on’t be caught in the cold when it comes to vehicle safety this winter. The seasoned experts at your Auto Centers at Lewis Main and McChord are ready to help you get your vehicle in good shape for cold weather. Here are quick tips on how to winterize your vehicle and be prepared for winter travel. • It’s critical to check your fluids no matter what season it is. Make sure your vehicle has adequate antifreeze, even if it’s not being used. Your engine block is in danger of freezing and cracking (an expensive repair) without antifreeze to protect it. Use all-season oil, which won’t get thick in colder temperatures. Most new cars use 5W/20 or 5W/30. Check to see if your windshield washer is formulated for winter temperatures. Even window-washing solutions have some antifreeze to prevent your windshield from icing up. Remember to check your transmission and brake fluid levels before you go on any trip. • Check your wiper blades to see if they
10
Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus December 2017
are proper for winter use. Some blades can freeze and become rigid rather than remain flexible. • Make certain your tire pressure is adjusted for cold weather. Tire pressures are naturally higher in warm temperatures and lower in cold temperatures. Underinflated tires wear out more quickly. Also check your spare tire for proper air pressure and ensure that you have a jack and tools needed to change the tire in case of a flat. • Speaking of tires, buy good all-season tires that wear well in both summer and winter. • Get your battery and battery cables serviced. You wouldn’t want to get stuck somewhere in freezing weather for any length of time. • Carry an organizer in your vehicle with these essentials: De-icing fluid, quart of oil, quart of transmission fluid, jug of 50/50 mix of antifreeze, bottle of brake fluid, emergency flares, paper towels, portable air pump, windshield scraper, booster cables and a distress flag. Also carry snow chains or cables, portable shovel and tow chain or rope if traveling in cold conditions or over passes. If you ever need help, you’ll have the supplies on hand to quickly get your
vehicle back on the road. Each person in your vehicle should bring extra warm clothing, medication for 1–2 days, extra water and nourishing snacks. Also carry a first-aid kit, pocket knife, duct tape, flashlight and emergency blankets.
Need somewhere warm and dry to winterize your car? Rent a stall at one of your Auto Centers! For a small fee, you can rent bays and lifts that vary according to function at each location. For instance, you can use a drive-on lift for changing oil easily, arm lifts for changing and rotating tires and rotary lifts for better access. Most stalls are equipped with their own tool box.
Learn how to perform car care Changing your own oil and fluids and lubing your vehicle saves you a lot of money — learn how at your Auto Centers. The McChord Auto Center even has a Lube and Oil Change class and a Car Check-Up class; just call to make an appointment! Call the Lewis Main Auto Center at 253-967-3728 or the McChord Auto Center at 253-982-7226 for more information.

Playing in a winter wonderland Know Before you go!
By Robert Wade Conrad
T
he mountains are calling and you want to go. The opportunity to be in the winter wonderland that is the Pacific Northwest is at your fingertips! All you have to do is bring out your smartphone or log onto your computer and you have all the information you need to go safely into the winter wilderness. Before you go, check the websites listed at the end of the article and download the apps to make sure you know when, where and how to have some fun in the snow. My favorite place to check before I head outside is Washington Trails Association. This organization boasts the largest volunteer trail maintenance program and one of the most compre-
14
Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus December 2017
hensive websites and apps to get up-todate information about where you want to go. You can search snowshoeing and it will list the best places for snowshoeing. If you want to take your dog, it’s easy to filter those hikes, as well. The best thing are the trip reports. Userupdated reports describe trail conditions, how long it took to complete the hike, what they saw and even pictures of what you’ll see when you go. This is a must before every outdoor trip. This app
has saved me from many disappointing days outside. Also, this is an amazing way to connect with a community of outdoor enthusiasts. If you need more specific information on where to ski and snowboard, web cams with snow reports are available for you to look at before you decide where to go. For instance, onthesnow.com has them all in one location. Each ski resort has its own page and app. If you’re going to buy a season pass or your loyalties are with
the other companies that run tours. Just make sure you’re trained or you’re with someone who has avalanche safety training. Regardless of what you want to do in the snow, it’s best to know what you are getting into before you go on your adventure. Getting to your winter recreation spot can be difficult. Washington State Department of Transportation has live information with weather reports and webcams so you can prepare for whatever winter wants to throw at you.
Check before you go to pick the best route. Snow might be hitting Stevens Pass, but Snoqualmie is clear. When it’s time to drive home, that weather system might have pushed down to Snoqualmie, so going back over Stevens Pass is the best option. That’s why it’s a good idea to download the onthesnow.com app and check before you head out into the wilderness. For more information on how to prepare your vehicle for winter driving, turn to page 10.
Check out these websites and download the apps to your favorites: • Washington Trails Association: wta.org/go-outside/hikes • WTA app: wta.org/our-work/about/trailblazer-mobile-app • Washington State Department of Transportation mountain pass info: wsdot.com/traffic/passes • WSDOT app: wsdot.wa.gov/Inform/mobile.htm • Washington State Parks Sno-Parks: parks.state.wa.us/130/Winter-recreation • Sno-Parks app: parks.wa.gov/apps • Ski resort webcams and snow reports: onthesnow.com/washington/webcams.html • Ski reports app: onthesnow.com/mobile • Mount Rainier National Park: nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/winter.htm • Mount Rainier webcams: nps.gov/mora/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm • Mount Rainier maps: nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/maps.htm

