WELCOME

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Most importantly for us, guest satisfaction has reached record levels

“The fort is stronger than the storm.” This pun encapsulates the events of last year, where we at Forte Village successfully weathered the tempests of our initial fears that Brexit and sanctions against Russia would undermine the season. Instead, here we are celebrating record numbers for Forte Village – not just exponential growth compared with the previous year, but most importantly for us, record levels of satisfaction among our guests. You have once again put us on an international pedestal and celebrated us as an icon of Italian hospitality around the world. In the last issue of Uniq, I told you we wanted to exceed your expectations and beat the historic record season of the previous year. Did we succeed? Well, despite the uncertainty caused by those monumental international events, we can now say that yes, we certainly did succeed! To coin a phrase, we have gathered what we have sown in these past few years of renewal and change, during which my staff and I have worked hard to refine Forte Village in every respect. To satisfy the every need of our customers, we have positioned ourselves more and more at the top end of the market, focusing on elegance and luxury, as well as providing a wide choice of facilities and services. We are all really proud of the results, which keep driving us on. In this issue of Uniq, you will find lots of exciting developments for summer 2018 to read about, but there is one area in particular that I want to highlight: Forte Village has once again pushed the boundaries of hospitality – literally in this case, by spreading its wings up the road to Cagliari. Faithful to our constant commitment to the island, we are strengthening even further our already tight bond with Sardinia in the shape of our innovative luxury hotel project located in downtown Cagliari. Read our chat with the architect Sandro Sergi inside this issue of Uniq to discover more about the hotel – he reveals how the project was born from the desire to help increase tourism in one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. The project, like the city, is a thing of true beauty. Enjoy reading this issue!

SPA

WELCOME TO OUR

GARDEN OF EDEN Where better to rebalance mind, body and soul than here in the hands of a world-leading Ayurveda expert

D

eep within the most tranquil and secluded part of Forte Village, guests seeking physical and mental rebalancing can learn all about Ayurveda, one of the most ancient and compelling holistic treatments. In 2018, Dr Ulrich Bauhofer, one of the most renowned Ayurvedic experts outside India, becomes the spa’s latest practitioner. Sardinia, with its mild sunny climate, offers the ideal conditions to let your mind wander and leave everyday life behind. Our exclusive Aquaforte clinic boasts the world’s only “Thalassotherapy course” – six pools filled with seawater of different levels of salt that allow you to regain your balance.

26

Complementing this exceptional innovation, Dr Bauhofer is now here to help heal stressed souls. The key, he says, is energy. Due to the constant availability of our “batteries”, our energy levels decrease as the batteries gradually empty and eventually need recharging. “We have to learn to manage not only our time, but also our energy,” he says.

SHAKE THE DISEASE

Dr Bauhofer explains that as doctors only deal with pathology and disease, they know almost nothing about health - at least from their formal education. Ayurveda is the oldest medicine of humanity and means “the knowledge of life” and health in the first place.

fortevillage.com

SPA

Our immune system plays a vital role in staying healthy. Viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites and degenerate cells attack it non-stop and thrive when the system is out of joint. Stress has a decisive influence. Pharmaceutical products can offer short-term relief but the root cause stubbornly remains in our bodies and we can – and often do easily get ill again. Dr Bauhofer leads stress-plagued people to effective energy management. He combines the healing knowledge of Ayurveda, which is thousands of years old, with the demands and requirements of living today. Stress reduction, exercise, proper nutrition and regular detoxification of the organism are important pillars for a life in balance. At the Forte Village you can learn how to apply this wisdom to yourself under the calming guidance of Dr Bauhofer.

fortevillage.com

Much of what he says will seem plausible or even familiar. When the great seers and sages, the rishis and maharishis, studied the principles of Ayurveda thousands of years ago in their deep meditations, they saw only the laws of nature that have governed man, nature and the cosmos since time immemorial. They called it the “Veda” – pure knowledge, the silent intelligence of nature, which mysteriously maintains order in the universe.

FEEL THE RHYTHM

The core messages are the teaching of the three doshas, the ayurvedic diet, and how to harness biological rhythms for happiness and success. Learn also about the effects of herbs, sounds and precious stones, and their healing potential. Dr Bauhofer’s teachings, once learnt, can be applied at any time in any place.

We have to learn to manage not only our time, but also our energy

VEGETARIAN HEAVEN Berliners can’t get enough of its haute vegetarian cuisine. Now Cookies Cream is coming to Forte Village

Vegetarian food does not always have to be regional, seasonal or ‘healthy’, the only criteria is taste

30

” fortevillage.com

FOOD

C

ookies Cream is currently the hottest veggie restaurant in the heart of Berlin. The man pulling the apron strings is Berlin club operator Heinz Gindullis, known as “Cookie”, who first realised his vision of a vegetarian restaurant above his Friedrichstraße night club 10 years ago. To find the place, you disappear down an unlikely looking alley on the corner of Unter den Linden, next to the Komische Opera. You come to a shabby door and press an intercom buzzer to gain entry. Amazed, you enter a restaurant with tall, white concrete walls that exude old industrial charms. In an air of “shabby chic”, you are invited to sit on cosy red benches and watch the chefs at work.

A MATTER OF TASTE

Cookie owes much of its success to its head chef, Stefan Hentschel (pictured, right), who happened to be in the right place at the right time, bringing in his cooking skills. The veggie menu seems greatly at odds with the ambience of the restaurant and indeed for the chef, the idea of working here was contrary to his passion and talent for cooking based on meat dishes. Here he would have to cook completely without meat. But Hentschel met this challenge and now he creates vegetarian menus at the highest level. Hentschel follows his own philosophy: vegetarian food does not always have to be made from regional products that match the season and

fortevillage.com

have the reputation of being “healthy”. On the contrary: if you want to conjure up interesting dishes, you have to look beyond the horizon in the vegetarian kitchen and the only criteria is taste. And his success proves him right. Even many non-vegetarians greatly enjoy his food. Hentschel refrains from using modern cooking aids associated with veggie restaurants such as the Pacojet (an appliance that micro-purées frozen foods into ultra-fine textures without thawing). He cooks in the grand old tradition of using a gas stove and grill to create dishes such as baked aubergine with corn purée. Its crunchy crust and drizzled red wine jus mean diners are hard pressed to realise that there is no meat on the plate.

