E

ver wish for a great place to hang out with family and friends—a place with good  food, indoor and outdoor recreation and free fun all in one area?

You can find it at Lewis Main in the Army Family Covenant Complex, JBLM’s newest family recreation commons. The recreation commons encompasses ballparks for youth and adult sports, a splash park and playground,

grassy picnic area, bowling center with a snack bar, arena with an indoor skating rink, Battle Bean café, Leisure Travel Services and Giant Campus classroom, and the MWR Tent that accommodates large Family & MWR, Family Readiness Group and Unit events and parties.

“Families can use this entire area as a one-stop place for fun,” says Janet Foster, Bowl Arena Lanes manager. “We just want families and Soldiers to have fun, because sometimes they don’t get a chance,” says Charissa Lizama, AFC Arena facility manager.

Everyone can have fun bowling

and reserve private areas for parties and workshops. If children haven’t had a chance to bowl during the school year, families can sign up in June for adult-junior summer leagues. Summer leagues provide adults and youth time to kick back and enjoy having fun together.

Bowl Arena Lanes boasts 40 lanes with state-of-the-art equipment and bumpers on request in each lane; an open-concept snack bar and eating area with ample seating accommodates wheelchairs and strollers. Groups can purchase party packages

Units and FRGs can rent the MWR tent for parties holding up to 700 in the 14,000 sq. ft. tent. Contact Bowl Arena Lanes for rental details. Restrooms are located just outside in the splash park.

Save big with Leisure Travel Services

Leisure Travel Services, located in AFC Arena, brings you the best discounts possible on vacations, cruises, getaways and theme parks, plus event tickets and tourist attractions. “Business has really taken off since we moved into AFC Arena,” says Mickey Peebles, Leisure Travel Services director. “There’s more room for customers and higher visibility. “We can give discounts that no one else here can on airlines, vacations, resorts and cruises. Anyone that holds a valid ID card can get in on the specials while they last, on a first-come, first-served basis. “I always say, ‘if you can find

a better deal, go for it.’ We’re here to save you money, not take it away from you. And if we don’t know the answer to your inquiry, we’ll get back to you after we find the answer.” With three staff members and a manager, Peebles says LTS provides service to the entire Western region, not just Joint Base Lewis-McChord. According to Peebles, any margin of profit LTS makes goes directly back into MWR programs. To better serve customers that cannot readily come into LTS, such as McChord Field patrons, e-tickets are available to purchase through LTS and print out at Adventures Unlimited at McChord Field.

AFC Arena hosts variety AFC Arena’s a great place to buy breakfast or lunch and hang out with friends or moms, have a meeting, bring your laptop for free Wi-Fi, lounge in a glassenclosed comfort room or by a fireplace, or just to come and watch skaters. Battle Bean coffee bar and grill operates weekdays inside the arena, and a snack bar is open on weekends (except DONSA days and holidays). “We have healthy lunch options, such as freshly made salads, soups, deli sandwiches, and made-to-order grilled pannini sandwiches,” says Tina Pickren, AFC Arena Battle Bean manager. “Our prices are comparable and often less expensive than the fast-food chains. We even offer coupons.” Battle Bean offers also coffee specialities, hot and cold beverages and breakfast items, as well as Battle Bean travel mugs, Battle Bean Joe dolls and bags of freshly roasted Battle Bean coffee beans. “Come in for the breakfast combo and get free drip coffee refills all day,” Pickren says.

The skating rink is popular for its lunchtime skates from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. weekdays, plus other skate times for teens, adults, and tots and strollers. “We often play movies, music videos or games on the giant screens inside the rink,” says Lizama. “We might play family movies while families are here. Teens like the XBox, PlayStation and other video games, and adults like the music videos.”

area with the package. Giant Campus hosts labs, camps, workshops and drop-in clinics in the computer classroom inside AFC Arena. During April, high school students can sign up and take job readiness courses Monday or Tuesday nights; and anyone can drop in Fridays to get advice on how to use software programs. Giant Campus also builds custom courses for units and FRGs who want to use the classroom. For JBLM Giant Campus classes and registration, visit giantcampus.com/jblm or call 253-880-6975. The computer classroom also can be scheduled for meetings through the skate office right inside the front door.

Free outdoor fun The children’s splash park and playground with a soft “fall zone” are fully wheelchair-accessible, including the restrooms, and are safe for even the youngest children. A shaded patio and benches provide places to bring out food from the skate arena or bowling center to eat. Restrooms, a changing area and outdoor shower make playtime even better. The playground swingset accommodates physically disabled youngsters. The splash park is open daily through the summer from 8:30 a.m. until dusk.

