Letter from the Publisher Twenty years ago, when I was a member of Houston’s First Baptist Church, each Sunday school class was assigned a family to “adopt” for Christmas. The church had identified many families within the community who were in need, and we all worked together to provide them with Christmas gifts. The family I had the opportunity to serve was one I’ll remember for the rest of my life. My class adopted a young Hispanic family with two daughters, who were roughly 5 or 6-yearsold. My wife and I were part of the delivery team that took gifts and a Christmas meal to them. When we arrived at their apartment complex in Spring Branch, at first I thought it was a condemned property. Most of the apartments were boarded up, and driving through the parking lot was similar to driving through an army artillery field because of the many, deep potholes. Our destination was one of the few apartments that wasn’t boarded up. Our team gathered the gifts and warm meal and knocked on the family’s door. When the mother and father opened their door and invited us in, it was apparent that they had very little to their names. I don’t even think that they had electricity. When we presented them with their gifts and the meal, the precious little girls’ eyes lit up. Their father and mother, who were overcome with gratitude, broke down in tears. Like so many of you, I cannot for the life of me recall the majority of the material objects I’ve received for past Christmases. In fact, I can’t even remember the gifts I received last Christmas. This is not to say that presents can’t be wonderful and enjoyable; they certainly can be. However, out of my years on earth, the Christmas that impacted me the greatest was a day of giving, not receiving. Standing in that family’s household reminded me that everything my wife and I possessed was given to us by the Lord’s grace alone. This Christmas, I encourage all of you to incorporate this mindset into your lives. Finding the time and the means to serve others is the greatest gift of all.

Classic Chevrolet Focuses on Customers and Community By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein As owner of Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land, Jeff Sebastian has one guiding philosophy: Buying and maintaining a car should be a positive, pleasant experience. If you’ve done either at other dealerships, you know that’s not always the case. So the fact that Classic provides customers with great care consistently is of special note. It has been rewarded with substantial growth in all areas of the company, from its customer base to service, parts and sales. Sebastian contributes the growth to two factors: the customer experience and the dealership’s dedication to giving back to the community. First, Classic prides itself on providing a VIP experience for car buyers. They empower their salespeople to work a deal from beginning to end. That awful experience where your salesperson disappears in the middle of negotiations for an unknown boss’s approval on a price? You won’t find that at Classic. “I want each customer’s buying experience to be efficient,” Sebastian said. “I want them to trust their salesperson and know they’re getting a good deal. There’s no good cop/bad cop here. It’s about earning customers’ trust and creating a positive buying experience for them.” Sebastian is quick to point out that buying a vehicle is only the first step in the customer experience. A purchase may take a couple of Continued on page 10

hours, but over the lifetime of your car, quality of service is what counts. Sebastian explained, “Whenever we sell you a vehicle, we’re in the very beginning stages of our relationship. Throughout ownership, we’ll be there every step of the way. It’s not fun having an oil change or dealing with car trouble. So we go out of our way to make an unpleasant experience more pleasant.” This includes efficient service, regular communication, complimentary car washes, a fleet of loaner cars, and even a shuttle to your home or office. These services go a long way toward keeping customers happy. What Sebastian sees as even more important, however, is the attitude of Classic’s employees. While experience and productivity are great attributes to have in a team member, as Sebastian says, “I hire on attitude and personality and for us, in a service-oriented industry, I will only hire people with great, positive attitudes. We really want our customers to have a Chick-fil-A or Disney experience at our dealership.” The second aspect of the Classic philosophy that has contributed to its growth is its commitment to the community and those in need. Classic gives back hundreds of thousands of dollars each year and is visible across Fort Bend as sponsors and contributors. Its annual Chili Cook Off is a popular event that in 2018 drew a crowd of 4,000 and raised over $60,000 for first responders and law enforcement. Classic donates Continued on page 13

and contributes financially to Fort Bend Meals on Wheels, and the employees volunteer personal time to deliver meals to those who are homebound. In addition, as title sponsor for the annual Boogie, Classic supports the Fort Bend Women’s Shelter, providing a safe haven for those escaping abuse. “We have a philosophy that we owe it to the community to give back,” said Sebastian. “Everything is reciprocal. We want people to know that when they do business with us, any money they spend trickles back into the community.”

