New Year’s resolutions and how to accomplish them By Lizzie Hoscheit

A

s the sun sets on 2020, it’s time to set some New Year’s resolutions. The problem with resolutions is that the majority of them go unkept. However, MWR is here to help you keep and accomplish your resolutions! I have compiled a list of common resolutions and have found resources here at JBLM that can support you in attaining your goals for 2021.

Read more books If your goal is to start reading more or to tackle that “to be read” pile, JBLM libraries can help. The libraries have access to over 50,000 books and audiobooks, giving you plenty of options from which to choose. Our libraries also have other resources that may help you accomplish other resolutions, such as foreign language material and 8

test study guides. You have access to all of this at Grandstaff Library at Lewis Main and McChord Library at McChord Field. Visit new places Here at JBLM we have an excellent Leisure Travel Services program. Whether you’re planning something as extravagant as a cruise or a day trip to Seattle, LTS has you covered. One example is the Seattle City Pass, which gets you into seven different attractions, including the Space Needle and Aquarium. When you go through LTS to purchase the Seattle City Pass, you save big on tickets. Try something new Lucky for you, there’s always

something new to try here at JBLM. Earn your open-water diver certification through Outdoor Recreation. If you’d like to stay above water, try rock climbing at our indoor rock wall at Adventures Unlimited. The rock-climbing wall is FREE for active duty and their families. Gear is available for rent on site. (JBLModr.com) Set up a new budget The start of a new year is a great time to create a new budget, but it can be a stressful task. DPFR has a Financial Readiness Program that offers free financial counseling. Specialties include budgeting, debt management, goal setting and student load debt. (JBLMdpfr.com)

Work out more JBLM fitness centers offer a wide variety of equipment for your fitness needs. If solo workouts aren’t your thing, fitness classes are also being offered at select locations. Some locations also feature tennis, basketball and racquetball courts. (JBLMsfa.com) Learn a new recipe If you’re looking to get creative in the kitchen and need some new recipes, take a look at our cooking show, Chow!, featuring Kelley from McChord Club. It’s a great way to learn a new recipe with step-by-step instructions. Tune in on our Facebook and YouTube pages (search for JBLMmwr). Continued on next page. 9

Spend more time outside There are so many options with MWR to accomplish this resolution, as we have an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. Northwest Adventure Center (located on Lewis North) and Adventures Unlimited (at McChord Field) offer equipment rentals of anything you would need to go on an outdoor adventure. Winter rentals include ski and snowboard equipment, and you will also find camping rentals, trailers, yard games and so much more! (JBLModr.com) Frame those family photos It’s easy to go to the nearest store and find a frame for your photos, however, will the frame match how

special the photo is? Probably not. That’s where the Arts & Crafts Center comes in. Work with the frame shop experts to create a custom frame for your photos. These frames can vary in color, material and design leaving plenty of room for creativity and customization. Volunteer Volunteering allows you to explore new career fields, update your existing skills, accumulate work experience and is a wonderful opportunity to meet others in the community. Volunteers contribute a broad range of services that enhance and expand the capabilities of military programs and services, and you can get started

10 Joint Base Lewis-McChord FOCUS December 2020

with the Installation Volunteer Corps. This program unites all volunteers who support the military’s commitment to volunteerism and serves as a liaison and resource for installation and private volunteer organizations. To get started, call 253-967-2324. If you want to volunteer at an MWR event, email specialevents@ JBLMmwr.com to be provided with information about upcoming opportunities. Another way to volunteer on base is with Child & Youth Services as a youth sports coach. Call the Youth Sports Office at 253-967-2405 to get started. Stop procrastinating We all want to procrastinate less,

but there’s so many other things to do. Maybe we can focus on this tomorrow. Sticking to New Year’s resolutions can be hard, but hopefully with all of the resources readily available for you, accomplishing some of your goals can be made a little easier. Also, remember to reward yourself along the way. Even small accomplishments are still accomplishments, and recognizing that is one of the first steps to success. Most of these resolutions involve change, which can be hard but nowhere does it say it needs to happen fast. You’ve got 365 days to accomplish these goals. Take it one step at a time, and we will be here for you to lean on when you need it!