STAR QUALITY

The menu is rounded off with a fine champagne and wine list that guarantees a perfect evening. Stars such as George Clooney and Robbie Williams have been to Cookies Cream, and will be back. Cookies Cream, with its fresh cuisine that tastes of summer and sea, is the perfect fit for Forte Village. When Cookie first came to see the resort, his reaction was immediate: “It was clear to me from the first second that I should spoil the guests with my kitchen. The mesmerising spirit and magic of this incredible resort immediately convinced me to set up here.” From May 2018 you can find Cookie on the sunny island.

Blanch three times, always in fresh water. 7. Clean and cover the mussels. Let them open in a steam oven at 92°C for 4 minutes, then extract from the shells. Stuff the mussels with the tomato cream. 8. Blend in the ricotta, cream and salt, bringing the mixture to 70°C. Pour into a siphon - enough to load a couple cans.

TO SERVE

Arrange the cereals and extra virgin oil marinade on the bottom of the dish. Add a few pieces of lemon, black olives and stuffed mussels. Cover with ricotta mousse and a sprinkling of chilli pepper. Garnish with the sprouts of parsley and floregano.

NIGHTLIFE

THE ALOHA SPIRIT If you like pina coladas but don’t care for rain, Mahiki is the place to be. Here’s why you should come on down for some floral fun in the sun

W

hen Piers Adams was asked to set up a Sardinian outpost of his Mahiki club at Forte Village, he didn’t hesitate to take up the offer. As a long-time guest at the resort, he knew only too well that his Polynesian-style brand of floral fun would be a perfect fit for the resort. “It was an honour to be asked,” says Piers. “This is without doubt the best family resort in the world. Everything about it has always been excellent – the attention to detail is immaculate.” The resort’s family-orientated vibe might have seemed an odd fit for Mahiki, the Tiki-style club renowned for being a hedonist’s hangout in London, However, Piers always felt that Mahiki’s laid-back ethos was, like sunscreen and swimming shorts, made for Forte Village. “My desire to set up here stemmed from seeing that innate Italian way of creating the perfect environment in which to eat or socialise. Plus, the fact that at Forte Village everyone mixes regardless of background or nationality.” Fronting onto the beach and with one side opening out onto the resort’s Castello pool, Mahiki is perfectly located

fortevillage.com

for families to enjoy a relaxing, informal lunch or drink during the day. Such was the success last year that Piers has expanded both the size of the venue and the menu. In addition to club sandwiches and the like, Mahiki now has an extensive sushi offering at lunch time. Evenings are more for adults and tend to be more about having a drink, after dinner. Does the atmosphere ever get rowdy? “Absolutely not,” replies Piers. “As a family resort, it’s very civilised.”

GOING WITH THE FLOW

Water is a major part of Polynesian culture and undoubtedly sets the calming tone for the Sardinian venue’s friendly vibe. “There’s nothing better than enjoying a nice cold cocktail as the Sardinian sun sets over the watery horizon,” enthuses Piers, although the spectacular night sky takes some beating, too, when seemingly countless stars twinkle on a pitch-black canvas. Music of course plays its part and Piers is particularly proud of the way the DJs at Mahiki are sensitive to the needs of the guests: “By day and night, we’re creating the Aloha vibe, so in the daytime we spin old-time favourites by

the likes of Elvis and Sinatra. The energy picks up in the evening but it never gets so loud that guests have to shout – plus, of course, there may be others guests trying to sleep not so far away.” There isn’t a dance floor as such, but there is room for guests to get up and have a bit of a jig if they hear something that gets them going. It’s this informality that encapsulates the spirit of Mahiki, helped in no small part by the genuine Fijian furniture, hand-crafted decor plus the odd rum-based cocktail or two. But the most important element, says Piers, is that when you go out to Mahiki you aren’t intimidated. “We provide the stage for you to have fun and escape.”

“I AM AT THE SERVICE OF BEAUTY” Ermanno Scervino likes to dress the most gorgeous women in the world. He tells us what inspires him – and why his label is so popular

D

raw the dress a moment before the woman wants it.” This is the phrase that sums up the style of designer Ermanno Scervino. From Cher’s character in Franco Zeffirelli’s Tea with Mussolini to the young metropolitan elites of today, Scervino’s style shows the lightness and elegance of a man who has always been “in love with beauty”. His designs have international appeal but are closely linked to Florence, the city that Ermanno and his CEO Toni Scervino chose as their base in 2007 for the traditional values of its tailoring.

ERMANNO SCERVINO – HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR INTEREST ALIVE AND CREATE NEW DESIRES?

Every item of each collection is the result of a complex process, made from at least five months of continuous experimentation. I have always believed in the value of tailoring and I think that an excellent product can only be obtained by using skilled, expert hands, who can recognise the fabrics, test the consistency, and then know how to combine them with needle and thread. This is the great strength of our “Made

44

in Italy” tag. At the same time, however, crafted work should not be a nostalgic operation. I love creating contemporary and seductive clothes, designed for today’s women – a couture conceived for the everyday, in which the sartorial tradition and meticulous attention to detail are enhanced by the most innovative and experimental workings and materials. I believe this continuous attention to the contemporary keeps the interest of my customers alive.

DOESN’T YOUR USE OF HIGH-END MATERIALS MAKE IT HARDER TO SELL THE LABEL? WHERE IS YOUR BIGGEST MARKET?

Our raw materials and processes are appreciated precisely for their quality, which makes them unique and inimitable. In China, for example, our brand is classified as an elite luxury, because it is impossible to reproduce and counterfeit. Our strongest markets are Italy, Europe in general, Russia and southeast Asia. E-commerce sales have grown a lot in the past year – around 40 per cent – and that, surprisingly maybe, includes couture dresses as well as accessories. This testifies to the

enormous appreciation that customers have for our “Made in Tuscany” products.

YOU LOVE BRINGING TOGETHER OPPOSITES, MIXING DISTANT STYLES

It’s true. I have had, since the very beginning, the idea of uniting and combining elements belonging to different worlds to create a new harmony, a style that could enhance feminine beauty. This is what I did, for example, with my couture duvets, the garment that marked my initial success: until then, they had to be exclusively warm and functional; I added glamour, making them beautiful and feminine. This element is certainly present in my latest collection: for example oversized bomber jackets worn over impalpable petticoats.