December 2018 / January 2019

Jeff and Tiffany Sebastian have busy careers and are actively engaged in giving back to the community, but they are also involved parents. Their son, Grayson Blake Sebastian, recently won the International Modeling Award at a competition in New York City. People from all over the world attended the event, and it was a unique, rewarding experience for Grayson, a student at Sugar Land Preparatory Academy. Grayson started his modeling career in October 2017 after being noticed on YouTube tutorials, where he enjoys recreating Hollywood classics and 80’s film favorites. While the recognition has been impressive, Mom Tiffany values Grayson’s modeling as a fantastic avenue for learning crucial life skills. “Being on time for auditions and productions has taught Grayson the importance of discipline and punctuality. Changing of directions given by directors also teaches him self-control. It has built his self-confidence. It is building a strong work ethic. It is teaching him amazing social skills, especially in adapting to new people and environments.” Grayson enjoys modeling because it exposes him to peo-

ple of different backgrounds and age groups. Modeling has opened acting doors for him, and both have allowed him to travel and make friends all around the world. Attending a small college prep school has allowed Grayson to have a non-traditional education while meeting the demands of the modeling and acting industries. While at school, he enjoys a small teacher to student ratio, and Sugar Land Preparatory Academy allows him to be flexible and hop on a flight when needed. Of course, he couldn’t do this without the support of his parents, who stress the importance of priorities and encourage him to follow his passions. Tiffany said, “Jeff and I feel that actors are emotional athletes. Actors and models must master certain skills to become great at their craft. Being a part of this industry requires Grayson to put himself out there in front of the public eye. He must be self-confident but humble, and always polite.”

Modeling and acting are helping Grayson be ready for whatever he encounters in life. Jeff and Tiffany are helping him keep his focus in the right place and supporting him as he follows his dream.

Why Your Thrifty Wife Wants a Gift This Christmas By Jordan Harrell Several years ago, the diamond fell out of my mom’s wedding ring and was lost forever. Being a family of educators, my parents weren’t really in the position to run down to the jewelry store and pick up a diamond. The obvious fix was to replace it with a CZ and wait it out until a diamond became a more feasible option. Eventually, that day came. I went down to the jeweler with my mom to decide between an oval or round cut (oval… looked bigger, duh), before heading to McDonald’s, your typical post-diamond-purchase restaurant. While I sat in the car in the parking lot and nursed the baby, my mom and I mulled over our guilt: why do we care? WHY does it matter? Why do rings and diamonds and presents and flowers and material things matter? Why do we even want them? Clark and I had just wrapped up our fourth Christmas as a married couple, the third in which we hadn’t bought gifts for each other. I’d always felt a little sad about that but had never wanted to admit it. I don’t need anything. So why do I want him to get me something? Aren’t I being materialistic, selfish, greedy? This thought continued to nag me. Why do I care? Because he doesn’t care. He finds it completely wasteful. He doesn’t need anything, and neither do I. So why do I want one?? Am I really that Continued on page 16

worldly? But maybe it’s not about the gift,. Maybe it’s more about what the gift represents. 1. She wants to know you know her. She wants to know that you know what she likes, what she doesn’t like, what she wears, what she reads, what she craves, what she pines after. She wants to know that she’s not just a forgotten appendage, something you need and like but sometimes forget about. She wants to know you pay attention, even now. 2. She wants to know she’s worth it. Not the money. It’s not about the money. Really. She wants to know she’s worth the time and energy. It seems like all of that is given to the kids these days. This is your chance to prove to each other that you’re willing to go out of your way and spend time you don’t have to bless one another. 3. She wants to know you sacrificed… for her. She wants to know you gave up a night of SportsCenter to go to the mall, a place you detest. Or even just ten minutes of SportsCenter to order something online. We’ll take that. 4. She doesn’t want y’all to forget about “us”. When you get married, romance can wane. When you have kids, romance gets pooped on, spit up on, and then forgets to take a shower. Romance tends to wear pajamas all day and doesn’t have time for makeup. It takes concerted, purposeful effort now to remind each other that you really do love and appreciate one another. A lot. Christmas tends to be all about the kids, which is mostly our fault, but let’s not forget about us. At some point, even if it’s just for thirty seconds in between tantrums and feedings, let’s just focus on you and me.

Is Your HOME Ready for POOL SEASON?

