This month, Joint Base LewisMcChord celebrates military children, volunteers and libraries. MWR is hosting a variety of events to honor our servicemembers’ children – Kids’ Fest is on Thursday, April 1 at the American Lake Community Center and there are always fun activities available with Child, Youth and School Services. There will be ice cream socials and free bowling to celebrate volunteers (see page 7) and open house events at libraries on Wednesday, April 14 (see page 18). Earth Day celebration plus garden show Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation and Public Works have teamed up to bring you the first-ever Planet Green Thumb Saturday, April 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the American Lake Community Center. Designed as a combination Earth Day celebration and Garden Show, the event features vendors, exhibits, guest speakers, door prizes and more. Public Works will kick off the new community garden project, with garden plots available for residents or groups.The event and activities are free, and home and garden products will be available for purchase. “This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, and this is a good year to celebrate our community’s environmental accomplishments,” said Kate Laverents, MWR Special Events Director. “Public Works and the Garrison have been working hard to improve our environmental footprint. We were one of the first installations to implement a sustainability program, and we have won awards from the state for our environmental record,” she said. The event will have plants, garden tools, garden art vendors and garden-related exhibits on site, as well as on-stage presentations by Kimi Shintaku at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Ed Hume at 12:30 p.m., Ciscoe Morris at 1:30 p.m. and South Sound Solar at 3:30 p.m. Meet with Ruby Reuseable, a local artist and educator, and learn about sustainable living at a variety of booths. Take the Airfield Challenge!

The Family Airfield Challenge is a 4.3-mile race starting at Soldiers Field House, Building 3236 on JBLM-Lewis Main on Saturday, April 24. The course is one lap around the airfield. The early registration deadline is Wednesday, April 14, and the late registration deadline is Wednesday, April 21. Entry fees are $5 for active duty military, retirees and their family members; $10 for DoD

civilian ID cardholders; and $15 for non-DoD civilians. For registration completed after Wednesday, April 14, add $10 to prices listed. Pre-race packet pick-up begins at 7:30 a.m. at Soldiers Field House, and the gun will sound at 9 a.m. Each runner will receive a free T-shirt. Medals will be awarded to the top male and female runners in each age categories (15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+). This is the second of the three-part series of exercises that you can do at home with minimal equipment. Give them a try to help strengthen and tone your body and reduce your risk for injury. Please note, you should consult your doctor before beginning an exercise regimen. Fitness assessments can be completed at the gym with a certified fitness trainer. Step 2

The plank is an amazing exercise that activates the entire musculature of the trunk and is helpful in preventing lower back injuries. Using a towel can be a fun way to increase the intensity of your abdominal workout. Use a smooth floor and two similar towels. Step one: Move into a plank position with a towel under each foot or elbow. Be sure your back is super flat by rolling your hips slightly forward. Race-day packet pick-up is from 5:30 to 6:15 a.m., and the first 200 participants to pick up their race packets on race day will receive a free race T-shirt. Coffey developed an appreciation for the military while serving in the Navy.While earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Central Michigan University, she led a variety of outdoor and Habitat for Humanity trips. For the past 12 years, Coffey has volunteered for numerous Army programs and has earned the title of Army Family Team Building instructor/Master Trainer.
