What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate.

Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

I began working for Army MWR Child & Youth Services in 1989. With an elementary education and early childhood education background, I never thought I’d find a career working with children in the Army! By happenstance, I ended up applying for an education program specialist position for Army MWR. I fell in love with my job and with military families, and for what MWR stood for. I am blessed to have grown such a great career in MWR and CYS. MWR became my second family as I moved around the Army as a trainer, program director, child care center inspector, CYS coordinator and HQ Army CYS specialist. In 2011, I arrived at JBLM just as it was joint-basing. In the time since then, JBLM CYS (and MWR!) have taken the best of Air Force and Army child care standards and integrated them into what you see today. We found that the Army had more requirements and stricter regulations and the Air Force had great ways to streamline the requirements in the programs. JBLM CYS has the best of all that can be offered to its families through excellent child and youth programs that support the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of children and youth from birth to age 18.

The type of care the military offers recognizes that these kids are in unique situations. I believe we’re providing the foundation of forming tomorrow’s leaders from cradle to adulthood, in partnership with military families. CYS is an important part of mission readiness, and we want to make sure our children and families are taken care of.

Our kids are a unique part of the multifaceted military community at JBLM. We celebrate parents, with whom we partner; we celebrate the consistency and dedication of our staff, and we celebrate the children we serve during Month of the Military Child and all year long!

Attend free Easter Dash Everyone at JBLM is invited to the annual Easter Dash, a free egg hunt at Cowan Stadium Saturday, April 11. Bring your own baskets for each child to collect eggs and visit with the Easter bunny!

Special needs youth with parents can collect eggs at noon.

Ages 3 and younger can collect eggs at 1 p.m., ages 4–7 at 2 and ages 8–11 at 3. Each youth will receive a goody bag no matter how many eggs they collect.

f you’re a golfer at JBLM, you’re gonna love April specials at Eagle’s Pride and Whispering Firs golf courses: • Annual green fees are on sale now! For those who currently have a card, bring in a new annual player and save 10% with your own renewal (restrictions apply; see the pro shop for details).

• Dewsweeper discounts are available weekdays from golf course opening to 8:30 a.m. with $20 green fees. Add a cart for $14 per rider!

ome in and check out our professional silk-screen service at your Arts & Crafts Center! We use modern print techniques for your T-shirts for groups, reunions, unit events and more. We’ll print a minimum of 12 shirts per order.

Your T-shirts will never be boring again!

Step 1 Bring in your logo, insignia or design idea or art to the Arts & Crafts Center. Show us your image file or let us help you design your logo. We can look at your image and give professional advice on how to optimize the look you want.

Step 2 Look at what type and colors of T-shirts you’d like to order.

We have material samples you can feel and decide whether you want cotton, a blend or synthetic cloth, depending on how you’ll use them. For quality control and consistent pricing, we only use T-shirts from our suppliers.

Uniforms, such as unit or squadron T-shirts, are a standard issue from our military supplier.

Step 3 If you want to see a final proof of your image before we print, you can request it while you’re ordering. Once we set up the job and begin printing, changes in colors or design won’t be possible.

Go wild on an ATV Love to ride an ATV? Eligible patrons ages 18 and older can rent ATVs for yourself and your family members and run the ORV Park course at Lewis Main! You’ll be shown a safety video at the Shotgun Shooting Complex and be taught how to ride before you’re allowed on the course.

If you own an ATV or dirt bike and want to ride the course, you’ll need to register your vehicle, comply with all requirements and pay all fees at the Shotgun Shooting Complex.

Fish the day away on JBLM lakes If you love to fish, then JBLM has what you’re looking for with many lakes available for fishing. American Lake offers up rainbow trout, rock bass and yellow perch. Sequalitchew Lake at Lewis North has largemouth bass with the occasional coho salmon. At Lewis Main, choose from Chambers Lake, Lewis Lake, Cat Lake, Fianders Lake and the many marshes located in the training areas. If you need to buy fishing supplies, such as bait and tackle, or rent fishing poles, get them at Russell Landing Marina at Lewis North (at the end of American Lake Avenue).

You also can rent motorboats, canoes, fishing rods and reels, fishing nets and hip boots from the Northwest Adventure Center (Lewis North) or Adventures Unlimited (McChord Field). Find rentals available at each location at JBLModr.com.

Shoot at the ranges Enjoy one of three outdoor ranges at Lewis Main if you’re a shotgun, pistol or archery shooting enthusiast.

The Shotgun Shooting Complex has a standard five ranges with a sixth for fivestand shooting. You can shoot skeet, trap and wobble skeet from a 60-foot duck tower.

Monthly 100-target sporting clays events are held all year. Instructional shooting is available if you’re new to the sport or want to improve your aim. Rental guns are available and shooting supplies are available for purchase.

The range is located at 3969 2nd Division Range Rd. just outside the Scouts Out gate.

The Archery Range is open to long-bow, compound and traditional shooters and is adjacent to the Shotgun Shooting Complex. It offers four static archery lanes with 10-, 20-, 30- and 40-yard distances with aero-archery targets.