HOW MUCH DO INFLUENCERS COUNT? IS THERE A FAMOUS CHARACTER YOU WOULD LIKE OR WOULD HAVE LIKED TO DRESS?

They are undoubtedly important. The image of a dress worn by celebrities goes around the world in a few minutes, and this is very useful to convey my stylistic idea in all countries and to all my clients. Behind it all, however, there must still

fortevillage.com

FASHION

be the substance. If I could go back in time, I’d dress the great divas of Italian cinema. Their influence on my style has been important and still lasts.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?

It varies: I can be impressed by a film, a book or even, having the privilege of living and working in a city rich in art like Florence, by the lines of a sculpture or the hues of windows. Transposing ideas into materials, colours and shapes is the complex part.

IS THERE A DRESS CREATED FOR A PARTICULAR OCCASION OR WOMAN THAT HAS REMAINED IN YOUR HEART AND IF SO, WHY?

It’s like asking a father which child he prefers. I am tied to all my creations, and I have always offered them to a celebrity only when I am fully satisfied. Of course, recently I really liked the dress worn by Amal Clooney for her arrival at the Venice Film Festival. I find that a bustier giving way to a base of tulle fully enhances her femininity and her elegant and refined sensuality. But I have had the fortune and the privilege of dressing many women, both

fortevillage.com

beautiful and with a strong personality: Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez, Rita Ora, Alessandra Ambrosio. They are all women who have impressed me because they are contemporary, independent and they love being feminine and having an international style.

IT SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE A LOVE AFFAIR WITH LACE. WHAT IS IT ABOUT LACE THAT YOU LOVE SO MUCH?

It has the capacity to exalt, in a refined and never vulgar way, the femininity and sensuality of women. Lace is a complicated fabric, delicate and difficult to work. But it is able to give to those who master it incredible results, almost endless possibilities for processing. I, who have always defined myself as a worker at the service of female beauty, can only love this material that allows me to offer women the most elegant and precious clothes.

IS THE PETTICOAT DRESS THE MUSTHAVE OF YOUR NEW COLLECTION?

Absolutely yes. The collection is a real tribute to the petticoat. I was inspired by the timeless sensuality of Elizabeth

Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to rethink this iconic piece as being no longer just for the intimacy of the home, but to show it off and make it ideal for any occasion. When made with superimposed lace and embellished with crystals, the petticoat becomes a most precious and enchanting full evening dress.

YOU RECENTLY ANNOUNCED YOU WANTED TO LAUNCH YOUR FIRST FRAGRANCE. WHY – AND WHY NOW? It is an idea I have had for some time, but it needed the right partner with which to implement it. Mavive, an Italian company that shares our deep values of craftsmanship, attention to detail and high quality production, finally seemed the perfect choice.

DO YOU HAVE A STYLE TIP, BEYOND WHAT’S IN FASHION DURING THE CURRENT SEASONS, THAT WOULD ENABLE ALL WOMEN TO ALWAYS LOOK AT THEIR BEST?

The important thing is to choose clothes that enhance not only your physicality, but also your personality. By Luciano Tancredi

Sardinia, where life has more taste. CIPNES present the promotional and internationalization program named “INSULA Longevity World”. Sardinia, the island of longevity at the centre of the Mediterranean sea, combines strong cultural traditions and culinary uniqueness, that are firmly tied to the geography of the region and its natural products. Our island is one of the five world areas, called “Blue Zones”, with the highest concentration of centenarians. Together with the island of Okinawa we have the highest ratio of citizens to centenarians: 22 every 100.000 inhabitants, against a world average of 8 every 100.000 inhabitants. Several studies point out how the longevity of the Sardinian population is related to a perfect balance of different factors, such as the quality of the environment and lifestyle, genetic factors, low population density, and a diet rich in genuine foods with important nutritional properties (e.g. sheep and goats cheese rich in anti-cancer and anti-cholesterol CLA fatty-acids; Cannonau wine, rich in polyphenols with high antioxidant properties; dairy products, rich in lactobacillus and live probiotics and sourdough bread rich in aromas and with a low glycemic index, etc...). Furthermore, Sardinia is a famously exclusive tourist destination, surrounded by nature and unique landscapes, rich in biodiversity, history and millenary traditions, while also being a land of great food and wine culture, productive know-how and high quality products. It is exactly those attributes that CIPNES has decided to showcase to the world. CIPNES is a territorial public institution in Sardinia that, through its Agrifood and territorial Marketing Division, is promoting the development and the international promotion of Sardinian quality production chains through the internationalization program called “Sardinia Longevity World”, with focus on the agrifood and craftsmanship products, that encompass the partecipation of the Business Network “Sardinia Longevity Food” and the Sardinia master craftsmen network. In order to support the internationalization program CIPNES is finalizing the territorial marketing platform called “INSULA EXPO”, dedicated to the promotion of Sardinia's production chains and territorial districts, that represents a permanent bridge between Sardinian products and international potential markets. From this year forward, the high quality production chains of Sardinia (agrifood and artistic crafts) will also be present at Forte Village, in the Showroom INSULA and in the typical INSULA Enogastronomic corner within the Pineta restaurant.

MEET THE

IRONMAN Alex Zanardi is a true inspiration. The ex-F1 star lost his legs but not his lust for life. He tells us what drives him on

I

t is September 15 2001. Alex Zanardi races in Formula CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams AKA Champ Car). His time in Formula 1, with Jordan, Minardi, Lotus and Williams, has just ended. The circuit is Lausitzring, in Germany. Alex starts in 22nd place but, one car at a time, he surpasses everyone. Now he is in first place. It’s the perfect race. But then at the final pitstop, at the exit from the pits, the car of another Alex, Tagliani, arrives and hits Zanardi’s Reynard Honda, breaking it in two. Rushed to hospital, Zanardi is dying. With only one litre of blood in his body, he is given the last rites. Then a miracle, which even today doctors cannot explain: Alex survives. His legs are amputated, but he survives. And on that day, his second life began. Alex became Ironman Alex.

