xcitement filled the Eagle’s Pride Golf Course, as the JBLM community gathered to watch Randy Mulder win Guy’s Grocery Game’s Thanksgiving Grocery Trot special. Mulder, manager and chef of the Bistro at Russell Landing, competed alongside four other chefs on the reality show hosted by the Food Network’s Guy Fieri. Col. H. Charles Hodges, the JBLM commander, opened the viewing party by presenting Mulder with the Irving Rubenstein Memorial Award. The award, given out by the International Military Communities Executive Association, recognizes one outstanding DFMWR services professional from each of the five branches of the Armed Forces who has been in a management position. As the winning chef of the competition, Mulder took home $18,000. “I’m donating half of what I’ve earned to the Wounded Warrior Project, just to give back and as a thank-you to the military community,” says Mulder. Mulder states that the experience has opened a lot of doors for him and his community. “Not only is it a good thing for me, but it also sheds a good light on the military in general,” he says.

W
ant to have fun in mountain snow, cut down a Christmas tree from a national park, go snowshoeing or tubing for the day or just go winter sightseeing? Avoid potential catastrophe with these seven essential steps.
1. Winterize your vehicle before you drive into freezing weather. You can prepare your vehicle for winter easily and cheaply when you sign up for a basic car-care class at your Family & MWR Auto Center at McChord Field. Thomas Graves, lead mechanic at McChord Field, says, “For $20, we cover oil change, fluids, lubrications, tire pressure and coolant in-depth. We also give students a maintenance schedule with detailed diagrams to know what to do before, during and after maintenance.” Your vehicle’s condition is vital for winter travel. Also look at the condition of your belts, hoses, radiator, lights, brakes, heater/defroster and wiper blades. Keep your fuel tank full and make sure the car battery is fully charged. 2. Carry winter supplies for your trip or outing in the snow. To prevent getting stuck somewhere in the cold, carry a quart of oil and transmission fluid, 50-50 mix of antifreeze, paper towels and a portable air pump for emergencies. In snow, you’ll need some road salt or sand, a tow chain or rope, emergency flares, a fluorescent distress flag, jumper cables and a flashlight with extra batteries. Always keep the 10 winter essentials in your vehicle in a backpack for taking with you when you leave the car. 12
Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • December 2014
The 10 essentials of trekking outdoors are different in winter. When you’re outdoors, clothing is different, too. At the least, wear synthetic layers of clothing and a puffy outer jacket and pants layer. You can buy these essentials for about $50 — they could save your life: • Navigation map and compass. Navigation may be more difficult on snowy trails, so carry backup navigation, such as a compass. If you’re relying on GPS, remember that cold weather drains batteries. • Sun protection (sunglasses and sunscreen for blinding light on sunny snow). • Insulation — extra clothing, plus extra wool or synthetic socks, hat and gloves to replace wet ones. • Illumination (headlamp/flashlight). • First-aid supplies. • Fire — making a fire in snow only melts down the snowpack, so pack a liquid fuel stove and a lighter to warm liquid or food when outdoors. • Repair kit and tools — a multitool and duct tape at the minimum for patching a broken snowshoe or other gear. • Nutrition (extra food). • Hydration (extra water). For safety’s sake, don’t eat snow. It brings down your body temperature and it isn’t sanitary. • Emergency shelter: ultralight tarp, a bivy sack, an emergency space blanket (which packs small and weighs just ounces), even a large plastic trash bag. • Portable shovel. As a reminder, dogs are generally not allowed for safety reasons in national and state parks’ snowshoe trails. 3. When you go over a mountain pass or into national parks, you’re required to carry chains for your two-wheel drive vehicle. National
park rangers are authorized to issue you a ticket if your vehicle is randomly inspected and you aren’t carrying chains. So, how do you buy the right chains? Robert Conrad, outdoor recreation specialist at the Northwest Adventure Center, says, “Cable chains are recommended for cars with two-wheel drive. Read the description on the package before you buy so you get the right size and kind for your vehicle. Also practice putting on and taking off your new chains before you need them so you don’t spend unnecessary time on the cold, slushy and snowy ground figuring it out.” Conrad recommends you hang up your chains to dry rather than storing wet chains in your trunk that tend to rust. He also says you can opt for studded tires during winter months for mountain travel. If you have snow tires and want to put them on your vehicle, rent a tire-changing station at your Family & MWR Auto Center at either Lewis Main or McChord Field. The rental space is inexpensive and you can work in total warmth and light. Tools are free and staff members are willing to give you instructions and tips. 4. Know where you’re going and what the mountain conditions are before you set out for the day. Avalanches and accidents that close roads happen frequently in winter. If you carry a smart phone, download the WSDOT app (wsdot.wa.gov/Inform/mobile.htm) that can alert you to closures and changing road conditions. Want to go to the backcountry to cut down your Christmas tree? All of the national forests in Washington allow Christmas tree cutting with a permit through Wednesday, Dec. 24. Find a national forest at www.fs.fed.us.
If you want to cut a tree down at a Washington State Sno-Park, you’ll need to have a Sno-Park pass. Visit parks. wa.gov/452/Non-Motorized-Sno-Parks for the location of state Sno-Parks and to get a pass. Like snowshoeing? You can enter a national park for free if you’re in the military. Most ski resorts in the USDA Forest Service area also have free parking. Remember to approach anywhere you go in the backcountry with caution. Conrad says, “Be sure to stay on the marked trails, pay attention to signs and talk to a park ranger if you can — conditions change often and the more knowledge you have about where you’re headed, the better.” For more information on snowshoeing, visit wta.org. Check out trails and permits at parks.wa.gov/winter/trails. Now that you’re prepared, go enjoy everything the Pacific Northwest backwoods and mountains have to offer! Information compiled from REI.com, WTA.org, FEMA.gov and JBLM’s Family & MWR Outdoor Recreation and Auto Center programs.

to life the story of one of the most celebrated dogs of the 20th century. Weaving the harrowing account of the Yankee Division’s service in World War I with the very human story of a man and his dog, Bausum puts you in the trenches and on the front lines. eet your health and wellness goals with help from the Armed Forces Wellness Center at JBLM. Whether you want to lose weight, control your blood pressure or increase your run time, the AFWC has the equipment and knowledge to help you be your best. Services are free and available to DOD ID card holders at least 18 years old. Your first appointment checks body composition with the BOD POD, a system that monitors small changes in fat and lean muscle mass using air displacement (it’s 99.4 percent accurate). Follow-up appointments are encouraged to determine fat loss and muscle gain — you can’t get this information from your bathroom scale! Next, we test your resting metabolic rate to determine your specific calorie recommendations. The “Upping Your Metabolism” class that follows focuses on healthy nutrition, after which a one-onone consultation gives you specific ideas on how to change your diet and activity
