What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate.

Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

DANIELLE HOLLINGER works for the Directorate of Personnel and Family Readiness as a Family Advocacy Program Specialist. She has been married to Chief Master Sgt. Nicholas Hollinger for 22 years and has two children, Kortney and Jakob.

My Family and I have been at JBLM for almost two years, and MWR programs have been the foundation of our recreational and personal needs.

MWR programs encompass every facet of our daily life. For example, my husband uses the McChord Fitness Center on a regular basis. I’ve personally attended Zumba classes, aerobic kickboxing classes and Beliraq classes at the McChord Fitness Center Annex.

Last summer, we spent many evenings after work at the outdoor pool at McChord Field basking in the Pacific Northwest sun. We’ve also participated in at least three 5K runs sponsored by MWR, including the Run, Forest Run 5K with the Lt. Dan Band. All of these services assist us in accomplishing and maintaining personal fitness goals.

MWR programs also foster Family resiliency. Golfing has been a primary source of entertainment for my husband and son. I can’t count how many Saturday afternoons they’ve gone to play a round of golf or to spend a couple of hours at the driving range at Whispering Firs Golf Course.

Our whole Family has benefited from both Bowl Arena Lanes and Sounders Lanes. Lunch dates with my husband, evening bowling leagues, nine-pin no-tap tournaments or just an afternoon of fun with visiting Family are just a few examples of how MWR bowling programs have enhanced Family readiness.

Finally, MWR programs have assisted with daily life. My 17-year-old son bought his first car from the car resale lot. My husband often utilizes the McChord Auto Center for basic car maintenance and minor repairs, and he stores his boat at the RV/boat storage lot.

My Family is tremendously thankful for MWR’s dedication to Service members and their Families and their continued support of the JBLM community.

The show, brought to you by Army Entertainment, stars the Amazing Johnathan, magician-comedian and performer, is hosted by comedian Key Lewis and features a Cirquestyle acrobatic team Duo Enchantment and contortionist Anna Brown.

Individuals need to enter the competition

by Friday, July 27. Pay a $25 entry fee for all classes, both male and female.

Categories are: • Women — bikini, figure and women's physique.

• Men — body building, physique and classic physique.

Weight classes are: • Women — lightweight (up to 125 pounds), Middleweight (125–140 pounds), heavyweight (over 140 pounds).

• Men — lightweight (under 165.25 pounds), middleweight (165.25–187.25 pounds), heavyweight (over 187.25 pounds).

Tips for training for your first show Are you new to bodybuilding shows? Here are some tips gleaned from various bodybuilding websites on how to prepare for your first competition starting this month: • Go to a competition and check it out. Watch for the category in which you'd like to compete and observe how the judges and audience respond to each competitor. Take notes about what impresses them and gets them revved.

• If possible, have an experienced mentor assess your physique.

• Train with a knowledgeable partner or someone who supports you (even another competitor will be OK). Ask them to be honest with you and

what you need to work on. Competition diet, weight training and cardio workouts are the most important ingredients to competition success.

Muscle proportion, separation and size should be your workout priorities.

• Start your diet for the competition now.

• Start working on your routine and poses after your workout. Have someone take photos of you in each pose for critiquing. That way, you can monitor your progress in the coming months.

You need to hold each pose for at least 10 seconds — it’s much harder than it looks!

Practice your poses while keeping your entire body tensed and tight.

A 2015 military demographics report listed on defense.gov counted nearly 2 million “totalforce dependent children” in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines.

Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger established April as the Month of The Military Child in 1986, and the Department of Defense has honored his initiative ever since.

Sexual Assault Awareness Prevention Month JBLM hosts free self-defense classes Become actively involved in preventing sexual assault by joining SHARP for a month of Rape Aggression Defense System training.

To showcase the RAD System, SHARP will be hosting a demo day Friday, April 6 for Battalion Command Teams (and higher) and females ages 18 and older. If you suspect that a child is being neglected or abused, it is your business to speak up.

Your action could help save a child.

Child abuse and neglect prevention — it is your business

I

t can be far too easy to see something worrisome or suspicious, like possible child abuse or neglect, and say to yourself, “Somebody else will probably take action.” It may feel awkward to respond and seem like it’s none of your business.

But the safety and well-being of children is everyone’s business. It’s our responsibility as a society to ensure that children are able to grow up safe and healthy.

If you see a parent under stress, you can step in and offer assistance. You can offer to watch their child for a short time to give them a break or simply be a supportive listener. If you are a parent and need a break yourself, reach out to a friend, neighbor or babysitter and arrange for someone to watch your child while you have some time for self-care. It’s normal to get frustrated from time to time, and it’s important you ask for help when you need it.

There are resources that parents can access for professional advice and support. JBLM New Parent Support Program (253-967-7409) is a great resource for expecting parents and those with children up to 3 years old. Parents with children of all ages can contact Military OneSource (1-800-342-9647) for no-cost, confidential non-medical counseling. Additionally, military families can receive Family Resiliency Training from FOCUS (253-966-6390).

If you suspect that a child is being neglected or abused, it is your business to speak up. Your action could help save a child.

If you see an unsupervised child, take immediate action. Find the child’s caregiver or call local law enforcement for help. If you witness violence or believe someone is in imminent danger, call 911 or JBLM Military Police (253-912-4442) or Washington State Child Protective Services (1-866-363-4276), both available 24/7. Making a report may just save a child’s life.

April is National Alcohol Awareness Month

Attend EFMP archery event and parent support

Drinking too much alcohol increases people’s risk of injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease and some types of cancer.

This April, during Alcohol Awareness Month, JBLM EAP encourages you to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of drinking too much. In Washington alone, there have been 8,414 drunk-driving accidents within the past year.

To spread the word and prevent alcohol abuse, JBLM EAP is joining other organizations across the country to honor Alcohol Awareness Month. If you're drinking too much, you can improve your health by cutting back or quitting. The JBLM EAP coordinators are here to assist and support if you or someone you know is considering cutting or stopping alcohol use.

While it can feel nice to clean up after winter, there are chores to be done year-round!

Consider creating a chore chart so everyone in the Family knows what needs to be done and who's responsible for doing it. Don’t be afraid to get creative! For instance, create a chart with pictures for younger Family members.

The FOCUS program can help Families with chore charts and many other wonderful skills to help stay on task. Don’t just get by, get stronger!

Get job training with Microsoft Military Program Staff members from the Pierce County Public Library are at McChord and Grandstaff libraries the fourth Wednesday of each month at noon to explain the benefits of the Microsoft Military Program. Pierce County Library staff members are also available from 11 a.m.– noon and 12:30–1:30 p.m. to answer individual questions.

Once you enroll in this free program, you can take Microsoft certification tests for the office specialist and technical assistant certifications. Tests are free and study materials are available. For more information, email mmp@pcls.us.
