to throw the blankets out,” she said. “Then the people would come get them. And if we’d saved our change, we’d throw the money out, too.” But the Labbé family not only lifted the spirits of the homeless, they also brought joy to the elderly and those in the hospital. “My mom sewed beautiful, purple-gray, taffeta dresses for us with aprons and headpieces. We’d put them on and visit elderly homes and do performances,” Labbé-Auzenne said. “Then when we turned 12, we became candy stripers and worked every summer helping in the hospital.” While Labbé-Auzenne and her family racked up countless hours of volunteer work, they never thought of their time helping others as anything out-of-the-ordinary. “It was just who we were,” she said. “We never called it anything. We didn’t say we were doing philanthropy. Nothing like that was ever said.” It was this attitude that led Labbé-Auzenne to start her own non-profit organization, the Bayou Belles Charity Service Organization. “For myself, the larger non-profits could be intimidating,” she said. “So, I started a non-profit where regular people learn how to serve on a board and how to give without expecting anything in return. No one makes a salary. Everything that comes in goes right back out.”

The organization focuses their fundraising efforts on programs and organizations who help children. “The money we give goes where the pain is,” she said. “Some of our donations have gone to abused children and art programs.” But, Labbé-Auzenne didn’t stop there. She also started the Centerra Ranch Montessori School, where philanthropy was written into the curriculum. “The children participate in one, sometimes two fundraisers a year,” she said. “They know what they’re raising money for. They take responsibility even though they’re three, four and five. They know what their totals are and that the school will match it.” The Head of School has been so impressed with the children’s enthusiasm for helping others that she hopes other preschools in the area pick up on the idea and begin to include a philanthropic element to their curriculums. “I hope other schools catch on to that idea because you can be brilliant and not be kind,” she said. “If you don’t deliberately teach children that there are children wanting for everything, then they won’t learn it.” Labbé-Auzenne has used this principle in the raising of her own children, 30-year-old Sarah and 13-year-old Ethan. Her son, has already logged more than 550 volunteer hours since the age of seven. “He works right alongside of me—every project, every gala,” she said. “It’s not presented to my son that it’s philanthropic. It’s just who we should be. We should be the same people that are family was in 1914. We’re no longer feeding people off of the porch, but our hearts and minds have stayed exactly the same.” She hopes that future generations will take up the torch and continue the faith-based work that was started by her grandmother,

who is still going strong at 101-years-old. Labbé-Auzenne and the other matriarchs of the family have already begun instilling these ideas into the youngest member of the family, seven-month-old Remmi Grace-- Labbé-Auzenne’s granddaughter. “If we all funnel into her what we’ve learned, then there’s no doubt that she’s going to do something life-changing,” she said. Even though Labbé-Auzenne has had great examples, she believes that anyone can use what they have to help others. “Everybody has something to give, even it if it’s 30 minutes and one dollar,” she said. “Regular people can do amazing things.”

Estate Planning is More than Just “Death Planning” By Margie Connolly, Attorney at Law Estate planning clients usually come to an attorney to eliminate taxes, avoid probate and provide for their family. We attorneys routinely help our estate planning clients achieve all of these goals. Most people, when they initially sit down with us, only see estate planning as death planning. But planning for your death is only part of the equation. The other, potentially more critical part, is disability planning. With proper disability planning, if you cannot make your own decisions because of an accident of illness, your bills can be paid, your assets can be managed, and your health care decisions can be made by the people you love and trust the most. Unfortunately, whether you are married or single, faulty and inadequate estate planning often results in a judge stepping in to make important decisions regarding your assets and estate; the family then loses a large measure of a very precious commodity: CONTROL. Estate planning attorneys not only focus on disability and death, but also strive to maximize your control during your lifetime and the

control you want your loved ones to have at the time of your death. In addressing both death and disability concerns, attorneys have a toolbox full of proven legal techniques to help your family reach all of your goals.

of your debts, and passing of your property after your death. It can also be used to designate your burial wishes and name guardians to care or your minor children. A Will will dispose of all your property that is not contained in your Trust, if you have a Trust.

These include:

• Financial and Medical Powers of Attorney allow you to name the person you trust to deal with your financial and/ or medical needs should you become temporarily or permanently unable to do so yourself.