Active Parenting of Teens

Valuable parenting resources Learn from the experts at Parent University By Jeanne Morrow, Family Advocacy Program McChord Field

Most parents would agree that being a parent is the most joyful piece of their lives. We get to watch our children take their first wobbly steps, climb proudly on a school bus for the first time and play a flamingo in the school play. We get messy, puddingfaced kisses, the warmth of a sleeping infant in our arms and a million other moments to treasure. Most parents would also agree that our wonderful, loving little ones have another side to them. Children can whine, throw temper tantrums and test and manipulate even the savviest of parents. At times we may feel as if we have no answers for how to handle our own children, and military families have additional stressors—long deployments and separations. Deployment and reintegration challenges the ability to parent cohesively and consistently. Parent University is an opportunity for JBLM parents to learn new skills for spending quality time with their children and learn to deal with common problematic behaviors. It’s a day to celebrate our decision to be parents but also to equip ourselves with new skills for making sure we set our children on a healthy and safe path to adulthood. The event is designed to make us aware of services available to us as parents, and help us bond over shared parenting experiences.

Parent University is Friday, April 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the North Fort Chapel at Lewis North. Join guest speaker Matthew Johnson, PsyD, MSW, author of “Positive Parenting with a Plan.” Lunch will be provided at the event, and free childcare will be available with early registration. This event will provide not only the valuable information from Dr. Johnson but also a range of vendors that provide services to children and parents in our community. To register, call 253-967-5901 or 253-982-2695.

The world of the 21st century is tough on teenagers. First and foremost, it’s a dangerous place to grow up, and teens and parents are struggling with the issues of drugs, sexuality and violence while working toward building courage and positive self-esteem. The difference between successful families and those that seem to endlessly struggle is not the presence or absence of problems but that some families are better at solving their problems, learning from the experience and moving on. The same is true for teenagers. Active Parenting of Teens is a facilitator-led, video-based, interactive learning experience that teaches parents a comprehensive model for parenting teens and preteens. The course is organized around the concepts of problem solving, building a cooperative relationship, fostering responsibility and discipline. Best of all, it’s fun! The course consists of six two-hour sessions and may also be scheduled for your unit or FRG. For more information, call 253-968-6819.

Building self-esteem in your military child By Rosie Anderson, JBLM New Parent Support Program (Army Community Service)

t’s important to recognize that strong and stable families help support the military mission. One way to strengthen your family is to work at building your child’s self-esteem from a very early age. There are many things you can do as a parent—you’re probably already doing many without making a conscious effort!—throughout the day that may enhance your military child’s self-esteem. Here are 10 tips for JBLM families:

Caring for military children April is also Child Abuse Prevention month. The New Parent Support Program celebrates military children and works to help prevent child abuse. Offering home visitation services to military families, the programs help teach parents:

Visit the award-winning

• How to respond to infant cues and soothe a fussy baby • Child development information • Techniques for toddler discipline and toilet training Home visitation—giving parents an understanding of child development, helping them set realistic expectations and improving the child safety of the homes—is highly effective at decreasing child abuse and neglect. In addition to home visitation, NPSP offers educational groups: • Common Sense Parenting • Infant Massage and Play Morning • 1,2,3 Magic and Stress-free Parenting • 24/7 Dad and Dr. Dad To sign up for a home visit or parenting class, call 253-967-7409.

ual attention. Not only will they feel loved but valued as a person as well.

Teach your child to deal with failure. Help your child learn that failure is just a temporary setback and they can move on and be successful. Self-esteem can be improved and it can be rewarding to watch as your child grows more confident. Increasing your awareness and doing small things each day to help your child gain self-esteem can lead to significant positive changes. The above information is available during home visits; excerpted from Dr. Thomas Yarnell and more-selfesteem.com.

Learning & earning

Financial education begins at home By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor

As parents we try to ensure our children are prepared for life once they leave home. It’s important for children to grow up understanding how finances work. Understanding finances means more than just adding

28

and subtracting numbers. Financial literacy includes budgeting, balancing a checking account, spending less than you make, saving and investing. Educating your children about money will help reduce the financial mistakes they’ll make and increase their

chances of success. Everyday experiences offer great opportunities to teach children about money. By giving children household responsibilities that are tied to allowances they begin to understand the link between income and working. Encourage them to save a set portion of their allowance for specific items, such as a new bike or game. If they’re young, consider putting this money in a jar with a picture of the item they want on the front. In this world of instant gratification, it’s important to teach children about working for and paying for their needs and wants. This helps build financial patience and develops their financial planning skills. When your child or teenager wants something, discuss with them how this item fits into the household budget. Explain that a budget is a money map that helps you reach your financial goals. Stress the value of financial responsibility and living within their means. Technology eases the challenges of teaching children and teenagers about money. Hundreds of free resources are available at sites such as jumpstart.org, saveandinvest.org, financialworkshopkits. org, smartaboutmoney.org and cashcourse.org. These are just a few of the financial tools available to parents to help train the upcoming generation. Army Community Service offers a variety of financial education classes for parents and teenagers. For a current list of classes, call 253-967-7166 or visit the JBLM MWR calendar at JLBMmwr.com.