The Rifle & Pistol Range (Range 15) is located at 0015 East Gate Road at Lewis Main. This range is a safe, relaxing place to perfect your markesmanship. Pistol shooters can take advantage of 10- and 20-yard berms, while rifle shooters can shoot at targets to 300 yards. All shooters are invited to try action

targets, available on request starting at 100 yards. Call 253-967-9803 for more information.

Take a scuba diving course JBLM offers the only world-class five-star PADI-IDC-rated scuba diving course in the military. You also won’t find a better price for learning basic skills or taking more advanced courses, either. Once you earn your scuba certification here, you can scuba dive an where in the world!

All beginners learn your skills in the pool.

Safety’s a priority, so you won’t be let out of the pool until you master all your basic scuba skills.

Once you’re comfortable with your newfound skills, you’ll be taken to a local beach for your final dives before being awarded your certif cation. You’ll see some incredible underwater wildlife during your open-water dives, so be prepared to be amazed!

Learn to golf with resident pro John Eisentrout is the resident golf instructor at JBLM golf courses. He can help you sharpen your swing to improve your score, or get you started in the sport of golf.

With kids who are just learning how to golf, John focuses on making the game fun and improving athletic skills, such as hand-eye coordination and sequencing. His goal is to avoid injury through repetitive motion and to equip them with athleticism that can carry over into other sports they may experience as they grow up.

With older adults, John might focus on freeing up their bodies that may have lost flexibility so they can once again have full range of motion to successfully improve their game.

It’s about managing expectations and giving students a genuine sense of accomplishment, according to John.

Find resilience through WAQ

By Lizzie Hoscheit omething that is a guarantee for all Service members is dealing with high-intensity and high-stress situations, whether they occur throughout the work day, at a training center or on a deployment.

Finding a balance between these high-pressure situations and time spent out of uniform can be difficult for anyone.

Military suicide rates are the highest they’ve been since the DOD began tracking military suicides in 2001. This is one of the reasons why Warrior Adventure Quest was created as a mental reset tool.

WAQ’s purposeful design diffuses stress WAQ is designed to relieve some of the pressure and to help Service members decipher the feelings that come with being under extreme stress, especially surrounding a deployment and before a redeployment.

Participation in the WAQ program takes place over one duty day and is a requirement for units to complete every two years.

It’s also DA-funded and encouraged due to the positive benefits that come from the program.

The goal is to mitigate high-risk behaviors and transition these potentially dangerous actions into more positive outlets through high-adrenaline activities matched with a debrief. WAQ uses recreation to help Service members make connections between the struggles they may be facing mentally with realworld experiences.

WAQ program available through ODR JBLM has a new WAQ coordinator, Luna Jaipsa, who became passionate about recreation, and the WAQ program specifically, after she read a short description of it in one of her college textbooks. Since then she has spent her time learning and experiencing all there is to know about WAQ and recreation.

When asked why the WAQ program is important, Luna says, “It’s for you this time, not for anyone else.” She understands that one of the sacrifices Service members make is knowing that so many other things — the mission and unit — come before the individual.

Luna explains, “That, in some ways, is why the WAQ program exists. While it’s there to act as team building for the unit, it also acts as

a tool for personal building, and it’s more than just checking off a box, it’s checking in with yourself.”

JBLM’s current WAQ adventure trips include rafting, paintball, indoor and outdoor rock climbing, skeet shooting, mountain biking, backcountry skiing and kayaking. These trips are chosen because they have the ability to simulate high adrenaline and intense emotions at similar levels to what a Service member may face on a deployment.

Take a mental break WAQ leaders use these adventure trips to allow the Service member a mental break.

The adventure trips are chosen to be something you can build on after you complete the WAQ program. This allows you to push yourself at your own pace and decide how much you want to challenge yourself.

Luna says, “These forms of recreation are more than just space fillers or a way to pass time — you get to have a different experience and result each and every time you do them.”

Training a trainer Before a unit is able to go through the WAQ program, someone within the unit, most commonly an NCO, needs to become certified.

To get certified, contact the ODR staff or your commander. The trainee takes Leader AfterAction Debrief training with one of the ODR staff during a duty day for less than two hours.

It’s important to remember the goal of WAQ and that it’s here for Service members as individuals, helping them through challenges they may be experiencing in their daily lives.

Prizes will be awarded for top team, unit/ squadron and single in class.

The cost per registrant is $25, which includes one round each of five-stand, trap and skeet. Firearms will be available on the field for those who don’t own a shotgun.

You can compete as an individual and/or as a team. Teams compete as a unit/squadron or any group of 3–5 shooters. Individuals compete in one of the following classes: • Novice for those who have never shot or have shot only a few times.

• Intermediate for those who shoot recreationally on occasion.

• Experienced for those who shoot frequently or competitively.

Register by Sunday, April 19 at the Shotgun Shooting Complex.

Constant change can build resiliency, respect for others

By Cindy Arnold hen reflecting on the life of a military child, the word “change” is often one of the first things that comes to my mind. My father was in the Air Force for 20 years, and I always like to say that my mother was, too — she supported him and two children during all the moves and change that occurred.

