Opening the new school year How to plan for the new school year in light of the pandemic By Norma Melo, JBLM School Liaison Officer ublic and private schools are busy preparing their plans to reopen their schools for the ‘20–’21 school year. Schools must follow the Department of Health guidelines, and they’re busy finding solutions to ensure that all children and staff are going to be safe as well as able to gather within social distancing parameters. There are many areas that must be reviewed — transportation, gathering protocols, transitions during the day, meal times, clubs and activities just to name a few. We encourage you to regularly check your school district website or school Facebook page to keep up to date on what’s occurring. If you’re new to JBLM, you must register online at your school’s website and upload the information they request directly onto the registration page. Some information you’ll need are proof of residence (housing contract), immunization records, birth certificate for kindergarten students and report cards or school records from your child’s former school. Once you’ve registered, the school will begin sending you information about the new school year and what the next steps are, if they’re going to hold an in-person meeting with new families and teachers and other details. Please keep in mind that not all schools will follow the same procedures due to spacing and enrollment numbers. Many schools are not accepting waivers into schools, so please have an alternate plan ready to implement.

Start a home business as a child care provider L

ooking for a fun and rewarding home business? If you live on base at JBLM, become a Family Child Care provider and make a difference in the lives of military children and their families. FCC providers earn up to $2,000 a month, may qualify for subsidies and receive free resources for your business. Learn about FCC at the monthly evening orientations at the FCC office (no children allowed at the orientation due to space/discussion topics). Full-day training classes will meet weekdays following the orientation. All classes are required for FCC certification. FCC has unique qualities that make it a preferred choice for many families. It offers flexible hours — full-day, part-day, extended or overnight, weekend and hourly care in a comfortable home setting. FCC providers are vetted and only the bestqualified candidates are recommended for certification. Providers must complete background checks and regular home inspections as a part of certification. They also receive paid ongoing training for professional development.

New $1,000 incentives We’re offering two new bonuses to qualified FCC providers:

8

Relocation Bonus: Up to a $1,000 relocation bonus will be provided to FCC providers who successfully relocate their home business to a gaining installation. Providers will receive payments over a 12-month period. Payments will begin upon home certification and enrollment of at least two children who are unrelated to the provider. Payments will be disbursed monthly with an initial payment of $120 and $80 thereafter (for the next 11 months). If the home closes or certification is lost during this time, all remaining payments will be forfeited. Recruitment Bonus: Up to a $1,000 recruitment bonus will be provided to FCC providers who successfully open their homes. This is a one-time incentive. The FCC Office is at 2013B 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) at Lewis Main. Questions? Call 253-967-3039.

Single Service members belong Spend off-duty hours engaging in service & fun with BOSS

By Lizzie Hoscheit etter Opportunities for Single Service members is a program that plays an integral part in the lives of single Service members here at JBLM, both Soldiers and Airmen. The main goal is to provide opportunities for community service, recreation and leisure activities and to improve their overall quality of life. JBLM has recently acquired a new BOSS president, Spc. Kyle Seymour. He hit the ground running to improve the BOSS program as well as assist our single Service members. Kyle describes being the BOSS president as fulfilling, and he carries the importance of the job with pride. While his days start with working out at McVeigh Ftiness Center before grabbing breakfast, they continue to the real work of planning volunteer opportunities, events on base and researching off-base events. When asked about his position, Kyle states, “One of the primary duties as the BOSS president is to be the voice of the single Service member. Being a joint base, I have the pleasure of representing both Soldiers and Airmen. As BOSS president, it’s my duty to make sure the quality of life for single Soldiers and Airmen is the best it can be.” Kyle says he has learned a lot about himself

B

and improved certain skills since becoming BOSS president. For example, he says he has become better at managing assigned tasks, learning the benefits of social media and properly using social media as a communication tool. Kyle believes that the program has the potential to become the best BOSS program the U.S. Army has ever seen. Given our location, we have extensive options for outdoor activities as well as being surrounded by cities that are constantly putting on events that single Service members would love to attend. “The BOSS community is here to act as your family away from home,” Kyle states. “Most single Service members have just left home for the first time and are coming to a place they may have never been before. The BOSS program provides that stable ground for those service members, to help connect you with other Service members in similar situations and provide a variety of entertainment, from outdoor adventures to eSports tournaments. All BOSS events are thrilling and allow you to do something that you may have never had the opportunity to do, as well as build longlasting friendships.” When asked about the importance of the

Did you know?

Lional Kam

BOSS program, Kyle says, “It has the ability to change a Service member’s view on the military. A lot of Service members don’t realize what BOSS truly is, and as an organization, we’re here to assist and make the life of a Single service member better. Ultimately, as president, it’s my duty to be the voice of the Single service member. If a Service member has an idea about an event or quality-of-life concerns, we want to hear about them.” When you consider your plans throughout the week or what to do on an upcoming weekend, check out what BOSS has going on, and maybe you’ll not only go on an adventure, you’ll make new friends or discover something about yourself. Get in touch with JBLM BOSS at fb.com/JBLMBOSSteam or call the BOSS office at 253-967-5636.

