What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

JESSICA MUSCHEK has worked as a Library Technician at McChord Library for 3½ years and has been at JBLM since February 2015.

2

Had you asked me 10 years ago, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” I would have in no way imagined myself working for a library, much less in Washington, and even less on a military base. Ten years ago, I was a 23-year-old beginning my master’s in Italian Renaissance Art History at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge after having graduated with a bachelor’s in Mass Communications in Public Relations from LSU in Shreveport. I had big plans in 2008. Soon after graduation, life happened, as it has a tendency to do. I fell in love and married a Soldier in May 2013, which immediately took me from the heat of Louisiana to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. I knew absolutely nothing about the military and honestly, it all made me nervous! I struggled to find my place in my new military-centered life. When we arrived at JBLM toward the end of 2014, I discovered that there were so many fun and awesome things to do on base! I was hired at McChord Library in February 2015, and since then feel like I've discovered a new world of amazing opportunity within MWR. For the first time since becoming a military spouse, I felt grounded. These are my people! There are people who are here to help, involve and welcome you! MWR means everything to me. It’s all the fun stuff you can do on base and it’s easily the greatest thing I’ve discovered about military life. Here I’ve found a home, a career and a life that allows me to flourish. Within MWR, I can learn new skills and broaden my horizons even further. Working at McChord Library has allowed me a creative outlet where I can create amazing programming for military Families and cultivate an atmosphere of fun and excitement. MWR offers more than I could have ever dreamed, and I am forever grateful for its existence.

By Kaweka Stoney f you’ve asked yourself “What pass do I need?” or “Do I have the right equipment?” or the many other questions you might have had before going on a trip outdoors, the Outdoor Recreation program staff can take the guesswork out. All you have to do is just show up when you sign up for a variety of snow trips with us! For instance, snowshoeing gets you out into the wide open on the fresh snow that’s been falling for a little exercise and a lot of fun. It’s a great way to introduce young ones to snow sports and an activity that people of all ages and experience levels can enjoy. One of the best ways to enjoy the Washington winter wonderland is by partaking in snowmobiling. You’ll have the chance to see magnificent views, enjoy fresh powder, and explore a lot of nature in a short amount of time. Fly down the hill on an inflatable tube and go back to the top to start the fun all over. Whether you’re looking for a practice hill for your kids, a terrain park to show off your backside 720 or untouched backcountry, there are plenty of places for you to get out and experience the best skiing.

How to prepare for a winter excursion with us Unless otherwise specified, all equipment is provided for each of our trips. All you need is to bring some food, water and the right clothes. The secret to an enjoyable experience outdoors is to dress properly for the conditions. Layering your clothes is a tried and true way to maximize your comfort in the outdoors. By dressing in layers, you can make quick adjustments based on your activity level and changes in the weather. The base layer (against your skin) manages moisture; the insulating layer protects from the cold; the shell (outer layer) shields you from wind, rain and snow. You simply add or subtract layers as needed. The best materials for your base layer are made of merino wool, synthetic fabrics or silk. For the middle layer, natural fibers, such as wool and goose down are excellent insulators. Classic fleece, such as Polartec or Thermal Pro polyester, and other synthetics, such as Thinsulate, provide warmth for a variety of conditions. The outer layer protects you from the elements and can be waterproof shells, water-resistant shells, soft shells or insulated shells. If you have any questions, send us an email at JBLMAdventureTrips@gmail.com.

FOCUS tip of the month Make the most of seasonal changes December is the last month of the year and often the busiest! Families and couples are preparing for holidays, vacation, travel and New Year’s celebrations. Sometimes Family members are apart from each other, while others are making plans to be together. December can be a wonderful month to celebrate; however, it also can be a lot to manage, and can be overwhelming or emotional if we don’t have the tools and skills to remain strong. Sometimes just closing your eyes for 30 seconds and taking some deep breaths can be a good way to let go of the stress and feel the joy. The FOCUS program works with Families just like yours to teach skills that help you be more successful and make the most of seasonal changes. Visit us with your Family or as a couple to strengthen ways of taking those deep breaths and remaining strong throughout the last part of the year. Don’t just get by, get stronger! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org. Get the most from retirement system I’ve opted in to the Blended Retirement System — now what? As the window to opt in to the Blended Retirement System comes to a close at the end of December, many Service members who opted in are trying to figure out what to do next in order to maximize their BRS election. Making a monthly contribution to your Thrift Savings Plan account is the best way to take full advantage of the BRS. The TSP is a retirement savings and investment plan designed to give Service members some of the same retirement-savings benefits that many private corporations offer their employees under 401(k) plans. If you opted in to the BRS and didn’t have an existing TSP account, you’ll need to establish one through myPay on the DFAS website under the heading “Traditional TSP and Roth TSP.” Opting in the BRS allows you to immediately receive a 1 percent automatic contribution by the government into your TSP account every month, regardless if you are contributing from your own pay. Once you begin making monthly contributions to your TSP account from your base pay, you’ll start receiving matching contributions. Matching contributions are made dollar-fordollar on the first 3 percent of base pay you contribute per month, and 50 cents on the dollar on the next 2 percent, for a maximum of 4 percent. For example, if you contribute 5 percent of your base pay each month into your TSP account, the government also contributes 5 percent (1 percent automatic contribution and 4 percent matching contribution) for a total of 10 percent into your account each month. To schedule an appointment with a financial counselor to learn more about the BRS and the TSP, call 253-967-1453 or visit JBLMdpfr.timetap.com.

EAP tip of the month Ward off stress by staying on budget As everyone prepares to celebrate the season, it’s easy to get pulled into the expense of decorating, entertaining and giftgiving. Moved by nostalgia of past celebrations, by goodwill for all or by big-ticket discounted items, overspending can become a reality. To avoid excessive debt, budgeting and conserving your money is key to fiscal responsibility. Here are some helpful tips on how to stay on track: • Create a list of expenses. Before actually spending money, itemize a complete list of people who will get cards and gifts, in addition to the cost of shopping for holiday groceries and entertainment incidentals. • Trim your list. Cutting back on your gift-giving list this year can help ward off overspending. As an option, suggest giving a group gift to Family members rather than individual gifts. You may find that other members of your Family may love the idea. • Decorate on a dime. When decorating, avoid overspending by making homemade decorations or opting for a natural holiday theme by using pine needles, branches and pine cones rather than store-bought decorations. • Search for coupon codes. Take the opportunity to look for online promotional coupons from favorite stores; using these codes during the holiday season can mean up to 50 percent in savings. • Take on a seasonal second job. If extra money is needed during the holidays, consider a seasonal job. Many stores need help throughout the holidays. Additionally, some of those retail positions also may provide further employeesaving discounts. Holidays can be stressful enough with demands from Family and friends, in addition to work or community group commitments. Therefore, planning ahead and avoiding last-minute purchases will help keep your budget on track. In the end, the holidays are about enjoying family, Friends and traditions — remaining focused on what’s important can help keep stress in perspective. To learn more about this topic, stop by to see the Employee Assistance Program team at 2008B N. 3rd (at Pendleton Avenue), Room B114 at Lewis Main or call 253-732-2214.
