Perform at your best! Learn how sleep, activity and nutrition can positively influence your child's school performance!

Summer is a great time to relax, connect and keep your children healthy and fit! It’s also a time to help your children stay engaged in activities they love, explore new things and create new habits. Before you know it, everyone will be preparing for the new school year. The Performance Triad combines Sleep, Activity and Nutrition to help you perform at your very best — in school, at work, at home and everywhere in between! Practicing the Performance Triad as a Family will help you work toward your goals for healthy living, while also teaching your children healthy habits that will follow them into adulthood. Build a strong and happy Family! Take advantage of long summer days and cool evening temps with a walk on the waterfront.

Get the Facts! BEHAVIOR • We can all move more throughout the day! Encourage your child to get 60 minutes or more of play and activity during the day. This reduces stress and anxiety in children. Well-rested children are just more fun to be around! They tend to cooperate more, have better control over their emotions and are typically more motivated throughout the day. Sleep contributes to their ability to pay attention more and therefore they’re able to do better in school.

early age have lower rates of injury, better bone health and are less likely to become overweight or obese as adults. • Putting your children to bed on time at night so they get enough sleep benefits everyone! You get a little more time to yourself and they get more sleep and positive benefits to their mental, emotional and physical growth and development.

• Take the time to help kick-start your children’s day with a healthy breakfast. A good breakfast can improve their mood and attitude and help them to stay focused in class longer.

• We know sleep-deprived children are at higher risk for being overweight or obese. Not convinced? Without enough sleep, it’s harder for children to produce enough of the hormones they need to promote normal growth and it takes longer for cuts and bruises to heal!

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE • It feels good to do well in school. Did you know that children who are more active score better on tests and get better grades? Help your children choose some fun activities and have them choose an activity where they have to be active for at least 60 minutes every day! This equals about 11,000 to 13,000 steps a day and can also improve their grades! • Did you know that children who get the right amount of sleep for their age, tend to do better academically? Their mood, balance and coordination are generally better, they think more clearly and remember things better, too! • Providing your children with good nutrition supports their ability to think and learn. The USDA’s “MyPlate” is a great resource to achieve this goal. http://www.choosemyplate.gov/

Meet the JBLM yoga and power yoga instructors After practicing yoga for 15 years, Ali became a yoga instructor in 2013, thanks to the encouragement of friends and her yoga instructor. She’s been serving the JBLM community for almost three years as a volunteer instructor. Ali’s love for yoga and the military community is truly felt during her yoga classes. When not teaching yoga, she participates in other group fitness classes, still finding joy in being a student and supporting other volunteers when opportunities allow.

Birgit started yoga as a participant in a Jensen yoga class nine years ago. “When the last teacher moved, I was put before the choice of coming out of my shell and teaching yoga or facing the class would go away. Since yoga keeps me sane and happy, I chose to save the world from my grumpiness,” she says. Birgit has been teaching twice a week ever since and enjoys the diversity of the people who come to class. She hopes that “yoga helps them as much as it does me to navigate the ups and downs of life.” Carol started practicing yoga more than 15 years ago alongside NFL players, extreme athletes and professional dancers in NYC. Carol offers students the foundations of a strong physical practice: alignment for power, muscle integration to prevent/ recover from injuries and core for balance and agility. Her power yoga classes are about finding your edge with a masterful blend of artful alignment and attention cues for your body, mind and heart. After serving 10 years as an active duty Medical Sergeant/EMT, Preston found peace and belonging in practicing yoga. As a JBLM volunteer yoga instructor, he loves serving the military community with deep empathy from his path and from what he studied. His yoga practice includes Yin, Vinyasa, Inversions and Acro. He believes, “A path walked is better than the map.”

HEAD TO FREEDOM PARK    FOR SUMMER FUN

Skateboarders compete in inaugural JBLM Skate Jam Freedom Park offers the JBLM community a place to cool off (splash park), play (ADA-accessible playground) and throw tricks (skate plaza). JBLM’s one-of-a-kind skate plaza has been open to skaters and trick bikers for nearly four years. Earlier this summer, the plaza saw 50 skaters compete in the inaugural JBLM Skate Jam, hosted by Rhythm Ride Shop and Family & MWR (results below). The skate plaza — while a Family-friendly location — is open to everyone, whether you’re a 7-year-old wanting to skate like big brother, a teen or a Service Member. The plaza’s on Liggett Avenue, adjacent to Photos by Staff Sgt. Micah VanDyke | 19th Public Affairs Detachment Bowl Arena Lanes at Lewis Main, and is currently open from 5 a.m.–10:30 p.m. Lights for safer skating turn off automatically. Making a difference at JBLM It’s not too early to start thinking about a “Make a Difference Day” project! Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others. Held annually on the fourth Saturday in October, millions of Americans are rallied into a single day of action to help change the world. Share your community spirit at JBLM by getting your unit, organization and/or coworkers involved in Make a Difference Day scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24. Everyone can participate. Find a need in your community and use the power of Make a Difference Day to mobilize your Family, your neighbors or your entire community into a day of action! For more information, call the Installation Volunteer Corps Program Manager at 253-967-2324.

Earn promotion points with AFCS classes! Soldiers (with ranks of E-4 and E-5) have the opportunity to earn promotion points by attending certain Armed Forces Community Service classes. Classes in-

clude, but are not limited to, the Family Advocacy Program’s New Parent Support Program parenting classes, Financial Readiness Program classes (excluding required classes for first-termers), Mobilization & Deployment (including FRG) classes and workshops, Armed Forces Family Team Building Military Knowledge and Personal Growth, Resiliency and Leadership Classes, as well as Army Family Team Building Levels I–III (available at MyArmyOneSource.com). For specific guidance, visit Army Regulation (AR) 600-8-19, para. 3-18.b.(4) and AR 350-1, para. 4.14.c. Some restrictions apply: You must have a DA Form 87 or a local certificate of training signed by a LTC/GS-13 or higher. You can’t receive points for classes that are mandated for you to take (i.e., mandatory FAP/NPSP or financial classes). For additional information, call 253-967-7166.

Get to know us, learn about programs and services at the AFCS Roadshow As a joint base, some of our services and programs bear different names than you might be accustomed to if you’re from a traditional Army or Air Force installation. Armed Forces Community Service is such an example. If you have an Army background, you might be familiar with Army Community Service. If you’re from an Air Force installation, you’re probably familiar with the Airman & Family Readiness Center. AFCS is combination of both Army and AF Family programs and resources. Recognizing that AFCS is an unfamiliar name, we’re embarking on a year-long awareness campaign to educate Service Members, Family members, retirees, veterans, DOD civilians and community partners (at and outside JBLM) about our programs and resources. We plan to conduct unit briefings, host some “pop-up” events at Lewis Main, Lewis North and McChord Field and more. We’re kicking off our “AFCS Roadshow” this month — follow us on fb.com/JBLMafcs to see where we’ll be hosting events and doing some fun stuff!
