Hit the river with JBLM Adventure programs With the amazing snow season we’ve had this winter, we’re getting excited about our time on the river starting in April and running through August. Start the season with the Skykomish and Wenatchee, both of which are snow-melt dependent. The more snow that falls, the longer whitewater season and the bigger the waves. We can usually run those rivers from March until June (sometimes July). Don’t be concerned about cold water — we just acquired fleece-lined NRS wetsuits. We also have a selection of fleece-lined wetsuit jackets so you can be comfortable no matter what the conditions. When those rivers start to get smaller, we focus our attention on standup paddleboarding or inflatable kayaking on the same rivers through the summer.

We start rafting the White Salmon River in August and run through September. Why so late in the summer? This river runs through a small canyon, and the best time to run it is when the water level is lower. If you want to go on your own, the company we use has allowed us to sell tax-free discounted slots on the river starting next month.

Our team of river guides is now seven strong. With four of us certified in swiftwater rescue, you have no need to worry on your river adventure. With more than

Russell Landing Marina is opening!

Get your boater education card Russell Landing Marina opens for the summer Friday, April 1 for boat owners to place their boats into the water. Boat owners whose names are on the waiting list for a slip will be contacted in the weeks following the opening to offer open slips to them.

Boaters in Washington need to have their Washington State Boater Education Card (or those whose certification meets the NASBLA requirement) with them when operating a boat 15 horsepower or greater. Boateroperators born before Jan. 1, 1955, are exempt but may choose to get a card if they plan to boat in Canada or Oregon since both require mandatory education. This also now applies to the boat rentals provided by Russell Landing. To get free certification, go to boatus.org/washington.

The Marina is located at Lewis North, 8981 American Lake Ave. Later this month, we’ll be releasing rainbow trout that have been fed in the fish pens situated on the side of the docks since November (they were brought by Wildlife and Fisheries as fingerlings).

On Memorial Day this year, Shoreline Park will open. Bring the kids to swim and slide into the water! Lifeguards will man the area daily beginning Monday, May 29.

Hunter education Take required hunter safety course

The Outdoor Recreation Shotgun Shooting Complex is hosting hunter safety education April 3–7, May 15–19 and June 12–16. “To really give your Family 100%, I believe you have to regularly tend to your own garden. Yoga can be a vehicle for journey and development for parent and child together,” McCarty says.

Baseball skills competition is back at JBLM! Pitch, Hit & Run is a free baseball skills competition open to ages 7–14. It’s May 2–3 at Lewis Main and McChord Field ball fields. Focusing on the areas of pitching, hitting and base running, it’s from 5–7 p.m. Registration is onsite; be sure to bring your child’s birth certificate for age verification. You play a role in Child Abuse Prevention Month

Child abuse and neglect prevention is everyone’s business It can be far too easy to see something worrisome or suspicious, like possible child abuse or neglect, and say to yourself, “Someone else will probably take action.” It may feel awkward to respond and seem like it’s none of your business.

But the safety and well-being of children is everyone’s business. It’s our responsibility as a society to ensure that children are able to grow up safe and healthy. It only takes a minute to speak up if you see a parent in need or a child in danger.

If you see a parent under stress, you can step in and offer assistance. You can offer to watch their child for a short time to give them a break. They may need to talk about their frustrations. Sometimes listening is the best thing you can do.

There are also resources you can direct them to for professional advice and support. JBLM New Parent Support Program (253-967-7409) is a great resource for parents of children up to 3 years of age. Parents with children of all ages can contact Military OneSource (1-800-342-9647) for no-cost, confidential non-medical counseling. Additional-

If you’re a parent and find yourself under stress, you can access these programs as well. Supervision is key to keeping your child safe. Try to avoid leaving your child unsupervised, but if you absolutely must step away for a moment to collect yourself, make sure young children are secured in a safe place like a playpen or crib. If you need a longer break, reach out to a friend, neighbor or babysitter and arrange for someone to watch your child while you have some time to cool off and relax. It’s normal to get frustrated from time to time and it’s important you ask for help when you need it.

If you suspect that a child is being neglected or abused, it’s your business to speak up. Your action could help save a child. If you see an unsupervised child, take immediate action. Find the child’s caregiver or call local law enforcement for help. If you witness violence or believe someone is in imminent danger, call 911, the JBLM Military Police (253-912-4442) or WA State Child Protective Services (866-363-4276), available 24/7. Making a report may just save a child’s life.
