when it comes to healthy eating by Patti Jeffrey

D

o you have a dread of healthy food — imagining it’s not tasty or satisfying enough for your type of food cravings? You’re probably believing too many myths. That’s right — myths about what health food really is. Here’s a great way to change your perspective: Pretend you’ve never heard the words “health food” and just focus on what you get to enjoy — a whole world of foods that can be spicy, bold, tangy, rich, satisfying and dripping with deliciousness. A fantastic way to eat better is in the preparation — baking or sautéing in olive or coconut oil rather than deep-fat frying, steaming veggies rather than boiling (to keep in vitamins rather than pouring them down the drain), seasoning with herbs and spices instead of salt and eating whole foods rather than processed foods that are stuffed with fillers. Not only do you get to enjoy the fresher taste, your system won’t be overwhelmed with grease, salt, sugar or fillers. Also experiment with different toppings. Try salsa, plain yogurt, oatmeal, diced peppers, boiled eggs, raw nuts or chickpeas for topping off a baked potato, salad, crackers or sandwich.

Like more fresh food on your table? Growing your own veggies, herbs, fruits and other edibles is so satisfying, you’ll wonder why you haven’t done it before. Even if you’re in a dorm, barracks or townhouse at JBLM, by renting a garden plot at JBLM, you can choose from a wide variety of foods to grow from starters or seeds. Find ideas at nurseries, home and garden stores or even big-box grocery stores with garden shops. If you’d rather start small (and have the space), grow your own tomatoes, peas, beans, potatoes, strawberries or herbs in big potting containers right on your patio or porch. It’s easy, cheap and gives you the most incredibly delicious, freshest foods you’ve ever tasted. Imagine getting home, plucking a handful of sweet cherry tomatoes and popping them like candy into your mouth. You can even make it a fun Family project! For more information on renting a garden plot at JBLM, call the Northwest Adventure Center at 253-967-7744 or Adventures Unlimited at 253-982-2206.

Dining out’s a great adventure into healthy eating Eating out can be a challenge, but also a great opportunity to try better foods. Skip the fast-food joints and try some healthy-choice meals at our eateries

PRETEND YOU’VE NEVER HEARD THE WORDS “HEALTH FOOD” AND JUST FOCUS ON WHAT YOU GET TO ENJOY — a whole world of foods that can be spicy, bold, tangy, rich, satisfying and dripping with deliciousness. instead. (And, if you’re crunched for time at breakfast or lunch, order ahead and we’ll have your meal ready for pick-up.) Look and feel lighter by ordering salads that come in a huge variety of bowls. Cut down on sandwich calories with more veggies, protein-rich and vitamin-filled fish, lean meat, beans and light spreads. Savor lighter, great-tasting sandwich options, as well. Here’s a sample of what you can find when you eat out with us: • The Bistro at Russell Landing — homemade soup of the day, bison burger (leaner than beef), Southwest barbecue chicken salad, Bistro Cobb salad, Greek salad and classic Caesar. • Habañero Mexican Grill — “vegetariano” burrito or taco salad, chicken Caesar, ham or turkey jalapeño wrap, rice and beans, ensalada Habañero (burrito or

guacamole and toppings. • Battle Bean at McChord Field — fruit cup and parfait cup (berries and yogurt with granola). • Battle Beans at Lewis Main — turkey wrap (spinach wrap with herb cream cheese, turkey, lettuce, tomato and cheese) and Southwestern chicken wrap (sun-dried tomato tortilla wrap, Southwestern-flavored cream cheese, chicken, lettuce and cheeses). • Soon to come when the Globemaster Grill at the Club at McChord Field reopens — a complete salad bar and other healthy menu items. For all the menus, look online at JBLMmwr.com under Food & Entertainment.

Circle the grocery store A simple rule of thumb for buying whole foods whenever you’re at the grocery store is to shop around the perimeter. That’s where you’ll find dairy, fish, meat, fresh fruits and veggies and other whole foods. By planning your meals ahead of time and having a grocery list of ingredients, you’ll avoid the “what to get for dinner” trips down the center aisles with the breaded, fried, assembled, high-salt, preserved, frozen and prepackaged meals (even frozen veggies have added salt!). Taking these small steps toward eating more wholesome foods in the way you cook, shop and dine out pay out real rewards for you and your Family. JBLMmwr.com

protect our children

It’s Child Abuse Prevention Month April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Month of the Military Child. The Family Advocacy Program wants to remind you that no parent is perfect — but all parents can supervise carefully and take simple steps to keep children safe and sound. Supervision can be the difference between a safe situation and a dangerous one. Keeping kids safe can be a challenge. Balance daily activities to reduce distractions and prevent accidents or injuries. Seconds can make the difference. Childproofing is more than outlet covers and

cabinet latches. Take the time to learn how to make your kids’ environment both child-friendly and safe. Help other children around you stay safe. If you see child abuse or neglect, call JBLM Police at 253-912-4442 or WA State Child Protective Services at 1-866-363-4276. Both are available 24/7. Making a report may just save a child’s life. We know you’re juggling a lot. We’re here to help. Support is available through Military OneSource (1-800-342-9674), JBLM Armed Forces Community Service Center (253-967-7166) and the AFCS Family Advocacy Program (253-967-5940).
