Revel in the adventures of the day, tell lies by the fire or drift off to your personal star-gazer’s paradise. The itinerary for this May 4–9 trip consists of relaxing, exploring and enjoying the river. Warm breakfasts and coffee prepare you for the day’s river journey as your guides talk about what lies downstream. Top 7 exercise myths busted & what you should be doing By Sean Fenske, MS, BS, CSCS, Exercise Physiologist & Health Educator At the Armed Forces Wellness Center

The gym can be a competitive environment. With everyone looking for an edge to push their fitness level a little further a little faster, some unusual ideas can catch on like wildfire. Before you know it, you might be telling a friend this new idea and you can’t remember where you heard it. Some myths may be based on old information and some just are dreamed up and repeated by onlookers. Here are seven myths — busted! — you may recognize. Myth 1: Fat can be reduced by exercising the muscles in the target area. Reality: The body is a system. Exercising the muscles below or around the target area won’t reduce fat stored specifically in that area. The way that an individual stores and removes fat is mostly genetically based. Training a specific area will improve the targeted muscle but won’t reduce the fat from that area any more than training a different part of the body. Myth 2: Lactic acid causes muscle soreness. Reality: This myth is based on an outdated theory that has since been disproven. Lactic acid causes the burning feeling in a person’s muscles after an intense exercise. However, this is mostly removed three minutes after stopping the

intense exercise. The soreness felt in the days to follow is due to microscopic tearing of the muscle fibers and the resulting repair process to improve them. Myth 3: Altitude masks should be worn during exercise. Reality: Altitude masks reduce the amount of oxygen the user has to breathe. Living in a high-altitude environment with less oxygen can cause the body to change and adapt favorably when a person moves to a lower elevation. However, exercising with less oxygen reduces the intensity, duration and speed of recovery of the workout. This leads to a lightened exercise session, which will cause deconditioning over time. For maximum performance, a person would live in a high-altitude environment and exercise in a low-altitude oxygen-rich environment. A person wearing the mask while exercising is doing the opposite of what is ideal. Myth 4: Your body needs huge amounts of protein after exercise to recover. Reality: Following a workout, 20 grams of protein within an hour after exercise maximally stimulates muscle growth. Typically 1.2–1.7 grams of protein are recommended per kilogram of body weight per day. Myth 5: Low-intensity exercise burns the most fat. Reality: While very low intensity exercise uses a higher percentage of fat, the total amount of calories and fat used are

much less than when training at a slightly higher intensity. Working in the endurance or interval zones will burn the highest total amount of fat per exercise session. If you’re interested in knowing what these zones are for you individually, have them calculated during a fitness testing appointment at the Armed Forces Wellness Center. Myth 6: Muscle turns into fat when you stop exercising. Reality: When a person stops or greatly reduces exercise, there will be muscle lost and fat gained if they continue to eat the same amount. However, muscle doesn’t become fat. With appropriate eating habits and reduction in calories consumed, muscle loss and fat gain can be reduced. Myth 7: Exercising while sick helps you get better faster. Reality: The immune system is reduced after exercising. Exercising while sick will increase the stress on the immune system and increase the length of time it takes to get well. Also, the chance of getting other exercisers sick is higher. What to do now? Use this newfound knowledge to help you separate myth from reality while staying active! If you’re interested in improving or getting started with your fitness and wellness goals, visit the Armed Forces Wellness Center at Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center at Lewis Main. You can purchase bowling party packages and reserve a private area for your party. The basic pack comes with two games of bowling, rental shoes, unlimited cups of soda and an ice cream cup for each person, plus three free games of bowling for the birthday boy or girl on their next visit, table place settings and balloons. Each bowling center can provide bumpers in your lane upon request. At Sounders Lanes Family Fun Center, you have the option to choose the lasergame pack instead. It includes your own table in the indoor play area and three laser game tokens per child, plus unlimited soda, an ice cream cup, table settings and balloons. Want more to eat? You’re allowed to bring in a birthday cake, but other food needs to be ordered from the Strike Zone Café, so consider ordering the foodoption party packages.

Simply place your order two weeks in advance at the Bistro at Russell Landing, the Battle Bean coffee shop at Stone Education Center or American Lake Conference Center. For ideas, take a look at photos online at JBLMmwr.com/AmericanLakeConference Center/cakegallery, call 253-966-3988 or email catering@JBLMmwr.com. Reserve a lakeside pavilion If you’re anticipating a late spring or summer birthday bash, have it outdoors in a covered pavilion at Shoreline Park, Russell Landing or Summer Cove, located at Lewis North next to American Lake. Reserve your place now for the best availability and you can breathe easier when party time is near! Russell Landing and Summer Cove pavilions accommodate from 40–150 people. Summer Cove’s playground, which has age-appropriate play areas for both small children and older kids, is a short walk away. You also can spend time on the sandy beach with a view of Mount Rainier overlooking American Lake. Shoreline Park pavilions accommodate

new with JBLM libraries Author visits JBLM, shares story of WWI service dog By Sgt. Ryan Hallock, 19th Public Affairs Detachment

T

oday, we understand the ways that service animals improve the mental health of Soldiers in war zones. There is a comfort that comes from having an unfailingly loyal companion during such stressful times,” writes Ann Bausum in her National Geographic Kids book “Stubby the War Dog.” The award-winning author visited JBLM last month to share the true story of World War I’s “bravest dog” during the JBLM’s Reads finale event at the Club at McChord Field. In 1917, Stubby deployed with his best friend, Pvt. James Robert Conroy, and the 102nd Infantry Regiment into the trenches of France, where the service dog instilled resilience into his fellow Soldiers. Bausum served as the feature speaker of the event and spoke about Stubby’s life, military service and her inspirations to write a children and adult edition entitled “Sergeant Stubby: How a Stray Dog and His Best Friend Helped Win World War I and Stole the Heart of a Nation.” “I think Stubby’s story is special because of how meaningful he was to the Soldiers who were around him during war time,” says Bausum. “It has helped me to understand the value of animals like that in war time, which we all know much better than we did 100 years ago.” During Stubby’s time at war, he transitioned from a unit mascot to a military service dog, aiding medics in finding friendly survivors on the battlefield, signaling imminent gas attacks, and visiting with soldiers to boost morale. “I think we’ve now begun to realize

that dogs and other service animals don’t just work during war, they provide a sense of constancy, companionship, and trust,” says Bausum. Melissa Duffy, a dog handler with Paws to Read, attended the event with her service dog, Delilah, and knows just how valuable companion dogs can be to Service Members. “They’re definitely calming,” says Duffy of service dogs. “You don’t have to talk if you’re stressed out; they’re there and they understand you. They’re that comfort.” Delilah, a mix of Great Dane and Collie, has visited nursing homes, Soldiers prior to deployment and children at

Those in attendance each received free, signed copies of the Stubby books and after Bausum’s presentation, got the opportunity to meet the author, who says it was “an awesome experience in the original sense of the word.” “I’m awestruck to be on a base,” says Bausum. “It’s a real privilege and humbling to be around service men and women who have a far better understanding of what it means to be involved with combat than I ever can.” For more information about upcoming JBLM library events, visit JBLMmwr.com/ libraries.