5. She wants your kids to see it. She wants your kids to see that passion and romance and desire don’t die when you get married. Can you do this a million other different ways throughout the year? Yes. And I hope you do. But she wants your children to know that y’all aren’t just parents, you’re also lovers (Gross. I can’t believe I just used that word). You love to shower each other with affection, and sometimes that comes in the form of a gift. And let me be clear: she wants to do all these things for you too. She wants you to see that she knows you. She wants you to know that you’re totally worth obsessing over the perfect gift for months. She wants you to open her gift and be floored by her thoughtfulness, to feel like she really pays attention to you. She wants you to feel LOVED, even if it’s mostly her love language. You can speak a foreign love language, right? It’s not about spending a lot of money. I don’t expect a red-ribbon adorned Lexus in the driveway. In fact, I might be a little upset. Merry Christmas, here’s some debt. If you wrote a long letter about how thankful you were for your marriage, we might cry those happy tears. And that’s FREE. Husbands like that word. Let’s just set these expectations out on the table. It simplifies things doesn’t it. We want something. Nothing big. Just something. Something that says you love us. Something that says you went out of your way for us because you cared about making us feel adored. And maybe in return you’ll get a little som’n som’n too… Like a necktie. Cufflinks. Boxers. Something. December 2018 / January 2019

The Thing About Miracles By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein The thing about bad news is that you rarely see it coming. Life is moving along, you’re caught up in the minutiae, and BAM! Tragedy strikes. When that happens, many grab ahold of their strength, or their family and friends, or modern science, and do whatever is in their ability to get through the tragedy. If you’re a Christian, you pray. If you’re a pastor, you pray, all the while hoping that you are a living testimony to the power of prayer. Pastor Hernan Castaño of Rios De Aceite church had a life that was moving along nicely. He was in his sixth year of pastoring and was celebrating the construction of a new church building. It was 2006 and he was excited about his growing ministry. Then he asked God what was next. He specifically asked God to provide miracles within the church. Six months later, God provided a new spiritual journey for Castaño that would test his faith and eventually provide just such a miracle. It began when Castaño went to the doctor for what he believed was a sinus infection causing congestion just below his left eye. His doctor diagnosed a sinus issue and told him he should feel better in a few days. A week later, he felt worse. He consulted his sister, a nurse, who encouraged him to visit an asthma specialist. That doctor was concerned about a possible blockage and sent him to a specialist

at West Houston Medical Center. The results confirmed the blockage and a biopsy was immediately performed. The diagnosis: Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. From there, it was a whirlwind of fullbody testing for further affected areas, and visits with doctors at MD Anderson. The news got worse. Castaño was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer, Stage 4, below his eye and on his forehead. He was alone when he received the news. “You would think I would have immediately called my family when I got the diagnosis,” Castaño explained, “but I didn’t. Instead, I went directly to the church, right up to the altar, and I cried. I surrendered my heart to God. The doctor had told me there was a chance I would lose all my

teeth and my ability to speak. I told God, ‘If you want me to continue speaking, my mouth is yours.’” His treatment was to begin immediately, but Castaño asked for three weeks to fulfill his preaching obligations on Channel 21’s Vision Celestial. In doing so, he was reminded of what he had preached all his life: If he had to go through the fire, he would give God the glory. With that peace of mind, he announced his diagnosis to his church and asked them to pray with him. He stressed to his congregants that while it was okay to be shocked and sad, as he had been, he did not want any sadness or worry to overcome them. “Here is where we actually prove whether we really believe in God in times of trouble,” he told church members. “I’m asking for prayer, but I’m asking for normalcy in doing God’s work. Don’t let this bring a negative spirit or doubts into your mind.” The church members heeded his message and offered support and ongoing prayer as Castaño began his first cycle of treatments. To his church, the only obvious change was his loss of hair. Castaño was determined to not quit. During the course of his treatments, he didn’t miss a single service. He preached four services a week, relying on the strength of God to get him through. After just 9 weeks of treatment and only a third of the way through his plan, he was tested. All of the cancer - every trace of it - was gone.

