Head to the water with JBLM Go on a wild whitewater adventure with expert guides

Photos by Outdoor Recreation staff

Hit the rapids of White Salmon Falls this season (photo at left) with your whitewater guides, pictured above. Join Alisha and Brad (on the boats) and, standing, Sydney, Bryce, Nate, Robert and Dana on an adventure trip.

brave the rapids

Hit the river with JBLM Adventure programs With the amazing snow season we’ve had this winter, we’re getting excited about our time on the river starting in April and running through August. Start the season with the Skykomish and Wenatchee, both of which are snow-melt dependent. The more snow that falls, the longer whitewater season and the bigger the waves. We can usually run those rivers from March until June (sometimes July). Don’t be concerned about cold water — we just acquired fleece-lined NRS wetsuits. We also have a selection of fleece-lined wetsuit jackets so you can be comfortable no matter what the conditions. When those rivers start to get smaller, we focus our attention on standup paddleboarding or inflatable kayaking on the same rivers through the summer. We start rafting the White Salmon River in August and run through September. Why so late in the summer? This river runs through a small canyon, and the best time to run it is when the water level is lower. If you want to go on your own, the company we use has allowed us to sell tax-free discounted slots on the river starting next month. Our team of river guides is now seven strong. With four of us certified in swiftwater rescue, you have no need to worry on your river adventure. With more than

22

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus April 2017

4,000 hours on the river combined, our goal is to take you on the adventure of a lifetime while providing the safest experience possible. Our team includes Brad, Robert, Dana, Bryce, Sydney, Alisha and Nate, and we can’t wait to meet you on your next river adventure! With all of our rivers, we can run private adventures that suit the needs of your Family, friends, unit or special event. If you have any questions about the scheduled river adventures or private river adventures designed to fit your needs, email JBLMadventuretrips@ gmail.com.

Russell Landing Marina is opening!

Get your boater education card Russell Landing Marina opens for the summer Friday, April 1 for boat owners to place their boats into the water. Boat owners whose names are on the waiting list for a slip will be contacted in the weeks following the opening to offer open slips to them. Boaters in Washington need to have their Washington State Boater Education Card (or those whose certification meets the NASBLA requirement) with them when operating a boat 15 horsepower or greater. Boateroperators born before Jan. 1, 1955, are exempt but may choose to get a card if they plan to boat in Canada or Oregon since both require mandatory education. This also now applies to the boat rentals provided by Russell Landing. To get free certification, go to boatus.org/washington. Saturday, April 8, the marina hosts a kokanee fishing workshop at 1 p.m. Presented by Alan Greenbagh, this workshop covers line setup, what attracts

kokanee, trolling techniques and much more. Registration is $5 and is required (253-967-2510).

Quality parent-and-me time new yoga classes

Reap the benefits of yoga with your child In the hustle and bustle of being a parent, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself, but now SKIESUnlimited offers you the best way to do this — yoga! Recently added to the SKIESUnlimited class calendar, yoga classes for Families

26

are already proving popular. Yoga classes are for children up to age 6. Basic yoga postures and principles are introduced through fun and engaging activities. Parents are highly encouraged to attend. Yoga can be beneficial for everyone at any age or phase of life. “Many people think that practicing yoga is about being flexible, but I really enjoy show-

with Child & Youth Services ing parents that moving their bodies in creative ways sets a positive example for their children in how to be healthy and appreciate themselves while not taking themselves too seriously,” says Kimberly McCarty, SKIESUnlimited yoga instructor. The yoga program follows the Hatha and Vinyasa flow traditions with emphasis on strength, balance, flexibil-

ity, breath and mindfulness. It’s a great way to pamper yourself and your child, allowing you to grab some meaningful “me” time as you and your child bond and create new healthy habits. “To really give your Family 100%, I believe you have to regularly tend to your own garden. Yoga can be a vehicle for journey and development for parent and child together,” McCarty says. The SKIESUnlimited yoga program is highly successful and is rapidly expanding. This month, classes include parentand-me yoga and pre- and postnatal yoga (for prenatal yoga, expecting parents must be accompanied by an older child). Yoga is a personal journey that McCarty values helping others to embark on. Find out more about class offerings by calling 253-966-3539 or visiting JBLMcysRegistration.com. Children must be CYS-registered to attend.

You play a role in Child Abuse Prevention Month

Child abuse and neglect prevention is everyone’s business It can be far too easy to see something worrisome or suspicious, like possible child abuse or neglect, and say to yourself, “Someone else will probably take action.” It may feel awkward to respond and seem like it’s none of your business. But the safety and well-being of children is everyone’s business. It’s our responsibility as a society to ensure that children are able to grow up safe and healthy. It only takes a minute to speak up if you see a parent in need or a child in danger. If you see a parent under stress, you can step in and offer assistance. You can offer to watch their child for a short time to give them a break. They may need to talk about their frustrations. Sometimes listening is the best thing you can do. There are also resources you can direct them to for professional advice and support. JBLM New Parent Support Program (253-967-7409) is a great resource for parents of children up to 3 years of age. Parents with children of all ages can contact Military OneSource (1-800-342-9647) for no-cost, confidential non-medical counseling. Additional-

preventing child abuse ly, military Families may receive Family Resiliency Training from the FOCUS Project at JBLM (253-966-6390). If you’re a parent and find yourself under stress, you can access these programs as well. Supervision is key to keeping your child safe. Try to avoid leaving your child unsupervised, but if you absolutely must step away for a moment to collect yourself, make sure young children are secured in a safe place like a playpen or crib. If you need a longer break, reach out to a friend, neighbor or babysitter and arrange for someone to watch your child while you have some time to cool off and relax. It’s normal to get frustrated from time to time and it’s important you ask for help when you need it. If you suspect that a child is being neglected or abused, it’s your business to speak up. Your action could help save a child. If you see an unsupervised child, take immediate action. Find the child’s caregiver or call local law enforcement for help. If you witness violence or believe someone is in imminent danger, call 911, the JBLM Military Police (253-912-4442) or WA State Child Protective Services (866-363-4276), available 24/7. Making a report may just save a child’s life. We know you're juggling a lot. We're here to help. Support is available through Military OneSource (1-800-342-9674), JBLM Armed Forces Community Service Center (253-967-7166) and the AFCS Family Advocacy Program (253-967-5901). When a child’s safety is compromised, don’t assume someone else will take action. It only takes a minute to reach out to a parent in need, reach out for help if you’re a frustrated parent or report suspected abuse or neglect. Have the courage to speak up for a child and you could save a life! For more information, visit MilitaryOneSource.mil, an official Department of Defense website.

resiliency tip of the month

Talking as a Family during transitions helps manage change It’s the time of year when things are blooming and growing. Just as our lawns and plants may need a little attention, so do our relationships. Taking time to connect is important, whether you are in a new relationship or have been in your relationship for years. Scheduling a date night or using a deck of conversation

cards to spend quality time together and learn more about one another is a great way to help your relationship grow. FOCUS helps couples (married and unmarried) learn many skills so your relationship can blossom. Don’t just get by, get stronger! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org. You may also visit FOCUS online at FocusProject. org or fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining.