This year’s Month of the Military Child theme — “adapting today for a stronger tomorrow” — is exactly what every military Family learns, that military kids: • Learn that things change and that’s OK. • Find that moving can be fun and you learn a lot each time.

• Can respect diversity and difference.

• Discover that constant change builds resiliency, new friends, new schools, new — everything!

This resiliency creates tools for building your new life each time, and all of these challenges help you gain insight into who you are.

As you become an adult, you’ll find these skills that you cultivated as a child are invaluable. I know that I have.

Kindergarten, here we come!

F

or those new to JBLM or to the school system, here are some frequently asked questions that the School Support Services office receives about kindergarten enrollment.

At what age can my child start school?

In Washington, a child must be 5 on or before August 31 to attend kindergarten, unless they have attended kindergarten in another state that permits earlier entrance.

Where will my child attend school?

Your child(ren) will attend schools in the district in which they are zoned. This is a boundary state — the address where you reside has a school and school district associated with it.

On-base schools are part of the Clover Park School District public school system.

Can my child attend on-base schools if we live off-base?

Receiving a waiver is dependent on the space and services available in one of the on-base schools for the grade(s) you need. If the waiver is approved, the parent is responsible for transportation and the requirements of the waiver.

To apply for a waiver, parents must go to their resident district to obtain a Release of Attendance. After parents of the student have secured a Release of Attendance, they should take that form to the school they would like their student to attend and fill out an application for the waiver. If the waiver is approved, the parent will complete enrollment paperwork at the school.

Clover Park School District is currently accepting application for waivers for the 2020–2021 school year. For more information regarding waivers, contact their district office

How do I enroll my child in school?

Enrollment is handled at the local level.

You’ll register at the school in which you are zoned. You’ll need to refer to the individual school district’s website for more information.

Is before- & after-school care available on & off base?

Child & Youth Services provides on-base before- and after-school programs from kindergarten through fifth grade in the School Age Centers.

There are three SACs at JBLM: Lewis North SAC, Cascade SAC (Lewis Main) and McChord SAC. Each elementary school on the installation is assigned to a SAC. For more information, contact Parent Central Services at 253-966-2977.

Inquire at your assigned school for off-base options or contact the School Support Services office at 253-967-7195 for more information.

Most school districts have before- and afterschool programs available either in or near the individual school or in the surrounding area.

Some programs transport and some programs have hours conducive to the military schedule.

Consider that issue when selecting a place to live and before signing a contract.

What if my child is already in a CDC for Strong Beginnings?

If you are currently enrolled in a CYS Child Development Center, will be attending school at JBLM and need before- and after-school programs, please notify the front office at the CDC and provide the name of the school at JBLM that your child will be attending. The office will assist you with enrollment at the corresponding SAC.

• Kinder-Ready Storytime that meets 10:30– 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday, developing essential skills to prepare children ages 3–5 for kindergarten.

• An all-ages family storytime and craft that meets 3:30–4:30 p.m. each Wednesday.

Bring kiddos to storytime Bring your prereaders to McChord Library Thursdays at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a storytime with free crafts and activities!

Join adult book clubs Take part in Novel Navigators book club Join the Novel Navigators book discussion group for adults that meets the second Wednesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. at McChord Library (except during spring break).

This month’s meeting is April 15 to discuss “The Sisters Brothers,” by Patrick DeWitt. A limited number of copies are available; register in person to receive a copy.

Attend Afterthought book club Come to Grandstaff Library on the third Monday of every month for our Afterthought adult book club. We’re exploring books from all genres and discovering new books to enjoy in this all-inclusive book club.

Check out your book (ask at the front desk) and plan to join us April 20, 5:30–7 p.m. in the conference room to discuss “The Last Time I Lied” by Riley Sager.

Attend clubs for fun Teen Filmmakers Production Crew Youth ages 11 and older can join the McChord Teen Film Production Crew at McChord Library! We meet Mondays at 4 p.m. to learn the art of filmmaking and creating our own independent short films step by step. Just drop in!

Create at BYOU teen girls’ club Spend a girl-fueled power hour of creativity and awesome nosh at the Be Your Own You teen girls’ club 4–5 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at Book Patch Library. This month, we’ll meet April 7 to design your own butterfly picture frame!

Club activities for boys & girls Book Patch Library invites you to monthly clubs with fun activities to help build confidence, creativity and friendships 4–5 p.m.: • SuperGirls Club meets the second Tuesday of the month.

Girls ages 7–11 can join us April 14 to design your own wind chimes!

• Mudspots & Robots Boys Club is open to boys of all ages the third Tuesday of the month. Have fun decorating your own wooden movable lizard April 21!

More library fun Get STEAMed Ages 6 and older can participate in Grandstaff Library’s free STEAM program with science, technology, engineering, arts and math. We meet 4–5 p.m. the first Thursday of the month.

This month, we meet Friday, April 17 starting at 4 p.m. and enter into a world of unlimited imagination. The program is geared toward ages 8 and older (ages 6–7 also can participate with a parent or guardian).
