What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

GLORIA TOMCZEWSKI is MWR’s Special Events manager. She has worked as part of MWR for 20 years.

2

I grew up as an Army kid and married an Army Service member. As a military Family, my kids have been active in youth sports through Child & Youth Services and took swimming lessons through the Sports, Fitness & Aquatics program. We’ve always gone to the big events, such as Fourth of July festivals. I didn’t realize until much later that MWR organizes these and so much more for the installation. Now that I’ve been working for MWR for 20 years, I understand how much research, behind-the-scenes organization, effort and long hours go into every MWR event. My first event was assisting with a play called “A Christmas Carol” as a stage manager. I loved being part of that event, and I realized that working with MWR Special Events was going to be an exciting and fulfilling career choice. My favorite event is Kids’ Fest in recognition of April’s Month of the Military Child. Because the theme changes every year, it gives us a chance to explore new ideas and be creative. Every big event directly supports our military Families in their current needs. As an example, when so many Service members were deployed years ago, we created new events that helped spouses unwind and lower their stress levels. You may see events come and go, but most have benefited and are benefiting our community when they’re most needed. Each event we undertake seems like a tornado behind the scenes, but in the end, what we present brings smiles to community members’ faces and creates new memories being made and cherished. And that’s very cool — it’s what’s so rewarding about my job. I love working with military Families!

Winter snow sports fans are smart to get avalanche-saavy By Patti Jeffrey inter snow is invitingly magical, entertaining and beautiful for those who want to cross-country ski, snowboard and snowshoe. It’s also devastatingly deadly. Our mountains are within easy driving distance and are inviting for winter sports enthusiasts, but going out without knowledge of avalanche dangers is like walking down a rural roadway without looking for the occasional, fast-moving traffic. Winter snowpacks in the mountains are, to say the least, complicated. Gentle snowfalls that began in early October this year have already frozen, unfrozen and refrozen, and each layer of snow has a different recipe — some snow is grainy, some fluffy, some sleet-like. The way snowpacks grow is much like the way you stack and take out Jenga blocks. There’s a tipping point at which any snowpack above you may suddenly fail due to what’s going on in its many layers, and you don’t want to be in the way of its mighty power! That’s why the Outdoor Recreation Program, in partnership with the Northwest Avalanche Center, invites you to learn about avalanche country at free clinics Monday, Dec. 9 and Tuesday, Jan. 21, 6–8:30 p.m. at Adventures Unlimited. “Since the majority of fatal avalanche incidents involves one person in a party of adventurers, it’s important that all members in a group recreating during the winter are able to recog-

nize avalanche terrain and know the snow forecast,” says Berndt Bittlingmaier, ODR programmer and Northwest Avalanche Center instructor. “The clinic gives you tools to manage avalanche hazards and uncovers human decision-making pitfalls in backcountry travel.” Topics include avalanche terrain recognition, awareness of how weather affects avalanche hazards and snowpack instability and more.

buried obstacles that can catch your skis or snowboard and make you tumble — a new layer of fluffy snow may look fine, but can hide debris just underneath the layer. You’ll need to learn how to make your way carefully around these obstacles. As cities in the Pacific Northwest continue to expand in population, it’s a given that you’ll see more people venture into snow country for outdoor winter recreation, using many of the same trails that have been popular during warmer seasons. If you’re one of those people, you’ll need to be well-equipped with knowledge along with your gear. “Come learn about avalanche safety gear, and check out the new rock climbing wall at Adventures Unlimited while you’re here,” Berndt advises. “We’ll also provide information on more training opportunities. Get the info, get the training and go have fun in the winter!”

If you’re new to our region, knowing how to recognize and navigate around hazardous snowpacks involves keeping up to date on what’s currently happening to the snowpacks in the area you’re planning to venture. The Northwest Avalanche Center recommends using maps, guidebooks and photos to gather information about your destination (in particular, the leeward side of high ridges that are most likely to have higher snow Berndt Bittlingmaier, ODR drifts). Transition tips for departing or arriving students By Norma Martinez-Melo, JBLM School Liaison Officer oving in the middle of the year can be difficult if you’re a student in the middle of a semester and haven’t completed the requirements for your course work. This is what we hear often from military Families when they arrive during the winter break or spring break. Here are some practical preparation tips that can be completed prior to you withdrawing from your school.

M

Leaving the area If you’re leaving JBLM, let us help you with your school-age children’s transition. Contact the JBLM School Liaison Office by phone or email, or drop by our office at Parent Central Services to get your questions answered. • Get information about the new installation and the schools near that installation, along with a checklist of things you should take with you. • Receive information on connecting with a youth sponsor at the new installation before you get there. They can answer questions you may have about schools and the base. The key is to give your school teachers and counselors time to help prepare you for the move. You can prepare some things ahead of time: • Make an appointment to see your counselor to review your records — it’s better to be prepared and know what you have to do than to arrive at the new school and not be prepared. • Ask about finishing the coursework ahead of your departure — this can work if you have less than a month from the end of the semester to the day you leave. This may require some Continued on page 35.

online learning or additional coursework to be able to test out prior to leaving. Note that many schools may have problems with this if there are more than four weeks left in the semester. • If you’re taking AP classes, see about being able to finish the course online or check with the receiving state about whether or not this is available for incoming transfers. It’s difficult to say goodbye to what is familiar and what you know, but it can be exciting to be able to start again at a new place and discover what’s available and to make the most of that. These types of skills provide you an opportunity to practice resiliency, enabling you to be better and stronger with change. If you look at it closely, this transition is preparing you to become an adult, adaptable and flexible enough to make the best of any situation.