It was a miracle, and Castaño was elated. In his eyes, God had cured him and there was no need to continue with further treatments. The doctor disagreed, urging him to take the extra precaution. “At that moment, God spoke to me through the Scripture, specifically 2 Kings 13:17, when the prophet told the king of Israel to shoot the arrows. The king hit the ground only 3 times, but if he had hit it 5 or more times, the enemy wouldn’t come back.” Even though Castaño did not want to continue his treatment, he felt the direct word of the Lord telling him to finish going through the fire. So he did, and 11 years later, he remains cancer free. No one comes out of a miracle story unchanged. Castraño feels that he is much more adept at ministering to others through tragedy and loss. “Anyone who is going through the impossible, the overwhelming, the uncomfortable crisis in life, if they keep their eyes on the greatness of their God, not the greatness

of their situation, they will see a breakthrough. The God in the Bible will become real to them in their own environment and life. In a time of no answers or hope, they will receive what they cannot find by other means. “I’m so thankful He gave me an extension of time and I want to use it to serve him better. I thought the biggest thing was building a new sanctuary. I didn’t realize he had bigger plans. I’m so grateful to be his servant.” The thing about miracles is that you never see them coming. And when they arrive, you’re so grateful - so surprised that you were spared a tragedy - that you might be tempted to grab ahold and not question how the miracle came about. Castaño’s story reminds us that all the praise goes to God.

From Swarming Bees to Spreading the Gospel By Caitlin Richards Psalm 118 became a meaningful verse for Vern and Mary Roberts on Thursday, September 12, 2018. It was a normal day of yard work for the Roberts. Mary was removing poison ivy from their backyard and Vern started mowing their grass. “They came out of nowhere,” Vern said. “We had been on vacation so the grass was taller than usual. I made three passes and then all of the sudden I felt something hitting my head.” Vern realized the thumps on his head were in fact Africanized Honey Bees swarming him. In an instant, he was in the middle of a cloud of bees. The bees engulfed him and Vern fell to the ground several times while trying to get help. “At one point, I laid down to die,” Vern said. “They had completely overcome me. I lay down and thought this is my last moment. This is where I am going to die. I started thinking about all of the things I had promised I was going to do and missions I committed to. I decided somebody else would have to take my place in those things because this was my last day.” During that moment though, Vern said a voice in his whole body spoke to him saying, ‘you can’t let her (Mary) find you here.’ He then got up and started fighting again. He rememContinued on page 22

bered thinking he wasn’t going to die anymore even though just a few moments before he thought his life was over. Vern finally got to where Mary was and tried to communicate to her to get the water hose. She could barley understand Vern because he had bees in his mouth and down his throat. Mary recalled thinking he looked like a man who was dying with a sweater of bees covering his body.

After a failed attempt to deter the bees with the water hose, Mary ran inside the house to call 911. She then came back out to help Vern into the house to prevent even more bees from swarming him. Thankfully, Mary was only stung 42 times while trying to help Vern. However, Mary still had a terrible reaction because she is allergic.

Help finally arrived, but the paramedics and firefighters were unable to get to their home because of the swarming bees. Vern ended up walking back through the bees to get to the ambulance. The paramedics had to fight off the bees as they struggled to keep him alive. Firemen had to dress in full gear to get Mary to the ambulance. With her allergy, she had to be taken to the ambulance while in a sleeping bag to protect her from the bees. The Roberts were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy to be treated. Once in the emergency room, four nurses worked to pull the stingers from Vern’s body. They said they pulled out 600 stingers, which took about an hour and a half. They estimated another 100 stingers came out when they removed Vern’s jeans. Vern was treated in the intensive care unit for three days before being sent home. Psalm 118 speaks of thanksgiving for victory. The Psalm vividly comes to life for the Roberts in verses 12-14 when it states “they surrounded me likes bees,” and “they pushed me hard to make me fall, but the Lord helped me.” Since their incident with the bees, the Roberts have endured hardship while they heal physically and mentally. However, their faith has helped them get through and they still consider themselves victorious despite their hardship. “It is amazing how you can feel when thousands of people are praying for you at the same time,” Vern said. “There were hundreds of thousands of people praying for me by name.” From their church to the ministries they serve, the Roberts were lifted up in prayer and have been loved with acts of kindness like meals and monetary donations. Despite their hardship, the Roberts want their story to spread the message that God rescues.