• Revocable Living Trusts, • Wills, • Financial and Medical Powers of Attorney, • Living Wills (Advance Directives), • Designations of Guardians for minor children and • Special Needs Trusts for families with special needs adults. Probate often comes with a substantial amount of legal, financial and emotional costs. With careful estate planning clients can avoid most of these, at a time when their family most needs to feel in control. • A Revocable Living Trust is an instrument which is used to avoid estate taxes and probate litigation, by defining the current and future ownership of your assets in the trust. The trust becomes owner of the property, although you may retain the power to buy, sell and trade, by naming yourself as initial trustee. The property in the trust passes, according to the terms of the trust, as in a contract for insurance, and does not need to go through probate court for possession of the property to be transferred after your death.

• Advance Directives allow you to express your wishes concerning continuing or discontinuing life-sustaining treatments such as feeding tubes and respirators, should you be diagnosed with a terminal condition from which you would die without such treatments. These are just brief descriptions of the tools that estate planning attorneys have to assist you with providing for your family’s needs, and your desires for the disposition of your property. It is highly recommended that you make an appointment to meet with a competent estate planning attorney, familiar with the laws of your state of residence, before deciding which documents best meet your needs. Running 101: Running for Beginners By Allison Robb So, you’ve decided to start a running program. Although you may be full of excitement, you may also feel slightly anxious. I’m sure you are asking yourself several questions like, how far, how fast, how often, and so on. Just follow these simple tips and your running anxiety could easily turn into a lifelong hobby. Let’s first talk shoes. Before you start your program, you must think about your footwear. Will you be running on terrain or the street? You need to make sure your shoes compliment the type of exercise that you will be performing. If you will be running on the street or inside on a treadmill, it is imperative that you wear a shoe specifically for running. Typically, you can get 400-600 miles out of your running shoes. It’s

a large range, I know, but your build, running style and training load all factor into what end of that range your shoes will fall. If you are feeling sore arches, shin pain or achy knees, then I suggest you look into a new pair of shoes. Now that you have the right footwear, you are ready to hit the pavement! If you are starting your running program for the first time or have been off of your regimen for more than three months, I suggest you start with walking for two minutes and jogging for one minute. Do this in intervals for up to twenty minutes to start. Let’s define jogging… How fast is a jog? You should be able to carry on a conversation as you jog. Twenty minutes, three times a week for the first two weeks is a great start to your running program. As this interval becomes easier for you, interchange your jogging and walking; walk for one minute and jog for two minutes. Do these intervals until you can easily work up to jogging for the full twenty minutes. Many of us have experienced side stitches or cramps. Side

stitches are caused by a lack of oxygen in your GI muscles. To stop them, exhale hard and long while bending over at the waist. To relieve other muscle cramps, be sure to hydrate prior to exercising and stretch after your first two minutes of walking. Once you have completed your exercising for the day, do not forget to stretch. Many of us are so tired from our vigorous workout that we underestimate the importance of stretching once we are done. Spending the proper amount of time stretching at the end of your workout will not only help you relieve soreness, but will also detour future injuries. Good luck and happy trails! Zerwas Saves Texas Students $160 Million, Expands Opportunity By Gary Gillen A college education can be quite expensive. Students who apply themselves can “place out” of classes by scoring high points on AP tests. If a student knows a subject well enough, the theory goes, to score well on an AP test why should he have to take, and pay for, that class? Some institutions of higher education, for reasons of their own, began requiring such unrealistically high scores that they effectively disallowed the practice. With single class credits averaging $284 per credit hour, parents and students paid a high price for the decisions of these institutions. Dr. Zerwas felt this was unfair. He wrote House bill 1992 to address this issue. The bill requires institutions of higher education to accept credit scores of 3 or higher unless the institution can show though evidence based research that students with a score of 3 or more are insufficiently qualified for

the course. With this bill Zerwas saved our students $160 million. State Representative John Zerwas, M.D. worked tirelessly to

