ing and mountaineering on glaciers and in weather and temperature conditions similar to Alaska and the Himalayas. After a day of technical training, begin the ascent to Camp Muir where you’ll use the mountain hut as base while learning mountaineering skills oriented toward cold weather, high altitude expedition climbing, avalanche forecasting and avalanche rescue. If weather and climbing conditions allow, the group will make a summit attempt via the Ingraham Glacier as the culmination of the winter mountaineering experience. Trees for Troops: Delivering the spirit of Christmas to military Families — one Christmas tree at a time. Trees for Troops is back at JBLM starting Saturday, Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. for E-5 and below! Stay tuned to JBLMmwr.com and fb.com/JBLMmwr for details. What is Trees for Troops?

For many years, Christmas tree growers have been providing free trees for charitable purposes. In the 1990s, some organized efforts started through which trees were given to National Guard units and other military personnel who were deployed in peacekeeping efforts in Kosovo and other regions of the world. In 2005, the National Christmas Tree Association developed the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization to advance the spirit of Christmas year-round. The foundation quickly developed plans for a national Trees for Troops program to unify the individual programs of tree growers and state Christmas tree associations.

Winter photography

Winter is a special time at Mount Rainier National Park! The rewards are many for photographers in pursuit of dramatic compositions. In this Sunday, Jan. 8 workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to make winter images from a variety of locations, exploring different compositional methods. Bring camera, tripod and extra batteries.

resiliency tip of the month

Making the holidays extra special The holiday season is fast-approaching. Parents are busy making holiday preparations and children are busy making lists. During the rush of this holiday season, remember to take notice of the people around us and those we love. This means shifting our focus from shopping to spending time together, sharing memories of the past and making memories for the future. Fostering Family rituals and traditions can make the holidays especially meaningful for both parents and children. If a parent is away, Family rituals can also provide closeness and consistency that’s important for children of all ages. If you’d like more ideas for enhancing Family closeness and support throughout the year, please contact the Families OverComing Under Stress Project. The FOCUS program works with Families just like yours to teach skills that help you be more successful and make the most of seasonal changes. FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For additional information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org. By Rick DeChaineau AFC®, CFP® Armed Forces Community Service Financial Counselor

Did you have trouble getting a car loan when you graduated from high school? Or you were able to get a loan but the interest rate was very high? You can give your kid(s) a leg-up on this challenge. Of the five factors used to compute your FICO credit score: • Payment history — do you pay on time? — makes up 35 percent. • Amounts owed — how much of your available credit you’re using — at 30 percent. • Length of credit history — how long have you had credit a counts — is 15 percent. • New credit — how many times you have recently applied for credit — is 10 percent. • Types of credit — car loan, credit card, home loan, etc. — is 10 percent. For many credit cards, making your child (as young as possible) an “authorized user” on your account will start to build their credit history even though you do not give your child a card. Adding them to your account will begin their credit history. Doing this for a child at six months of age will give them almost 18 years of credit “history” by high school graduation! They will also benefit from your ensuring all card payments are made on time and balances are kept at low or zero (pay the card off every month). These steps will be especially important as they approach the age to apply for credit on their own. A word of caution: If you fail to wisely manage credit, your child will not be able to get good interest rates or loans! However, if you stay on track the end result will be your child more easily qualifying for loans, credit cards, etc., — with better interest rates — as they start their life as an adult. By helping them with on-time payments (avoiding late fees) and keeping zero or low balances (which means you pay little or no interest) it’s great for your credit — the icing on the cake!