How to prepare for the Winter snow sports season in the pacific northwest By Patti Jeffrey & Tiana Crispino

W

inter snow is invitingly magical, entertaining and beautiful for those who want to cross-country ski, snowboard and snowshoe. It can also be dangerous and in some cases deadly. Our mountains are within easy driving distance and are inviting for winter sports enthusiasts, but going out without knowledge of avalanche dangers is like walking down a rural roadway without looking for the occasional, fast-moving traffic. Winter snowpacks in the mountains are, to say the least, complicated. Gentle snowfalls that began in early October this year have already frozen, unfrozen and refrozen, and each layer of snow has a different recipe – some snow is grainy, some fluffy, some sleet-like. The way snow packs grow is much like the way you stack and take out Jenga blocks. There’s a tipping point at which any snowpack above you may suddenly fail due to what’s going on in its many layers, and you don’t want to be in the way of its mighty power. “Since the majority of fatal avalanche incidents involves one person in a party of adventurers, it’s important that all members in a group recreating during the winter are able to recognize avalanche terrain and know the snow forecast,” says Berndt Bittlingmaier, ODR programmer and NAC instructor.

30 Joint Base Lewis-McChord FOCUS December 2020

So how can you prepare for the winter snow sports season? For starters, there are many topics to understand including avalanche terrain recognition, awareness of how weather affects avalanche hazards and snowpack instability and more. You can equip yourself with this knowledge by using our on-base resources. For instance, the Northwest Adventure Center recommends using maps, guidebooks and photos to gather information about your destination (in particular, the leeward side of high ridges that are most likely to have higher snow drifts). However, it’s also important

to make sure you’re in shape for these intensive winter sports. In order to be fully prepared for the uncertainties that winter snow sports may bring given the terrain, it’s important to stay in shape so you can be best prepared. Another on-base resource is JBLM Sports, Fitness & Aquatics. With seven facilities across JBLM, there is plenty of opportunity, even in a pandemic to ensure you are able to stay fit and ready for the winter sports season. A few examples of exercises and stretches that the SFA team recommends using to help get ready for ski/snowboard season

include foam-rolling, one-leg balances, jump-steps, lunges and squats. These specific exercises are recommended as they help best prep the specific muscles that are used most during skiing and snowboarding. If you’re new to our region, knowing how to recognize and navigate around hazardous snowpacks, as well as preparing your body for the specific movements of winter sports, is vital. Not only will this ease some nerves about heading to the PNW mountains for the first time, but being prepared and knowledgeable ahead of time will only make the season all the more fun.

Are you a military spouse looking for employment? Do you hope to give back to your local military community while working from home? Family Child Care has an opportunity for you.

T

he Family Child Care program is a part of the Child & Youth Services childcare system available at JBLM, as well as Army installations around the world. FCC provides quality home-based care for children 4 weeks to 12 years old and is offered in on-base housing. Many families prefer FCC homes because of the smaller setting. FCC also offers a 15% cost savings compared to CYS child development centers and school-age centers. FCC providers are vetted and only the bestqualified candidates are recommended for certification. Providers, their spouse and anyone living in the quarters 12 years and older must complete background checks. Regular home inspections are also part of certification. They also receive paid ongoing training for professional development. Army policy requires that anyone providing care on a regular basis for more than 10 hours per week must be certified through Child & Youth Services as a FCC provider. For more information on how to register your children in FCC, visit militarychildcare.com. For more information on how to become an FCC provider, call 253-967-3039.

Tabatha D. Bentley DFMWR Administrative Support Assistant “My family chose FCC because we liked the idea of a smaller setting and the amount of one-on-one time our child would receive with her provider. During the pandemic, we have had peace of mind knowing that she is limited to exposure in such a small setting. Our FCC provider has taken great care of our daughter and taught her so much during her time there. Our experience with FCC has been wonderful.

Each month, hear what different JBLM Service members, family members, civilians and others like to do in their spare time.

PFC Ashley Jose Last meal you had: Popeye’s two piece with fries and orange Fanta.

Last time you tried something new: I tried a new restaurant last month for my mother’s birthday.

Last good advice you received: My drill sergeant told me to embrace the suck when we were rucking in the rain. It stuck with me because sometimes all you can do is embrace the suck and push through.

Last time you laughed: Yesterday on FaceTime with my kids, I told them we would get candy for breakfast and they scolded me because candy isn’t good for you.

Last adventure you went on: I went to California to fight fires with my Company in September. Courtesy photo