“I think God is calling us out as a couple to speak out on His behalf,” Mary said. “Sort of like a public service announcement about bees, but even more so to share the message that God rescues.” The Roberts’ story has caught the attention of several news outlets. Through each interview, the Roberts have spoke about their faith and shared the message about how God rescues. “It has cemented more trust in my faith,” Vern said. “My faith was strong before, but I have always been one who wanted to show my faith by my actions instead of my words. Now, I am being called to use my words to share more about my faith because of what has happened.” The Roberts were sharing the message of the Gospel long before their bee incident though. They have been active in numerous ministries. However, the ministry they have been most active with recently is the Kairos Prison Ministry. Their bee incident and message of God rescues has been especially meaningful for them to share with the inmates at the Huntsville Correctional Prison Unit. “None of this is about us,” Mary said. “It is not for our own glory. It is only for God. It is always about God’s glory. He wants us to only brag on Him. Only God is good.” To help Mary and Vern during this trying time, visit www.gofundme.com/help-vern-and-mary-Roberts. Mary and Vern also operate a small business Katy Kitchen and Bath. They would love to visit with you about how they can help you get the most out of your home. Contact Mary at marykatykitchen@gmail.com for more information.

My Son Has Worn a Path to Me By Jordan Harrell Every morning, I roll over to find a tiny body lying between my husband and me. Sometimes I remember how he got there. Sometimes it’s as if he magically appeared. But you can count on my three-yearold to climb into our bed, wiggle over my body, and scoot himself under the covers at some point during the night. Some nights when I’ve just laid my head down, before I’ve even begun thinking of all the things I need to do the next day (or the things I forgot to do that day), I hear the swishing of his pajama pants across the tile floor occasionally accompanied by a crash or two into a wall as he makes his way to us in a stupor. He pushes the door open, his eyes cracked like he’s been punched in the face, his bedhead on point, and whispers, “I’m sca-yed. Can I way wiv you?” And because I’m putty in his hands, and because I’m too tired to care, I help him up and over and under the quilt. I know it’s just gotten to be a habit, and I know all the good moms out there would tell me I need to break it before it gets out of hand (#toolatebro). But he’s my last one. And there’s something about him knowing that when he’s scared, he knows exactly where to go to feel safe. I was thinking about it one night, while he lie next to me. He had just crawled in, yet was already asleep. It was as if he was never really awake at all. He knows that path well now, the one from his room to ours, because in the not-so-scary daylight he’s walked it over and over again. He’s worn a path to our room because he’s come here often. Not always because he needed something, but just because he loves to be

near us. But it hasn’t always been that way. When we first moved to this house last year, he would just cry in his room until we came to him (which always took a little longer because #mamastired and #dadddyhasselectivehearing). He wasn’t comfortable with the layout of the house yet, hadn’t raced screaming through the halls a million times yet. It was uncharted territory. So he didn’t know the way. But now, he does. So at night, when he needs us, he follows that beaten path to our room. He knows all the turns, all the walls, all the furniture he needs to avoid. Continued on page 26

Even in the dark. Even when his eyes are half-open. Even when his brain is still snoozing away. It’s muscle memory. His feet just take him where they know he needs to be because he’s been there a thousand times before. It’s the place his little feet associate with security and comfort. I wonder if I have worn a path to my Heavenly Father like he has to us. Do I go to him often enough in the daytime, in the still, quiet, joyful moments, for my feet to blindly lead me there in the darkness? Or would I have a hard time finding him when I needed him because I hadn’t visited in a while? Of course God will meet us in our darkness. Of course he’ll be there, waiting for us. He’s longing to hold us and carry us and lead us. But if we haven’t worn down that road to him, if we haven’t walked it day in and day out, we might have a harder time getting there. We might run into a few walls, stub our toes on a few door frames, hit our head against a lamp or two, before our weary bodies finally collapse into his waiting arms. I thought of all the times I’d neglected to walk that path to just spend time with my Father. How I’d waited until I needed him, until circumstances turned desperate and out of con-

But the good news is we serve a God who sees us stuck in the corner banging our head against the wall in our lostness and throws down everything, turns his back on whatever he’s doing, and sprints to us. Discovering Your Child’s Love Language By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein “I don’t understand it. I’ve raised both my kids the same way, and they’ve turned out completely different!” I’ve heard this exasperated claim many times. Have you said it yourself? I remember reading all the parenting books and columns I could get my hands on while raising my son and daughter. I wanted to understand why I got one result when I applied a parenting principle to my son and a completely different result with my daughter. After all, they were raised in the same household, same parents, same rules, same religious foundation, same everything. What was I missing? One very big factor: They are two entirely different people. Their personalities, perspectives, choices, passions, strengths, weaknesses all different. Yet I was treating them the same, thinking “same” was a synonym for “fair.” It isn’t. Being fair is being judicious, with consistent rules and consequences. Your son shouldn’t get to stay out later than your daughter. Your daughter shouldn’t do more chores than your son. And discipline for one shouldn’t be more extreme than the other. But with different personalities, values and interests, your children shouldn’t be treated the same, any more than you treat all your friends or family members the exact same way. As adults, we’ve recognized that other adults respond differently to statements, actions,

