ant to save some major cash? Live green! Yes,

it’s true — by simply changing a few old habits at a time, your budget can shrink without much effort. Miriam Easley, JBLM sustainability outreach coordinator, gives easy tips on the JBLM Sustainable Facebook page that everyone can start doing right away. She says, “Energy conservation is an easy way to start saving money. Just unplug all those energy ‘vampires’ that aren’t in use. They suck extra money from your monthly bill, such as cell phone chargers and power strips. Change out your light bulbs to LEDs or CFLs — the cost for the life of the bulb is far less than conventional lighting and it saves 12

on your electrical bill.” Also turn off all appliances, TVs and computers when not in use. Use fewer electric-powered appliances — develop your muscle power instead! Other simple money-savers are to turn off the water while you’re brushing your teeth, take shorter showers and pour extra water on your plants instead of down the drain. Cut down on your trash bill by taking your recyclables to the JBLM Recycling Centers. Shop in bulk with a friend and split the cost, shop locally at farmer’s markets (you can haggle prices if you wait until the last hours) and plant your own vegetable garden in a raised bed or containers at JBLM community gardens or at home (on-base residents can maintain raised beds or containers in backyards

as long as you restore the backyard to its original condition when you leave). “All these small actions have a cumulative effect both on your wallet and within the community,” says Easley. “Once you make each change a habit, it becomes a lifestyle.” To save on gas and auto repair bills, Easley recommends that you accelerate slowly, keep your tires properly inflated and regularly maintain your vehicle. Visit one of your MWR Auto Centers at Lewis Main or McChord Field to change your oil and fluids, where they can dispose of used oil safely, or bring in your used oil for disposal. Did you know you can take a class on basic car maintenance at the McChord Auto Center? Save more money by doing

JBLM youth are invited to Kids’ Fest for an out-of-this-world great time! Kids of all ages will enjoy learning about outer space through hands-on activities and crafts with the Hands On Children Museum, Pacific Science Center and the Museum of Flight. Kids’ Fest is Thursday, April 3, 1–4:30 p.m. Activities are located inside AFC Arena and the MWR Fest Tent, plus free bowling will be offered during the event at Bowl Arena Lanes. Join Family & MWR special events, CYSS and the SKIES dance and gymnastics teams, JBLM libraries and Madigan

Army Medical Center, as the winner of the Month of the Military Child poster contest is announced. AFC Arena is at 2275 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main. For more information, call 253-967-5776.

Bring your star to ‘SKIES’ At Kids’ Fest, children will enter a backyard-themed set, complete with tent, pretend fire that flickers, trees, the sound of crickets and five constellations. Participants will be able to gaze at the constellations through props that re-create them visually and morph them into SKIESUnlimited class participants including a dancer, gymnast, karate student, boxer and musician. The constellations represented will be the following: • Lepus for dance • Ara for gymnastics • Orion for karate • Gemini for boxing • Vela for music

Children will also create artwork to take home as they design a constellation. The sky’s the limit on what they can create! This event is designed to help children realize the importance of nature and to experience a sense of adventure for what awaits them in their world, including their immediate surroundings. Honoring military children all month, SKIESUnlimited invites you to “Bring your star to SKIES.” This interactive art, science and literacy experience invites children to explore constellations of the night sky. The “Bring Your Star to SKIES” event was created to craft a connection between self and nature, exploration of science and literacy skills and to celebrate the beauty of artistic self-expression. For your child to take part in experiences like this and many other fun instructional activities, register for SKIES classes today! Visit JBLMcyssRegistration. com for schedule and online enrollment.

Month of the Military Child Why we celebrate: To pay tribute to military children for their commitment, struggles and unconditional support for our troops.

JBLM youth have been invited to create a poster for the annual Month of the Military Child poster contest. This year’s theme is “My Real Life Hero,” and winners will be announced during Kids’ Fest, Thursday, April 3. In turn, we’d like to celebrate all of our military children as our “Real Life Heroes” in recognition of the contributions they make as their parent(s) serve our nation. Our military children endure a lifestyle to which few others can relate. This lifestyle, coupled with proper support from military programs and communities, can help form resilient, independent, creative and strong children. At JBLM, we support and honor these children. Parents are invited to “like” two of our Facebook pages — fb.com/JBLMcyss and fb.com/JBLMacs — for tips, advice and resources posted daily during April in celebration of Month of the Military Child.

