What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

DANIELLE HOLLINGER works for the Directorate of Personnel and Family Readiness as a Family Advocacy Program Specialist. She has been married to Chief Master Sgt. Nicholas Hollinger for 22 years and has two children, Kortney and Jakob.

2

My Family and I have been at JBLM for almost two years, and MWR programs have been the foundation of our recreational and personal needs. MWR programs encompass every facet of our daily life. For example, my husband uses the McChord Fitness Center on a regular basis. I’ve personally attended Zumba classes, aerobic kickboxing classes and Beliraq classes at the McChord Fitness Center Annex. Last summer, we spent many evenings after work at the outdoor pool at McChord Field basking in the Pacific Northwest sun. We’ve also participated in at least three 5K runs sponsored by MWR, including the Run, Forest Run 5K with the Lt. Dan Band. All of these services assist us in accomplishing and maintaining personal fitness goals. MWR programs also foster Family resiliency. Golfing has been a primary source of entertainment for my husband and son. I can’t count how many Saturday afternoons they’ve gone to play a round of golf or to spend a couple of hours at the driving range at Whispering Firs Golf Course. Our whole Family has benefited from both Bowl Arena Lanes and Sounders Lanes. Lunch dates with my husband, evening bowling leagues, nine-pin no-tap tournaments or just an afternoon of fun with visiting Family are just a few examples of how MWR bowling programs have enhanced Family readiness. Finally, MWR programs have assisted with daily life. My 17-year-old son bought his first car from the car resale lot. My husband often utilizes the McChord Auto Center for basic car maintenance and minor repairs, and he stores his boat at the RV/boat storage lot. My Family is tremendously thankful for MWR’s dedication to Service members and their Families and their continued support of the JBLM community.

When you walk into Samuel Adams Brewhouse at Eagles Pride Golf Course, you're greeted by a spacious, welcoming dining area. With cozy booths, a warm fireplace, big-screen TVs, walk-up bar and unbeatable view, you'll feel instantly relaxed. Not only does Sam Adams set a warm ambience, you'll be impressed by their locally sourced menu items, cooked-from-scratch recipes and award-winning craft beers from Samuel Adams, as well as other local and regional craft offerings. “We're proud of the look and feel of the establishment, plus our food quality and pricing,” says Derek Torrence, food and beverage manager. Sandwich meats are locally sourced and all meats are fresh, never frozen. Kitchen supervisor Marissa Meeks says, “A lot of thought goes into our products. We use the best ingredients we can find and procure high-quality ingredients for our menu items.” The proof of their pride is in customer

favorites, such as the Revolution burger, a third-pound beef patty with melted pepper jack cheese, crisp bacon, fresh-sliced jalapeño, lettuce, tomato and sliced red onion. They also feature main entrée plates, such as salmon, frenched bone-in pork chops, flat-iron steaks and chicken, plus mouthwatering desserts after dinner. Look for rotating chef's specials in addition to the daily menu, plus happy hour food and drink discounts 5–7 p.m. During April, enjoy a half-sandwich and house salad for $7.95, and treat your professional administrator to lunch Wednesday, April 25. Also attend Open Mic Night Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. with drink and dinner specials. “We're excited for the upcoming spring and summer season,” Derek says. “We'll be rolling up the doors to the patio when it gets warm, making the dining space even bigger. Our location is also fantastic —it's central to communities both north and south of us and easy to find from I-5.” For more information, call 253-964-2792. JBLMmwr.com

“I took a basic kayaking course. I have always wanted to learn to kayak. The class was very well run — they were supportive and encouraging for all the students and did an excellent job of teaching us basic skills!”

“MWR hosted a trip to White Pass. The trip was awesome but the driver whom we called Mr. K. was phenomenal. It's nice to know when you go on trips that MWR ensures they have the best drivers on the job. Not only did he drive the van but was our tour guide and we had a great time with him.”

20

“I was greeted right away by a staff member and made to feel welcome. Facility looks great and the atmosphere inviting.”

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus April 2018

“My wife and I both recently participated in the four-day San Juan kayak trip. We both had a phenomenal time and were extremely impressed by our guide's competence, knowledge and expertise. It was quite obvious that every aspect of the trip was meticulously planned and considered.”

“The new staff is overflowing with useful information and their ability to answer even the most naive questions, in such a respectable way, is evidence of their professionalism.”

Get ready to compete in bodybuilding show Enter Bodybuilding Championship

Emiliano Hernandez

Are you into bodybuilding? Want to enter the world of competition? Start training now for the 2018 JBLM Bodybuilding Championship Saturday, Aug. 11! Individuals need to enter the competition by Friday, July 27. Pay a $25 entry fee for all classes, both male and female. Categories are: • Women — bikini, figure and women's physique. • Men — body building, physique and classic physique. Weight classes are: • Women — lightweight (up to 125 pounds), Middleweight (125–140 pounds), heavyweight (over 140 pounds). • Men — lightweight (under 165.25 pounds), middleweight (165.25–187.25 pounds), heavyweight (over 187.25 pounds). Registration is open to the JBLM community; entry forms are available online at JBLMmwr.com and at JBLM sports and fitness centers. Questions? For more information, call 253-967-5776.