If you’re just arriving Let the School Liaison Officer know you are here — we can help you get into a district school. Get a youth sponsor who can help you maneuver all the things you want to know about JBLM and schools locally. You can email us to get started. Regardless of whether you’re leaving or arriving at JBLM, remember to bring the school name, address and telephone number of the school you just left.

Our contact information Contact the JBLM School Liaison Office at 253-967-7195 or email us at usarmy.jblm. imcom-fmwrc.mbx.slo@mail.mil. You also can come by our office at Parent Central Services, 2295 12th St. (at Bitar Street), Lewis Main.

Connect with Youth Sponsorship Program Getting ready to PCS? You can get to know your new installation before you move! New here and wondering what there is to do? Get connected with Youth Sponsorship! The CYS Youth Sponsorship Program is peer outreach designed to help incoming youth make a smooth transition from their previous installation to the new installation and community. A sponsor is an experienced, energetic youth who provides regular outreach with new students through welcome packets, face-to-face communication and email. Peer sponsors communicate information about school resources, provide encouragement and support, develop trust, provide appropriate referrals and are a point of contact within the Youth Sponsorship Program, including Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone, community activities and events and so much more! Are you a youth who excels at creativity, problem-solving and patience with a desire to help and serve others? Join our team and become a sponsor and a leader in your community! To request a youth sponsor or apply to become a sponsor, contact School Support Services at 2295 S. 12th St., Lewis Main, or call 253-967-7195. ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAYS WITH DPFR RESOURCES Managing holiday stress

T

he holidays can be a time for fun, togetherness, appreciation and sometimes, stress. We all have different ways we celebrate; however, we also experience stressors that can be projected onto love ones, co-workers and people we encounter daily. The office environment is not immune to holiday stressors, so here are few quick and simple tips to manage the seasonal holiday stressors in the workplace and beyond. Plan — Create both a personal and work calendar for the holiday period that accounts for time off, office celebrations and reduction in staff. This can help with the management of daily taskers, customer service and possible unexpected situations that may present during this time. Planning provides the framework to manage potential stressful situations. Keep it simple — By simplifying our lives, we can be more realistic about commitment challenges during this time of year. Expectations during the holiday seasons can be stressful. Setting realistic and manageable goals can not only reduce stress but allow for a more enjoyable and meaningful time. Take care — Stress has physical and mental symptoms that can affect our personal and work life. We can do a few things to manage stress by adapting simple habits, such as deep breathing, short meditation and brisk

walks that can relieve stress immediately. The Employee Assistance Program team wishes you and your Family a healthy and balanced holiday season. We invite you to stop by to see us at 2008B N. 3rd (at Pendleton Avenue), Room 114 at Lewis Main or call us at 253-732-2214 if you would like assistance with any adult living situation that may be impacting your personal or work life.

Getting conversations started

D

ecember is here and the holidays are fast approaching! It can be easy to get caught up in the shopping rush, so remember to take notice of those around you and your loved ones. Family traditions and rituals can be a great way to share memories, love and laughter with one another, making the holidays especially meaningful. Finding it difficult to strike up a conversation with all the holiday stress? Visit the Families OverComing Under Stress program to learn how you can use conversation cards to get the ball rolling! Don’t just get by, get stronger! The FOCUS program works with Families just like yours to teach skills that help you be more successful and make the most of seasonal changes. FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at

Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. Call 253-966-6390 for more information, or email JBLM@focusproject.org. You may also visit online at FocusProject.org or fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining.

Renewing your CAC or ID card

I

f you need to renew your CAC or ID card, here are a few steps to make it easier: When you arrive at the CAC/ID Card Section in Room 101 at Waller Hall, you must present two forms of valid ID by both the sponsor and the Family member (if over age 18). One must be a picture ID, the other can be a Social Security card, birth certificate, passport, driver’s license or state ID card.

If you’re enrolling a child for the first time, a birth certificate and original Social Security card are required. As a reminder, a driver’s license is only valid as a source of personal identity as long as the driver’s license hasn’t expired. Some states allow the driver’s license to be valid after expiration if they are part of the military, but at that point, that’s all it is — a driver’s license, no longer a valid source of personal identification for ID or CAC card purposes. For a list of acceptable ID, visit https://www. cac.mil/Portals/53/Documents/List_of_ Acceptable_Documents.pdf. Questions? Call the ID Cards/DEERS Chief at 253-967-7888.