and expressions of love. We adapt our behavior and expectations accordingly. Look at marriage. Is your spouse just like you? I’ve been married almost 31 years and I’m here to tell you, my husband and I are very different people. Yet we cohabitate peacefully, resolve differences quickly, and enjoy each other’s company. And we have a deep love for one another that hasn’t faded. But how does that translate to our relationship to our children? Well, think about the Love Languages, Dr. Gary Chapman’s philosophy about how to relate to those who aren’t like us. He says that everyone has a Love Language, a way that they are most receptive to love, leading to cooperation and returned affection. Just as adults have love languages, children do too. And knowing their love language is tantamount to some of the best parenting principles out there. The five Love Languages - Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Gift Giving, and Acts of Service - represent how a person sees and feels love. For children of all ages, it looks like this: 1. Physical Touch - Hugs and kisses, sitting in close proximity, wrestling, back scratches, placing your hand on your child’s when talking, high-fiving, and snuggling all help these kids feel your love.

While these same actions with another child can cause discomfort or embarrassment, the child who craves physical touch will count on it as a way to view your love. 2. Words of Affirmation - You will know this is your child’s love language when their motivation and satisfaction grow as a result of verbal praise and recognition. These kids need to hear “I love you” and need you to tell them you’re proud of them. But be careful! They will quickly recognize false praise, as they are attuned to words

and tone. Likewise, negative words cut to the core. So be sincere in your dialog and solve disputes through calm discussion, and they will respond! 3. Quality Time - While all of us need human interaction and crave acceptance from others, kids who fall in this category base their view of relationships primarily on the amount and quality of time you spend with them. As you can imagine, these kids struggle when the two most important people in their lives are constantly at work or busy with other endeavors. It’s not that you need to be with them all the time, it’s that when you are, it needs to be about them, not about your phone, other people, or any other distractions. When they speak, look them directly in the eyes and give them your full attention. Make them feel that when you’re together, it’s only about the two of you. 4. Giving gifts - These kids are thoughtful. It brings them joy to make others happy through gift giving. They put time and effort into their gifts because to them, giving to others is a true sign of love. In return, they gauge others’ love for them by the same measure. But don’t mistake expensive for valuable. What they are looking for is an understanding of who they are, what they like, and what brings them happiness. This can include homemade gifts, cookies baked just for them, or a handwritten card expressing your pride in their accomplishment. 5. Acts of Service - No, these children do not expect you to be their servant, but they will feel the most loved when you serve them in a different way. Hosting their friends at your house; doing something when they ask you to do it, not in your own time; and making them feel valued by treating them respectfully, are all ways you can perform acts of service. Again, price is not a factor here. Stopping for a milkshake just because your daughter craves one is a small act that will bring big love rewards.

Figuring out who your children are and what makes them tick is the first step in knowing how to speak to them in the language that they appreciate. When that happens, the fact that your children are different will be a blessing rather than a curse. Santa’s Exchange Gives the Gift of Christmas Joy to Children in Fort Bend County By Rick Bell What will Santa bring me this year? Children everywhere ask themselves that question as they lay in bed on Christmas Eve. The anticipation of waking up and finding toys under the Christmas tree creates excitement and joy in every child. But what if there were no toys? How do children feel on Christmas Eve when their family cannot afford to buy toys? That is a grim reality for many children. Surprisingly, many families living right here in Fort Bend County do not have the resources to provide a gift for their children. “The thought of a child not getting a Christmas gift breaks my heart.” said Rick Bell who chairs the Santa’s Exchange committee. “Santa’s Exchange is an effort of many charitable organizations and individuals seeking to provide Christmas to families in need. It is a combined effort of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Toys for Tots, Rotary Club of Sugar Land, Exchange Club of Fort Bend, and Carolyn Tarver. These organizations raise money and collect toys to provide Christmas presents to children that would not otherwise receive one. Last year, nearly 5,000 children in Fort Bend received at least three presents each from the Santa’s Exchange event.” Each school in Fort Bend ISD participates in the event, along with many local businesses and hospitals. Last year, most of the