Tips for training for your first show Are you new to bodybuilding shows? Here are some tips gleaned from various bodybuilding websites on how to prepare for your first competition starting this month: • Go to a competition and check it out. Watch for the category in which you'd like to compete and observe how the judges and audience respond to each competitor. Take notes about what impresses them and gets them revved. • If possible, have an experienced mentor assess your physique. • Train with a knowledgeable partner or someone who supports you (even another competitor will be OK). Ask them to be honest with you and

what you need to work on. Competition diet, weight training and cardio workouts are the most important ingredients to competition success. Muscle proportion, separation and size should be your workout priorities. • Start your diet for the competition now. • Start working on your routine and poses after your workout. Have someone take photos of you in each pose for critiquing. That way, you can monitor your progress in the coming months. You need to hold each pose for at least 10 seconds — it’s much harder than it looks! Practice your poses while keeping your entire body tensed and tight.

FOCUS Youth

Celebrate the Month of the Military Child F

rom deployments to new schools, military children are faced with unique challenges that ordinary youth their age never experience. Their ability to adapt to present and future changes deserves our respect and admiration. In an effort to recognize the hard work and applaud the courage of military children, the Department of Defense has deemed April as the Month of the Military Child. It’s a time to honor military youth for the important role they play in contributing to the strength of our military worldwide.

26

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus April 2018

MOMC also reaffirms the military’s commitment to ensuring excellence in schools, childcare and youth services, providing a strong supportive environment where children can thrive. A 2015 military demographics report listed on defense.gov counted nearly 2 million “totalforce dependent children” in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger established April as the Month of The Military Child in 1986, and the Department of Defense has honored his initiative ever since.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

If you suspect that a child is being neglected or abused, it is your business to speak up. Your action could help save a child.

34

Child abuse and neglect prevention — it is your business

I

t can be far too easy to see something worrisome or suspicious, like possible child abuse or neglect, and say to yourself, “Somebody else will probably take action.” It may feel awkward to respond and seem like it’s none of your business. But the safety and well-being of children is everyone’s business. It’s our responsibility as a society to ensure that children are able to grow up safe and healthy. If you see a parent under stress, you can step in and offer assistance. You can offer to watch their child for a short time to give them a break or simply be a supportive listener. If you are a parent and need a break yourself, reach out to a friend, neighbor or babysitter and arrange for someone to watch your child while you have some time for self-care. It’s normal to get frustrated from time to time, and it’s important you ask for help when you need it. There are resources that parents can access for professional advice and support. JBLM New Parent Support Program (253-967-7409) is a great resource for expecting parents and those with children up to 3 years old. Parents with children of all ages can contact Military OneSource (1-800-342-9647) for no-cost, confidential non-medical counseling. Additionally, military families can receive Family Resiliency Training from FOCUS (253-966-6390). If you suspect that a child is being neglected or abused, it is your business to speak up. Your action could help save a child. If you see an unsupervised child, take immediate action. Find the child’s caregiver or call local law enforcement for help. If you witness violence or believe someone is in imminent danger, call 911 or JBLM Military Police (253-912-4442) or Washington State Child Protective Services (1-866-363-4276), both available 24/7. Making a report may just save a child’s life. We know you’re juggling a lot. We’re here to help. Support is available through Military OneSource, JBLM Department of Personnel and Family Readiness (253-967-7166) and the DPFR Family Advocacy Program (253-967-5901). For more information, visit Military OneSource at MilitaryOneSource.mil.

EAP Tip of the Month

EFMP Family events

April is National Alcohol Awareness Month

Attend EFMP archery event and parent support

Drinking too much alcohol increases people’s risk of injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease and some types of cancer. This April, during Alcohol Awareness Month, JBLM EAP encourages you to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of drinking too much. In Washington alone, there have been 8,414 drunk-driving accidents within the past year. To spread the word and prevent alcohol abuse, JBLM EAP is joining other organizations across the country to honor Alcohol Awareness Month. If you're drinking too much, you can improve your health by cutting back or quitting. The JBLM EAP coordinators are here to assist and support if you or someone you know is considering cutting or stopping alcohol use. To learn more about this topic or seek support, visit the EAP team at 2008B N. 3rd (at Pendleton), Room 114 or call 253-732-2214.

The Exceptional Family Member Program provides assistance and recreational events for EFMP-enrolled Families and retirees with Family members who have special needs. The Outdoor Recreation program is joining us to offer JBLM EFMP Families a free archery range event Thursday, April 5, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at CARES. Space is limited; registration is required at: JBLM-efmp-archery-2018.eventbrite.com. EFMP parents, take an opportunity to socialize monthly at EFMP Parents Connect with others who “get it” by EFMP parents for ALL EFMP parents. We know it’s hard to be everything. Please make the time to take care of yourself. We meet the third Wednesday of the month, 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at CARES. This month’s meeting is April 18.

FOCUS Tip of the Month Organize your cleaning Now that the weather's getting better, you might be ready to start spring cleaning. While it can feel nice to clean up after winter, there are chores to be done year-round! Consider creating a chore chart so everyone in the Family knows what needs to be done and who's responsible for doing it. Don’t be afraid to get creative! For instance, create a chart with pictures for younger Family members. The FOCUS program can help Families with chore charts and many other wonderful skills to help stay on task. Don’t just get by, get stronger! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org. JBLMmwr.com