bring higher education opportunities to students in the Fort Bend County area. His success will benefit the youth of our area for generations. Recognizing the need of Katy area students for a high quality education and convenience he used his position in the leadership of the House of Representatives to make the dreams of our children a reality. Named Chairman of the House Committee on Higher Education Zerwas, well respected by his colleagues in the House and Senate, wrote House Bill 100. This bill provides authority for the University of Houston to acquire land and build a campus in the Katy area. Great news for Katy students! The bill provides authority for institutions of higher education to issue bonds for the purpose of acquisition of land, construction of facilities and renovation of existing facilities. The $3.1 billion the bill authorizes will target 64 projects in Texas with3 in Fort Bend County. In addition to the acquisition and construction of the University of Houston facility in the Katy area it also will allow for the construction of a new building at the popular Sugar Land campus. The University of Houston/Wharton County Junior College campus has been a victim of its popularity and is overcrowded limiting opportunities for students. An additional building will open more space for students. With the construction of the University of Houston at Katy and the new building at the University of Houston campus at Sugar Land educational opportunities for students in Fort Bend County and west Houston improved dramatically. As our economy continues to move toward technology based jobs education becomes even more important. Dr. Zerwas’ leadership in this effort is remarkable

in its vision. Recognizing that there is also a great need for skills education he also included funds in the bill for construction of a new campus for the Texas State Technical College in Rosenberg. TSTC has existed in Fort Bend County for over a decade in partnership with Wharton County Junior College at its well- attended Richmond campus. Overcrowding has hampered both institutions. The construction of the Rosenberg campus by TSTC will create room for expanded technical education and relieve overcrowding for classical education at WCJC in Richmond. House bill 658, also written by Zerwas, created the mechanism for the TSTC campus for Fort Bend County. In order for this long time dream for many in our area to come true Zerwas wrote the bills to create the Fort Bend campus and House Bill 100 to finance construction. Both of these bills will offer our students more opportunities to become better educated and make Fort Bend County attractive to businesses by creating a well-educated workforce. Dr. Zerwas’ vision will pay dividends in Fort Bend County and Texas for years to come. Fort Bend County students and businesses are benefitting from the representation of John Zerwas.

Dear Doctor: What is “Swimmer’s Ear” and How Can I Prevent It? By Dr. Behrooz Saffari Swimmer’s ear or Otitis Externa is an acute infection and inflammation of the ear canal. Patients with Otitis Externa typically are presented with an acute ear pain with or without discharge or decreased hearing. Bacterial infections are the most common cause of Otitis Externa. Additional causes include idiopathic, swimming, earwax buildup, trauma, chemical irritants, fungal infection and others. The treatment is directed towards the cause of Otitis Externa and it is usually treated with 7 to 10 days of topical antibiotics prescribed by a physician. There are a few simple things that can be done to reduce the risk of getting Otitis Externa. Consider wearing occlusive earplugs when swimming. For those patients who have recurrent cerumen impaction or buildup of ear wax, removal of earwax regularly by a physician is highly recommended. Avoid using the common ear cotton-tipped swabs for ear cleaning since they may cause irritation of the ear canal and potential risk for Otitis Externa.

Leaders and Mentors By Pastor Cardenas Leaders are those who are not satisfied with the existing mediocrity that is not producing the type of lifestyle that they have dreamed or envisioned. Given that they will not give up until they have surpassed the condition, they seek the necessary answers in order to overcome their condition, take the necessary steps to improve their condition, and as a result enjoy their realized blessings. However, a true leader does not stop at only enjoying the blessings they have achieved. Rather, a true leader looks at their surroundings and opens their heart to share with others the success they have achieved. In essence, a true leader becomes a bridge to success so their family and the world can also reach their dreams. So you would ask, a leader must share with others? My answer would be a resounding yes, but their sharing must be in a most efficient manner which is achieved when they lead others to success by duplicating the same methods in

others they used to obtain their dreams. Most people want a leader to share the success that cost the leader a process of learning and actions in order to achieve. A true

leader, however, does not do that because it would be very damaging and humiliating for the recipient. The leader understands that the message that is hidden behind simply sharing his success and what will be received in the subconscious mind of the individual is that the individual is useless and unable to succeed on their own. To do so would reiterate the notion that the individual is unable to win in life and they must depend on the fact that others win so that they can also eat and pay their bills. In essence, that absent the help of a successful person they are unable to succeed on their own and as such are true losers. And the truth is that this notion of inadequacy absent a hand out from a person who is successful is a lie. The truth is that all men are created equal with all the potential and abilities needed to succeed in life inside of them. The Creator implanted in all individuals the gifts and talents that He knew they would need in order to be winners in life. Herein lies the question, if all men are created with the equal abilities to win why are there winners and losers? The answer is simple, the winners sought and found the potential that was within themselves, became empowered by serving others, and in doing so developed those skills and abilities that we all have to win, but lay dormant in most. The leader awoke the potential and abilities inside of them and put them to work for them and ultimately came to see their dreams realized. Accordingly, the primary objective of a true leader should be instruction to those that seek them. A leader must instruct others on realizing the potential and abilities that are within them and how the individual can exercise them to achieve success. Think about the people that have come into your life. Under-