one resort, those are easy to find. If you want to go sledding or snow tubing, there are options in the national parks or Washington State Sno-Parks. These locations are open when the weather permits, so it’s best to check the website or call the hotline to find out the current information. Snow parks are also the gateway to the most amazing snowmobile trails. If you don’t have your own snowmobile, you can go on a trip with us or one of
Some people don’t want to put on chains or purchase the snow equipment needed to safely go outside. If that someone is you, we have you covered! From snowshoeing to backcountry skiing, snow tubing to snowmobiling, we have a variety of adventures that can get you outside and teach you how to make the most of this winter wonderland.
Just email jblmadventuretrips@gmail.com or check out our trip offerings on RecTrac or at fb.com/SeeYouOutsideJBLM to find out what we have to offer. If what you want to do is not listed in our regular trips and adventures, email us and we can put something together for you. Our goal is for you to be safe and have a wonderful winter in Washington!

SKIESUnlimited welcomes you to the full production of “The Nutcracker” ballet in its second year at JBLM’s Evergreen Theater Friday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. With a cast of more than 60 children and adults, the SKIES dance, art, theater and gymnastics departments will ring in the holiday season in theatrical fashion. Tickets are $5 per person and are available now at Leisure Travel Services, located at 2272 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main (inside Bowl Arena Lanes). Set to the timeless score of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, this holiday favorite tells the story of a young girl and the magic of Christmas Eve. The main part of Clara (played by Dacy Emmons, age 8) is joined by her friends and their Families
for a Christmas party full of dancing, gifts and magic. The adult cast dances and acts alongside their children during the party scene before the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer (played by active duty Soldier, Bob Nadeau) makes an appearance that thrills the children with life-size mechanical dolls and extravagant gifts. But the most special gift is reserved for his goddaughter, Clara — a gorgeous nutcracker-Soldier doll. As the party ends, Uncle Drosselmeyer casts the best spell of all and brings Clara’s beloved nutcracker to life. The Nutcracker (played by Johnathan Keyes, age 10) saves Clara with his battalion of toy soldiers from some very naughty mice and the mischievous Mouse King (Played by Ms. Mel, dance
instructor at SKIES). He then takes her on an adventure into the Pine Forest where they dance with the Snow Queen (played by Sarah Moore age, age 14) and the snowflakes. These dancing snowflakes sparkle and shine on stage all in white as they frolic about the forest. Afterward, they travel to the Land of Sweets ruled over by the Sugar Plum Fairy (played by Abbey Moorehead, dance instructor at SKIES). There, Clara and the Nutcracker are treated to a variety of dances, from Waltzing Flowers in shimmering green-and-pink tutus to the audience-favorite Russian Dancer (played by Liberty Moore). A special treat is Mother Ginger (played by Ms. Denise, SKIES gymnastics coach) as her clowns parade about the stage and dazzle audiences with their gymnastics tricks.
Tickets are $5 per person and are available now at Leisure Travel Services, 2272 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main (inside Bowl Arena Lanes). 23