TRIATHLON

After successes in motoring and paracycling, including multiple gold medals at the Paralympic Games in London 2012 and Rio 2016, and eight titles at the World Road Championships, “Ironman Alex” dedicated himself to achieving glory in the ultimate challenge for any athlete – the ironman triathlon. And at the Forte Village Challenge Sardinia, in October 2017, Alex arrived having set a triathlon record just a few days earlier in Barcelona, where he became the first disabled cyclist to do a “subniner” in an official Ironman race with a time of 8 hours, 58 minutes and 59 seconds. The stuff of legend.

ALEX – WILL IRONMAN BE YOUR ONLY ACTIVITY IN THE FUTURE?

A friend told me: “Life has more imagination than us.” I think it’s true. Today I do many things and in the future I will return to motor racing, taking part in the 2019 Daytona 24 Hours, at the wheel of a BMW M8 GTE.

HOW ARE YOU PREPARING FOR THIS MOTORING EVENT?

AND, BESIDES ALL THIS SPORT, YOU HOSTED A SHOW ON ITALIAN TV. WAS IT YET ANOTHER CHALLENGE OR DID IT COME EASY?

It is not false modesty but in all honesty, I must confess that I am not professionally qualified to be at the helm of that fantastic TV show [Challenger]. If I managed to impress those who watched, it was only thanks to my passion for sport as I could tell the stories of great athletes in whom I recognised and saw the same common denominator: passion. This is what made my eyes light up and made me exalt, so I could transmit to the viewers something that went well beyond simple words in telling those wonderful stories.

LET’S RETURN TO THE TRIATHLON. THE “SUBNINE” IS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT BUT IS IT ENOUGH?

ARE YOU STILL CYCLING?

It should be enough, but since I know I can do better, I will try to beat my record. I am proud to be the first disabled person in the world to finish the course in under nine hours. I like to make the impossible happen, to subvert the predictions and expectations. I worked hard to achieve that goal: I knew I could do it and, considering the route of the Barcelona Ironman was particularly difficult because of the dirt road and the many narrow roads, I am convinced I can improve on the time.

YOU ARE 51, BUT STILL WIN MEDALS. HOW LONG CAN YOU CONTINUE TO DO SPORT AT A COMPETITIVE LEVEL?

AT THE LAST FORTE VILLAGE CHALLENGE SARDINIA (HALF-DISTANCE IRONMAN) YOU TOOK 54TH PLACE OVERALL, WITH A TIME OF 4HR, 52MIN AND 8SEC. CROSSING THE FINISHING LINE, YOU RECEIVED A HUGE OVATION FROM THE CROWD. WHAT DID YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT TAKING PART IN THIS COMPETITION?

This season will be devoted largely to development with BMW. I am returning to a project partly carried out in 2015 when I participated in the 24 hours at Spa in Belgium, which became “23 hours” because one hour from the end the engine broke down. On the back of that experience, we are beginning to understand how to be more effective.

Yes, I will continue with para-cycling, starting at the World Championships in Maniago, Italy, from August 2 to 5. The preparation will also increase my body’s resistance levels, ready for the next Ironman competitions.

Whether I succeed or not is of course relevant, but to try is the exciting part – to push myself to the limit.

I still feel like a kid! To be serious, I know I am of a certain age but in fact, I believe it has got easier to build winning performances over long distances. For example, in Ironman, where strength and endurance are critical, use of the mind is just as important.

IS THE IMPORTANT THING TO PARTICIPATE OR WIN?

The important thing is to try to win.

fortevillage.com

It is a very difficult route. It is certainly not the ideal race for a disabled athlete who wants to do well in the rankings, since pushing the wheelchair uphill is exceptionally tiring. But it was a fantastic race, in a beautiful place that’s full of charm, with the resort and the natural scenery that surrounds it. I felt happy and certainly if they are kind enough to invite me to take part in the next one, I am ready to return.

It is our duty to take whatever happens to us and turn it into an opportunity

YOU OFTEN APPEAR IN SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS AND INSTRUCT KIDS. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE A GOOD TEACHER?

No, I teach only what I have learnt. When I asked my dad how I could become a Formula 1 driver, he told me: “Try to acquire the tools of the trade. I know that when you study maths and literature, you do not feel close to the realisation of your dreams, but since this is what you do today, do it with passion and curiosity and learn those things that will come in handy.” The journey to London 2012, for example, started the day that I woke up in hospital in Berlin because it was this positive attitude that allowed me to get back to work, curious to see what this strange new life had in store for me. In the end it became my biggest opportunity. It is our duty to take whatever happens to us and turn it into an opportunity. I succeeded. In the beginning, it was a matter of trying to satisfy myself in every single little thing. Eventually, I devoted myself to things that I wanted to do, and everything was much easier: when you are given a BMW M6 to drive with 600 horsepower, well life certainly becomes much more fun! By Luciano Tancredi The Forte Village Challenge Triathlon will take place from the 27-28 October 2018, for more information visit fortevillagetriathlon.com.

GOLD RUSH Olympic medalists Jonny and Alistair Brownlee tell us about being trilathletes and competing as brothers

PHOTO CREDITS: @TIZIANO BALLABIO AND @ACTIV’IMAGES-JE

T

hey are the kings of Triathlon: Alistair, Olympic champion in 2012 and 2016, and the first person to win the Triathlon world titles in all three categories (Elite, Under 23 and Junior); and Jonathan, his younger brother by two years, won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and bronze at London 2012. But Jonathan and Alistair are first and foremost brothers – at the Rio Olympics they famously crossed the line holding hands. Then there was the 2016 World Series in Cozumel, Mexico. Just 100m from the finish, Jonathan was in first place, victory within easy reach, when heat stroke kicked in and he staggered dramatically. He was discombobulated and about to fall to the ground, when from behind came his brother who gave up the gold to support him and steer him to the finish line. Their podium thrilled the world. Last October, the Brownlees were here to participate in the Forte Village Challenge Sardinia.

ALISTAIR AND JONATHAN, HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU CROSSED THE FINISH LINE TOGETHER AT COZUMEL IN 2016?