schools in Lamar Consolidated also agreed to help. Participating in the event is a great what to teach students and children to have a heart for others and experience the joy of giving. At last year’s event, nearly 1,000 volunteers helped make sure the event ran smoothly. There is a lot of work leading up to the event. Toys are collected, sorted and tagged according to their value. When the families arrive, the children are escorted to see Santa and play games. While the children are playing, the parents select three toys for each of their children with the assistance of a volunteer elf. It is very similar to shopping at a local store. After the parents complete their shopping, the gifts are bagged and they are reunited with their children. It is a wonderful event that brings smiles to many children on Christmas morning. If you would like to help, please consider dropping a toy at any Sugar Land Fire Station, or any local school participating in the Santa’s Exchange event. If we continue to combine our resources and volunteering together, we can assure every child in our county will go to be wondering “What will Santa bring me this year?” If you would like to participate in any way or get more information about the event, please feel free to email santa@ecsl.org.

Dear Doctor: Why Do I Have Swelling in My Legs? By Dr. George V. Golod Dear Doctor: I have neurosarcoidosis and taking steroids bund close monitoring. Dear Patient: There are numerous causes for your legs to swell; some dangerous and some quite benign. Like any other symptom people experience, it needs to be addressed in context of other signs, symptoms and history. I will discuss several “red flag” scenarios that deem urgent medical attention. 1. Unilateral swelling with or without redness or pain, especially with the following risk factors: a. Recent travel b. Recent surgery c. Smoking d. Use of birth control or hormone replacement therapy e. Known or suspected history of cancer. This may be a simple soft tissue/skin infection; however, medical professionals need to rule out a clot in the veins of the lower extremity (DVT – deep venous throm-

Sometimes DVTs are “unprovoked” by medications, surgery or travel and may be due to an underlying condition which would prompt further testing.

bus) which can lead to a life-threatening condition known as a pulmonary embolus (when the clot dislodges from the leg and travels to the vessels in the lungs preventing oxygenation of blood). As mentioned, this may look like an infection – which is treated with antibiotics; however, a DVT is not an infection and requires anticoagulation (thinning of the blood) to prevent progression of the clot.

2. Bilateral swelling (swollen legs and puffiness in both feet): a. Pregnancy: water retention in extremities is frequently physiologic and expected; however, it is critical to have routine prenatal care and follow up because conditions such as preeclampsia can present with swelling. b. Venous stasis: gravity forces blood to pool in people who stand or sit for extended periods of time– this is a benign cause but needs to be evaluated. c. Malnutrition: blood is more than just red blood cells – there are proteins (namely Albumin) that function by keeping a fluid equilibrium – malnutrition zaps our protein levels and fluid leaks out of our vessels and thanks to gravity pools in the most dependent part of our body (our legs). d. Liver failure: our liver is responsible for making a lot of proteins (like albumin) and cirrhosis of the liver can lead to increase water retention and swelling. e. Heart failure: Your heart is designed to pump blood all over the body – if the pump is malfunctioning (or “failing”), fluid backs up upstream from the heart causing swelling in the legs and in the lungs. This needs to be addressed promptly.

Please pray for my son, Michael, in Katy. He’s a recovering addict and is currently at a Christian rehab. He struggles with mental illness and is unable to get the medication he needs. It seems like the enemy is attacking him on all fronts. Please pray for him to find a mentor, receive medication, and be emotionally healed. I ask for prayers for the students at my martial arts school, United Tae Kwon Do. Specifically, I ask for wisdom, direction, and the opportunity to use my gifts and talents to glorify my Father and Messiah. Angeline of Katy requests prayers for spiritual clarity and strengthening regarding future charity projects and community service. Her calling is clear, but the what, when, how and whom is not. Please pray for Andrea S. of Katy. Her house caught on fire over Thanksgiving and now has to be repaired for the second time this year after Harvey. Please pray for a speedy restoration of their property during the holidays, so her family can spend time together in their home. Please pray for my grandfather, Vinny D. of Katy. He just turned 90 and is having health complications. He may need a major surgery in December and we’re worried that he might not make it to Christmas. I’ve lost 3 grandparents this year and I would hate to lose him too. Prayers for health and prosperity would be greatly appreciated.