stand that God sent them to you and if they are still in the same condition five years later than when you met them and have not achieved your level of success and growth, they have wasted their time and deserve another opportunity to be instructed by a true leader. Accordingly, they must necessarily leave you and seek instruction elsewhere. Do not get mad when they do. While it is possible you have been to the best seminars and obtained the highest credentials and qualifications, you are not the appropriate leader for them. Put it in this perspective, Jesus the most noted and exemplary leader of all time only needed three years to establish a generation of winners. Indeed, you will need to find a true leader to provide instruction in you so that you can in turn provide that instruction in others. This notion requires much humility. However, humility is a quality that is needed in order to become a true leader and a winner. It is almost impossible to be a true leader in life without humility. Without humility it is impossible to be a mentor to others and for others to entrust you with their journey to success and achieving their dreams. Remember the adage of old; the blind cannot lead the blind as both will fall into the pit. Many so-called “leaders” today are in the proverbial pit with their followers. If this applies to you, choose today to seek appropriate mentorship so that you may succeed and help others to achieve success also. In addition, take a moment to appreciate where you were prior to your success and where you are now. Be grateful to God and to those true leaders that took the time to provide instruction, that overlooked your ignorance and immaturity and ultimately made sure that you too won in life and realized your dreams.

A Tribute to Phil Lineberger October 26, 1945 – May 31, 2015 ”as seen through the eyes of a friend” Dr. Arthur Phillip Lineberger, pastor of Sugar Land Baptist Church and former president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas died in Sugar Land on May 31, 2015 at the age of 69. Growing up in Texarkana Phil graduated from the University of Arkansas where he played football for the Razorbacks and later worked in the athletic department. He attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned his masters and doctorate degrees. Dr. Lineberger has served as a regent at both Baylor University and William Jewell College, and as a trustee at Dallas Baptist University. In addition he served as a director of the Associated Baptist Press, now Baptist News Global. During his time in Dallas he served as Vice-President of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association. Before arriving in Sugar Land, Dr. Lineberger served as pastor of First Baptist Church Tyler and Richardson Heights Baptist Church. Previous pastorates included Metropolitan Baptist Church in Wichita Kansas, Calvary Baptist Church of Huntsville, Arkansas, and associate pastor of Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth. All totaled, Dr. Lineberger pastored churches for 48 years with the last 19 and 1/2 years in Sugar Land. Dr. Lineberger is survived by his wife Brenda, three daughters Becky Groves, Amy Seay and Kathy Lineberger; their husbands and 10 grandchildren with another grandchild to be born soon.

Now, for the Pastor Phil we came to know and love at Sugar Land Baptist, I want to share a glimpse through my eyes. Phil Lineberger came to Sugar Land on October 15, 1995 to preach in view of

a call and he officially began his ministry here November 19, 1995. But my relationship with Phil went back a year and a half earlier. Serving on the pastor search committee to bring a pastor to the formerly Williams Trace Baptist Church we were looking for a pastor with decision making wisdom yet having the youthful energy to lead a young vibrant church in the middle of one of the fastest growing communities in America. After conducting a nationwide search, it did not take long for the cream to rise to the top. Phil stood heads above other great candidates and really offered much more than we could have ever anticipated. This is an exert of what I shared with our church dated October 15, 1995; “As we have journeyed in this process, the one thing I have realized is that sometimes we think little when God thinks big. God in His infinite wisdom knows the task ahead for us and has brought us the man he has singled out to lead us. As we have done our homework with all our background checks, the comments we continually hear are: Now how large is your church? Are you sure he is coming there? All across the denomination there is a state of wonder when our candidate’s name is mentioned about coming to WTBC…… As you can see, God has worked during our search in leading us to our candidate. The mystery of seeing how God is coordinating the bringing of a pastor with the acquisition of land to relocate is a miracle to behold. The best years of our church lie ahead of us and God is equipping us with the right person capable of leading our church.” Yes, for our church, Phil was a bright shining star who shined his light on not just our church, but the entire Sugar Land community as he took an active role shaping the lives of so many he touched. Phil was a true witness for Christ as he took on an earthly role that reflected the essence of Jesus’ life and teachings as he met people where they were. For me