Jonathan: That’s an easy one for me, nothing ! I don’t remember a thing. Alistair: A whole mixture of emotions but relief was one of the biggest – that I had got him to the finish line and he could get the medical attention he needed. My decision to help him was an instant one. Hopefully, I won’t be in the same position again!

fortevillage.com

WHAT STANDS OUT AS THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREERS?

A: Winning two Olympic golds. To win the first one with the crowds in London was incredible and then back it up in Rio was just amazing. J: I agree. Olympic success definitely, but I have goals I still want to achieve. I am very proud that my job is also my hobby and I get to travel the world.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE TRIATHLON?

J: We were young and it was a sport to have a go at. Alistair did it first but we were swimming and running at school, and cycling to school, so it was logical. A: The variety of training was important, it allowed us to focus on different sports at different times of the year. And then a bit of success motivates you to keep training and keep improving, so you get better and better. Then after university, we were able to train full-time.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU TRAIN

what we do and we put the hard work in. A: With me racing middle distance this year, I did a lot more work on my TT bike in preparation. But like I said, you have to put the hours in beforehand.

DO YOU ALWAYS FOLLOW THE SAME RITUAL BEFORE IMPORTANT RACES?

J: I like all my kit laid out the night before, I eat the same things, etc, so yes. A: I’m a bit more relaxed. I have a warmup routine but other than that, not really.

CHALLENGE FORTE VILLAGE WAS YOUR FIRST ITALIAN RACE. HOW WAS IT? J: The atmosphere was super friendly and the venue was fantastic. A: We only did the swim leg, but we got out on bikes later and the course looked challenging. It looked a good course. The Forte Village Challenge Triathlon will take place from the 27-28 October 2018, for more information visit fortevillagetriathlon.com.

J: We train for 35 hours a week. Seven hours swimming, 18-20 hours cycling, 8-10 hours running and two hours gym, depending on the time of year. We don’t swim at the weekend. We run twice a day three times a week and bike every day. A: Triathlon is an endurance sport, so building aerobic efficiency is key, which means you have to put the hours in!

HOW DO YOU PREPARE TO COMPETE IN SUCH PRESTIGIOUS CHALLENGES?

J: We take a lot of confidence from standing on the start line, knowing we have prepared the best we can. We enjoy

CALL OF THE

CAPITAL In the heart of Cagliari, Forte Village is turning a grand old palazzo into the Sardinian capital’s first five-star hotel, complete with a courtyard PHOTO ROBERTO MAGGIONI

CAGLIARI

R

ising from within its prestigious location at the heart of Cagliari’s historic centre, the Palazzo Doglio is being transformed into the Sardinian capital’s most luxurious hotel. The majestic building, which is situated between Via Logudoro and Via Goceano, is being given a new lease of life. Guests at what will be Cagliari’s first five-star hotel will experience exquisitely refined elegance, with the Palazzo destined to become an emblem of excellence for the prestigious Italian luxury hotel industry. The pride of an ambitious urban redevelopment project, the Palazzo will cut a highly distinctive dash in the heart of the city thanks to innovative architectural solutions, highly evocative colours and a style that subtly fuses the comfort of extreme luxury with the charms of tradition. The retention and enhancement of the local stone exterior is critical, as is the use of colours and scents characteristic of the Mediterranean scrub – these will inform the building’s look and feel. “The hotel will be set in a broader, more ambitious project that involves the construction of common areas and amenities of the highest level,” explains architect Sandro Sergi, who is responsible for the concept.

The Palazzo will cut a highly distinctive dash in the heart of the city thanks to innovative architectural solutions and highly evocative colours

fortevillage.com

59

SANDRO SERGI – ARCHITECTURE IS SAID TO BE THE CONNECTING ELEMENT BETWEEN CREATIVE AND TECHNICAL ART. HOW MUCH CREATIVITY IS EXPRESSED IN THIS PROJECT? The greatest degree of creativity here is in the concept of the court and in the colours of the façades, but I cannot reveal more. In general, we did not want to distort the existing building but wished to maintain the authentic spirit of the historic building. The redevelopment and conversion of the building will take place in compliance with its original design, in keeping with the architectural and cultural context of the city centre.

DOES THAT MEAN THAT IN TERMS OF MATERIALS YOU WILL BE CAREFUL NOT TO ALTER THE EXISTING ONES?

Cagliari was built with volcanic rock. We certainly cannot deviate from using the stones of the Sardinian architectural tradition and we will revive the palazzo sensitively, adopting innovative techniques that will give the façade a very suggestive brightness.

WHAT STANDS OUT ABOUT THE PALAZZO PROJECT?

The whole complex will be characterised by an elegant internal courtyard. We want to enhance this architectural element of refined mediation between interior and exterior space to give an exclusive connotation to the entire building.

HOW DO YOU IMAGINE YOUR COURT?

It will be our flagship, the fulcrum from which three general areas will develop: the commercial area, with activities mainly focused on gourmet food but not exclusively; an important art gallery and a prestigious jewellery store. All three areas will be available to all guests of the complex. The hotel area will consist of

a wonderful hall, a refined lounge bar, rooms and suites, most of which will face the court. And then there will be the area dedicated to hotel services, including an exclusive spa and fitness area, which will be accessible to hotel guests. The rest of the court will have a green soul.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY GREEN SOUL?

The courtyard will be immersed in the beauty and sensory suggestions that only the flora of the Mediterranean scrub can offer. Guests will stay in the city centre but will be immersed in Sardinian vegetation, where the air smells of myrtle and rosemary.

YOU ARE ALSO ONE OF THE FORTE VILLAGE ARCHITECTS. WHAT WILL BE THE SIMILARITIES WITH THE RESORT AND WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES?

At Forte Village, we have always combined luxury, exclusivity and elegance – elements that fuse to make the resort the best family resort in the world – albeit interpreted in various ways but always following the same core values. For this complex we want to focus more on the sense of being a “citizen” as we are in the centre of Cagliari where we will appeal to a different user – in particular, business clientele. Therefore, the central idea of luxury, exclusivity and elegance will still hold true, but these elements will be combined in a different way, placing the concept of comfort at the centre.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE?