CYSS youth trainers, Salena and Justin, will assist youth in reaching their fitness goals, while providing nutrition information and motivation. Here’s more about the program and the trainers: What experience do the CYSS trainers bring? Salena has three years of experience in child development with an emphasis on middle school–teens, while Justin has three years of experience in physical education and physical fitness. The two are a perfect combination for teaching youth the importance of physical fitness and nutrition. They both continue to take physical fitness trainings to enhance the course; their next training is a TRX course to teach youth how to incorporate this exercise activity into their workout regime. Why is fitness important to youth? Fitness is important to youth because it helps them to accomplish their life and career goals by being in the best physical shape possible. Healthy youth are happy and confident in their physical appearance when they are among their peers. Many overweight teens are teased, and this lowers their self-esteem. Youth who establish a healthy lifestyle in their adolescent years are more likely

Be financially successful by using two major resources By Eugene A. Woods, JBLM Financial Readiness Program Specialist

T

o become financially successful, don’t overlook two major resources: time and money. Understanding how to use them wisely is key to building wealth and eliminate debts. To get on the road to financial success, implement one or more of these steps: 1. First, establish financial goals and complete a budget worksheet to assess your financial stability. 2. Pay yourself first: Each time you get paid, place a set amount or allocate a

Learning to be financially savvy begins in childhood In honor of the Month of the Military Child, Mary Cron of the JBLM Financial Readiness Program has put together tips for youth. These lessons will go a long way toward financial independence if practiced early enough: $ Assist in financial goal setting. Develop a plan to pay for activities of interest to your child. $ Use allowance and gift money to start and maintain a savings account. Ten percent of any money received should be placed in the savings account first. $ Talk about the value of money. Only so much comes in, so only so much can be spent   without getting into debt. Money borrowed costs more in the long run due to interest. $ Differentiate between wants and needs. If it’s a want, ownership by the child in purchasing the item will place a higher value on their money (and yours) and the item. $ Encourage them to develop good financial habits now to avoid pitfalls later.

percentage of your pay into building an emergency savings fund. 3. Take advantage of having an automatic deduction from your payroll and put into your 401K, Individual Retirement Account or Thrift Savings Plan each pay period. 4. Seek professional advice from a qualified accredited financial counselor. Next, take steps to implement a plan to help eliminate debts: 1. Always pay your bills on time to avoid any penalties and late fees. 2. Pay more than the minimum payment on credit cards and store cards (revolv-

ing credit) if the balance is not paid in full every month. 3. When possible, keep the revolving credit balances below 30 percent of the credit limit. 4. When making an additional payment to an installment loan, such as an auto loan, bank loan, signature loan or mortgage payment, make sure that the creditor applies the additional amount to the principle of the loan. 5. Avoid any new loans, if possible, and especially avoid payday lenders, rent-to-

own and zero-down, no-interest (only for a certain number of months) loans. Read the fine print before signing. Start today to implement a plan to gain financial success freedom. Take the time to schedule an appointment to talk to a financial counselor. For more information or to schedule a one-on-one appointment, call Armed Forces Community Service at Lewis Main at 253-967-1453 or the Service Member & Family Readiness Center at McChord Field at 253-982-2695.

Fish Washington: Opportunities for you & your Family Washington has some of the best and most diverse fisheries in the country. Read on for details about trout and warmwater fishing at and around JBLM.

By Bruce Bolding, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

W

hether you’re an expert or novice when it comes to fishing, there are plenty of species and locations around JBLM that will fit the time and effort you have to spend. Now’s also the perfect time to think about fishing — the weather is better and opening day for lowland lake trout season is Saturday, April 26. One of the most common questions we get asked is, “Where can I go fishing for X, Y or Z?” To answer that and other questions about fishing in the state, check out “Fish Washington,” a searchable database on the WDFW website that allows you to search by county or by species. The species pages also have general information on each fish, where it can be found, fishing tactics and gear tips. There are informational videos that talk about location and fishing technique. at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/washington. Historically, lowland lake trout is far and away the most popular fishery in Washington, followed by warmwater fish such as bass, perch, catfish, crappie and bluegill. There are lots of places both at JBLM and nearby to catch all these species. For fishing on base, pick up the MWR Fishing Rules pamphlet for specifics.

On-base opportunities include American Lake for trout, Kokanee, bass and perch; Sequalitchew Lake for bass and crappie; Spanaway Lake for panfish; Lewis Lake for bass. Off-base but nearby is Lake Tapps for Tiger Muskie, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch and Crappie; Harts Lake for Channel Catfish; Rapjohn, Silver, Ohop, Clear, Tanwax and Kapow-

sin for trout, bass and panfish. Before you head out, make sure you have a Washington State fishing license. Active duty military stationed in Washington are eligible for resident license fees (e.g., $29.50 for freshwater only). Buy your license at the Northwest Adventure Center, Exchange or off base almost anywhere sporting goods are sold. The NAC also has rods, reels and boats for rent if you don’t have your own. Finally, make sure you know Washington’s regulations by picking up the WDFW Sport Rules pamphlet where you buy your license. There are two basic fishing clinics scheduled for Saturdays, April 5 and 19 at the NAC. The first is open to individuals and Families. The second is for women only. Depending on interest, more clinics may be scheduled throughout the summer. Visit JBLMmwrRegistration.com to sign up. Now’s the time to Fish Washington.