the star light Phil shined on my life can be seen in the five points of the star that best describe Phil’s character. The first point he showed was excellence. Phil was all about excellence in every aspect of his life. As he took on the challenges of relocating our church from its former location, to the selling of the property, to the buildings where we are currently located, he always stressed to us to give God our best whether it was creating a facility to equip us to do God’s work or giving our best in working to accomplish God’s mission for our church. Another area he stressed excellence was in our discipleship and Bible study. Understanding he was a well learned Bible scholar, he demonstrated, understood and stressed the importance of Bible study in helping us to grow in spiritual maturity. I feel the excellence Phil demonstrated was a product of his strong work ethic learned as a child growing up and was a reflection of his persona until the end. Phil’s excellence carried over to the other four points of his star. For the second point, I have always been amazed with Phil’s ability to connect with people in a way to not just know a name, but to invest in people’s lives to develop relationships. He was able to relate with all types of people from the popular well known to the shy introverted person. His love and concern for people I believe is what enabled this sticky faith to draw people to him enabling God to witness through him. I often spoke of Phil as a man for everyone; by that I mean there was not one ounce of arrogance in Phil or what I call a “holier than thou” attitude with him. Phil being a “normal” man was going through the same feelings and emotions we would experience and he was quick to relate and expose his life in a transparent way that we were able to understand we were not alone but Phil was walking with us in our faith journey whether it was in the

good times or the bad. And, I might add Phil was this way for all, not just the selected few; and not just for members of our church. As you would expect the tip of the star devoted to relationships exemplified the people person Phil was. The next area Phil excelled in was a genuine caring for everyone he touched. Phil was not just a thinker and an idea man, but he was a doer, a get your hands dirty type of a friend that would stand by your side along life’s troubling ways in an effort to lead, support, and care for everyone’s needs whether you were a church member or an acquaintance at Starbucks or Kroger’s. He always seemed to not just be there but actually cared and then did something about it. This too goes back to that sticky faith relationship he was demonstrating in the lives of everyone. Along with caring, Phil was giving. He gave so much of his life, time, and money for others, no one will ever know. Whether it was in our church, our community, our state, our nation, or across the world Phil had a heart for missions. I truly believe he was taught this by the way so many reached out to him as he grew up in the projects surrounded by poverty. I feel this was the reason Phil did not mind giving of his money or material possessions to better the lives of those not so fortunate. Under his leadership, our church has given to so many missions locally and around the world. And in giving not just our money, Phil has taught us the importance of going, doing, and sharing in the name of Jesus. That last point on Phil’s star connects it all together. This was his fun loving, prank pulling humor that could break the ice or tension in any room or situation. It was contagious because he truly loved people and he loved to laugh with them and yes sometimes at their own expense but it was all in a no harm fun way. I could go on

for hours about his fun loving personality and the stunts he played on others, but those stories are for another time. I, as you, have been around or known many other charismatic people who were engaging and could draw a crowd around them; but what sets Phil apart from the other magnet people as I call them were the crowds Phil drew around him were always on the same level with Phil and were never below him. He saw himself as everyone’s equal. Phil, and not just to me; but to everyone else was a real person whose star illuminated many lives. I was not on earth during Jesus’ time, but if I wanted to see what we are called to do in following Jesus’ lead for our witness, I did not have to look far by the way Phil went about his life: (1) his model of excellence in everything he took on; (2) his ability to connect and develop those sticky faith generating relationships with all peoples in all levels of life; (3) the way he cared; (4) how he was always giving to people; and (5) the way he made life fun and exciting. As Christians, we have a relationship with Jesus. What is not fun and exciting about that? Yes our roads will experience bumps, turns, and detours just like I have experienced this week with the loss of a dear friend. But what Phil has shown me and I have learned from his life is that our true joy is found in our commitment to Jesus Christ. He is our healer, our comforter, our supporter and most importantly, our savior. Even though Phil’s star has gone out on earth, he still shines brightly through all the lives he has touched along the way. For you see that is God’s plan for using Phil’s life; it is through the impact he has had on our lives. Phil, my dear friend you will be missed but never forgotten. Your brother in Christ, Dennis