In a globalised world, the future of Italian architecture will be that of knowing how to differentiate, enhancing the peculiarities, characteristics and culture of the territory. In an increasingly homogenised world, where “archistars” design according to the same canons in both Rome and New York, the future of architecture can only be to enhance the peculiarities while respecting the diversity of the places where the work is realised.

I greatly admire his work, the ways in which he approaches the work, the fact that he does not like to repeat himself. Piano has the ability to know how to adapt to places: it is difficult to find two of his projects that are similar.

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

We are working on a further restructuring that will make the Forte Village even more appealing. It is a constant work that has lasted for years but I cannot reveal anything except that we will once again amaze our guest by increasing, if possible, the level of excellence of the resort.

H Lawrence wrote that “Sardinia is out of time and history” and with good reason - reasons that have endured over the centuries. From Chia to Stintino and from Castiadas to Bosa, the bright, aromatic atmosphere left Lawrence quivering, desperate to explore its wild, natural places or at the very least, wanting to return to see more of the island’s coves, beaches, valleys, hills, caves and lagoons. Yes, it’s a land of sun, but Sardinia offers so much more and visitors, like Lawrence, are drawn here by an unrivalled combination of factors. And 11 months of glorious Mediterranean weather makes it ideal for holidays and trips to the coasts and inland. Sardinia offers endless suprises.

The unique quality of the Sardinian land and the people who inhabit it have something very much in common. In terms of appearance, the people, like the land, have strong features and seem hard to approach. But, at the same time, the locals are loyal and generous, ready to break down barriers as soon as a conversation sparks into life. Guarded they may be but with time, Sardinians become friends for life. Such sentiments have been written and said many times throughout history. Nowadays, Sardinians must overcome their shyness and interact with tourists who seek and rightly expect a warm welcome and help in finding intriguing places. After all, they are here to relax with their families. The island offers novelties and traditions to suit any pocket. There are 25,000 hectares of land and 2,400km of coastline – a priceless gift. From the north to the south and from the west to the east, there are countless natural delights. Visitors can enjoy being carried away on a tide of unforgettable sights – not just of nature but also art and crafts, history and culture, schools of carpet

making, cork production, ceramics and goldsmithery. Then there are food and wine festivals and sporting activities, with facilities for experts and beginners, events, some major international ones, including sailing, triathlon, basketball, football and horse riding. It is a cocktail of holiday delights that at Forte Village combine with the most sophisticated and innovative levels of relaxation and pampering in the world. Led by Lorenzo Giannuzzi, the team at the international award-winning resort always keeps Forte Village at the forefront of resort luxury, delivering the ultimate in leisure and entertainment, season after season. With the fantastic spa, the academies, fine-dining prepared by some of the world’s best chefs, entertainment from big names of pop and classical music and West End musicals, Forte Village never fails its guests. Here, in a land of magic, the starry paradise next to the beach called Santa Margherita di Pula is an oasis that offers the same thrill and quiver that shook DH Lawrence, artist and writer, in the land of timeless beauty.

Places to see NORA, CAPITAL OF BEAUTY

This ancient city, founded by the Phoenicians, was later Punic and Roman. Nora sits on the promontory of Cape Pula, west of Cagliari on the southern coast of Sardinia. A nuragic well, thermal spa, Mycenaean and nuraghe artefacts, a necropolis and a stele of the 8th century BC are all jewels of the site. Also worth seeing are the remains of a sacrificial site and the foundations of a sacred structure dedicated to the goddess Tanit and the god Asclepius. Nora was a city that thrived in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, partly due to contact with ancient Rome.

CAGLIARI, THE CITY OF THE SUN Whichever way you look in Cagliari there is life. Set between wetlands and the sea, hilly and ancient, Cagliari is full of vitality, even at night with a lively music and entertainment scene. Cagliari is this and more. Founded approximately in the 15th century BC, the regional capital has been inhabited

since Neolithic times. The bountiful resources of the sea, the ponds and the surrounding Campidanese plain provided sustenance for the pre-nuragic population. The ancient city of Karalis, with 154,000 inhabitants, was the capital of a wider metropolitan area comprising 17 municipalities and 431,000 residents. With a university and an archbishop, this centre with a 1,000-year history was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Sardinia. It boasts an international port and is surrounded by the water of Santa Gilla lagoon and Molentargius pond. It is an oasis with hundreds of protected species. Cagliari is the city of flamingos, parks, gardens and beaches, such as Calamosca beach, Giorgino beach and the wonderful Poetto beach, with its 9km of sugary sand – the longest metropolitan beach in Europe. There are countless monuments and prestigious sites: the royal palace, the cathedral, the incredible Elephant and San Pancrazio towers, the neoclassical Bastion of Saint Remy, the Roman amphitheatre and the necropolis of Tuvixeddu. One thing is for sure, Cagliari will grab you.

Cagliari THE NECROPOLIS OF MONTESSU A pre-nuragic archaeological area that for its fans remains breathtaking and full of surprises. The necropolis of Montessu, in the municipality of Villaperuccio in southern Sardinia, is located in a large natural amphitheatre and has about 40 domus de janas (multichambered tombs). It is considered one of the largest and most important in Sardinia. Dating to the 3rd millennium BC, the funeral site was used for 1,000 years. On the top of the domus there are spirals and inside them are fascinating concentric symbols and carvings of bull horns.

Mount Meana, a massif of dolomite rocks dating back 530 million years. The caves were discovered in 1971. The constant internal temperature is 16°C, with a humidity close to 100 per cent. Over a distance of 500m, you can admire imposing concretions, stalactites and stalagmites, columns, stalactites in tubular formations, cannulas and even rare needle-like aragonites, concentrated in a single room and known by cavers as “cave flowers”: white crystal tufts that develop in spectacular threadlike formations. Another curiosity is in the initial part of the cavity where you can see the skeletal remains of Prolagus sardus, an animal similar to the hare, present only in Sardinia and Corsica. It became extinct 400 years ago.

The island extends for around 51 square kilometres (it is the sixth largest Italian island) and has just 6,500 inhabitants, concentrated in Carloforte, the only place of human habitation. San Pietro is a glimpse of nature that dazzles. Discover Mediterranean vegetation, cliffs, pink flamingos and tuna: between 15 May and 15 June, along the coasts of the islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro, the “tonnata alla tonnara” takes place, a traditional, exciting collective fishing of bluefin tuna.