The BOSS program originated in 1989 as Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, to respond to the recreational needs of single Soldiers between 18 and 25 who make up 35% of the Army. As the program was implemented, it became evident that quality of life was the primary concern of single Soldiers. In 1991, the Chief of Staff of the Army officially expanded BOSS to include all aspects of Soldiers’ lives. Some BOSS members then began to express an interest in participating in community service projects, which was added as a component of the program. In 2010, Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base merged to become Joint Base Lewis-McChord. An aspect of this merger was to encourage Airmen to participate in the BOSS program, and BOSS was renamed to include Airmen.

Sharpen your swing with resident golf pro By Patti Jeffrey eet John Eisentrout, resident pro at JBLM golf courses. He’s at your service to help you improve your game. John became a golf pro in 2011 and has played on the NGA (Hooters), National Pro, Mackenzie, Golden State and Gateway and Web.com tours. “Golf is a variable and demanding sport to master,” John says. “You can’t control what happens a lot of the time, so what I want to do with my students is make it fun and allow them to master little successes before I take them further down the road. Success makes students want to come back, and if I can get them hooked on golf, that’s my success.”

M

John first became hooked on golf after he took The First Tee golf lessons when he was 16 years old. He found that the program taught good character development with groups of youth. From that and many other golf experiences, he knows how to instruct golfers as young as age 3 and as old as age 89. “I’m flexible in my approach to teaching,” says John. “I interview players on what their goals are. Some only want to improve one skill because they have limited time. Others want to become better scratch players and are willing to spend as much time as they can to get to their goal.” With kids, John focuses on making the game fun and improving athletic skills, such as hand-eye coordination and sequencing. His goal is to avoid injury through repetitive motion and to equip them with athleticism that can carry over into other sports they may experience as they grow up. With older adults, John might focus on freeing up their bodies that may have lost flexibility so they can once again have full range of motion to successfully improve their game. It’s about managing expectations and giving students a genuine sense of accomplishment, according to John. “For instance, 90 percent of new golfers never shoot 90 or better — if you’re a beginner and I can get you to break 90, you’re a success. I focus on playing well and developing you as a golfer.” When John came to JBLM to teach, he was pleasantly surprised with JBLM Service member students. “I find military students easier to teach — they take instruction well and practice what I assign in between sessions,” John says. Their attitude goes well with his mission to inspire beginner golfers in a program that grows skills, builds character and increases mental toughness. rom our summer Facebook series of Chow! cooking classes with Kelley Thomas, McChord Club manager and chef extraordinaire, we’ve printed a few recipes for you to try out at home. If you’d rather order some of Kelley’s delightful dishes, turn back a page to the Club’s orders to-go with a different ethnic dish each month! Kelley says, “I first started working for MWR as a chef overseas in Germany. What started as a 13-month tour working, traveling and living a culinary adventure has turned into an 18-year career. “As manager at McChord Club, I’m loving every moment conjuring up culinary delights and still serving those who serve!” We hope you enjoy Kelley’s recipes!

Watermelon & arugula salad Make 6 servings • 1/2 pound baby arugula leaves • 2 pounds seedless watermelon (3/4-inch-diced, 3 pounds with the rind) • 1/3 cup olive oil • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar • 2 jalapeños (charred, de-seeded and diced) • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground) • 1/2 pound chunk coquito cheese (queso fresco) 1. Whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, jalapeños, salt and pepper. Slowly pour in the olive oil, whisking constantly, to form an emulsion. If not using within an hour, store the vinaigrette covered in the refrigerator. 2. Place the watermelon, arugula and queso fresco in a large bowl. Drizzle with enough vinaigrette to coat the greens lightly and toss well. Taste for

seasonings and serve immediately. 3. Wait to toss the salad till serving; the dressing will slowly seep to the bottom of the bowl making a nice coating on the watermelon. Toss well, then adjust seasonings.

CYS provided 1,620 hours of care in nine weeks.

Bowl Arena Lanes’ snack bar, Battle Bean at the Castle, Habañero Mexican Grill and Eagle’s Pride restaurant remained open and offered to-go orders. Northwest Adventure Center crew kept the campgrounds open for families who were calling it home due to PCS limbo.

Each month, hear what different JBLM Service members, family members, civilians and others like to do in their spare time.

Spc. Kyle Seymour, BOSS president Last thing you ate:

Last song you listened to:

I typically eat the same breakfast every day. I normally get an omelet with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese. Then I wrap it in a spinach wrap!

The majority of my music choice is country music. Hence, my go-to song that I normally listen to right when I get into my car is called “My Kinda Livin’” (featuring Hunter Phelps and Jameson Rodgers) by HARDY.

Last time you tried something new: Last October, I was out at my friend’s cabin and we were oyster fishing. I tried an oyster right out of the ocean. It was surprisingly extremely tasteful. Last adventure you went on: Two weekends ago, I went to the Green River Gorge. The trail that I went on was called the Franklin Ghost Town & Coal Mine Trailhead. (Note: Be mindful of physical distancing.)

Last time you laughed: I laugh a good majority of every day. Life is too short not to laugh through the lows and highs. Even if my day is going bad, I try to laugh through it. Everything can always be worse off. Having a positive mindset in life helps me get through the days.