EAP Tip of the Month Managing holiday stress in the workplace The holidays can be a time for fun, togetherness, appreciation — and sometimes, stress. We all have different ways we celebrate; however, we also experience stressors that can be projected to love ones, co-workers and even the barista at our favorite coffee shop. The office environment is not immune to holiday stressors, so here are few quick and simple tips to manage the seasonal/holiday stressors in the workplace and beyond. • Plan: Create both a personal and work calendar for the holiday period that accounts for time off, office celebrations and reduction in staff. This can help with the management of daily taskers, customer service and possible unexpected situations that may present during this time. Planning provides the framework to manage potential stressful situations. • Keep it simple: By simplifying our lives, we can be more realistic about commitment challenges during this time of year. Expectations during the holiday seasons can be stressful. Setting realistic and manageable goals can not only reduce stress but allow for a more enjoyable and meaningful time. • Take care: Stress has physical and mental symptoms that can affect our personal and work life. We can do a few things to manage stress by adapting simple habits, such as deep breathing, short meditation and brisk walks to relieve stress immediately. The National Center for Telehealth & Technology created a mobile application that allows users to monitor and track emotional health. To download the free portable T2 Mood Tracker, visit t2health.dcoe.mil/apps/t2-mood-tracker or download directly from itunes.apple.com/us/app/t2-mood-tracker/id428373825?mt=8. The EAP team wishes you and your Families a healthy and balanced holiday season. We invite you to stop by to see us at 2008B N. 3rd & Pendleton, Room 114 at Lewis Main or call 253-732-2214 if you would like assistance with any adult living situation that may be impacting your personal or work life.

FOCUS tip of the month Building new traditions, remembering the old The holidays are often a busy, cheerful time spent with friends and Family. It’s a time to reminisce about the Family traditions we grew up with. Family traditions or rituals are important in building a sense of Family closeness and cohesion. Traditions can be big or small, such as taking a special trip, always watching a particular movie, baking cookies together and sending holiday cards. Whatever it is, make sure the entire Family is included and build special memories for years to come. At FOCUS, we help Families and couples identify other ways they can build closeness and cohesion. Don’t just get by, get stronger! The FOCUS program works with Families just like yours to teach skills that help you be more successful and make the most of seasonal changes. FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusProject.org. show you a variety of ways to make small changes that will equal huge results in your finances and your journey of becoming financially fit! You work hard for your money and shouldn’t have to sacrifice all the small luxuries in life. The trick is just figuring out a way to get results and meet your budget. For example, if you drink two lattes a day at $5 each, that adds up to $300 a month! A simple solution would be to locate the type of coffee that you like to drink at your local grocery store and make the small effort to brew that delicious cup of coffee at home. If you drink more than one cup in the morning, purchase a washable container and bring a coffee maker to work. You
may also choose to brew and contribute to the community coffee pot in your work area. Either of these small steps can save you approximately $280 a month and allow you to drink enjoyable coffee! Now that this one behavior change is saving you $280 a month, you have some choices to make. Do you spend it on those new shoes that you have been eyeing online? Well, you could do that. Or you could take that $280 and place it as an extra payment on a credit card that you’ve been avoiding paying off. This will likely save you hundreds or even thousands in interest! If you have no credit card debt, you could deposit it into your emergency savings account to get to that $5,000 goal. Maybe you’ve
been diligent and already have an emergency and reserve savings set up, but one of your goals is to travel to Hawaii. Place those savings in your goal account and you’re one step closer to saying “aloha”! Making small changes will have huge financial rewards. Will it be painful to do? Maybe, but I promise you — being financially fit feels fantastic! It makes you confident in your finances, provides the means for you to achieve your goals and dreams and takes an amazing amount of stress off your shoulders. So, what are you waiting for? Book your appointment today at AFCS! To book an appointment with an AFCS financial counselor, visit JBLMfrp.checkappointments.com or call 253-967-1453.