Barumini

The dolmen conceals the remains of one of the most evocative nuragic villages MASUA, DIVINE SCENERY

From the abandoned mines to the dazzling splendour of the sugar loaf stack, Masua is a former mining town that rises 95m above sea level. It is part of the municipality of Iglesias and has 100 residents. Now it offers beaches and a sea to dream of in contrast to the harbour of Porto Flavia in the town of Buggerru (known as “Little Paris” during its heyday), where the minerals were loaded onto boats. Characterised by small houses arranged in a fan shape, it stands over the outlet to the sea. Coves you should seek out include Portixeddu, Is Compingius, San Nicola, Nido dell’Aquila and Cala Domestica.

BARUMINI AND THE GIARA, NAVEL OF THE WORLD

The village of Su Nuraxi in Barumini is a human settlement dating to the nuragic age (16-14th century BC). It lies in the heart of Sardinia on the warm and fertile Campidano plain. The structures of the nuraghe are special, as is the atmosphere of the complex. The site was classified by Unesco as a World Heritage Site in 1997. Take the opportunity to visit the nearby Giara di Gesturi. A basalt plateau of about 4,400 hectares at 550m above sea level, it is the habitat of the last wild horses of Europe. La Giara formed about two million years ago and is full of spectacular environments with unique inhabitants: two small crustaceans considered real living fossils

68

– the Lepidurus apus and the Triops cancriformis – whose genetic make-up has remained unchanged for around five million years. The eggs of these arthropods, laid in summer, hatch with the first spring rains.

SANTA CRISTINA, A GLIMPSE OF THE SACRED WELL

Located near the Carlo Felice northsouth arterial road, the archaeologicalwilderness Paulilatino Park includes a nuragic sanctuary and the rural church of Santa Cristina. The site consists of two parts: the well temple of the nuragic age, with a meeting hut, a fence and other smaller huts. The second part consists of a single-tower nuraghe, some elongated stone huts of uncertain date and a nuragic village, which is still to be excavated. Nearby are several giants’ tombs. An unusual part of Sardinia and an obligatory stop.

ORGOSOL0, MURALS AND DIGNITY

With a history of spectacular natural landscapes, traditions and customs of great charm, Orgosolo, a municipality in the province of Nuoro, contains mysteries and ancient rites. Dotted with numerous fine churches, the centre is an open-air museum. Fascinating murals betray the story of continuing violence that dominated the town. Birthplace of a young martyr called Antonia Mesina, proclaimed blessed by Pope

John Paul II in 1987, the land around Orgosolo is littered with archaeological sites, nuraghe, Domus de janas and country churches. In the Supramonte mountains, an area of about 3,500 hectares, is the spectacular Gorropu gorge, a deep depression created by the Rio Flumineddu with 400m-tall vertical walls. Frequented by hikers and trekking enthusiasts from around the world, the gorge is an indelible postcard of a breathtaking region (see also below).

MAMOIADA AND SA LOSE PINTÀ

Just under 3,000 inhabitants live at 644m above sea level in the Barbagia of Ollolai. Mamoiada offers a variety of impressive archaeological and anthropological sights: from votive healing stones to menhirs and dolmens. Most striking is Sa Perda Pintà: “the painted stone”, known as Stele di Boeli, a 270cm-high slab engraved with concentric circles and cups, similar in design to plates spread in the Celtic area, from Scotland to Brittany. Mamoiada is known for its carnival of ancestral origins, with mysterious masked characters, whose origin is all but unknown, called Mamuthones and Issohadores, who are the symbol of the countryside. Every January 17, on the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot ,you can witness this dance of people in disturbing black and white masks decked with cowbells.

GORROPU, THE MOST FAMOUS CANYON IN EUROPE

An international destination for extreme climbing enthusiasts, the Gorrupu-Tiscali Gorge is called by environmentalists “a planet in its own right”. Reachable only from equally unsurpassable places of natural beauty, such as Cala Gonone and Baunei, it offers thrilling sensations. The path climbs into a picturesque rift between imposing limestone cliffs, whose summit dominates the entire valley of Oddoene. But this is only the appetiser: the path continues inside the limestone gorge of Doloverre, in a dense holm oak forest to the eastern side of Mount Tiscali, whose summit is nothing but an enormous dolmen that conceals the remains of one of the most evocative and important nuragic villages on the island. Truly, a sight not to be missed.

COMMUNICATING THE WORLD ADM Media Consulting is strengthening its presence in China and is aiming at Russia, to expand its foreign markets

S

wiss company ADM Media Consulting is a leader in the organisation of large-scale events on behalf of the most important banking, pharmaceutical, industrial and sporting groups in the world. It has had record turnover in the past few years and now aims to further strengthen its presence in strategic Asian markets, as well as enter the Russian market. The result of founder and CEO Alexandro De Martino’s 20 years’ experience in television broadcast and media, ADM’s ambitious new challenge is a satellite company based in Shanghai that will boost its offering where “the economy moves faster” and the greatest business opportunities are concentrated.

ADM HAS A PRESENCE ALL OVER THE WORLD, FROM SOUTH AMERICA TO THE UNITED STATES TO AUSTRALIA. WHY REDOUBLE EFFORTS IN CHINA?

Mainly to accommodate the requests of hundreds of our European and American customers working in China who require

our professionalism to organise events throughout Asia. But these days, many of our customers are Asian – in particular, Chinese. After several years working with us, they have learned to appreciate our precision and professionalism, and recognise our high levels of excellence. Hence, our idea to found a satellite company that will be based in Shanghai where we will employ also Chinese staff, for obvious opportunities related to cultural factors.

WHY CHINA? From Beijing to Shanghai,

from Nanjing to Hangzho, cities are swarming with communication. People need to connect and they do so through events, which is why the market is so dynamic. Ours is therefore not only a business opportunity but also a desire to give concrete solutions to the needs of the population and a society that increasingly wants to communicate through high-level events.

WHAT IMPORTANT PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON? We were chosen

by the Chinese Basketball Association to produce the multimedia content for all their games, for both traditional and modern platforms. For example, we will produce content for all social media chat platforms, such as WeChat, which is the main way in China to connect the physical and the digital worlds. A hybrid of WhatsApp and Facebook, its monthly reach has now passed 500 million active users, which is more than two-thirds of all WhatsApp users worldwide.

HOW FAST-PACED IS THE RUSSIAN MARKET? The Russian economy is

already recovering and will grow again. It will be unaffected – and may even be boosted – by the important events the country is expecting soon, including the Football World Cup. The market is really hot. Russia is very modern and well developed at an infrastructural level. The main cities are vibrant and we see a need for very high standards in all commercial sectors and services. We are ready for this new ambitious challenge.

INTERVIEW

My name is a guarantee to our clients of our commitment

ARE YOUR EFFORTS FOCUSED PURELY ON THE EAST? Not exclusively. We

certainly can’t forget Switzerland, the main engine of our business. But every day, we work all over the world for the most prestigious organisations, such as American Express and Credit Suisse. We organise more than 1,000 events each year – even during this interview, I received a request to organise a big event in Melbourne. We take care of the preparation of theatres, conference centres, hotels and exhibition centres by using cutting-edge technology and professionalism of the highest degree.

HOW MUCH PLANNING IS INVOLVED?

Our attention to detail is an essential quality. From staging to lighting, from cameras to web streaming, we always aim for excellence. We boast the best project managers in the sector, who ‘pamper’ our customers, while the graphics and video department show in real-time what we are going to achieve,

fortevillage.com

using renderings that simulate exactly how events will be realised.

YOUR COMPANY HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON EMPLOYMENT. HOW MANY MEMBERS OF STAFF DO YOU HAVE? In just under four years, we

created a network of activities related to our company involving over 10,000 people. It is a huge, heterogeneous sea of professionals with expertise in organising events, ranging from project managers to graphic engineers, from light designers to backliners, from runners to porters. We give work to dozens of small local companies throughout the year – these are companies we have selected in strict compliance with the highest standards of quality.

FINALLY, WHY THE NAME ADM MEDIA CONSULTING? They are my initials

guarantees our clients our commitment, abnegation, precision and results. I started working during the Italy ’90 Fottball World Championships when I was 15 years old, helping to put in TV cables during football matches. During school terms, at weekends, I worked on the broadcast of TV sports channels. I contributed to the production of the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics. As a producer, I have been involved in all Olympic editions, managing to combine the efficiency of television with the effective production of the events. I have gained a comprehensive international experience in production, which I will put at the disposal of ADM as we face new challenges to reach our ambitious goals. here’s an old saying: “Those who can, do, those who can’t, teach.” But at Forte Village resort, those who can, do, and they teach. When you come to Forte Village, you don’t just get the chance to use world-class sports and leisure facilities, you can also take advantage of an amazing array of academies with coaching from world-class stars. As Angelo Giannuzzi, the resort’s Director of Service and Leisure, says “Our academies offer guests a chance to try something new or they can enjoy their favourite activity with coaching of the highest level and with the highest quality facilities.”

STARS IN THEIR EYES

Over the past few years, Forte Village has spared no expense in developing the resort’s Sports Academy Centre, with courses and classes tailored to the needs of adults and kids of all levels and abilities. Not content to rest on its laurels, however, this year sees the introduction of a new academy in field hockey with British Olympic gold medal winners Kate and Helen RichardsonWalsh among the star coaches. “Experience doesn’t get much better than the Richardson-Walshes,” enthuses Angelo. They are both Olympic Gold medal winners, while Kate was capped a record 375 times for her country and was the England and Great Britain Captain for 13 years. There will also be new stars coming to teach in some of the existing academies such as Tracey Neville, former pro netball player (and sister of ex-footballers Gary and Phil), and a Swedish Olympic champion in table tennis. Of course, stars such as the Richardson-Walshes and rugby legends Martin Johnson, Austin Healey and

Connor O’Shea are in high-demand and some activities are inevitably more popular than others. Angelo advises booking early but adds, “If the classes are fully booked we can usually arrange private lessons and vice versa so that nobody ends up disappointed.” He also explains that academies run from Monday to Friday and guest stars typically stay for one week at a time.

And the academies aren’t just for physically demanding activities. Chess and table tennis are among the less strenuous ones, whilst the Go-Kart academy is great fun for petrol-heads, who won’t want to miss the chance to drive one of the all-new karts for 2018, under supervision from the likes of Paolo Gagliardini, former 125-class Italian and European champion. SPLASH DOWN! Endless fun for kids

F

lopping down to soak up the beautiful Sardinian sun features highly on the list of favourite resort “activities” for mums and dads – whether it’s on a lounger at one of Forte Village’s fabulous pools or on the sands of the pristine beach, enjoying a spectacular view of the gorgeous blue sea. But kids, as we all know, tend to have boundless reserves of energy, enthusiasm and curiosity so Forte Village goes out of its way to make sure everyone gets what they want on holiday. For youngsters, that includes the chance to be coached by world-class

78

sports stars at our sporting academies. Plus, we have Kids’ Wonderland – an amazing children’s playground.

IN THE SWIM

Ask any kid what they love most about being on holiday and the chances are that the word water will feature strongly in their reply – after all, when the sun’s out, children take to water like a duck to, erm, water. Of course, there is no shortage of places for kids to swim safely under the sun at Forte Village – children who prefer to splash about in the sea can take part in our supervised beach

programme with lots of fun activities – but our new Acquapark located at Baia della Palme looks set to be one of the biggest hits of the year with the little ones. All ages have been catered for – there are slides for cascading down and plummeting into the crystal-clear water, and just for toddlers and younger kids who aren’t quite ready to hit the slides there is a wonderful new splash pool.

AN OASIS OF FUN

Children of all ages are sure to be enchanted by Mario and Bridget, our colourful parrots, while there’s also an incredible array of activities to keep them occupied. At Mario’s Village, they can play and be creative with a wide range of art, theatre and writing workshops, while at our ecologicallyfocused Wonderlab, they can use ceramics, origami and Velcro to create objects made from recycled materials. At the end of the day, the kids themselves can put on a show in the wonderful setting of Piazza Luisa. Our highly trained staff will organise unforgettable shows for kids with all kinds of dancing.
